Friday night mood … I feel a song coming on…
NEMESIS by SHRIEKBACK
In a jungle of the senses
Tinkerbell and Jack the ripper
Love has no meaning, not where they come from
But we know pleasure is not that simple
Very little fruit is forbidden
Sometimes we wobble, sometimes we're strong
But you know evil is an exact science
Being carefully correctly wrong
Priests and cannibals, prehistoric animals
Everybody happy as the dead come home
Big black nemesis, parthenogenesis
No one move a muscle as the dead come home
We feel like Greeks, we feel like Romans
Centaurs and monkeys just cluster round us
We drink elixirs that we refine
From the juices of the dying
We are no monsters, we're moral people
And yet we have the strength to do this
This is the splendor of our achievement
Call in the air strike with a poison kiss
Priests and cannibals, prehistoric animals
Everybody happy as the dead come home
Big black nemesis, parthenogenesis
No one move a muscle as the dead come home
Priests and cannibals, prehistoric animals
Everybody happy as the dead come home
Big black nemesis, parthenogenesis
No one move a muscle as the dead come home
How bad it gets, you can't imagine
The burning wax, the breath of reptiles
God is not mocked, he owns our business
Karma could take us at any moment
Cover him up, I think we're finished
You know it's never been so exotic
But I don't know, my dreams are visions
We could still end up with the great big fishes
Priests and cannibals, prehistoric animals
Everybody happy as the dead come home
Big black nemesis, parthenogenesis
No one move a muscle as the dead come home

Everything That Rises Must Converge
/
Lyrics
Honour among thieves, my crackling clothes
They cover me like leaves, roll up a sleeve and hold my hand
She's saying I, ai no corrida
Kick up the soil, spoil a pattern in the sand
He's saying me, I don't believe you
But then he can't tell the water from the land
And it's blue blue blue
A colour and a surge
Everything that rises must converge
She says one day soon
You and I will merge
Everything that rises must converge
Nothing is for free the story goes
You hear it and believe, now don't you grieve or look behind
He's saying why, why do we do this?
This is the very thing that's preying on his mind
And she don't know which way to go
She says if you find it darling let me know
And he says well, this could be so
Says I'm a car crash, now tell me baby does it show
And it's blue blue blue
A colour and a surge
Everything that rises must converge
She says one day soon
You and I will merge
Everything that rises must converge
Yeah blue blue blue
A colour and a surge
Everything that rises must converge
She say one day soon
You and I will merge
Everything that rises must converge
Oh she don't know which way to go
And she says if you find it darling let me know
And he says well, this could be so
Says I'm a car crash, so tell me baby does it show
Yeah blue blue blue
A colour and a surge
Everything that rises must converge
And she says one day soon
You and I will merge
Everything that rises must converge
Yeah blue blue blue
A colour and a surge
Everything that rises must converge
She say one day soon
You and I will merge
Everything that rises must converge
And it's blue blue blue
A colour and a surge
Everything that rises must converge
She say one day soon
You and I will merge
Everything that rises must converge
Yeah blue blue blue
A colour and a surge
Everything that rises must converge
She say one day soon
You and I will merge
Everything that rises must converge
Yeah blue blue blue
A colour and a surge
Everything that rises must converge
She say one day soon
You and I will merge
Everything that rises must converge

scene name : the deep dark
characters : martyn, ren
what happens : martyn, having just shy of 4 lives, begs ren for a deal. in exchange for one live, he’ll have martyn at his beck and call. ( starts Shadow Lord development arc )
music i used as inspo  : escapism- steven universe , a crow’s trial - vane lily , our word - 36 questions ,
word count : 747
at the gates of the den, ren’s ears perk up.  someone’s approaching. an enemy or a guest he does not know, but ren resolves to greet him the same either way. ( ren just hopes they don’t threaten his home. he’s been working on it for a while, dude. sure, there aren’t any rules here, but base destruction this early…)
ren lightly smacks the side of his head. don’t think about it, he chides himself.
the footsteps are louder now. whoever it is, they’re almost here. ren opens up the gate ( glorified fences, really ) and takes a peek around. he doesn’t see anyone, but he can still hear them, ( and smell them ) so he calls out.
“ yo, whoever it is skulkin’ around in here and scaring my dogs, it’s uncool. come out and show yourself, man! “
his voice echoes around the forest for a while, until someone creeps out. it’s martyn. ( ren breathes a sigh of relief ) he looks fine, with no real injuries, but his back is too straight and his smile is too wide. ren doesn’t think for one second that he’s here innocently, not exactly. but it’s good to see him nonetheless. ( he could take martyn in a fight, couldn’t he? couldn’t he? )
martyn smiles again. and some part of ren notices, remembers it. it’s his business grin. martyn wears it when he’s trying to make a deal or scam someone. often both. he shivers. his instincts are screaming at him that it’s unsafe here, he should run, but the other part of him smiles back. ( running shows weakness. and the last thing he needs is to seem weak right now )
“ sorry about the scare, man! my bad. nice to know I can be scary, though. decided to swing by for a chat. your base looks lovely, by the way. can I come in? “ he asks.
ren opens the gate and gestures for martyn to come in. they spend a few minutes pestering each other and joking lightly about the boogeyman curse. ren hopes martyn doesn’t notice the way his hands shake in his pockets, or how his tail stops wagging when they talk about it. ( ren hopes martyn doesn’t grab his axe and swing halfway into the conversation. )
“ well, now that we’ve determined that we’re not the boogeyman, what brings you here dude? and don’t you dare tell me that you just wanted to visit. “ ren says. he wiggles his eyebrows for benefit.
martyn laughs. it sounds like a pebble skipping across a pond. it sounds like manic disbelief. it sounds like hysteria.
  “ what, can’t I just pop over to see a pal? “
  “…”
ren’s arms cross on his chest. he’s unimpressed.
“ okay, okay. so as you might’ve noticed, I’m yellow. which isn’t a very good thing to be. so I thought to myself, hey, who’s the nicest guy you know? who might be willing to spare a life to a poor soul like me? “
in spite of himself, ren smiles. ( he knows he’s being swindled, but martyn looks so damn cute when he spouts off the ‘ you’re nice ‘ spiel. let him be ) he motions for martyn to go on.
“ of course, I’m not expecting you to do this out of the kindness of your heart! “
martyn gets down on one knee.
“ woah, woah, woah. what’s going on here dude? not that I’m not flattered but…” ren stammers out.
“ milord, if you give me a life, my sword will be your sword. my shield will be your shield, and I’ll take the hit for you.” ( he says it his drama voice, and oh, if the prospect of an ally doesn’t appeal to you. )
now, ren’s not an idiot, ( no matter what cleo says to the contrary ) he knows what martyn is like. martyn wants to win. if he accepts this offer, he’ll probably end up stabbed in the back at some point. the man could give scar a run for his money.
but martyn’s useful, too. he’s surprisingly good at pvp, and his… knack for persuasion could come in handy down the road. having martyn on his side would drastically increase his chance of survival.
ren accepts. his sword is heavy against martyn’s shoulders.
“ no longer are you only martyn inthelittlewood, laddie, but on this day I dub thee Martyn, Knight of Shadows. arise, loyal knight. “ ( the accent hurts his throat a little, but that’s okay. it’ll get easier with time. )
martyn rises. martyn smiles. and behind him, his shadow grows a little bit darker.

Jonny: I find Tiktok alienating and alarming. (long beat of silence)
Alex: I've managed to avoid "big boy man" up to this point. Alisdair: Oh, we'll fix that.

Tim Meredith being revealed as the voice of the laughs in 189

Space in the Blues
Pick the low-hanging fruit
From the red tree of fluid
Is it substance abuse that’s the cause
Or did love make me do it?
Be not afraid of beauty
Do not avoid the light
Beware the cold stagnation
That comes by surprise like a thief in the night
I am sharp and divine
I am biding my time
Antiseptically clean to the end of the line
At the boundary edge
The infinity net
If there’s a limit I’ve not found it yet
So I’ll fall, fall, fall
Through the space in the blues
Nurse a dark tender bruise
In a hotbed of ruin
Is the margin of error so small
That we cannot hold to it?
Be not seduced by anger
Do not abandon trust
Deny the fragmentation
That drives all we hold dear to fall into dust
I am shimmer and glare
I am vanishing rare
Escaping like steam making love to the air
By the glowering wall
The enabling shade
Some caustic decisions have yet to be made
And I fall, fall, fall
Through the space in the blues
Squeeze the last primal juice
Under mirrors and sequins
Is the whirlpool dragging us down
Or do swimmers burst through it?
Be not in thrall to prophets
Do not regret mistakes
Dismiss the old frustration
Twists body and mind in its grip til they break
I am blessed and cursed
I am fearing the worst
Obsessively charting our last days on Earth
In the luminous dawn
The irrational gleam
With everything coming apart at the seams
I will fall, fall, fall
Through the space in the blues
UNHOLINESS
No summer time
Just winter fear
Unkind, unkind, unkind
The stricken face
The constant stare
Unwind, unwind, unwind
Waiting for an answer
Answer comes there none
Gonna never leave the nether world
Gonna never get you some
Everybody say
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Unholiness, unholiness
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Some perfect mess, some perfect mess
All improvised
There will be tears
It’s fine, it’s fine, it’s fine
Some savage grace
Is coming here
In time, in time, in time
Waiting for a reason
Reason slipped away
Gonna never leave the netherworld
This or any day
Everybody say
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Unholiness, unholiness
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Some perfect mess, some perfect mess
Talkin’ ‘bout a head shot
Talkin’ ‘bout a crimson flower
Talkin’ ‘bout the underground
Talkin’ ‘bout super powers
The signifier and the signified
The petrified and the petrified
The drones, the bones, the shrunken heads
These are the monsters under the bed
Defamation, the easy lies
The bogeyman ate all the pies
Dissent, disease, the trembling knees
And, oh, your soul is burning
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Unholiness, unholiness
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Some tenderness, some tenderness
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
In loneliness, in loneliness
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Some perfect mess, some perfect mess
PORTOBELLO HEAD
defrock me
windsock me
cock block me
in a limited way
consume me
perfume me
and groom me
wipe the mess away
sincerely..
just merely
Cuff me to the radiator Cuff me to the radiator
inflame me
rename me
mainframe me
in the light of day
it's dirt cheap
one big heap
it won't keep
shovel it away
inject me
inflect me
hook me to the generator hook me to the generator
I get on on my belly
gonna roll around
in the satellites the choirs are singing
Down in the Jelly there's a world unbound
phantasmagoria of virtue clinging
inspect me
dissect me
resurrect me
20 times a day
I hoarded
the sordid
- we all did -
then let it out to play
I went there
got bent there
blessed be the stimulator  blessed be the stimulator
I get on on my belly
gonna hit the ground
on the leatherette the tyres are burning
Schiaparelli - don't mess around:
all the pestilence of love returning
(front brain - mainframe, heavier than lead:
you'll never get the better of the Portobello Head)
SLOWLY AT FIRST THEN ALL AT ONCE
Love is where it falls and then it falls away, they say
but this view is sentimental:
I think you'll find, in both directions,
that the gradient's more gentle:
love grows by increments - one day that revelatory kiss
then she's who you spend your nights with -
who you mix your essences with and who you will be the one..
you have the fights with.
And the ways of the world are strange - the steeple-bells they chime
saying: 'history don't repeat itself; it rhymes.'
Slowly it comes at first, then all at the one time
Like the last tree that keeps its leaves on through november
but after the violence of storm has blown the branches bare the winter won't remember
it's surprising how much can change and yet (for now) appear the same
then one spasm and convulsion: after that you'll never see that world again
and the ways of the world are cruel and beautiful sometimes
it seems to be a common paradigm:
slowly it comes at first, then all at the one time
Ubu Roi and Mu'ammar: with all their sadopopular ambitions,
(characterised by many lies
beyond the normal scope of even politicians)
dismantled one by one the democratic institutions of their nations.
Then the knocks at midnight came and the executions, pogroms and deportations.
And everyone ignored the signs:
the gradual crescendo of their crimes.
Slowly it comes at first, then all at the one time
This is an anthem to all the gods and goddesses of growth and demolition
I see it all with my thumb in my mouth from a foetal position.
To break down all the work of years you'd think would take some doing
but after a while I think you'll find there will be a few things that have been... ...brewing.
And one by one the small catastrophes align:
the fails, the falls, the ultimate decline
slowly it comes at first then all at the one time.
slowly it comes at first then all at the one time.
GOOD DISRUPTION
Down here where the facts decline
And the market falls
Start seeing the aura shine
Or see nothing at all
We are riding a wave of time
Get onto it, get onto it
We are changing a paradigm
Get over it, get over it
Gotta get some good disruption in your life
Gotta see who shakes the jar and set them right
When the the nights are long and the days are hard and bright
Gotta get some good disruption in your life
Down here where the robots dream
And the gears engage
Start feeling a silver gleam
Or feel nothing but rage
We are seeking a frequency
Lock on to it, lock on to it
We are scratching at secrecy
Locked out of it, locked out of it
Gotta get some good disruption in your life
Tell the ants inside the jar before they fight
When the the nights are long and the days are hard and bright
Gotta get some good disruption in your life
Shoobie doobie dot-dash
Tickertape and wah-wah
Ramalama bebop
Go doolally la-la
Hanky panky mish-mash
Chemicals and ya ya
Ai caramba flip-flop
Go rat-a-tat ta ta
Gotta get some good disruption in your life
Gotta see who shakes the jar and set them right
When the the nights are long and the days are hard and bright
Gotta get some good disruption in your life
EVERYTHING HAPPENS SO MUCH
There's too many shits and giggles
too many flaming swords
so many ripped on the Frazzledrip
(see the quality finish of the waterboards!)
So much is drained of virtue
So much has jumped the shark
Going to seed, trying to to find the feed:
way downriver with the oligarch.
I will interrogate my spirit guide -
Ask her why the world is amplified:
How it happens
why everything happens so much?
Why Everything Happens
Everything Happens So Much
There's too many schticks and scandals -
too many dicks in the cake -
too many licks from the crazy stick,
all too terrible to contemplate.
Too much enshrined to passion
- the ramifications sprawl.
See the fever dreams of the welfare queens
coming red-handed from the sad-sack ball.
I'm going out to brace the oracle
Find out how much is metaphorical
How it happens
why everything happens so much?
Why Everything Happens
Everything Happens So Much
too many shits and giggles
too many waterboards
all of the 'stop at nothing'
all of the flaming swords
too much enshrined to passion
(see how the passions sprawl)
too many schticks and scandals
we fear the shopping mall
so much is drained of virtue
so much has jumped a shark
so many paths to Glory
(follow the Oligarch)
so many lives that shatter
so many hearts that break
so little left to worry
so very much at stake
I will interrogate my spirit guide -
Ask her why the world is amplified
How it happens
why everything happens so much?
Why Everything Happens
Everything Happens So Much
DIFFERENT STORY
That boy seems nice enough
It’s a shame he ain’t bright enough
Just not wrapped tight enough
On his way to death or glory
That girl seems fine to me
Seems to know her own mind to me
Kinda walks the line for me
In between some different stories
A different story written on the wind
A symphony of noise and beauty
Fill ourselves with wonder and speak of senseless things
And the song that tomorrow sings
Means the story starts again
A different story never ends
That girl might break ‘em up
Or that boy could make it up
Either way they’re waking up
Tell tall tales, shake some action
The city is a book for them
Everybody there looks like them
They know it’s up to them
To make themselves the main attraction
A different story written on the years
A testament of sound and fury
Keep it in the sunshine and water it with tears
And the fruit that the future brings
Means the story starts again
A different story never ends
The things we’ve seen, the hands we’ve held
Marks on the map and notes in the margin
Small print, tall tales, fables and faded flowers
The stuff of legend? Ha! - pure invention
The rumour mill, lies, fact and fiction
Sideways looks, secret glances
Whispers, yelps and news reports
The strangers met and the friends we’ve lost
The little kids watched Jackanory
The grown-ups have a different story
1000 DIFFERENT BOOKS
Stealing all the years
Not gaining time
Hold the moment standing still
Under a stranger sky
Cry into the future
Cry into the future
Rolling back the mind
Let reason slide
Buildings raised on shifting sands
Commence a slow decline
Cry into the future
Cry into the future
Cry into the future
Cry into the future
Guided now by instinct
Negotiate disguise
The pedigrees are mongrels, eagles rooks
A book read by a thousand people is a thousand different books
Seeing through new eyes
What’s left to know?
Bound by logic’s ordered line
Pulled by the undertow
Cry into the future
Cry into the future
Cry into the future
Cry into the future
The painting has more layers
X-rayed and peeled away
The camera blurred the picture when it shook
A book read by a thousand people is a thousand different books
Pass these memories on
These things survive
A forest turning into words
Or falling to the fire
Cry into the future
Cry into the future
Cry into the future
Cry into the future
The path of least resistance
Delegate the ride
Set free from all reality’s cruel hooks
A book read by a thousand people is a thousand different books
A book read by a thousand people is a thousand different books
WILD WORLD
Well the days are slipping past now:
days of calibrated sorrow.
This is our little piece of history
(maybe we get some tomorrow?).
There's still the trouble with the off-switch
and still the struggle with the satyr
but there's nothing much to see here now;
not a lot that really matters.
And the Wild World listens as you sing
and the Wild World wants you for a sunbeam
..although the light is fading
there's still enough to read by
and the world will hold a candle for you
as the hallucinations speed by
and you'd better make your peace with
all the things you know are true now
and all the things you didn't do
..that you're never gonna do now
For the Wild World shines in the rain
and the Wild World slips through your fingers
You can try and sum it up
- to tell somebody how you found it
well the best of luck with that
You won't get your arms around it
because the falling of the sparrows
because the rising of the larks
because the little boats a' sailing (on the Wine Dark Sea)
because the drinkers in the parks...
and the making of the mountains
the stones you kept as souvenirs:
the fragments you have gathered up
through the distortion of the years
And the Wild World spins you into space
and the Wild World wishes you the best now
because it loves you very much
it made a place for you to live in
complicated to the touch:
and neither vengeful nor forgiving
embrace your torments now:
your many lacerations,
your lamentations,
your thirst for adoration ...
and at the bottom of it all
there may be nothing there at all
..and Oh! to this accomodation
and to this grand delusion -
I can be true
and everything is humming;
World, I cannot hold you close enough
this I leave with you
.... I leave with you

Overall I’d like to recommend: The Oh Hellos, Machine Gun Kelly, alt J, and Death Cab for Cutie but I’m excluding them from these selections because I just have TOO MUCH of their music...
Tried to get a good mix of genres!

BMW Begins 2020 With Multiple Award Wins
BMW has kicked off 2020 by adding 13 industry awards to the brand’s ever-growing collection of accolades. The spectrum of awards, including a quartet of category wins in the What Car? Awards 2020, Company Car Today CCT100 Awards and Great British Fleet Awards, underlines the variety of the BMW model line-up and its class-leading status in multiple segments.
Four category wins in What Car? Awards 2020
BMW’s 3 Series and 5 Series triumphed at the What Car? Awards 2020, winning praise for their usability, ease of ownership and advanced technologies.
The 3 Series won the Safety Award, with the 330e also taking home trophies for Best Plug-in Hybrid Car and Best Executive Car.
Steve Huntingford, Editor, What Car?, said: “The astonishing BMW 330e is not only the best plug-in hybrid you can buy, but the best executive car full stop. It slickly integrates the latest green technology with the long-held wants and needs of people shopping in this class.”
He added that the advanced plug-in hybrid was easy to live with, that it is “of the very highest standard everywhere inside” and is “fantastic to drive, yet well priced and cheap to run”.
The 5 Series reigned supreme in the fiercely-contest Best Luxury Car category. After announcing it as What Car?’s favourite luxury car since the seventh-generation version was launched in 2016, Huntingford added: “not only is it the most comfortable and quietest car in its price bracket, but it also offers a better driving position than any comparable car and its feature-packed, user-friendly infotainment system is light years ahead of everything else”. The model’s frugal running costs also contributed to the win, with What Car? highlighting that it was cheaper than its rivals to run privately, or as a company car.
Quadruple BMW victory at the Great British Fleet Awards
BMW was voted Fleet Manufacturer of the Year at the 2020 Great British Fleet Awards, with Fleet World applauding the commitment of its UK fleet team in making a BMW business purchase easy and straightforward.
Martyn Collins, Editor, Fleet World said: “BMW have upped up the ante in the last year with Rob East and the team having implemented changes to bring sustainable channel management to the company. They’ve also aligned the BMW and MINI brands to complement, rather than compete against each other, all working together to make buying a BMW easier.”
The new 1 Series and 3 Series were also category winners. The 1 Series was named Best Lower Medium Fleet Car, with the 3 Series winning Best Fleet Compact Executive Car and Best New Fleet Car.
Confirming why the 1 Series was victorious, Collins highlighted its impressive interior space and connectivity. He concluded that it was “great to drive and impressively refined”.
He was equally complimentary of the 3 Series, adding: “At Fleet World, we’re big fans of the latest model launched just over a year ago, as it’s such a complete all-rounder, offering more interior space, impressive tech, combined with efficient engines to keep costs down.”
1 Series, 3 Series and 5 Series awarded at Company Car Today CCT100 Awards
BMW underlined the suitability of its model range for fleets and company drivers after the 1 Series, 3 Series and 5 Series were all category winners in the Company Car Today CCT100 Awards.
The CCT100 is Company Car Today’s definitive list of the 100 cars that can fulfil any business car requirement, and it was the 3 Series that was voted number one, winning the CCT100 Car of the Year Award. The 3 Series added to its success with the Compact Executive Car of the Year Award.
The awards haul was bolstered with the 1 Series winning the Premium Lower Medium Car of the Year Award and the 5 Series being named Executive Car of the Year.
On awarding BMW, Paul Barker, Editor, said: “It was a big year of change for BMW, with the new 1 Series and 3 Series being launched in 2019, but these awards prove the brand has successfully and brilliantly replaced two fleet favourites with models that are more efficient, cleverer and better all-round than their predecessors, while the 5 Series, a former CCT100 Car of the Year, continues to be the best Executive model by some distance.”
There was further recognition for the 3 Series at the Company Car and Van Awards, the 330e adding to its growing number of trophies by winning the Plug-in Hybrid Car of the Year Award. Company Car and Van editor Andrew Walker praised 330e as “arguably the best plug-in car full stop.”

Evi Vine - I Am the Waves
London's ethereal alt-rock artist Evi Vine presents their new album 'Black Light White Dark', a stunning collection of six tracks produced by Dave Izumi (Nordic Giants, Ed Harcourt, Magic Numbers) and mixed by Phill Brown (Talk Talk, Jimmy Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, John Martyn, Robert Palmer). This album also features contributions from The Cure's Simon Gallup and Peter Yates of Fields of the Nephili, as well as Martyn Barker (Shriekback, Billy Bragg, Marianne Faithfull, Goldfrapp) and Geraldine Swayne (Faust).
As a group, Evi Vine is joined by Steven Hill, Matt Tye and David 'GB' Smith. Their music explores the dark elemental nature of the human heart, as well as environmental and post-apocalyptic themes. Sublime and haunting, they create a unique and uncompromising atmosphere with gossamer vocals and precise orchestration. Reverential, physical music, it evokes a rare experience that is beautiful, sparse and deeply intimate. (press release)
