TMNT ONE SHOT - Holiday Season - A Special gift
Christmas was not your favorite holiday, at least you had a mutant turtle to help out in this trying times (GN READER, Tw: dysfunctional family, arguments and bickering related to food, crying mentioned)
Fluff - makeout / first kiss with *insert turtle you like* after a shitty xmas (English isn’t my first language and I didn’t proof read this 😗✌️, pls don’t hesitante to correct me if you see something off putting, I hope you guys still like it!)
Tumblr media
You climb up the last steps of the fire scape connecting the roof top of your building, dragging your feet as you groan one last time, it’s impressive you can hear your relatives arguing several stores bellow, you have lost count how many times people can pick on each other on their free will. You drag your hands along your face and sigh, you want nothing more but to distance yourself from that.
You didn’t get to feel much of The “Christmas spirit” everyone seem to love and cherish since you left your childhood years, and it seems that every year you learn to dislike December a little bit more. As much as The Grinch was deeply relatable for you lately, you didn’t want it to be, having a dysfunctional family in such a tender Holiday was kinda like receiving punch in the gut every day until 25th of December died out. After the first 10, the warm smiles and happy wishes over a great season seem to constantly mock your misery, leaving you bitter and resentful.
Leaning over the edge of your building, you check the many light up windows and different narratives playing along on your neighborhood, a family all gathered up taking a picture by their decorated tree on the left, you let a chuckle out by thrilled parents filming a rather young child by your right, to what it seems taking their first steps by their excitement.
it was nice seeing different kind of life’s playing along the fairy lights on the streets bellow, secretly wishing yours would be a little bit like theirs, reality seems distant as you accidentally disassociate, thinking how -your- family would be seen compared to those merry ones, your parents resentment growing against each other every minute, barking mean comments left and right to you messing apparently everything up. The perfect picture of a broken home. Awful to see, awful to be part of.
You sigh as you recall what drove you to the edge moments ago, a silly comment really, it was so small compared to the constant bickering around the whole month of December, but picking on you eating a single cookie? That you made? You spent the whole day cooking. The whole day trying to have a good Christmas, you can feel yourself fuming as you remember how much you have worked your ass off the whole month for their presents, for a good Christmas dinner, as they wouldnt even buy a single pair of sock for you. Give you a single “thank you” for all of your efforts, You tried, you really did, Despite all the odds against your favor, you still tried, when you finally decide you give yourself a taste of your hard work, your family dares to give you shit about your eating habits? No. Nuh uh.
That was the last drop. You marched to your room as you heard someone giving you shit one last time after harshly dropping the plate on the dining table. knew you would be screwed when they found out you were gone, no amount of locks would keep them at bay for longer than 2 to 3 hours. But god, you needed a time out. Yes, you would rather freeze your butt on a dirty and frozen roof top than to listen to another passive aggressive bullshit comment.
“you have been hiding here all this time?” A familiar voice fills out of the foggyness of your thoughts, your head turns around slightly, watching a well known silhouette marvelously shining through the moonlight “nobody’s seen you in days” his tone isn’t harsh or accusative, you can almost hear a incredulous chuckle out of him, he speaks lightly, curious to your whereabouts, you can also hear him landing near the regular rooftop entrance, you stare once again to the uncountable windows and buildings in front of you.
He waits for you to retaliate, reply with witty comeback, flash him an apologetic smile, anything, but silence wins you over. He knew something was up when you were this quiet, your family would be the main topic when you vanished like that, he also knew you needed space to deal with such matter, in due time, you would ask for comfort, you would seek for his presence, just like when he comes to you, yet this time it never came, you never came. The ninja turtle slowly leans over, trailing his eyes ahead as you do.
A sniff catches him off guard, he knows it shouldnt, but it does, he glances at you to finally see your glossy eyes staring ahead, a blush covering your cheeks and nose; You look adorable, sad, disappointed, frustrated, but still can’t help but to find you adorable, his hearts stings as you rapidly catch a sneaky tear roll down your cheek, turning your back at him before he can catch you in this arms.
“Didn’t want to bother.” your voice comes out more shaky than you would like, a bit hoarse due to the current season, you rub your hands together, if he questioned about your well being, you could just blame it on the cold weather,on the perfect snowflakes falling above you two.
“You could never bother” he trails along slowly, weary as if you were a scared cat, afraid that any hasty movement could make you dash “how about we go to the lair? Everyone misses you.” he gently places a hand on your back, “I miss you” he ponders, moving slowly to be by your side, your eyes don’t meet his, he wants to lean down, he wants your eyes locked on his, he wants you to trust him as much as he trusts you, he wants nothing more but to hold you close and kiss your sorrows and tears away.
he stays put instead, waiting on your call.
You instinctively turns towards him, his warmth drawing you in, you want to smile, to tell him over and over that eveything is fine, you were just busy, he doesn’t have to worry.
Instead your mouth is pressed in a tight line, you can feel your lips trembling when you try to speak, you know words will come out wobbly, and for the first time, you won’t be able to hold back tears in front of him. This is pathetic. You think, you want to be at the lair. You want to be near them, but how can you explain you can’t bare to see their love, brotherhood and companionship tonight? You can’t feel part of it? This night isn’t about you, it has never been and it will never will be, you just get used to it.
You look up; your thoughts swimming through your eyes, you open and close your mouth, how do you explain you crave affection, but can’t seem to bear it?
The turtle holds you in a swift movement, carrying you with ease, gently but still firmly holding you against his plastron in princess style, the familiar adrenaline rushes trough you as you can feel him jumping from roof top to roof top, you don’t have words to question him, astoundingly admiring him as you stare at his focused face facing the horizon ahead.
You close your eyes for a moment, learning your face over the valley of his neck and collarbone, in a blink of an eye, songs, chatter and laughter fills the air and you remember you are in New York , the most magical city to be this time of year. Yes, you had probably the crappiest month of your life, but for a moment, you let yourself drift away in bliss, focusing on sounds and passing colorful lights.
He settles both you on a empty office balcony, everything is dark inside accept for the faint lights on a very worn out tree looking back at you, you check your own reflection, your eyes are red and puffy, your hair is uneven, and there are millions of colors shining behind you.
Tumblr media
The Rockefeller was the most iconic place all over New York during Christmas time, slowly turning around, the tree and it’s surroundings leaving you both speechless, you loved Christmas lights, it was impressive to say the least how the decorations were absolutely ethereal. ever so slowly, you both sit down and admire the virw quietly.
“You don’t have to deal with everything on your own” is the first line he graces you, you wanna laugh with that alone, look who’s talking you think over, but you can’t say it, you know he is right, he chuckles as if he could read your mind, he gently tilts your head upwards “next time, call me. Text me. Reach out, for goddess sake.” He smiles at you, you let out a huff, smiling shyly “you have so much on your plate already, I just, I didn’t-“
“You deserve so much better” he shakes his head, lips pressed in a thin line. Over many years of his life, he has thought he had too little and humans had absolutely everything on top side, it was unfair and left a sour taste over his mouth. you have shown him that kind of thought was childish, he had a family, he had people he could count on, that’s alone is a lot more than what many people have, He can’t take that fact for granted anymore.
He also knew your biggest wish was to be part of something like that, his biggest wish was to make you feel part of it, maybe even something more.
You shyly lace your pinky with one of his fingers, ducking away as you felt your face burning under his deep gaze, you were so appreciative of his family, of him, of his patience and dedication, to say you have a crush on the turtle was an understatement, everything the he did made your heart skip a beat, the way he would always seek out for you during hangouts, how he cared for your preferences and well being, you found yourself unable to look away when he was training, when he would laughs so care freely, when he gets lost on his interests and everything seems to slow down around the both of you. You rest your head gently over his shoulder, you know you can get lost in his eyes quickly, you bite your lip when you think of his, and how heavenly it would feel against yours.
“It’s alright..” that what you manage to come up with, it’s cheap and it’s empty, but you don’t know what else to say. “No it’s not.” He says it firmly, interlocking your fingers tightly to prove his point.
Sometimes, you swear he feels the same as you do, you swear you can catch a soft longing from him across the dinging table, across the dojo over self defense training, short glances that are filled with unspoken words, that the innocent touches are not so innocent anymore. but life has taught you not to hang on those wishes, not to have hope. It was hurtful to do so.
“why do you care?” you let a frustrated sigh out, you hate how you just asked that the moment the words left your mouth, you aren’t frustrated at him per say, more towards your feelings, at how clammy your hands feel around his, how fast your heart is beating, how you secretly hope he knows that you didn’t mean to let that question out, how much of a chicken you were, how you fought annoying daydreaming scenarios with him on daily basis and yet just wish he kissed you already.
“Because I do.” he makes you look at him again, brushing a strand of hair behind your ear, and for the first time tonight, you look at him, you really look at him, how he is breathing fast, how dilated his pupils are when he looks at you, how his thumb drags temptingly over the bottom of your lips, letting out a shaky breath as he squeezes your hand one last time.
“because I just do.” His gaze is locked in yours, pleading, full of what you have denied yourself for years, telling eveything you have ever wanted without any words. He was yours, and you are his.
you finally tell yourself fuck it and kiss him.
It’s desperate, it’s passionate, it’s eveything you want and more, you drag your nails on the nape of his neck and draws him into your space, your chest hits is plastron as he grips your hips as he pins you down against the ground, the way you hook one of your leg on top of his shell drives out a moan out of him, making you arch your back, you nibble his bottom lip as you swear you gonna lose your mind.
You don’t know how long has passed, your grip on him is as strong as his as you lay beneath him, you makeout until you are both out of breath, until the anger and frustration has been worn out and you two slowly melt together, once fervent kisses turns into soft, gentle ones, until you are both looking at each other, smiling and giving pecks between giggles, translating eveything you have both been feeling towards each other
“Goddamn.” he draws a hearty laugh out of both you, the turtle rests is forehead against yours, sighing dreamily, giving you feather light kisses on your cheeks as you pull him closer.
“I care a lot about you too.” you drunkly smile to him, caressing his cheeks tenderly, “I sure hope so.” you hook your arms around his neck, laughing at his antics.
“I gotta tell you something tho.” you tilt your head curiously, he looks down at your lips, licking instinctively as you bite yours.
“you surprisingly taste like gingerbread cookies”
That makes you giggle once more.

Thinking way too hard about the queer possibilities of X-Men ‘97
When X-Men ‘97 was first announced, I’ll admit I was kind of ambivelent to the entire project... It felt very nostalgia-focused and was just less interesting to me then an all-new X-Men cartoon that could do its own thing without being burdened with established canon...
...and then I listened to the X-Men 60 Uncanny Years event earlier this year and hearing the executive producer of the series discuss what the X-Men meant to him as a kid as a gay black man in Florida basically changed my mind about the entire project. Now I’m excited for it!
The X-Men are so fucking queer. Even ignoring the ways that the mutant metaphor have been used to discuss queer issues before queer issues could be discussed textually, Marvel’s merry mutants just have... so many queer members and even more when you expand the list to include sub-textual and intended queerness.
So, with all that in mind, I did a little thinking and decided to take some guesses about who could make for queer representation in '97... Let’s dive in!
Part One: The Comic Canon Gays
Let’s start with the characters who are explicitly no-subtext-required queer in the comic books themselves. These are a few of the characters Marvel uses in Pride events and generally parades around every June.
Northstar
Tumblr media
Jean-Paul Beaubier may seem like the vanilla ice cream of this rainbow sundae, but there’s far more going on with this character then the “Marvel’s first explicitly gay superhero” title that he is so often boiled down to. A French-Canadian superstar athlete, he’s lived never being entirely sure if his skiing career success was a result of his talent or his mutant abilities.
While his depiction in X-Men The Animated Series just had him be painfully French-Canadian with an on-the-nose accent and French exclamations, there’s a mean catty gay under the surface that is just waiting to be unleashed. They could also adapt his famous wedding arc, wherein he married his husband Kyle Jinadu...
Tumblr media
Also he hates cops, so y’know... Maybe Marvel did nail the queer experience on their first try?
Iceman
Tumblr media
Bobby Drake is arguably the most famous queer character at Marvel. A member of the original five X-Men, he was famously confirmed as gay when his teenage self was transported to the present and, with some unsolicited help from a teenage Jean Grey, questioned why his older self remaining closeted, even in a world that was (comparatively at least) accepting of queer desire.
In the original show, he showed unrequited interest in Polaris, as he had in the comics before his coming-out. This reboot could potentially give a more grounded and less fantastical take on coming-out then what he had in the comics... or maybe time travel will be involved again - who knows really!
Prodigy
Tumblr media
David Allyene, aka Prodigy, is one of the most notable bi men at Marvel with one of the most distinctive coming-out stories. His mutant powers cause him to instantly learn things that other people know, hence the name Prodigy, and, through his powers, he also learned his own sexuality. How’s that for a crazy journey of self-discovery.
Prodigy is a newer character who did not appear in the original animated series at all, so there’s no continuity concerns there...
Mystique and Destiny
Tumblr media
Destiny, also known as Irene Adler, met her lover Mystique when he was presenting as male and operating as a consulting detective in Victorian London.
Yeah uh. This is implying what you think it is.
The two of them have been lovers for centuries now, though both took other partners at different points during their relationship. Their love is something special though and together they raised Rogue as a child - as well as maybe sired Nightcrawler together? That was once intended to be Nightcrawler’s origin, but it was famously scrapped due to Marvel editorial not wanting to depict a child that is a product of a queer relationship at the time... but now this November a new comic will explore the “true” origin of Nightcrawler, so maybe Mystique/Destiny having a biological child is back on the table!
Mystique was, of course, in the original series. I’m not sure the actual odds of her relationship with Irene being acknowledged in ‘97 - partially just because I imagine Marvel would be concerned about backlash to queer villains... but also they’re adorable and good to me so I’d like them!
Captain Britain and Askani
Tumblr media
Betsy Braddock and Rachel Summers are two incredibly complicated characters to summarize. Rachel is the time-displaced daughter of Scott and Jean from a hypothetical alternate feature, while Betsy Braddock spent like 30 years of her publication history trapped in the body of Kwannon, a Japanese assassin. While these two characters are some of Marvel’s most actively in-your-face unquestionably queer characters - the last Betsy story had a surprising amount of implied sex for only five issues - they’ve never really had a chance to shine in a multimedia way (well, at least not with Betsy in her own body and not being merged with Kwannon).
In the original show, Rachel cameoed briefly as a prisoner of Apocalypse while Pyslocke appeared without being named - assumedly they didn’t want to bother explaining the body-swap storyline. Personally, if they were to be in the show, I’d suggest that Betsy should be introduced as having inherited her brother’s title of Captain Britain, with Pyslocke of the original show being revealed to have been Kwannon in her own body all along...
Part Two: The New Mutants
There’s so many queer New Mutants that I’m just giving them their own category here... plus, with Sunspot being in the main cast, I wouldn’t be surprised if the rest of the time got (Sun)spotlighted as well!
Note that the sapphics of the first generation of New Mutants can also be mixed and matched when it comes to shipping. I present them based on the pairings that are currently canon/teased in the present comics, but Dani/Xuan, Xuan/Kitty, Kitty/Rahcel, etc. are all valid too and could be within the cards for the show.
Karma & Galura
Tumblr media
The first explicit lesbian of the X-Men line, Xuân Cao Mạnh is a refugee of the Vietnam Boat Crisis, a thing which makes no sense when you consider that she is still canonically like 20-something years old in 2023. Her coming-out was a much lower-key affair then Jean-Paul’s, with her friends just casually running into her at the Exploding Person festival (i.e., Burning Man) with a shaved pink haircut and already travelling with her two “girlfriends”.
After the musical festival, she proceeded to fall in love with her roommate Kitty Pryde and then her co-worker Dani Moonstar, both of which were never (textually) requited. Recently, she’s started dating the winged mutant Galura and finally gotten to do stuff like “kiss a woman on-panel regularly” after two decades of being a lesbian denied a girlfriend...
She has cameoed in X-Men ‘92-related media with a design that is truly terrible IMO, but I think she could be rebooted and appear in this series in her full glory... especially after the New Mutants movie left her out entirely!
Mirage and Wolfsbane
Tumblr media
Introduced in the original New Mutants run, Dani Moonstar and Rahne Sinclair share a unique telepathic connection, helpfully described as them being “soul-mates.” The Comic Book Code prohibited depictions of queer people, but uh. This first run is incredibly not subtle, even as Rahne nominally has interest her male teammate Cannonball.
Unfortunately, post-Claremont, their relationship was more or less abandoned for a few decades (coinciding with a massive downward spiral in Rahne content in general) climaxing with Rahne being killed off entirely in an allegory for transphobic violence... Thankfully, she recovered from her death and has recently been written by a non-binary author and now a trans author, both of whom have leaned back into the idea that these “soul-mates” may, in fact, have romantic feelings for each other.
Oh, also they were explicitly gay in the movie. So. Good for them for that!
Magik and Shadowkat
Tumblr media
Another classic pair of X-Men “roommates,” Illyana Rasputina and Kate Pryde are another Claremont-created “soul-mate” duo - albeit without the telepathic bond. After decades of queer-coding, both were able to do queer-adjacent things explicitly for the first time in the Krakoa era, with Illyana asking a group of people of various gender presentations to make out with her and Kate kissing a tattoo artist who looks suspiciously like her bestie on-panel.
Pryde famously lost the spot of “Teen X-Men PoV character” to Jubilee in the show, but maybe X-Men ‘97 could give her a second chance... plus Illyana is one of the most popular X-Men characters not given a full spotlight in the original show, in spite of her more or less being an A-list X-Men in 2023. I don’t know if Marvel is brave enough to make this one canon, but I do think these two are two of the most obviously missing characters from the ‘97 line-up.
Escapade
Tumblr media
Shela Sexton, aka Escapade, is a transgender sapphic who debuted in Marvel Pride last year and has since then had a starring role in the most recent New Mutants series. She has the incredibly unique power of the ability to “steal” things from people - including everything from stealing physical objects like their wallet to stealing abstract concepts like their emotional or physical state. Her character also generally has embodied the intersectional approach to mutant identity which has become more and more prevalent in the modern era - her mutant identity and trans identity are both important to her character, but neither are allegories for the other.
I think she’s probably too new to be added to the X-Men ‘97 cast pragmatically, but maybe they could have snuck in a cameo at the last minute? Idk. I figured I’d include her on the list.
Part Three: Let’s Get Wild!
Okay. Fuck it. Let’s talk about some comic book justifications that could be used to queer up the actual main cast from the original classic X-Men The Animated Series.
Jubilee
Tumblr media
Jubilation Lee, the teen PoV lead of the X-Men, has been written as queer a handful of times, but never explicitly in 616. Most notably, she was gay in an AU Runaways story (written by N.D. Stevenson), where she dated a bisexual version of Pixie as well as an ice-powered sapphic named Frostbite. Monet also had a crush on her in the X-Men ‘92 animation-inspired comic book series. In terms of 616 content, her relationship with Laura Kinney has often been read in a sapphic way, especially in Liu’s X-23 series where Laura notably breaks up with her boyfriend only for Jubilee to be waiting back at her apartment to go out with her.
Storm
Tumblr media
Ororo Munroe, aka Storm, famously has had a subtextual Sapphic fling with the bundle of chaos that is Yukio. They two met for the first time when Ororo went to Japan and their time together was almost immediately followed by her famous punk Storm era, which is very queer when you consider that context. Yukio was also later made explicitly queer in Fox’s Deadpool 2 movie, though the movie character doesn’t share much of the personality and thrill-seeking antics of her comic book counterpart...
Storm is the central protagonist of the original Claremont Uncanny X-Men and will be central to the ‘97 series as well. It’d be really bold to confirm her as queer, but I’d say this is the kind of move that would be worth it if they want this to stand out among X-Men adaptations.
Wolverine, Phoenix, and Cyclops
Tumblr media
Finally, Jean Grey, Scott Summers, and Logan were implied to have been in a poly relationship throughout most of the Krakoa era - though they have fallen on hard times recently in the run-up to Fall of X.
I’ll be blunt: I don’t think there’s a chance in hell that Marvel corporate would approve this being textual... but I’m willing to be proven wrong, I guess!
WHEW. Okay. That’s my list. This is nowhere near definitive of course - I didn’t discuss Shatterstar’s bisexuality, Deadpool’s pansexuality, Gwenpool’s aroace identity, et al - but also basically every X-Men character is either textually queer or could be justified as being queer based on comic book lore. This entire brand has a queer poly energy that even the straightest writers weren’t able to fully shake off of it... so, while this is my list, they could really do anything they wanted (and that Mickey Mouse lets them do, at least)... We’ll see what happens!
[PS: In light of the strike and the general shitty way that megacorporations in entertainment have been treating their workers for years now, I’d be remissed if I made this post and didn’t encourage people to consider donating to the Entertainment Community Fund as well!]

Day 1: Donatello + Mistletoe
Tumblr media
Summary: Donnie catches you under the mistletoe with him!
Warnings: None!
Note: Yes I did make that banner in Canva, I tried my best! 😅
You stood back on the top step on the lair's entrance marveling at your work with a victorious grin. Somehow, you'd managed to convince Splinter to let you throw the guys a Christmas party, and you couldn't be more pleased with yourself. Of course there was a very tight guest list, but that's to be expected when you the hosts are mutants who shouldn't exist. Casey and April would be arriving shortly, and everything was decorated, it was nearly time. And to think, you'd managed to keep it all a surprise, just between you, the humans, and the rat.
"Guys, c'mere!" you shouted with uncontained glee. One by one, all the turtles filed in, each filled with wonder at the state of the living room. "Merry Christmas!" You chirped, exchanging an excited grin with their father, who had come in with them. "Well, don't be strangers! I put on some carols, we got a hot chocolate bar, and I even picked out a few movies for us to watch!"
"Wait-" Mikey froze, his eyes darting to the kitchen island, practically drooling over the assortment of cookies, hot milk, chocolate and toppings. "We get to make our own hot chocolate?!"
"Well, duh!" you laughed, walking over to him.
"Oh my gosh," he gushed, rocking on his heels and barely containing his enthusiasm. "That's so boss! I've never made hot chocolate before! Hey, by the way, what's hot chocolate?" Your jaw dropped as you scanned the boys' faces, all of them showing signs of confusion.
"You guys..." you chuckled, taking a cup from the selection. "C'mere, I'll show you." You demonstrated the process of making the treat, dropping a ball of chocolate into your mug, before pouring boiling milk over it. To their awe, the shell of melted to reveal a brown dust that floated around atop the liquid. After mixing it, you dropped a handful of marshmallows into the drink, before topping it with whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles. After you finished, you took a sip, humming with delight, beofre wiping away a small milk mustache. "That's just how I do it, but you can do it how ever you want! It's better with milk than water, though."
You barely had the chance to move out of the way before the bar was ransacked by grabbing hands, a chorus of bickering to accompany. You giggled, shaking your head and heading to the sofa, just in time for Casey and April to arrive.
-----
"So you guys have never celebrated Christmas before?" the ginger asked curiously, sipping her coco.
"Not exactly," Leo answered, rubbing the back of his neck. "Not like this at least."
"Christmas is a little different in Japan," Donnie explained. "Master Splinter's culture is the only one we know. Plus it's hard to celebrate anything when you live in the sewers."
"We still get gifts though!" Mikey boasted, hoisting up his skateboard and pointing to a sticker on the bottom of it. "Master Splinter gave me this last year."
"It's more about spending time with family for us," Raph added with a playful smirk. "Now matter how much it hurts."
The conversation droned on, everyone sharing a bit of what the holiday meant to them, or how they normally celebrated. Eventually it shifted to traditions, and symbols and the stories behind them. "So all this stuff has a meaning to it?" the eldest turtle asked, glancing around the room. "Even the star on top of the tree?"
You hummed in response. "Mhm! It's supposed to symbolize the star of Bethlehem, from the story of the birth of Christ. It's a Christian thing, but I just think it looks pretty!"
"What about that little plant hanging from the doorway to the lab?" Raph asked, cocking a brow and tossing a thumb towards it.
"Oh, that's just mistletoe." you replied nonchalantly.
"Wait," Donnie objected, brows furrowing together. "Isn't mistletoe poisonous?"
"Only if you eat it," you snickered. "I strongly advise against eating any of the decorations though."
"What does it symbolize?" he asked, tilting his head as he looked down at you from his seat to your left.
"Peace and fertility, I think." you answered, tapping your chin to ensure you remembered correctly. "It originated in Greece. When two people get walk under it at the same time, their supposed to kiss and make peace with each other."
The terrapin's face heated as he imagined sharing his first kiss over such an occasion. "Seems like somebody's just dyin' to make peace with you, (Y/N)." Raph chided, nudging his younger brother's side. You simply laughed them off as they began to argue.
-----
You hummed softly to the carols that were playing on the radio as you bustled around the lair cleaning up after the party. All the attendees had retired to where ever it was they chose to rest, and Casey and April had gone home for the night. You decided to sleep over, claiming the couch as yours.
Suddenly, a soft voice made you jump as you dropped the dish you were washing. "Hey, (Y/N)?"
"Donnie," you recognized, before turning back to the sink. "Mind giving me a hand with the clean up? You guys really did a number on this kitchen."
His eyes fell downcast, before perking back up to look at you again. Maybe if he persisted, you'd notice. "Um, sure but first can you-"
"Don, sweetie, you're gonna have to speak up, I can't hear you over this water." you called from over your shoulder, wishing he'd just come to you and talk so you didn't have to yell.
"S-Sorry," he muttered, before clearing his throat and upped his volume by a few notches. He felt so embarrassed shouting the words he needed to say. "Uh, could you come over here for just a-"
Finally, your shoulders slumped with frustration, and you shut of the water, drying your hands on a towel. When you turned to face him. it took you a moment to process, and you, unfortunately needed it spelt out for you. "Um, (Y/N)? W-Would you come over here with me for just a minute?"
Your cheeks caught fire at the sight of him standing there timidly, patiently waiting for you to kiss him under the mistletoe. "D-Donnie... I-"
"Y-You don't have to," he stated, losing all his courage. "Sorry, this was a stupid idea, just forget about it."
"I'd love to..." you paused, deciding to rephrase, lest you let on to having the wrong idea. "Come over there with you..."
Your heart pounded in your head as you approached him, each step seemingly getting you no closer. Finally, you were standing directly in front of him, both of you sharing an awestruck expression. Suddenly, he cleared his throat, almost as if he had a reversed speech to recite. "Oh, look," he said nervously, his voice meek and barely there. "Looks like we're under the mistletoe..."
"Guess that means we gotta make peace then..." you trailed awkwardly.
"Guess so..." he replied, glancing around for anything he could use to buy him a little bit of time to calm down. "Guess we should-uh, k-kiss now?"
"Probably..." you encouraged, waiting less than patiently for your first kiss. Eventually, you sighed, shoulders dropping with the realization that he'd chickened out. And you couldn't be the one to initiate, since he was the one that invited you, it'd be weird! Right?
Donnie fought a war with himself, one part telling him to just buck up and go for it, and the other telling him it wasn't the right time, and that he'd made a fool of himself. When he finally glanced back at you and noticed the sadness in your eyes, and you body language queued that you were going to depart, he decided to go with the former.
"Aw screw it," he suddenly snapped, swiftly wrapping an arm around your waist, while his free hand came up to cup your cheek as he dipped you slightly, looming over you with the calmest expression. You were entranced by how suave he'd managed to become at the drop of a dime, staring up at him through half lidded eyes, lips parted and more than ready. With no more hesitation, his lips came down and claimed yours, holding that connection for a few moments.
To the both of you, it felt like hours could have ticked by in the span of just a few seconds. When you finally parted, you gasped, having forgotten about the need for air almost completely. As you collected your breath, you began to feel his touch leaving you, prompting you to leap forward and catch him in another kiss, this one much shorter.
"Sorry," you blushed, pulling back. "I've just been waiting for that for a while."
"Well, if I would've known, you wouldn't have." he chuckled, pulling you into his chest for an embrace. "Merry Christmas, (Y/N)."

Cartoon Idea: X-Men: The Next Mutation
I'm pretty sure most of you are familiar with the X-Men...
Tumblr media
Ever since their creation back in 1963 by legends Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, they've been a major cornerstone in the grand scheme of the Marvel Universe.
For about sixty years now, this merry band of mutants have drew in millions of readers from all over the world through their interesting characters, their colorful personalities and abilities, their engaging stories, and most importantly of all...their parallels towards the real world prejudice of minorities, being created with the intention to reflect the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.
It's honestly weird to think that there was a time when the X-Men were the premiere superhero team of Marvel, while the Avengers were mostly B or C-Listers.
Undoubtedly, the peak of the X-Men popularity was during the 1990s and 2000s. During that time, the X-Men would be launched more into the mainstream thanks to the success of the still acclaimed and beloved X-Men: The Animated Series, which ran on Fox Kids from 1992 to 1997.
Tumblr media
Along with that, the team had several appearances in video games such as Children of the Atom and Marvel vs. Capcom.
And of course, they had....
Tumblr media
In the 2000s, the team would make their jump to the big screen with the help of 20th Century Fox, and their films not only ended up being major successes, but also helped revived the superhero genre in film.
They would also have several video game adaptations and appearances, from the X-Men Legends duology to the Ultimate Alliance series.
Not to the mention that they would have two more animated series, one at the beginning of the decade and one at the end of the decade.
Those shows being X-Men Evolution, which ran on Kids WB from 2000 to 2003.
Tumblr media
And Wolverine and the X-Men, which ran throughout 2009 on the somehow still existing Nicktoons Network.
Tumblr media
Along with them still being popular and frequently used in the comics, the X-Men were on top of the world and nothing could stop them no-
youtube
So yeah.....in 2009, Marvel was bought out by the Walt Disney Company, giving them ownership of all their IPs, including the X-Men.
But besides that, the X-Men were perfectly fine. Still frequently appearing in the comics and Marvel media outside of it.
So in despite the purchase, things were overall still fine for the X-
youtube
So yeah in 2012, "The Avengers" came out, became a hit (both critically and financially), made the Marvel Cinematic Universe into a cinematic powerhouse, and launched the Avengers into mainstream popularity.
So in spite of all that, things were still pretty good for the X-Men....But the over the next few years, the cracks would start to show.
As ths MCU became more popular, Marvel became focusing on pushing the Avengers as their premiere superhero team, with the X-Men essentially being dethroned.
Along with that, their relevance in the comics notably began to degraded, and barely began making appearances in media outside the comics.
The reason for this, apart from Marvel focusing on cashing in on the Avengers, was because despite still owning the overall rights for the X-Men (which, why wouldn't they?), their film rights were still owned by 20th Century Fox..
Since Fox was pretty much a rival company to Marvel until Disney bought them out, Marvel basically saw any form of X-Men representation as free-marketing for Fox.
So they decided to essentially not to allow any X-Men related characters to appear in any media outside the comics and even reduced their overall presence as well.
This also happened to the Fantastic Four as well, since their film rights were also owned by Fox.
Though after that last movie, Marvel should've instantly gotten those rights back....
Tumblr media
However, the person who essentially responsible for all was none than.....
IKE PERLMUTTER!
youtube
Tumblr media
If you're a Marvel fan, there's a strong chance you know about Ike Perlmutter.
He's basically to Marvel fans (specifically X-Men) what Ken Penders is to Sonic fans.
This guy essentially helped keep Marvel from filing for bankruptcy in the late 1990s and has never did anything good for the company again.
Putting aside the fact that's notorious for being racist, misogynistic, homophobic, insanely cheap, and just being overall difficult to work it, Ike was essentially the one who led the anti-mutant crusade during the 2010s.
Since Marvel couldn't quite cash in on the X-Men as much the Avengers, combine with their film rights being owned by a rival company, Perlmutter made it his goal to remove the X-Men from any kind of media and even reduced their presence in the comics.
Not helping was Perlmutter infamously trying to replace the X-Men with the Inhumans.
Tumblr media
So yeah during the 2010s, the Inhumans got a notable representation boost, appearing in just about any form of Marvel media at the time (cartoons, video games, merchandising, etc).
While the Inhumans have made appearances prior to this, it more occasional if anything.
These appearances were much more common and happening rapidly.
That was all part of Perlmutter’s plan fo phase out the X-Men as much as possible and essentially have the Inhumans take their place. Along with that, it also served as promotion for then upcoming Inhumans tv show, which would’ve introduced the characters into the MCU.
Tumblr media
If you know the Inhumans tv show, you’d probably know how much of a massive failure it was.
It received negative reviews all across the board by the critics and audiences alike, and got abysmally low ratings, resulting in the show getting cancelled after just one season.
To this day, it still remains as MCU’s biggest flop and has virtually been retconned out of the franchise’s continuity.
The failure of the tv show, combined with Disney announcing that they would be buying out Fox not long after the show’s cancellation, essentially destroyed Perlmutter’s Inhuman plans, and the Inhumans haven’t played a major role in any form of Marvel media ever since.
But on the plus side, the X-Men were finally allowed to be used again.
Ever since 2019, they’ve seen a massive resurgence in the comics thanks to writer Johnathan Hickman.
They’ve appeared in video games like Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order and Midnight Suns.
And most importantly, they’ll be making their grand return to animation in the form of the upcoming X-Men ‘97, a continuation of X-Men: The Animated Series and the team’s very first show in over a decade, coming this Fall.
Tumblr media
And while it is cool to see the X-Men coming back in a major way after essentially having their existence pretty much ignored and downplayed for the better half of a decade, I do sort of wish it was in the form of a new take on the mutant team, rather than a continuation of an already existing iteration.
Well that’s why I’m here today! To share you with you all an idea I had for an all new X-Men cartoon that I like to call….
X-Men: The Next Mutation!
The best way I could describe this series is as a spiritual successor to Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Just like that series, it feature will an all-new take on the X-Men. Though they wouldn’t nearly as drastically changed. Along with that, the series will make the X-Men more powerful than most of their other iterations through secondary and tertiary mutations.
In the comics, from what I’ve read, additional mutations are rather rare, only happening to few mutants.
Essentially this series will be expanding on the concept of secondary mutations, as in this universe, they’re far more common among mutants, with most them often experiencing it during early adulthood.
Tertiary mutations, however, are a lot rarer, with only some mutants experiencing them in their lives.
The animation for this series would be done by Flying Bark Studios, the same studio that not only did the animation for Rise, but also other shows like Glitch Techs and Monkie Kid.
And I mean….are you guys telling me you wouldn’t want a Marvel cartoon with animation like this?!
youtube
As for the art-style, in contrast to the more realistic (and obviously MCU adjacent) style that Marvel’s previous cartoons had used during most of the 2010s, X-Men will have a far more stylized and exaggerated.
And for the artist of this series, I think Boris Grovez aka ArtFrenzyBoris would be perfect for the job.
His art-style isn’t like anything I’ve seen before. It looks like something right out of a comic book, but with a more exaggerated and somewhat cartoonish flair.
And to prove my point, here’s some X-Men related art he’s done.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Similar to Rise of the TMNT, the series will sport a more comedic, light-hearted tone than its previous iterations and be more episodic with some story arcs sprinkled about. I know some people are gonna have a problem with the first detail thanks to one particular show that I’m not gonna mention making people think that anything remotely comedic involving long-existing superheroes is automatically bad. But similar to Rise, despite being more light-hearted and comedy focused, it won’t shy away from dramatic or emotional moments. As for the latter, that won’t be problem since the 90s show and X-Men Evolution did the same thing as well.
Also, might be a bit controversial, but the way mutants are viewed in this universe is a bit more neutral than most iterations. While some of humanity still hates and fears them, others are actually fine and even like them. I’ve always liked it when the X-Men actually had human supporters (or at least humans who actually appreciate what they do), which most adaptations almost never really explore.
The series will also feature various romantic relationships. Some iconic, some rare, some that were set up but never explored, some popular with the fans, and even some that have never really been considered. Also, there will be no relationship drama (or at least drama that isn’t melodramatic or shit). Yes…that does mean you-know-what will be not featured in the series in any kind of way…..and I think we will all be better off for it.
As for the X-Men themselves, the roster of this series will consists Cyclops, Storm, Wolverine, Beast, Rogue, Gambit, Psylocke, Nightcrawler, Angel (who is a female in this universe), Emma Frost, Colossus, Iceman and Jubilee.
As for what they can do in this universe.....
.Cyclops-Thanks to his secondary mutation, Cyclops can now channel the energy of his concussive beams through his beam. Giving him greater physical strength and speed, and allowing him to shoot the beams from any part of his body (he mostly does it with his hands and feet). He can also alter size and density of his beams, allowing them to bounce off surfaces.
.Storm-Thanks to her secondary mutation, Storm can now transform into the elements of wind, water, electricity and ice. Not only giving her even greater control of the water, but also enhancing her physical abilities as well. Her elemental forms virtually make her invulnerable to harm and gives her a boost in some physical areas (like ice giving her superhuman strength and durability and wind and electricity giving her superhuman speed and agility).
.Wolverine-Thanks to his secondary mutation and some experimentation, Wolverine now possesses superhuman physicality and special berserker rage factor that greatly increases his physicality when entered. His healing factor is also even more powerful, being able to heal and recover from the most fatal of injuries.
.Beast-Thanks to his secondary mutation, Beast was given the hairy blue look we now him for today. Along with that, his already impressive superhuman physicality was greatly enhanced, he now has animalistic senses (similar to Wolverine, but not quite on that level), and a supersonic roar.
.Rogue-Thanks to her secondary mutation, Rogue can call upon the powers and abilities of those she has previously touched for a limited amount of time.
.Gambit-Thanks to his secondary mutation, Gambit can now uses his kinetic energy manipulation in different kinds of way. He can channel it throughout his body to give himself greater strength, speed and reflexes, and even create physical constructs like throwing cards and a staff.
.Psylocke-Thanks to her secondary mutation, Psylocke can now create various solid energy weapons that can do actual damage, enhance her physicality, and even create giant energy projections that do physical damage.
.Nightcrawler-Thanks to his secondary mutation, Nightcrawler can now manipulate darkness, using it to blend into the shadows and create physical constructs like swords.
.Angel-Thanks to her secondary mutation, Angel possesses superhuman physicality and is able to generate and manipulate light from her body, which also has a healing factor.
.Emma Frost-Thanks to her tertiary mutation, Emma can now combine her psionic powers and diamond form to create physical constructs of varying shapes and sizes.
.Colossus-Thanks to his secondary and tertiary mutation, Colossus can now morph his limbs into various shapes. He can also alter his body density and switch between a liquid steel and a flaming steel form.
.Iceman-Thanks to his secondary mutation, Iceman can now alter the temperature and even weather of his surroundings, and control the other elements associated with snow and ice, that being water and wind. He can also transform into whatever element he's controlling, making him virtually invulnerable to damage, just like Storm.
.Jubilee-Jubilee....sadly, hasn't gone through her secondary mutation yet.
Well that's all for now! I'll go into more details about the X-Men (their appearances, their backgrounds, their voice actors, etc), as well the other characters in their world, including their fellow mutants, their non-mutant allies, and villains (both mutant and non-mutant).
Let me know what you guys think and if you could, send me some ideas on elements I should implement into this show.

1980 ad for the Star Heroes Pocket Book from Marvel UK. This was a black and white digest sized reprint of US strips. This particular title ran for 28 issues but was renamed The X-Men Pocket Book early in its run after it started to reprint the Lee/Kirby run on Marvel's Merry Mutants.

We need to talk about X-Men '97!
October 31st, 1992, saw the release of the iconic X-Men animated series. It quickly gained praise and viewership from its audience. For years, it has been regarded as one of the most high-quality animated adaptations.
This year, the X-Men Animated Series finally gains a sequel; X-Men '97. The next chapter in Marvel's Uncanny Mutants is only halfway through its season. Its journey is only just beginning, and it has already gained praise from critics.
Welcome to the House of Milesverse. Today, we will be talking about X-Men '97, and its growing impact. I hope you enjoy the read and remember to (SNIKT) leave a comment or suggestion, bub.
WARNING. THERE WILL BE SPOILERS.
'97's story:
Tumblr media
Unsurprising to anyone, '97 picks up a year after the events of the last episode. With Charles Xavier gone, Cyclops has taken full reins over the team. The X-Men are facing off against new and dangerous challenges.
'97 has a timeless vibe to its story, almost as if you never left. These are still the same characters as they were before. The X-Men's lore and story within the animated continuity have not changed.
Much like its predecessor, '97 also provides some interesting adaptations. For an example, look no further than Madelyne Pryor, the clone of Jean Grey. In just one episode, the series condensed the events of her story.
Another good example is their destruction of Genosha. Watching it play out on the screen was such a shocker. Its destruction was carried out by Cassandra Nova in the comics. Interestingly enough, she's completely absent from the series, with this being a conspiracy done by Bolivar Trask.
The X-Men have been missed.
Tumblr media
Dear X-Men, we have missed you.
X-Men's animated series is in line with other serious, action-heavy stories from that time. Their story focuses on the message of hate, and the real-world issues it can relate to. The persecution that mutants feel has often been used to represent various minority groups across history.
In addition, the original series combined that with beautifully made animation. The action scenes have been well-remembered by fans for years. The animated series has become such a beloved part of the animated media circle within comic books. For anyone who's a fan of our merry mutants, they definitely have spent some time with this show.
97 has proven to be a perfect follow-up by many fans. In just two episodes, 97 was able to impress the audience. It's following in the footsteps of its predecessor. X-Men 97's acclaim and interest can only rise, especially thanks to it's renewal.
What's so different?
Tumblr media
These may be the same mutants you have met, but their voices are not. Some of the actors, such as Norm Spencer (the original voice for Cyclops) unfortunately passed away over the years. Others have been recast to play different characters.
Here are what I feel are the most notable additions:
Cyclops is now voiced by Ray Chase, well known for being the voice of numerous characters such as Noctis Lucis Caelum (FF15), Bruno Bucciarati (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure), Tengen Uzui (Demon Slayer), Roy (Fire Emblem), and the Master of Masters (Kingdom Hearts)
Jean Grey (and Madelyne Pryor) is now voiced by Jennifer Hale, well known for being the voice of Commander Shepherd (Mass Effect), Princess Morbucks (Powerpuff Girls), and one of the Hex Girls, Thorn (Scooby-Doo). It's also worth noting that Jennifer Hale reprises the role, as she initially had it during Wolverine and the X-Men.
Gambit is an interesting case, as his prior voice actor, Chris Potter, is now playing Cable. He's instead voiced by A.J. LoCascio, who does voice work for both Prince Lotor (Voltron: Legendary Defender) and Marty McFly (Back To The Future: The Game).
Speaking of? Cable is voiced by Chris Potter now, whose done work as Peter Caine (Kung-Fu: The Legend Continues), and Evan Owen (The Young and The Restless).
Cable's old voice actor was Lawrence Bayne, but he was replaced by Chris Potter. Ironically enough, Lawrence Bayne plays a new character who debuts in the same episode as Cable's birth, The X-Cutioner. Lawrence Bayne is known as the voice of Gill (Street Fighter III: Third Strike) and Raven (Gargoyles).
Lastly? Jubilee's old voice actress, Alyson Court, wanted someone of Asian descent to portray her. That is where Holly Chou comes in, acting as the new voice of Jubilee. She did the voice work for Akame (Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name). It is also worth noting that Alyson Court acted as the voice of an older Jubilee in an episode, named Abscissa.
As you can see, a lot has changed with the voice cast of the X-Men series. Some characters who were voiced by older actors had been replaced. Others, like Cal Dodd (The voice of Wolverine) and Alison-Sealy Smith (The voice of Storm) still reprise their iconic roles.
While much has changed? At the end of the day, these new actors all still portray the spirit of the character. Ray Chase for example makes for a standout, with how closely he sounds to Norm Spencer's Cyclops.
What to look forward to & Conclusion
Tumblr media
X-Men '97 is heating up, and we are already almost at the end. If you haven't checked it out yet, then I recommend it. The series is short, but its episodes all have a distinct impact and role. They not only move the plot forward but also help the characters to grow.
My hope is that Superhero Animation swings back into full gear. I remember as a kid it felt like it was practically already there. From the 90s to the 2000s, you could not miss it. The DC Animated Universe, for example, stands out as one of the best superhero animation projects. An entire generation grew up on those stories, and those adventures.
X-Men shows that its importance and value to people matters. Much like the DCAU, it raised so many children and was their first introduction to the X-Men. It stands out as one of the most iconic superhero action cartoons ever, and frankly? It's earned its title.
I think the future of superhero animation is steadily climbing back up. We have had great animated series, such as Invincible, Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur, My Adventures with Superman, and now? X-Men '97.
This has been a wonderful episode of House of MilesVerse. I hope you join us for a deep dive into our favorite robots in disguise. I'll be doing a full review of Transformers: Earthspark.
And? If you didn't know it, then now you know. We'll chronicle some adventures of Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur.

Remember Ms. Marvel? She's back! In X-Men Form. A new series co-written by her MCU actress Iman Vellani will put Kamala Khan among the ranks of Marvel's Merry Mutants for the very first time.
