The #MaseratiIndy was bold and brash where previous four-seat Masers had been subdued and sublime. But then, if you were aiming at the Lamborghini Espada, you’d swing for the fences too. Ferruccio Lamborghini’s company was started to one-up Enzo Ferrari, but the first Lambos, the 350 and 400GT, were aimed just as much at Maserati. The Trident responded, slowly at first. It’s Quattroporte stood alone and it had two rather nice four-seaters, the aging 6-cylinder Sebring, descended from the 50s 3500GT, and the new but conservative V8 Mexico. When the Espada broke cover in early 1968, an emergency program began to replace the Sebring with a four-seat derivative of the exciting V8 Ghibli. This car became the Indy in 1969. When Lamborghini created the Espada, it drew inspiration from a pair of Bertone style exercises, Marcello Gandini’s Marzal and Pirana. Maserati, with less loyalty to a single style house, shopped around too. Ghia and Vignale both competed for the car, with Ghia’s entry being the Simun concept car, styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro. Giugiaro had created the gorgeous Ghibli only two years earlier, but was soon to depart Ghia. Vignale’s design boss Virginio Vairo took a personal interest, and his winning entry was his own work, with help from his right hand Elio Mainardi. Vairo had also designed the Mexico, the rather formal-looking successor to the very exotic 5000GT. Both ideas were shown at the 1968 Turin show, six months after the Espada dropped. In the end the Indy had some of the Simun’s elements too, but Vairo’s ideas can also be seen in his later Fiat Samantha and his contemporary proposal for a redesigned Matra M530. The hardware for the Indy largely came from the Ghibli, but it was a conventional unibody where the Ghibli was a tube-frame design. The basic Maser four-cam V8 continued, and in the Indy would get 4.2, 4.7, and 4.9L versions, though they ran a wet sump, saving money and complexity from the Ghibli. The name celebrated the trident’s then long-ago Indy 500 wins, a not-so-subtle reminder that Maserati had actual racing pedigree while Lamborghini didn’t.
