'Kill Me If You Can' Book Review By Ron Fortier

KILL ME IF YOU CAN By Mickey Spillane and Max Allan Collins Titan Books 273 pgs

Once again writer Max Allan Collins has completed a Mike Hammer story left unfinished by the late Mickey Spillane. If you’re a Spillane fan, this is always a cause for celebration. Note, that this volume is divided into two sections. The first is the actual novella length, “Kill Me If You Can,” and the second is a bonus collection of several Spillane short stories.

Whereas the novella itself is a fun read, it is very formulaic and contains most of the iconic tropes most Hammer tales are known for. The murder victim is an old Hammer acquaintance. The list of suspects includes the usual group of mean, sadistic gangsters and lastly, there’s the drop-dead gorgeous femme fatale. A seductress who is both good and bad tempting our tough guy hero to ignore his instincts and just put out the lights. Now formulas are not inherently a bad thing. Every mystery series since Sherlock Holmes came on the scene has used them; from Nero Wolfe to James Bond. Formulas are those comfortable pieces we’ve come not only recognize but also appreciate when delving into the series’ latest entry. If you’re a bonafide fan, you’ll see the climax coming a mile away.

The enjoyable surprises arrive in the book’s second half and those short story gems. There are five total; several adapted from radio plays and two featuring Hammer. Of the five, the standouts are “The Punk,” a grim, honest look at dope addiction, and “Tonight My Love,” delivering P.I. Hammer as the knight in tarnished armor destined to rescue a certain damsel in distress. The last line will put a smile on your face.

“Kill Me If You Can” is another great addition to the completist wish list. For Spillane fans, it’s Christmas coming early this year.

9-  which minor character did you want to see more of? which major character do you wish there was less of?

i would have been so down to keep constance & verity around for a few more books. why are they with sebastian trent? do they believe in the cause or are they just getting paid? would they have been anti-overlord? what if they became raven’s friends? what would a girl’s night out with raven, c, and v look like? like COME ON. girls who are also assassins and friends?? the possibilities are endless here, people

on the flip side, i think i would have preferred if tom and penny didn’t just hop in at the end there. i feel like we know as an established fact that we have six characters who matter, and so whatever happened to tom and penny was never going to be permanent... ya know?

11-  talk about your favorite character. what you like about them, their line or scene you like the most, etc. gush about them!

reasons i, mitch, love dr. max nero, and think he is so cool and better than every other person in these books, by just a little bit i guess:

1. tailored outfits every day? big respect

2. the fact that he lives in an extremely high-risk business and yet keeps making best friends who keep his secrets for him and decide to help him out all the time! he would be like, an amazing amish person. he’d get everyone to help him raise barns whenever he wanted

3. “three months” “three months?” “since I felt the sun on my skin” <3

4. the fact that he says that line with such contentedness while also forcing several hundred teenagers to live in the sunless underground of a volcano all the time

5. he can and would kill the person he loves most for the greater good (which, notably, other characters are unable to do, including diabolus darkdoom)

6. he never is forced to apologize for hating cypher, and is the pettiest lil bitch about cypher, and cannot hold a conversation with him for more than 30 seconds at a time without losing his cool. what a dumbass

7. my main man who looks people “straight in the eye” all the time. eye contact is his primary superpower

8. he has always believed in raven. and even when she disappoints him, even when she makes the wrong choices, he has never stopped believing in her

9. refuses to speak to his dad for fifteen years over a blueprint and steals priceless art to piss him off

10. “it was the best of times, it was the worst of times...” 

11. goes shopping for otto and wing to make them look like normal people when infiltrating steve jobs’s business hq and acts as though he and otto look as though they could be related

12. “on your return, we will discuss the wisdom of allowing a student to join you on a mission like this”

13. pays people like ms. gonzales and professor pike and the contessa to work for him, who inevitably make his life HARDER because they keep doing nefarious things!!! but he believes in the liberal arts so he keeps giving them leeway to do stuff!!

14. is not afraid of telling the most powerful people on earth that he thinks they’re dumb and he’s firing them all

15. tried to kill a computer with a fire ax

16. has seen diabolus darkdoom’s penis (evidence: book six. “if you were any less of a man, i’d think you were compensating for something.” conclusion: nero does not think it’s anything to sneeze at, and ALSO diabolus likes big toys. is he deficient in some other way if his manhood is good to go? it’s unclear)

17. does not mind that wing would have to kill him if he were xiu mei’s murderer. very reasonable to get vengeance for your mom, y’know? he gets it

18. “i’m almost ashamed to admit it but i’ve wanted to do this since i was five years old”

19. punches stuff when he’s mad, but only when he’s with friends??? why

20. hugs raven after she kills anastasia because while it’s important to her that she kills the person who ruined her life, it would be incomplete without the support and comfort of the person who helped her learn to reclaim her life and live it again

21. keeps threatening to kill people but never does, cuz he’s an ole softie

22. gets nervous when his daughter, who is, btw, the most feared assassin in the world, the definition of “capable of looking after herself,” doesn’t call him before bedtime to check in

23. the kind of guy who will walk through new york’s sewers or sneak into government bases in colorado springs but then will also have tea with the prime minister 

24. does not like tchaikovsky at four in the morning

25. he thinks otto malpense is funny, which is in good taste

26. for all his reputation as a villain, the thing he’s known for is being a headmaster, and despite the fact that everyone thinks it’s corny and a waste of money (or that’s what they say), nero continually proves that through the power of education, teamwork, and a little well-executed kindness, he can do pretty much whatever he wants because, alone, he is nothing, but with his friends at his side, he is UNSTOPPABLE mwahahahahahahaha

Hey everyone,

So I received some very, very unfortunate news today. While work has slowed considerably, my husband and I were still able to pay the bills and keep things running. However, I have been informed that my insurance has denied all of my claims that they promised to cover. And, unfortunately, the bill they are expecting me to pay is more than we can handle while keeping the lights on.

Stories will be written on a first come, first serve basis. However, longer stories will take more time (think about 1000 words a day on average), so drabbles will likely come out a little bit faster. 

Cadence and other stories will continue on their usual schedule during this time.

WHAT I’LL WRITE

While my main fandom is Devil May Cry, I do write for a variety of others, including Final Fantasy 14, Final Fantasy 15, League of Legends, and Persona 3/4/5. I cannot do anything outside of these fandoms at this time, as I am unable to commit to the research needed to do it justice. 

I prefer to keep ratings between General and Mature. However, I will write E content for VergilxReader if requested, as that is the only character I have written an explicit work for. You can find an example of that here.  

As for pairings, I’ve written a variety of Reader stories for Vergil, Dante, V, and Nero. I do generally stick to fem!reader stories because it is what I have written the most. If you want to request something else, please let me know! I also write Dadgil, Brotherly relationships (Vergil&Dante, the Chocobros, Etc), and other familial or platonic relationships.

Flying Fox – Lurssen 136 meters yacht with swimming pool 12 meters long

The real peculiarity of this yacht’s swimming pool is its position with respect to the aft deck that houses it. The only one of its kind, it is 12 meters long and is placed in a transverse position with respect to the bridge. This is possible thanks to this mega-yacht mammoth dimensions: built-in 2019 by the manufacturer Lurssen, with its 136 meters in length by 22.5 in width it is rightly part of the special ranking of the largest yachts in the world. It can accommodate up to 36 people.

Among the various comforts, its pool is equipped with hydromassage jets and a transparent glass front panel that offers a unique view towards the horizon but which can become completely opaque with a simple touch of a button, in order to ensure maximum privacy.

Savannah – Feadship 83,5 meters yacht with swimming pool 

Built by Feadship and delivered in 2015, the Savannah yacht can accommodate up to 12 guests in six cabins and up to 24 crew members. It is 83.5 meters long and inside its guests enjoy, among various comforts, a luxurious spa, and a hammam. However, one of her jewels in its cap is the 9-meter swimming pool with a very particular and refined design. An example of this is the mosaic created on its backdrop. The outdoor spaces are also well-finished with a C-shaped sofa and a series of sun loungers.

Seven Sins – San Lorenzo 52 meters yacht with swimming pool

The swimming pool of this 52 meters Sanlorenzo series Steel is a real gem. It was designed to obtain maximum brightness and it is for this reason that both the bottom and the panels that surround it are in transparent glass. The effect enjoyed by the beach club below is spectacular. This pool is also equipped with night lighting for long and romantic baths in the moonlight. The Seven Sins yacht was launched in 2017 and can accommodate up to 10 guests in five cabins excellently served by a crew of 11 members. The interiors, starting with the large and elegant main hall, shine with natural light thanks to the generous use of windows distributed on all decks.

Madsummer – Lurssen 95 meters yacht with swimming pool

For a yacht the size of the Madsummer, its swimming pool could only be the highlight. Located aft of the main deck, it is 12 meters long and features an integrated Jacuzzi. Large sundecks are located on both sides of the pool and are protected by the glass to ensure maximum privacy. This yacht was built by builder Lurssen and entered service in 2019 and can accommodate up to 12 guests. With its 95 meters in length, the space dedicated to fitness and wellness is really a lot. It hosts a wide range of onboard facilities including a gym and a dedicated spa for beauty treatments and massages.

Alfa Nero – Oceanco 82 meters mega-yacht with swimming pool

The designer’s inventiveness of this superyacht knows no bounds and has had its maximum expression in designing its swimming pool. The latter is in fact a 7-meter long pool located aft of the main deck. Its great feature is that it can raise the bottom until it reaches the level of the bridge in order to become, when necessary, a dance floor or a helicopter landing pad. It is no coincidence that a large letter H is drawn on the bottom of the pool. Launched in 2007 by the builder Oceanco, Alfa Nero is an 82-meter mega-yacht that can accommodate up to 12 guests on board with a crew of up to 26 members.

Titania – Lurssen 72 meters yacht with swimming pool

This fantastic yacht has a large hydromassage pool with a swim-up bar positioned on her upper deck. The perfect place to relax after a whole day spent enjoying the myriad of water games that it has to offer. Titania offers guests a huge inflatable water park, including a trampoline, playground, and 13-meter inflatable slide, one of the largest superyachts slides ever built. For those who want a relaxing holiday instead, a beautician and a hairdresser are always available among the 21 crew members who can offer a range of treatments in a dedicated spa room. This 72-meter superyacht was launched in 2006 by Lurssen and can accommodate 12 guests.

Icon – Icon 67,5 meters yacht with swimming pool

Launched by Icon Yachts in 2010, this 67.5-meter superyacht underwent a complete refit in 2014. Among the various improvements, a new infinity pool embellished with glass elements on the front stands out on the stern of the main deck. The bottom was also made of glass to illuminate the beach club below. MY Icon can accommodate up to 12 guests and four of its seven cabins offer direct access to the beach club for added convenience. An additional Jacuzzi is located on the main deck.

Legend – 77 meters yacht with swimming pool 

This superyacht was converted from a former Soviet icebreaker. The Legend is an explorer yacht over 77 meters long and designed for cruises in the cold waters of northern Europe. For this reason, a fantastic thermal pool, fed by a waterfall, has been installed which has space for 16 people. Boasting an impressive range of 7,640 nautical miles, this yacht was refurbished in 2016 and can accommodate up to 26 guests in 13 cabins, with a crew of 19.

i hope you all appreciate this avatar because to find this picture of our lord and savior max nero’s namesake i had to look at a whole entire post on how emperor nero’s gay romance is proof that same sex marriage leads to incest and it was horrible

however according to that source sometime in the 600s CE  "Satan himself was jealous of the wicked Nero" so i think we can all agree that the aesthetic is correct
