20 Years of “Winning the Hard Way”

Yoda: Dark Rendezvous turns 20 years old today, and as it is my absolute favorite Star Wars book, I wanted to take some time to talk about it and what it means to me. I cannot recommend this book enough to any Star Wars fan. It really has something for everyone, and is a great place to start in the Expanded Universe because it is a stand alone novel and the only characters you are expected to know are Yoda and Dooku. In addition to being a great Star Wars book, it is a rare gem in that it also has something meaningful to say about life itself.

As it was told to me, Lucasfilm wanted a Yoda centric book as part of their Clone Wars Multimedia project in the years between the release of Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. The people at Del Rey hemmed and hawed over who could even write such a thing and do it well, before they eventually landed on Sean Stewart. In my mind he was the perfect pick for a Yoda book, as he has a background of studying Eastern philosophy, which is what George Lucas based the Jedi philosophy off of. He only had four months to write the book, and was still able to deliver something poignant and deeply meaningful, as a Yoda book should be. I think that if someone who did not have this understanding had been picked, there is no way they would have been able to deliver such a book in four months. Sean Stewart was able to stand on the shoulders of the great philosophers who came before to help him write something that was truly worthy of Yoda. I think that many writers (across media types and eras of publishing/producing) forget that the Jedi have Buddhist/Daoist roots, and their writing suffers for it.

Much less impressive, but still relevant, I took a general education class in college titled “Religion and Society in India.” I got a terrible case of pneumonia during the Buddhism unit, and as much as I did try to keep up with the readings, my brain was soup and I was not able to really ingest the text. When it came time for the assignments and test, I just wrote my answers under the philosophy of WWYS (What Would Yoda Say?) and still pulled a decent grade for the unit. Outside of the movies, I pulled much of that WWYS from this book.

Yoda: Dark Rendezvous delves deep into topics of loss, failure, and struggling for the best possible outcome when the deck is stacked against you. I first read the book when I was 13 or 14, and it has always stuck with me as one of the most meaningful books I have read. When there is darkness in my life, it is something I pick back up to renew hope, and really, that’s what Star Wars is about isn’t it?

G'raha had never learned how to lie. Trepidation scrawled across his face, etched in the lines of his mild grimace and then widening eyes as Maruk shrugged and finished the letter with a flourish of his quill.

Falxian leaned over to peck G'raha's cheek reassuringly. "Master Manderville is far too important for something like this," he said. "We will even leave our titles off. How many actually know we are the Warriors of Light. Like Rukkai said, he will just send back some gifts..."

"...and not even bother coming," Maruk finished. He sprinkled sand on the ink to help it dry, then carefully lay it on the desk. A head and a half taller than his Miqo'te beloved(s), Maruk only needed to pitch forward a little to plant a kiss on G'raha's other cheek. "You worry too much, kitten."

G'raha's entire face reddened. He stammered something, perhaps another reservation that he had, but Fal shot Maruk a sly look and wrapped his arms around the shorter Miqo'te. Both of them went tumbling back on the soft bed with a squawk from G'raha that soon dissolved into a moan.

Maruk rifled through the desk for a stamp, listening with half an ear and the leisure of a man who knew a feast awaited him at the dinner table to the sounds coming from the bed. A good minute later, invitation to their (very real) wedding properly folded and sealed, he pulled free the cravat at his neck and joined the two Miqo'tes.

To all their credit, they quite forgot about inviting Godbert Manderville until six months later, when the reminder appeared in person...

So don’t judge me but I started reading Dragel AU Harry Potter fics ( I fell into a Theo x HP hole…) and there is this one recurring character by the name of Hadrian Maruke who is like always in armor with a mask on and I’m like wtf???? What kind of mask??? what kind of armor???? Like pls describe it and don’t just assume I know.

Like is he in like full on shiny gold plated knight armor with a gas mask on? Is he wearing like Japanese samurai armor with a avant- guard masquerade mask? All the fics seem to have him and I go 0 idea what this man looks like.

Dua hari ini bener-bener jiwa raga rasanya dikuasai oleh rasa marah.

Karena apa? Yup, apa lagi kalo bukan pemberitaan tentang bangsa kita yang lagi nggak baik-baik saja. Ditambah lagi, saya melihatnya dari sudut pandang "orang dalam" alias pemerintahan yang offsidenya terang-terangan.

Sampai di satu titik.... baru aja beberapa menit lalu malam ini.... Kok capek ya?

Scrolling nggak berenti-berenti, dari berita satu ke berita yang lain. Pendapat satu ke pendapat lain. Diselang kabar rumah tangga selebriti. Disusul konten-konten kekinian; marriage is scary, gentle parenting, dll. Yang rasanya semua itu jadi bikin mual. Muak juga.

Yes, I'm over than overwhelmed.

Mungkin ini namanya badai informasi, terlalu maruk kita terus cari. Sampai menumpuk, tanpa ada yang kita benar-benar proses satupun! Sampai infomasi yang sebenernya bisa bermanfaat, jadi nggak berarti lagi.

Menelan Rasa Sakit

Ada masa dalam hidup di mana keheningan malam hari terasa lebih riuh dari biasanya. Ada bising yang memecah tenang, yang hulunya adalah kepala sendiri. Ada pikiran yang sibuk mencari-cari jawab, menyimpul semua hal yang sebenarnya hanya ketakutan. Ada tangis yang terisak, terasa begitu sesak dan sukar dibendung alirannya.

Mengapa diam-diam aku merasa ingin hilang dari semua hal yang tidak aku suka wujud kenyataannya, dari semua orang yang tidak ku inginkan kehadirannya, dari semua caruk-maruk yang mendekap hidupku dengan bentuk perasaan kecewa?

Sebetulnya ini apa?

Aku bertanya-tanya bagaimana rasanya jika aku bisa menghapus diriku dari ingatan semua orang, seolah-olah aku tidak pernah benar-benar ada di hidup mereka. Bagaimana rasanya jika aku memulai kehidupan di sebuah tempat baru yang di dalamnya tidak ku temukan lagi rasa pahit, getir dan luka di masa lalu.

Ada masa aku ingin menghilang dan tidak ditemukan oleh siapapun, kecuali oleh diriku sendiri. Sebab sejauh apapun akan pergi, aku tidak akan bisa lari dari jiwa yang melekat dalam ragaku.

Semoga suatu hari nanti aku akan menemukan cara untuk bertahan tanpa berlari, sebab dalam hal ini, aku harus mampu menelan seluruh rasa sakit, sendirian.
