Tuesday, May 27: Bullet for My Valentine, "Leech"

Temper Temper was supposed to crystalize Bullet for My Valentine’s status as one of the world’s few commercially successful heavy metal acts, and among the handful of heavy rock groups that are not only palatable to but well-liked by radio audiences.  Instead, their fourth record was created largely by Matt Tuck and Michael "Moose" Thomas as a duo and was immediately derided as a bridge too far, even as some tracks like “Leech” tried to hew closer to the band’s metalcore origins.  It was clear that Tuck was trying to have it both ways, nodding to The Poison while also preserving the sheen that Don Gilmore brought to Fever, and as a mid-period BFMV cut it checked the boxes: the riffing was sharp and catchy, Moose’s drumming was precise and pushed the tune along, and Tuck’s love ‘em/hate ‘em vocals stayed on brand.  But even with Gilmore’s polished production, “Leech” felt out of context with the rest of Temper Temper and a little disingenuous as a result, as if it was BFMV offering a sop to their core fanbase while continuing to chase mainstream audiences.
