The presence of art in the Bijlmer is changing – more and more artists are finding their way to this side of the city, and in the coming years their numbers will certainly continue to swell. Extensive new housing construction projects will be completed in the near future and, to make space for them, old office buildings will have to be cleared. For a while, before these buildings are finally demolished, they will be temporarily vacant. These temporary spaces are precisely the places where new opportunities for artists will open up and this will stimulate continued expansion of the cultural ecosystem. In this edition of Local Heroes, six artists who have their studios in Amsterdam Southeast will present their work. We found three types of clay sold on the Siab market in Samarkand, which were described by the sellers as salty (grey), fat (brown) and neutral (yellow). According to the sellers local clay came from around Samarkand, salty from Tashkent and fat from the east of the country. Everyone recommended salty and fat clay to us.
