GOOD SOUNDS:
33. PEBALUNA
youtube
Hailing from Long Beach, California, USA is the elegantly soulful folk band Pebaluna. Fronted by Lauren Coleman & Matthew Embree, Pebaluna is minimalist art at it’s finest. Pebaluna’s sound is timeless. The band’s acoustic-heavy vibes, amidst the sweet sounds of ukelele & guitar is a perfect combination of harmony & beauty. This is especially true when listening to the vocal work (like buttah) from Coleman & Embree. Lauren Coleman is the primary voice in the band, with a gentleness that shines through her sweet croon (complimented with perfection by Embree) soaring over a super-groovin’ rhythm section with Jonathan Grillo on Bass & Jessica Lankford on Percussion.
Pebaluna’s sound is entirely romantic & sweet & fun. “Penguin Island” is probably my favorite song by the band (hahaha) - always makes me smile (inside & out), while there are other aspects of Pebaluna that do tell stories of heartbreak and loneliness. Of course, Pebaluna also shows off more dance-friendly tunes, such as “Please Me” from the album “Carny Life” (SUCH a rad tune).
With an obvious influence of jazz, blues, country, and soul music (especially with some familiar covers of some classic songs) - Pebaluna has a mighty heart. I think more people should enjoy the sounds of Pebaluna - Lauren & Matt had successfully created a sound that pays homage to straight-forward song-writing and story-telling through music while also bringing a refreshing new sound vibrant enough for both older & younger listeners to appreciate.
Pebaluna has an enormous heart & soul. A work of art tailor-made for the more romantic types in the world. I highly recommend checkin’ ‘em out.
Happy Listening!

Our Monday recap includes everything from the drafted teams to Sports Center Top 10 catches in the outfield.
The morning started off with a practice that was meant to loosen up the muscles, but what it turned into was a tryout for the campers to be scouted by their favorite coaches. The looming worry about the lunch time draft left players diving for fly balls, swinging the bat to hit the ball to the moon, and straining muscles they didn’t even know they had. It was as if they were that little kid again in gym class, waiting for their name to be called onto a team. Don’t fret campers, everyone gets drafted! Participation trophies for all!
The doors then closed and the coaching staff got started on the draft. The room was tense as each name was taken and put onto the board. Victor Rodriguez and Frank Viola got into a scrum over a player who they thought would lead them to the 2020 Fantasy Camp Championship. Trot and Dauber whispered side by side, strategically planning their next move. Alan Embree talked up players he knew nothing about to try and throw off next round choices, but the group caught on to his guerrilla warfare tactics. El Tiante fell asleep.

The teams got together, sang a cheer, and headed out to the fields to try and win their first regular season match.
The Bombers and Heroes had a close game in the main stadium. The campers got fired up as their name could be heard over the loud speakers walking up to the plate. Each team was facing the sun in the outfield. Their chances of catching any fly balls was slim. Against all odds, they rose to the occasion! There were multiple catches made that had the crowd jumping up and down, cheering in pure amazement. Steve Wolfe (Awwwoooooooo) made an unbelievable, almost backwards, snag in the right center. The Heroes were able to rally and win 4-6.
Sabe’s Babes and Wins & Saves was a different story. Wins and Saves crushed the Babes, 14-6. Bret Saberhagen was seen shedding a tear in the dugout after the game, while coach Tom Gordon flipped the Gatorade cooler. Yikes… Wins & Saves, congrats on the first game W and welcome to the winner’s circle- for now.
The Legends and the Outlaws had 27 runs all together. These games were coach pitched. Maybe our coaches should get some more practice in before lobbing the ball over the plate. Campers, take it while you can! That was just a warm up. Embree’s Outlaws outlasted the Legends, and came away with the 15-12 victory.
Something must have been in the water at JetBlue Park yesterday morning, because there was another 29 run game. Stanley’s Steamers and Corsi’s Fireballers went neck and neck, fighting until the last inning. Corsi was seen pacing the dugout, almost about the charge the Ump, at every play. After last camp, Corsi was longing for a team that could win a game. And gosh dammit, the Fireballers did not disappoint. His team ended the drought and won the game 15-14. Corsi, your luck may be changing!
The last game was a blowout not usually seen during coach pitched games. Billy’s Ballgamers demolished Nixon’s DirtDogs 18-3. You heard it here folks, 18-3. Trot is known for pitching zingers against his own team, but was that the reasoning here? Or did Billy “Where’s the sunscreen?” Mueller and Keith “I need to take a nap” Foulke draft the dream team to beat?
We’ll have to wait and see!

The Sound Of Animals Fighting Played Their First Show In Almost Five Years And This Is What It Looked Like
Tumblr media
All photos by Amanda Canton
The Sound Of Animals Fighting, otherwise known as the (sometimes) masked supergroup featuring Anthony Green, Matt Embree, Rich Balling, Matthew Kelly, Chris Tsagakis, Steve Choi, Jonathan Hischke and others, played their first live show last week in almost five years. Let us repeat again that for those of you who aren’t fully paying attention: Last week at Los Angeles’ historic Wiltern Theater, FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ALMOST FIVE YEARS, the supergroup known as The Sound Of Animals Fighting took the stage to a sold out crowd of over 1,500 people.
Playing a sixteen song set from their brilliantly odd three-album discography, fans were treated to a show many thought would never happen again. Joined by fellow thought-provoking alternative outcasts Planes Mistaken For Stars, the night, as you probably guessed, was a cosmic collection of chaos and flawless musicianship.
Now betting that a handful of you were probably unable to attend the show, thankfully, Noise contributor Amanda Canton was in attendance capturing dozens of mesmerizing photos for all us to look back on and imagine what it was like to witness “Act I: Chasing Suns” and “The Ocean and the Sun” live.
To check out the photos, be sure to look below. Afterward, make sure to grab tickets to see The Sound Of Animals Fighting out on their remaining tour dates here.

The Sound Of Animals Fighting Go Apeshit At Webster Hall
By Joseph Buscarello - On Jan 23, 2023
Post-hardcore collective The Sound of Animals Fighting rolled through Webster Hall this past Saturday, January 21st, for the penultimate show on their 2023 winter tour. The tour comes fresh off the release of their new EP, and first new music in 15 years, Apeshit. These shows mark the band’s only fourth ever tour, but the hardcore supergroup were in fine form Saturday night as the eight-piece collective constantly shifted roles and personnel throughout the night.
The Sound of Animals Fighting have always existed behind shroud and mystery, famously doing their original press photos wearing animal masks and only identifying the band members via their animal monikers. While the core lineup has not been a mystery in a long time, the band has a new permutation of their rotating personnel for this era. Vocalist Anthony Green (Circa Survive, Saosin, L.S. Dunes) anchors the band with his soaring, melodic vocal style backed by RX Bandits members Rich Balling, Matt Embree, Steve Choi, and Chris Tsagakis. Rounding out the Apeshit lineup is Keith Goodwin (Days Away, Good Old War), Matthew Kelly (The Autumns), and Jonathan Hischke.
On Apeshit, The Sound of Animals Fighting dial back the atmosphere and cinematic elements of their style in favor of more straight forward and in-your-face post hardcore. Standout track “Sharon Tate, Despite Everything” comes in waves; Rich Balling drones over a dark and melodic instrumental with sporadic drumming then Anthony Green barges in screaming out a long “Sharon Tate…” as the song takes on a more formal post-hardcore progression. The two sections blend together as the song progresses, creating one of the most interesting songs in the genre in some time. The title track kicks off the EP with a relentless hardcore presentation and technical, near math rock guitar and rhythm sections. Things slow down a bit on “Wolf”, with swirling and distorted synths backed by electronic drum kicks before the EP closes with “Duche Das”, most reminiscent of the interludes on 2007’s Tiger and The Duke.
With the tour over, and the EP released, the future is uncertain for The Sound of Animals Fighting. The band has only toured four times since their debut in 2005 and all of their members are active in many other projects. Anthony Green himself has seen a resurgence in recent years, forming new band L.S. Dunes (who are fresh off a debut LP and tour) and remaining active in Saosin. While Circa Survive is currently on hiatus, you never know what Green will embark on next.
The passion and cohesiveness of The Sound of Animals Fighting was top tier at Webster Hall this past weekend. The band performs as if they have been on regular tour for 15 years and the energy and engagement with the crowd was palpable. While we wait and see what the future holds, we can rest assured that we just witnessed one of the best post-hardcore tours in recent memory. Check out the full photo gallery from Webster Hall below.
The Sound of Animals Fighting, Webster Hall 1/21/2023

GOOD SOUNDS:
22. RX BANDITS
Hailing from various beaches in California, USA is the one and only Rx Bandits. Originally starting out as a Ska-Punk band, throughout the years this is a band that has had quite the adventure in musical stylings and transformations in sound (all while still maintaining loyal to their musical roots despite the changes). At one time having a horn section, the band is a very, very solid 4-piece.
Rx Bandits is one of the most under-appreciated bands in terms of their musicianship, lyrical content, and overall presence in the music community. Aside from being one of the hardest working bands out there in terms of sheer musical work, the band consists of some of the most down-to-earth, but totally bold-to-go-where-no-man-has-gone-before musical virtuosos I’ve ever had the honor of experiencing live (as any true RxB fan, at least a dozen times).
Although I do have a particular fondness for the band’s line-up with horns (long gone are the days of Chris Sheets & Steve Borth II) - there is no denying the amount of musical prowess the band maintains as a 4-piece. Few acts can sustain a level of total creativity while trimmin’ down the member count. The loss of horns does not have any negative toll on the band’s efforts in their albums, which is truly remarkable considering it’s very rare to find bands that can get better with each effort after having produced so many songs (of an advanced level of skills).
Matthew Embree (guitar/lead vocals) is the heart & soul of Rx Bandits, and Chris Tsagakis (Drums/Percussion/the only other member who has been in the band throughout it’s entirety) is the unbreakable backbone of the group. Steve Choi (guitar/keys/backup vocals) had joined up around the time ‘Progress’ had been released (which was the first album I had bought from them). The combination of Choi & Embree’s guitars, with Joe Troy’s sweet grooves (on Bass, respectively) has an unmatched level of not only melody, but experimentation, and overall awe-inspiring rawness mixed with a constant driving push forward (as they are always getting better and better).
Matthew Embree’s vocals are probably some of the most soothing you will ever encounter, ranging from heartfelt howls, to endearingly delicate falsettos, and very expressive vocals that truly open the floodgates of the soul. In this case, Embree has the ability to express the concerns of mankind (and mankind’s overall destiny), the technology take-over, love in all it’s glory, the tragedies found inherent in the developing apathy of the times, and everything else in between.
Embree’s vocals rest on top of guitars that have the ability to enchant as well as intimidate (due to the raw power, speed, and finesse combined with very challenging and a superior level of song-writing). The rhythm section shines bright with the counter-melody grooves and a drummer that knows no musical limitations.
The band’s strong core values and overall decency is the best part of the band - the fact that these are truly good dudes who just want to put some good out there (while carrying with them, musical genius) - it’s very rare to find such a level of compassion combined with expression. Rx Bandits is truly an anomaly in the music world, but more importantly, a true lesson that the best music comes from the underground.. OH! and also that some of the best musicians you will find at some point in time played a lot of really good Ska music. Aside from Rx Bandits - these dudes have all accomplished so many other side projects (I’m not gonna name-drop, I’m not gonna name-drop..ah screw it - The Sound of Animals Fighting, Love You Moon, C-Gak, Technology, Apotheke, The Bruce Lee Band (backing for Mike Park), Pebaluna, Seekret Socyetee, Coke vs Bills, Biceratops, Machines, The Chinkees; SEARCHING FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE! YES!, and the list goes ON and ON hahaha).
There is no band out there like Rx Bandits - this is a truly unique and one-of-a-kind band that has truly made a profound influence in the music world (while staying true to themselves and their fans). Seriously, one of the best bands in the world you will ever experience.
Happy Listening!

With a heavy heart and lots of ice packs, it’s sad to say that our 2020 Fantasy Camps have come to an end! Our second Fantasy Camp finished off with all-night celebrations for The Bombers who hoisted up the Championship Trophy.  Dave Smith cried his eyes out as Geddy piggy-backed him all the way to Shoeless Joes. It was a beautiful sight to see.
Fighting off hangovers and caffeine headaches Saturday morning, the campers made their way back to the park for one final face off, but this time - against the Pros.
Swing, a miss. Swing, miss again. Swing, and that’s three. That was the story all afternoon. To the campers credit, there were definitely some dingers into the outfield, a few foul balls, and the occasional  grounder to short. The Pros did not disappoint and played, well, like pros.  It was like they’ve played the game before or something.
The All-Star game followed, with the Yaz Division facing off against the Williams Division. Check out your 2020 Fantasy Camp All-Stars below:
 Williams Division:
•       Evan Anderson

•       Justin Steinbach
•       Curt Swift Sr.
•       John Tointigh
•       Scott Vibert
And just like that -The campers cleaned out their lockers, packed up their bags, and headed to Crowne Plaza for Closing Banquet.
Tom Kennedy kicked off the evening by celebrating funny camp moments, in particular, congratulating the winners of the Toilet Bowl Championship. Hobson’s Heroes fought like it was their last game of camp (because it was) and were able to come away with the win. I would exaggerate and say the stands were filled, cheers were heard all over town, but even I can’t sell that big of a story.
Congratulations to our 2020 Fantasy Camp Toilet Bowl Champions! Managed by Butch Hobson and coached by Rich Garces & Luis Tiant

Heroes, hold your Toilet Bowls proudly, put them on the mantle in your living rooms, show them off to your family and friends. What an accomplishment.
Another highly anticipated round of awards are the team MVPs. Let’s not forget to mention that the best player by stats does not always get the team award. The recipient can be a camper who showed great team spirit, love for his fellow teammates, or someone that gave it 110%, regardless of talent. That’s what Fantasy Camp is all about!! Being a team player and not ticking off Corsi.
A huge congratulations to the winners below:
 Lenny’s Legends: PAUL PEREIRA
Billy’s Ballgamers: BRIAN STOLTZ
Nixon’s DirtDogs: VINCENT WELCH
Sabe’s Babes: JON BEAN
Stanley’s Steamers: TODD KOPCYNZKI
Corsi’s Fireballers: JUSTIN STEINBACH
Wins & Saves: AL HERNANDEZ
Hobson’s Heroes: JAMES KELLY
Embree’s Outlaws: TOM SULLIVAN
Gedman’s Bombers: JOE GILL
 What a group!!
That brings us to our individual award winners. These awards are given to campers that have skills across the board, from batting excellence (it’s all relative) to pitching domination, to professional water boys. Your 2020 winners below:
 Home Run King: JOHN TOINTIGH
Trainer’s Award: DANNY TANGEN
Mr. Personality: SCOTT SNOW
Hustle: MARK ELGART
Rookie of the Year: RYAN KELLY

 MONIKA SELMONT
 RICHARD SHINKLE
 GARY STEVENS

What a squad, led by the fearless Rich Gedman, Dave Smith, and Rick Wise!
After an afternoon of awards,  celebrations, and comradery, the campers joined together in a special moment to celebrate Red Sox Hall of Fame Inductee, Rich Gedman. It was only fitting that his team came away with the Championship Title. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room as Butch Hobson spoke about Geddy’s impact on the Red Sox and baseball community. Geddy, thank you for everything!
It was an unbelievable week, filled with memories and laughs that will surely be brought up WAY too much at family gatherings. We can’t thank you all enough for coming this year and can’t wait to see you all at Fenway in May for the Reunion Game! We also want to thank everyone for your donations to RSF, even if it was forced by Corsi during Kangaroo Court. We fundraised over $45,000!!! This is an amazing feat and wouldn’t have been possible without each and every one of you!
Rest up, train hard, and we look forward to seeing you all again soon!

PREFIX Track Premiere: "The Kindest Hour" by Big Sir
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"The Kindest Hour" will appear right at the halfway mark on Big Sir's upcoming 11-track album, Before Gardens After Gardens, which makes me think it could be an important transitional song. Singer/composer Lisa Papineau (ME & LP, Air, M83) and bassist/composer Juan Alderete (The Mars Volta, Racer X) create this pretty, eerie (also pretty eerie) tune with help from Heather Lockie and her moody viola playing, which is contrasted by Alderete's smooth, clean bass. Also featuring Cedric Bixler Zavala (The Mars Volta) on drums and Matthew Embree (RX Bandits) on guest vocals.
Although subdued, Papineau's melodic singing is of major note here, as it adds dimension to her partner's muscle and, overall, fills out the otherwise sparse music. The voice and the instrument meet up here and there, eventually creating a watershed of sound that boils over as if you turned the stove off a second too late. The result is something like a cathartic overflow of warmth--thanks, in part, to the blanketing organ--ultimately faced with an icy wash of male-female vocals. "Hour," which you can stream below, is a compelling audio embodiment of feelings that could be as strongly expressed visually as they are here. Big Sir's Before Gardens After Gardens will be available Feb. 7 on Rodriguez Lopez Productions/Sargent House.
