Eri sobered, dropping his gleeful act. The weight of what he'd done came across him like something physical. His tone turned normal when he spoke again.

"What makes you think that you would be allowed in here the next time you show up?" Matthew growled, the pain in his body doubling after using such force to push Eri away and he was starting to breathe a little harder. He hated feeling so week when throwing the other fallen out would have been much easier on a normal day. "What you did to fall is none of my business. Unless that is what you're here for? After some unfortunate downtown Del Sol traffic, both Matthew and Otillie made it to the ballroom in one piece.

While Tillie was elated to be joined by Matthew, Matthw couldn't help but turn his nose up at the fact that he had returned to this gaudy building.

"You shouldn't scowl like that. You have too nice a face for it to stay contorted in such a manner." Tillie decided to be playful.

"Is that your idea of a joke?"

"I thought it might be prudent to lighten the mood. This doesn't have to be unpleasant after all."

"Unless…" Tillie paused.

"What?"

"Well, the issue isn't that you aren't much of a dancer after all, is it?"

"Now I know you're joking."

"You've made quite an effort to avoid cotilion, so forgive me for thinking—"

"I think you'll find I'm a better dancer than anyone stumbling around that ballroom."

"That remains to be seen, but if true, I look forward to witnessing it." Her coy smile contorted into a sly smirk.

He knew she was playing him, but Matthew didn't like to be underestimated.

When the two had made it up to the practice room, Matthew found his previous words proven true.

A mess of their peers were scattered about the room, practicing dance moves to the waltz Ms. Goth had put on for them. Their moves clumsy, unrefined.

"Unsightly." Matthew scoffed as he looked on at the display.

"You shouldn't be so harsh. If you look at them closely, there's still a human connection there that has a romanticism to it even through the crudeness of their dancing."

He hated to admit it, but when he did look closely, he could see exactly what she meant. An intimate closeness, a softness between some of the couples. But there was no telling whether that was due to their personal efforts or from fostering of a prexisting relationship.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert part 2

Colbert: Welcome back. We're talking with Phil Cole of Phillip and Cole's Variety Team. I can't help noticing Phil that you're wearing a tuxedo. Is that because of the serious nature of this appearance?

PBC: Not really, Stephen, this is from my wife's latest bridal collection. My wife is Sharon Cox-Cole, CEO of Shacocouture, Shaco Resorts, Shaco Swimwear, Sharon Cole Designs, et cetera. This is no ordinary tuxedo either. The vest is bullet proof, mmmmmp, the bowtie has an emergency transmitter in it. On the back of the belt are 2 strips of beef jerky, there are 4 buttons on each sleeve. The last one up is a breath mint. The shoes are lined with rubber, to resist up to a 1500 volt shock.

Colbert: So it's the full James Bond outfit?

PBC: It would be...if we could get around the copyright laws...mmmmmp.

Colbert: Are you feeling alright, Phil?

PBC: Talking...aggravates my breathing trouble.

Colbert: Now Phil, you just completed producing and acting in 4 movies, is that right?

PBC: It certainly is. The first one is called North to Alaska. It will be in theaters everywhere August 29.

Colbert: Do you have a clip?

PBC: Yes we do. It's a...well, some of the people in the movie will be on your show, LORD willing, closer to the film's release. They'll have great clips, but since I'm here we decided to show a clip with me in it. I'm only in 2 scenes in this one and they're the 2 most boring scenes in the movie. So this is a small clip. I'm playing the foreman of a lumberjack team. I'm trying to persuade former employee Sam McCord, played by Duane, the Rock, Johnson, to compete in our tree climbing race. That's all you need to know.

Colbert: What's your character's name?

PBC: Phil Cole.

Colbert: Ha ha...

PBC: Why create a name for 2 scenes?

Colbert: Roll the film.

(Film starts.)

McCord: What happened to your leg?

PBC: These new men, amateurs; as soon as the branch is loose they knock it down and let it fall wherever. We fired that man but the rest are just as bad. Doc says I'll be walking on it soon though.

McCord: It takes more than that to keep you down, Mr. Cole.

PBC: That's what I always liked about you, more respectful than you need to be. You know, after lunch we're having a tree race. I'd like it if you were on our team.

McCord: It's been 3 years.

PBC: You're still better than anyone we've got. Those DeRoches are tough. We haven't beaten them at anything since you left.

(Film ends.)

Colbert: You're right, kind of dull.

PBC: Yes, but the movie isn't. That's a terrific race, photo finish, but this was before a photo could help. The movie also has 3 fight scenes, one shootout. We had a great stunt crew led by Richard Epper. I think he's the best in the business right now.

Colbert: Anything else.

PBC: The cast is solid: Johnson, Matthw McConaghey, Haley Pine and Justin Bieber. He did the soundtrack too.

Colbert: Can Bieber act?

PBC: I am confident that after these 4 films he will be much in demand.

Colbert: Did you get along with everybody?

PBC: There is not one person involved in any of the 4 movies that I wouldn't be willing to work with again.

Colbert: And...when do you think the next of the 4 will appear?

PBC: It could be as early as January. We'll see.

Colbert: It's time for another break. Don't go away.

The Epiphany

Isaiah 60: 1-6

This is Isaiah writing after the exile of the Jews in Babylon.

Psalm 72

The Christians saw this ancient Jewish Psalm pointing to the visit of the Wise men .

Ephesians 3: 2-3a, 5-6

This letter points to the expansion of Jesus’ message to the Gentiles.

Matthw 2: 1-2

This is the only Gospel that relates the story of the visit of the Magi.

Happy New Year.  I pray and hope that you will experience many blessings and graces this new year.  I am grateful that you join me in these reflectioms.

I love the work of the prophet Isaiah.  Today he is rejoicing with the “chosen people” because of their return from a long exile in Babylon.  Christians see in Isaiah’s words a prediction of the eventual coming of foreign nations to praise and accept Jesus.  They also see Isaiah pointing to the Magi.  That may not have been his intention but Isaiah was looking to a broader and more expansive view of the faith of the chosen people as expressed through the temple in Jerusalem.  In the eyes of the early Christians that expansive view of Christ’s life and message is expressed in this beautiful feast.  Our Orthodox brothers and sisters celebrate Christmas on January 6.

King Herod, the Roman representative in Jesus’ day, was committed to power and saw in the three foreign visitors from the East and their questions, a threat to his leadership.  Herod, we are told, was greatly “troubled” by the visitors’ question, “Where is the new born king of the Jews?”  Even the chief priests and religious leaders knew the Bible’s prediction about Bethlehem and a new shepherd ruler. 

From the beginning of time people with power often do dangerous things to maintain their grip.  Herod pretends interest, but we know his motive for the return of the Magi saying so he could “do him homage.”  When he was foiled by the Magi, he turned to the massacre of children to get his way.

Migrant children today face deportation and separation from their families.  And I am sure you recall that Herod’s search for the child led to Jesus’ family’s exile into Egypt to protect him.  History repeats itself.

This feast of Epiphany (showing) speaks to the desire of our God to embrace all of humanity with our differences and traditions. The Roman King could not tolerate a threat to his power.  But the Gentiles from the East embraced the new life before them.  Today, many who claim to be Chrisitan, support policies that will deeply harm migrants and others desire to impose their version of Christianity on their neighbors.

A final thought.  The Magi, once they found the child did two things.  “…they prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts….” One commentator invites us to note what they did.   First homage and then gifts.  It is the first action that is the greatest gift of all.  It is an action open to all of us no matter our means or power.  The early church began to see it and the embrace of Christ for everyone, as the pattern this child would exhibit as he began his public ministry.

The Epiphany has much to teach us as we enter this new year and season in our nation.
