The only unofficial mail that Joe receives in his SVU pigeon hole are postcards from you. Today’s is of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Franisco, before that it was L.A and before that San Diego.
See you in Las Vegas! You’re written in your cursive scrawl. It arrives in an envelope with a hand drawn wedding invitation, something you’ve sketched on the back of a pink napkin. He cant help but laugh because if there’s anything you and Mike aren’t, it’s conventional.
It’s been six months since Duarte retired from the Gang Unit, he’d taken his Mustang and you on the road trip that you had always talked about. Joe’s got a drawer full of postcards from the two of you, he can’t explain how much each and everyone means to him. What the three of you had been through had created a bond that was forged in fire and blood, a connection that stretches over the distance.
He takes his pen and ticks yes on the RSVP section of the invitation before snapping a picture and sending it to you. You respond with a heart emoji almost immediately and Joe books his plane ticket the next day.
***
When Joe arrives in Las Vegas, it’s you that’s waiting for him at the airport.
The three of you had gotten close in the aftermath of the investigation. He’d visited you and Duarte a handful of times before the two of you departed. You'd had stayed up most of the night shooting the shit, it had gotten deep at some points.
Joe had found himself discussing his life in Juárez, how he’d been recruited into a gang, send to Fortworth to perform a hit, that he’d run away to New York when he couldn’t do it. He’d told you both his secrets and in turn you’d shared yours. You’ve both lived in the darkness, endured it the same way he had. It makes the difference being around people understand what it’s like to carry that.
"Mike’s picking up the marriage licence." You tell him at the airport.
You look good, healthy. You move with a confidence he isn’t used to seeing in you, you’re more relaxed, more grounded these days.
When the three of you sit down for dinner Joe notices that Mike seems to smile a lot more, he laughs with his whole body instead of that wry, suppressed chuckle. He realises he’s seeing the man that Mrs Evaristo talked about, the one that was happy, in love.
The place you’ve chosen to get married is the Glass Gardens Chapel, a stunning indoor themed venue with plush living trees lining the aisle and a glass ceiling that resembles the sky. It’s beautiful, Joe has never seen anything like it.
A smirk plays across Mike’s features when he sees Joe’s reaction.
“Did you think we’d be getting married by Elvis?” He teases the other man as he adjusts the cuffs of his suit jacket.
“It is a Vegas wedding.” Joe shoots back before taking up his position alongside Mike, his hands clasped in front of him.
Mike clears his throat as they wait for the music to begin.
“Thank you for including me in this.” Joe says, straightening his spine. “It means a lot to me that you asked me to be a part of it.”
Mike inclines his head towards Joe.
“You helped make this happen.” Mike says quietly. “That night I was planning to run, you were right. We would have spent the rest of our lives looking over our shoulders, it would have killed her. Now she’s free and I don’t think I’ve ever seen her as happy as she is today.”
“Give it a few more minutes and I’m sure that’ll change.” Joe teases before he tilts his head towards the entrance.
The music starts to play, and Joe recognises the song ‘Home’ by the Magnetic Zeroes. It’s perfect, he thinks as you appear in the doorway.
Absolutely perfect.

So I cant write in a linear fashion so heres a quick draft of when the oc!child character meets gabriel in my SPN fanfic. ENJOY
~~
It had been almost a month since Emmy Parker joined the Winchesters, and she was loving every second of it.
Her whole life she’d felt, well, alone. Her parents only spoke to her if it involved hunting, anything else, and the eleven year old was on her own. No tucking in at bed time, no checking over homework, no family bonding. At family dinners, she was supposed to give reports on what she’d researched so far and any cases nearby, her parents beaming with pride when she would find valuable information. Yes, she missed her parents, of course she did. But she didn’t miss the fact that they cared more about hunting than about her.
Sam and Dean were different. They would talk with her about anything; movies, video games, music. You name it and one of them would start talking about it, or Sam would start looking it up. They did more than just hunt. Dean drove them all night to go see a late showing of the Fast and Furious movie, Sam would play soccer with her in the motel parking lots. They acted like a family, and she got to be a part of it. It seemed too good to be true, which is maybe why she hadn’t fully opened up yet with them. Still quiet and reserved, sparing only a few small smiles or a laugh under her hands. Still waiting for the other shoe to drop.
They had developed somewhat of a routine by now for when they would get a new case. First get a motel room and check in with Cas and Bobby. Sam always liked to call it a “homebase” for whatever town they were in, a safe spot to wait for them if anything went wrong. The brothers would make a game plan for the day with Castiel while Emmy did homework, she's not allowed to do anything regarding hunting until real world work is done. (And even though she wants to join in, Emmy’s kinda glad that hunting doesn't have to come first for her.) Then the boys fill her in on the plan and head out, always ending with the same lines, “Anything happens you call. Something strange happens, pray to Cas and he’ll get us to you. We’re here.” Sometimes, Emmy thinks Sam is trying to reassure himself with this. With them on a case, Em would go exploring the towns they visited, often finding herself at either the library for homework and (secret) research or in a park running around, often being asked to join in other kids' games. Sam noticed that she seemed to make friends wherever she went without even meaning to.
Emmy was in the exploratory phase of her day, wandering about the small town of Mattituck. She passed by the diner the four had breakfast in that morning and smiled. She’d recently taken to trying to get Cas to try food. He’d said it was unnecessary and the green eyed girl took that as a challenge, teasing him with Dean until the angel reluctantly ate a pancake. The shops were dreary, but had splashes of color from arrangements for the town's upcoming harvest festival, giving the town a warm glow. One collectables shop, two clothing stores in a row, oh hey a toy store, a bait and tackle shop. Same old, same old.
Towards the end of the street though, a flash of blue caught her eye. She walked a bit more swiftly than before and came to face a bookstore. The entirety of it was painted a french blue and had irises and snapdragons in front. Chapter & Verse, huh. She had told Sam earlier that she was hoping to find a bookstore in town, use some of the money she’d grabbed from her old house to find a new research book for Bobby as a thank you. Sam smiled and told her to keep her allowance. He slipped the kid a 20 and said to get a book for herself too. “A kids book, Em. Not a research book. And hey, you might just find one you like.”
Sam’s words echoed in her head as she opened the door and entered the store, a bell ringing above to signal the door. The inside was all mahogany, rows of shelves lined the walls, with books spilling off of every surface. Knicknacks, maps, and posters were scattered amongst piles of tediously stacked books. It was a disaster. It was perfect.
She looked around and found signs nailed to the walls pointing to the different locations of genres, like the ones they have in amusement parks. Following the signs she made her way over to the occult and religion section, much preferring to stick with what she knows first. The children’s sections always overwhelmed her. That there was so much she never read and had no clue where to even start.
Fingers brushing over books as she passed, Emmy found the occult section in the wayyyyy back of the store, as expected. What wasn’t expected was that it was just as filled as the rest of the shop. Usually places only had a few various tomes picked up over time, but this was an entire three shelving units filled to the brim.
Emmy pulled out a few that she knew she hadn’t seen at Bobby’s and sat on the floor, back against the shelves, and began to skim through the heaviest of the stack. She’d finished her homeschool work at the diner early that morning, leaving the entire rest of the day free. She found a section on skinwalkers and settled in. The quiet chaos of her surroundings was surprisingly comforting, like there was nowhere else in the world that she could belong than on the floor reading that book.
“Now… What's a kid like you doing reading a book like that?”
A shorter man stood at the end of the aisle, leaning against the bookshelves with a bag of m&m’s. The first thing she noticed when she whipped her head around was his eyes, golden and shining. With the blonde hair and smirk plastered on his face he looked like he was up to something. How long had she been reading for?
“Research” she said shortly, turning her head back to the book. She didn’t like new people and didn’t trust them either. Her parents' voice was still whispering in the back of her thoughts “Emily, if people know they could get hurt. It’s better to keep to yourself. No friends.”
“Research? Well then let me see if I can’t help you out.” The man pushed off the wall, the smirk still on his face, and turned towards the books. “What exactly are you looking for? Monsters to slay? A princess to rescue? A Sunday school teacher you want to impress?”
“I’m not supposed to talk to strangers.” She turned back to him.
“Well then it’s a good thing I own the bookstore.” His golden eyes narrowed as he looked down at her. Green eyes meeting gold. “I might just be the only one who can find their way around this place, although you did pretty good yourself.” He’s right, even with the signs the store seemed like a never ending maze.
She sat there, eyes still locked on him. What’s his angle? This guy owns a bookstore? She wasn’t going to be the first to look away.
Suddenly, at the roll of his eyes, the man leaned back against the bookshelf opposite her and slid down, joining her on the floor. His mouth now in a soft smile but his eyes stayed narrowed, curiosity evident in them. He stretched out one of his legs in front of him, his elbow resting on the raised knee of the other leg. “Skinwalkers, huh?” His honey colored eyes flicked down to the book in her lap. “Rare… but boring. Definitely boring.” He lifts up his hand and grabs a book from the shelf above without looking. “Hmm…” He looked thoughtfully at the cover before tossing it over to Emmy. “This should be more your speed.”
She leaned forward and caught the book with the tips of her fingers. Her green eyes rolled at the man as he snickered at her catch. The book was old, water marks staining the cream colored hardcover. It had no discernable title but the spine of the book was adorned in what looked like golden vines. After quickly glancing at the man, still looking at her curiously, she opened the yellowing pages of the book and started to skim through.
“It’s about angels.” This was a game changer. One comprehensive guide to the hierarchy of heaven and it even seemed to contain names. This could give them a leg up if the angels pull anything on them.
“Oh good you can read. I was worried you were going through the last book for the pictures.” Sarcasm dripped through his voice. “How old even are you? Eight?” He popped an m&m in his mouth.
Emmy couldn’t hold back her laugh, “HA! Eight? I’m not that small!”
“Could’ve fooled me short-stack.” The smirk was still on his face but not as severe. “But yes– angels. Maybe a bit more kid-friendly than whatcha got in your stack.”
“I wouldn’t be too sure about that.” The words flew out of her mouth before she could stop them. This random bookstore guy was already suspicious enough before he recommended a book on angels, she didn’t need to let on that they actually existed. And how did he even know it was there, he wasn't looking when he grabbed the book. How could he have known? Stop, she thought to herself. If she’d learned anything in her time with Sam and Dean so far, it’s that not everyone was out to get you. And what had this guy done that was so suspicious before? Offer to help her look for a book? Admit his store is kinda a disaster? It was a coincidence the book was on angels, and to be honest any adult would agree that angels are a much better topic for an eleven year old to be reading than skinwalkers.
“Yeah, not wrong about that, kid.” He looked sad, his eyes a bit unfocused as he stared off in thought.“I mean, if kids like you are looking up Skinwalkers and crap like that, we need some new guardian angels out there.” He laughed, even the smile on his face couldn’t hide the sadness in his eyes. There was definitely something strange about this guy, she couldn’t deny that, but he wasn’t a threat. He knew more than he let on, maybe he could help them?
“Well anyways-” The man clasped his hands together, the smirk back on his face and his golden eyes shining. “Thought it might help.”
“Thank you.” She meant it. They sat in silence for a moment.
“That book-” She nodded her head to the book she was reading before, now placed on the floor beside her, “Is for a friend. I’m not really supposed to be researching this stuff right now. My…well I’m supposed to look for stuff for me first, this after.”
“Well thank god. Someone had the sense to tell the literal child to stay away from monsters.”
“Hey, you thought I was eight before, what do you know about monsters?”
“More than you know, kid.” He said sharply. His eyes were narrowed and eyes bright as ever, the smirk wasn’t playful anymore. “Not around kids too much. Place like this isn’t the most kid friendly, even though its got a pretty kick-ass children's section. Little ones tend to get lost.”
They sat locked in a staring contest for a few moments at that. His eyes filled with mischief and warning, waiting to see how the kid would react. Her green eyes were wide and unyielding. He wasn’t going to hurt her, she wasn’t sure how she knew it but she did. Some gut feeling within her said he could be trusted. Suddenly, he laughed, his face lit up in a smile, “ You're something kid, that's for sure. You’re not gonna let anyone push you around. Good. Hold on to that.”
She felt a small smile creep on her face as he sat up, moving to sit criss-cross, “Now what about you?”
“What about me?”
“Come on kid, haven’t you had enough of the back and forth,” he joked. “A book for you! Not a research book, sorry. Can’t let you go out thinking that's your only choice for fun reading. Like I mentioned before, kick-ass children’s section.”
“I’ve only really read these types.” She gestured to the shelves around them. “I got recommended some by…some friends. And I read some at the last library we stopped at, but I don’t really know where to start.” The admission made her feel like a load was off her chest.
The man looked sad again, but still smiled softly at her. “I think I know one that might be just the thing.”
Suddenly, there was a book in his hands. That hadn’t been there before, had it? No, he must have pulled it out from somewhere, or had it on him before. He tossed it to her a bit more cautiously than the last book, changing his aim so that it basically fell right into her hands this go around.
“A Wrinkle in Time. A personal favorite of mine, but don’t let that sway you.”
She hesitated, turning over the book in her hands to glance at the blurb on the back.
“You think the things people made up in those monster books are nuts, just wait until you read this!” The man laughed, the light glinting in his eyes.
The bell signalling the door rang sweetly, and the pair sitting on the floor turned their heads towards the noise. “Whelp, duty calls!” The man said, picking himself off the floor. “Been waiting all day for this. You should head out, kid. Shop’s closing soon.”
Emmy got up from the floor, picking up the three books. It was only noon, why would the store close now? “How much for the books?”
“For you, kid? Free of charge.”
“W-what?”
“You heard me, enjoy. Expand your mind, or whatever.”
She looked up at him. He was shorter than Dean, much shorter than Sam, but to Emmy, everyone looked tall. The light from the ceiling made his hair look like it was glowing. And though he sounded annoyed, he was still smiling, his eyes still sad. She wanted to give him a hug.
“Thank you. Really.” She put all the gratitude that she felt in her voice then.
“I know, kid. I’ll see you around.”
And with that he was gone, disappeared behind the stacks. She turned to follow him, to ask what he meant, but it was as if he vanished into thin air. She heard the man who entered before wandering around nearby, grumbling about being lost.
Emmy placed the books in her backpack, and made her way out of the store, the journey seeming much shorter this time around. The signage must have been clearer on the way back. As she walked back down the street towards the motel, she thought of the bookstore owner. He knew something, and he wasn’t going to give it up that easily. He was guarded, like her. She liked his eyes. And there was something about him that felt… safe? It was the same way she felt about Sam that day they found her, like she could trust him. It scared her. Who was this guy? She didn’t even know his name! How did he seem to know so much but give up nothing at all? Why did he help her? Why was he sad? Maybe one day, they could come back here, and she would have the courage to ask this man what he knew. Maybe she could help him like he just helped her.
Then she was back in the parking lot of the motel, Sam was waiting outside the room for her with a smile.
“Hey! We finished up the case, –just got back five minutes ago. Dean and Cas are de-briefing, wanna play a quick game?” He kicked the soccer ball towards her. Emmy raced across the parking lot towards it, kicking the ball back towards Sam, who was moving to the other end of the lot. This was one of her favorite parts of being with the Winchesters, just spending time with others. Watching Sam point out where the imaginary goals were in the lot made her think of when she would play alone back at home. Kicking the ball against the side of the house as if it was another player.
“So, whatcha do today? I was about to go out and find you.” Sam called out after they each made a few goals, kicking the ball back towards her.
“Went exploring. Found a bookstore.” Even though it had been almost a month, Emmy wasn’t completely comfortable or open with anyone, much less the Winchesters at this point. Sam was the easiest to talk to though, and the most understanding.
“Did you find a book for Bobby?” The afternoon sun shone brightly behind him as they got into a rhythm of kicking the ball back and forth between them idly.
“Yep. Had a pretty cool chapter about skinwalkers in there.” Emmy didn’t miss the grimace that flashed across Sam's face. He thought she’d already researched enough about the supernatural for a lifetime, and was hoping she would take some more steps into acting like an eleven year old, not a hunter. Sam quickly replaced the worry on his face with a smile.
“Nice! I think he’ll really appreciate it.” He stopped the ball under his foot. “You know you don’t have to thank us all the time, right?”
“Huh?” Her green eyes met his hazel ones.
“You thank us all the time and you don’t need to. You’re a kid. We’re adults. We’re supposed to take care of you, it’s our job. Speaking for myself, I’m happy to look out for you, Em. I’m here, and you don’t need to thank me for it.”
She felt her eyes water and a lump form in her throat. Suddenly, she ran to Sam, wrapping her arms around his torso and hugging him. The hunter stared down at her in pleasant surprise, she hadn’t hugged anyone since that first day they found her. And it had been Sam she hugged that time too. He wrapped his arms around her and held her close. After a few moments, she pulled away and craned her neck to look up at him, “You are really tall.”
“Yeah? And you’re really short,” he laughed.
Dean and Cas took that moment to leave the motel room.
“Come on, kids!” Dean yelled as he swung his duffle bag over his shoulder, making his way across the lot towards them, “Time to get movin’! Car’s already packed.” As he passed by, the older hunter stopped to playfully shove Sam away and then ruffle Emmy’s hair. The two let out a chorus of, “Hey!” “What was that for?!” only for Dean to respond with a loud laugh towards the impala.
“I found a book too.” Emmy said, as they followed a bit behind Dean.
“Oh really? Which one?” Sam was trying to play it cool, but she could hear the excitement and curiosity in his voice at the mention that she picked out a book for herself instead of them for once.
“A Wrinkle in Time. Someone there recommended it to me.” She was still a little suspicious of bookstore guy, but she didn’t know enough to want to bother Sam about it.
“Really? That’s great! I haven’t read that one in years.” He looked back at her as they rounded to the doors of the impala, Dean waiting impatiently inside, “Made a friend at the bookstore?”
“Something like that.”
“Good. It’s good to have friends.” He smiled for a moment before getting into the passenger seat of the car, Emmy getting into the back seat behind him. Cas would meet them back at Bobby’s.
As the car pulled away, Emmy settled into the backseat, AC/DC playing over the speakers. She reached over to her backpack and pulled out the cream colored book. She looked over it, the gold designs on the spine shining brightly. It was very old, probably the oldest she’d ever held, the entire book being handbound together as if from centuries ago. Opening it, she saw something begin to slip out from the pages and opened to the page. Two pressed flowers, a freesia and a wildflower, were used as a bookmark. Looking closer, it was in the section about the archangels, marking the page for Gabriel.
Huh, Gabriel. That would be the name for her new friend.

The spiral galaxy next door
View at EarthSky Community Photos
Steven Bellavia in Mattituck, New York, shared this detailed image of the Andromeda galaxy: the closest spiral galaxy to our home galaxy, the Milky Way. It's only about 2.5 million light-years away. The Andromeda galaxy probably looks like our Milky Way in space. It's slightly bigger than our Milky Way, but similar in mass, a vast star island with dark lanes of dust and places where new stars are forming. Steven said he put together his last 2 years of data on this galaxy - a total of 57 hours - to create this composite image. He wrote: "The star-forming regions appear as small red 'knots' in and beyond the spiral arms. And the collections of young, hot blue stars appear as blue regions." Great work, Steven, thank you!

which of course puts us in mind of those five fish in particular
I found two examples of lightning strikes killing fishponds.
However, in both cases, it sounds like the lightning probably knocked out part of the electrical system cutting power to the air circulation pump, killing all the fish. By contrast:
Lightning once struck the pond five or six years ago, but it did not kill any fish and only broke two of their backs.
Electricity travels over the surface of the water, unlike fish, so they are mostly protected.
Has a worm ever gotten struck by lightning

Pastor Dr. John Bunyan Reeve (October 29, 1831 - January 24, 1916) was a Presbyterian minister and professor at Howard University. In 1871 he organized the department of theology at Howard.
He was born in Mattituck, New York. He attended district schools and worked on a farm as a young man. He was a member of the Shiloh Presbyterian church. He worked as a teacher at New Tower, Long Island when, in 1853, he enrolled at the New York Central College in a preparatory course for the seminary. He finished that program and entered the Union Theological Seminary. He was Union’s first African American student. He graduated and became a minister at the Third Presbytery in New York City.
He was ordained by the Fourth Presbytery and made pastor of the Lombard Street Central Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. He attended the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church and was appointed by the Home Missionary Committee to visit the American Southwest (then comprising states like Tennessee, Mississippi, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas) and work to organize African American churches. He was given a D.Div by Lincoln University. He was appointed to organize a theological department at Howard University and became a professor there. He resigned from Howard and in September was reinstalled as pastor at Lombard Street Central Presbyterian Church. He resigned as pastor in 1914 and served as pastor emeritus until his death.
He was a distinguished leader in the church. He was president of the Council of Colored Presbyterian Ministers and Elders in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.
He married Jemima E, who died in 1898. He was survived by two daughters. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Lieutenant Caroline Child is striking, that’s the first thought that Murphy has when she walks into Benson’s office. It also seems that McGrath has a type, the two of you have similar features, body type, height. Her hair is a little different, but he would bet his salary if he saw a picture of her from a couple of years ago the resemblance would be even closer.
“I don’t understand why I’m here.” She says after the introductions are made. She sits in the guest chair across from Benson while Murphy leans back against the wall and watches.
His intention is to observe the discussion, gather more intel. The more he looks into McGrath the worse it gets, the case they’re putting together is pretty solid, but they need to establish a pattern of misbehaviour otherwise the defence would play it off as ‘he said, she said’, which could significantly diminish their chances with the other charges.
“What I’m about to tell you is extremely sensitive.” Benson says quietly, her hands clasped in front of her on the desk. “I think when you hear it you’ll understand why you’re here.”
She tells your story, all of it. Everything from the way it started, the mentoring, the light touches to how you’ve spent the last three years of your life trapped in a situation you had no hope of getting out of. The longer it goes on, the more withdrawn Lieutenant Child becomes. Her fingers toy with the bottom of her blazer, her gaze lowering before she opens her mouth to speak.
“He told me about her. He threatened to do the same thing to me if I didn’t…”
She swallows hard and Murphy’s heart bleeds for this woman because he knows how this plays out. Everything in her demeanour screams survivor. The more he learns about McGrath the more intense his desire to wipe this scumbag off the face of the earth becomes. He worked in SVU for a while, he’s seen that the disaster radius doesn’t usually stop at the victim, it extends far beyond that tainting everything it touches.
“I was a Sergent working in Vice, I was studying for the Lieutenant’s exam when he started to show an interest. He was helpful initially but then…” She sucks in a shaky breath before she continues. Murphy sees the slight tremor in her hands, she clenches them into fists to hide it. “There was a retirement party at a bar for someone we worked with, Tommy had a little too much to drink, the next thing I know we’re in the bathroom and he’s…”
She stops, her knuckles turning white as she grips the fabric from the coat in her lap before she forces herself to release it, smoothing over the creases with her palm.
“I tried to stop him, but he put his hand over my mouth, told me about the last girl that turned him down, how he had buried her so deep that no one knew where she was. He got off on it, knowing he had all of the power.” Her lips purse together, Murphy can tell the words taste bitter on her tongue.  “He raped me that night, in the bathroom of that bar, whilst my friends and colleagues drank and danced on the other side of the door. Noone heard or saw a thing.”
It's horrifying, the thought that there were so many cops close by and not one of them was aware of what was happening in that bathroom. However, it’s a story he’s heard before. Rape can happen, any time, any place.
“It went on for a while after that.” Lieutenant Child continues. “He’d turn up at my apartment drunk at 3am in the morning, if we were at the same event, he’d treat it like foreplay before he’d take me back to his hotel room. It was always the same one, Room 210 at The Plaza, he liked to fuck me against the window, said he wanted everyone to know what a whore I was for him.”
The parallels are uncanny, even down to the room and the hotel. Murphy makes a note to review McGrath’s stays, how often he’d been booking that room, how many times he’s brought back a woman.
“When did it stop?” Benson asks gently.
“Three months later, he seemed to lose interest.” She tells them, a frown crossing over her features. “He was angrier towards the end, drinking more. I stopped resisting, he didn’t like that. The last time he said…” She pauses for a moment as she tries to recall the exact words McGrath used. “He said Nora would have kept fighting. He’d called me that name a few times when he was…”
She raises her eyes to the ceiling; Murphy can see the tears lining her lashes as she inhales sharply.
“It’s her, isn’t it?” She asks the two of them. “The woman, he buried. Her name was Nora?”
Murphy sighs before crossing his arms over his chest.
“Yea.” He tells her. “Yea it is.”
