“I want you to take this,” Dr. Kemp turns back to you, holding a spiral notebook with black and white cover, “and I want you to use it.”
You stare, uncertain as he crosses the room. Use it? How?
“You can write down your feelings, you can make lists for yourself, you can track the days…” he explains, “but I want you to put something in it every day. Can you do that for me?”
You look at the notebook as he holds it out. You slowly take it with both hands, lowering it to your lap as you run your thumbs up and down the cover. It’s brand new. You can smell the freshness of the paper.
“Can I draw in it?” You ask.
“Sure, if that’s what works for you,” he affirms, “that’s for you. You can bring it with you to our next appointment, but you don’t need to show me anything. It’s just there so you can record your moods and anything that might be a trigger for you.
“Oh,” you look up at him shyly, meeting his bold blue eyes for only a second before dropping your head.
“This is a safe place, alright? I want you to think of it like that. Everything within these walls stays between us. Our little secret.”
“Okay,” you hug the notebook to your chest.
“And I want you to set yourself a little goal every day. Nothing big, alright? It could be a shower, it could be reading a chapter of a book, it could be as simple as walking around the house,” he continues, “but you can’t stay in bed all the time. You gotta take care of yourself. You have to give yourself love and those things are the best sort of love.”
You nod and rock slightly, “yes, doctor. Are we… done now?”
“Are we?” He bends and crosses his arms over the back of the empty chair, “that’s up to you.”
“I… I think. I don’t wanna waste any more of your time.”
“Waste? No. See? Don’t talk about yourself like that. You didn’t waste my time, you enriched it,” he smiles, you see only a glimpse of how it brightens his features. “I think you should go home and get some rest. You came all the way here and you did a really good job.”
He pushes himself straight, “I’ll have my receptionist schedule a follow-up.”
“Thank you, doctor,” you stand and pick at the corner of the notebook.
“You let Andy take care of you too, huh? He’s worried,” he extends his arm, directing you to the door, “he’s a good friend of mine.”
“Uh, alright,” you murmur as he walks with you to the door. He rests his hand on the handle and you smell his cologne, rich but overwhelming.
“It was really nice meeting you,” he turns the handle slowly.
“You too,” you squeak.
“See ya around,” he opens the door, “and remember, take care of you.”
“Thanks,” you keep your chin down as you exit.
Andy sits in the waiting room at the edge of his seat. He grips his knees and stands swiftly as he sees you. He must’ve been waiting a very long time. That felt like it lasted forever. The tension in his forehead slackens as you approach.
“How was it, honey? You okay?” He asks, his tone slightly addled.
“Yes, er, maybe,” you answer, “I don’t know.”
“What’s that?” He taps the top of the notebook.
“Um, a journal.”
“Steve gave that to you?”
You nod.
“That’s very nice of him. Well, how about we stop and buy you some nice pens to write in it?”
“You don’t have to…”
“I have to grab a few things,” he interjects, “I kind of… fell behind. I haven’t been out of the house, you know? I couldn’t leave you, I was so worried.”
“Oh? What about work?” You wonder tremulously.
“I had some time banked, it’s really not a big deal, but I gotta grab some groceries and we can look at some cute pens…”
“Can’t… can’t you do it later?”
He doesn’t answer right away. He rubs his beard and exhales. “Well, I’d have to drop you off and then come all the way back–”
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” you blurt out as you hear his disappointment, “I’m sorry, no, we can go, I just… I’m tired, is all.”
“It’s okay, honey. We’ll try to be fast, how about that?”
You nod and hide behind your lashes. Your guilt flows over and chokes you tightly. He brought you all the way here and missed work and it’s all your fault. Because you’re broken and useless.
“I’ll… I’ll try to make dinner,” you suggest, “Dr. Kemp says I should set goals.”
“Alright, sounds good,” Andy softens, “we should get going before it’s too busy.”
🕊️
You sit in the car, fluttering through the blank pages as Andy drives. You should write about your appointment. Put down everything that Dr. Kemp said before you forget. That’s a good plan. He’s right, it’s easy to set small goals.
“Hey, uh, I uh, can I talk to you?” Andy turns down the music.
“Er sure,” you shrug.
“Right, um, I wasn’t sure when to– or how to– I don’t wanna upset you, you know that, right? That I wouldn’t hurt you?” He begins, fingers tapping on the steering wheel.
You blink and stare at the dashboard, “I know, Andy. You’ve… done a lot for me.”
“I wouldn’t put it like that. It’s not… I don’t consider it a task, but er, the other day, I wanted to say sorry,” he clears his throat, squirming in his seat, “I should’ve knocked.”
Your throat tightens and you sit back stiffly. Your whole body locks up as the memory enshrines you. The damp air, the hot water, him staring at you, at your naked body.
“No,” you utter, “no, I don’t want to talk about it.”
He’s quiet as he turns the wheel, “sorry, sweetie, like I said, I don’t want to upset you. I just want… I’m just sorry for bursting in like that. I never want you to feel unsafe. Especially with me.”
“I… don’t,” you sniff, “it was just… a mistake. Can we forget it?”
“Sure,” he accepts, “yeah, let’s just forget it.”
“Thanks,” you lean into the door, watching the traffic through the window.
Your body is covered in goosebumps. You feel like he’s seeing it all again. Just talking about it makes you feel exposed. What he must have thought about you. Hideous and gross.
“Here we are,” Andy says as the blinker clicks loudly.
He steers into a large lot and you peer up at the mall marquee. What are you doing here? You thought he was going to the grocery store?
“I got coupons for the place in here,” he explains as if reading your mind, “they just opened it, put it where the Target was.”
“Oh… I… never come here…”
“I think you’ll like it. They have everything– damn, not a lot of spots left. We’ll have to walk a bit.” He rolls into a space, “might be good for you to stretch your legs. We can always sit if you need to.”
You don’t argue. You feel bad enough. You won’t get in his way again.
“Sure.”
You get out and leave the notebook on the seat. Andy waits for you by the bumper and you follow him up the row of cars. You stop and wait to cross to the nearest entrance. The place is vast and makes your heart pound. There’s so many people coming and going through the many doors.
Inside, you feel a greater sense of doom. Shoppers brushing too close, teens speaking loudly in large groups, children screaming and mothers with strollers. Unthinkingly you grab onto Andy’s arm, keeping close to him.
“Hey,” he looks down at you as he leads you through the wide walkway.
“Just… don’t wanna get lost,” you cling to him tighter at the thought.
“That’s alright,” he smiles and looks around, “oh, hey…” He pulls you over to a shop window, “look at that.”
He points to the dress on the mannequin. It’s a nice shade of blue with the silhouette of birds patterned across it. Very pretty but you don’t wear dresses.
“Cute, huh?”
“Yeah.”
He stares, unmoving. You glance around. Where is the grocery store? You just want to leave this place.
“Come on,” he tugs you towards the entrance of the shop, “we can see if they have it in your size.”
“What? No. Andy. That’s okay. I don’t… I don’t need a dress.”
He stops just inside, “maybe, but do you want it?”
You chew your cheek, “I don’t know…”
“Look, you really don’t have that many clothes. I didn’t want to embarrass you but I spoke with Steve and he said… maybe it would be good to get you some new things. Like a refresh. Start new–”
“You said. You said we came to get groceries.”
“We did, honey, but I left this out. I was trying to surprise you. I thought– I thought it was a nice surprise.”
You see his expression fall. Oh no. You feel awful. You’re not trying to complain or be ungrateful, you just hate crowds and all these strangers.
“I… okay, it is nice. Andy,” you let go of him, “really, it’s so nice. No one ever… Amber always got me handmedowns, but I never…” you put your hands behind you and bounce on your toes, “I’m sorry.”
“No, it’s fine, I know it’s all very new. I wasn’t trying to upset you or scare you,” he says, “maybe we could just look online.”
It’s clear he’s disappointed, if not agitated. You feel rotten. You remind yourself of all that he’s done and every time, you just whine like a baby.
“No, we can look around…” you try to smile.
He gives you a thoughtful look then peeks around the shop, “alright… well, you wanna try the dress on?”
You wince. You typically didn’t try things on at the thrift shop. You just picked things that looked like they would fit. The idea of getting undressed here, even in a private stall, is scary. Don’t be a baby.
“Okay,” you acquiesce, “I could do that.”
“Great,” he says and claps his hands.
He spins on his heel and you trail him as he confidently weaves between the tables and other shoppers. He stops before the dresses hung behind the window and sifts through the hangers. He slips one of the blue ones off the rod and holds it up.
“I think this is your size? I’m not sure.”
“Looks like,” you mutter, “um, I’ll… try it.”
“We can look at a few other things,” he offers.
“Maybe after?”
“Alright,” he searches around and flags down one of the employees, “excuse me, she wants to try this one.”
“Wonderful,” the woman chimes and takes the hanger from him, “just the one?”
“For now,” Andy smiles.
“This way, sweetheart,” the woman says as she beckons you with her long acrylic nails.
You follow her and Andy brings up the rear. She takes you around the counter and through a doorway. A row of stalls line the wall and she unlocks one with a key, hanging the dress inside. She steps back and leaves the door open for you.
“It’s all yours. Let me know if I can get you anything else. My name’s Isa.”
“Thanks,” you murmur mousily and she grins before strutting off.
“I’ll be out here,” Andy says as he sits on the bench.
You enter the changing room and close the door, certain to slide the bar through the loop. You turn and see yourself in the mirror. You flinch. You look down at your feet, refusing to acknowledge your reflection.
You undress then grab the dress. You pull down the zipper and shimmy it on. You strain to pull the zipper back up and fix the skirt so it hangs down properly. The skirt ends above your knees.
“Everything okay?” Andy calls from outside.
“Good,” you squeak and turn to face the door. You grab the side of the skirt, holding it firmly as you slide open the lock. You open the door reluctantly and reveal yourself. You clutch the other seam, “I think it’s a bit short.”
Andy looks at you. His cheek twitches as he sits up and smiles, “really? Looks fine to me…” he stares, making you squirm, “looks really nice on you, dove.”
“I don’t know…”
He nods and bites his lower lip, “it’s whatever you want.”
There it is again. Disappointed. You look down. It’s not that short and it is pretty. You could put a sweater over it and maybe some leggings underneath.
“I’ll get it,” you raise your head, “thanks, Andy.”
“Of course,” he says brightly.
You retreat into the dressing room and change back into your own clothes. You slip the dress back onto the hanger and bring it out with you. He takes it from you and guides you back into the shop. He stops you at a rack of jewelry.
“Look,” he grabs a silver necklace with a bird charm, “it’ll go with the dress.”
“Oh, sure,” you agree. Whatever he wants, you’ll get. You’d hate to overstep and you don’t exactly have a good sense of style. “Very pretty.”
“Let’s just have a look around, you never know… maybe find some nice shoes too?”
You nod and let him lead the way. As you progress through the shop, he picks out more things; some skirts, a sweater, some shirts, more jewelry, even some belts. He has an armful by the time you approach the checkout. You wring your hands. That’s a whole lot of stuff.
“Someone’s birthday?” Isa asks as she greets you at the counter.
“Uh, no, just… shopping,” Andy answers, “she needed a few things.”
“A few?” Isa scoffs, “I wish I had a husband who would spoil me with just a few things.”
“Husband?” You blanch.
Andy chuckles, “she deserves it.”
You notice how he doesn’t correct her. Maybe he feels too awkward. Like you.
“Sir, would you like to buy one of our membership cards? It’ll get you twenty percent off today’s purchase.”
“Hmm, I don’t know,” he pulls out his wallet, “how much?”
“It’s twenty dollars annually, gets you ten percent off every purchase.”
“Not bad, sure, why not? We might be back.”
“Andy,” you say softly.
He ignores you as he gets his card free. You watch the total mount as Isa scans each item. Somehow, this doesn’t feel like a favour. It’s just another number to add to the tally of what you owe him.

Yuri, what do you think about the theory that the Clash happened because Clementia found out a dark secret about the Academy/ghouls and got offed as a result? Because it's been keeping me up at night and I NEED ANSWERS
edit: while I was writing this I went back to the intro so I could read the prophecy and noticed something in the Intro I think we all missed since I haven't seen anyone really talk about it. When naming the dorms, Luca obviously does not list Clemntia, but he also does not name Obscuary. When asked neither does Kaito, but I assume that is the seventh and "newest house of the current line up" he describes as "having no general students and even most ghoul students cannot join it... you cannot be assigned there by the Weighing of Souls." There is a rumor about "their captain being the one to-" and then he is cut off by Cornelius. Is that also related to the Clash? What is Ed rumored to have done?
Tumblr media
... huh. I should. I should probably get back on the reddit or look at world chat. Or maybe join a guild that's got more active people in it that aren't french or a discord because this is the first I have heard of this. I want to make a lengthy post here at some point about what we know about Clementia from the story + some trivia stuff I have noticed but none of it really helps beyond suggesting that it's 1) vaguely church/holy themed and 2) has some roman and greek influences. Neither of which assist us in figuring out what happened to them.
For my part, my brain keeps turning towards the fact they seem to be responsible for "exorcisms" and that the ghouls have "lately" been refusing to capture the anomalies and insist on killing them. Darkwick has a lot of anomalies in their care, and as we see in Book 4 it can create them as well. I was wondering if maybe Clementia's duties extended past exorcising anomolies, were they also responsible for their proper storage? To me I feel like the ghouls (specifically Taiga) have a reason for thinking it is best to kill the anomalies instead of taking them back for study. My reasoning for this is mostly that I can't see Tohma, who makes a point to be in good standing with the school, actively whoops a daisying every single mission he does "just because." Whatever happened with the Clash clearly caused a break in relations between the school and its ghouls, based of Taiga saying the spy among them is trying to "make us ghouls look bad" I think the general belief among one faction (let's call them Tohma's Faction since he was the first one to bring up the spy) is that whatever happened was not actually the ghouls's fault. Perhaps even that things were instigated on purpose.
That feels like a lot of word vomit, basically what I am trying to say is that I don't think the ghouls trust the school with the care of anomalies at the moment, and that an anomaly of some sort is what was responsible for what happened to Clementia more so than the school itself. Perhaps a very powerful demon? I sort of get the feeling that whatever happened to Clementia was not whatever the instigator (if one exists) intended, if for no other reason than it was the only dorm destroyed. There's a chance this person wanted all of the ghouls destroyed, the school seems to think that the prophecy they keep is about a ghoul but I'm not so sure. "The whisper of the new moon will lead the champion to the academy on the solitary isle. So long as the champion resides there, the world shall be sheltered from profound tragedy." I could just be overthinking things but that doesn't really sound like something meant to encourage someone to be a protector of something... it sounds like instructions for a cage. Like as long as a specific thing is contained on the island, then the world will be safe.
Of course none of my thoughts exclude the idea Clementia was destroyed for finding something out, but to me it seems less like a punishment and more like a preemptive strike. If that makes any sense?

Jane's Pets Chapter 99: Preparation
TWs in the tags
Previous
Masterlist
Next
You're surprised when Puppy picks up Jane's body, but then she goes upstairs and it makes sense. She probably doesn't want to take her eyes off of the body, out of fear that it will come back to life. That must be why she wanted to stay downstairs originally, but then she realized she could still watch the body upstairs, so now she's doing that.
Satisfied with your reading of her actions, you help Kitty to their feet and support them as you follow Puppy.
…You need to stop calling them by those names, even in your head. But what else can you call them? You add 'figure out what to call each other' to your messy mental list of first steps.
When you get upstairs, you find Jane's body lying on the ground and Puppy writing on the back of one of the coloring book pages that hasn't been drawn on yet. You aren't prepared for how happy the sight makes you. She feels safe enough to write! Already!
You help Kitty get seated on the couch. They immediately scoot away from you, so they've probably hit their limit with being touched today. Maybe they would've rather tried to climb the stairs themself… No, they were leaning on you, and they accepted your help getting to their feet. They just don't want to be touched more. Still, you should've asked.
"Sorry, I should've asked if you wanted help instead of assuming." You say.
"Hm? Oh, it's fine." They bounce their leg rapidly.
Puppy sets down her pencil and hands you the paper she was writing on.
A lot of the jewelry Master had me wear could be sold for pretty good money. She kept a lot of it in her void, but some are in my room. Some of the dresses too. I also think some of the weapons and furniture could be sold. It would need to be sold to someone who doesn't ask a lot of questions, of course, because Master stole most of this stuff. Master had me help her with some illegal activities, so I know who to go to.
"Oh! I didn't even think about selling stuff! Yeah, we want to start with as much money as possible, it'll probably take a while to get another source of income, if we can at all. I just sort of pictured us being homeless, but everything will be so much easier if we have money." You pass the note to Kitty so that they can read it too.
Puppy nods, a small smile on her face. You could shout for joy. When's the last time she smiled?
Kitty finishes reading and sets the paper down. "So… let's break it down. First we need to gather up the stuff we want to sell, unless it's furniture, then we'll just take note that we plan on selling it. We should probably figure out how much we expect to get, and how exactly we want to spend it, then we go meet Puppy's… criminal contact–"
Puppy starts shaking her head.
"Um… oh, were you thinking only you'd go?"
Puppy nods. You and Kitty share a skeptical look.
"Is that… safe?" You ask. You can't imagine going into a situation like that alone is safer than going with people.
Puppy nods.
"Are you sure?" Kitty's leg bounces faster.
Puppy nods more firmly. You don't have much space to argue, you don't know the people she wants to meet up with. It's completely possible that they would be more dangerous with strangers around.
"Well… after everything we've been through, I trust that you know how to keep yourself safe." You say. "If you change your mind, let us know."
Puppy nods. If you thought she didn't want you and Kitty to go for your sakes, you'd push more, but honestly, now that you think about it, you can't picture her prioritizing her own safety if you're there. You'd just be something else for her to worry about, and it's not like you could protect her if something went wrong, even if you were there.
Kitty frowns, but doesn't push the topic. "Okay, Puppy goes to meet her criminal contact alone while we wait here. Um… While we wait, we can start packing food and clothes and whatever else we want to take. We don't have suitcases or anything, but there are garbage bags in one of the kitchen cupboards, right?"
Puppy nods.
"So me and Bunny will get packed while we wait, and then you'll come back and do… whatever you do to sell stolen goods, then you can pack up, and then we can go to the nearest town, which you know the location of."
Puppy nods.
"What about after that?" You ask. "We'll just be carrying around trash bags of our stuff… Can we find a place to live quickly?" You literally have no idea, you’ve never gotten an apartment or anything.
“Well, we can stay in a hotel. How long we can do that will depend on how much money we can get from selling stuff. We can pick somewhere cheap, it's not like any hotel could be worse than staying in the basement with Jane."
You and Puppy nod in unison.
"And… then what?" You ask.
Kitty shrugs. "We try to get jobs, or get some sort of financial aid. Or we run out of money and end up living on the street. Either way, we'll be happier than we were here. But I think we should start planning that phase once we've found the hotel we want to stay at."
"Well… I guess that's it then. Let's start gathering the things we want to sell."
The three of you spend the next few hours figuring out what to sell. Clearing out the stuff in Puppy's room is the easiest (and will probably yield the most money), and going over the furniture in the house isn't much harder. Most of it will be able to be sold, and if the prices the three of you have been estimating are correct you'll end up with a significant sum. It'll probably be all in cash, so hopefully that won't be too suspicious…
You can't start thinking about that quite yet, though. You're still not done with step one. You need to go through the weapons to see what can be sold.
Right before the three of you head downstairs, Kitty suggests looking at the silverware, so you gather up any sellable silverware too. The task ends far too quickly.
"We don't have to sell any weapons, y'know." Kitty looks over the piles you've put together. "We don't have someone forcing us to do things anymore. If we're okay with not having that extra bit of money, we can just… not. We don't have to ever set foot in the basement again if we don't want to."
"Still… the more money we have, the easier things will be, and I… really want things to be easy. You guys don't have to help if you don't want to."
"I think I'll be fine with going into the basement one last time. I'll come with you, I just… it's good to remember we have choices now. That's all."
"Right, thank you. And you can always change your mind, we can come back up whenever we want. Puppy, are you coming?"
Puppy nods and picks up Jane's body again. She's… going to stop doing that eventually, right?
The three of you make one last descent into the basement. At least, you hope it's your last descent.
You're so used to this staircase signifying dread, and even knowing Jane is dead doesn't prevent those old feelings from creeping in. You push them away.
The basement is big. In your search, you find some rooms you've never even been in before. You try to avoid thinking about what those rooms might have been used for and just focus on finding weapons.
It would be faster if you split up, but the three of you stick close together anyway. Thankfully, Puppy eventually sets Jane's body down, which makes the search a bit easier, even if not having her body in your sight makes you a bit nervous. You just push that away, too.
Most of the weapons Jane kept in the basement instead of her void won't get a whole lot of cash, but some might. You assume a car battery is pretty expensive. A lot of the drugs could be expensive too, but most of them aren't well labeled so you just collect the few that are.
"It'll probably take a few trips to get everything upstairs." You say once you're done. The three of you have piled up all the things you want to sell near the stairs. "Unless we want to leave them down here and have the buyers get them?"
Kitty shakes their head. "That would cause more problems than it solves. Would we just send them down here to grab whatever they wanted? That feels… unsafe. And if we went down with them, we'd probably have to take even more trips. It's easier to just get it over with now… still your choice, of course."
You sigh. "Yeah, you're right. Are there any boxes we can put stuff in? We can't carry nearly as many knives at a time as we could jewelry or silverware."
"None that I saw. Maybe we could take out one of the drawers upstairs and put the weapons in that?"
"You're a genius! Okay, if we get a dresser drawer we'll probably be able to get everything up in one trip if we carry it together– except the car battery, we should probably take that up separately… So, let's carry the car battery up, then while we're upstairs get a dresser drawer, then bring it down here and get everything in it, then bring it up. Then we only have to make two trips, and we never have to come down here again afterward!"
"Perfect." Kitty goes over to pick up the car battery, and you quickly stop them.
"You probably shouldn't carry heavy things like this while your feet are still hurt." They've been getting pretty good at walking only on their heels, but you're afraid of them losing balance.
They scowl and storm up the stairs. It looks kind of silly because they're walking on their heels, but obviously they're upset. That's… weird. You pick up the battery and follow them up. Puppy isn't far behind.
When you get upstairs, you set down the battery in the living room and then go to look for Kitty. You find them in their room, dumping out a drawer of clothes.
"...you okay?"
"I'm fine. You and Puppy'll probably need to work together to carry this." They push the drawer towards you.
"Do you need a break? There's no rush to any of this."
"I said I'm fine!" They storm off again, back towards the basement.
Puppy takes one end of the drawer and you take the other. "Do you know what's bothering them?"
She shrugs. She has an idea, then– she would've just shook her head if she felt as clueless as you.
You and Puppy bring the drawer down the stairs. At first you're very careful to avoid scratching or banging the walls, but then you remember you don't care about damaging the house, and getting downstairs is a lot easier.
You and Puppy set the drawer down, and the three of you start filling it up. You're almost done– after this you can figure out what's going on with Kitty, and maybe discuss as a group what names you want to go by. You'd like to get Puppy to at least eat something before she leaves, too.
You're so wrapped up in planning what to do next as you fill the drawer that you don't notice Puppy silently crying until she collapses to the floor.

Romeo and Juliet Vikdecai AU
So I'm seriously considering making a full Romeo and Juliet AU. I was having breakfast with my roommate and he helped me fit in a few gaps that were missing crucial characters, which then snowballed to me being bale to complete fitting in the character list.
I'm tempted to turn this into a large fic or (more realistically considering my schedule) a series of small comics. If I turned it into a fic: it would be very long. I'd either have each chapter be each scene, or 5 chapters revolved around each act (longer to write). It'd be true to the original play to the best of my abilities. If I turned it into a comic: It'd be quite scattered and all over the place.
I may do a mix of both? Write the fic and draw complementary scenes to post here. I'm mostly trying to think about my college schedule and everything I have to write for my creative writing courses. (Maybe I could talk to my short fiction prof about this!)
Here's what I have so far:
Tumblr media
Missing characters: Zib, Wick, Lacy, Nina, Gracie, Zulie, Virgil, the pig farmers, rest of the band, Church, Kehoe, Ruby.
Not all of these missing characters need to be filled, and there's a few where I have an idea how to incorporate them (namely the band and Zulie, I have an idea that during the Act 1 Scene 5 party they could be there,) and there's a few that aren't relevant enough to truly be needed for this au (the pig farmers, Gracie, Church, Virgil.) In a perfect world I'd have a place for all of these characters and it would work out with no gaps, but this is a Romeo and Juliet Vikdecai AU. It was never meant to fit perfectly because obviously Tracy never wrote these characters with this sort of AU in mind..
Elaboration for why I cast other characters the way I did under the cut (LOTS OF WORDS):
Viktor as Romeo is... a little tricky. Same with Mordecai as Juliet.Obviously, they're not going to be changed fundamentally JUST to fit the au. I have the plan for Viktor to be more of a sad sack than a romantic, hence why Viktor's canon wife has been cast as the girl who rejected Romeo (also he's bisexual.) Viktor starts this AU in such a sad spot, but the hard part comes in when you remember that there is no war trauma. There is no PTSD. This is my biggest hurdle when writing most aus, not even just Vikdecai aus. (You should see the cowboy au!) Now Mordecai, I have a plan. He's very true to the Mordecai we see in canon, just without the Heller family (as they wouldn't exist here.) There's no Rose, no Esther, and no Mama Tzipporah. But when you think about it, that doesn't quite stop Mordecai from being the way he is! He's still this nerdy, rude, analytical twerp that Viktor grows attracted to. I am most excited to work out the party scene. Perhaps Mordecai catches Viktor's eye not because of his beauty, but because he's the 'brought a book to a club' trope. The other's can wait, why the hell is this guy reading at a party.
Atlas and Mitzi are the Montagues, because this idea revolves around Viktor being of the Montague house, but seeing how Mordecai is part of the Capulets in this AU, I felt the need for Atlas to be dead so it's more true to the canon story. It also saves me on writing Atlas, a character we don't know much about personality wise (we can only theorize and speculate.) Rocky as Mercutio WORKS TOO WELL. I know there are some people who would make this au with a RockyxMordecai focus (I hate that ship too much) BUT IT WOULDN'T WORK! ROCKY IS NO ROMEO, ROCKY IS A MERCUTIO. THE QUEEN MAB SPEECH PEOPLE! Freckle as Benvolio is just very funny to me, and very fitting with Rocky as Mercutio. I have ALWAYS read Benvolio as this nervous little guy following around Mercutio, and if I'm remembering this right Benvolio is good in a fight. This just works!!! Balthasar is Romeo's trusted friend, and the one who tells him of Juliet's "death." I didn't know where else to put Ivy, honestly, and this is the closest we'd get to 'Romeo's trusted friend.'
I don't know what to do about Lady Capulet? She's a very important character in the play, as she speaks with Juliet many times, but there is no canon character who would be Asa's wife, and I don't know if Asa even HAS a wife. Perhaps I could put Nina there, but that would be VERY awkward seeing how Rocky and Freckle are part of the other house. I may make an oc for that role? Someone stuck up and stiff to contrast Asa's dad vibes. THAT OR: since Juliet's gender swapped in this I could cut Lady Capulet altogether and have Asa be the one to come talk to Mordecai about the marriage and such. Might just do that... Mrs. Bapka as the nurse is an idea from my roommate that I love too much to not do. She wouldn't speak a word in english, obviously, and that can cause a lot of issues story-wise, but 1. who else would the nurse be, I'm struggling and 2. THE COMEDY OF IT ALL. And also-I like to think Mrs. Bapka does know Mordecai! He goes to visit Viktor and this tiny little grandma comes over without warning and they know each other! And she's a neutral party who could want the best for them both.
Dom as the Prince is purely because who else would go there, and the Prince is a character who keeps the peace. Almost like Dom is trying to keep the peace in St. Louis by putting an end to the criminal bootlegging? I think it's a good fit.
I think Serafine as Count Paris and Nico as Tybalt is the funniest option. I almost had those characters filled in as Wes and Fish (inspired by @melffen 's Beauty and the Beast fic having Wes be Gaston, and Count Paris is trying to marry Juliet, you can see where my thought process was) but then I realized,
Where do the savoys go
That doesn't QUITE fit the personalities I'm going for (works in the BatB au since Serafine's better as the witch! I loved the subtle casting of her as the with more than you'll ever know)
Wes and Fish as the two Capulet's who get into a fight at the start of the play is a much funnier outcome.
The Arbogasts as the clergy characters is too funny for me to not do. Originally I had the idea of Abelard as Friar Laurence, but I was hesitant due to 1. main couple is gay and 2. HELLFIRE, so I swapped him and Bobby when I remembered Friar John exists. Elsa is a good fit for the apothecary, since you know. Nurse. Quackenbush is a backup who's more like a stunt double just in case something goes wrong when writing her character.
Thank you for coming to my TEDtalk, if you have any ideas ANY AT ALL, please feel free to rb this with said ideas, or just come into my dms if you want to help me with this idea!

Hello! Do you have any series order recommendations for new evillious fans? Or rather, what kind of material to look through first? (i.e. music first then manga, etc.)
My usual series order recommendation is going to be release order (such as this list [here], which has songs, albums, novels, manga, etc listed by the year they came out), though as a note, that list currently doesn't have mothy's E.A.T. songs on there yet (I don't know if you're on mobile or not but [this page] contains all of my translation lists sorted out by medium). Release order is not perfect, mind you (like, there are times where mothy has released a song about a particular arc long after it was concluded, for example), but it is the simplest way to go without having to stress over whether you're seeing things in the "right" order or not.
Do not do chronological order. At least, not as your first time through. There are a lot of Youtube playlists that have the songs listed this way, I would recommend saving that for a second viewing.
As for which medium--it varies. I would say start with the music, especially mothy's early songs because in the early years of the series mothy was still trying to make them into self-contained stories and narratives in their own right. However, as he got more into writing, there have become more songs that don't make sense without broader context, or serve more as advertisements for novels, or are just there to be a snapshot of a particular moment in the story. So I would certainly not suggest you go through all 70(ish?) songs before doing anything else. In this particular case I would just suggest watching the ones you like or find interesting, especially if they have a nice PV. Don't worry too much if you're not completely understanding what's going on.
It's also worth pointing out that a lot of these songs are compiled onto albums--these albums usually contain booklets with little stories of their own. These...can be skipped, sometimes they get retconned even, but they have a neat mini-narrative of their own that gets referenced in other songs and novels, so I would advise reading those too.
The bulk of the actual narrative, characters, worldbuilding, etc, these are all in the novels (not the manga--there is manga, but it's generally either bonus content or an adaptation of an existing novel, and most of it can be skipped entirely). Unlike the songs, the novels should 100% be read in release order (so the Daughter of Evil series books first, then the Deadly Sins of Evil, then OSS, and so forth). This is not a situation where you pick the arc you're most interested in and start there, and you absolutely should not do chronological order here.
I mean--all that being said, you're not going to get graded on any of this, it isn't homework. Really, go through the series in whatever way you enjoy it. There may be some installments you aren't interested in, and that's fine. Maybe you're not into the songs, maybe you don't want to read the novels. It's just that when people complain about this series being confusing, it's usually because they've either A) skipped the books that explain everything, or B) jumped right to the most convoluted part of the story without bothering to familiarize themselves with any other part of it first.
TL;DR--Release order. Songs are good to start with to get interested in the series, novels are where most of the story is at, manga is usually just neat bonus stories or novel adaptations. They are generally interwoven with each other, but novels are the ones where you NEED to go in release order.

================================================
Steve was still deciding whether to tell Mac Eddie was a friend of his or not. He didn't want her to feel like that's what is getting her foot in the door because Steve knew that Eddie didn't work that way. Sure he might censor his words and emotions around kids, but he did try to treat people equally for the most part. Steve liked to think his upsetting the Munson Doctrine all those years ago had a hand in this. "Hey, Mac. If you still wanna head in, you can. Doesn't look like there is a timetable or anything" He smiles at his daughter, who stands up excitedly, but stops mid-step towards the door and beckons him down to her height.
"Dad, are there any girls in there?" She asked in an unsure whisper.
"In the quick glance I had, I didn't see any, but that doesn't mean there isn't or won't be any, but even if there isn't, you have something else in there. You've got an Eddie." He says with the most reassuring smile he can.
"That's just another boy", she scoffs and holds her book a bit tighter, eyes looking at the library's main entrance, protecting herself with annoyance from the fear.
"I mean, yes, he is a boy, numbers-wise a man, but I think you really should meet him before writing him off. Eddie is er…well…how can I put this…he's unique" Steve finally grabs the diplomatic word he was looking for.
She looks back at her Dad, "How do you know that?"
"There are many reasons, but mainly he's just been running around in there, roaring, with some kind of dragon head on because he thinks it makes him less scary to kids." Steve frowns and shakes his head. But Mac's eyes light up, and she smiles as she looks over at the door, "Could be worth a shot, right? You could hang around maybe? It's not like you’ve got much else going on", she says non chalantly, but Steve can read he's needed.
"Right." Steve nods, scooping up Corey by his arm again. Mac drops in behind him as he passes through the door. Eddie was still standing exactly how and where Steve had left him, a small welcoming but almost nervous smile on his face, with his dragon head tucked under his arm. Steve sees Eddie observe Corey first, who has not looked up at all to acknowledge him, and Steve guides him towards the nearest chair for him to sit in, revealing his Daughter behind him as he does. Eddie's face erupts in a big smile like he’d just identified one of his own.
"Eddie, this is Mac, I mean Mackenzie" Steve looks to Mac for reassurance he's using the correct name she likes to go by now. She nods, "Mackenzie, this is…."
Eddie bows deeply, "Eddie The Not So Banished, humbly at your service."
Mackenzie raises an eyebrow at Eddie and looks up at Steve, who mouths, "Told you," and she smiles in reply. Her grip loosens on her book as she looks Eddie over. Her eyes study his face most of all.
"Don't worry about the scars, sweetheart. They're old. They won't bite. I'm not that scary, promise" Eddie smiles, but Steve detects a slight disappointment in his eyes as he squeezes the dragon head.
"Oh no, it's not that," she says quickly, "Just the one here", she points at his jaw, "It looks like a dragon roaring."
"Wait, really?" Eddie says, reaching for his face. There is no falseness in his voice; he is genuinely surprised and walks over to the nearest door window to look at his reflection "Huh. I've had them for longer than you've been alive, and I never even noticed that." Eddie laughs, "Anyway, enough about me, let's get started on your new character, yeah? You can keep your character, but we'd have to strip it back to level one because of the nature of the campaign, but if you're still interested, I could introduce you to one of the parties, Zee. I mean…Mackenzie, sorry" Eddie waves his hand towards a bunch of nearly full tables behind him.
"Zee is fine", she smiles up at Eddie. Steve almost feels a little jealous as they exchange smiles and walk away from him. Eddie animatedly gesticulates with the dragon head in his hand, and Mac giggles. It had been a long time since Steve had made her laugh like that, but he let it go. It's nice just to see her smiling for a change. Steve grabs a D&D book and settles into the chair next to Corey.
"How's the game, son?" He tries.
The reply is a grunt, but the tone of it goes up at the end of it, so Steve decides to quit whilst he is ahead and read for a while.
Sometime later, someone lands dramatically in the chair on his other side.
"I think we finally found a match!" Eddie says wearily with a laugh, "She does not wanna let go of that Cleric. Not that I can blame her. A lot of effort has gone into that build. At least you won't have to buy any new accessories, though," Eddie says next to Steve as he lowers his book slightly to spy over the top of it.
Eddie's ringed hand points her out, and Steve taps his hand down, "Jesus Christ, Eddie, do not do that", he says in a hushed voice.
Eddie furrowed his brow, "I was just showing you where she was, man. Calm down", he laughed.
Steve makes a whispered, incorrect buzzer sound from behind his book at Eddie, "Wrong. Let me try and remember her words exactly last time…oh hang on a second…." Steve checks his watch, "Thought so" he reaches into his pocket and pulls out 10 dollars and nudges Corey, "Go hydrate. I'll keep hold of your game", he says, putting the game on pause with his thumb and putting it in his lap careful not to touch anything else. Then he returns to Eddie, who is now also behind the book, "I pointed her out to one of the Moms at school, and apparently that was so mortifying that she would have sold her soul to satan himself to just evaporate into the ether."
Eddie's eyes go wide, and he holds back a laugh.
"It's not funny, Eddie. It haunts me. I remember every word. It hurt like a bitch. Can you believe I'm an embarrassment now?"
"Oh, Steve…you think there was a time you weren't embarrassing?" Eddie teases
"Oh ha-ha, very funny. I'll have you know I was very cool once, not just cool. The coolest!" Steve whispers in annoyance, "You know this!"
"And look at you now, Harrington. Sitting in a library, a computer game in your lap, hiding behind a d&d book from a thirteen-year-old with the Freak of Hawkins. You still feeling pretty cool?" Eddie chuckles quietly.
Steve slumps with a defeated face, and Eddie looks at him again, "If it's worth anything. If I didn't know you, I'd think you were a pretty cool Dad. Do you see any other parents here?" Steve peeks over his book, looks around, holds it up again, and shakes his head at Eddie, "A lot of parents just don't have the time, you know, but even the ones that do, have no idea what a Cleric is let alone anything else." Eddie's smile widens as he tilts his head, "You did what you always do, Steve. You jumped into the abyss first. For the record, the games are weekly, and they last a few hours. If you wanna stay, you can. I'll even set you up a station out of sight, so you aren't cramping her style, but bring something to do, for god's sake."
"Oh…well, I only see her every two weeks. Does that mean she can't join?"
Eddie holds up an imaginary clipboard, "Ah, wouldn't you look at that. My memory sometimes, sheeeesh. It's every two weeks."
"You can just do that?" Steve says in amazement.
Eddie narrows his eyes at him with a slight frown and laughs, like he can't make out if Steve is teasing or not, "Yeah, I can do what I want. It's my company." He taps the embroidery on his polo shirt.
Steve reads it "Tremelo Tales."
"We do D&D, reading stories to kids, music lessons, parties, stuff like that. Then when we make enough profit, we can do that for free for the kids that need an outlet, you know. Like today"
"You have your own company? That's incredible, Eddie!"
"Like you could ever picture me working for anyone! I mean, it's not easy, and I have to pay through the nose or legal and accounting, but at least I haven't got to do it, and it keeps everything running smoothly. I'm pretty proud of it." And the happy whistful expression on his face only served to complement his words. He really was proud of it. Steve's eyes automatically look to his kids. "What are you up to these days?" Eddie asks.
"Well…er…" Steve stumbles over his words because he is unsure exactly how much he wants to reveal at this point. So he keeps to the partial truth, "I'm a coach. Sometimes private, sometimes I get contracted, you know?"
Steve had actually hit the jackpot playing the stock market and was busy living off the interest. He'd still got some shares locked up in a few companies, but he'd been told to hold tight on Apple because they were a few months from releasing the iPod, and a cell phone might be on the horizon. He did, however, coach, just not humans. He held dog training classes at his house. Everything from puppy to agility to behavioural problems. He loved it, and so did the kids.
A shadow moves over the book, and both Steve and Eddie look up to look at Mackenzie.
"Hey, honey," Steve said carefully to her unimpressed face and folded arms.
She looks between the two of them and hands a few sheets of paper to Eddie, "So I've put the Cleric to Level 1, but I also wanted to offer something else to the party, a rogue."
"Interesting…" Eddie draws the word out and looks up at Mackenzie.
Steve feels a little left out of the unspoken significance here.
"How much for a players handbook?" Pushing the book, he's holding between the character sheets and Eddie's face.
"Um, thirty bucks, or you know, whatever you can. Just take it over to Carl over there. He'll sort you out.” It was interesting, despite the unknown truth of the matter, Eddie hadn't made the assumption that Steve was still living a more than comfortable life.
Steve approaches a braced bespectacled boy who is repeatedly rolling a die and writing down the numbers. Steve eyes him suspiciously but then hands him the player's handbook, and the kid wordlessly writes out a receipt. Steve pays, takes his copy, and pockets it.
As Steve makes his way back to the kids and Eddie, he slows his pace to observe the exchange rather than interfere immediately.
Mackenzie was standing clutching her book of protection, Eddie holding a set of sheets in each hand, occasionally looking up at Mackenzie and talking. Nothing out of the ordinary there until there is a glimmer of something on Eddie's face. He looks…concerned? But then his big smile is switched back on, and it transfers across Mac's face too.
"You thinking of joining a game sometime?" Eddie laughs as Steve approaches, hugging his new book to his chest, which he immediately drops to his side at Eddie's teasing.
Steve shrugs, "I mean, I just got it because, as books go, it wasn't bad to while away the time with. I mean, if Mac...Kenzie were to run a game. I could be tempted, maybe." He smiles at his daughter.
Eddie raises his eyebrows at Mackenzie, and she sends him a simple shrug back. Another tiny sting of jealousy. They hadn't even known one another a day, and they had secret meanings for things and now silently communicating with one another.
"So these sheets look great. Is there anything else you want to go over?" Eddie asks kindly.
Mackenzie shakes her head.
"Well, alright then. See you in two weeks, Zee!" Eddie says with a little salute.
Mackenzie smiles back at him and walks towards the exit.
"Thanks a lot, Eddie. It was really good to see you. Maybe see you again in two weeks?" Steve asks with his own little shrug.
Eddie blinks up at him, "Oh I-"
Then there are several thuds, a meep sound from Mackenzie, and another huge thud.
Steve's eyes snapped to his daughter, who was crouched down trying to pick up her books, but another teen in the widest-leg jeans Steve had ever seen. All frayed where they'd been dragging along the floor, a black t-shirt with the sleeves completely hacked off and shoulder-length dirty blonde hair is busy apologising and frantically trying to help Mackenzie pick up her books.
"Aw, man, I'm like, totally sorry, I had my earphones in, and I totally didn't see you. I was in, like, a hurry to get these to Eddie. Are you, like, ok? I didn't hurt you, did I? I'm such a stupid oaf sometimes," the boy rattles out, piling up the papers and books in his arms. A big box of papers was on the floor beside him.
Mackenzie has stopped scrabbling for her books, lets the boy scrabble around for her, and stands up.
Once everything is together, he stands also, raises his head to Mackenzie, nearly drops the books again, and swallows nervously, "Er…here you go…um…your um books, man."
"Maybe you should look where you're going next time. Stop daydreaming and observe your surroundings!! What if I'd been a little kid, huh?" Mackenzie scolds him, one hand on her hip, as she takes her books back. Steve notes she doesn't snatch them.
"Jesus, Harrington. I didn't realise attitude could be hereditary," Eddie chuckles next to Steve.
The kid swiped his hand over his head to push his hair out of his face, and it ended up nervously rubbing the back of his neck as his other hand came forward in a handshake, "I'm really sorry, man. My name's M-"
She raises a hand to stop him, saying, "Ah, don't worry about it. It's..whatever", and walks out.
Steve's eyes go wide.
"Steve?" He hears Eddie's voice next to him, but his eyes slowly burn into the little skatepunk in front of him. Picking up the box of papers and heading to one of the tables.
"Who…is that?" Steve asks with a that so sharp, that if there had been any balloons around, they would have been decimated.
"Er…that's Morgan. He helps out sometimes." Eddie says cautiously before folding his arms and narrowing his eyes at Steve suspiciously, "Steve, are you ok? It was an accident. He didn't mean to do that. I'll have a word with him. He won't do it again. I'm sure" Steve detects the waiver of worry in Eddie's voice and shakes his head.
"It's not what he did that's the problem, Eddie. Listen, I gotta go, but um, great to see you." He mutters, punctuating with a weak two-fingered two-fingered salute, picks up Corey by his arm and quickly marches to catch up with Mackenzie.

so maybe you could give some examples of easter eggs in your fics for those of us who did not get them the first time we read?
You know what? I should have known this Ask was coming. :D
Sure, I can list a few that are on the top of my head. Safe bet it's not all of them (although feel free to add any into the comments if any of you remember any others) and I am not going to include links to the various fics (because I'd be writing this all day if I did). I'll put them under a link but spoilers, obviously!
The offended neighbor with the poodlemonkey the day baby Naoki sets the jumprope on fire and Natsiq bends up the turtleducks is the same woman who owned the monstrosity of the house that Mako buys for Meili and Tupilek.
Sayuri's husband Zu is the son of the two people that Nuo matchmakes when talking to Su the first time Nuo visits Zaofu - the Chongzhi daughter and the useless Ligao nephew. Zu's grandfather is the brother of Lady Chun and Lord Yun Ligao. When Zu talks about losing his virginity and having to run away with his pants down to escape his great-auntie discovering him, he's talking about Chun.
Zhi's husband Ping II is named for his grandfather. Ping I is the Ping that the Desert Lord books that Wu reads in Lord Moonpeaches' house refers to. (Ping's grandfather had to leave Ba Sing Se in a very big hurry - why he needed to is one of those family lore things that differs on each retelling but I imagine it had to do with gambling debts and possibly interfering with other people's wives. Eventually he makes his way to the Si Wong Desert and meets Ping's grandmother, who is a sandbender and settles down. Sort of.) Some years after making his way to the desert Ping I is doing business of sorts at the Misty Palms Oasis and meets up with the writer of the Desert Lord books who is there for research, and absolutely bullshits the woman up and down about his life as a Desert Lord. Which she then writes a very famous series of books about. The Avatarverse equivalent of the Bridgerton books.
In his diaries, before he is outed as being a published author, Wu refers to people reading "his" books and he is absolutely meaning one of the books he's written, not one that's been borrowed from his personal library.
The glassmaker Huan apprentices under is the same one who made the crystal fire goblets that Wu covets when visiting the Fire Nation Palace, and the one who provides the glassware for Wu and Qi's wedding.
The Sir Takeo the night guard that bows and winks at little Lozan at the Fire Nation palace is the same young combustionbender that Naoki takes under her wing at her bending school. (He will be the head of Firelord Lozan's personal guard, and Lozan will trust him with his life and the life of his son, Crown Prince Mako.)
It's a young Tupilek who escorts Amak from the harbor to the Bending Academy in Wolf Cove. They will recognize each other when they meet years later through Meili and San.
Yes, Miwa the majordomo at the Ember Island house marries the gardener she acknowledges is safe for her to have a relationship with (as opposed to Qi, who is NOT).
Bo Beifong, the next Avatar, is the son of Caiyin, who is the daughter of Bojing, who is the son of Amak and San.
Orchid's second husband, Prince Aryan, is a direct descendant of King Bumi, and their children are considered royalty.
In case it wasn't clear, Gun absolutely knows who Madame Zong is. And has, in fact, been in contact all those years, since she left the palace in Ba Sing Se. He also respects her wish not to be outed to Wu. (There's actually a very good reason for that, but I haven't written it yet.)
Ikki's Blueberry Spicehead is the same air bison calf she had the tea party with when she was a child, the one she said thought had a deep connection to her father.
As I said, there's probably more, but that's all that is coming into my head at the moment! More later if I remember them. Or, as I said, feel free to comment with ones I missed.

Public Library of Ruina - Yesod
I still dither a little about Yesod. He's either Information Technology, Information Services, or both. Both feels a little self-indulgent, but it's kind of what I want.
Information Technology is basically regular IT-- have you tried turning it off and back on again. The library doesn't add a huge amount to that-- more databases, a website, shitty civic budget, unpredictable public users. You're gonna replace a lot of keyboards. (You should probably take the ones where people rearranged the keys into swear words out of service. Or at least fix them first.)
Information Services is, at this point, extroverted IT. Back in the day, this was the department that specialized in "reference" questions-- the weird stuff. People would ask librarians for all sorts of weird facts in the pre-google days. It does still happen, but less and less every year as search engines become ubiquitous and the people who remember that was a thing slowly die off. Still, reference will never completely die. People are always going to come to libraries with weird questions; that's kind of the point.
So why am I calling it extroverted IT? Because that's the primary function. There's the fairly obvious part-- people sometimes need help searching the catalogue or reading e-books. But here's the less obvious part. Myrtle has a new laptop, but she's not sure how to do anything with it and her kids all live hours away. Who's she going to call? Who can help people learn how to use technology? Without many other options, the answer frequently is-- the library.
Think everyone has a cell phone? Ask a public librarian. We know there are still plenty of people without a phone or with a secondhand POS with no sim card. Curious what happens if someone can't remember their gmail password? If you're prepared to deal with a post-traumatic response, ask a public librarian. Have you ever tried to help someone with no available cell phone recover their google account? It would probably save a lot of time if we could just tell them at the start they're SOL. But maybe they can remember the password, and technically there's a reset function that might work in a few days if you're approved.... Fun times when you're dealing with an upset person who can barely type on a good day and has just lost a ton of personally valuable and literally valuable information, probably forever. Think 2-factor authentication is great? It sure is, if you have a second factor. We have a list of free email sites that don't require you to already have an email address or a cell phone. It's hella short. And we took one off cause it was too Russian. Protonmail is a good bet if you can remember passwords. Which is a significant if. Some people just can't. Which is OK if you can save them on your computer. Oh, you don't have one and you have to use public devices all the time? Well, write it down and hope it doesn't get stolen and that you can remember which one is which. (Have you already guessed that sometimes people ask librarians to remember their passwords for them?)
In short, the library also serves as a public IT department, for services and devices it has zero control over.
Whether he's internal or public IT support, Yesod is also going to snap. Though, he will also have access to an abnormality that can affect people outside the library, which is a nontrivial perk. He will use it exclusively on vendors. I am hoping some of his bullets bend space and time to successfully hit whatever asshats decided it was OK to build the entire backbone of library ebook lending on Adobe Fucking Digital Editions, an old ass program with literally zero support. It would seem impossible for them to still be shackled to it in the City, but it also seems impossible that we're still shackled to it now, so I'm pretty sure the ultimate capitalist dystopia couldn't let it die.
Hmm? My specialty? I'm a reference librarian. Why do you ask?

Gathering of the Greatest Gumshoes - Number 13
Welcome to A Gathering of the Greatest Gumshoes! During this month-long event, I’ll be counting my Top 31 Favorite Fictional Detectives, from movies, television, literature, video games, and more!
SLEUTH-OF-THE-DAY’S QUOTE: “Are you with me? You might even be way ahead of me.”
Number 13 is…Ellery Queen.
Tumblr media
So, I have to make a bit of a confession (maybe I should have done that with the previous pick, har har): I initially placed Ellery Queen a little further back in the ranks on this list. I won’t say exactly where, but as I worked on this countdown, and considered all the things I had to consider, I realized that he needed to be higher. Why? One simple reason above all the rest: anytime I bring up “classic murder mysteries” with people, Ellery Queen always seems to be one of the first characters I bring up. So, since he’s such an immediate presence in my mind with these matters, it only makes sense to give him higher placement.
Ellery Queen has one of the most interesting backgrounds of any fictional detective, because he actually wrote his own stories. What do I mean by this? Well, the character began as the creation of two men: Frederic Dannay and Manfred B. Lee. The two were cousins and close friends, as well as fellow writers, who loved mystery fiction. One year, the pair collaborated to jointly enter a detective novel competition. They came up with a fittingly “novel” idea: the story would be written under a pseudonym, and the pseudonym would be the main character of the story, giving the reader the impression this was the story of a real detective. Part of the reason this was done was that the pair felt the characters of such stories are better remembered than the actual creators, so making it seem like they were one and the same would make the stories sell better.
This turned to be quite a boon to the pair as time went on: not only could they take turns writing more Ellery Queen stories, to prevent either tiring out, but it made it very easy for other writers to take charge of things as the character’s popularity increased. It also allowed for something interesting to be added to Ellery as a character: much like Father Brown, Ellery is something of an “accidental detective,” as his actual vocation is being a mystery author. He uses his know-how in that field to help the police, when able (with one of the chief officers being his own father). This also meant that other writers could create completely unrelated stories the conceit that these were some of fictional Ellery’s real novels. In other words, the character effectively became the creators, and – vice-versa – the creators effectively became the character.
The original books were highly popular, not only because of this idea of a “real” detective telling the story, but because the Ellery Queen books used a particular gimmick to extraordinary effect: what is commonly referred to as “Fair Play Mystery.” The idea of the fair play mystery is that the reader can potentially to solve the story on their own, if they can pick upon the same clues as the detective and piece them together. While this idea exists in most great Whodunnits and other sorts of mysteries, the Ellery Queen novels used it in a very special way. This was the “Challenge to the Reader” concept: before the big reveal of who the villain was, why they did what they did, and how they managed to pull it off, Ellery Queen would break the fourth wall and ask the reader if THEY knew the answer, and might even offer a few possible solutions for the reader to pick from. This made the stories into not just gripping murder mysteries, but also into parlor games: you could see how many people who read the book were able to guess the end result before it happened!
This entire formula made Queen one of the most popular detectives in American fiction, and the character has been adapted on numerous occasions. There have, of course, been more Ellery Queen books in the years since he was first created (Ellery was invented all the way back in the late 1920s); I believe the most recently published was in 2005. There was also a popular radio program in the 1940s, which featured multiple people in the role of Queen over the years. Here, special celebrity guests would be brought on as “Ellery’s Armchair Detectives,” and before the climax of the story, they would be asked if they could guess the answer. The character has also been adapted to film and TV on multiple occasions, as well as in games and even comic books! My favorite incarnation was the mid-70s television series starring Jim Hutton (pictured here), and that seems to be the most popular version out there, beyond the books. As recently as 2016, there was a stage play based on the story “Calamity Town,” which seemed to do well.
Here's a challenge to YOU readers: how long do you think it will be before Ellery Queen truly disappears? I hope the day is no time soon.
Tomorrow, the countdown continues with Number 12!
CLUE: “There’s an old saying: ‘Don’t change anything. Ever.’”

Alexa's Favorite Games of 2023
If you've paid attention to my activity online then you've probably noticed that I really didn't play many games this year! I spent much more time reading books and watching movies than I did playing games. Despite that, I will still make this list because I did still manage to play Some Bangers! But also some trash!
2023 has been a year of change for me: mostly in minor and bad ways but with a couple of bigger, better ways. I'm hoping 2024 will be a year of further change in some major ways. Without getting into too much detail, my life feels like some things are in a do-or-die/now-or-never sort of situation and that is scary but also it'll make changes that are better than what I've got going on right now.
In 2024 I am hoping to get back to gaming a bit more. I want to return to checking out small Itchio projects that no one else has heard of but that I will scream about until other people play them too. I want to play more visual novels, too!! And I want 2024 to finally be the year that I really give a fighting game a solid chance because it is a genre I have always wanted to get into but have never found the right time or place or game or whatever for it work out.
If you would like to see a similar list about the books I read in 2023, you can see it here on Tumblr. If you would like to see a similar list about the movies I watched in 2023, you can see it here on Tumblr or over on Letterboxd.

Mémoire 0079
The "It's Not Nepotism If It's Genuinely Great" Award
I don't do ranked awards like everyone else but if I did this would be a strong contender for #1 and it's not just because I know some of the people that worked on it! I really really like the shape of this thing, with how it has you navigating pages like you're falling down a Wikipedia rabbit hole! It's such a fun concept and while I doubt it's the first or only to do it, it's done very well here! I love seeing how both sides frame the conflict and how they choose to write history their own way and how that leaves you to piece together What Happened. It's a game that has been stuck in my mind and kept me Thinking all throughout the year since I played it back in July and that is more than I can say about almost anything else on this list or that I even played this year!
Tumblr media
Assassin's Creed Valhalla
The "Why The Fuck Am I Still Playing This" Award
I am occasionally an Open World Sicko who likes big maps with lots of Meaningless Things to collect/do. Every so often I just need One Of These. I have played many and they are all terrible. The genre has had a largely negative effect on AAA games specifically and the video games community as a whole. And this has got to be one of the worst ones I've ever played. I will probably end up writing a "review" where I dump all my thoughts after I've finished it but here's some quick highlights: -it plays worse than AC Odyssey did -it looks worse than AC Odyssey did -England sucks ass -the main plot is so tedious and none of the writing is good and there is SO MUCH of it -Eivor is so fucking boring!! my gay ass should be fawning over her but I simply Do Not Care about because she has all the charisma and charm of a pile of rocks The Isle of Sky DLC(?) questline was the best bit so far but that might just be my Kassandra Bias coming in to play because it was nice to see her again and also for them to be willing to actually play with one of the things set up at the end of Odyssey! I have played for over 80 hours so far and feel like I am maybe halfway through. I fear I may be playing this game until the end of time.

Charm Studies
Best Game That Is Laser Targetted At Me, Specifically
Narrative Picross! Cute girls! Witches!! What's not to love. I adore this lil game. I feel like this is going onto the list of games that I will take any chance I can to yell about because I want more people to play it because it's just such a charming lil adorable thing. It's cute!! I love it!! Play it!!!
Tumblr media
Fortnite
The "I Participated in Capitalism and it felt Gross" Award
I started playing like a week and a half ago so I am still an absolute little baby. The first thing that happened when I launched the game for the first time was that it notified me that I had unlocked Radiohead lobby music. And then when I went into my first match it was utterly overwhelming with all the sound effects and shooting and dancing and constant quest progress updates and meters filling and things happening, meanwhile I was just trying to figure out what the buttons do because there's not really any tutorials and it was one of the most stressful 10 minutes of gaming of the entire year. I think the actual movement and shooting feels Fine and is just Good Enough because the actual good thing is playing this with other people. The shop is egregiously bad. The battlepass system is also horrific. We all know this. I spent eight dollars on the battlepass because the punk catgirl skin is cute. I hated how I felt when I did it. I will continue playing because fuckin whatever who gives a shit. I hope Epic Games crashes and burns but for the foreseeable future I will continue to have fun playing this with people. If you are a person who think it might be fun to play with me and see first-hand just how bad I am at video games, hit me up because that sounds like a fun time to me.

Bloodborne
Lady Maria Presents: The Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower Award for Best Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower
YES I played Bloodborne again this year, YES I will probably do it again in 2024. I finally beat Orphan of Kos!! The last time I played BB I smashed my head against Orphan for something like 10 or 12 hours and eventually gave up but this time I did it! I spent time grinding out as many blood vials as I could and making sure my weapon was as upgraded as was reasonable and then I beat Orphan of Kos in like 30 minutes of attempts!! What the fuck!! Easily one of the best feelings of triumph I've ever gotten in a Soulsborne game.

The Exit 8
The "What The Fuck Am I Doing Here" Award
I feel like I need to preface this by saying that I believe everyone; I take all y'alls word that this thing is incredible and amazing and everyone needs to play it ASAP without knowing anything about it because it is just incredible. I completely believe you all. But when I played this, I ran down a hallway for ten or fifteen minutes and nothing happen. I don't get it. I read every sign (as best I could, since it's mostly in Japanese anyway). I pressed every button on my keyboard. I tried to interact with the doors. I tried to interact with that guy that walks by. I found a sign that said to turn around if I see an anomaly. I don't know what an anomaly looks like and I can't tell if I've seen one. I ran down the hallway in one direction. Then I thought maybe I need to walk. Then I turned around and went the other way for a while. I don't get it. I can't get the game to work. I am too stupid to figure out the first puzzle(?) of the game. If I had a brain and could figure that out I bet this would be sick.

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin
Best Game to Fistbump Your Homies To
What a cool fuckin video game!! Proof that Final Fantasy can still be good in the year 2023. I kind of hate how much this game gets memed on with all the "here to kill CHAOS!!!" stuff and people laughing at the Sinatra needle drops and fistbumps and whatever because while, yes, that stuff is objectively funny when you see it in the game, I think the game then does a lot of work to make you take that shit seriously and attaches emotional weight to it all that works in a truly sincere and honest way that I think the memes make people completely ignore. Jokin' around on twitter or whatever is all fun and good but please remember to engage with games on their own and actually think about the thing you are playing! It feels like this game is going to go down in history as some big meme when it's probably one of the best Final Fantasies in quite a while and I think that is absolutely fucking tragic.
Tumblr media
Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous
Most Videogame
I never did write out a full review of this game and maybe I'll go back and do that at some point but basically it comes down to this: All the parts of this that are Pathfinder are atrocious tedious garbage and all the parts that are Wrath of the Righteous are wildly inconsistent in quality but the absolute best parts of it are barely better than mediocre. Pathfinder, as a system, is really only for the sickos who enjoy planning out their character and everything they will do at every level-up because the actual act of playing it and engagin with the combat is miserable. God bless the difficulty menu for letting me turn it down to the point of not having to give a shit about any of that. Also shoutouts to whoever at Owlbear said "hey maybe we shouldn't have the final dungeon suddenly bombard the player with negative levels and attribute damage" because that was a truly awful part of Kingmaker. Oh and the Crusade mode sure does suck ass, huh? I hope someday Owlbear makes a good video game. The thing in CRPGs that I love the most is meeting all the cool companions and hanging out with them and helping them solve their problems (or sometimes making them worse). And this game barely has that. There's like a dozen companions and I think I could name three or four of them and could only really tell you much about two of them Daeran and Arueshalae save this game from being completely devoid of anything good. Arueshalae is my sweet babygirl and Daeran is a twink in need of obliteration.
Tumblr media
Celeste: Strawberry Jam
Best Game I Didn't Actually Play
I am not a Celeste Enjoyer because I am not a Platformer Enjoyer but I did watch my friend Carrie play through this and it's a genuinely incredible thing to see!! I really strongly suggest people check this out (either first-hand or watching videos) because it's wild to see how much work the Celeste community put into this thing. Custom art, new music, wholly new mechanics, and it's all arranged by difficulty so you can start at the beginning and work your way up! And they even added in tutorials so you don't have to know what a Ceiling Pop or whatever is because they'll just teach it to you! And, anyway, Celeste's assist mode is robust and people should be willing to turn that stuff on just to content tourism their way through what I think is one of the most impressive community endeavors I've seen in quite a long time.

Final Fantasy VII
The "I Swear To God I'm Going To Finish It If It Kills Me" Award
I have started this game like eight different times in the past and it never clicked for me so I never got more than an hour or two into it but finally FINALLY this year it is working for me in terms of my brain but no in terms of my fucking computer!! I built a new computer very recently and when I reinstalled the game, the cloud save was empty! Every time I saved it told me it was syncing the save file but it was lying to me!! Luckily, I had my old computer around still and was able to find the save there, so my meagre amount of progress was not wiped out. But then! My DS4 was absolutely haunted! Everything was configured the same as the old computer, everything is set up the same, but all the button mapping was wrong and nothing I did fixed it! I had the controller unplugged for a couple days for unrelated reasons and then worked up the energy to troubleshoot this and when I plugged it in it Simply Worked! So now I am determined. I WILL play this game and I WILL finish it in 2024.

Tabletop Simulator
The "I'm Tired Of Writing This List But Want To Add This One Too" Award
I played quite a bit of Tabletop Sim this year and had a lot of fun doing it! I've never been able to really get into board games or tabletop games because of a lack of friends to play with but this year I got to check some stuff out and have had a lot of fun with it! Even just loading into one of those big board games with a trillion pieces is fun just to look around at all the lil 3d models and flip through the cards. A lovely game that has given me a lot of lovely memories.

Aemond is quite similar to Alicent in personality. They have both internalized the “duty above all” value, and both look down on those who prefer to do what they want instead of suffering by doing their duty. It’s possible that Aemond was written to be naive like Alicent as well. Alicent supposedly secretly still cares about Rhaenyra, but spends years turning her kids against Rhaenyra’s and has been plotting to usurp her since 1x05. Yet still, Alicent thinks that Rhaenyra will somehow still be safe if she is usurped by Aegon, given by her surprised expression when Otto wants to have Rhaenyra killed in 1x09.
Therefore, it’s possible that although Aemond agrees with usurping Rhaenyra, he does not realize or think that Rhaenyra and her kids will have to be killed, and therefore still desires to be friends with his nephews. Aemond is clever but he is still a child and maybe he had not realized the gravity of usurping Rhaenyra. So it may be possible that Aemond is just naive like his mother, in that respect. Maybe it isn’t a flaw of the writing after all.
Anon could be referring to what I said in this POST.
I agree that they are similar in the ways you listed, anon. I do not think that what we are seeing from them is neither real or excusable naivete. Or successful depictions of naivete.
1)
Usurpations mostly end with killing the competition. Because killing someone is a good way of making sure they aren’t going to reappear as a problem.
Any and all major aristocratic/royal people know this or they get to know this way after they become teens.
They learn their histories, they learn of the rises and falls of states and dynasties (which end mostly with the rulers’ and their families’ deaths) -- we see in episode 1 that Rhaenyra and Alicent read about Nymeria and in the last episode Alicent sends Rhaenyra a page form the same book. So we know that they had a history education of sorts. We know that they know that people kill each other for power. This is a feudal society, a pre”modern” world.
2)
If Alicent truly believes that the lords outside of the keep will want to kill Rhaenyra and if she really believes that Rhaenyra will have to kill her children to remove the options for the other lords and secure her own rule.....
Then as a thinking and so-educated person -- like how the writers are trying to get us to see Alicent as -- she should/would have immediately understood that the persons on the green side--inside the Keep--would want to and are willing to kill Rhaenyra to limit the options to just Alicent’s children.
So to claim that she doesn’t understand is disrespectful not only to her original character, but to human intelligence. Thus against her own intelligence, to emphasize the problem.
3)
Aemond is about 16 the age of majority for his society. He would be an "adult" by episode 8.
Westerosi 16 year olds are not exactly the same in "maturity" as a real, modern 16 year old because they are given much more power and responsibilities. We are also told he reads philosophy, yet he can't reason the most basic of things, like I just described?
And while he was a child in episode 6 and 7, he is old enough (12-13) to have known about some Westerosi lords' ancestors and their petty king wars where some kings and queens were definitely usurped and killed afterwards. The education of Rhaneyra and Alicent that I mention still applies to him. 12 year old boys aren't excluded, since these people so not look at 12 year old boys like we do. Remember, they become legal adults at 16.
Other than that, why would her kids, including Ameond -- after she has been telling them that they needed to usurp Rhaenyra to survive? Again, go back to episode 6 where screams into Aegon’s face that he is the “challenge, just by living and breathing”.
Aemond believed Alicent when she said to him that the lords will definitely force Rhaenyra to target them if we are to believe that Alicent told him what she told Aegon about challenges.
Why? Because a younger brother’s duty to his future king is to support him and deal with his enemies -- just as Daemon felt he must do for Viserys before the Great Council of 102 A.C. in the book. And again, they all plan to usurp Rhaenyra. Who they’d have to kill most likely.
Not just because the lords will definitely come after her, but because they are determined to go after her.
In All
The writers do not successfully separate and clarify whether it is Alicent’s envy of Rhaenyra’s willingness/ability to see and enact compromises and create space for her own autonomy & contentment, or if it is her fear for her kids that motivates Alicent. It is certainly about her feeling like she has more power, but it's muddled in the bad writing when these other two motivations haven't been properly shown or developed.
Because it can’t be both in terms of equal weight.
It can’t be both because once you add children into the murder game, nothing else matters more (or should if you claim yourself to be a responsible and caring parent of some level).
This is why Alicent and Aemond’s “naivete” and the claims of their want to be friendly with the blacks is not convincing and not real.

I just came across your blog and saw match-up reqs are open so hi I'd like to request a genshin match-up (platonic & romantic if it's alr, preferably male charas!) I'm 19 btw, she/her pronouns.
Personality:
My myers is inxj, enneagram is 5w4. Don't know if it's relevant, but my zodiac sign is aries. I'm driven and ambitious to an extent. I'm rather organized as well, everything that screams messy irks me (so I guess a little perfectionist too?). I like challenges, as I see it as an opportunity to test and improve myself. I guess that leads to me being kinda optimistic, but also realistic at the same time (??). I also like to try new things, deviating from what's usual. One of the traits that I value most to myself and others is dedication and loyalty. I also take promises seriously, I take no bs. Despite all of that though, I'm actually quiet and reserved. I try to maintain a calm demeanor so I can work on problems without stressing out much even if I'm quite literally dying on the inside.
Hobbies:
In my free time, I like to do physical exercises. Playing video games and watching some sort of horror/crime/mystery movie or show. I like writing as well (poems and proses in particular). Moon-gazing and stargazing are also on top of the list. Idk if it counts but I like to think... it's kinda weird, but I like to get inside my head and think...
Lastly, playing w/ dogs.
Ideal type:
I tend to gravitate towards people who are rather similar to me. Someone who values organization and time-efficiency bc I don't like to waste resources. I also like people who I can compete with in good spirits, and sees it as a way to improve themselves instead of to raise themselves above me (we should be equals). Maybe I can use an empath as well, sensitive to the other's feelings and mood. I don't mind if they're quiet or loud, just as long as they can respect and understand privacy and alone time (bc I need it a lot).
I guess that would be it. Thank you sm!
I found your match! Come to meet them, c'mon c'mon!
Tumblr media
I couldn't help but notice how Ayato kind of sticks with your personality and ideal type: he is an efficient man, with his own ambitions with the head on his shoulders, and knows to read people's emotions and moods, even the slightest shift wouldn't go unnoticed with this guy (it's actually scary of you think about it), and would immediately see whenever you are troubled or not and check on you, or if you need space just give it to you.
He isn't one to trumple you or see you as lesser in any way, despite his... Ways. ("oh... So you collect these", "mh, yeah, very nice" flashbacks. I mean- this bitch of a man), so of course he would truly like a good challenge.
He would admire your personality, since is quite similar to him as he too values loyalty above any other trait, as much as your dedication in what you do. Is truly admirable, as he would say.
He doesn't have any particular hobby on his own, as he is a person fully dedicated to his work and to his duty so trying your hobbies when he finds the time would please him (just don't complain if he spoils who the criminal is in the criminal/mistery books- he would do it just for fun or for challenge)
Plus he is a dog guy, so I don't know if that's a plus but just saying-
Hey! There's someone who wishes to know you! Let me introduce the two of you.
Tumblr media
Keqing is pretty much an ambitious person, who also like you sees things realistically too. She doesn't waste time, and isn't one to procrastinate either. But she also doesn't look at only her interests, of course: we all know Keqing is a softie. Is what makes her a great friend! Keqing has empathy, even with all her bluntness.
She would of course care about how you feel and what you need and also respect your time.
She is always one to look for improvement as well, be it in herself or society around her and doesn't beat around the bush in the matter either.
So, to sum everything up, I think that two people like you if teamed up might kick us, with all due humbleness.

17 for the choose violence ask game, please!
choose violence ask game!
17. there should be more of this type of fic/art
ah, i was thinking i wouldn't know how to answer this one haha but let's think! i could answer "more art of all sorts to my liking" but that's a bit boring innit haha
for fics..i don't read a lot so i don't know what's available out there but i suppose there isn't enough fun mystery mixed with romance? or maybe well done satire? some writing that relies on its readers to catch hidden humour? from the little i've seen writers try to be very clear and descriptive about everything, i'd like some intentional vagueness for a change. i would love to read one shots with fun unexpected twists at the end or something like that too
for art i'd love to see bolder brighter colours i guess. i am very picky when it comes to the portrayal of people in art - it's not so much about accuracy to the actor's appearance, it's the artist's idea of the character and it doesn't have to abide to any particular rules really. what i mean is i rarely like the way people draw faces, i find it either too soft or too harsh so yeah, something balanced in that regard. other than that comics! always fun even if they're heartbreaking, theyre is just something magical about the format. i also enjoy mock up cover photos for magazines or movie posters, you can really appreciate the creativity... characters wearing original outfits that fit their aesthetic..stuff like that idk there's so much fun art to be made
and when a fic has art to go with it?? like a picture book of sorts? i lose it, that's genius, i need more of that for sure
(ooh it'd be cool if ao3 had a section where people rec music that goes well with the fic so you can pick smth from the side, i know people have playlists for characters and stuff but you can still play it from somewhere else, the list thing though could be very handy)

Personal Update and Recommendation for Other Writers
So, first of all, sorry for how long it’s taking for updates. I’m a bit stuck on everything at the moment and I’m trying to find a way back into my rhythm. My job has changed my schedule multiple times, and will very likely do it again in the near future which completely disrupted my schedule. There’s been a lot of other stuff, but that’s been a major problem for me because I’m on 12 hour shifts now which means I’m basically working and sleeping the days I work.
I am still plugging away at all my stories, I promise. I’m just doing a lot of reading on writing craft in the hopes that I’ll find things to help me. I also might start working on one story at a time if I get into a decent flow. That way I might actually finish something lol.
-------------------------------
On to my recommendation for other writers. I found a book recently on craft that was by pure luck of another author mentioning it. Now, as far as I know it’s not on any recommended lists or ‘best of’ lists on craft books, but it freaking should be. After reading it I’m convinced other authors just assume you’ve read it already so they don’t explain what it talks about properly. It’s like it used to be a staple that didn’t need to be mentioned, but I really wish they would have. So for all of you looking for a new book to pick up.
GMC: Goal, Motivation, and Conflict by Debra Dixon
Seriously, it’s so simple I sort of understand why people assume you understand it but for some of us, shit just needs to be spelled out. Maybe it’s just me but I wanted to pass it along to anyone else struggling in case it helps them.

ooh...what books would you recommend then? i'm really curious what your taste is like
i should preface this with disclosing that i actually enjoyed Lapvona LMFAO. like, after i posted about it on here, i sat down and finished the whole thing in one go. 🫖 i gave it a 3.5 ⭐️ on literal!!!
actually, enjoyed isn’t the right word, but it is the simplest—i just didn’t hate it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ i didn’t hate it, and at times i thought i could see what ottessa was trying to do, but it’s just—it’s grotesque. like, every now and then i thought we were getting to the heart of some allegory for our modern day society (people suffering under the whims of the 1% who could literally make everyone’s life easier if they wanted to, but they don’t, bc they only care about themselves), but then Ottessa would emphasise that with the main character (who’s like, 13? 14?) having to rub grapes on his butthole (i am absolutely taming this down btw) and feed them to the servant girl (also 14), so. 🥹 it’s—yeah. 🥹 that is literally probably one of the mildest things about this book that i can mention and in the text it’s a humiliating, awful thing, but it’s still there. and throughout the whole book, the (very many) awful things are like that: there in vivid detail. and that’s why i say i would never recommend it—because it’s very much a story that people need to go into with their eyes wide-open for!!! i like ottessa’s writing, and it’s because of that and little quotes throughout the book that i can say “i liked this”—but i can’t guarantee that for anyone else, and i refuse to be responsible for someone’s choice to read it LOL.
there’s a quote I can’t stop thinking of from an interview that Ottessa gave her now-husband, Luke Goebel, which sort of perfectly encapsulates Ottessa’s writing in general—and is good foreshadowing for how that comes to a head in Lapvona.
People ask me why I find that stuff so interesting. Well, it is interesting. Disgust is an interesting response. It’s funny.
— Ottessa Moshfegh, Vanity is the Enemy: an interview with Ottessa Moshfegh, 2017
i could absolutely see Pandemic-Era Ottessa trapped at home writing Lapvona bc she finds it funny. 😭 like the immature Lord in the book, who finds it funny to watch a servant girl be fed butthole grapes. 😭 if i had to describe the book, it’s like… it’s like you’ve been invited to a dinner party, and you walk in, and someone is playing some self-proclaimed snuff film on one projector and Monty Python and the Holy Grail on another, overlapping, while they tell The Aristocrats to a room full of other guests who have nothing but rotting roast meat on their plates. that’s what the book is like.
Tumblr media
— Lapvona, page 22 (ebook version)
i can’t believe i talked so long about a book i literally said i would never recommend. 😭 i just have a lot of feelings about it leave me alone reeeeee. but ok let’s talk about books i’m currently reading that i would recommend, tho:
i’ve just started The Dragon Republic by R.F. Kuang! The Poppy War series has been fun!! i saw people make a lot of fuss about the violence in TPW but Rebecca’s writing style is quite… detached/she tells not shows through the entire book, so i do think that kind of deadens the horror (or it did for me, LOL, but considering what i just said about the bullshit in Lapvona, maybe don’t trust me). i liked it enough to finish the first book though and then go out and buy the next two, so i’d recommend it to anyone who likes war-time fantasies!!! bc war is a big aspect of the books so far, and tbh i presume the trilogy as a whole.
my copy of The Monster of Florence by Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi came today—i have literally wanted to read it for YEARS. it’d probably be a good read for anyone that likes investigative true crime. thomas harris apparently took inspo for hannibal from the Monster! which is actually how i learnt about this book—through the hannibal tv fandom lmfao. specifically the quote that actually put this book on my to-read-list has nothing to do with the murders its about, but is instead this:
Florentines are a famously closed people, considered by other Italians to be stiff, haughty, class-conscious, excessively formal, backward-looking, and fossilized by tradition[...] Deep inside, Florentines know they are more civilized than other Italians. They gave the world all that is fine and beautiful and they have done enough. Now they can shut their doors and turn inward, answerable to nobody.
Answerable to nobody…. urk. i lose my shit over the idea of enclosed societies. especially snobby-ass ones. imagine trying to break into society like that…. incredible, LOL. i’ll report back on if our intrepid american writer manages to do so (spoilers: he don’t, LOL).
okay okay what else. i’ve also got my grubby little mitts on a copy of The Book of Goose by Yiyun Li. it’s quite lovely so far! it’s about two french girls, best friends, and kind of how they seperate. in the same vein (female friendship throughout a lifetime) i’ve also recently gotten a copy of My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante, so I’m excited to rip into that.
recently i finished Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto—that was lovely. 🥺 I’ve been wanting to read it for a year or so, now, and it was so so worth it! I cried several times lmfao (but that might also be bc it and the short story with it hit a very specific set of emotional triggers for me LOL). now that we’re talking Japanese authors—earlier this year I read Strange Weather in Tokyo by Hiromi Kawakami and that was a lovely little book, too. i also want to read my copy of Lonely Castle in the Mirror by Mizuki Tsujimura before the year ends!!!
on the autobiographical scale, i literally have a copy of Jennette McCurdy’s I’m Glad My Mom Died next to my bed (i have a tower of books next to my bed actually sdlkfjsdlkfj i need to get some bookshelves 😭). i absolutely bought into the hype with it but i think it was worth it. 🥺 not an easy book, though!
this post probably makes me sound more of a reader than i actually am lmfao. im not. most of my reading is fanfiction (derogatory). 🥹

Title: The Last Graduate
Author: Julia Edge
Rating: 2/5 stars
So, in the vein of, "I have been warned that writers have 15-word attention spans," I decided to go ahead and start a new book called "The Last Graduate" -- which, it should be noted, will not be written by a single person and which will be a longer work than even the long book I just finished.
The question is: what do I want to write about? I mean, I want to write fiction but I've never actually tried to do that and I have no idea how it's done or what it involves. So my task is "getting started" without a fixed plan.
At first I wanted to write the kind of story I like to read. That is, I was going to read a bunch of speculative fiction and try to reverse-engineer the kind of story that felt closest to what I usually like, then write that. You know, hard SF, kind of, with political intrigue and a hint of the eerie, some element of risk and suspense without being constantly mired in the gloomy nightmare of constant war. You know, just an overview of the solar system post-accelerationist society, starting with the ruins of Easter Island and moving gradually outwards to the distant planets. The themes will be man's hubris, man's absurd isolation from each other and from society, man's struggle to find a stable footing when the ground beneath his feet is always changing, and the problem of reconciling violence with civilization.
But as I thought about this, I realized there were going to be two big problems. The first was that I have nothing to say about the setting. I have not even read the Handbook of the Known Solar System and its Satellites. I know some interesting facts about Jupiter but I have no idea how big Jupiter is in relation to Earth or how it compares to Earth's other planets. And I only know those facts because they've been handed to me on a silver platter, ready to be used in stories about future civilizations that resemble the present, so that I can be like "ah, the Jupiter atmosphere is so huge and thick that only a very few spacecraft could ever pass through it, and these few are enormously valuable for their ability to circumnavigate the gas giant quickly." So, while this is all nice and interesting, it doesn't feel like something a writer had to say.
The second problem is the one raised in Shannon Love's SSC comment: where do we look for plausible future technology? Do we go for sci-fi predictability, saying "that's the way they'll do it in the future, for the same kinds of reasons that we have?" Or do we do it all with gadgets of the author's own invention that are only "plausible" according to some complicated sense of our own? Like, if I'm writing a story about the far future, maybe I should just reference a long list of SF movies and books, from Flash Gordon to 2001 to Space Seed to Start Trek: The Next Generation to Star Trek: Deep Space 9 to Total Recall to The Fifth Element to various Battlestar Galacticas to whatever sci-fi movie is in theaters right now. If I'm writing about the far future, or even the fairly far future, the technology should simply be similar in concept and nature to what we have now, it should just be as advanced. I don't need to sit around thinking about the details of how we could move a person from one place to another millions of light years away -- I don't know, it should just be there, it's the sort of thing that people in the future do. They're not living in a bad sci-fi movie, they're living in a good sci-fi movie. You don't need to think about the technology of warp speed or suspended animation, you just need to think about how the society would deal with it.
So then I tried to answer the question "what do I like, speculative fiction-wise?." I said, okay, I like novelty as much as I like "predictability." And what is it that we get with novelty in speculative fiction?
Well, if you look back at a lot of SF, it has terrible covers. Just terrible. Lots of terrible, black and white art that looks like it was done by someone's dad, depicting a sort of retro-future that doesn't make sense. And, like, I'd rather get something that's a little bit wrong than something that makes perfect sense if it's 30, 40, 50 years old. You can't just, "look back on 2012 and make it look plausible," you can't do it. (In fact, I would go as far as to say that authors who try this are failures, unless they do it for the sake of humor -- there's a whole genre of depictions of the 1960s-1970s era future, complete with love-in parties and duck-and-cover drills.)
Specifically, what I want is SF that is plausible in a certain sense, that seems like it could've actually happened and has no glaring anachronisms. But has some sense of novelty, of excitement, some sense of suspense and mystery, and an element of fun.
And, so, what SF has this? Well, the Foundation series is good at it -- it's plausible, but it has a sense of mystery and weirdness. Which means the theme is "the world is weird and things are not what they seem." Like, you have a character named Daneel who is a robot, and he's the second person who talks to you in the story, and it's like, uh, what the fuck? (After you get over the awe of talking to a robot for the first time, you are struck by the total surreality of the situation: the guy is almost entirely dependent on his memory, and the only way he really seems to know anything is because he has the great advantage of a very short memory, and you think to yourself, yeah, I'm gonna have trouble with this guy, because we're gonna have this conversation a few times and in the later conversations, he's not gonna remember anything he's said the previous time, and my conversation with him the previous time isn't really gonna mean anything to him, all that was will just be gone from his memory, which isn't a very good way to think about anything, and you think to yourself, this is like having a conversation with a machine that's got a really short memory, it's strange, what's up with that)
The Foundation series has this, but it doesn't have a sense of mystery or suspense and so on. It has the sense of novelty in the form of "when will the robots win?" In a different SF story, this sense of novelty might be in the form of "is this all in the mind?" And I don't care if it's in the mind -- I don't care if it's literal or if it's metaphorical, so long as there's something that feels like it could literally be "in the mind." I want a novelty that feels in the spirit of Ubik. (Which I haven't read, by the way.)
On the other hand, The Last Graduate has this sense of novelty in the form of "when will the robots win?" It has the mystery of "when is the last man born," which I don't care about, but it also has the mystery of "when will our planets explode?" And it never answers these questions, and it feels like, yeah, this is a good thing to do, to ask these questions about something people care about, and not have the answers, and use the questions to introduce a lot of fear and anticipation and wistfulness, and it seems like this is something that SF can do, rather than the other thing, "have robots win."
And there are other things which are similar to The Last Graduate, like A Canticle for Leibowitz -- which is more like The Last Graduate than likes like Iain M Banks. (Because they both have a plausible future of the kind I talked about above, and then there is something weird in the story that changes the entire story, it's mysterious, and the novelty isn't "wow, there's a bunch of robots" but "wow, is this
