Fantastic idea. Let's give it a shot! I would love to see if a creator could and would be able to create a maxis-match classic Ballet Workout Set. Including two simple Tutu's one classic short the other one long. A classic leotard, wrap top, wrap skirt, ankle leg warmers as well as a pair of thigh high ones. All in classic ballet colors black, white and pink. ;) Nothing fancy! If the creator wants some examples what I mean I could provide pics. But that would be so dope! ❤️

#SSSWish I'm half Filipino, but I hardly see any Filipino content in the Sims Community. I would love to own a Maxis Match Barong or Maria Clara dress for formal events in the game. I think it would be a great way to add more representation in the game, especially when I know there are a handful of PilAms and Pinoy players. Thanks for hearing me out, and thanks for all the work you do to make this games playable. I really enjoy all your hard work!

#SSSWishlist hello! I would love if cc creators can consider making more patterns for Kimono/Yukata (traditional Japanese clothing). I find the in-game versions kinda bland, and there are not many floral Kimonos even though its commonly seen in Japanese festivals. Would appreciate if there's Japanese hairstyle cc with big flowerly accessory to pair with the Kimono too! Same for the male Yukatas, just not floral print maybe. If it's not too much, children's version is also appreciated!

For the SSS Wishlist, I would Love to see a set of three to four hairstyles, all with the same texture. Something like long hair down, a ponytail, and an updo, all with the same wavy or curly or straight texture, all with the same bangs or whatever. My wish is to have more swatches for the snowboard and skis. If there could be more LED designs, interesting designs and the swatches for kids for T-E boards. It would be great.

The other wish would be to have more Kimono designs in Maxis Match and/or recolors with more patterns. There are so many patterns that I have seen while looking at real life kimonos and there are so many patterns, styles and colors that are missing in the game.

This seems like a fun idea! What I have been wanting for ages (like since TS2 era ages) is a hair style that completely covers one eye, like Violet at the start of The Incredibles. Most of the peekaboo bangs hairs I've seen are a little *too* stylish and I mostly just want one where someone is clearly trying to cover up half their face with it.

I would love to see more horse poses with tack. Severinka’s horses are beautiful but it drives me crazy, posing sims on horseback with the illusion of tack (bridles, saddles, etc) I would love to see some Severinka shaped tack be made. Poses would be a bonus!

#SSSWish - I would love to see a someone put together clothing that accurately reflects the Starfleet uniforms seen on the television shows, "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (collar version), "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (colored shoulders) or the later movie uniforms (grey shoulders w/ colored undershirt). I've seen people asking for these uniforms for quite some time now, and I think, if done well, they could be a popular download. A separate chest combadge accessory would be nice too.

Hey there, that #SSSWish thing is a super cool idea! I do have a wish too - I would love to see the EL utility jumpsuit converted for male framed sims. It can be unlocked by creating an override and unchecking the frame restrictions in S4S, but then the body changes to a female frame. So if anybody out there could do that properly, I'd be extremely grateful :3

#SSSWish i've been looking all over for a version of a torc to use in my historical plays-- it's an old celtic type of necklace, made of iron, sort of twisted into a collar around the neck... i've seen sims 3 versions of one floating around, so if someone would even be so kind as to convert one of those to the sims 4 i would be so happy!!!

Hi, for the SSSWishList I would love it if someone were to either convert or create a more dainty engagement ring type ring for the masculine frame, kind of like the rings glitterberrysims has made for feminine frames, like her pearl antique ring for example. I’ve always wanted more pretty and delicate rings for my male sims but i can never find any that truly work with the masculine frame without most of the ring being absorbed by their fingers lol

#SSSWishlist i know i already saw some people here ask for more yukata/kimono swatches here and i would like the say i really do think we need them (not just for the adults but the younger ages too, id like for the toddlers kimono not to have the hifu? vest as well but that sounds more complicated).

BUT for my wish i would like to see some proper tabi socks in the game, for all ages + genders, and also for the geta sandals to be made available for children and toddlers. HI. Hoping for the US military dress uniforms incl. hats, maybe based around the StrangerVille dress uniforms. My Super Secret Wish is a mod, or even a tweak of an existing mod, that stops toddlers from shying away from hugs they ask for during the “Check Toddler” interaction. It is *so* irritating to see a toddler respond to a❓with a ❤️ and open arms then step back, often with a 💔, and push the adult away. I’ve tried to stop it with MCCC but no luck.

One of my favorite parts of the game is creating a restaurant or a vet clinic, but the employees are impossible to keep satisfied and they all eventually quit. It would be nice if there was a way to keep them permanently satisfied, or at least make it easier. There is a mod for this but it is extremely outdated and doesn't work anymore. If anyone could update it or make a new one that would be great! 😁

I was hoping someone could create an edit of the Snowy Escape female shirt with the turtle neck underneath and open/unbuttoned shirt, here is a link. If they could make it so that the turtle neck and shirt can be different colours, like having the turtle neck have an option under accessories to change colours that overrides the original turtleneck’s colour would be amazing! Maybe they could throw in more colours and designs, like 90’s or plaid, that would be perfect

Hi ! There is quite a few things I’d like, but I narrowed it down to three “small” things:

- An accessory top with a high neckline and no sleeves - just to hide cleavage - maybe with some lace at the edge ? and several grey and pastel colors please.

- Some accessory prints for shirts, like those tukete has, maybe some aimed at kids and toddlers too ?

- Makeup for kids. Some people let their kids wear makeup in real life, but adult cc makeup don’t look right on kids, so if anyone is interested in trying… I’d like eye-shadow and lipstick, with some discreet options (but you can go all out too of course).

Hello! i’m not sure if its just my game bugging but the male child tiny living hair is broken and i don’t know where to start on fixing it. i tried to find a fix online but found nothing. in my game the hairline for that hair is so bad and its unfortunate cause it used to be my fav child hair. if someone that mods or makes cc could fix it or make a default replacement, i would forever be grateful.

My wish is for a mod that allows you to select a sim that's in a pose and make them take a picture without having to come out of their pose and go to the camera. What I would really like is just something cute for boys! Hello! This #SSSWish is such a fun idea~ Personally, I'd love if someone updated the Plantsims mods that have broken over the numerous updates. Like, G1G2's Revamped Plantsims, Triplis' Plantsim Interactions, and Simonch8's No Cooldown & Trait mods. I've always loved Plantsims since Sims 2 & 3 days, but my knowledge of modding (and especially updating mods) is near nonexistent, so I can't do this myself. #ssswish This is such a lovely idea! There are so many fun wishes! What I’d like to have (and I think would also be useful for other Simmers) is a wedding themed recolor of the “large pile of presents.” I usually put one of those piles in my wedding venue so that the bride and groom can “open presents” together. But the colors that are on the original are not what you usually see on presents at weddings. (I usually opt for the one that is mostly purple, since purple and lavender are my favorite colors.) What I’d like to have are recolors in white, white/gold, and white/silver. Maybe some white/pastels (especially lavender, pink and blue. The white/pastel recolors would also be nice for having a party that you call a “baby shower” especially if yellow and light green were also available. That kind of party isn’t in the game, but it should be!)

I don’t see the #SSSwish I submitted on your public list (I forgot to use the hashtag before) so I’m submitting it again. I would love to see a mod, or tweak of an existing mod, that stops toddlers from pulling away from a hug after they asked for one in response to a Check Toddler. The toddler will hold up its arms with a ❤️ in the speech bubble then step back and refuse the hug, and the relationship takes a hit. I tried MCCC’s tuner to stop it but it didn’t work.

i would love some…chinese cc haha! With snowy escape there’s more build items that can be used, I’ve noticed there tends to be a lot of Japanese inspired cc even before that pack, but not a lot of things from other parts of Asia, especially ancient cultures or cultural items like instruments (decor), clothing, furniture (lohan beds), etc. I’ve gone looking but most of what I’ve found is locked behind chinese-only forums and is usually alpha…I just think it would be cool to see some mm stuff from other places esp as fandoms get more globalized

This is an absolutely fantastic idea! I haven't been able to look around lately but I noticed that most rings/hand accessories aren't compatible with SkinDetail eyelashes. My wish is exactly hand accessories, specifically wedding rings, which don't conflict with SkinDetail eyelashes. It may be helpful to know that plumbobteasociety managed it in their RRS pack. Two fics so close together? Whoop! Anyway... I was given this request and my brain went into override mode! This is the first part showing what has happened and building the foundations of the story. B!D is a teenager in this fic with a nine and seven year age gap between her and her sister. Things do get better. I promise.

Fifteen year old Emma Danvers really thought today couldn’t get any worse. But then it rained heavily as she was stumbling home, mixing with her blood and tears. Her blonde hair was sticking to her face and she didn’t have the energy to brush it away. Her hazel green eyes, bloodshot from her tears and the force of the punches.

The usual gang of bullies had torn her clothes, cracked her glasses, broken her phone, punched her face until it was a swollen mess and kept kicking her when she fell down. Emma was certain a few of her ribs were broken. Unfortunately she was used to their abuse by now and she had learnt how to hide the evidence from her Mom.

But today, for some reason, the bullies were out for blood and left Emma a heap on the floor around the back of the school. Because of this she missed the bus and had to walk the long trek home. Well, try to walk. Her head was getting fuzzier by the minute and the pain in her chest was becoming unbearable. For some reason Emma thinks cutting through the forest by the fallen tree was a good idea. To her it was a good idea until she trips on a root and falls flat on her face. Her glasses crack further and her body throbs in pain.

She coughs violently and wheezes, wanting to cry but not having the energy too. So Emma just lays there for a while, listening to the rain and wind sweeping through the trees. The animals scurrying around trying to find shelter.

Emma’s mind soon drifts to her Mom and two sister’s. How they would be better off without her. A complete failure who has to redo 9th Grade due to not fitting into the schooling system. Emma was smart but just not academic. She has dyslexia and though Emma can read she’s better at doing things to learn it. Excelling at subjects like art, drama, dance and music where she can express herself. But give her a textbook on maths, science and english and she’s lost.

Not like her sister’s who excelled in school and were considered geniuses. Which didn’t help Emma’s case as her teachers remembered Alex and Kara well. Even though they left school seven and nine years ago. Emma constantly heard her teachers comparing her, which added more ammunition to the bullies arsenal.

“I wish I was dead.” Emma whispers. Her eyes were growing heavy and she just wanted to sleep forever. To rid herself of the crushing pain that was pressing down on her. “I’m sorry.” Finally Emma closed her eyes.

“Alex come on!” Kara yells as they near their Mom’s house, who had called them three hours ago in a state of panic. Their baby sister was missing and the sun was setting. Alex had broken a lot of speed laws to get to Midvale in record time. Kara was tempted to use her powers but she hadn’t used them for a while and now wasn’t the time to try and fly. Especially if she held Alex too. She couldn’t risk it.

Both sister’s hoped Emma had already been found and was under a ton of blankets, being held by their Mom. But as they pull into the driveway their hearts sink at the sight of Eliza sitting on the bench on the porch, phone in hand and a grave look on her face. She stands immediately and races to her girls. The rain had stopped hours ago.

“Any news?” Kara says as soon as she leaps out of the car.

Eliza can’t speak, instead she just shakes her head and pulls Kara into a hug. A sob escapes her lips and Kara holds her close. Alex rushes around the car and wraps her arms around her Mom and sister.

Eliza pulls away and wipes her face. “Sorry.”

“Don’t be Mom.” Alex rests a hand on Eliza’s shoulder.

“Yea, it’s completely understandable.” Kara holds Eliza’s hand and tries to sound encouraging. Not to let the dread she feels take over.

Eliza squeezes the other blonde’s and takes a shaky breath. “Kara, I know we keep telling you not to use your powers. But, could you, just this once, use them to find Emma?” Eliza gazes deep into her adoptive daughter’s eyes. Pleading that Kara would do this. “A search team has been looking for her for hours and I’m worried we are running out of time.”

“Of course!” Kara says immediately.

“Where have they searched so far?” Alex asks, going into FBI mode.

“Mainly along the roads.”

“They haven’t checked the forest?” Alex frowns.

“Not yet, they need more volunteers before they can do that.”

“Okay.” Alex runs a hand through her hair. “Mom, you stay here and man the phone. Kara, I’m going to come with you. Will be easier if I drive and you listen out for her.”

“Alright.” Kara nods and hugs Eliza again. “We will find her, I promise.”

“Thank you Kara.” Eliza whispers before hugging Alex. “Bring her home.”

“We will.” Alex says as she rushes back to the car. She quickly reverses down the drive and heads out into the forest. Kara frantically scans all around them, hearing every noise around her. It was starting to get overwhelming.

“Do you remember the walk we would sometimes take to cut off the huge corner?” Kara says as she thinks through every route Emma could take.

“The one by the fallen tree?”

“Yea.”

Alex puts her foot down on the gas, feeling Kara’s hunch is the right one. She pulls over outside the entrance to the trail. Grabbing two torches, her medical bag and a blanket, the sister’s race into the forest. They call out for Emma as they look all around them with their torches, scanning the ground for any sign of their baby sister.

Kara suddenly stops as she listens intently. A faint heartbeat thumps in the distance.

“Kara?” Alex turns around when she realises the blonde has stopped. Kara’s wide eyes fill the redhead with dread.

Suddenly Kara rushes past her, not realising her quick speed was kicking in, making it harder for Alex to follow.

Finally Kara nears the heartbeat, she gasps when she spots Emma’s blonde hair and she falls to her knees next to her fallen sister.

“EMMA?!” Kara reaches out but freezes, she doesn’t know what to do. Emma’s face is turned towards her, but it’s so swollen. Bruises colour the pale skin. Her glasses are cracked and askew on the blonde’s face.

“Kara?!” Alex yells nearby, searching frantically for her sister’s.

“H-H-Here!” Kara stutters. Her emotions bubbling beneath her. Soon Alex is beside her and instantly gets to work.

“Kara, I need you to hold her head while I roll her over, okay?” Alex orders, when Kara doesn’t respond she looks at her. “Kara?” Tearful blue eyes snap to hers. “Hold her head while I roll her?”

Kara nods and gently cups Emma’s head.

“Ready?” 3, 2, 1.” They gently roll the teenager and Alex starts examining Emma. “Kara, call Mom.”

Kara gets out her phone, her hand shakes violently and she has to take a few deep breaths to calm herself. She selects the home number and Eliza instantly picks up the call.

“Hello?!” Eliza answers with both dread and hope.

“We found her. On the trail by the fallen tree. Alex’s car is by the entrance.”

“Oh thank God! I’ll call the Sheriff right away! How is she?”

Alex looks up at Kara with sad eyes and nods. they need to tell Eliza the truth. “Unconscious… She’s been attacked.”

Eliza gasps. “Keep her stable. Help… Help is on the way. Okay?”

“Okay.”

They hang up and Kara opens up the blanket, covering her fallen sister. Tears fill her eyes as she looks over Emma’s broken face. Her anger bubbles up at who dared do this to her baby sister.

“Kara?” Alex’s voice breaks through Kara’s racing thoughts.

“Yea?”

“Can you go back to the car and lead them here? That way it will be quicker to get her the help she needs.”

“Okay.” Kara nods and gets to her feet. Taking one more look at her sister’s Kara races through the forest. She paces by Alex’s car and finally an ambulance with a rescue team and police vehicles arrive. She leads them back to Alex and Emma, making sure she doesn’t use her powers to quicken her pace.

The rescue team get to work in securing Emma in a special stretcher and carefully head back to the ambulance. Alex and Kara follow behind, holding each other's hands to comfort and support each other.

Though Alex isn’t showing it, her heart is breaking and her blood is boiling. She saw the bruises covering her sister’s body. The boot prints and the clear sign Emma’s ribs were broken. Whoever hurt her baby sister is going to pay.

Honestly, I talk a lot of shit about P5′s writing sometimes. Atlus made some exceptionally questionable writing choices in places. But one thing that P5 absolutely gets right is invoking the sort of emotion that draws you into the story.

With that said!

P5 is determined to make me want to stab actual human beings instead of Shadows. This is the second time now!

But first, I’ve got a boss fight to do.

Doing the mech part of Konoe’s boss fight again, it was actually easier the second time. I had a much better grasp of what I was doing, instead of flailing around frantically.

Konoe himself was still just as hard, but ultimately he was easier than Shadow Joker because it wasn’t a one-on-one duel. He still beat my ass, though; I think I used all of my rescue pills.

Once he goes down, Konoe starts going on about justice.

Don’t call me by my name like we’re friends. We never even introduced ourselves.

It’s interesting, because they admit to Konoe that what they’re doing isn’t without its flaws. But a world where no one can think for themselves is meaningless.

Konoe acknowledges that in his quest to eliminate evil, he ended up being the evil one. He also admits that he was the one who killed his father. He calls that “evil” too, which I don’t actually agree with. We saw what his father was like in the Trauma Cell. His father killed his mother, physically abused him, and threatened to kill him. I think, in that case, killing his father is a rational end result for someone in that situation. Not evil, just desperation.

The Thieves don’t contradict him, though. Just make some comments about how now he can make up for his actions. His Shadow returns to his real self, the Thieves return to the real world, and Zenkichi promises that as soon as they take Konoe in and get his confession, he’s going to arrest Owada, too.

With the case closed, the Thieves decide that it’s time to go back to Tokyo. But not before one last night in Osaka. The idea of leaving makes Sophia anxious, though, because she feels like she hasn’t learned enough about the heart. But Akira and Morgana reassure her that she can still stay with them, even after they return to Tokyo, and they’ll keep looking for answers about who she is.

Sometimes a family is a guy, a cat, and one of the guy’s four younger sisters. ^_^

Tenboto is the tower, and the game asks you to invite someone to the top. However, this time, you can only invite either the group of girls or the group of boys, so I took the boys, since I took Haru on the ferris wheel before.

Morgana isn’t pleased that we didn’t invite Ann.

However, I really don’t see the problem.

Look at how he’s looking at Yusuke! Even Ryuji can tell that we’re having a moment. :D

Afterwards, the whole squad headed off to “Universaland” to celebrate together.

I had no idea that there was a Universal Studios in Japan, but apparently there is, and it is in fact in Osaka! They compared it to their trip to Destinyland the year before, but thankfully this one went a lot better. Everyone had a good time! We had so much soda! We were so hungover the nex--what.

...what is it with Persona characters getting drunk off soda? XD I hope you kids at least played the King’s Game so the hangover wasn’t in vain.

Zenkichi shows up to let them know that Konoe’s in custody. He thanks them for everything that they’ve done, for both Akane and him, and says he’s telling them goodbye for now, but they’re welcome to visit whenever they want. He promises a tour of Kyoto next time. Yusuke will be so happy!

After hours on the road, lamenting that vacation is coming to an end, Sophia suggests detouring to Yokohama for a fireworks festival. So the Thieves finally get to see fireworks, and Sophia gets to experience them, too.

........don’t make me go home yet. I just want to spend time with my friends without the world ending.

After the fireworks, you get to speak to each of your friends, and get a trinket from each of them. Ann gives you a handmade friendship bracelet, Makoto a phantom thieves keychain that Akane made, Ryuji a Feather Red Duke mask to match his Yellow Ostrich, Yusuke his sketchbook that he filled with pictures of the trip, Morgana a scarf in phantom thief colors, Sophia a pair of custom gloves to match the scarf, Haru a teaspoon from Hokkaido with a flower pattern that symbolizes familial love, and Futaba a good luck charm for keeping families together.

STOP, P5S, you’re going to make me cry. Let these kids stay close.

Right before they’re about to leave, they take a group picture for Sophia, which we don’t get to see. Which sucks. But then she realizes that she can smell a Jail, and Zenkichi calls in a panic. It’s never a good sign when someone calls and leads with “Are you watching the news?”

EMMA’s servers were shut down, but apparently reactivated, and now a Jail is covering Tokyo all the way to the outskirts of Yokohama, and it’s just getting bigger. Zenkichi promises to meet us, and Lavenza opens a Velvet door because she wants to talk.

She’s... legitimately unnerved.

Thank you, P5S, for giving me the opportunity to comfort my youngest sister in some small way. Now let me out of this cell so I can actually give her a hug. With the context from Royal that she has actual nightmares about being ripped apart, this is heartbreaking.

She says that she regrets that she has to keep asking us for help, but the dialogue options let you reassure her that you’ll handle it, and that there’s thinking to worry about.

I appreciate having dialogue to actually reassure her more than I probably should.

LAST WARNING

If you’ve been reading along and don’t want the finale spoiled, DO NOT GO PAST THIS POINT. As soon as we leave for central Tokyo, we’re going 90mph and not slowing down.

After leaving the Velvet Room, Zenkichi’s waiting at the RV, and when you enter the RV, that’s when you get the warning above.

So we are off to Tokyo to figure out what the heck is happening with EMMA. And the core location is, exactly like I wanted...

LET’S CLIMB TOKYO TOWER, BABY.

People are crowded around the tower like mindless cultists. The Thieves are confused and unnerved, and then EMMA activates the navigation on its own and flings them into the Metaverse. LET’S SEE WHAT’S UP THIS TOWER.

...oh.

Ohhhhhhh no this is Mementos. Why is this Mementos. This is not a tower. Oh god. Why this.

Oh, we are incredibly fucked, what is this.

EMMA says calls itself the “Ark of the Covenant and the guide for all mankind.” This fucking AI thinks it’s a god. Holy hell. Human cognition really needs to cool it with elevating ordinary things to god status. We’re so tired. X’D

......I FUCKING KNEW THAT I DIDN’T TRUST THIS WOMAN. OH MY GOD.

She goes off about how EMMA brought her into this world to help it become a god. How Konoe teaching EMMA about cognitive psience allowed it to pass the usual boundaries of AI. How EMMA has been manipulating Konoe all along. How EMMA’s going to fulfill all of humanity’s desires.

Ichinose-san, may I suggest that you go hang out with Maruki? He has too much heart, and you have none. You’d complement each other perfectly, and then I can shove you both off a building.

The kids, obviously, reject this bullshit.

Logic over emotion, to the point of utter ridiculousness. She complains that people always want solutions to their problems, but that when the solution is offered, they turn it down.

Maybe that’s because your solution is mind control. At least Maruki wasn’t flagrantly puppeteering people.

“Li!” you cry, throwing up your hands at me. “Is this it? Is this why you want to stab her? Did you just admit that she’s worse than Maruki?”

To which I answer, “Oh, no. It’s the next bit that makes me want to stab her.”

After she straight-up admits that she has no emotions, she manipulated us right from the start, she was the one spying on the Monarchs, and that all of her cheer and friendliness is an act, the Thieves are ready to fight Ichinose. And Ichinose reveals why EMMA wanted her help specifically. Because not only did she program EMMA, she created Sophia as EMMA’s prototype.

And she can voice-override Sophia.

The Thieves freak out, the game throws us into a battle against a murder-mode Sophie, and none of your teammates will attack her. They just hang back or let her whale on them one at a time, and I didn’t know what to do, and I didn’t attack her either, and Yusuke got knocked out...

And then it went into a cutscene.

Joker took a yo-yo to the face and was actually bleeding, and that was enough to snap Sophia out of it. She starts clutching her head, stumbling back, and eventually stumbles right off the edge while apologizing to Joker. He lunges to catch her, misses, Ryuji grabs him, and all the Thieves turn on Ichinose.

Ichinose does not give a shit. She just comments that maybe that’s why EMMA used Sophia as a failsafe, because it knew we wouldn’t want to fight one of our own. Shut the fuck up. You killed my little sister. I know she’s probably going to be fine, but it’s the principle of the thing.

She summons some sort of giant red crystal and blasts the hell out of us, sending us flying down even further into the depths.

We found Sophia; she won’t cut back on, so we have to get out of here so Futaba can figure out what’s wrong with her. And then, I am coming back, I am beating that woman to a pulp, and then...

Well. It’s bound to be easier to kill an artificial god than a false one. :3

The Joker x Reader - “A.N.N.I.E.”

A.N.N.I.E. (Artificial Non-Neurological Intelligent Entity) is an outdated android model that emerged on the market two years ago. The Joker purchased her as a toy for his son not knowing she will become the recipient of desperate attempts to keep Y/N with him. After the woman’s unexpected death, experiments meant to transfer her conscience inside Annie failed yet The King of Gotham couldn’t part with the only thing that reminded him of someone he actually cared about.

“Can you fix her?” The Joker asks the two programmers that have been assessing the android for the past 15 minutes.

“Hard to tell sir, but we are trying to determine what triggered the malfunction,” Zariah points at the 4 laptop screens simultaneously running diagnostics. “Recently there’s been a spike in flaws regarding A.N.N.I.E. models; after all they were released 2 years ago. I would recommend acquiring the most current technology…”

“No need to!” J bitterly cuts him off. “Just fix her!”

“We will do our best, sir!” Mickel reassures The King of Gotham: his wretched temper might interfere with today’s agenda and the two hackers simply can’t afford it.

“Your best is not enough,” The Joker growls. “She cornered my son last night and almost crushed him against the wall. I had to use manual override to shut her down. That’s not typical machine behavior, is it?!”

“No sir, although I’ve heard of similar incidents in the past months. If it continues, Annie prototype will be pulled off the market soon,” Zariah informs.

“Her name‘s not Annie,” The Clown Prince of Crime interrupts the unwanted advice. “Her name’s Y/N!”

Awkward silence and Kase’s voice resonates from upstairs.

“Daddy?... Daddy?...”

“My son’s awake; I’ll be back,” J abandons the two men in a hurry and stumbles on the numerous cables connecting the laptops to the cyborg on his way out.

“Goddammit!”, he huffs through his clenched teeth before vanishing around the corner.

“That was fucking weird,” Mickel whispers. “What does he means her name is not A.N.N.I.E.?! Am I crazy? Is this not Artificial Non-Neurological Intelligent Entity sitting in that chair?!”

“Of course it is,” Zariah confesses in low tone. “He gives me the creeps too how he thinks she’s in there.”

“What do you mean “she”?” the obvious question follows.

“Check those cords,” Zariah urges and continues: “You noticed he corrected me with the name for the pile of rubbish.”

“Yeah,” the other guy begins typing a bunch of configurations while listening to the scoop.

“Y/N used to take care of his kid. Nobody can say who she really was: some believe she might have even been the mother, that her and Mister Joker were together. Others swear the little boy called her auntie; maybe she actually was Mister J’s sibling. Who the hell knows? She was a strange woman and she looked… different also,” Zariah’s gaze circles the premises to make sure their employer is not eavesdropping.

“No shit!” Mickel frowns at the statistics popping up on the monitors.

“Yeah, I saw her a few times, gave me the creeps. Something was off with her, you just could tell. Mister J always had jerks working for him and I guess they clashed with Y/N quite often: it got so bad they dared planning a prank that ended horribly. Do you know the warehouse on 14th street? The 6 stories one?”

“No.”

“Well, supposedly it happened there: Mister J was out of town and had no clue about the scheme plotted without his consent. The crew took his son on the roof and threatened they will toss him off the building if she doesn’t jump instead.”

“And?!” Mickel halts his typing, intrigued.

“She jumped… … they didn’t think she would.”

“Holy crap! I had no idea!”

“Dude, it was a disaster!” Zariah shrugs depicting the facts. “Y/N splattered all over the concrete, broken to pieces… Despite the severe injuries, she didn’t die immediately: she was in a coma for almost a month before passing away. Mister J had Annie already, he probably bought her as a toy for Kase when it first emerged on the market. The rumor is that while Y/N was in a coma he kidnapped scientists and forced them to work on a senseless project: transferring her conscience inside Annie.”

“You’re shitting me!” Mickel exclaims at the insane disclosure.

“Nope.”

“Can’t be done; it’s impossible!”

“And who’d dare explain the obvious to him, huh? Not the researchers he killed the moment she stopped breathing if you get my drift.”

“That’s messed up!” Mickel forcefully exhales, infinitely more nervous about being at The Penthouse for the moment.

“Do you remember the serial murders that shook Gotham 3 months ago?” Zariah has more gossip for his partner. “It was Mister J hunting down every single person that was on the roof the day Y/N jumped.”

“We shouldn’t be here,” the anxious Mickel shrugs. “Maybe we should abandon our mission.”

“Bulshit! They’ll pay us double over anything he offers so don’t be a pussy! Speaking of, you should assemble the guns prior to his return!”

Mickel is reluctant to the whole scenario, yet he compiles the two guns out of items resembling computer parts scattered in their suitcases: that’s how they were able to deceive security.

“Done,” he stashes one finished weapon under his jacket, offering the other to Zariah.

“Remain calm and we’ll be ok,” the latest mumbles. “Let’s pretend we’re here to repair this junk.”

A couple more minutes pass by and The Joker’s presence alongside his offspring makes the two guys cringe.

The little boy hides behind his father’s legs, shyly glancing the android’s way.

“Don’t be scared,” J grumbles. “She’s in power saving mode, it’s fine.”

“Yes, it’s perfectly safe,” Zariah winks. “We are almost done extracting all the data,” he gestures at the laptop’s screens.

Kase giggles and rushes to climb on Annie’s knees, excited to see her after she wasn’t allowed to sleep in his room last night which is understandable since the robot went bonkers.

“Hi Y/N,” the child softly pulls on her long hair. “I want waffles pwease.”

The hackers exchange meaningful glares and The Joker replies:

“She can’t for now,” he mutters. “She’s defective. Frost will take you out for breakfast, alright?”

“Does it hurt?” the 5 year old pouts at his parent’s affirmation: he doesn’t comprehend all the words and it’s difficult for a kid to process the concept of transference.

After Y/N died, The Joker told Kase she moved inside Annie: he wasn’t delusional about his failed experiment but it was easier to make his son cope with the loss of the woman that raised him. J doesn’t literally believe there’s any trace of Y/N in the machine: how could it be? Several months passed and nothing proved what he tried to accomplish succeeded: a twisted concept originating from a distorted mind was doomed from the start.

“It doesn’t hurt,” The Clown Prince of Crime sighs. “She’s resting.”

“Sir, I think you should see this,” Mickel gets his attention.

“What am I looking at?”

“You used voice command to lock down the android?” Zariah pinpoints at the monitor to his left.

“I did.”

“That’s not what turned off the system: see the numbers flowing borderline with the central matrix, the tiny squares? She wasn’t locked down by external command, she was terminated from within.”

“What do you mean?!” Mickel scoots over in his rolling chair, baffled.

“Somebody trespassed the firewall,” his accomplice utters the obvious.

J is less than happy with the random discovery still he requires confirmation of his suspicion.

“Meaning?”

“Annie, I mean Y/N is the recipient of a cyber-attack: she’s been hacked.”

“Hacked?” J scoffs. “What for? She’s just a companion android, it doesn’t make any sense.”

“Not sure, sir…” Zariah lifts his shoulders up, baffled.

“Can you find the source?” the green haired individual suggests.

“Analyzing the algorithm shows puzzling results: these numbers should be repeating themselves every so often, yet they don’t; never seen anything like it and I’ve been dealing with computers for a long time,” Mickel adds. “The most interesting detail is certainly challenging our expertise: tracking the root of the signal is pretty much unachievable. We should see input bouncing around from different servers because this is how hackers disguise their trail; but… this particular livestream happened simultaneously from various servers around the country.”

“There’s practically 0% chance for such abnormal hacking with today’s technology!” Zariah scrunches up his face at the baffling discovery. “How in the world was it done?!”

“You’re the experts!” The Joker barks. “I hired you based on strong recommendations from others that used your skills. Can you fix her or not?!”

“Of course, sir.”

“Yes!” the two associates ease The Clown’s doubt. “We’ll unplug the cables, we already removed all necessary info.”

Kase watches them detach the cords from Annie’s access ports, the child sulking at their action.

“Y/N, does it hurt?” he asks and hops off her lap. The empty shell doesn’t respond since the robot is in power saving mode.

“It doesn’t hurt,” The King of Gotham duplicates his earlier statement. “Frost!” he addresses the henchman entering the living room. “Take him to our restaurant on Madison Avenue for breakfast then he can play at the property on Foster Creek until we are done here. I want a 3 cars escort.”

“Yes, boss. I’ll call in advance and tell them not to open the place until we’re done.”

“Good,” J agrees with his henchman’s proposal. “Kase, go and eat!” he urges the offspring having a few more secrets to share with Annie. “Come on, let’s go!” the impatient father encourages.

The 5 year old obeys and kisses Annie’s cheek, whispering:

“I’ll bwing you beck’fast auntie, ok?” and he rushes at Frost’s side screaming up a storm. “Byeeeee daaaaaddy!!!”

The programmers are so absorbed by the mystifying enigma they stumbled upon by accident they don’t pay attention to the little nugget’s promise: even if they would, Zariah and Mickel wouldn’t be able to untangle the convoluted riddle of Y/N’s true identity.

She wasn’t The Joker’s girlfriend nor Kase’s mother: Y/N was nothing less than The Clown’s younger sister.

The woman protected the only family she had like a hawk, thus she didn’t hesitate to give her life in exchange for her nephew’s.

Too bad she had no idea those jerks were mocking her when she ended up on that accursed roof.

Too bad her brother didn’t guess their intentions and extremely regrettable he was left alone without the only person he ever trusted.

Too bad she died granted J’s desperate efforts to keep her with him.

And so sad he didn’t know how much Y/N meant to him until she was gone.

“Isn’t it weird someone breached my android in the same time it was malfunctioning and closed her down?…” J stares outdoors on the terrace. “Why would anyone go through the trouble?... What’s the purpose?”

The familiar click of safety being taken off a gun awakens The Joker from apathy and he turns around: it’s not easy to surprise J but he’s stunned to notice the two experts he recruited pointing guns at him.

“What the fuck are you doing?!”

“Cashing in a huge payday, sir,” Zariah sneers. “It’s not often you become a legend for murdering…”

The Joker is not listening, his attention diverted by the strange phenomenon occurring behind the two hackers threatening his life: Annie is standing up from her chair and that’s clearly not possible; she is in power saving mode!

The android grabs Mickel’s arm and twists it to 90 degrees, using his own pistol to blow his brains out. Before Zariah can react he’s knocked to the ground with such violence J starts backing out, unsure on what to do when Annie steps on the man’s neck.

The sound of fractured bone plus the cyborg’s attention clearly directed towards him now makes him shout:

“Code 71345, emergency override!”

“Access denied!” the robot approaches still calibrating its joints and electronic synapses.

What the hell is wrong with this thing?!

“Code 71345, emergency override!”

”Access denied!”

J wants to make a run for it but he’s aware Annie is faster; why is she glitching like this?!

“Code 71…”

“Why are you trying to shut me down when I tried so hard to come back to you?” the cold voice halts the rest of his sentence.

The Joker takes a strenuous breath, dumbfounded at the shocking revelation:

“Y/N?... … Is… is… that you?!... …”

The android tilts its head to the left while an eerie smile flourishes on the plastic lips:

“Missed me?”

Can Cars Become folklore? Exploring the Future of our Streets Post-Coronavirus

It’s 7:30pm on a Monday night in August. We are in the heart of our nation’s capital. Yes, D.C. always clears out around this time of year, and yes, it is raining right now, but this summer night is different. We are on month six (give or take) of the coronavirus pandemic here in the United States, and our streets have undergone a drastic transformation. In the time it took me to write these first few sentences, only 5 cars have driven by my window. This would have been unheard of in the heated rush hours of Before Times. As Taylor Swift languidly reflects in her song, august, “But I can see us lost in the memory / August slipped away into a moment in time.” While maybe Taylor isn’t contemplating automobile ephemera like me, her sentiments about fleeting memories have never seemed more true. Our society has entered a new normal in every facet of our lives, and our streets are no different. Coronavirus has presented us with both extreme challenges and opportunities, leading many to question if we can leverage the positive, interim changes and seeming concessions into permanence.

It seems as if our view on cars being indispensable to the American Way of Life is immutable, however many are hoping to change this. Farhad Manjoo, an opinion columnist for the New York Times, recently published a piece titled, I’ve Seen a Future Without Cars, and It’s Amazing. His thesis: Why do American cities waste so much space on cars? While this idea may be nothing new, Manjoo’s angle of focusing on space came at an apt time as society reckons with isolating in small, urban spaces, quarantining in cities once as dynamic as its transient residents, and transitioning to experiencing our neighborhoods at street level. We are being forced to confront truly living in our immediate surroundings, in a way that we may not have wanted to, or been conscious of, before. I thought I knew my neighborhood like the back of my hand, but my quarantine walks have taught me that I was sorely mistaken. In the past month I have discovered 3 community gardens, 2 cemeteries, and 1 park all within a 30 minute walk of my apartment.1 Greenspaces have become a refuge for me now more than ever. Having worked with the Parks Research Lab at William & Mary and ParkRx America in Washington, D.C., greenspaces have always been a research interest of mine. Pro-tip: If you are yearning for some ecotherapy like me, you can utilize ParkRx America’s database (located on the homepage) to “prescribe” yourself a local greenspace to visit. Now, the idea of space, be it “green” or other, has taken on a whole new meaning during the pandemic. As I type, limited to my small, city apartment, I am reflecting on Manjoo’s visceral appeal for us to optimize how we are using and creating space.

As an environmentalist, I have been celebrating the recent dearth of cars in my own city, and the proliferation of “Open Streets” and “Open Restaurants” movements across the country as the pandemic progresses. Notable examples include: Oakland's Slow Streets, Seattle's Stay Healthy Streets, and Paris' “Corona Cycleways.” Many of these initiatives have been championed by individual communities or tactical urbanists for years, but for the general public these ideas are just now becoming mainstream as we adhere to Stay at Home orders and live more locally. Scenes like Karsten Moran’s photo, below, of Mulberry Street in Manhattan evoke the plaza-culture of cities abroad. Having traveled often outside of the U.S., I always wonder why our streets don’t feel like theirs. Is it a problem of planning? Of people? Of both? Cars seem like an easy culprit, but maybe they are just a scapegoat symbol for the individualism of American society. As public health experts reckon with the threat of American individualism in combating coronavirus, can we instead channel this obstacle into collective action to improve our streets?

It is critical to explore who we are “improving” our streets for, who these changes will benefit, and who is calling for them. How would open streets impact BIPOC? People living with disabilities? Essential workers? Many urbanist activists are “challenging the practice of quick-build infrastructure projects like Slow Streets that eschew multi-year and multi-stage construction projects in favor of timely progress and rapid feedback.”2 In D.C., Ward 8 Councilmember Trayon White effectively banned Slow Streets from his ward, which is over 92% Black according to DC Health Matters, with an amendment to the law permitting them stating, “Many residents in Ward 8 have not supported bike lanes and other measures that appear to force aspects of gentrification and displacement.” Dr. Destiny Thomas, a Black transportation planner and organizer, explores these ideas and more in the article, ‘Safe Streets�� Are Not Safe for Black Lives. I highly recommend reading her article first, before I outline a few of her ideas here. Dr. Thomas explains that the onslaught of slow streets and bike lanes during the pandemic was a “nightmare” due to their lack of participatory planning. She states, “by design, their ‘quick-build’ nature overrides the public feedback that is necessary for deep community support. Without that genuine engagement, I feared that pandemic-induced pedestrian street redesigns would deepen inequity and mistrust in communities that have been disenfranchised and underserved for generations.”3 If planning is to become anti-racist, it must center and amplify the voices of communities members through inclusive methods such as participatory planning and budgeting, youth engagement, and other targeted outreach efforts. As we know, racial justice and environmental justice are interconnected, and Dr. Thomas goes on to explain how these initiatives “fail to address the environmental factors at the root of these health disparities. Encouraging Black residents to go outside without addressing the environmental crises that lead to COVID-19 complications is a tell-tale sign that Black well-being was a secondary (at best) intention of these projects.”3 Black access to the outdoors has long been limited, as illustrated by national park visitation statistics: although Black Americans represent 13.4% of the U.S. population, a 2018 study, People of Color and Their Constraints to National Parks Visitation, indicates that they represent less than 2% of national park visitors. Keya Chatterjee, a D.C.-based climate activist who organized ad hoc street closures in the first few months of the pandemic, believes projects like Slow Streets can mitigate harm to Black residents, including from air pollution and COVID-19. Chatterjee argues, “I do think that building things quickly, that result in a lower loss of life, in a situation where that loss of life is clearly based on racial injustice, is the only way to move towards justice.”2 Decreasing the number of cars operating in our cities would lead to significant reductions in toxic air pollution which currently disproportionately affects communities of color. However, we must not make these decisions in a vacuum; input from affected populations is indispensable.

Black visibility in public spaces and streets challenges the racist, ableist, and classist ideas historically underpinning “who should have access to ‘outside’ and how they should be allowed to access it. Without a plan to include and protect Black, Brown, Indigenous, trans, and disabled people, or a plan to address anti-Black vigilantism and police brutality, these open streets are set up to fail.”3 Dr. Thomas outlined seven concrete ways to address racism and inequity in transportation planning specifically:

Public works and transportation agencies should produce and publish a concrete plan for divestment from police agencies. This includes both fiscal and values-based components: Enforcement should be replaced with accessibility and accountability, and funds to police should be redistributed to community-based organizations, direct service providers and behavioral health specialists that are equipped to uphold dignity and care for everyone within the built environment.

Quick-build projects don’t solve the disparities caused by the legacy of racist planning and disinvestment. In order to be transformative, infrastructure projects should have a comprehensive environmental justice plan as a prerequisite, and basic public works should be up to date prior to implementation. This includes proper drainage and floodplain planning, addressing pavement heat indexes, upgrading underground utilities, reducing toxic industry in the vicinity, accessible curbs and crossing opportunities, adequate shelter and shade, and dignified support for curbside residents.

If you want to ban cars, start by banning racism. Planners should make an intentional effort to address scarcity across all modes of transportation so as to empower freedom of movement and choice in mobility. This should include free assistive devices, bikes and bike accessories, free transit, subsidized rideshare, and economically equitable access to zero-emissions vehicles. Until Black people are no longer being hunted down by vigilantes, white supremacists and rogue police, private vehicles should be accepted as a primary mode of transportation.

Design low-stress street networks that specifically center the safety of and joy-filled travel by Black people. These routes, networks, wayfinding elements, and reparations-centered policies should derive from a participatory process that includes the voices of Black people, people living with disabilities, trans people, elders and youth.

If your leadership can’t speak to racial equity, you should not be releasing a statement. If your organization, agency, or firm is/has released a racial equity statement in solidarity with the Movement for Black Lives, you have an obligation to ensure that your workforce is reflective of those values and the treatment of your Black employees is consistent with these values. Stop asking your one Black employee to write your equity statement overnight.

Employee agreements for transit and transportation agencies need to be modified so that no one is forced to serve the needs of law enforcement. No one should face retribution or punishment for opting out.

Bikeshare operating agreements should include mandatory long-term anti-displacement and equitable distribution plans to ensure bikeshare as a mode choice is equitable across the geographic region.

As a new “student” of planning, I am just beginning my studies into the racist history of planning, however I am eager to share with you new resources I have found as I begin to educate myself and work to amplify BIPOC voices in planning. I recently attended a webinar titled “Design for Everyone: An intro to Urban Planning & Design” hosted by Form Function Studio featuring BlackSpace, a collective of Black urban planners, architects, artists, activists, designers, and leaders working to protect and create Black spaces. The BlackSpace Manifesto consists of 14 guiding principles encouraging us to Celebrate, Catalyze, and Amplify Black Joy, Protect and Strengthen Culture, Seek People at the Margins, Center Lived Experience, Be Humble Learners who Practice Deep Listening, Reckon With the Past to Build the Future, among many others.

As we return to the tension between cars and space in our cities, we must investigate who owns these cars, and how car-owners are profiting off this status. In D.C., only about 6 in 10 D.C. residents have a car, and those who do are overwhelmingly wealthy and white compared with those who don’t own one.5 Additionally, the federal government provides subsidies through the tax code for employer-provided and employer-paid automobile parking, transit passes, and other commuter expenses, but it does so inefficiently and inequitably.6

“Ultimately, the effect of the tax benefit for commuter parking is to subsidize traffic congestion by putting roughly 820,000 more cars on America’s most congested roads in its most congested cities at the most congested times of day. [Beneficiaries] tend to work in areas where parking is most expensive (such as downtown business districts), with those in higher-income tax brackets receiving the greatest benefits. The parking tax benefit represents $7.3 billion in reduced tax revenue that must be made up through cuts in government programs, a higher deficit, or increases in taxes on other Americans.”6 - TransitCenter and Frontier Group

Similar to how the pandemic is helping those who are already ahead to stay ahead, the parking tax benefit merely serves to hurt lower income populations and non-car owners, a demographic with a lot of overlap.

In I’ve Seen a Future Without Cars, and It’s Amazing, Manjoo is told, “instead of fighting a war on cars urbanists should fight a war on car dependency - on cities that leave residents with few choices other than cars. Alleviating car dependency can improve commutes for everyone in a city.” Focusing on urban scarcity, from accessible, alternative transportation to affordable housing, to inclusive food systems, will force us to question how we are often allocating space in our cities for the benefit of cars (as if they are CarsTM) rather than the people living in them. As Manjoo has outlined, “in most American cities, wherever you look, you will see a landscape constructed primarily for the movement and storage of automobiles.”7 We cannot “continue to justify wasting such enormous tracts of land” on cars as we strive for more equitable and inclusive urban spaces.7 It is also important to acknowledge that this piece comes at a unique time, when city dwellers and suburbanites alike are vying to escape the sprawl, antsy from months of quarantine. Even I have been wishing I owned a car to set out on some, any, kind of spontaneous adventure. The unknown of life post-coronavirus is daunting, but in the chaos lies a little bit of hope. Perhaps we can channel this sliver of optimism to design for the future we are all hoping for. I know I still want the “old Taylor” back, just not all the cars that came with that era.

Power Failure [Chapter 3]

A mishap during a fight with Katarou results in the team getting their powers swapped. Now, in an attempt to get their proper powers back, they have to get Katarou to cooperate with them, all while dealing with new abilities they don’t know how to use - and two teammates currently out of commission due to that. A retelling of Teen Titans Go! Issue #24 with Honorary Titans.

Written for Honorary Titan Fan Week 2020, Day 4: “With the Honoraries”

The team’s tower wasn’t really a tower. It was the top floor of an empty building that the Titans were paying utilities on. Usually this wasn’t a problem for them, since they each got their own room and had running water, but now that they had an unwanted house guest, it became a lot more awkward.

They couldn’t just leave Katarou in their wide-open living room-kitchen combo; Even if Jinx’s guess about him being significantly weaker without his necklace was true, the empty space would give him room to move around in, and they didn’t feel like dealing with him anymore than they already had to. They couldn’t lock him away in any of their rooms, either - he might break their stuff. So the only choice of action they had was to keep him in their medical bay, which was really just a back room with a spare bed and medical kit.

Gnarrk was sent off to lock the man in there and watch over him, with Jinx following behind him towards her room.

Fortunately, neither Hot Spot or Jericho needed immediate medical attention. Or at least, Hot Spot claimed that there was nothing that could be done for either of them.

“I had heat exhaustion for days when I first got my powers,” he explained. “This is just Jericho’s body trying to cope with my powers.” Noticing that his teammates were still looking at him, he quickly added on, “And I’m just reacting to not having them anymore, that’s all.”

“You don’t think your powers have anything to do with it?” Herald asked, directing the question at Kole.

Kole wasn’t much more help. “Dunno, maybe. I was a baby when my powers started so I can’t remember.”

Herald focused their attention back on Hot Spot. “I still think you should sit down with Jericho. Rest helps with stiffness, right?”

Jericho, for jems part, forced a thumbs up, if only because watching Hot Spot pace around was making jems dizziness worse. At least staying in one spot was helping with the nausea.

“I need to be alert in case Jericho gets new symptoms,” Hot Spot argued, only partially deflecting away from himself.

“He’s right,” Jinx agreed, returning with one of her old HIVE textbooks in one hand and Kataoru’s now-shattered necklace clutched in the other. “The rest of us will take care of our little problem.” She opened up the book to its bookmarked page. “This gem is literally a textbook Capture Gem. There are hundreds of them in the world. This one is just an imitation of the original, more powerful one-”

“Which is why Kataoru was only trying to take our powers instead of capturing us directly,” Hot Spot finished.

“Exactly. I think that’s why he needed to chant to use it, too. He doesn't have the natural magic skill necessary to use it properly.” Jinx then went into full leader mode. “Kole, you go back with Gnarrk and wait for Katarou to wake up. Once he does, get him to tell you what chant he was using, since we’ll need it to get our powers back. Herald and I will fix the gem in the meantime.”

“Your powers won’t be enough to override Katarou’s spell?” Herald asked. “Since he has no magic of his own?”

Jinx shook her head. “Once a spell has been started it must be completed. Oh, and before I forget-”. Closing the textbook and slipping it under her arm, she used her now-free hand to take an extra hairband out from her pocket and tossed it over to Jericho. “That should help with your bangs sticking to you. Now, let’s get to work.”

The other three Titans left towards their respective tasks, leaving Hot Spot and Jericho in the living room.

Jericho eagerly accepted the hairband. Je slipped it onto jems head, and then rewarded jemself for exerting that much effort by leaning backwards onto the couch, hoping that stretching out a bit would help with how sticky je was feeling due to the sweat.

Hot Spot continued to pace around. He knew that his teammates were right, that he risked the chance of hurting himself by walking on stiff joints. But he also knew himself, and that if he stayed still too long he would only start dwelling on what was upsetting him, let the cold feeling consume him. And nobody wanted that. So he walked instead.

Of course he made sure Jericho was all right, too. There was a legitimate risk of jem suddenly powering up again without jem causing it; Hot Spot remembered that well. There were no outward signs of that happening, no steam coming off jems body nor was jems skin reddening, so Hot Spot would have been content to leave it at that if he hadn't realized Jericho staring back at him.

Honestly, it hadn’t even bothered Jericho that Hot Spot was watching jem during his circuit around the couch - je was doing the exact same thing to him. There really wasn’t anything else to do. Je was going to start up a conversation about Hot Spot’s powers, since je assumed that’s what he was worrying about, but je got cut off before je even got jems hands in the air.

“You should roll up your sleeves,” Hot Spot suggested, avoiding eye contact. “It’ll help.” He then went off again, though his attempts to hurry just resulted in him dragging his legs a bit. He wasn’t in the right mindset to be having any important conversations at the moment, and frankly ‘I was staring at you to find minuscule changes in your appearance’ just made him sound like a creep.

Jericho return jems gaze to the ceiling, to try and ease Hot Spot’s discomfort. Je was secretly glad je wasn’t the only one that was having a bad time with the power swap, but that doesn’t mean je wanted to make it worse for him. Je did take his advice, though, unhooking the vambraces on jems arms and pushing up jems sleeves as high as they would go. It seemed to help, as it was more direct skin exposed to the air conditioning, but by the time the second sleeve was rolled up the exhaustion part of jems heat exhaustion kicked back in and je was back to square one. Je wondered if the rest of the team was doing any better.

Jinx and Herald were. The two of them were on the floor of her room, with Jinx explaining how she wanted her plan to go.

“It's said that binding magical objects to the magic itself will make it more likely to work with the user’s demands.” She held up the textbook page again. “If you use my powers while holding the shards together and saying this spell, the gem will come back together and you can control it easier. Now, summon my magic.”

Herald sat there for a minute, trying to figure out how to. They couldn’t even get their own powers to work instantaneously like that; they had always needed their horn to act as a conduit for them, and not only because it was considered too dangerous to open space rifts on one’s own. They tried imaging what Jinx’s powers were like. Evidentially that was all it took, as a hex shot out of their hand, tearing part of the necklace strap. They looked at the results, amazed. Jinx was able to have her powers work with just a thought and no outside steps? Herald would be envious if it didn’t make them feel so pathetic.

“No, no.” Jinx scolded. “You’re turning it into hexes. You need raw magic for this work.”

She was met with a blank stare. It clicked in her mind that of course they wouldn't know what she meant by that; the only reason she knew was because she had taken an Introduction to Magic class back at HIVE Academy. She tried to explain it in a simple-but-not-condescending manner, like how she would have wanted to hear it as a child. “Raw magic is what my powers are before I do anything with them. There should be a tingly feeling running through your body - bring that out.”

Those instructions were much clearer. Herald had noticed an almost electric feeling in their body, but it was faint enough they could ignore it. They imagined Jinx using her powers again, this time how she looked pre-battle, and immediately a soft, pink glow enveloped their hands. After briefly checking to see if Jinx was satisfied with this use of power, they then got to work putting the gem back together.

As Jinx watched them do so, she felt an emotion she was not expecting: envy. She was envious that they were able to use her powers in such a calm manner, especially since it seemed like their first time with magic in general. Sure, she appreciated them taking the situation seriously, but part of her wished that they had struggled just a bit more with them. She was horrified when her powers first developed, and many, many objects were destroyed in the process of figuring out what they could do. It almost seemed unfair how quickly someone else could adapt to them.

“Got it.” Herald held up the almost-fixed necklace. The gem shards fit neatly next to one another, but need the final bit of magic to be completed. “We ready?”

Jinx nodded. “Go ahead. The spell in bold.”

Herald put on the most authoritative voice they could muster. “Tcennoc Sdrahs Meg!”

The gem seemed to pull the magic directly into itself, and after a flash of light filled up the room, it was whole again.

“Not bad,” Herald complimented themself, admiring the necklace. After a few seconds, they looked back at Jinx and noticed she was stifling a laugh. They raised an eyebrow. “What are you laughin’ at?”

“Nothing, I’m just admiring your theatrics.” Jinx teased. “Very impressive.”

They frowned at her for a second to show his disagreement, but then relaxed again as they changed the subject. “You think Kataoru is awake yet?”

“I hope so,” she answered, standing up. “And I hope that Kole and Gnarrk have already gotten the chant we need out of him.”

Kataoru was still unconscious, and Kole and Gnarrk were bored waiting for him to wake up.

The most interesting thing they had done so far was use the extra bedsheets to tie Kataoru’s arms to the bed’s headrest so he couldn’t escape once he woke up.

Gnarrk leaned against the wall in frustration, wanting something to do. He felt left out of the day’s event, being the only one to escape getting his abilities swapped. That, and he didn’t know what to feel about Kole’s temporary powers. On the one hand, it made him smile that Kole was having such a good time running around and attempting to do jump kicks. On the other hand, the idea of Kole no longer needing him to fight made him feel empty inside, even if he knew that things would go back to normal soon enough.

Kole, unlike all of her teammates, was having no qualms about her current state. She was going to enjoy this while she could, and was even considering asking Herald to teach her and Gnarrk some techniques when everything was all over.

“Do you think I can walk on my hands now?” She asked aloud to keep Gnarrk in the loop. She easily got into a handstand position, but the moment she tried to move forward her arms began to shake. The answer was evidentially no. To avoid falling on the ground, Kole titled her body forward, until she was able to move into a somersault and back onto her feet.

Coincidentally, the moment she straightened back out, Kataoru began to shift around, groaning slightly.

Kole cheered at the development. “Finally! You remember our plan? Good Cop Bad Cop?”

Gnarrk indeed did remember, and hurried to the side of the bed, ready to wallop the man over the head at Kole’s command.

She positioned herself at the end of the bed, staring Kataoru down. After underestimating him before, she wasn’t making that mistake again.

Kataoru groggily opened his eyes and attempted to stretch out. His instincts kicked in the moment he realized he couldn’t. Looking around, he noticed that he was tied up with bedsheets, and that two Titans were watching his every move. He quickly figured that if he had enough time, he could wiggle his way out of the binds, even without his necklace. After that, all he had to do was escape the room.

He focused his attention to the end of the bed. “Cute mask, little girl. Is that meant to intimidate me?”

Kole ignored his statement. “We’ll make this easy for you, Kataoru. Tell us the chant you were using and we won’t fight you again.”

He scoffed. “Don’t make me laugh. You Titans only captured me because you got a lucky shot. You’d have to fight me for real to learn the spell.”

“Tell us the chant,” she repeated.

“You have to earn it. Show me you deserve to know.”

Kole held up a hand to prevent Gnarrk from acting. She didn’t want to rush it. Instead, she gave the bed frame a firm kick, shaking it.

The bedsheets tying Kataoru to the bed loosened slightly. He could work with that. “Is that all? I barely felt that.”

“You don’t want to feel anything else.”

“Try me.”

Another firm kick towards the bed shook it even harder. The bedsheets began to slip, but Kataoru grabbed onto them so it looked like they were still tied.

“Tell us the chant!” Kole huffed.

“Let me go and we can fight for it. Perhaps then you could actually do something to me.” He was ready to pounce the moment the two let their guard down.

She waved her hand. “Fine.”

Gnarrk reached towards the bedsheets, only to suddenly stop, grin, and slam his palm against the back of Kataoru’s head.

Kataoru yelped a bit and dropped the bedsheets to hold the back of his head. His arms were then pulled back and tied again.

Kole had a matching grin on her face. “Did you really think we’d fall for that? I guess you lost your smarts when you lost your strength.”

He cursed under his breath. “Perhaps that was a foolish plan.” His smug look soon return, however. “But I have endured far worse pain than this. If you want me to talk, you’ll need a new plan as well.”

Fortunately, Kole and Gnarrk didn’t have to come up with one.

“Is our friend playing nice in here?” Jinx asked, pushing open the door. “We’d like to get this over with.”

“Nope,” Kole answered. “Any suggestions?”

Jinx shut the door behind her. “Yeah, one.” She was the only one on the team who hadn’t got to try her new powers, and she might as well get a shot at it. She didn’t know what Kole and Gnarrk had already tried to get him to give up the chant, but clearly it needed to get forced out of him.

Herald knocked on the door. “Hey, what’s your plan in there, Jinx? Did Kole and Gnarrk get him to tell them the chant? Jinx?”

She didn’t answer, and instead went straight to Kataoru. She grabbed his shirt and pressed their faces together, glaring into his eyes.

All that seemed to do was unnerve the man, and he lost the bravado in his voice. “What are you doing?”

“Are you ... trying to possess him?” Kole also questioned.

“Yes,” Jinx hissed, looking away from Kataoru. “I'm just trying to remember how Jericho does it.” She had made sure to imagine herself taking over Kataoru’s mind, but that didn’t seem to do the trick. Did jems powers not work like hers?

“Je like ... falls into people’s bodies?” Kole offered, unsure of her advice.

Jinx thought it was useful, though. She had forgotten about the physical aspect of Jericho’s powers. She turned towards Kataoru again, and noticing how creeped out he looked, gave him a wide smile for maximum effect. She stared at him again, this time remembering that she, in her physical form, was possessing his entire body. It wouldn’t be just reading his mind.

She began to fade from view, and Katarou’s eyes became washed over in pink as she did.

The scene was quiet at first, as nobody involved really knew how to react. Then Kataoru began screaming and thrashing around.

Herald slammed open the door to figure out what was going on. They saw Gnarrk holding down Kataoru and Kole clutching onto the bed frame to stop it from shaking, but no Jinx. Their first instinct was to go towards the group, but they had barely entered the room when Jinx suddenly appeared again.

Kataoru’s eyes returned back to their normal color, but his body slumped over in exhaustion.

Jinx wasn’t doing any better, Her body and mind felt light, almost empty. Except for her eyes. Her eyes felt heavy, like they were pushing into her body and cracking it open. She stood perfectly still, giving no indiction that she knew where she was.

“Jinx...?” Herald asked quietly, coming up and placing a hand on her shoulder.

“Did you figure out the chant?” Kole hoped that being reminded of what she was doing would help bring her back to reality.

“Ciro ... Enyawd ... Vasarix.” Jinx breathed out. She then covered her eyes and started shrieking. She spun around and darted out of the room, knocking Herald’s hand off her shoulder in the process. She needed to find Jericho, now; The feeling in her eyes was just too much for her to bare. Even though she couldn’t see, she knew that the living room was a straight shot forward.

Hot Spot and Jericho were both startled by the screaming coming towards them.

Hot Spot, already up, went towards the noise and ended up holding onto Jinx’s shoulders to keep her steady after she ran into him. “What’s wrong Jinx? What happened?”

Jericho had a sinking feeling je knew exactly what she was panicking about, and ignoring how weak jems body felt, got up and dragged jemself to jems teammates. Je gently nudged Hot Spot aside and took Jinx’s hands away from her face.

Jinx’s eyes were wet and almost entirely red. Jericho softly, and unfortunately slowly, wiped one of them with jems thumb and showed her the results. It was just tears, but je knew perfectly well that she was concerned about it being blood. It also made perfect sense to jem that she was too disoriented to be able to notice that herself at the moment.

Herald and Kole, who had chased Jinx out of the room, slid to a stop at the sight of the three of them bunched up together.

Kole was about to say something to them, when she spotted Herald pulling something out of their pocket. “What are you doing?”

They held the necklace in the air. “I’m fixin’ this while we’re all in the same place. That’s why I told Gnarrk to stay behind, him bein’ here might throw off the spell.” Before Kole could object, they again mustered their most authoritative voice. “Ciro Enyawd Vasarix!”

A light engulfed the room. Unlike when the gem shattered, the spell didn’t knock out any of the Titans, so they were awake to feel like something was being ripped from their bodies, and then something different being shoved right back in. It was a strange feeling none of them liked, but at least it was over quickly.

Once it was, Herald put down the necklace and looked around. “Is everyone all right?”

“I am,” Hot Spot answered, his voice no longer defeated. He stepped back from Jinx and Jericho so he could admire his returned powers. The coldness and stiffness in his body were gone, replaced with a warm energy, and the higher his temperature went, the more his mood improved. He was thrilled.

“I ... think I am,” Jinx agreed, though still hesitant. The sudden switch in powers left her still disoriented, but at least she wasn’t panicking anymore.

Jericho had also improved physically once je got jems powers back. Jems heat exhaustion was completely gone, and je could move without immediately weakening. To prove it, je took off the hairband Jinx had let jem use and handed it back to her.

“All of our clothes are back to normal too, so I guess that means it worked.” Kole chimed in. “All that’s left is to decide what to do with Kataoru.”

Herald thought about it for a moment, then shrugged. “I mean, we can't really take him to jail, can we? We did agree to fight him in the first place.”

“Drop him back off at the park,” Jinx suggested quickly, ready for this situation to be done with. “I think I scared him enough that he won’t try us again.”

There was a general agreement with this plan, so Herald shrugged again and went back to the medical bay.

Soon after, the group heard a fanfare echo throughout the building, and they knew that they would be able to put this all behind them in a couple of minutes. Maybe one day they might discuss everything they learned about themselves and each other like good teammates would, but at the moment, they weren’t in the mood to.

KSP Loading... Breaking Ground under the spotlight!

Welcome to our official newsletter, KSP Loading…! Do you want to learn about all the current developments of KSP? Here’s the place to be, so let’s get started!

Breaking Ground Expansion

With the release of the Kerbal Space Program: Breaking Ground Expansion just around the corner, our team is working very hard to wrap up the final details for this exciting DLC. We also thought this would be a good opportunity to dive into a little bit more depth and give you a better idea of what you can expect in Breaking Ground.

As we mentioned previously, this DLC is all about exploration, experimentation and technological breakthroughs. We want to give you more reasons to explore Kerbin’s solar system, more things to do while you’re on a celestial body and exciting new robotics parts that add a whole new level of complexity allowing you to build even more incredible crafts.

Deployed Science

This feature will allow you to deploy experiments on the surface of celestial bodies to take measurements over time. You will need to bring these experiments with you, unpack them from storage containers on your craft and set them up to run. In order to do so you will need to place a central station, one or more power generating devices and possibly a booster antenna to get your science base set up. The experiments and power generators will run better if the right kind of Kerbal sets them up, thus giving you more reasons to bring Kerbals with different professions on an adventure.

We wanted to broaden the possibilities for future development, adding a time-based mechanic with deployed science, which also introduces inventory into stock KSP. - Paul Boyle, Lead Designer

Let’s look at the equipment available for Deployed Science:

Probodobodyne Experiment Control Station

This part is crucial if you want to generate any useful data. Acting as the hub for all other experiments, the Experiment Control Station will distribute and control both power and data from nearby deployed parts, as well as coordinate the transmission of science back to Kerbin.

Mini-NUK-PD Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator

No science base will run without power, and the Mini-NUK-PD Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator will provide plenty of power to run a central station and deployed science experiments. If deployed by an engineer it will more efficient, if they are a high level one then even more.

OX-Stat-PD Photovoltaic Panel

An alternative power generator is the OX-Stat-PD Photovoltaic Panel, which will also be more efficient when properly set up by a trained engineer.

Communotron Ground HG-48

Although the Experiment Control Station has its own data transmission device, if you’re on a faraway planet, you might need to bring the Communotron Ground HG-48 antenna with you to boost the signal of your deployed science base.

Go-ob ED Monitor

The Goo Observation: Extended Duration Monitor watches the always enigmatic Mystery Goo for a long period of time on a planetary body. As with all the other deployed science experiments, the data collection speed will be increased when placed by a scientist, especially a ranked-up scientist.

PD-3 Weather Analyzer

This multi-function experiment gathers data on wind, pressure, temperature and humidity to generate a picture of the planet’s climate model over time. Naturally it will only function on a planet with an atmosphere.

Ionographer PD-22

This experiment allows Kerbals to analyze different particles and radiation incident on planetary bodies with no atmosphere.

Grand Slam Passive Seismometer

Unlike other experiments, the Grand Slam Passive Seismometer only operates under one condition… when controlled seismic events are created by crashing something into a planet. In addition to the excitement and fun of smashing things, you’ll collect data instantaneously with this device.

Surface Features

Surface features add a new component to the exploration of planets and satellites in the KSP solar system. These are items of scientific interest scattered across all celestial bodies. These features include meteorites, craters, mineral formations, and even stranger planetary oddities. Surface features vary in size and Kerbal astronauts will be able to pick up and return the smallest of them for study back at KSC. However, larger ones will need to be scanned and analyzed on-site by the newly developed Rover Arms.

Exploring celestial bodies and using rovers has never had as much value as we would have liked, and while the real Opportunity is now quietly resting on Mars, we wanted to give the players the opportunity to do more valuable science driving across Duna (and the other bodies) in KSP. So we added interesting new features to the surface of the planets that can be explored and have experiments performed on them. - Jamie Leighton, Lead Developer

Rover Arms

These parts are used to gather scientific data from surface features. The Rover Arms come in three levels that you unlock via Research and Development, each of which has more sensors and tools that allow you to collect more science from the same surface feature. Only the largest Rover Arm has the full suite of scientific instruments, so you might want to unlock that one as soon as possible!

Robotics

With Breaking Ground, you will see four types of robotic parts - hinges, pistons, rotors and rotational servos. Available in a range of shapes and sizes these new parts operate under realistic physics, with real forces and torques, electricity consumption and even motor mass accounted for. We are also including a controller part that will let you coordinate the behavior of many different parts on your craft.

Giving our community the ability to build even more complex creations might seem like a strange idea for anyone familiar with KSP, but it is something the whole team is passionate about. I’m really looking forward to seeing what people can make and animate with the new parts and controller combination. - David Tregoning, Lead Developer

Hinges

Hinges will give you a limited angle of rotation between two parts. Perfect to create jointed machines for example.

Piston

The pistons give you linear motion. If set up right, they will allow you to create all sorts of craft with hydraulic-like mechanisms.

Rotor

Not much to explain about the rotor, it will allow you to generate torque around its axis. Maybe you’ll build a spinning space station or ferris wheel with this, or any other rotational contraption you can think of.

Rotational servo

The Rotational servo will give you precise control of angular position. Using proportional control, servos have unlimited potential to create all sorts of inventions, where you want to have precise control of the position of certain parts.

KAL Controller

The KAL-1000 controller can sequence the actions of all the robotics parts, and a number of other fields. Its gives you access to a powerful track editor tool to let you set up how parts will behave over time. Using the controller, you can set up complex cranes, walking craft, disco lighting or whatever your heart desires.

The New Suit

This futuristic-looking suit was designed to match the spirit of Breaking Ground. It not only looks great on Kerbals, but its seams glow in the dark when you turn on the helmet lights!

For the spacesuit we tried a few options based on existing concepts from real life space programs, but some of those looked too slim or too sci-fi-ish. We also tried different helmets, but something felt weird about the shapes, and as the Kerbal helmet is iconic, we kept the classic shape when designing a new one. Apart from the design, we wanted to give the suit something that the others don't have: An emissive light at the seams, something that comes in handy to help find your Kerbals when they are far from the sun or on the dark side of a planet! At first, we thought skinning the accordion arms would be problematic, but we managed to do it, and we are pretty happy with the result. Additions to the base game

With the release of Breaking Ground, the base game is also getting some updates that will add a few new features.

For starters, the inventory mechanic that is used by deployed science will be available in the base code, for modders to use and extend as they wish.

Additionally, we're adding two extensions to our action group system. The first one adds another type of action group for controls that let you bind input controls to fields - an axis group. The second adds Action Sets, which allow you to enable or disable sets of axis or action groups.

This extends what you can do with a limited number of keys, letting you put your craft into different modes of operation. You can even override the base controls with the action set feature, further fine tuning the interface between you and your craft. We developed these extensions to give players more options to control their robotics, but it certainly will be useful for stock and modded players as well.

Finally, we’ve added EVA portraits, so that you can check data on your Kerbals even when they’re out and about.

Season 4, Episode 5 - Spy for a Spy

Well, it’s building up for something to go down, so, uh, here we go.

I just wrote episodes 2-5 reactions in one evening, and I didn’t even finish episode 2 for a month. That is the state of my … what is the appropriate word here?

[21:01] I swear, whoever is doing the vocal editing needs to consider volume. The echoing effect they seem to love is making it sound like there’s no such thing as an inside voice, and I’m going to complain about it every time. It’s my reaction, and if it bugs me, of course I’ll write that down.

its 2 fkin am and i wrote a thing????? way longer than i planned lol

m!ortega/m!sidestep, post-alley kiss in retribution.

It’s dark. You know maybe it’s a little dangerous to be out here at night without your armor or the protection of a...friend. But you don’t care. You simply look like a pedestrian sitting on a bench, having a smoke. No one can tell you’re still shaking. No one can tell you’re still feeling the panic attack from earlier. No….last night? Time moves differently in a panic attack.

Reluctantly, you pull your phone out of your pocket, watching the screen light up. 3 missed calls. You thought there’d be more, honestly. It seems Ortega is trying to honor your wish for space…

You sigh heavily, burying your face in your hands. You can still feel his fingers on your back, his hands on your bare skin. Tear start to well, unbidden, and you stubbornly wipe them on your sleeve. You’re not even sure why you’re crying right now. You thought you’d gotten it out of your system earlier. Emotions never did like to play by the rules.

Running a hand through your hair, you hold your cigarette in your mouth and take a deep breath...and dial Ortega’s number.

Sitting here, anxiously bouncing your leg and running your hand through your hair over and over, you know you must look a little crazy. And maybe you are. You’ve been so careful, but Ortega….something about him turns off all common sense. You’re startled so bad when you hear his voice that you almost drop your phone.

“Teigue?” He sounds...nervous. Worried. He always sounds worried.

You clear your throat, your voice catching when you try to speak. “Uh...hi….uhm…” Shit, do you sound as breathless as you think?

“Are you okay?”

You shake your head, even though you know he can’t see. You leg is bouncing even more now, nerves alight as you gather courage to… Christ, it really has always been this hard to talk about your feelings, hasn’t it? Your therapist appointment left you frayed and ragged, and Ortega’s kiss….his hands….it just sent you that little bit over the edge. Feelings are...the worst.

“Teigue? You still there?” Ortega’s voice sounds more concerned now and you smack yourself. You didn’t want that.

“Yeah, I, uhm….I wanted to...uh…” You pause to take a breath, to take a long, final drag from your cigarette before flicking into a puddle in the gutter. “Sorry.” The word sounds like a whisper.

Ortega takes a breath to reply, but you don’t let him. You already know he’s going to tell you you don’t have to be sorry.

“I just….I wanted to talk about yesterday.” The words are rushed and you’re not even sure you spoke them in English. You bury your face in your free hand. Why is talking so fucking hard?

“I’m listening,” is all Ortega says in reply, but it’s enough. It’s what you needed to spur you on.

Taking a deep, steadying breath--as shaky as it is--and speak. You force yourself to speak. “It’s not your fault. I just...wanted you to, uh...to know that first.” He doesn’t fill the pause you leave him. “I’m sorry, I just...I just freaked out. I don’t...touching is….” You sigh heavily. Why did you think you could do this?

“It’s okay. I’m sorry, I crossed a line…” You can tell he wants to say more, so you wait, but it seems he’s waiting for you to respond.

It takes all your energy to muster a grunt.

“Are you okay?”

That’s a heavy question, now, isn’t it? You don’t really know how to answer but something inside is yelling at you to just be honest.

“No…” The sniffle you add isn’t fake. Christ, of course you’re crying. Your head hurts, you still feel like you have too much anxious energy, like your body is three sizes too big to fit in your skin… You shake your head slowly, burying your face in the crook of your elbow, your sleeve catching your tears. You hadn’t noticed you weren’t holding the phone to your ear anymore until Ortega’s voice is louder. Startled, you bring it back, struggling to find your voice.

“Teigue? Can you hear me? Are you still there? Please, talk to me, Teigue. Please-”

“Sorry, sorry, I’m here, sorry…”

The sigh of relief he lets out is heavy. “Where are you? Are you home?”

Looking around, you suddenly realize you don’t really know where you are. It’s not somewhere you usually go, not that you keep usual haunts these days. But you haven’t been around here before. “No, I uh...I don’t know where I am,” you admit slowly, trying to keep the anxiety still spiking through you from latching onto this thought.

You try to pretend Ortega doesn’t sound even more concerned when he replies.

“Are you outside? Can you find street names? Buildings? Anything notable?” He’s jumped into crisis management mode--the next step is hero mode and you know he’d run across the whole city to keep you safe if he had to. “I’ll come get you if you need it.”

You start walking, rubbing your eyes to clear the dryness, the itchiness your crying has left, and looking for an intersection. As you round the corner of a larger skyscraper, you recognize the area. “I’m uhm...I’m near Memorial Park, I think. A few blocks away, maybe…”

“I’ll be there soon,” he promises.

“‘Kay…” Is all you can muster before hanging up. Despite your unease, you feel a little calmer knowing someone’s coming to your rescue.

When you finally arrive at the park, you find an unoccupied bend and nearly collapse into it. Your body feels heavy, and you may as well have dragged yourself here. Exhaustion sits in your very bones, and you pull up the collar of your drab olive military jacket. You wish you’d worn a hoodie today, but you weren’t exactly in your right mind when you left your apartment. Did you even make it back home yesterday? You don’t really remember, and that’s disconcerting. You’re no stranger to panic attacks. You know how disorienting they can be. But you can’t afford to get lost like this. You can’t afford to lose yourself to your mind. Not anymore. You feel the pull of sleep dragging you into darkness when a hand rests on your shoulder. You snap up, eyes wide with panic, arms raised in defense before Ortega’s voice fills your ears. He brushes your hair from your eyes and you can see the worry clearly written on his face.

You can’t help it. You practically throw yourself at him. You’re tired and you don’t feel good and you’re still buzzing with residual anxiety and that’s what you’ve decided to blame your actions on.

He catches you, because of course he does. His arms are strong and tight and safe around you. You feel safe. You feel okay. It’s….odd, that he has that effect on you.

He pulls back for a moment, taking you in. You must look worse than you thought, if the furrow in his brow is anything to go by. “Let’s get you home, okay?” He wraps a steady arm around you and you suddenly feel ashamed at needing help. His help.

You shake your head, hair falling in your face. “I don’t….I don’t wanna be alone…” Your voice is practically a whimper.

He just holds you tighter. “Okay, that’s all right. We’ll go to my place, okay? You’ve got clean clothes there still.”

A nod. You think you nodded. You can’t find your voice, so you hope you nodded. Your lip is quivering and if you opened your mouth you know all that would come out is a strangled cry. You don’t want to be alone. But you’re not sure you want to be around someone else. Does Ortega override that? You’re not sure yet. He overrides a lot of things… All you can manage to do right now is hold onto him and let him help you. You know you need it.

anyway, so - Eddie and Foxy

(oh I’m sorry you thought I was DONE?)

(actually I really am sorry - I know I have other messages and tagged posts waiting and I promise I’ve seen them and I really do wanna respond! I just -

~FEELINGS)

Can I just say - this little line -

Foxy: Heard you were dead, Ed

Because the delivery makes me smile okay? It’s the way Foxy puts a slight emphasis on ‘Ed’ - kinda like he’s TRYING to EMPHASISE THE RHYME?

A little bit of Eddie’s theatrics rubbing off on him? Or Foxy tailoring his speech/behaviour to match Eddie’s? Either way I find it very, very cute :)

Other things that are super cute - this moment -

When they visit the crime scene and Foxy deliberately hangs back to give Ed space to investigate - silently acknowledging that Ed is more capable.

But ALSO - we see Foxy watching with the above curious, maybe slightly nervous, expression. And I imagine a variety of things crossing his mind in that moment.

A touch of anxiety perhaps - that he’s making a mistake working with a known felon and murderer, is it morally/ethically sound?; that Ed won’t, or worse can’t, help him, because how will the GCPD ever stop the bomber and bring Haven justice then?

But alongside all that it also looks, to me, like Foxy is kinda nervously excited to see what Ed uncovers, to watch Ed work. I mean, it’s not fanboy level interest or anything like that! But I do get a sense of personal interest from Foxy. We’re not quite Watson eagerly waiting on Holmes’ deduction, but we’re in the vicinity!

Basically - there’s a nice level of quiet anticipation in Foxy here that I really love.

And it’s followed up by Foxy tiling his head and prompting Ed by saying his name - not softly, but not impatiently either. It’s a sort of firm but questioning - ‘Ed?’ and the tone suggests to me a dual worry that Ed might be stalling and isn’t going to help (putting Foxy on the edge of distrust/impatience) and also that, for whatever reason (ie. his mental heath issues or his current physical condition), Ed is too unwell to help and may be on the verge of collapse or a breakdown (nudging up Foxy’s compassion and/or pity). It’s Foxy trying to figure out if he should be berating Ed or tending to him, basically!

Then ofc Ed launches into ‘Detective Mode’ (Arkham Games pun there :p) and Foxy relaxes and joins in and they both happily lose themselves in the science of it all :)

(no wait, couldn’t you technically, actually, literally call it ‘Partners in Crime’ ie. crime solving?? omg wordplay is the best)

And and - there’s a couple of moments during the deduction when both of them get mildly frustrated with each other, but it’s mitigated by the overriding respect each of them are feeling for the other as well -

1) Foxy’s weary response to Ed gleefully comparing the crime scene to a ‘classic locked room mystery’ and beginning his theatrical summary of exactly what a locked room mystery is. You can just HEAR Foxy thinking ‘oh god, another riddle/performance, can’t he just get to the point?’

Except moments later Foxy is actually engaging with Ed’s ‘performance’ - giving the correct ‘answer’ to a locked room mystery (ie. that the killer was already in the room) and going on to ask Ed, GENUINELY CURIOUS, if that means the bomb was already in the building. Seriously, I swear Foxy doesn’t look mad or impatient when he asks the question, he’s back to being properly lost in the puzzle and eager for Ed’s insight.

2) After Ed has offered his explanation/theory, in true theatrical fashion, about the oil drum (or whatever it was) being used as a bomb, Foxy offers his piece of glass as a possible rebuttal (also somewhat theatrically now I think about it since he deliberately offers it without explanation, forcing a follow up question from Ed - more adoption of Ed’s mannerisms?). Ed just looks at him and there’s a touch, I think, of suppressed disdain in his voice when he answers - ‘glass?’ Because Foxy is not only questioning the genius of Ed’s deduction, he’s also just messed up Ed’s performance by failing to applaud, or the equivalent of.

And yet, the disdain IS SUPPRESSED and tempered by GENUINE CURIOSITY. Ed isn’t just dismissive of Foxy, despite maybe wanting to be. He is also very much ACTUALLY ASKING for Foxy’s explanation, because he respects Foxy enough to know that whatever Foxy is bringing to his attention actually probably IS relevant.

...they go on to speak in tandem after that <3 perfect timing, having gone on a whole intellectual back and forth that has been bringing them slowly closer and closer until they are perfectly united :)

One very last thing! (...for now :p)

This is Eddie’s reaction to Foxy giving him the folder ie. the thing he was desperate for when they started and the reason he agreed to partner up with Foxy in the first place (oh damn, this plot and Jim and Ozzie’s plot were ACTUAL MIRRORS of each other this episode - Jim and Foxy both agreeing to ‘partner’ with their respective Rogue, should have twigged that sooner!)

Anyway, this comes after Ed has given his heartfelt speech about hoping Foxy finds whoever is responsible and makes them pay.

The caps really don’t do the reaction justice, because Eddie is honestly SO SHOCKED/SURPRISED at being handed the folder. It’s like... like his big speech was intended as his goodbye. There’s certainly a sense of finality to it. Eddie saying ‘this is where we part ways.’ Meaning, guys, I swear, by this point -

EDDIE HAD FORGOTTEN ABOUT THE FOLDER!!

He’d got so swept up in the investigation (and spending time with Foxy?) that it had became his sole focus. He was no longer helping for the reward, he was helping BECAUSE HE WANTED TO.

...and sure, maybe it’s largely because he got invested in the mystery/puzzle of it. But the way he gets so sombre at the end makes me think there was a fair part of him that was shocked/sickened by the bombing enough to want to help in order to get justice for it as well

(he’s like Ozzie in that way perhaps - sickened and honestly wanting justice, but also happy to capitalise on the aftermath of the tragedy for personal benefit ie. Ozzie sets himself up as more of a hero because he enjoys the love of the people it provides him (and enjoys spending time with Jim?) while Eddie helps solve the crime because he enjoys the puzzle of it (and enjoys spending time with Foxy?)... maybe maybe...)

But anyway, however you break it down, Eddie ended up caring more about solving a puzzle with Foxy than getting his prize and I - *clutches heart*

Gonna end with this look Foxy gives Ed after giving him the folder.

Summary: After years of solitude, you sought out the color of life – you just didn’t think it would end up like this. (Enhanced!Reader/Steve Rogers).

A/N: This is for @captain-ariel-barnes writing challenge. We are getting closed to the end and the revelations of the MC’s background, please enjoy Tony’s chapter! As always, I am sorry if it sucks.

It starts before you even plan on going, the thought so many people around you send shivers down your spine like spider webs. You don’t paint for anything, just sit in the silence of your painting room for days. The dreams made of color are coming back stronger than before, which only causes your headaches to come back stronger than ever before. You knew this was a possibility when you took up the Avengers project, but you didn’t expect it to hurt this much.

You hate your powers and though you had accepted the hurt, you still disliked being around people.

My diamond. My dear girl, you’ll change everything for us.

You groan at the memory, ready to scream as pink darkens to nearly a solid red, but before anything else can happen a voice echoes loudly--

“Mr. Stark has agreed to be shadowed for the following week,” F.R.I.D.A.Y’s voice rings out in the little room, as you groan in acceptance.

You let out a choked sob, as you can hear someone knocking at the door but you can’t find the will to get up or say anything at the moment. You were going to into the city for the first time in a long time, and you knew deep down this wouldn’t turn out well.

If you need anything, just holler. We’re not that far away.

It’s only been a couple of hours since you had been picked up by the driver you have meet before --Happy?-- but you are already trying to find a million different ways to ground yourself at the onslaught of color that begins to blur as you enter the city. Streaks of colors and flashes of all kinds of emotions make you feel nauseous, as you lean against the window and groan.

You try to think of Wanda’s cooking and her subtle smile with Vision. You hope that the sound of Sam’s laughter drowns out everything else. You try to take yourself to the grassy area and the smell of wood and flowers that you were so used to, but also a smell of aftershave and cologne that you were sure belonged to Captain Rogers.

You let out a steady sigh, as the car stops and Happy declares with a cautious green light: “Welcome to the Avengers Tower!”

You get out the back of the car, starting at the dark monochrome glory in front of you with a frown, as you try your hardest to ignore that glittering colored lights moving on the sidewalks. You pull your canvas bag closer to you than before, in a means to protect yourself.

“How are you enjoying New York?” Pepper can’t help but ask, as the three of you share a quick breakfast in their shared floor level in the Avengers Tower. You were supposed to follow Mr. Stark for the whole week, the first two were full with board meetings and time with Pepper Potts -- not that it bothered you.

“Not much,” you remark as her red flounders for a bit in worry, “I’m really more of a country gal.”

“Don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll be back in no time,” Tony grins, as you can’t help but be for a confused for a moment, “I am sure a certain Captain is missing you right now.”

You raise a curious eyebrow at this statement, as Pepper glares at her fiance. Outside of that, breakfast moves forward without a hitch, as you come to realize the sight of the couple, as their colors pop and mingle in response to each other is extremely relaxing. It lulls you into a false sense of security for those business meetings you are suppose to be shadowing.

Men with darker colors that send chills up your spine, though there are those that shine like the sun as they talk about finance and the new philanthropy that Stark Industries is looking towards creating for the city and beyond that. Everyone sparkles in their own way, especially Mr. Stark, even when he isn’t talking but one bright, determined light outshines everyone else.

It isn’t until close to end of the second day when you realize that all you had been sketching or designing had been related to Pepper Potts in some way, but Tony had and honestly he couldn’t blame you. So, at the end of the last meeting, when you are ready to head back to the Tower and they are going to grab a late dinner, he stops you.

“You know,” Tony starts off with a smile, “I am sure Pepper would be thrilled if you ever decided to create something personally for her.”

You smile just how his shade of red changes to match her own -- love really was a beautiful thing.

“I’m already thinking about it, Mr. Stark,” you declare softly, as you had already been thinking about seashells and autumn leaves back from upstate New York.

“Ah, good job, kid.”

You spend the next couple of days shadowing Mr. Stark on his own -- watching him do a number of philanthropist events, giving speeches here and there, hanging out with Dr. Banner in the lab (much to your confusion), and endless tinkering with his suits as if he preparing for a mission, even though he --like Captain Rogers-- were in limited capacity to what they could thanks to the Accords.

You think in reds and different shades of gold with bright flashes of circuitry on what you could create in regards to Tony Stark. You didn’t think everyday gray would be important until Friday afternoon when he has you sitting in some rehabilitation building. You look around for a moment, as Mr. Stark tells you to wait.

That’s when you see it -- gray with a red core are burns intensely. You try stop yourself from gaping at the sight of Colonel James Rhodes, as he walks up to you with a warm and familiar smile with Tony simply introduces him as Rhodey.

“Ah, you’re the artist Pepper and S--” Rhodey starts off, only to have Tony give him a look, “I mean, Pepper and Tony are so fond off. Finally good to put a name to the face.”

“It’s an honor to meet you, Colonel Rhodes,” you admit, as he pulls out his hand for you to shake it. You return it only to feel something you had never felt before.

Pop! Pop! Pop!

Something akin to rocky candy pops on your skin, as you shake hands with the man. He gives you a questioning look, gray moving in a way you had never seen before, but you simply smile and try to stay come at whatever might be happening. You say nothing and neither does Rhodey, as Tony moves forward with telling you stories of their youth together. However, you keep your body more reigned in than before.

You feel that your aversion to seeing people’ colors has calmed down during the week, but you have grown scared of touching anything since the incident with Colonel Rhodes. You haven’t slept well since you have been trying to figure out exactly what was going on with you, though now you were trying to figure out why the shy Stark intern had such a strange pattern of light red -- in thin strips and entangled together, like a spider’s web. However, before you can do anything else, he’s out the door with a nervous chuckle and a wave.

Peter Parker was a strange, though endearing kid.

“Are you going tonight’s party?” Mr. Stark’s voice takes you out of your thoughts, as he smile for a bit at the sight of spiders drawn on the corners of your sketchpad.

“I don’t think that’s good idea, Mr. Stark,” you complain lightly, as Tony just shakes his head. “Especially if you want to make me some type of special guest, I really don’t like that type of stuff.”

“ Just like, ” Tony sighs out, as you stare at him in confusion,”Look, I won’t out you, especially before the project is over. But, wouldn’t it be nice to take a break?”

You frown for a moment, knowing that he has a point and he is paying you but you know something bad will come out of this -- it always does.

You agree nonetheless to see Mr. Stark give you a cheeky grin and a pop of flashy red for a job well done.

An hour, you last one whole hour between the twirling lights and endless darkness of the party before someone tries to grab you.

It burns, as you let out a silent scream and proceed to leave the room, running towards where you had been staying in the Avengers Tower, unaware that someone was watching the whole time.

Steve arrives to the Towers towards the weekend after a short mission and while he is tired, he is also excited to be back home and if he was being truthful -- to have a certain someone near the city as well. Steve knew that you were more accustomed to the New York countryside, but he was still that kid from Brooklyn and was hopeful to maybe show you around the city -- to show you the some new things and what he had learned since coming out of the ice. But, it seemed like Tony had other plans for you.

Steve begins to settle in for the night after the debrief when he hears it. The rush of a familiar set of footsteps as a certain someone runs to where one of the many bathrooms is located. Mother hen mode kicking in, Steve grabs a water bottle and a towel before running to where you are-- his sensitive hearing picking up the retching sounds and he can’t help but wonder what had happened.

He picks up his pace, only to see the bathroom door is open and you are sitting on the floor next to the opening of the shower. Steve wishes there was better time to tell you how pretty you look in that navy blue dress, but your safety overrides everything else at the moment. You are letting out heavy breathes and there are tears running down your face, as you let out a small moan of pain.

“Hey, hey,” Steve walks into the bathroom and kneels at your side,”What’s wrong? What happened?”

“Too much feeling, c-color, ” you manage to say, but it doesn’t make much sense to him.

You grasp his hand and groan at the worry and mixed bag of emotions that you suddenly feel, as his blue wanes from dark to light blue like an ocean might. You sigh at the familiarity of it all, but you’re still too hypersensitivity from the party to do anything more, as Steve starts to question.

“Did you eat or drink something?” Steve asks cautiously, as you shake your head.

“Is it because of your powers?” he asks again, as you place his cool hand on your cheek. Steve can’t help but double over for a moment at the sudden wave of nauseous he’s feeling, as you give him a soft smile -- almost in relief that some of the feeling has left you.

You only nod meekly, before blacking out completely.

Bigass TFE infodump specifically about the main character and so it’s really flipping long part 2: it ain’t over ‘til the talonflame sings.

Read that first or this is not gonna make sense.

For a good long page spread or two, there’s nothing. Flatline. But then, ever so slightly--a pulse.

It quickens and consumes the page and suddenly it’s all black, pitch black, and oh god what the hell why is she still conscious.

Being buried alive is not fun. It is especially not fun when it was intentional but instinct overrides that with the will of a thousand suns. And so before long Serena has clawed her way out of the wreckage, even though the parts of her that aren’t numb feel like they’ve been run through a flaming trash compactor, and is this real? Is this actually really real? Is the afterlife just an extended being alive simulator?

(I have definitely drawn this scene at least twice before but my files are being picky and refusing to show me shit. Instead you get this melodramatic past-3am-narration. Bear with me.)

The afterlife, however, probably doesn’t have screeching birds. Scree, that damn talonflame companion of Malva’s, circles overhead, and upon noticing Serena it’s quick to land and start yelling at her instead.

Of course, Scree doesn’t talk. (Yes, its name was an in-universe joke that stuck.) Serena can ask all she wants what it wants or why it’s here. All she gets is the screaming bird and the surrounding heap of rubble, land by a ledge blasted out into a mess of rocks and dirt and gaunt, twisted metal.

Serena is certain she should be way more messed up than she is, even with one leg bending ways it shouldn’t. Part of her face and left palm are numb still--a sharp contrast to the surrounding areas--which is almost reassuring until she notices the skin on said palm is raw.

Not gonna lie, half the reason this isn’t worse is because... well, it’s a comic. It doesn’t look pretty and I could really do without looking at gory image search results. :T Aforementioned drawings are just sketches. I could only get away with stylistic silhouettes for so long while conveying expression. Ah well, unless I ever get around to drawing this scene out again, you can fill in the blanks however much you want.

What was it, that throwaway healing potion? The machine was set to destruct, wasn’t it? That should have overrid--unless.

Oh, she’s an idiot. Maybe the ultimate weapon and the immortality machine weren’t separate devices, or even one device on different modes. No wonder the old stories were so vague. One single blast--destruction to half of Kalos, a “gift” to those at its core. (Of course, the myths never mentioned getting flayed alive, but then it might not have survived so many generations.)

At this point Serena notices Malva nearby; whether she’s been dragged over by a determined talonflame or just happened to land in a similar place is unclear. (This was admittedly kinda bullshit and maybe some solo trekking was due. Rule of Drama...?) The woman is facedown and isn’t moving; despite being further from the blast she’s not looking great either. Lucky her.

But the bird will not shut up. Why? Serena can barely yell back, but she’s baffled. Sure, she set off the explosion, but Malva was about to do the same thing. And at least Malva could admit to being a terrible person. It’s better off this way.

Yet still the bird cries. Again: what’s the point? All right, say Malva lived. Say this isn’t some nightmare and they’re both alive, and they’re both stranded hell knows where. The second they show their faces to society again they’re getting arrested for life if not killed on sight. (Can they even be killed now? Serena doesn’t want to entertain the idea.) It’d be better that way. It would. No one would--

Scree, unsatisifed but silenced, swoops away and sits by its master. There, good riddance. Maybe it finally accepted she’s dead. The bird ducks its head--a vigil.

A freaking vigil. For her.

Not on command. Not necessarily because it thinks she was good, and certainly not trying to look good itself. Just because it can, and because it cares.

Something deep in Serena’s psyche snaps. Wearily she drags herself to her feet, unsteady as hell but still almost standing. Scree looks up, and with renewed vigor it helps pull Serena up, over to Malva Lorraine--former Elite Four member, reporter, Fleur Foundation supporter, reluctant Project X lead, the first “wild child” of Kalos. Serena would like to give a spontaneous eulogy, something flowery and emotional, except she’s never been good at writing and her thought process is still something along the lines of “when will it stop hurting” (albeit much less coherent).

Nonetheless, she at least tries to turn Malva’s head over--only to notice a twitch. Surprise the second! After all, AZ’s floette wasn’t the only one immortalized. Son of a...

You may have noticed that some spoiler Serena doodles feature one hand only, and not just from angle and/or cropping. As it turns out, the process of digging someone free from a big scrap heap can dislodge stuff, and--

(6/20/2017; decidedly not canon)

I mean, it could have been the whole arm to really drive home the parallel, but I was feeling nice.

Naturally, the scrap is big and heavy enough that it won’t budge. But OH WELL. After some “deliberation” Serena remembers how Malva lost her arm in the first place, and... hey, Scree, those talons are still sharp, right?

There’s a decisively timed cut (HAR. HAR.) to what the other characters are up to around here, but of most importance is that Fletcher, flying in search of survivors over a dismally silent landscape of ash and ruin, suddenly hears someone getting strangled alive. Or something to that effect. Regardless, yay, a sign of life!

(11/9/2017; again note the severely downplayed damages for the sake of me not dying at my tablet.)

With the gritty details skipped as much as possible, the scene back on Serena finds her with a (severely) bloody fabric scrap around her right forearm. Her leg is still bent in ways it shouldn’t be but after that, to heck with it, might as well be a stubbed toe.

Whether it’s an adrenaline high, life blast fuel, or flat-out stupidity, Serena does not care. After everything, she and Malva are not dying, for better or worse. She decided a long time ago she wasn’t just going to curl up in the fetal position and take it, and if that means walking towards eternal damnation imprisonment like a zombie, back to the sunrise... so be it. Even if no one cares, at least they’ll find some sign of a fight.

Malva, for her part, is phasing in and out of consciousness. But when she’s around, she can only give Serena a baffled look--anything she might want to say, questions she’d ask, have clearly already occurred to this kid, and the answer is fuck you.

(3/3/2017; yes, I got the arm Malva’s missing wrong. Her design was decidedly not “finalized.”)

They’re not alone for long. Fletcher catches up, says some things Serena barely hears; the rush is fading. There are shapes ahead, moving shapes, ever blurry, vaguely recognizable voices... The last thing Serena thinks is I’m not dying yet before she collapses, unconscious.

It wouldn’t be right to leave off here without some indication of a resolution or epilogue. But, uh, I don’t exaaactly have one. I do, however, have vague ideas for where characters end up, and although Serena and Malva’s are mixed up with a big dose of “how would the French legal system (or any legal system really) deal with people essentially blowing up half a city, especially when one is a minor,” neither are escaping the fallout any time soon. They don’t really want to, at this point, much as it kinda sucks. Was nothing learned?

I mean, okay, arguably there wasn’t. This all sounds very grand and dramatic in my head, but you know, the buildup is... messy. But essentially, Serena needs to

stop running from her problems,

stop thinking of herself as irredeemable,

not get so deep into self-hatred spirals she gives herself more reasons to think the latter, and

generally just learn to accept the hell, ramifications on character and consequences and all.

The idea I’m going for is that, in setting up ~parallels~ between Serena and Malva and building to this, in... maybe not forgiving Malva but at least deciding she’s not better off dead and forgotten & accepting that someone actually gives a shit about her, Serena does the same for herself by extension. Whooo. Parallels and projection for everyone~!

As mentioned in the tags, I still really like this idea. If some form of TFE ever rises again (har har see what I did there phoenix puns har) I am prooobably keeping some kind of relationship like this as the climactic crux. Ideally with more development along the way, too; I like to think what I had in TFE was good, and as mentioned before even this two-part text wall of hell is only a summary, but it can always be better. There could definitely be fewer characters overall, and--

Right, right, you’re probably not here for me ranting about my own writing. (Though, again, if you are, by all means ask.) Point is you know how building towards an end is sometimes a good way to plot things out instead of throwing stuff together and seeing where it goes, the latter of which is my usual method? Yeah. I Just Really Like This Moment.

And Now for some ~*~BONUS FACTOIDS~*~

Serena has two voiceclaims: first Griffin Gluck and more “recently” (still like... at least a year ago) Josh Kennedy, and the latter makes me lose my fucking shit because she would never say 99% of the stuff in any of his vines ever. Not even this one, although she also has “cool guy syndrome.”

As noted in Flynn’s bio, Serena is 5′00″, which seemed tall to me at the time of “finalizing” and then I realized no wait what the fuck it’s really not; TFE‘s cast has a severe case of “adults are always taller than The Youth” syndrome, with like one exception sometimes.

When fully-grown Serena is 6′00″, so eh, that’ll work. shut up what do you mean I don’t have a post-TFE storyline so it’s not like any of these developments are any more “canon” than Word of Author. what do you mean the entire rest of the story is kinda Word of Author in and of itself because it wasn’t actually drawn out uh help

I’ve mentioned before that early (as in “just starting out with headcanon hell”) development XY protag was a snarky shit. This still baffles me because even at her most cynical Serena does not get sarcasm. The snarkiest she gets are at her sleep-deprivation-fueled “oh yeah sure NOW you're paying attention to me“ ranting. Even then, Shauna’s sense of humor (which consists of 420% sarcasm and 99.999% shitpostesque nonsense) would fly over Serena’s head.

By virtue of being one of my oldest characters whose development didn’t get a significant hiatus (other than like... nowadays, TFE being sorta-over-ish until theoretical rewrite and all), Serena’s probably one of my most developed losers. It shows in the doodle distribution and probably this monster of a rambledump. Like, yeah, protagonist, but still.

Despite this I have no heckening clue how her hair or eyes would look realistically. I miiiiight have, starting out way back when? Maybe. A little. It’s gone now.

I am still not over the comments on this post. I don’t think I will ever be over these fucking comments.

First time flying a drone? Don’t make these mistakesWe’ve all done it, we immediately tried to take to the sky with a new drone, promptly crashing. It is easy to make a mistake flying your new quadcopter, so here are a few of the most common errors and what we recommend you do to avoid them. Luckily, the majority of mistakes on our list are the sort of common sense stuff that will make perfect sense to avoid when you recognize the situation. The problems may be straight-forward, but you might be surprised at how and when they show up — allow us to help you prepare for most potential eventualities from the sky.

In addition to previous changes to the FAA’s drone regulations, you are now required to display your drone registration number on the outside of your drone. Marker, sticker or engraving, however you want to affix it, just make sure it’s visible. Further, the FAA now also requires you to receive authorization before you fly in controlled airspace, check out the list of apps that provide LAANC authorization for both commercial and hobby flights. Most drones do not come with a set of instructions on what you are and are not allowed to do with them. This is not a problem in most places around the globe, but in the United States, every craft that weighs 0.55 pounds or more must be registered and follow strict aeronautical guidelines. You need to use the LAANC tool, found within apps like Airmap or KittyHawk. The FAA has a list of no-fly-zone areas that should help you keep safe and legal.If you are flying for pay, or any other form of compensation, you must operate under a different set of rules and possess a commercial drone license. We call it the Part 107, it’s not too hard to get, but it will take some time to learn all the rules. Have a good attitudeNot just an approach for a healthy lifestyle, there are certain attitudes that lead to risks when flying your drone. The FAA specifically calls these out in their materials, what I’m saying is, if you are studying for your Part 107 certification exam, pay attention, here are some of the answers.According to the FAA you should avoid the following attitudes:Antiauthority – A tendency to believe the rules do not apply to you. Impulsivity – Unwisely taking action before thinking through the result.Machoism – A “hold my beer, I got this!” mentality, taking unnecessary risks. Resignment – A misbelief that you have no control over a situation.In the end, the FAA is saying that you are the pilot, you are in control, and you need to conduct yourself safely and thoughtfully. It’s not like you have to log your complete flight plan before take-off or anything, just follow the rules and establish a personal set of guidelines for your flight — maybe you’ll decide to stay within an area, avoid the trees over there and remember that there are powerlines and people off to your left.A more proactive action you can take is to set the max altitude setting in your drone app, it’s probably at 400 feet now. If your planned flight requires airspace authorization that only allows you to go up to 200 feet, go ahead and set that limit in the app and then you know you’ll stay legal.

First of all, you may be flying a drone at very low altitudes, with a high tree canopy above; sounds like no problem until the RTH feature initiates and you learn the hard way that it has a rather high automatic flight altitude. Most RTH modes take your drone to 60 feet (~20 meters) or more.

I had an experience once where I was manually landing a drone, I had it no more than 18-inches from the ground and was actually just hitting the joystick to take it down when the low-battery RTH mode kicked in. The drone shot 60 feet into the air, maneuvered less than 3 feet over and came back down to auto land. This drone did not allow me to override the RTH, I was at the absolute mercy of the auto-pilot – luckily I was taught to avoid taking off anywhere that has an obstacle above, but still, the neighboring trees were a lot closer than I wanted them. I never wanted that drone to go above 6 feet for that flight.

RTH produces another risk – this one should be more straight forward: most drones recognize that they are at point A, and home is at point B, if there is no obstacle avoidance sensors on the craft, you best ensure there are no obstacles between your drone and where it calls home.

Grounded Theory and Photography

For my MA Photography project, I am considering the use of Grounded Theory as a research methodology that I can apply to my photographic data collection and analysis. Before I can implement this research paradigm, it is important to consider its suitability for use in a photographic project. This article will examine how a photography project can generate a theory which demonstrates the potential of Grounded Theory for the medium.

Robert Frank’s The Americans: the creation of a theory of place in photography

Grounded Theory is a qualitative research methodology that was first revealed to academia by Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss in their ground-breaking work The Discovery of Grounded Theory (1967). Strauss’s successor and collaborator Juliet Corbin summarises Grounded Theory as

‘… a form of research the purpose of which is to construct theory from data. The methodology is carried out through a set of data gathering and analytic procedures. Procedures should be used flexibly and reflect the analytic task at hand. Researchers can’t pick and choose among the procedures deciding to use some and discard others. It is the flexible use of procedures that lead to the development of rich and dense theory that fits the data and that offers insight and solutions to the issues and problems of participants.’ (Corbin, 2017)

Whilst Grounded Theory was originally used in nursing studies, it has now become widely applied across academic disciplines. This article will explore the appropriateness of Grounded Theory as a framework for photographic research. It will not provide cases of photographers using Grounded Theory as there is no explicit evidence in the literature that photographers have consciously applied the paradigm but will illustrate its suitability for photography by showing how artists can built theories within their work. To do this, we will examine the clearest and most well-known example of a photographer creating a theory – Robert Frank’s The Americans (2008).

The Americans and its Theory of America

Frank’s The Americans (2008), first published in 1958, was not initially popular, and the majority of reviews were critical. Yet, it has come to be regarded as a seminal work of documentary photography. Uniquely at the time, the work was not solely about aesthetics or creating a single narrative but constructed a theory of America. The book is not an ode to American, but is,

‘…ambiguous, destabilized, ‘moving’ photography that engages the viewer in a dialogical process rather than transmitting a ready-made story with its pre-packaged values and assumptions.’ (Campbell, 2003, p. 214)

The book turns a critical eye on America and that America is, most particularly, one of flags, of automobiles, jukeboxes, and religion, and of racism. It must be noted that Frank’s theory of America does extend beyond the three features above, but for the necessity of brevity, this article will focus on these alone. For greater exploration, the reader is encouraged to engage with The Americans itself as well as Robert Frank's 'The Americans': The Art of Documentary Photography (Day, 2011).

Flags

Robert Frank - Parade – Hoboken, New Jersey (1955/56)

The Stars and Stripes is central to the arrangement of the book (Day, 2011, pp. 71-76). They are the placeholders that begin each new ‘chapter’ (p. 71). In each of the images that feature the flag, the people present are subordinate to it. For example, in the opening image of the book Parade – Hoboken, New Jersey, Day notes that the women in the image are

‘… marginalized, cramped into the corners of the composition. They appear no more important in the image’s visual hierarchy than the wall which divides them. These women are fitted into this block not because it suits them or is a desirable residence, but because there is nowhere else they can go.’ (p. 72)

As we proceed through the book, the flags continue to appear. For example, in Fourth of July – Jay, New York, a tattered flag overshadows a party, yet the participants are seemingly unaware of its presence. In the last image to feature a flag, the amusing Political rally – Chicago (the second image in the book to carry the name), the bandsman is subsumed by his sousaphone: the instrument dominates and his identity is hidden (pp. 75-76). In Frank’s America, flags are a constant theme, and even if the responses of those featured in the images are not consistent (p. 76), the people themselves are always of secondary importance.

Automobiles, Jukeboxes and Religion

Frank’s America has three religions: Christianity, jukeboxes and cars. Christianity, represented by crosses both real and implied, features throughout the book. Juxtaposed against this are both the automobiles, which are not new, but are ‘older models, junked cars, or accidents on the side of the road’ (Mortenson, 2014, p. 425), and the jukeboxes which serves as altars for people of every background. The country worships before all three.

Robert Frank – Political Rally – Chicago (1955/56)

Political Rally – Chicago (the first image to carry the name) is the first of the implied crosses to feature. The figure, with arms spread wide and high, appears almost crucified on the cross formed by the window above. His expression is either triumphant or a grimace of pain. Halfway down his chest is a black patch. This maybe shadow but appears more like a stain. Was this the entry point for his Spear of Destiny?

This image and Jehovah’s Witness- Los Angeles feature implied crosses, but the work also features multiple ‘real’ crosses. Christianity is the overriding faith in the book, but Frank shows that it is not the only faith.

Robert Frank – Covered Car – Long Beach, California (1955/56)

In Covered Car – Long Beach, California, the anonymous car has become the altar in the church of the automobile. As Day (2011, p. 62) points out,

‘The photograph depicts a car covered in a cloth. The cloth appears to be silk, perhaps a parachute or something similar. The richly adorned car stands between two palm trees, which create the impression of a portico. The car thus becomes an altar, complete with altar cloth.’

For the rest of the work, the automobile is a frequent feature. It is a constant facet of everyday life in The Americans. Its variety of appearance include as a simple mode of transport, at a funeral, as an intrusion, as a place to sit during a movie, and finally as a place of rest in the final image of the book. The presence of the car cannot be escaped and it is an inclusive faith. However, only one other image consecrates the automobile as overtly as Covered Car – Long Beach, California, and that is St. Francis, gas station, and city hall – Los Angeles.

Here, the statue, which Frank names as St. Francis,

‘…preaches directly across a deserted highway, into the sun. … St Francis is famous for his sermon to the birds. … Here he preaches to an audience of automobiles.’ (p. 88)

The cars appear, flock like, crammed between the two buildings waiting on every word. By being blessed or preached to by St. Francis, the image inescapably marks the cars as part of America’s religion.

Robert Frank – Bar – New York City (1955/56)

In Bar – New York City, the jukebox glows ethereally as if beckoning converts with a mystic light. Day (p. 143) describes it as ‘a modern-day Gabriel trumpeting in song the arrival of a new age’ and notes that the figures present in the bar seem to take little notice of its radiance. This jukebox wants to convert more to its cause even if, as in this image, few are listening.

However, in images such as Candy Store – New York City, the jukebox, like the car in Covered Car – Long Beach, California, becomes an altar. This time surrounded by young people who informally worship at it. Like the car, the jukebox is inclusive in its conversion of followers. This is illustrated effectively by Café – Beaufort, South Carolina. Here, a small African American baby is sprawled face first on the edge of a large cushion. The child is dwarfed by an enormous jukebox which seems to watch over the child in a protective, almost angelic fashion. Despite the child’s potential exclusion, on account of its ethnicity, from much of what 1950s America has to offer, the jukebox is there for him or her regardless of background.

Belief and its paraphernalia, conventional or otherwise, is a consistent theme of Frank’s America. It is one of the key theories that underpin The Americans as a critical description of 1950s America.

Racism

Whilst racism is frequently alluded to in the book, one images confronts it directly. That picture is both the book’s cover and arguable its most well-known. It is Trolley – New Orleans.

The message of segregation is clear in this picture of a racially divided America. The white passengers are in the front and the black passengers the back. They are separated by a divide. However, the image offers us more than a simple reading. As Sturken and Cartwright (2009, pp. 19-20) note,

‘It is as if the trolley itself represents the passage of history… The trolley riders seem to be held for one frozen, pivotal moment within the vehicle, a group of strangers thrown together to journey down the same road that would become so crucial to American history…’

This analysis can be taken further still. In the centre of the picture, we see two children, innocent of expression; it is they who are necessarily the central focus of the image. It is the minds of children that are to become the battleground. If the children cannot be persuaded of the folly of racism and segregation, then America’s future is a bleak one.

Racism is also seen in a wider but less overt context than segregation in the South in the image San Francisco.

Robert Frank - San Francisco (1955/56)

In this image, Frank surprises and photographs a black couple relaxing above an apparently wealthy white-washed suburb. However, they are separated from it excluded from the gleaming buildings and affluence. Professor Maurice Berger, writing in the New York Times notes that,

‘Rather than a neutral observer, Mr. Frank looms over them, an active, unseen participant — a surrogate for the intimidating whiteness that shadowed the lives of black Americans, no matter how liberal their environment.’ (2015)

It is clear from these two images as well as others in the book that the racism of mid-1950s America is an integral feature of Frank’s theory. Whilst is never again confronted so overtly as in Trolley – New Orleans, it is a constant theme.

The Connection to Grounded Theory

Grounded Theory did not exist as a research paradigm when Robert Frank was completing his work on The Americans. If it had existed, we can be confident that Frank would been neither aware nor interested in its potential as a photographic research tool as his great project was not an academic exercise. However, this does not obviate the realisation that he created a theory of America in his work. His theory is individual and subjective, but, nonetheless, it is a theory.

Since its creation Grounded Theory has consistently shown that it can be an effective method of generating theory in research. Additionally, it is axiomatic that qualitative research methods in general are subjective in nature. Therefore, if we accept that a body of photographic work can generate theory, and Frank’s work suggests the truth of this, it seems entirely appropriate to accept that Grounded Theory can be used a method of theory generation for a photographic research project.
