A COLLECTION OF MELUS! So Melu's my SelfMOC, one of them anyways. He's a Le-Matoran who becomes a Toa. A while back I decided to do designs of what Melu would look like in different Matoran and Toa Builds, and decided recently to update them.

I'm really happy with how all of these came out looking, especially the Hordika and Mistika builds for the Toa, and the Mahri and Shadow Matoran builds for the Matoran.

Here's the originals if you wanted to see them. I didn't have the AV-Matoran, Shadow Matoran, Phantoka, or Mistika builds with them tho. Some of them really only changed in terms of color. Originally I made them trying to stick to the OG Melu's color scheme and placement, but when I went back and updated them I decided to try and emulate the original color aesthetics of the builds they're based on.

I got into Bionicle in 2001. I had Toa Mata, Turaga, Rahi, mask packs--so can I really say I "missed out" on anything? I was afan from the beginning, right?

Wrong.

October or November 2001 (ornwhenever we tried--it might've been early 2002) was too late to get McToran at our small town's McDonalds. We didn't go to McDonalds hardly ever, and I don't remember EVER getting a Happy Meal. Certainly, I was bit old for them in 2001. Still, once the Bionicle bug hit, we talked Mom into taking us with an eye to getting a McToran.

And it was too late. Not by much: I think the display was still up, but they were out. I didn't get a McToran until the Bricklink era, when my my younger brother got me Jaller for Christmas. (I didn't get the Boxor.) That was during my slow slide into Dark Ages, but I kept him when I sold off 2/3rds of my Bionicles.

Since my return to the fandom, nothing has excited me more in a lot of parts or a Bricklink order than McToran parts. My six-pack is nothing special, but 2002-me would be thrilled.

Finally finished my newest resin cast test- a full Mctoran! Head ended up a disaster so I'm using vanilla for that. Since the rest of it was still a patchy mess, I decided to paint it to use as a Mckuta! I used the same ideas as for my infected Miru, but the bubble spaces made a neat effect when they caught paints, so i think it helps look more worn and ancient.

Hopefully I can get these guys more stable, might be neat to sell some custom Mctoran

I found Maku and Hewkii at a Brick Con earlier this year and knew I had to get both (along with a few mini Visorak).

I think theres definitely something to be said for how bright and vibrant the early years were

And how that got replaced with darker colors and more and more (and more) silver as the series went on and delved deeper into the GSR

And then mostly returned to the more vibrant palette on Bara Magna

Like, sure it matched the tone shift

But it also kinda matches how the GSR itself was kinda bad news

With the exception of 2006, Voya Nui being out on the surface of Aqua Magna's ocean alongside Mata Nui, (and there, the Piraka of all characters had lighter secondary colors under their metru-flavored primary armor) the darkest, most violent, most tragic stuff happened within the GSR. Mata Nui was such a paradise because it was relatively insulated from all that, and while conditions on Bara Magna weren't exactly great, there was a certain sense of stability to the situation there until the Skrall began overstepping.

Just some thoughts.

MASK MONDAY

Sike! Get pranked, no Masks here!

This is some old stuff from just before Yellow launched. Every piece here besides the torso is a resin replica!

Unfortunately, none of them are all that good. Surprisingly, the Mctoran feet pieces are more complex than I keep giving them credit for. My molds keep ending up with defects and they seem to be harder to fix than mask molds. The arms, of course, require a very specific material in order to get the correct hardness to maintain the disk throwing feature.

The brainstalk mold, however, came out near-perfect! I'll have to practice translucent colours with it and some other molds.

The torso is gonna be hell. Easily one if the most complex and intricate Lego pieces in existence. Wish me luck when I finally have the free time to attempt it again!

Articulated diminished matoran concept for @bionicle-redrawn The basic concept was finding a way to preserve the McToran aesthetic while trying to design something that still looks like it could move. Although I will admit that the final rendering on my comic page made the gang look like goofy astronaut toddlers. I think that's the right vibe, tho.

Hopefully, I'll be able to post the final submission I designed this for on time in August for Bionicle Day.
