Character Design analysis: Mei Yuzuki

I wanted to talk about Mei. she's my favorite character in Slow Damage for personal reasons. Mei is one of the characters whose design I found incredibly beautiful. There is not so much to talk about or go on because of the limited information about her.There is one thing about her design that is supposed to convey her role and character in the game which I am going to talk about below.

In the art book, Yamada stated that Mei is designed to match Towa as a pair.

I was confused by this. I thought it could mean that she would have the same matching clothes as Towa, but it means that Mei’s character design is made to match Towa.  Mei has small similarities to Towa in her design,  with both having the same hair color, expressions, and clothes. If we put them next to each other they look and have the same resemblance as brother and sister. Mei’s design is meant to be misleading to have us believe that she is Towa's sister, just like Towa did.

Mei and Towa are designed to be a matching set as seen in how their clothes are made to match noting their time at euphoria as a matching set, There clothes are in the way they are dressed up makes them seem more like dolls to be played with or shown off than regular children they are dressed like that to serve customers in euphoria.  

Speaking of the matching sets, there are a few details about Mei's design that are visually seen in her appearance in the concept art she placed right next to Fujieda.

In the design process, Fujieda is Mei’s main model for her appearance, since she is Fujiedas sister. They both have similar features since they are brother and sister, such as Mei having the same colors as Fujieda.

She is younger than Fujieda and resembles the gender-bent version of her brother but with softer features, Mei and Fujieda have different expressions and eyes, as seen in how Mei lacks her brother’s harshness in her eyes.

In the first concept art she has the same untidy hair as Fujieda, the messy hair in her design resembles Fujieda since it's supposed to note that they are related to each other. The long hair in his first concept is used for her current design.

The third concept art had her with straight short hair, straight hair resembling Mei’s straight hair she had in her current design. 

Mei's current design resembles 1 and 3 with long hair and short straight hair with bangs.

The straight bangs and hair give the impression of her personality that she is childlike and innocent and her bangs show her eyes are created putting a strong emphasis on the strong light in her eyes that she had. 

The thing that is most present in her concept drafts and her design is the light that's visible in her eyes which is prevalent in her personality.  Mei has a powerful light in her eyes that is something Towa noted which is something that is seen in her design. The light in Mei’s eyes in her concept art this aspect in her design notes what she represents her character and role in the game.

The third concept art had Mei in a white dress. The white dress in the 3 and straight bangs make Mei look too young. The artist was careful with Mei to not make her look too much like a princess, and her clothes needed to say something about her personality too and background. 

Concept art 1 and 2 have her wear ordinary clothes, her clothes are supposed to note that Mei comes from an ordinary if not abusive background. the clothes in her first design look like the ones she had in the photo.

In the art book Mei went through numerous changes in her concept art she went through changes before it settled on the current design. Her hair and clothes went through revamps before they settled on the current. If there was anything Mei’s design taught me it is that another aspect of character design is the lasting impression you make on the audience from the design of the character. It's about how the design left a lasting impression on someone. Her concept art had her with short hair the short hair did not have an impact on Mei’s design Mei's design wouldn’t make her any less memorable if she has short hair which is why the long hair gives Mei more of an impact in contrast to short hair.

Mei being modeled after both Fujieda, her brother, and Towa are meant to resemble them both. Fujieda is designed to mirror Towa, and mei appearance is designed to match Towa corresponding to the theme of the route equals.

One thing in the concept art is that she wears white in her clothes; this would play an important role in her character and story. In Towa's flashback, it features Mei wearing a flowy white dress which symbolizes her purity, and innocence and represents her light, the white dress gives her an ethereal feel which represents how she is no longer part of this world.

Mei wearing white notes her the foil of Maya, and her white flowy dress contrasts with Maya's red-black kimono this contrast showed that Mei is the foil of Maya, being the light to Maya's darkness as seen in her design and writing.

There are a lot of little details that go into her design but the thing that stands out the most in her design is how she symbolizes the light.

Mei is designed after the theme of the route and the light motif she represents Mei designed to match Towa Fujieda points out how she is put under the same situation as Towa in his time as Euphoria and the light motif in her design corresponds to her personality to how she never gave up hope despite the hell she was thrown into an inspired Towa to escape from his mother.

The light symbolism notes her role in the plot of what she is supposed to mean to Towa and Fujieda and how she completes their character arc by helping them find closure in their past and giving them hope to look forward to the future.

Stardom 2024 predictions a la "3 Count"

If you guys haven't seen the WrestleTalk series "3 Count" I highly recommend it. Basically, it's predicting something, or looking back on something, and describing it in three words or less. Slow Damage name analysis: Mei Yuzuki

Mei is one of my favorite characters in slow damage and I want to do a post about her I am not an expert on the Japanese language so I might mess up the context of her kanji while explaining it in this post, if I messed up with anything feel free to edit or put your input if you feel that I screwed up explained it

Me (愛)

“me,愛” means "love.”

Mei when translated into English, is read as Ai, the kanji used for Mei’s name is the kanji for ai.

The kanji in Mei's name brings a more subtle nuance that goes well with her character when examined closely to go with her character.

Before I elaborate on Mei’s name there is something I will go over about the kanji in her name first before I analyze her name. In Japanese culture there are many ways to spell love there are a few ways to spell love there are two kanji that are translated to Love but with different connotations. It's important to look at the context of how these kanji are used in Japanese culture.

Koi(恋) koi is a character associated with romantic love or passionate love. It's described as exciting, like something spontaneous and intense. It is more akin to an obsession. It is connected to wanting and always wanting and can be selfish.

Ai(愛) ai is a character associated with unconditional or unending affection it's rarely used in Japanese due to how strong the usage is. Ai is a deep love a feeling that developed over time. ai is described as giving than taking it is more selfless when compare to koi. Ai is associated with kindness; it's described as a more unconditional love.

The context of ai described Mei’s personality perfectly in a cultural subtext

Mei is a gentle kind girl who gives Towa affection, friendship, and genuine kindness in euphoria that he is deprived of. Mei is a comforting presence to Towa in his darkest moments and makes him feel less alone.

Mei never held anything against Towa being related to her tormentor seeing him as an abused boy who didn’t deserve the treatment, Towa was someone mei died trying to save

Mei embodies the more self-sacrificial form of love in Japanese highlighting the connotations of ai. The selfless qualities seen in Mei referenced the kanji for ai.

Mei’s sacrificial love enables Towa to break free from his mother's influence and gives both Fujieda and Towa the closure they need to heal from the past.

I (衣)

“I,衣” means "clothing, garment”.

The I in her name is a common name particle for girls in Japan, and the clothes aspect can infer from the white flowy dress she wore during her time in Euphoria.

Clothes are garments something you wear on your body inferring the kanji in her name love and clothes referencing how her kindness, gentleness, and affection is part personality , something she wears like clothing coming naturally to her. The stuffed rabbit is an example of her love and innocence, something that she carried with her even at Euphoria.

This is also the same that Towa brings with him as well seen in the way he is attached to the bunny a moment of the love and support she gave him.

Yuzuki (柚木)

“Yuzu” means “柚, citrus” and “ki” means “木, tree” When put together it's spelled “citrus tree”.

Mei shares their last name with her brother, and the Japanese culture of citrus matches Mei as a character.

The pure white flowers on the citrus reference mei she is accompanied by the color white she is seen as a white outline in Towa’s dreams the white flower notes her as the light and her innocence as seen in how mei served as a light to Towa and Fujieda. the symbolism of a pure person notes that Mei is a kind innocent girl.

the sour taste of citrus is a reference to Fujieda and Meis life how they were abused by their parents later with mei being sold by her mother which later led to her death ironically Mei never harbored any bitterness from these events seen in the way she treated Towa never harbored resentment towards him. The part to ward off evil and repel colds infers how Mei, her brother, interfered with Sakaki and Maya's plans for Towa derailing the second coming of Maya. The symbolism happiness symbolizes the hope he gave Towa to break free from his mother and how the confirmation of her fate gave both Fujieda and Towa closure with their past
