Part 35
Summary: Now married, Spencer & Y/N navigate the D/s lifestyle. How will their relationship change?
Words: 1,501
Warnings: Implication of smut at the end.
A/N: The last chapter of these two! I really hope you’ve enjoyed as much as I have.
After stepping out of the shower, you wrap a towel around yourself and scamper across the hallway. Spencer’s feeding the babies and preparing Charlotte’s breakfast before your day out.
On the bed lay your red cotton panties and wireless bra. With all the running around you’re going to be doing today, he wants you to be comfortable. You bite your lip and slip them on before stepping into the slightly ripped, black jeans he picked out. Completing the ensemble is an old t-shirt of his, a Metallica shirt that he’s had since he was in his 20s and he refuses to get rid of. He loves seeing you in his clothes.
Once your outfit is complete, you go back to the bathroom to dry your hair and put it up in a messy bun the way he instructed. “How are my babies doing this morning?” You ask, heading outside. Charlie is eating some cereal and milk and getting most of it on her pajamas. Thankfully, Spencer thinks two steps ahead and hasn’t gotten her dressed yet, knowing she’d get messy.
“Good, mommy,” Charlie says, wiping milk away with a napkin to her right. She’s starting to say an L sound rather than a W. She’s been practicing. “Morgan and Bllll-akey are messy.”
Pot meet kettle.
As soon as Charlie is finished eating, she drags you inside to help her pick out an outfit while Spencer changes diapers and picks out some outfits for the babies. It’s going to be an exhausting but fun-filled day. In addition to Ai and Kyle joining you later in the day, you’re getting together with the entire BAU for a picnic.
---
On the way to the park, Charlie practically bounces in anticipation in her car seat. Morgan and Blake are content at the same time, which is a miracle and a blessing all in one. “Guess, who’s here Charlie?”
“Auntie Em and JJ and Penny and Tara!”
“Who else?” Spencer asks, glancing toward the wooden tables. Everyone’s brought food, save for you and Spencer. They all told you to take it easy. “Who else do you see?”
“Unc-le David and Matt and Luke and Aaron! And my cousins!”
“Everyone’s here!” He says, slapping his hands to the sides of his face like Edvard Munch’s ‘The Scream.’
As soon as you park the car, Spencer gets out to undo Charlotte’s seatbelt. She darts toward her seemingly never-ending group of aunts and uncles and cousins. She’s got all the love in the world. Grabbing Morgan and Blake in their carriers, you walk toward the rest of the group, embracing all in tired hugs. You jokingly fall asleep on Penelope’s shoulder. “How are all my little angels?” She says, grazing her finger against Blake’s cheek. “You tiring mommy and daddy out?”
“God, yes,” Spencer laughs, pulling her in for a hug before looking toward her right where Luke stood. “You’re treating her right, right?”
“Always,” he says, kissing Penelope’s temple.
Everyone starts to mingle and the twins get passed around from aunt to uncle and uncle to aunt. Even Jack, who Spencer just realizes in horror is now a teenager, takes a turn holding the babies. “You’re a teenager!” He says.
“Yea, Uncle Spencer. Time flies, huh?”
“You were this big two seconds ago!” He screams, sending everyone around you into a fit of laughter.
Aaron steps out from behind you with cold beers in hand for you. “Think of how I feel. I’m ancient.”
“You?” Rossi laughs. “I’m Methuselah! You’re all fetuses.”
Charlotte runs around with Matt’s brood of babies and Michael on the playground, while Henry and Jack hang around with the adults. Occasionally, the younger kids pull them in to play, and none of the adults are safe either. At one time or another everyone, Emily, JJ, Will, Penelope, Luke, Tara, Matt, Kristy, Aaron, David, Krystal, you name it, the kids insist they play.
Although it doesn’t seem like anyone is having an awful time. David in his glory as the doting grandpa, wrangling all the kids and chasing them around with the rest of the team while you, Spencer, Matt, Kristy, JJ and Will just relax at the park benches. “So how are you guys doing?” Will drawls, a knowing smile upon his face. “How’re three babies treating you?”
“So tired,” you say, sprawling out over Spencer’s lap. He playfully grabs your butt and you wiggle. “Happy, but sleepy.” You point toward Matt and Kristy in awe. “How do you do it? Five babies.”
“You just do it. What? You and Spencer aren’t going for your own soccer team too?”
Spencer shakes his head. “I don’t know if we can handle it. Three is downright exhausting.”
“Never say never,” you laugh.
“Oh, really?” His eyes light up. You love seeing that light, knowing you and your family together put it there. “Maybe one more. We’ll see.”
“Play it by ear,” you reply. “Definitely not for a little while though. What about you Matt? JJ? Are we planning on adding any more to the BAU bundle?”
JJ holds her finger to lip before pointing toward her stomach.
“No!” Spencer whispers. “Really?”
“Really. Last one though. Three is enough.”
After all Spencer and the team had been through together, it was wonderful to see them so relaxed, getting the life they deserved. While the team plays with the kids, you set up all the food they brought. It all looks delicious. Cakes, cookies, chips, side salads, burgers and hot dogs, which you’ll cook on the portable grill Rossi brought with him.
“Hey, Rossi!” Spencer calls. “You’ve got a lot of grilling to do. Come on over.”
As Rossi runs over, Air and Kyle pull up and get out of the car, surveilling all the people on the playground. “Are these all you two?” Kyle laughs, shaking Spencer’s hand.
“Yea, let me introduce you.” One by one, Spencer introduces his former teammates, their spouses, their kids. “This is my work family. The ones holding Blake and Morgan are Emily Prentiss and Tara Lewis. Everyone these are the twins’ birth parents, Ai and Kyle.”
Of course, they’re welcomed with open arms and all the aunts and uncles assure Ai and Kyle that they’re so loved here. “We can tell,” Ai says softly. “It was hard giving them up. But we wouldn’t have chosen any differently. We love being able to see them.”
Emily and Tara passed the babies along to Ai and Kyle. “You two are getting so big!”
Before you know it, day turns to night, street lights illuminating the playground where all the kids are finally starting to lose some steam. Ai and Kyle give the babies some kisses before heading off to eat, take a nap and then study all night long. “Thank you,” Ai says. “We’ll never be able to thank you enough.”
You press your hand to the side of her cheek, Blake sitting comfortably on your hip. “You don’t have to thank us.”
Once they’re off, the rest of the BAU leaves one by one, hugs and kisses all around until it’s only you, Spencer, Luke and Penelope left. “You two need any help getting home?” Luke asks.
Spencer shakes his head, eyes closed and practically asleep on two feet. “Us? No way. We’re experts now.”
“Stop growing, okay?” Penelope calls back as they walk toward their car. “You’re all getting too big.”
“Think of how I feel!” You laugh. Looking down to where the babies lay in their carriers, to where Charlotte ambles alongside her father, clutching on to her daddy’s pant leg, you smile to yourself. Almost immediately after Spencer puts Charlotte in her car seat, she falls asleep, the babies having passed out long before. “You have a fun day?”
Nodding, Spencer leans toward you, pressing a soft kiss to your lips. “Yea, I did. I’m tired. But there’s no one else I’d rather be tired with.”
“Same,” you whisper. “Wanna get the babies in bed and cuddle on the couch?”
“Sounds heavenly.”
---
At home, Morgan and Blake do little but squirm as you change their diapers and slip them into their pajamas. You sing a sweet melody as they stir before passing out again. As you approach Charlotte’s room, you hear Spencer reading to her. Even though she’s barely awake, she insists on being read to every night. “Goodnight, my little flower,” he whispers, pushing himself carefully up from the bed, ensuring he doesn’t wake her.
“Sweet dreams, Charlie.”
Leaning into Spencer, you both shuffle toward the couch and collapse into a heap of exhausted laughter. He pulls you to his side and starts to run his fingers through your hair. “How are you doing?” He asks, pressing his lips to your forehead. “Comfortable?”
“In our dynamic? Yea, absolutely. I think we’ve found a good balance.” Through babies, marriage, everything. “I love you so much.”
Spencer whispers, lazily tugging you onto his lap and smiling against your neck. “I love you more. No matter what, okay?”
“No matter what.”

What would you say is your favorite food? Sushi. < Ahhh, this is a good one. My favorite is down to a tie: it’s either chicken curry or burgers.
What color eyes does the person you like / love have? Are they pretty? Dark brown. I’m not too sure what the second question is referring to but yeah, she and her eyes are both pretty.
What was the first television show you were obsessed with? Hi-5, omg. That show was my life in preschool and I always watched the 12 NN replay as soon as I got back home from school, back when I was still on a half-day sched. I was so hooked I remember having legit tantrums before starting Grade 1 because grade school meant full days in school and thus having to miss out on the show entirely.
Do you like Mexican food or any other foreign foods? For sure. All my favorites are Asian (Indian, Japanese, Indonesian, Chinese, etc.) but I also enjoy Italian, Mexican, Greek etc cuisines. I generally haven’t tried African cuisines but I really, really want to.
What color is the keyboard you are currently using? The keys are black with white lettering.
Do you own any of those ‘chunky’ and cute rings? Nope, not my style.
What are you planning on eating for dinner tonight if you haven’t already? I saw my dad cooking up something deep-fried; it was like his own version of katsu or something, or maybe it’s fish fillet? I’m not too sure what it is yet but I’m excited and will probably eat lots of it as I skipped all my meals and have only been running on coffee and vape all day - not good.
Do you own an iPod or MP3 player? If so, when did you get it? Technically I still do. Haven’t used it since high school. I got it when I was 10 back in ‘08; I was envious of the kids in school who had iPods, so I asked my dad to buy me one even though I wasn’t super into music at the time. Not the best kid in the world.
When was the last time someone took your picture? Last Saturday when my package came. Apparently online deliveries now require your photo to be taken upon receiving your package and I think it’s for the seller to keep track of their transactions. I’m not a big fan of the new procedure, but it’s whatevs.
Would you rather write a report or type it on a computer? Type.
What color was the last jacket or hoodie you wore? Gray.
Do you receive more compliments or insults on a daily basis? Neither, really. I haven’t been talking to people a lot; and when I do it’s for work, where I receive neither compliments nor insults.
Who is the lead actress / actor from your absolute favorite movie? Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney, or Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.
Can you recite the alphabet backward? [continued from last night] Slowly, but I’m sure I can finish it.
Do you eat chili when you get a hotdog, or do you like it plain? We don’t do hotdogs with chili here. I generally don’t see chili much where I live and I wouldn’t call it a common dish.
Would you say it’s easy for people to make you smile or laugh? At first I thought it was, but I’m slowly realizing that it isn’t.
What would you say is your favorite cereal, if you even like it? Cookie Crisp is the only one I like. I don’t have cereal often.
When was the last time you went on vacation? Where was it? It was a quick weekend getaway to Tagaytay and then Cavite, if it counts.
How many states have you been to in your lifetime? Zero.
Do you and your friends normally say you love one another? Yep, especially with Andi and Angela.
Have you ever been an outcast at your school or anywhere else? I was definitely one in early grade school, and again in Grade 6 when both my closest friends migrated in a span of six months, and I spent nearly all my lunch periods alone. Looking back on it, I’m really glad I powered through and made it here because I truly wasn’t happy at the time.
Do you own any dresses? If so, what colors are they? I have lots of sundresses and little black dresses because I was into those for a very long time at one point. Some of them are black, obviously, but I also have dresses in blue, maroon, and olive.
Would you say you drink more pop / soda than you should? I never drink soda as I’ve always felt like I spend more time complaining about how drinking it feels like burning my tongue and throat than actually enjoying it.
Would you rather have orange juice or milk with your breakfast? Water.
How many different colors has your bedroom been painted? Just one. The walls have been white ever since we moved here 12 years ago.
Do you cuss? If so, do you ever cuss in front of your parents? I’ll slip in front of them sometimes but I never get in trouble for it anymore.
Would you ever tell your mom about the things you’ve done sexually? Our humor together can be raunchy sometimes but I don’t think I’d ever do this. I dunno if she wants to hear I’ve had sex with a girl either.
Is there anyone out there who can make you cry very easily? Yes.
What was the worst news you’ve heard this entire week? *In the last week, hearing about the typhoon’s effects in other cities didn’t feel good. This entire country is literally only getting by with donations from the private sector because the government isn’t doing shit for cities and families who got severely affected by the typhoon; it’s almost depressing to hear and read about.
Have you ever been in a car wreck? I’ve been in minor car accidents but it would be too much to call any of them car wrecks. They had all just been tiny bumps or thuds.
Do you have your ears pierced? If not, what do you have pierced? Yes, my mom had my earlobes pierced when I was an infant. I don’t plan on getting any more new ones as I’m not really into piercings.
Has anyone ever told you that they think you have ADHD? Nope.
What is your biggest pet peeve? When people reach out first via text/IM then even if I get back to them in 5–10 seconds, it takes them a long time to get back to me. It’s especially annoying if they classify it as urgent, I drop everything to reply quickly, then they end up disappearing. Like why?
Do a lot of people understand you completely? Who does exactly? No, I like keeping a wall up.
Would you say you’re really good at cooking and baking things? Haha no. But it’s something I want to be skilled in, definitely. I’d love to be able to make the food I usually just thirst over on the internet. I’m taking baby steps, like figuring out how to make certain sandwiches, but I have a long way to go before I can consider myself any good.
How is the weather outside right this second? It’s been a little cloudy this morning but it might start to get fair seeing how I’m beginning to see the sky turn blue. I’m just hoping there won’t be too much sun, period.
Do you have a lot of trees around your house? What about buildings? No buildings as I live in a gated village. We have a number of trees around, but I wouldn’t call it ‘a lot.’
Would you say either one of your parents are 'pack-rats?’ No. I have that title, and I believe I inherited it from my great-grandmother who was a bit of a pack rat herself, as I’ve been told.
Have you ever disowned anyone in your family? For what reasons? Kinda. I don’t associate with one of my uncles because he has a terrible drinking issue that he never got to permanently fix. Whenever I see him at family gatherings he just smells like stale gin or whatever it is he drinks, and it just ruins the essence of family reunions for me. As recent as Christmas Day last year he drove drunk and crashed into a car with an entire family, but as always his ass got lucky because 1) no one in the family got hurt, and 2) said family let go of the lawsuit they were planning to file against him.
Have you ever seen That 70’s Show? Do you watch it regularly? I tried watching the first episode but genuinely could not find it entertaining for the life of me. Sorry, Mila :(
If you could choose, what decade would you rather live in? I never really think about revisiting decades - they’re already behind, so what’s the point? As bad as the 2020s have been looking, I’m okay with staying here.
How often would you say you get sick? Once a year at most.
Is there anyone out there who has hurt you so much, you wish they’d die? I used to wish they would die, but I don’t feel that way anymore.
Has anyone ever called you a socio-path before? I don’t think so.
When was the last time you watched a movie in theaters? December.
Have you ever moved to a completely different state before? We’ve moved to different regions before.
Do you mind it when surveys ask you really personal questions? No. Isn’t that part of the point of surveys?
When was the last time you told someone you love them? Thursday or Friday I think, when Andi said it to me first and I said it back. I wasn’t having a good day and they were just looking out.
Which one would you like more: kiss on cheek / kiss on neck? Depends on my mood. Right now a kiss on the cheek sounds nice.
Does it bother you when people steal your stuff on MySpace? This never happened to me because I had Myspace for such a short time and I never caught it at its peak. Also, how do people steal your stuff over there? That’s pretty intriguing lmao
Do you have freckles? Do you like / dislike them? I don’t have any.
Who would you say is the best actor / or actress in your opinion? My biased ass would rally for Kate Winslet all the way, but some other great ones for me are Toni Collette, Emma Stone, Jodie Foster, and Natalie Portman.
How many times have you been drunk in your life? Many.
What would you do if the last person you kissed said they hated you? Be confused and ask them to give me a few concrete reasons. I don’t think too highly of myself, but I know I’ve never done anything to make me deserving of hate, especially with regard to us.
Do you ever think you might be pregnant? No, it has never been a worry of mine.
When was the last time you acted really immature? The weekend.
Do you enjoy watching comedies or horror movies more? Horror. I never watch comedies and the only subtype of it that I watch is romcom.
As a child, did you ever have an imaginary friend? Yeah but it lasted all of five minutes until I got bored with the concept.
Does anyone call you baby? Who would that be? No.
Can you rely on one or more people to take up for you? I have no idea what take up means. If this also means ‘stand up for me,’ then yeah I can.

GBBO 2020 reactions episode 2 because I need a place to dump my thoughts.
Oh great, we’re starting off with Paul expressing an opinion. Does this mean that he’s gonna punish people for not reading his mind and using milk chocolate.
NOEL STOP MAKING FUN OF SURA FOR THE MISTAKE LAST TIME. At least he seems to crack her up eventually.
Is Mark using white chocolate? I’m afraid for him... oh is he also the big nuts comment from the intro? ohhh...okayyyyyyy
Mangos yess! I support this competition!
Mak is what peak performance looks like, clearly. He’s such an uncle I can’t even. omg him saying he hasn’t decorated them though. And he’s not measuring precisely...I’m a little scared but also same, Mak, same.
Quarantine florentines that’s so cute, love it Lottie. A uniform mess, sounds like my life.
The bakers are on the floor again, gazing into their ovens.
I wish Paul wouldn’t mill about the tent. He’s like a predator prowling and making them all nervous.
I’m nervous for Rowan’s this round...
Oh no...Mak is also using white chocolate.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh they’re tempering. Good luck to all of them. I’m worried for Hermine.
What’s...ruby chocolate? It sounds like flavored white chocolate?
Mak’s chocolate has seized!!!!!! Ack! this is what happens when you don’t practice your decoration! When you put random stuff in chocolate! That makes me anxious.
And see...they do seem to be knocking non-dark chocolate florentines.
I love Rowan and his boldness, just saying I’m gonna do it because I want to lol.
Sura and Peter both came up with stuff that was a bit softer...and yet the judges liked them...hmmm...maybe your florentine standards leave something to be desired Prue and Paul.
Hamish did well! We Love to See It! And LOTTIE although Paul really? handshake? He totally has an ego about it.
Macaroooooooooon technical! Are macaroons more popular in the US or something? I feel like I’ve had them more recently than most of those bakers said they had. Never had a filled one though? Normally they’re undecorated coconutty lumps.
ROWAN DRINKING A CUP OF TEA WHILE CALMLY STIRRING HIS CURD that’s excellent, top notch. I love unflappable contestants.
LOL overjoyed that Noel got to call Paul out for his sausage fingies.
Mak. I too have drunk straight condensed milk. It is a beautiful thing. And the show’s super focus on Mark’s being behind is making me very nervous. I trust Mak’s knowledge? He seemed confident when he said low and slow. Do I give in and google?
Peter...took his out when they were PASTY WHITE! That is terrifying. Right now I only trust Dave, Mak, and maybe...maybe Mark.
Rowan is lovely, even when he is a hot mess. French patisserie, even when they’re messy.
lksdfjhalksjhdf it is so unfortunate I feel like most of their cookies are going to be underbaked and it makes me sad for them :’(.
Mark did well!!!!!!!! I’M GLAD! Also did I hear someone exclaim Matt in the background right at the end of his judging??? lol. And Mak did well too? Seems like...I was right to trust those three on the bake time.
oh NO! Rowan at the bottom :’( Well-deserved win for Dave though!!!
a...3D biscuit...table setting...from a meal you once had? What? Are the showstoppers this year? They couldn’t just leave it at 3D biscuit sculpture like they usually do?
Paul. Prue. Unless you’ve done this yourself I don’t want to hear you talk about why you want them to do this. Especially not PAUL.
Oh no...Rowan. I love him and I hope he gets most of this done. I don’t believe he’ll be able to do it all though.
How often does Mark go to Ethiopia that he can say “Every time I’m in Ethiopia”. Also YES LOTTIE VIKINGS.
Ahhh I hope Mak can do this. I hope Paul won’t judge him for his technique. It’s not very *Paul’s waving hands in his description of what he expects*. Hamish’s look a little simple and I’m worried for him.
Linda!!!! Rosewater shortbread!!! That is....brave... and Mak moulding as he goes seems...courageous. I feel like he’s gonna get slammed.
GAH these unmouldings! Breaking biscuits everywhere!
Knowing that Japan Week is a thing that happens later in a hellish move by the showrunners, the fact that Hermine did a japanese tea set is amusing to me.
I think...they’ll send Rowan home. Which is unfortunate. I like him. Good to see Hamish doing well! Simple but well-executed! Hot DAMN Linda’s turned out good. Unfortunate that the biscuits turned out overworked.
Ok...I think based off of their comments Dave is a likely choice for Star Baker. I think Mak is a little too worried, considering he came in third for the technical (that’s code for if they send him home this week I’m cutting a bitch).
WHAT THE FUCK! WHAT THE FUCK! WHAT THE FUCK! WHAT THE FUCK!
UNCLEJI NO! NO! NOT FAIR! NOT FAIR NOT ALLOWED!
Prue and Paul are fucking banned.

Denver Shenanigans
I was going to do a whole write-up of my trip to Denver but, honestly, it would end up being huge.
I’ve posted about my adventures on the ice at Pepsi Center, about meeting Tyson and Gabe, and embarrassing myself in front of Colin.
Here’s some other highlights.
We saw Marc Moser very briefly behind the bench before warmups at the first game we went to. One of my friends, who is local, mentioned I was over from the UK and like some sort of mystical Avs Santa Moser pulled a pop socket and pin out of his pocket and passed them to me. We couldn’t hear each other through the glass so we mostly communicated by mouthing words and using hand gestures but he asked me how I was enjoying my trip and I told him it was great.
Tumblr media
Big Z caught me taking a photo of him during warmups.
Tumblr media
Kerfy got out of his car to pose for a photo with a little kid and then stayed out for everyone else. We’re laughing here because we both got distracted by something someone else was doing and forgot we were supposed to be looking at the camera. Also, he’s very warm. Like I’ve got about 4 layers on here and I could still feel how warm he was when he put his arm around me for the photo.
Tumblr media
Long Beach Native Matt Nieto is the sweetest guy. He took the time to read the poster I was getting everyone to sign and asked me how I was enjoying my first visit to Denver.
Tumblr media
Barbs was also really sweet. He asked me if we had a hockey league back at home and we talked about that a bit. He was disappointed to hear that my city doesn’t have any sort of well known soccer team.
Tumblr media
We did a tour of Pepsi Center while the Canes were practicing. Dougie Hamilton photobombed us.
Tumblr media
We ran into Lauren Gardner and Conor McGahey during the tour and they are absolutely the nicest people. Even though I’m sure they had places to be they stopped and chatted to us for a good 10 minutes. Lauren called me Red, hugged us all multiple times and told us to come up and see her before the game that evening. Conor is a total nerd (and I say that with love as a fellow nerd). We talked about comics and playing musical instruments (he plays sax). He always says hi to me on the radio when I tweet to say I’m listening and I got to thank him for that. Also, if you think his voice sounds good on the radio that’s NOTHING to what it sounds like in person. So rich and smooth. I could have listened to him talk all day.
I joked that I was milking how far I’d traveled and that every sign I was making was going to mention that I’m from the UK. Lauren said she’d try and get our signs on TV. Haven’t actually watched any of the games we were at to see if that happened yet.
I was really hoping to meet them both and was considering tweeting them to ask before this happened. Lauren is such an inspiration for women wanting to get into sport broadcasting. She really knows her stuff and is smart, warm and kind. I’m so sad she’s leaving Altitude but I know she’s going to do great things. And I got to tell her how much I love listening to her on the podcast. There’s always something missing when she’s not able to make it and one of the other guys fills in.
They insisted on taking a photo with us before they left and then debated whether we should stand in front of the goal or in front of the Zamboni.
Tumblr media
We got to see where Coach Bednar does all his press stuff
Tumblr media
And where Lauren does all the intermission interviews
Tumblr media
We went shopping before the game and I came away with a ton of stuff including this amazing tshirt. Technically it’s a youth shirt but one of the perks of being short is that youth stuff fits me.
Tumblr media
As requested we went up to see Lauren before the game and she gave me a high five for getting a puck from Tyson. You could tell she’s feeling really emotional about leaving and she gave us all more hugs and said she was going to miss everyone.
The lights are super bright for the cameras so we all look really washed out while Lauren in her stage makeup looks flawless
Tumblr media
Our signs made it onto the Avs Twitter and look at this perfect timing of Tyson skating right in front of my sign.
Tumblr media
The next day we went to Sobo which is the liquor store Mark Rycroft owns. We wanted to buy some gifts for friends/family and he was super nice. He walked us around, gave us recommendations based on our budget and insisted on getting a photo with us before we left. He was so excited that our group was from all over.
Tumblr media
It’s pretty common knowledge that Tyson Barrie loves Dairy Queen and when I mentioned we don’t have it in the UK the rest of the group decided we must go there. So here I am having my first ever Blizzard (cookie dough). It was pretty good.
Tumblr media
For our third game we all made signs for Gabe and wore Landeskog jerseys to show that we miss him. We all ended up on the jumbotron which was kind of cool (I clearly do not know how to draw the # symbol).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I survived Colin Wilson staring right at me while wearing a backwards hat
Tumblr media
Also, EJ looking like he’s about to murder me
Tumblr media
During one of the intermissions we met Bernie which was super fun.
Tumblr media
At the end of our final trip to practice I had a pretty decent collection of signatures on my poster. I’ve now bought a frame for it and I’m going to hang it over my desk in my bedroom. I appreciate Colin and Tyson signing next to each other even though I met them on different days. My two faves together.
Tumblr media
I love that for our last game we all inadvertently ended up wearing jerseys with different players’ names on. We have a broad selection of faves.
Tumblr media
Once the game was over and it was starting to hit me that I was leaving the next morning things took a turn for the amazing. The other #DenverShenanigans girls had been plotting and snuck off and bought me a game used Colin Wilson stick for my birthday. This whole trip was technically a birthday present for myself (I turn 40 in September but there’s no hockey in September). I honestly had no idea they’d been planning this and pretty much started crying in the middle of the bar at Pepsi Center. I’m so lucky to know such wonderful people.
Tumblr media
And then @some-say-this-is-a-blog made me a beautiful quilt in Avs colours. I honestly don’t know what I did to deserve such amazing friends.
Tumblr media
And that concludes my Denver Shenanigans. Honestly, Denver is one of the most friendly places I’ve ever been to. Even the TSA guys at the airport were friendly!
We’ve already started making tentative plans to go back next year for the Stadium game but it’s going to depend on the schedule. I definitely want to go back next year but I want to do like I did here and go to block of home games. It’s a long way to travel for just one.

The Ledge #512: Drop That Needle
When Malibu Lou sent me an advance of the new Dogmatics single, "Drop That Single", I knew I had to create something special to highlight it's debut on The Ledge. After all, I've been a fan of the band since I first discovered their Homestead Records' releases while DJ'ing on KAUR way back in the mid-80's.
Given that the tune celebrates one of my favorite passions, playing records, it seemed natrual to create a show dedicated to my favorite physical format. So tonight's broadcast is all about records, and not just the format itself. There are tunes about record stores, record thieves, record collectors, turntables, needles.
I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows. These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs. And if you buy these records directly from the artist or label, please let them know you heard these tunes on The Ledge! Let them know who is giving them promotion! You can find this show at almost any podcast site, including iTunes and Stitcher...or

even my mom likes her childhood cartoons even though there weren't many back then 😭 plus they only had one tv in the village so it's not like she watched much lmao. people need to stop depriving themselves of joy just because they're "adults". i also love children's books! even took a class about it in uni...a bunch of people in their 20s and 30s + the professor were sitting and discussing charlotte's web, matilda and other kids' books. it was fun 😂
pooh has a male name in polish so i always thought of him as a male bear... but idk... 🤔 it probably doesn't matter haha 🤣
the emoji is perfectly fine with me haha! my chance to me and old men with a beard for a bit longer 😂 is there an emoji you'd like me to use for you?

your mama has good taste!! sometimes we just gotta get in touch with our inner child 😅 but yeah!! being just an adult with nothing to go back to and enjoy is so sad :(( but ahhh books!! i remember reading all those in school too 🥺 great times. i barely pick up a book anymore 😭
🤷🏻‍♀️pooh is a cute bear no matter what the gender hehe
ahhh yayy thank you 🥺 my favourite santa 💖 i usually go with the watermelon!! 🍉 but if that's taken, then i'm okay with any emoji you choose :))

40 years have passed since that day, and biting a Loacker wafer cookie still delivers the same feeling of care, comfort and deliciousness that it did on that cold morning on the top of the mountain. Everything I always believed a cookie should be, it’s just there: a crunchy bite, a rich filling, a superb combination of simple yet umami like flavors. The only difference is that now, when I find myself biting a chocolate or hazelnut Quadratini on a day dedicated to winter sports, I might have a cup filled with hot coffee to wash it down. Now that these cookies live permanently in my pantry, I fully understand my parents’ decision in selecting them as the special go-to treats for me and my brother so many years ago: rich chocolate, Alpine milk, fine Madagascar vanilla and sun-kissed Sicilian lemons. It does not matter what flavor I am in the mood for, each cookie is the quintessential affirmation of carefully selected ingredients and the given opportunity to be paired with a warm or cold beverage of choice. Still to this day, it is my very own personal and sinful joy, to indulge in a glass of cold whole milk and a handful of chocolate Quadratini before I go to bed: just like the child I was, I entertain myself separating the layers of these small cookies in my mouth, as if it was a game… rewarding myself, at the end of the day, with the richness of chocolate, its matte texture and the perfect size crunch. The way I see it, there is a “Quadratino” for every occasion: your morning espresso absolutely deserves a few dark chocolate filled squares; these two strong flavors compete for attention in your mouth, always leaving you surprised as you alternate the acidity of the beverage and the creaminess of the cookie. Scooping the foam off your cappuccino is, in my opinion, the perfect job for their hazelnut filled relatives, each dip turns the cookie into a very delicate mini dessert almost worth of a pastry shop window… I always told my daughters, leave the hazelnut flavor to the cookie and eat it with a real Italian coffee! Doctor Who: The Return of Doctor Mysterio (2016 Christmas Special)
I was going to watch the new episode with the new companion and then I remembered that I never watched the 2016 Christmas special, the one new DW episode we got in that miserable year
My first reaction to Twelve swinging upside down outside the window was that this is very reminiscent of Matt Smith’s Eleven, but I also haven’t watched Who in what, over a year? :/
“Mom says you can come in, you’re expected” ?!
The kid then gives him cookies and milk. Because there’s an old guy out the window and it’s Christmas Eve.
I wonder if they had to pay Marvel and DC for rights on all this...licensed merch
Wait I just realized this kid is American.
This kid reminds me of my cousin
“How do you have a glass of water in your pocket?” “Skills.”
Is there a Doctor Mysterio? IRL? (edit: just learned the title of the episode and maybe this WAS done on Who previously?)
localized disruption here in New York...ah
(btw I still am unsure how previous season ended, I watched it way back when and I re-read my lousy “live”blog and still don’t know what happened)
Uh-oh, what did this kid do with the gemstone
He ATE the gemstone. Because the *doctor* gave him a thing that looks like medicine and a glass of water
TBH I’m slightly surprised this accidental superhero thing didn’t happen sooner, it’s adorable and works for me
Another baby? I know James Cordon’s time on Who was a while ago, but...
Is he babysitting? His chest still glows red and...wait is that future kiddo or not
The bald guy from Bridesmaids and last year’s Christmas special is back!
Looking for “the little boy’s room” hmmmmm
This politician rich science guy who isn’t perturbed by the brains is rubbing me the wrong way I guess
I thought the lady in blue was Clara and was torn between OMG and GODDAMMIT
Ultimately I’m glad it’s not
EW the brain has EYES WHAT
AH UM the guy was playing dumb before?Oh no they “exchanged containers”
“I had a change of mind” THE WORDPLAY KILL ME
I mean did this guy not see any of this coming? He knew something was up when he wasn’t surprised by the brains what did he think was going to come of it. (I admit I sort of half-assed watch nowadays while on my laptop but still, what?)
Ooo the companion in this episode is a journalist!
Twelve and the bald kid have no kind of reunion - unless i missed it
It’s a superhero! “Oh my god he’s real. The ghost. Masked vigilante but he’s--super”
Um tbh this guy looks like Agent Smith from Deadpool (I don’t remember his real name, Jason?)
He has his very own Lois Lane!
Ew what is her political bias? What is “not to his taste”? Now is not the time for this I don’t want either of them to be alt-right or whatever the kids are calling it these days
(Because yeah, you either believe in human rights or you don’t. You either believe kids should have clean water and affordable education or you don’t. You are either on the right side of history or you aren’t. It is that simple.)
So is this kid from a while ago or from *today*
Well did he keep this promise or not (guess not)
“Sorry, duty calls” probably going back to babysitting
The Doctor has the baby *relief*
Yeah he confronts him about that promise he broke
Yeah he’s a nanny; torn between wanting to give kudos for a male nanny and wanting to tell moffat to fuck off for trying to check off some kind of list of subverting stereotypes I don’t even
Lois Lane is the mother of the baby he’s nannying for! hahaha
Wait hold up how can she afford this beautiful apartment in NYC as a journalist? Baby’s daddy ran off so it’s not like he’s bringing home the bacon
Is this brown haired kid with the glasses the kid? Yeah he can’t stop the X-ray vision...OH
AW
AWW
“It’s the gem-stone...responding to puberty”
“I have X-ray eyes. I like everyone” Ew wait he nannies for his middle school crush? I don’t like this. I would not want anyone from middle school watching my baby no matter how much they liked me or I liked them unless I straight up married them (which I haven’t)
She looks like Clara again. They have a type, don’t they?
This squeaky toy is so FUCKING ANNOYING and also unprofessional, fuck.
Throw the squeaky toy away, Doc! Holy shit!
She has good inference skills and yet she’s so annoying
That was so fast!
Why is Grant’s hair so lame, is it the Clark Kent thing? Clark’s hair wasn’t this lame.
His Ghost voice is much better than Christian Bale’s Batman grunt, I’ll give him that
Oh my god this girl has like no respect for Grant’s time? How can she be so smart and so dumb at the same time? Are real people like this??
And they’ve known each other for 24 years
And Doctor tells Grant to try not to be an idiot.....
Oh no the brains are going to try to take the Ghost
Some cool time magic from the Doctor
Hope they don’t try to take the Doctor
Doesn’t the Doctor have some kind of intergalactic police force behind him? Didn’t he at some point? This show makes no sense
“Good to keep an open mind!” heheh
He whistles and ah THERE’s the TARDIS
driven by the bald guy now in Constantinople garb
I’m sorry, where did bald guy come from again?
He’s a Christmas special companion is all? He mentioned getting cut out of Hydraflax which like rings a bell I guess
I DO NOT ship Lois Lane and The Ghost, this crush and whatever she has going on has lasted way too long (I don’t want to call it friendzone but--OH MY GOD is Stephen Moffat reimagining Superman as being friendzoned by Lois Lane?)
Y’all--if anyone even reads this--y’all know that the idea of the friend zone is problematic right? If you just see women as real people instead of just wanting to bone them, then there is no friend zone (that’s the thing--there should be no friend zone. It’s creepy that he does all this for her and it’s dumb that she has him nanny her kid and doesn’t even recognize that he’s the superhero. I’m not sure why he’s doing this. I get he’s like a good person or whatever, I don’t think he fails to see Lois Lane as a person, I just still don’t like this situation. They both deserve better.)
This started off SO WELL and now I have so many PROBLEMS with it
UGH is she realizing her feelings for Grant NOW
Oh no they’re gonna do the thing to the Ghost
Nannies are superheroes, did anyone ever argue this? (Whoops I might have trivialized it before)
Aw he tried to tell her! He’s still trying
She’s so dumb
OH NO
What does New York not being a capital city have to do with any of this again?
See, staging an alien attack while the aliens have already landed and integrated is an interesting premise, but when it’s just thrown out in passing...it’s not as good.
I like the New York being a sanctuary city talk, but like, I feel like I’m being pandered to?
“It’s a good plan! I like it! How come our side never has plans like that?” Same.
What the fuck, why couldn’t the Ghost get away
The aliens don’t recognize Grant is the Ghost, haha fuck
This villain guy is good casting
Oy vey now what’s happening
It’s up to Grant to save them !
The shrug he gives her is great though
“You know what? I prefer you in your superhero costume” WHAT that’s a SHITTY line
“You think this is over?” “Yah” *shoots the screwdriver* and AH, UNIT is on its way, I knew there was some kind of backup
EW the brain left the body...and moved into one of their own. This doesn’t need a sequel though
How was he gone 24 years is this something I’m supposed to know? He always comes back he’s a goddamn time traveler
Oh good she got rid of the squeaky toy
“Her name was River Song” yeah but BOTH of them are TIME TRAVELERS
River was another thing that started off so well
Oh so the today stuff was the return of Doctor Mysterio, and the stuff with child Grant was the original?
Next time: I’M SO EXCITED FOR BILL

Design Milk’s 2020 Father’s Day Gift Guide
Father’s Day is looming on the horizon, but there’s still enough time to get something special to communicate your heartfelt appreciation for every one of his efforts – seen and unseen. We’ve gathered a variety of gift ideas below, suitable for a variety of passions and interests, but each chosen to be used and appreciated for years to come, rather than hidden away in a sock drawer or tie rack. Splurge on something nice for dad, because we all know he deserves it.
Absolute Terrazzo Cedar + Saffron Soap \\\ $16 + Black Two Tone Chambray Towel \\\ $61 Want to give the father in your life a gift set that will keep them smelling and feeling good? Look no further than this pairing of cedar and saffron infused vegan bar soap partnered with a soft Japanese cotton bath towel. Not only is the pair complementary in purpose, but the terrazzo stone tile design looks especially pleasant alongside the grey two-tone towel.
Xcissor Full-Set Pen \\\ $78 Being a father requires being both adaptable and resourceful, attributes finely represented by this multi-tool combination that operates as scissors, art knife, and pen. Give one and tell Dad you’ve always appreciated that he’s always been prepared to help down to the smallest details.
Flos Bellhop Table Lamp LED \\\ $295 Working from home policies dictate many of us are making due the best we can in regards to the idea of staking out space for a “home office”. These portable LED table lamps can add a layer of refined style to any surface as a desk lamp during work hours, and easily moved anywhere for their illuminating presence during after hours with a 24-hour charge via USB-C cable.
Architect Black Steel Pour-Over Coffee Stand \\\ $99 Paired with a monthly coffee subscription like one offered by Yes Plz, this sleek and compact pour-over setup delivers a third wave coffee experience without necessitating a lot of counter space. And if budget dictates for something a little more affordable, we also recommend this 4-cup pour over set.
The Chrome MXD Laptop Sling \\\ $120 For dads perpetually on the go, a laptop sling offers a physically unobtrusive solution for carrying gear in stealth fashion. The MXD Link Sling is our favorite, accommodating a 13″ Macbook Pro and outfitted with a trio of pockets for accessories. Designed to be worn cross-body sling or as a waistpack, it’s an adaptable design befitting cyclists, commuters, and remote workers who want to come prepared, but travel light.
Sennheiser 75th Anniversary HD 25 Headphones \\\ $100 Audiophile brand Sennheiser have long made some of the best headphones in the industry, but these 75th anniversary limited edition HD 25 headphones with their bright yellow earpads are a particularly eye-catching gift idea for the dad serious about immersing himself in music while at home. Nab one now, because they’re limited to 25,000 units worldwide.
Beoplay E8 Graphite Wireless Earphones \\\ $350 We know we’ve just recommended over-the-ear headphones above, but while out and about we prefer the convenience of in-ear earbuds for their discreet and less cumbersome comfort. Bang & Olufsen’s E8 earphones include four different sized silicone tips and pair of Complyfoam tips, quelling any concerns about a proper fit for your recipient. These earbuds are also come conveniently equipped for Qi-certified wireless charging through its luxe anodized aluminum and leather wrapped case.
Miele CM5300 Espresso Machine \\\ $1499 Being a father is a tiring responsibility and may necessitate the aid of some coffee. A super automatic espresso machine like the Miele CM53300 offers a respite of simplicity, not only handling the responsibilities of dosing and grinding beans automatically, but perfectly brewing and pouring coffee-based drinks for one or two people. The sleek and simplified design is practically a one-button affair, but the machine also permits users to customize lattes and cappuccinos for length, dose, and temperature. Yes, it’s a significant sum, but Miele’s most compact machine is the sort of appliance that will be appreciated every morning with every cup.
Tiki Fire Pit \\\ $350 Give dad an opportunity to satiate his great outdoor urges by inviting him to set up camp in the backyard with this simple, safe, and convenient fire pit designed to use real wood pellets. The two chamber stainless steel is engineered to manage airflow to produce high heat flames with minimal smoke, and clean-up is a cinch thanks to a removable ash pan. S’mores not included, but highly recommended as a first fire supplement.
Copenhagen Steak Knife Set from Georg Jensen \\\ $95 Modern, minimalist Scandinavian design gives these matte stainless steel steak knives an understated elegance, made with an heirloom attention to detail – the sort of everyday useful design worthy of passing along from father to son or daughter.
Crossover Black Watch \\\ $149 Fashionable father alert! Tell dad you’ve always got time for his fine sense of style with this stylish juxtaposition to be worn across the wrist, combining three colored hands – the yellow ticking away the seconds, white marking the minutes, and hour hand followed in grey. Available in either black leather or stainless steel mesh.
Besito Vapes \\\ $38 Whether you know it or not, dad is definitely in need of a moment to relax. If he happens to live in cannabis-friendly California, afford him a moment of chill with a Besito vape. The tres chic brass hued pens deliver precisely dosed amounts of flavor-infused 2:1 THC and CBD sourced from California-grown hybrid cannabis; the mint and grapefruit flavors taste especially pleasing, formulated to take the edge off without overpowering. Package one with a TROVA GO for a cannabis-themed combo.
Balmuda the Toaster \\\ $329 Until recently, this Japanese toaster remained a cult favorite abroad, its popularity amongst bread+toasting loving aficionados attributed to its ability to create a satisfyingly crispy exterior while retaining a moist inside. The secret is a small receptacle where a thimble-sized amount of water is introduced to create an optimal amount of steam to retain a moist, fluffy interior and crisp crumb. And indeed, in our experience the Balmuda does justice to artisanal bread and Japanese milk toast, producing ASMR-satisfying texture. The compact design can also bake cookies, heat up frozen foods, and cook casseroles, offering utility beyond producing perfect toast.

IS SANTA REAL?
So tonight was a big night for our family. We (mostly me) have had a strong conviction this past year on the idea of Santa. Okay, let me first start by saying, to each its own. What you do in your family with your kids is your thing. I do not care if you do Santa, if you don’t do Santa, if you co-sleep, if you bottle-feed, if you breastfeed, if you vaccinate, if you don’t, if you attend church, if you don't. I hold no judgement in my heart for what you do in your family. God gave you your kids for a reason and you deserve to parent them exactly how you see fit. So know, before you read my story, that I don’t think I am right and you are wrong. I think you are right and I fully stand behind you when it comes to parenting your children and I think I am right when it comes to parenting mine. We are in this together and we are both doing the best we can and THAT, my friend, is absolutely good enough for me!
This afternoon, I had a play date today with a dear friend of mine who I sincerely love and adore. The Santa topic came up and we discussed the idea of Santa, what we have and have not told our children about Santa and the social pressure that is found on both sides of the argument for and against Santa. I left that conversation feeling convicted. Not because she convicted me, in fact she is the sort of friend who allows me to be exactly who I am without trying to change me (tip for y’all….find those friends and keep them around!). She doesn’t do Santa, we do, no big deal. But I have had the overwhelming feeling like this year was different. The conversation we had only inspired me to be brave in my quest to parenting and shepherding my children well. I felt a strong desire to share with my children the truth this year about Santa and I planned on following through with that conviction.
Later that evening we went to a Christmas celebration at the local museum. An event Santa was invited too. As we stood in line, I told Matt about my convictions and….well, if you know Matt, you know what happened next. We allowed our kiddos to sit on Santa’s lap, we allowed them to share with him their desires of their hearts and we took a killer picture. It was a sweet moment, I knew it wouldn’t last forever and I knew in that moment, that this would be the very last moment like this.  I knew once I shared my convictions with Matt, he would go in to husband mode and “handle business". Truth be told, he never loved the idea of Santa. He didn’t feel the need to tell them something that wasn’t true and he never truly saw the fun in Santa. I did though, so he patiently and graciously played along. But when I gave him permission to speak the truth, HE DID!
So friends who work their butts off making Christmas magical, friends who spend hours doing the whole "santa thang”, friends who are up late decorating your tree with Santa filled goodies, leaving cookies by the fire and milk by the tree, you ARE NOT wrong. I AM NOT RIGHT. This is just MY story, and MY journey, living life the best way I know how. So I share, I overshare. In hopes to meet someone where they are, in the middle of their messy lives trying to live their best life possible. I don’t care where you are in your journey, you are absolutely where you need to be! I only share this part of my story for those ready and willing to receive it. Friends, if you do Santa, I SUPPORT YOU! I promise I do!
It was after our picture with Santa that Matt pulled Wyatt aside. He shared with him the truth. It broke his little heart (okay let’s just be honest, I don’t think it broke his heart I think it just broke mine and I don’t even know what was said!). He was brave, he was accepting of the truth. Then I stepped in. Let me tell you about something I have learned about myself over the past few weeks. I am not good with my words, at all. I stumble with my words, I go back and forth on issues and I rarely make sense… but when I do, I DO! There are moments when I am speaking and the words coming out of my mouth say something and I am quietly saying, “yes, yes, yes! THIS is truth spilling from my mouth, this is what my soul needed to hear”, these are moments I have learned to listen to, these are the moments that bring so much clarity to my current situation, these are the moments I hear the Lord speaking to my heart. So tonight, I want to share with MY truth!
You guys, I have been wrecked the past 2 months, seeing God show up in ways I could never could have even imagined when it comes to the desires He has placed in my heart. I’ve had this strong desire for something that I simply cannot shake. It is scary, it is new, it is unknown but it is there and it is big! God put that desire in my heart and I am moving forward asking God faithfully to give me the desires of my heart knowing full well that it was Him who put those desires there and knowing full well that He is faithful to deliver and I want the same for my children. We (Matt and I) have taught our children to give Santa all the glory for the desires of their hearts. Wyatt wants a skateboard for Christmas, it has been on his Christmas list since summer. I have repeatedly told him to put it on his Christmas list for Santa, because maybe, just maybe, he will get that gift he so desperately desires if Santa wants to make his wish come true. But why? God put that desire in my son’s heart so why am I allowing the big guy in the red suit to get all the credit when that desire, when that dream is fulfilled?
You guys, GOD IS THAT GOOD! He truly does want to give us the desires of our hearts, He wants us to come to Him, He wants us to dream big. He wants us to ask for things that are simply impossible. Why am I teaching my children to ask Santa for things only God can deliver? That convicted me. I started speaking to Wyatt the truth of the Lord and as I was speaking to his heart, I also spoke to mine, I spoke directly to the current situation we have found ourselves in. I told him that only God fills the desires of our hearts and every single Santa gift he ever received was because God was the one who fulfilled it. He was the one who made that desire known and He was the one who gave mom and dad the resources to purchase and fulfill that desire. It is and always has been, all about Him.
As I shared with Wyatt that truth, I felt a sense of relief but also a strong sense of guilt. Can we talk for a second about guilt? I feel a lot of guilt surrounding this one issue. I absolutely stole a little part of his childhood he will never get back. His little heart was wounded, I know, I see it, I can absolutely feel it, I can see the effect our choices have had on his little heart. He told me tonight before bed that “Santa was the last one he (I) believed in”. My heart breaks for the heartbreak he feels tonight as he goes to bed but I am reminded that God is bigger than my mistakes. He is bigger than my ability to mess this up. I cannot mess this up, God’s redeeming love stretches out to cover all my failures, all my sins. He can use this mess for His message, because tonight, as I shared with my son the truth about Santa, I felt like the Lord was giving me freedom from the very things that hold me back, the very thing that keeps me from pursuing the desires of my own heart. He gave me freedom to know that it doesn’t take my own doings to get the desires of my heart, it takes me being fully free to live in the freedom only God provides. A whole lot of small yeses lead to risk, big, big risks, that ultimately lead to a big reward.
I am learning that God is just patiently waiting, waiting for us to dream big. It is almost like God puts big, unachievable dreams and desires right in front of us to get us to a point of ultimate surrender. That is when He shows us, it is when He says, “sit back kiddo, watch me fulfill this dream, watch me give you the desires of your heart, this is how much I love you.” And it is the same for my kids, I plan on teaching them young that there is nothing our God cannot do. He had a toy shop bigger then Santa, He has been and will continue to be watching their every move, not to bring shame or punishment on their lives but to bring fulfillment and faithfulness to every desire that fills their sweet little hearts. They are worthy of that love, we all are worth of that love.

Spring is almost in reach, but based on the weather—and the selection at my local farmers market—winter isn’t giving up just yet. When I need a taste of warmer days, I immediately turn to citrus. Lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruits are mercifully in peak season just when we could all use a little extra brightness in our days. Brush up on all the varieties with our handy field guide to citrus, then dig into these 20 recipes—we’ve got everything you need, from pomelo salad and orange-braised short ribs to lemon scones and lime pie.
Savory
Winter Citrus Salad With Black Pepper, Feta, and Mint
[Photograph: Jennifer Olvera]
This vibrant, colorful salad features blood oranges, minneolas, naval oranges, and white grapefruit, but you can feel free to substitute whatever looks best at the market. Beyond the fruit, all you need is a simple dressing of olive oil, red wine vinegar, and honey, along with fresh mint and feta cheese for garnish.

Fennel and Radicchio Salad With Tangerine Vinaigrette
[Photograph: Daniel Gritzer]
This simple salad of thinly sliced fennel and radicchio is dressed with a citrusy vinaigrette that uses acidic tangerine and lemon juice in place of vinegar. Grated zest amplifies the tangerine flavor and a pinch of ground fennel seed complements the sliced fennel bulb.

Winter Greens Salad With Fennel, Citrus, and Creamy Citrus Vinaigrette

When you cut citrus into suprèmes, they lose a lot of liquid. Rather than let it go to waste, catch that flavorful juice in a bowl to make a dressing with mayo, lemon juice, honey, and olive oil. We like to use the creamy vinaigrette to dress a salad made with endive, radicchio, escarole, fennel, and the jewel-like wedges of tart-sweet fruit.

Roasted-Beet and Citrus Salad With Ricotta and Pistachio Vinaigrette
[Photograph: J. Kenji López-Alt]
The combination of sweet, earthy beets and bright citrus is a total classic. One of our favorite ways to marry the two ingredients is to roast the beets until tender, toss in a pistachio vinaigrette with grapefruit and orange, and serve it all on top of creamy ricotta. Finish with more pistachios—the crunchy nuts give the salad some textural contrast.

Toasted-Bulgur Salad With Smoked Trout, Radishes, and Green Apple
[Photograph: Vicky Wasik]
There’s a lot to love in this salad—chewy toasted bulgar; meaty smoked trout; and assertive sliced radishes, red onion, and green apple—but the real star is candied lemon. Using a technique borrowed from chef Yotam Ottolenghi, we soak lemon suprèmes in simple syrup, which mellows their harsh bite without dulling their flavor. As an added bonus, you wind up with lemon syrup perfect for making cocktails.

Vietnamese Citrus and Noodle Salad With Fresh Herbs and Fried Yuba (Tofu Skin)
This light-yet-filling Vietnamese salad is packed with all sorts of textures—tender rice noodles, juicy citrus, crispy fresh veggies, and crunchy fried tofu skin. The spicy vinaigrette would traditionally be made with fish sauce, but to keep the recipe vegan while still giving the dressing a savory backbone we add a dash of Maggi-brand liquid aminos.

Spicy Thai-Style Pomelo, Green Bean, and Zucchini Salad
[Photograph: J. Kenji López-Alt]
Pomelos—dry, meaty, slightly bitter citrus fruit—are a staple salad ingredient in Thailand. Here in the US you might not be able to find them, so feel free to substitute non-sweet grapefruit in this salad made with blanched green beans, raw zucchini and shallots, and fresh mint.

Sopa de Lima (Yucatán-Style Lime Soup)
This soup is traditionally made with another type of citrus you probably won’t find in your local market: Yucatán sour lime. While the fruit looks like a normal lime, it has a sweeter, more floral aroma and a slightly bitter aftertaste that is best imitated with a mix of lime and grapefruit juice. Along with the citrus, we flavor the soup with a sofrito made from charred garlic and tomatoes.

Roasted Sweet Potato Soup With Pistachio, Orange, and Mint Salsa
[Photograph: Vicky Wasik]
Orange juice gives this warming sweet potato soup a subtle citrus edge. We highlight that flavor by garnishing the soup with a gremolata made with orange zest, pistachios, scallions, mint, and olive oil. Roasting the spuds takes about 90 minutes—a low, slow cook is necessary to bring out their sweetness, so don’t be tempted to cheat and crank up the oven.

Orange and Leek Loukaniko (Greek Sausage)
Loukaniko can refer to all sorts of Greek pork sausages, but order one at random and chances are good that you’ll get a sausage flavored with plenty of aromatic orange zest. Our recipe pairs the zest with oregano, thyme, garlic, coriander, and sautéed leeks. Once the sausages are stuffed, we cure them overnight in the fridge, smoke them for a couple hours, and grill until crispy and charred.

Braised Chinese-Style Short Ribs With Soy, Orange, and 5-Spice Powder
[Photograph: Emily and Matt Clifton]
We use orange two ways in these Chinese-style short ribs. First, we add the juice and zest to the braise, along with rice wine vinegar, soy sauce, and five-spice powder. Then, we finish it off with more zest to brighten up the slow-cooked dish. If you’re only cooking for a couple people, you’re going to have leftovers—shred the meat the next day to make killer tacos.

Blueberry-Lemon Scones
The secret to this recipe is to use coconut oil and coconut milk instead of dairy. Butter and cream can dull lemon’s flavor—going vegan preserves the fruit’s citrusy brightness. Don’t worry, though—these scones taste like lemon and blueberry rather than coconut. I’d highly recommend sprinkling the uncooked scones with toasted or turbinado sugar, which bakes into a beautiful crust.

Lime Possets With Mint and Mango Fruit Salad
[Photograph: Daniel Gritzer]
A posset is a type of pudding made without eggs, gelatin, or starch—it’s thickened with citrus juice in much the same way as yogurt or paneer. Lemon and lime juice are the most common choices because of their high acidity, so here we go with lime juice (plus zest for extra flavor). You can serve the possets as is, but they’re even better topped with a mint and mango fruit salad and a dollop of whipped cream.

Fresh and Creamy Lime Pie
Taking the best elements of key lime pie and lemon meringue pie, this recipe features a creamy milk-based custard, graham-y whole wheat pastry crust, and an airy Swiss meringue. Both the milk and the heat of the oven mellow the flavor of the lime, so we add a few drops of rosewater to perk it back up. As with all citrus recipes, be careful to only use nonreactive cooking equipment, or you’ll wind up with a metallic-tasting dish.

Sunny Lemon Bars
The custard for our lemon bars goes in a slightly different direction—we leave out the milk and use a mixture of whole eggs and a bunch of extra egg yolks. Those added yolks deliver enough body that we can leave out the cornstarch, ensuring that the custard is crystal-clear and vibrant. To garnish, you can keep it classic with a generous dusting of powdered sugar or take it a step further by adding lemon chantilly and candied pistachios.

Crispy Citrus-Candied Pistachios
Those pistachios deserve a closer look—they have a remarkably intense citrus flavor because we candy them using our concentrated fresh lemon syrup. Making the syrup is just a matter of macerating juiced lemon peels in sugar, so if you’ve already squeezed a bag of fruit to make the lemon bars, then you’re already halfway there.

Lemon Meltaways
I was shocked the first time I had a lemon meltaway—when made properly these shortbread cookies are so tender that they border on cotton candy territory. Most recipes give the cookies their delicate texture with a mixture of powdered sugar and cornstarch. This works fine, except that the cornstarch gives the cookies an unpleasantly starchy flavor. Replacing it with tapioca starch yields the same texture without the aftertaste.

Orange Creamsicle Frozen Yogurt
While I have a place in my heart for a classic creamsicle, I’ll take this creamsicle-inspired frozen yogurt over the original anytime. Rich, tangy full-fat frozen yogurt perfectly complements the flavor of the fruit, which comes through strong thanks to both orange juice and zest.

Saffron, Honey, and Orange Ice Cream
This ice cream is all about balance—light honey brings out saffron’s floral side, the earthy saffron tempers the sweetness of the honey, and a pinch of orange zest adds a subtle brightness. Be sure to use saffron threads, rather than the powdered stuff, for the purest flavor.

Toasted Coconut and Lime Ice Cream
This tropical ice cream pairs nutty coconut and aromatic lime, making it an ideal accompaniment to rum cake or fresh pineapple. The recipe calls for sweetened coconut because it’s more widely available than unsweetened, but be careful—we toast the coconut before adding it to the dairy, and the sugar can burn quickly.

Meyer Lemon Ice Cream
This silky smooth, tart ice cream is inspired by lemon meringue pie. The recipe calls for Meyer lemons, which deliver a more rounded, sweeter flavor than mouth-puckeringly tart “regular” lemons. As with Stella’s lemon bars, this ice cream only gets better with a dollop of lemon chantilly, made by extracting intense lemon flavor from the rinds. For something a bit sweeter, you can also garnish with a spoonful of tender, ruby red roasted strawberries.
