Because an outline isn’t really writing. It’s construction, assemblage of elements in order. It’s structural. It’s finding the shape of the story. It’s not writing. Writing happens when you’re telling the story: it’s the human breath inside it, it’s finding the interactions and responses around planned events in the moment of living them in the story, it’s the act of discovering all the nuances and sounds of the story as you fully tell it. MOBY DICK is a straightforward outline but the outline doesn’t prepare you for the qualities of the story as it is told. You cannot predict every second of what the story will tell. And if you try to? You’re just transcribing a technical document. Insert previously machined “emotion button” here. I can show you the frame of a story in advance, but I can’t tell you what colour the wallpapers will be until I’ve started living in the place. You live it in the telling, and you can’t plan it all out in advance without ending up with a lifeless story. Warren Ellis, 2024 Orbital Operation

I believe the media can be the greatest force for peace on Earth, because it provides a forum for people to hear each other. And that’s the beginning of understanding. And understanding is the beginning of peace.

Engagement can lead to a variety of positive outcomes like social media engagement, listener-driven questions, attendance at your events and new relationships between your newsroom and the public, among others. Equipping, however, is about agency. It’s about providing access and opportunities for public participation and production. Equipping is about teaching and interconnected learning. It’s about exchanging skills and resource. It’s a redistribution of power between institutions and individuals.

Facebook to label "state-controlled media" and ban US ads before the elections 2020
Facebook to label "state-controlled media" and ban US ads before the elections 2020
Facebook has started to apply labels to state-owned media companies – news publishers that it sees as "wholly or partially under the editorial control of their government" – the company said in one blog entry Thursday.
"We believe that people should know if the news they are reading comes from a publication that may be government-influenced," the company said, "because it is under the…

From a standpoint of starting as a comics writer, working in other media... well, I've come to think of it like this. The first stage is an exercise in withholding information. In comics scripts, we need to find the picture for the artist --  even if the picture is demonstrably stupid and wrong, we need to find it first, so the artist isn't left thrashing around trying to work out what we want or need, which is a waste of their valuable time and energy. So there's some particular specificity in describing the visuals, written in a pretty informal way. In screenwriting, that's called "directing on the page." In prose, it freezes the image so it can't take flight in the reader's mind. So there's a certain stepping-down of the informational load in order to take advantage of the effects that other media afford. That's the craft-based example I use when I'm asked about this, just to illustrate that every artform operates in a different way, and effects don't always translate between them.

Not a single person noticed that I had stopped using social media. (Not enough to tell me anyway.) Perhaps if it had been two weeks? For me, this reinforced that social media is actually not a good way to “stay connected with friends”. Social media aggregates interactions between loved ones so that you get industrialized communication rather than personal connection. No one really notices if a particular person goes missing because they’re just one interchangeable node in a network.

What I can talk about is art, and how a museum can make people care about it. If historical art is now a hard sell, and it is, learn to sell it hard. That means, among other things, start telling the truth about it: about who made objects, and how they work in the world, and how they got to the museum, and what they mean, what values they advertise, good and bad. Go for truth (which, like the telling of history, is always changing), and connect art to life. Mix things up: periods, functions, cultures. (You can always unmix them.) Let audiences see that old is always new, if viewed through knowledge. To present art this way — to pitch it, advocate it, make it snap to life — is to rethink the basic dynamic of a museum, turn it from passive to active, from archival to interactive, while letting it be all of these.
Holland Cotter, 2017
How to Fix the Met: Connect Art to Life
(Cotter talks about art and a museum, but what he says should be done could be useful for any news media.)
