Unforced Errors in Oscar-Nominated King Richard
Here is another repressing of a review I wrote last year the Oscar wining drama King Richard. Note that I called it for Will Smith's win.
This review was originally published in the Southern Review of Books on February 22nd, 2022. As early as 2001, with Michael Mann’s Ali, Will Smith has been after the prestige of a Best Leading Actor Oscar. Debatably a sixth of his career has been an attempt to secure that goal, from his two collaborations with Gabriele Muccino, The Pursuit of Happiness (2006) and Seven Pounds (2008), to…

The Charleston Church Shooting: Dylann Roof

*NOTE! This is a repost! And it will look familiar CAUSE IVE POSTED IT ON ANOTHER ACCOUNT!! Is it the best? No.*
—
Early life/ Prior convictions
Dylann was born April 3rd 1994 to mother Amelia and father Franklin with 2 sisters Amber and Morgan. During early childhood his parents would divorce and his father would later remarry. His stepmother accused his father of abuse. He would beg his step mother to let him live with her but she wasn’t able to. Dylann would be described to have obsessive compulsive tendencies with germs. In middle school he would stop caring about school and started smoking weed and drinking vodka. In nine years he would have attended seven schools. In 2010 he would drop out of Highschool and continue playing video games and smoking weed and drinking.

(The Roofs home)
In 2015 he was caught with an invalid prescription for suboxone at a mall to which he was banned from for a year. Later that year he was caught loitering in the mall to which they searched his car finding a forearm grip for a AR-15 semiautomatic rifle and six unloaded magazines capable of holding 40 rounds each but was let off it was legal in the state. Roofs Suboxone charge was mishandled and a system error took it as a misdemeanour instead of a felony. Which would have possibly prohibited him from purchasing the firearm.
(The flag of Rhodesia)
Later Dylann would look into the Trayvon Martin case and from an unknown article concluded Zimmerman was in the right. He then fell down a rabbit hole of black on white crime and misinformation. He then found 4chan and would find even more misinformation and hard right ideologies Dylann states he hasn’t been the same since that day. Which leads to his manifesto titled ‘The last Rhodesian’ Rhodesia being the African state founded in 1965 ran by primary Europeans and a white supremacy ideology before being abolished in 1979. The term now sticks with white supremac!sts like Dylann had became, as he also used the flag on his jacket. In preparation before the attack he looked up black churches and found the Emanuel Methodist Episcopal Church and would scout the area and ask around about mass times.
The shooting

(The Emanuel Methodist Episcopal Church)
June 15th 2015 somewhere around 8:00pm Dylann entered the church, once he did he was greeted by Rev.Pinckney and given a bible to study with. Roof was sat next to Pinckney as the study continued. As the study closed and the ending pray started Roof stood up and pulled out his Glock 41 .45 calibre handgun and began shooting. Killing Pinckney first. Then 26 year old Tywanza Sanders stood up to plead with Dylann before he said ‘I have to do it. You rape our women and you’re taking over our country and you have to go’ he then shot and k!lled Sharonda Singleton, Dr. Daniel L. Simmons, Ethel Lee Lance, Cynthia Hurd, Myra Tompson and Tywanza Sanders. Dylann would reload 5 times that day. Polly Shepherd was spared when he asked her if he shot her yet to which she replied no he then told her ‘good cause we need someone to survive because I’m gonna shoot myself and you’ll be the only survivor. He then turned the gun on himself realizing he was out of ammo. He then left the church to the surprise there wasn’t anyone outside. The next day the police confirmed the gunman was 21 year old Dylann Roof with witnesses reporting they saw him drive towards Shelby, a town close to Charleston. At 10:44am Roof was arrested at a traffic stop in Shelby where it was then confirmed he worked alone.

(The victims)
The Trial
Five days after the shooting the grand jury announced that Roof was being indicted for 33 federal charges.
12 counts hate crime against black people
12 counts obstructing the exercise of religion
9 counts murder using a firearm.
On June 6th Roof reportedly did not want to be trialed by jury and instead let the judge decide if he was guilty and if the death penalty was reasonable. August 23rd Roofs lawyers called the motion of death penalty unconstitutional and asked to reject the motion. On September 1st an on camera hearing was held in case of outbursts. December 7th 2016 the trial started. During a survivor statement Roofs mom collapsed as she had a heart attack. After 3 days of the trial FBI played a video on which he admitted to laughing and drinking while describing to friends how he’d shoot the church. To which his friend didn’t report to police and said he was drunk and took his keys and Glock that was on him. After 2 hours the jury found him guilty on all 33 charges. Roof wanting to plead guilty but told not to by lawyers.

(Roof at his video hearing)
January 10th 2017 Roof was sentenced to the death penalty, death by lethal injection.

Release: May 14, 1982
Lyrics:
Ah, mm
Whoa, whoa, whoa
When your world is full of strange arrangements
And gravity won't pull you through
You know you're missing out on something
Well that something depends on you
All I'm saying
It takes a lot to love you
All I'm doing
You know it's true
All I mean now
There's one thing yes one thing
That turns this gray sky to blue
The look of love
(That's the look, that's the look)
The look of love
(That's the look, that's the look)
The look of love
When your girl has left you out on the pavement (goodbye)
Then your dreams fall apart at the seams
Your reason for living's, your reason for leaving
Don't ask me what it means
I don't know the answer to that question
(Where's the look)
If I knew I would tell you
What's the look
Look for your information
Yes there's one thing, the one thing
That still holds true
(What's that)
The look of love
(That's the look, that's the look)
The look of love
(That's the look, that's the look)
The look of love
The look of love
(That's the look, that's the look)
The look of love
(That's the look, that's the look)
The look of love
If you judge a book by the cover
Then you judge the look by the lover
I hope you'll soon recover
Me I go from one extreme to another
And all my friends just might ask me
They say, "Martin, maybe one day you'll find true love"
And I say, maybe there must be a solution to
The one thing, the one thing we can't find
Songwriter:
Sisters and brothers
(That's the look, that's the look)
Should help each other
(That's the look, that's the look)
Heavens above
(That's the look, that's the look)
Hip hip hooray aye
(That's the look, that's the look)
Yippie aiy yippee yaye
(That's the look, that's the look)
Be lucky in love
Look of love

So I was making a list of who I think should/ would be nominated for the Oscars this year and I put Martin Scorsese, Celine Song, Todd Haynes, Greta Gerwig and Justine Triet as my picks for best director. When my sister saw it she said that they are too many women on the list for it to be realistic. And then that made go down the rabbit hole of checking the list of Academy Awards for best directing because I was curious which year did the first female director win an Oscar.
Woah. 2009? 70 years after the first ceremony? Crazy. So then I decided to check how many women were even nominated.
Seven. Throughout 96 years of its existence the Academy nominated seven women for best directing:
- Lina Wertmüller for Seven Beauties in 1975
- Jane Campion for The Piano in 1993
- Sofia Coppola for Lost In Translation in 2003
- Kathryn Bigelow who won for The Hurt Locker in 2009
- Greta Gerwig for Lady Bird in 2017
- Emerald Fennel for Promising Young Woman in 2021
- Chloé Zhao who won for Nomadland, also in 2021.
Jane Campion was nominated again for The Power of the Dog in 2022 and won, making her the only double nominee in this group and the third woman to win best director.
I decided to check some other numbers from the list just to illustrate how ridiculous that number is.
Just in the first 10 ceremonies 7 Oscars went to guys named Frank (Frank Borzage, Frank Lloyd and Frank Capra). They were nominated 9 times in that period. Overall they got 12 nominations throughout the Academy's history. Guys named William got 18 Oscar nominations over the years (12 for Wyler alone).
Actually, let's stop there. Here are all the men who got nominated more or as many times as all the women:
- William Wyler (12)
- Martin Scorsese (9)
- Steven Spielberg (9)
- Billy Wilder (8).
And that's not to say that they didn't deserve these nominations of course. But when there are numerous individual men who got nominated more times than the entire other half of the population you can't really blame it on anything else than the Academy's biases and discrimination.
And that discrimination doesn't end with the Academy, of course. Celine Sciamma's phenomenal Portrait of a Lady on Fire, which ranked 30th on Sight and Sound's list of best movies of all time, didn't even get a chance to get nominated, because French Film Institute chose to campaign another adaptation of Les Miserables instead.
The discrimination doesn't end on gender. When it comes to people of color the Academy also isn't particularly generous. No black woman was ever nominated for best director. 6 black men were nominated:
- John Singleton for Boyz n the Hood in 1991
- Lee Daniels for Precious in 2009
- Steve McQueen for 12 Years a Slave in 2013
- Barry Jenkins for Moonlight in 2016
- Jordan Peele for Get Out in 2017
- Spike Lee for BlacKkKlansman in 2018
10 Asians/ Asian Americans were nominated 13 times over the years:
- Hiroshi Teshigahara for Woman in the Dunes in 1965
- Akira Kurosawa for Ran in 1985 (a total travesty that he never won in that category)
- Terrence Malick for The Thin Red Line in 1998 and The Tree Of Life in 2011
- M. Night Shyamalan for The Sixth Sense in 1999
- Ang Lee for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in 2000, Brokeback Mountain in 2005 and Life Of Pi in 2012 (he won for the latter two)
- Bong Joon-Ho for Parasite in 2019
- Lee Isaac Chung for Minari in 2020
- Chloé Zhao for Nomadland in 2020 (the only woman of color who won in the category)
- Ryusuke Hamaguchi for Drive My Car in 2021
- Daniel Kwan for Everything Everywhere All At Once in 2022.
5 Latin Americans were nominated 8 times. It got a bit murky here, since that's not really a racial category. I couldn't find a different list than that anywhere, so I had to play a little elimination game. I wouldn't count Guillermo del Toro. Héctor Babenco is apparently a son of Polish and Ukrainian Jews. And I'm pretty sure Fernando Meirelles wouldn't count either. So that leaves us with:
- Alejandro González Iñárritu for Babel in 2006, Birdman in 2014 and The Revenant in 2015
- maybe Alfonso Cuarón for Gravity in 2013 and Roma in 2018 - won both times (fun fact about Roma, the hype for it was so big in Poland that I always assumed it was a polish movie, until I actually watched it around 2021 when I got more into film). Though his case is where we can fully see how much of a social concept race is, since he simultaneously says that he grew up as a white man and his win for Roma was applauded as a diversity win in the Academy circles.
No Native American was ever nominated for Best Director.
I don't know what the point of this post is. I guess I knew that Oscars were a white sausage fest but I never checked the numbers to see just how much, and Best Director might just be the worst category in that regard.
So if you're placing bets on the Oscars, I guess it'll be safer to just pick 5 random white guys for best director, instead of going by the quality of the movies themselves.
I'd love to see Celine Song win for her beautiful debut, or Greta Gerwig for the biggest movie of 2023 and because she is one of my favorite directors ever, but that may be hard since we had a few years in a row where either women or people of color won in this category, so the old hacks responsible for the choices are probably dying to pick another white guy.

Entertainer and LuckySky Music recording artist Tori Martin’s newest single, “Abilene,” offers a throwback late ‘70s vibe with a mid-tempo groove that gives her voice ample room to shine. The track is available on all streaming platforms. “It’s a song that speaks to wind-blown heartache, wide open plains and the search for the road you need to move on,” Martin notes. “This type of song is my musical backbone,” says Tori of this heartbreak tale. “All the miles I’ve travelled to sing at honky tonks and opry houses have made this type of music my own. There will be more of this traditional sound on my upcoming album for sure.” In late December radio programmers requested the track ahead of its planned January 24 release, and “Abilene” has already jumped to #35 on the TRRR chart. KNES Radio’s Buzz Russell remarks, “I absolutely LOVE IT! She is just killing it on this song.” Rudy Fernandez of Abilene’s KMWZ Radio says, “I predict this will be #1 in no time.” “Abilene” follows Martin’s recent #1 TRRR, “Lost In The Country,” her first ever #1 record. Anywhere and nowhere special Is where you go when your heart can’t settle And God knows I don’t wanna leave But I can’t stay in Abilene, Oh no (DiLuigi/Martin/Manna/Warner) Recorded at Blackbird Studio in Nashville and produced by LuckySky Music’s Bill Warner, the track features prominent Music City A-list players Russ Pahl (steel guitar), Mike Brignardello (bass), Tim McDonald (piano), Bill Warner (nylon guitar), Jeff King and Rob McNelly (electric guitar), Pat McGrath (acoustic guitar), and Steve Brewster (drums). Matt Singleton and Kirsti Manna added the background vocals. For Warner, it is one of his favorite productions. He says, “Tori is an authentic country singer that transcends her years on this song. I love how she launches into the chorus along with the heart-tugging descending minor chords.” Martin recalls writing the song in 2022 with Bill DiLuigi, Kirsti Manna and Bill Warner. “I was on a radio tour, and we were all in the car heading to Abilene. I remember saying to them, ‘I can’t stay in Abilene because the wind makes me crazy,’ and from there the ideas started flowing.” Currently, Tori is busy writing songs and spending time in the studio with producer Warner. In February, she will film the companion music video for “Abilene” and attend CRS. For the latest news go to Tori’s official website, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X (Twitter) and YouTube.
