We love our pets. They are valued members of our household, and in some cases, we enjoy their company more than we do that of other humans. We speak to them as if they understand our language, although they are very challenged when it comes to communicating back. And we will do almost anything for them.
In addition to the 334 million Americans residing here, there are 89.7 million dogs and 58.3 million cats. That’s a lot of extra mouths to feed, but we do it because we crave their companionship, and without their faithful humans, they would suffer. All told, USAmericans spend $136.8 billion each year on their pets.
That’s a huge market, and while big-box chains like Pet Smart and Petco long ago realized this, I am surprised that mass marketers had not stepped up to the plate to claim a bigger piece of the action.Sure, all the big ones, like Target, Meijer, Walmart, and others, have extensive pet supplies sections in their stores.
But there is still money on the table, and that is pet services. These run the gamut from nail clippings to grooming and vaccinations, the kinds of things that typically require a visit to a veterinarian.
Walmart, though, has sniffed out a potentially lucrative strategy to break into that sector by opening its first pet center, with plans to open many more if it does well.
Tumblr media
I am betting that, in addition to realizing this market is simply too good to ignore, that Walmart is also very much aware that change is afoot in the veterinary services field as well. Turns out that between 2017 and 2022, $45 billion in private equity deals were made to scoop up local vets and their clinics. That’s another way of saying that, while your local vet may look and smell like a home-town operation, they may very well be part of a much larger entity.
That’s your cue, Walmart, because if vet clinics are attracting that kind of PE money, there must be a lot more gold to mine. And, Walmart offers something that all the others do not: convenience. Stir in competitive pricing, and you have a 1-2 punch that will find shoppers bringing Fido to the store, and picking their groceries while he gets his nails trimmed and shots updated. It’s also not a whole lot different from dropping off your car for a tire rotation or oil change at Walmart while you do your shopping.
I have to smile, too, because this is something that is so NOT digital, at a time when it seems everything is going that way. It requires you to show up in person, along with your pet. You know. Be in the moment, and interact with other humans. And their pets. You might be able to book appointments and so forth electronically, but you can’t get a rabies shot online or through an app.
But there is a digital side to all of this, and that’s the new subscription service Walmart is rolling out for regular consumables for your pets. Heck, if Amazon will deliver my vitamins each month, there’s no reason Walmart can’t deliver a 46-pound bag of dog food on a similar schedule. Let them do the heavy lifting.
The new pet center will have its own dedicated entrance, which is a wise move, since I’m sure Walmart doesn’t want people and their pets entering the store along with everyone else. It will be staffed by employees of a separate firm, although it will all be branded as Walmart. This also makes sense, because Walmart does not have the types of employees needed to deliver such services. But it sure has the right venue for selling them.
The planned price list for services will also put Walmart in a good place. Vet clinics have had little or no competition in the past, but Walmart is about to shake the fruit off of that tree. With inflationary pressures finding more people, including pet owners, trading down or delaying spending money, this is a strategy that is consistent with Walmart’s overall mission to provide value.
Amid all of the effort to push forward into the future, to incorporate ever more automation, it is refreshing to see that there is still opportunity to make money the old fashioned way. I’m thinking my dog Huck would like this, and if and when we get this service in Canyon, we’ll be there.

❦ 𝔾𝕣𝕖𝕖𝕥𝕚𝕟𝕘𝕤, 𝔻𝕖𝕒𝕣𝕖𝕤𝕥 𝕋𝕣𝕒𝕧𝕖𝕝𝕖𝕣𝕤! ❦
Hello and happy New Years everyone! I apologize for my inactivity and my lack of writing as of late but I can assure you I do have a reason. I have been very busy with school, many of you know that university is very difficult and can be very time consuming for us students- especially with some of us trying to go for an all A streak.
I am currently enrolled in two winter fast pace cram classes for English and while I do have some freedom, I do unfortunately have to heal currently. I recently came down with what seemed to be a cold before I left for my Christmas holiday in Michigan, of course it only got worse as the holiday progressed and almost seemed as if it was a pesky sinus infection which I got medicine for at a local Meijers but turns out I was only adding fuel to the fire. Long story short, I have laryngitis- which is common but is incredibly painful and irritating to say the least.
I am taking the CORRECT medicine for this now so that’s a good thing, but, yes there is a but (there’s always one), I am having to monitor my lungs and my breathing because the coughing I am dealing with is so painful that I have found it hard to breathe sometimes.
Mum, remind me why you got rid of my nebulizer again…?
As someone with previous respiratory infections and issues like pneumonia/bronchitis induced asthma, this is definitely a must watch for me. Other than that I’m definitely doing well mentally, and am rather enjoying my “quarantine” of sorts and my pyjama days where I can work peacefully on homework, some art projects, and read the books I got for Christmas!
I will get to writing soon! (Hopefully!)

       SMART BOMB
The completely unnecessary news analysis
by Christopher Smart
August 9, 2020
DRINKING REVERSE KOOL-AID
Well, this is embarrassing, two of our Republican congressmen, Chris Stewart and John Curtis, are praising Dragon Queen Nancy Pelosi, otherwise know as the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. Here's the thing, no matter what district Republican candidates live in, they all run against Pelosi. GOP strategists have spent 20 years vilifying her until her name is shorthand for left-leaning stuff like taxing the rich and pushing for universal healthcare — how unAmerican can you get. And the fact is she's not a man and can't be trusted and is always outflanking her male Republican colleagues — what a bitch. So it's pretty crazy that Stewart and Curtis are praising the Dragon Queen's recent trip to Taiwan. “I thought it was actually a very important event and a very important time,” said Stewart. It has irked the People's Republic of China (PRC) to the point where Dear Leader Xi Jinping reportedly has developed a severe case of diaper rash — the cure for which is firing lots of missiles over the island nation of Taiwan. Still, given the gnarly mood of the GOP and their Trumpist base, Stewart and Curtis' praise for Pelosi could risk a serious flogging by the MAGA mob, if not the gallows built for Mike Pence. Someone must have slipped them Reverse Kool-Aid. How else can you possibly explain it.
SHOOTING THE MOON
In the card game Hearts one winning strategy is called, “Shooting the Moon.” The Democratic Party's ploy for the November mid-term elections could be called, shooting yourself in the head. Ordinarily in Hearts a player avoids taking any hearts and the queen of spades. To Shoot the Moon, however, a player must take all the hearts and the queen of spades — losing so bad you win. The Dems scheme is to give big bucks to hard-right candidates in Republican primaries because — we shit you not — they would be easier for Dems to beat in November. Gambling that GOP election-deniers would lose in the fall isn't exactly a strong bet in the age of Trump. Russian Roulette, anyone? Beyond that, it's pretty damn cynical to champion democracy after underwriting fascism. Case in point, moderate GOP Rep. Peter Meijer, who voted to impeach Trump, was narrowly defeated by election-denier John Gibbs. The Dems spent $435,000 on ads to get Gibbs on the November ballot. That sucks said maverick Republican Adam Kinzinger. “[D]on't keep coming to me asking where are all the good Republicans that defend democracy and then... spend half-a-million dollars promoting one of the worst election-deniers out there.” Shooting the Moon in Hearts is risky, but not even Evil Knievel would try it in politics.
PERSON, WOMAN, MAN, CAMERA, TV
Utah statesman and former motivational speaker Burgess Owens and 50 of his bigheaded Republican colleagues in Congress are demanding that President Joe Biden submit to a cognitive test immediately because he's losing it and wants to pass legislation to help middle-class Americans. That's pretty rich coming from Owens who embraces QAnon and believes Donald Trump is a stable genius. Owens added his signature to a letter authored by Trump toady and former White House physician Ronny Jackson, known as “the Candyman.” The letter tells Biden: “[Y]our moon-walk would make Michael Jackson spit up and your rendition of “Billy Jean” is an impeachable offense, you even forgot some of the lyrics...” Remember Trump bragging that he passed his test with flying colors, repeating: “Person. Woman. Man. Camera. TV” — a sure sign he was ready to deal with the pandemic, Vladimir Putin and climate change. “And they say 'that's amazing. How did you do that?'” Trump told a Fox reporter. "I do it because I'm cognitively there." Indeed, just like Owens who wrote a book titled, “Liberalism or How to Turn Good Men into Whiners, Weenies and Wimps.” Owens says he will never be a wimp and will follow Trump off any cliff anytime, anywhere. Cognitively there? No doubt about it.
Post script — That's a wrap for another stellar week here at Smart Bomb were we keep track of Alex Jones and all those other hate mongers so you don't have to. You're right, Wilson, Alex Jones should choke on the $49 million a Texas jury awarded the parents of six-year-old Jesse Lewis. He was one of the 20 small children and six adults murdered in 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary by a deranged gunman with an assault rifle. Since 2014, over and over again, Jones insisted on his InfoWars radio show and website the that Sandy Hook slaughter was a hoax and all the dead kids were really actors. “I’ve looked at it and undoubtedly there’s a cover-up,” Jones had said, “There’s actors, they’re manipulating, they’ve been caught lying, and they were pre-planning before it and rolled out with it.” In response, some of his followers shot up the house and car of the youngster's parents, Scarlett Lewis and Neil Heslin. Jones has made millions on hate speech and conspiracy theories, according to courtroom testimony. “Take him out,” attorney Wesley Ball told the jury. "We know that everything the man said on the [witness] stand is a lie. When he breathes he lies." And then there's Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, Bill O'Reily, Glenn Beck, and on and on. Free speech? Really. Sonsofbitches.
Well Wilson, talk about ending on a sour note — but what's a mother to do? You're right, without BAD we wouldn't have GOOD. Let's just keep telling ourselves that. And if it's worth doin', it's worth over doin' — so get the guys in the band and take us to the dark side:
I see a red door and I want it painted black No colours anymore, I want them to turn black I see the girls walk by, dressed in their summer clothes I have to turn my head until my darkness goes I see a line of cars and they're all painted black With flowers and my love both never to come back I see people turn their heads and quickly look away Like a newborn baby, it just happens every day I look inside myself and see my heart is black I see my red door, I must have it painted black Maybe then I'll fade away and not have to face the facts It's not easy facing up when your whole world is black I see a red door and I want it painted black No colours anymore, I want them to turn black I see the girls walk by, dressed in their summer clothes I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
I wanna see it painted, painted black Black as night, black as coal I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky I wanna see it painted, painted, painted, painted black

Save on Groceries - What are your tips?
Things I wish I knew sooner – Financial - Grocery Shopping 1) Have a list of what you want to buy, stick with it 2) Know that all grocery stores of cheaper items, run sales and run cycles 3) Go to the stores that will save you time/money a. Aldi’s is cheaper on fruits, veggies, bread and meats, milk, eggs, frozen items, etc. i. Bring a quarter and bags. The quarter is used for the cart which you get back when you return. Bring bags and cold bag(s) so that you can take the groceries home easier. b. Target has a few items that you will find cheaper than in other stores, if you have the target card, you will get 5% off and they have their own app for savings/coupons. You can get a name brand cheaper than some stores. c. Read the ads for all other stores as Krogers, Giant Eagle, Meijers, Fresh Thyme, and others run good deals. Get what you need and move on. d. Bring the coupons e. After a while, you will find the patterns and follow to make it easier 4) Use apps to earn gift cards or cashback. The following are the ones I have tried a. Fetch - By far the easiest. Scan your groceries and earn points. Buy the branded (if it is on your list) and earn more points i. Referral link: https://fetchrewards.onelink.me/vvv3/referralemail… ii. My referral Code: YY8RT. With this code, you get 2,000 points ($2.00 according to the site) and I get 2,000. This does help me.
b. Ibotta – based out of Colorado, this is a big one. Before you shop, check out what they offer online. Link your Amazon rewards card. If you link your loyalty program no need to capture the receipt, that is done for you. This one always has at least ten cents on a receipt so you are always getting something. You can get money back or order gift cards from what you use. This is a must-have like Fletch. c. Referral link: https://ibotta.com/r/tnijxgf This will help you and I. You can use code TNIJXGF instead of the link
5) Receipt Pal: This is another and slower take a picture and get points. They do it a little different. Rewards are sweepstake chances and gift cards. This one is more limited in rewards but more open about receipts. 4 Receipts = 100 points. They will also ask to connect to Amazon and add your email. a. Here is a link to join: https://app.adjust.com/oqlq9t9?label=7XTZ6GQG b. There may be a reward at the time for both of us.
6) Receipt Hog – This is a more whimsical receipt app. Receipts can be just about anything current. They add slots, surveys and other interactions to engage the user. Take pictures, get rewards.
7) Coinout: Well this is another scan any receipt, lot of ads. I have not used it long. It seems slow. I’m not recommending this one right now

Level 1: Winter Meets Summer
Phew, how are we all doing? A lot has happened! I just finished my first week of school at UNSW and every single day I have been in awe of this place, feeling “Wow, I can’t believe I am in Sydney!” This feeling combined with so much that Sydney has to offer has pushed my daily walking distance to over 12 km.
Tumblr media
The Modern Architecture UNSW Campus (too many staircases everywhere)
The first week kicked off with my class, ELEC1111 (equivalent to EECS 314 but a 5-week cramped version of it), even before the orientation! At orientation, we were introduced to Australian history and indigenous culture, hyped up about the adventures like surfing, scuba diving and hiking that we can do here, and shown informational videos about local laws, health system, and emergency contacts which will help us here. However, my favorite part was when they asked for 5 volunteers to try out the aboriginal dance on stage, and I obviously RAN to the stage to seize the opportunity! I danced my heart out in front of about 1000 people for something that I only learned a few minutes ago. It was the perfect adrenaline rush!!
The UNSW student life club, ARC, had also planned fun events for the week like a BBQ after orientation at Roundhouse (a social bar...on campus!) where I met a lot of other Michigan students. And another BBQ by Coogee Beach so students can make new friends and integrate into the Australian culture. Most students on campus right now are on exchange/study abroad for summer term and the locals return to campus in first week of February which is when the UNSW trimester starts.
Honestly, enjoying some waves and bathing in the sun when it is 27 degrees Celsius (80 degrees F) thinking about the freezing Michigan weather makes it even more amazing LOL.
Tumblr media
Beating the heat with a $1 Coca-Cola Slurpee..
Tumblr media
Sunset at the Coogee Beach
Tumblr media
Fancy some spike-ball, eh?
Other than meeting interesting people from all around the world, the rest of my week was packed with the logistical part of study abroad. I got my Opal card (transportation card for buses, rails and trams) with a $20 top-up from a convenience store, bought an Australian phone number with a prepaid plan from Optus network because they had a $10 deal for first 28 days (always look out for deals), got some sustenance groceries for the week from Woolsworth and Coles (think of Kroger and Meijer but in the down-under), and toured off-campus accommodation places before signing a lease for a share house.
But, no mention of partying yet? Hmmm, I must say, Sydney nightlife is always rocking - with parties all 7 days a week at different places. On Wednesday, we went to Side Bar, which is Sydney’s biggest student and backpacker bar. It had a silent disco night, free for students! I would highly recommend this even if you are not much of a dancer because they have a fantastic selection of songs ranging from 90s singalongs & 2000s jams to the more trendy hip-hop and electronic music. So, put on your headphones, sing loudly and shamelessly and tap your feet to some of your favorite songs. On Saturday, we attended the International Student Festival Sydney at Cruise Bar, a premier bar at the harbor with spectacular views of the Opera House. It was a super fancy party and I am guessing it is not the ideal spot for students because it was very a expensive place and most only gathered for the festival to meet other internationals.
Tumblr media
Let loose at the Silent Disco - Side Bar
Tumblr media
Dress up, be fancy, and head to Cruise Bar to meet international students
Even though Sydney has been an exciting time so far, it is also important to take note of the New South Wales bushfires that have been a global concern. We were informed at orientation that our campus vicinity is in the safe zone, about 80 km away from the bushfires. So far, we have only experienced one smoky day on campus with bad air quality post a thunderstorm but rest has been alright. I encourage you all to spread awareness about the bushfire emergency and contribute to the relief campaign in whatever way you can.
Thanks for catching up and congratulations on completing level 1 of the adventure with me!

14. Cyprus
Eleni Foureira - “Fuego” Runner-up
youtube
What is happiness? The feeling that power is growing and that resistance is overcome. --Friedrich Nietzsche
Judging by that quote, Eleni must be a very happy woman because she has overcome a LOT. She entered Eurovision with a slew of drawbacks: As a sexually confident woman with a sultry song, she was always going to inspire contempt. As a fugitive Albanian, the Greek support other Cypriot entries had would be only conditional for Eleni at best. Her voice (or apparent lack thereof), of course, was a major point of discussion, among Greeks and Eurovision Tumblr Bloggers alike (ahem). As someone who was hyped and pimped by her Loud Obnoxious Fanbase as someone better than she actually was, she was always going to alienate neutrals by proxy.
So going into this year, Eleni faced a fairly uphill battle. Guess what?
She fucking slayed it.
Tumblr media
From the moment this woman, no, this GAZELLE, serenly glided onto the stage, unfazed, confident and battle-ready, she was snatching weaves left, right and centre. Any man would pay the price of sweet surrender, for the promise in her eyes it was so tender. She provided a action-pumped show that was captivating, mesmerizing even, for a full three minutes. My God, did “Fuego” look good.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Out of all the acts that could’ve won the Sasha Jean-Baptiste Raffle, I’m glad “Fuego” did because Eleni absolutely was the one whom I felt needed it the most. Partially because Eleni is an utter gem of a person. She’s the epitome of the Lovable Dimwit Archetype (”Eleni what does your song mean?” “it means... yeah yeah, fire ^__^”) Mostly because Eleni had two pretty big problems: She has a fairly crappy voice and she has a fairly crappy song.
The voice I don’t mind though. Yeah, it’s not as crisp as the rest of the top five (literally crisp if we count Moro’s, whose voice sounds like someone crushing doritos with their bare hands), but Eleni’s vocals being shit was telegraphed way in advance so idek how you could be shocked at this fucking stage. For all the buzz it generated, I expected way worse? Eleni’s vocals don’t detract from the experience and at times even enhance it. Her voice just... withers at the funniest of moments:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then the disaster note gets echoed around the Altice Arena TWICE <3 (also “Yeah Eyes of a Linus <3)
The song, however, I mind significantly more. Surely Cyprus made the most out of what they were given and “Fuego” was an excellent frame for that brilliant act, but Dear God. I’ve said it several times before, but “Fuego” would make an excellent winner in two-thousand-and-EIGHT, but not two-thousand-and-fucking-EIGHTEEN. Even by Eurovision’s hopelessly antiquated Musical standards (”Hey guys we found out about this CRAZE that’s sweeping the musical scene we should add it to all our entries” “what’s it called?” “Dubstep” -- Eurovision in 2013), “Fuego” is hopelessly dated. It’s a nice throwback to the halcyon days of the Eastern Miniskirted Goddess (and “Fuego” is better than, say, “Secret Combination” and “Düm Tek Tek”), but this is not even remotely near “My Number One”, “Qele Qele” or “Shady Lady” levels of glorious hip-shaking femdom imo.
Tumblr media
“Fuego”’s utter lack of originality also came to the attention of the Eurosnobs who began disliking Eleni for... the fucking wrongest, stupidest reasons why am I not surprised? “UM SHE’S LIKE BEYONCE HOW AWFUL” First of all, Beyoncé doesn’t fucking have a monopoly on this type of music, Second of all, you’re making it sound as if being like Queen Bay is a bad thing??? Third of all,  STFUUUU!!! WHY EVEN WATCH EUROVISION IF YOU’RE NOT WILLING TO BASK IN THE GLORY OF THIS DESPERATE SLUTPOP ANTHEM
Tumblr media
At the end of the gay, I really like “Fuego”. Well, that is to say, I like what it became on the Eurovision stage, but that’s ultimately what matters most. Despite the hate she got, Eleni absolutely deserved to finish as high as she did based on her live performances. On the flipside, if I were to never listen to “Fuego” again, I wouldn’t miss it, at all. Now that we’re ready to fully move on to the next tier, I do have *higher* “spam replay button on Youtube” standards that “Fuego” sadly, does not meet. STILL A BETTER UNDERDOG STORY THAN NETTA THO

FOOTNOTES
1) I would argue that Eleni probably had the best underdog story out of everyone this year. This year had plenty of them, many of which are still in this ranking (Ieva, Eugent, DoReDoS, etc), but there really is something to be said about the constant barrage of persecution, xenophobia and mockery Eleni had to deal with and overcome in both LIFE and this contest. Pity she wasn’t a chicken woman or it would’ve won her the contest.
2) In case anyone wonders, I was pretty much “France or Estonia or DIE” for pretty much the entire season, so as you can imagine, I wasn’t too impressed with the top five we got (um, yeah not like I didn’t already boot 4/5 of them lul) Out of the DIRE top five we were given, Eleni probably should have won? (I loved Germany -obviousspoiler- but moreso because they didn’t win) Ugh I can’t with this year sometimes.

I must ask where can i get good quality but cheap books im sorry if this sounded weird
//It's no problem. I'll try to answer to the best of my ability. Sorry for this being a long post.
1. Barnes and Noble
This is probably where I get a good majority of my books. Not everything here is cheap, but some good deals can be found here. If you are willing to pay for a membership here you'd be able to get some additional savings. But it is annoying to go in without said card.
A bonus is most locations have a little cafe in them. The last time I've been there they had a book available for $5.
2. Amazon
Probably my second go-to place if I'm looking to buy books. It does seem that between here and Barnes and Noble you'd be able to get the books from here a little bit cheaper. It just depends on the book.
Unlike with Barnes and Noble, I do think this is better if you already know what you want to buy. Not the best option if you just want to browse.
3. Walmart, Target, Meijer, or any of those big box stores.
There is not much I can say about these places. They do have book sections. One with better sections than others. From worse to best I'd rank them Walmart, Meijer, Target.
Even if the selection isn't big it isn't impossible to find something good with at least Meijer or Target. With Walmart less so.
4. Library Sale
There are some libraries that well sometimes sell some books. There is one I live nearby that actually holds a sale once or twice a month. They have it to where you pay $10 and they give you a tote in which you can fill with books.
With this, I only would recommend if you don't mind used books. Or in some cares don't mind cramped spaces. Selection isn't always the best but I usually do find something good.
5. Little Library.
I don't know about the area you live in but where I live there are quite a few little libraries popping up. With these people can donate books they no longer want and if they find something they'd like can take a book.
I have once donated to a little library but never have I taken a book. Trying to a book from these is probably a gamble. But it might be possible to get a good book from one. [The one I donated myself was because I actually bought two copies.]
This also if you don't mind a used book.
6. Thrift Stores.
You might be able to find a good book at a thrift store. If you have the patience to look through what they have. Also, if you don't mind a used book.
7. Book Clubs / Book Subscriptions.
There are online book clubs in which you can get a book each month. I don't know how many types there are. But I belong to one called Book of the Month Club. With Book of the Month, you are able to pick between 5 different books. Then if you'd like you can add two additional books to your box for $10 for each book.
The base price for Book of the Month is roughly $16 not including any add ons.
Here is my referral link.

8. Etsy, surprise.
Some people on Etsy sell surprise books. Depending on the seller you'd be able to pick the genre. Some sellers include extras. Though this one is also a gamble with what you get. Also most likely to get a used book. Tried this once myself.

Trump Impeached for Inciting Insurrection
Tumblr media
WASHINGTON — Donald J. Trump on Wednesday became the first American president to be impeached twice, as 10 members of his party joined with Democrats in the House to charge him with “incitement of insurrection” for his role in egging on a violent mob that stormed the Capitol last week.
Reconvening in a building now heavily militarized against threats from pro-Trump activists and adorned with bunting for the inauguration of President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr., lawmakers voted 232 to 197 to approve a single impeachment article. It accused Mr. Trump of “inciting violence against the government of the United States” in his quest to overturn the election results, and called for him to be removed and disqualified from ever holding public office again.
The vote left another indelible stain on Mr. Trump’s presidency just a week before he is slated to leave office and laid bare the cracks running through the Republican Party. More members of his party voted to charge the president than in any other impeachment.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California, declaring the past week one of the darkest chapters in American history, implored colleagues to embrace “a constitutional remedy that will ensure that the republic will be safe from this man who is so resolutely determined to tear down the things that we hold dear and that hold us together.”
A little more than a year after she led a painstaking, three-month process to impeach Mr. Trump the first time for a pressure campaign on Ukraine to incriminate Mr. Biden — a case rejected by the president’s unfailingly loyal Republican supporters — Ms. Pelosi had moved this time with little fanfare to do the same job in only seven days.
“He must go. He is a clear and present danger to the nation that we all love,” the speaker said, adding later, “It gives me no pleasure to say this — it breaks my heart.”
The top House Republican, Representative Kevin McCarthy of California, conceded in a pained speech on the floor that Mr. Trump had been to blame for the assault at the Capitol. It had forced the vice president and lawmakers who had gathered to formalize Mr. Biden’s victory to flee for their lives in a deadly rampage.
“The president bears responsibility for Wednesday’s attack on Congress by mob rioters,” said Mr. McCarthy, one of the 138 Republicans who returned to the House floor after the mayhem and voted to reject certified electoral votes for Mr. Biden. “He should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding.”
Outside the House chamber, a surreal tableau offered reminders of the rampage that gave rise to the impeachment, as thousands of armed members of the National Guard in camouflage fatigues surrounded the complex and snaked through its halls, stacking their helmets, backpacks and weapons wherever they went. Their presence gave the proceedings a wartime feel, and evoked images of the 1860s, when the Union Army had quartered in the building.
The House’s action set the stage for the second Senate trial of the president in a year. The precise timing of that proceeding remained in doubt, though, as senators appeared unlikely to convene to sit in judgment before Jan. 20, when Mr. Biden will take the oath of office and Mr. Trump will become a former president.
The last proceeding was a partisan affair. But this time, Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader, was said to support the effort as a means of purging his party of Mr. Trump, setting up a political and constitutional showdown that could shape the course of American politics.
If a Senate trial resulted in Mr. Trump’s conviction, it held out the prospect, tantalizing for Democrats and many Republicans alike, of barring Mr. Trump from holding office again in the future.
In a measured statement after the vote, Mr. Biden called for the nation to come together after an “unprecedented assault on our democracy.” He was staring down the likelihood that the trial would complicate his first days in office, and said he hoped Senate leadership would “find a way to deal with their constitutional responsibilities on impeachment while also working on the other urgent business of this nation.” That work included cabinet nominations and confronting the coronavirus crisis.
In the House, Democrats and Republicans who supported his ouster made no attempt to hide their fury at Mr. Trump, who was said to have enjoyed watching the attack play out on television as lawmakers pleaded for help. Republicans harangued members of their own party for supporting his mendacious campaign to cling to claim election victory.
Returning to the same chamber where many of them donned gas masks and hid under chairs amid gunfire one week ago, as rioters carrying zip ties and chanting “hang Pence” and “where’s Nancy” overtook the police, lawmakers issued stinging indictments of the president and his party.
“They may have been hunting for Pence and Pelosi to stage their coup,” said Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland, the lead impeachment prosecutor, “but every one of us in this room right now could have died.”
At least five people did die during the attack, including an officer and a member of the mob who was shot just outside the chamber door.
Lawmakers, on edge about the state of the country, said the threat from Mr. Trump had not subsided.
“He is capable of starting a civil war,” Representative Maxine Waters of California, a veteran liberal, said.

After four years of nearly unquestioning alliance with him, few Republicans defended Mr. Trump’s actions outright. Those who did resorted to a familiar set of false equivalencies, pointing to racial justice protests last summer that turned violent, and accusations that Democrats had mistreated the president and were trying to stifle the 74 million Americans who voted for him.
“It’s always been about getting the president, no matter what,” Representative Jim Jordan, Republican of Ohio, shot across the room at Democrats. “It’s an obsession, an obsession that has now broadened. It’s not just about impeachment anymore, it’s about canceling, as I’ve said. Canceling the president and anyone that disagrees with them.”
Overhanging the proceedings was the deadly coronavirus pandemic, which is killing 3,000 Americans a day. A handful of lawmakers were infected, as well, after the chaotic evacuation of the Capitol, as many Republican lawmakers refused to wear masks in the secure rooms where they huddled for safety. Fearful of exposing colleagues or of putting themselves at risk to the dual health and security threats, dozens of lawmakers cast their votes remotely by proxy.
Far from contrite, Mr. Trump insisted in the run-up to the vote that his words to loyalists swarming Washington last week had been appropriate. In the days since, he has repeated bogus lies that the election was stolen from him. He denounced impeachment as part of the yearslong “witch hunt” against him, but had taken no apparent steps to put together a legal team to defend him when he stands trial.
Not long after the vote, Mr. Trump released a video condemning the violence and urging his followers to avoid a repeat in “the coming days both here in Washington and across the country” as federal authorities warned of a nationwide wave of violence surrounding Mr. Biden’s inauguration. But he did not mention his own role in instigating the violence or apologize, nor did he concede or mention Mr. Biden’s name.
The president recorded the video under pressure from aides, who have warned him that he faces potential legal exposure for the riot, which took place after a speech in which he urged supporters to “fight” the results of the election.
It also came after Mr. McConnell had released a note to Republican senators in which he did not deny that he backed the impeachment push. The leader said that he had “not made a final decision on how I will vote, and I intend to listen to the legal arguments when they are presented to the Senate.”
He also issued a separate statement in which he rejected a plea by Democrats to agree to begin the proceeding immediately. After the House vote, Mr. McConnell said there was “simply no chance that a fair or serious trial could conclude” before the inauguration.
“I believe it will best serve our nation if Congress and the executive branch spend the next seven days completely focused on facilitating a safe inauguration and an orderly transfer of power to the incoming Biden administration,” said the Senate Republican leader.
The statement did not mention the merits of the case, but privately, Mr. McConnell was seething at Mr. Trump, whom he has sworn he will not speak to again, and is said to believe he committed impeachable offenses. It would most likely take 17 Republicans joining Democrats to convict Mr. Trump, an exceedingly high bar.
Mr. McConnell’s anger was shared by some Republicans in the House, most prominently Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming, the chairwoman of the House Republican Conference and scion of a storied political family.
The other Republicans who voted to impeach Mr. Trump were Representatives Jaime Herrera Beutler of Washington, John Katko of New York, Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, Fred Upton of Michigan, Dan Newhouse of Washington, Peter Meijer of Michigan, Anthony Gonzalez of Ohio, David Valadao of California and Tom Rice of South Carolina. Together, they issued some of the sharpest condemnations of Mr. Trump, defying the prevailing view of their party.
“I’m not afraid of losing my job, but I am afraid that my country will fail,” Ms. Herrera Beutler said. “I’m afraid patriots to this country have died in vain. I’m afraid my children won’t grow up in a free country. I’m afraid injustice will prevail.”
Mr. Rice, who represents a safely Republican seat, said that he had “backed this president through thick and thin for four years.”
He added: “I campaigned for him and voted for him twice. But, this utter failure is inexcusable.”
A dozen or so other Republicans indicated they might have supported impeachment if Mr. Trump were not on the brink of leaving office or Democrats’ had slowed the process down.
Mr. McCarthy, who had privately mused about calling on Mr. Trump to resign after years of eagerly defending him, spoke out against a “snap impeachment,” warning that it would “further fan the flames of partisan division.” But he also batted down false suggestions from some of his colleagues that Antifa had actually been responsible for the siege, not supporters of Mr. Trump. He proposed censuring the president instead of impeaching him.
But there were strong signs of support for Mr. Trump as well, despite the fact that he has now lost his party the House, the Senate and the White House in the course of two years. Far-right Republicans immediately started a campaign to oust Ms. Cheney from her leadership post, which she said she would not relinquish.
While Ms. Cheney had released a statement on Tuesday announcing her intention to impeach Mr. Trump and denouncing him in scathing terms, she chose not to speak during the impeachment debate. Democrat after Democrat quoted her anyway — despite the party’s longstanding antipathy for Ms. Cheney and her father, Dick Cheney, the former vice president — effectively arguing that her backing signified a broad consensus that Mr. Trump must go.
“As Liz Cheney was saying, there has never been a greater betrayal by a president of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution. Don’t dismiss that,” said Representative Steny H. Hoyer, Democrat of Maryland and the majority leader. “As she has taken a stand, I hope others will as well.”
The vote came a little more than a year after the House impeached Mr. Trump for attempting to use the levers of power to pressure the leader of Ukraine into smearing Mr. Biden, then his leading rival for the looming 2020 election. Republicans unanimously opposed the charges then, but the themes at the center of the impeachment and subsequent trial were ultimately the same on debate Wednesday: Mr. Trump’s willingness to put himself above the nation he swore an oath to lead and abuse his power in pursuit of retaining it.
The House’s case was narrow, laid out in a four-page impeachment article that charged the president “threatened the integrity of the democratic system, interfered with the peaceful transition of power, and imperiled a coequal branch of government.”
Specifically, it said he sowed false claims about election fraud, pressured Georgia election officials to “find” him enough votes to overturn the results and then encouraged a crowd of his most loyal supporters to gather in Washington and confront Congress.
The article referred to the 14th Amendment, passed after the Civil War, which prohibits any officeholder involved in “insurrection or rebellion” from holding official office. It also quoted Mr. Trump’s own words at the rally a week ago, when he told supporters, “if you don’t fight like hell you’re not going to have a country anymore.”
This time, there were no witness interviews, no hearings, no committee debates, and no real additional fact finding beyond the public record and the plain facts of the brutal attack and Mr. Trump’ words.

Tumblr media
Should you’ve been within the paid search trade for a number of years, you then’ve most likely heard about Criteo – and even used it.
You may additionally be accustomed to Criteo Retail Media from again within the days when it may very well be described as an advert community for sponsored merchandise, circa 2016 when Criteo acquired an organization referred to as Hooklogic.
Hooklogic had constructed a enterprise by aggregating stock throughout many retailers and enabling manufacturers to bid on that stock on a CPC foundation.
As well as, you might also know that Criteo acquired an organization referred to as Storetail in 2018, to assist retailers supply new artistic codecs and focusing on choices.
However what you might need missed is the announcement of Criteo’s new Retail Media platform.
For now, I’m going to stay with this sponsored merchandise piece and the platform that powers it, as that represents an simply attainable motion merchandise going into not solely vacation, however 2021 planning.
So, let’s dive into what the Retail Media platform does for sponsored merchandise.
Commercial
Proceed Studying Under
This technology permits retailers to serve advertisements that mix into the present web site construction, appear and feel. It permits the retailer to “sell” placements in search outcomes, browse pages, and wherever else they really feel a sponsored product placement will align with consumer expectations.
So retailers can deal with being retailers, not an advert administration platform or software program builders, enabling them to get to market quicker with advertising offerings, with out absorbing the prices of proudly owning, sustaining, and constructing out an promoting expertise stack.
Which is, in the event you cease to consider it, an especially massive and costly set of duties to get executed proper.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The opposite factor that this format does is present manufacturers with an always-on choice for promoting with that retailer.
Commercial
Proceed Studying Under
Conventional retailer promoting will be very closely administrative-based, even with online-only show flights, with insertion orders, massive budgets or minimums, weeks of planning round artistic belongings and evaluate, lockout intervals, and post-campaign reporting, that may’t occur till the complete attribution interval has handed.
Whereas these bigger show buys can get you attributed in-store elevate, basket evaluation, and model halo results – it could actually take eight weeks post-campaign finish to get it.
Criteo now works with retailers in North America to supply enterprise-level self-service promoting instruments to manufacturers, together with Goal, Finest Purchase, Costco, Meijer, Macy’s, Kohl’s, Walgreen’s, CVS, and Ulta.
What’s superior with the Retail Media platform is that the advertiser can select for his or her advertisements to seem on a single retailer, or to run a marketing campaign with a number of retailers and nonetheless break down reporting on the particular person retailer stage.
Manufacturers can use funds caps to allocate funds to completely different retailers on the ranges wanted, or leverage AI to allocate funds dynamically to realize the perfect return on advert spend.
Some retailers, like Goal, already used Criteo for an unique atmosphere they name “Private Market” by which the advertisements are proven solely on course.com.
Having the ability to goal solely Goal (pun meant) is admittedly helpful to manufacturers who wish to push extra gross sales particularly at goal.com and even leverage product recognition to a necessity for extra bodily shelf house, assortment growth and in addition for these Goal Plus sellers within the market that want to advertise their merchandise and would not have in-store presence.
How It Works
Sponsored merchandise by way of Criteo is a CPC mannequin and a first-price public sale.
It’s not keyword-based. The main target is extra on the person SKUs.
All SKUs have key phrases already related to them, because of info from retailer product feeds, information collected from retailer websites, and Criteo’s AI.
Manufacturers would not have to then dedicate sources to creating creatives.
Bids will be set on the line merchandise stage and on the SKU stage. The idea of a line merchandise is definitely new within the Retail Media platform.
Commercial

Previously, you needed to sub-divide campaigns utilizing “product groups” to group SKUs.
Now, you create line gadgets, and every serves as a tactic to gasoline the technique of your bigger marketing campaign. You affiliate a retailer with every line merchandise.
This lets you have management over the place your funds goes, in addition to see retailer-level reporting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As well as, the SKU-level bidding characteristic allows you to now handle CPC bids on particular person merchandise.
Commercial
Proceed Studying Under
By adjusting a product’s bid, you possibly can regulate the product’s competitiveness within the public sale.
By the in-line enhancing software, you possibly can enter and save a brand new CPC worth for every product within the Product Bid Override discipline. The worth entered must both be equal to or larger than the minimal ground bid.
One other distinction within the new platform is that these flooring at the moment are set by the retailer, to allow them to fluctuate fairly a bit inside classes. Beforehand minimal bids have been set by Criteo for his or her run of community campaigns.
As soon as entered, the product will use the brand new CPC worth for bidding. Merchandise that don’t have a Product Bid Override worth specified will mechanically use the road merchandise bid.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With this new marketing campaign construction, there may be much more flexibility in group. For instance, you possibly can have a marketing campaign with one line merchandise for one retailer.
Commercial
Proceed Studying Under
You can too have a marketing campaign with 10-line gadgets, every with a distinct retailer. Or you possibly can have 100 SKUs on a line merchandise.
Every line merchandise has a begin date and an non-obligatory finish date. (Begin and finish dates aren’t at marketing campaign stage.)
You possibly can select to set a funds for the road merchandise, in addition to use day by day or month-to-month pacing instruments. Or, you possibly can select to not set a line merchandise funds, and depend on the funds set on the marketing campaign stage.
Your alternative.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Whereas day by day and month-to-month funds pacing was moved from the marketing campaign stage to the road merchandise stage within the new platform, attribution is now on the marketing campaign stage reasonably than the account stage.

As well as, Criteo is now offering a number of extra attribution choices. Beforehand, you possibly can solely do 30-day post-click and 1-day post-view. Choices now embrace Publish-Click on: seven days/14 days/30 days and Publish-Seen: None/sooner or later/seven days/14 days/30 days.
Manufacturers can now align with the attribution home windows they’re utilizing with different platforms in the event that they so select.

As talked about, manufacturers can now view retailer-level reporting. As well as, Criteo is normalizing metrics throughout retailers, making it simple so that you can evaluate efficiency throughout retailers.
The brand new platform additionally contains information visualization, so now you can slice and cube with customizable studies with the metrics you need.
You possibly can obtain studies instantly from the UI, or schedule studies by way of e-mail.

Nevertheless, pricing on the platform varies relying upon spend commitments and in the event you select to leverage Criteo’s managed service group for administration help.
With the launch of this new platform, Criteo has additionally advanced its pricing mannequin to supply full transparency to manufacturers, companies, and retailers.
The brand new pricing mannequin aligns with media and price pricing that’s utilized by different media shopping for instruments and creates extra transparency and adaptability to pay for what you utilize.
I extremely advocate testing the “Consumer Product Brands: It’s Time to Take Control of Your Retail Media Destiny” report performed by Forrester, commissioned by Criteo. The complete report is offered for obtain and covers the panorama of retail media as it’s in the present day. And you may try the place you sit in opposition to the respondents and their maturity into retail media as part of their course of and optimization.

How a coin lack is affecting merchants and grocery stores
CLOSE
Tumblr media
At Barrel’s and Vines, a high end Royal Oak gasoline station, indications are posted prompting clients to have the appropriate change or usage debit or credit whenever possible.
Normally, owner Ken Lucia keeps boxes of rolled coins to fill register tills to use as change at both Barrel’s and Vines areas on Woodward.
However the COVID-19 pandemic has coins– quarters, pennies, nickels and cents– in brief supply.
Retailers get their boxes of coins from banks. However, Lucia stated, the materials are low at banks.
” Our bank will just permit us to buy one roll of coin at a time,” he stated. “The banks have actually reduced offering boxes of modification out.”
A box of quarters has 50 rolls or $500 worth, while a box of cents has 100 rolls or $50 worth, Lucia stated.
In mid-June, the Federal Reserve revealed an across the country coin scarcity, which it blamed on the pandemic.
” The COVID-19 pandemic has actually substantially disrupted the supply chain and regular circulation patterns for U.S. coin,” the federal government stated in a statement. “In the previous couple of months, coin deposits from depository organizations to the Federal Reserve have actually declined substantially and the U.S. Mint’s production of coin likewise decreased due to measures put in place to safeguard its workers. Federal Reserve coin orders from depository organizations have begun to increase as areas reopen, leading to the Federal Reserve’s coin stock being minimized to below regular levels. “
On June 15, the Federal Reserve Banks and their coin circulation locations started to designate offered products of cents, nickels, pennies, and quarters to depository institutions as a short-term step.
The momentary coin allotment methodology is based on historical order volume by coin denomination and depository organization endpoint, and existing U.S. Mint production levels. Order limits are distinct by coin denomination and are the exact same throughout all Federal Reserve coin distribution locations. Limitations will be evaluated and possibly revised based upon national invoice levels, stocks, and Mint production.
Barrels and Vines is a gasoline station that sells beer, wine and alcohol and has a dining establishment inside called Saroki’s Pizzeria, that likewise uses the modification. Lucia stated he began to see the coins run low in mid-April.
Today the coin lack seems even worse.
” Some banks have been more lax than others,” Lucia said.
The scarcity makes it tough for merchants.
To save coins, Lucia said, he has resorted to rounding sales up or down.
” I try to offer modification in onesies and twosies, not in multiples,” he said.
For instance, if the sale is $4.79, he will ask customers if they mind losing a penny and assemble, providing 20 cents. Or, he will round down to $4.75 and provide a quarter.
Constance Nobis, director of Retail Market Operations at Comerica Bank, stated the bank is limiting what it provides to clients since its supply from the Fed has actually been cut by 90%.
” It’s a supply chain concern,” Nobis stated. “Typically there’s a lot of recycling. Clients bring in coin to the bank, we ship it to the Fed and we fill our order out for consumers.”
Nobis said the lack is temporary.
” As more banks open and they are able to take those coin deposits in and the Fed is going to increase what they are minting,” she said.
In the meantime, she stated, the bank is advising customers to bring in coin. It’s likewise doing central buying, doing half boxes and rationing.
” Mainly filling station and celebration shop owners are frustrated with lack of coin and we have been able to get them about 50%of what they are requesting for,” Nobis said.
That shortage might have an influence on the method you pay at grocery stores and other retailers.
At most of Meijer’s self-scan checkouts, the merchant has briefly changed to credit, debit and SNAP/EBT card use just. Self-scan will also accept Meijer gift cards.
However customers utilizing cash must utilize a cashier staffed checkout.
” While we comprehend this effort might be irritating to some consumers, it’s essential to manage the effect of the coin lack on our shops,” a Meijer spokesperson stated.
While other shops battle with the coin scarcity, Joe Gappy feels fortunate.
The owner of Prince Valley Market in southwest Detroit also owns the coin kiosk machine in his shop.
Typically, Gappy bags up the coin from the machine and it’s picked up by armored cars and truck, required to the bank and transferred into his account. Since the scarcity, he’s been bagging up the coin and recycling it for use in his shop.
And for the first time, Gappy said, the armored car service offered to buy his coins.
” They simply gave me a look for my modification,” he stated. “Last week it was $8,000”
Sam Shina, owner of a number of Imperial Fresh Markets in city Detroit and the Apollo Market Place in Detroit, also owns coin machines, but he still orders coin.
On Wednesday, among his shops was shorted rolled coin from the bank.
” I think the banks do not have quarters, dimes and nickels,” Shina said.
The shops, Shina stated, keep additional, however he likewise recycles coins that come through the coin devices that typically get moved to bags for the bank.
” It’s not good for business,” Shina stated. “How is our organisation expected to run? “There’s a great deal of uncertainty. “

BEFORE DECEMBER 25th, 2017,
There was never a moment in Casey Liem’s life where his mother wasn’t worried. For as long as he can remember, maybe even from his birth, there was always something wrong with him. If not wrong, then worrying, something that needed to be kept a close eye on. The Liem household (or rather the Meijer household) was practically on speed dial for the Kearney emergency services department. He can’t remember all the times he suddenly stopped breathing or had a seizure but he just knows it was numerous; averaging multiple times a month. It was funny, though, how these seizures and shallow breathing fits only seemed to happen in front of his mother. By the time the ambulance arrive, he’s either completely unconscious or completely fine, albeit a fading red hand print covering his infant mouth. His father can’t explain it, he never saw it, and didn’t have any reason to not believe his wife—she was a young mother, he worked too hard, she’s alone in the house all day, she was just worried.
Denise wasn’t the only one who was concerned for baby Casey. The amount of calls to 911 started to get very irritating, there were actual emergencies they needed to deal with, and the response time got slower as the calls became more frequent; they didn’t mean to put his life in jeopardy, but it was hard to feel a sense of urgency when ultimately he would be fine, if not a bit sluggish, once they arrived. Denise, young wife and mother with a youthful face and tearful eyes, wasn’t hard to feel sympathy for, but patience was running thin; Denise Meijer quickly became the woman who cried seizure. One man notices, however, just how much Denise seems to need them to come; the less they react, the more dramatic Casey’s mysterious illness is—not only does he have trouble breathing, he’s vomiting, he’s unresponsive, oh God she thinks he’s dead! (He’s not. He’s fine. He’s always fine.)
This man, Raymond Schneider, the paramedic that had the Meijer address memorized better than his own, doesn’t know much longer he could take it. One of these days he’s actually going to be dead, he quips to his wife as he slips into bed, and he says it like it’s a joke, but they both know he believes it. Each time Denise calls 911, Raymond fears it’s going to be for the last time. One more time, and Raymond has to report it. It’s just too many times for such a little body to give out for it to be a simple coincidence or disease, there has to be something wrong, something that worries him. To his surprise, the 911 calls stop. The Kearney emergency service department never hears from Denise Liem Meijer again.
The Meijer family moves to nearby Grand Island but it doesn’t take long before Scott to notice something’s off when he no longer has work to keep him out of the house (the move proves difficult for him to just up and find a job as easy as it was to quit the previous one). Denise wrings her hands while pacing next to a small Casey’s crib, just knowing there’s something wrong; the way he breathes feels too shallow, the way he squints suggests he’s going blind, the way he cries just sounds sickened. Scott can’t see or hear any of that but he believes that she does, and he knows she means well, he’s sure of it. He begs her to see someone, a therapist to stop her anxiety-filled nights of watching her son sleep, putting her fingers underneath his nose to make sure he’s still breathing only to wake him up, and Denise promises she’ll talk to someone, but the idea of talking to some therapist fills her with even more anxiety.
Scott gets a job, but grows more weary of Denise’s worrying. He’s at the tip of the cliff when Denise begins making calls to 911 and he can no longer put it off on her being alone all the time—she was the same when he was home, she’s only going to get worse when he’s not. He can’t quit his job this quickly, or at all, someone needs to bring money home and ambulance visits are not cheap. It’s therapy or he’s leaving and while Denise begs him not to make her choose, they both know she’s chosen her anxieties over him. Scott exits Casey Liem’s life as easy as he had entered it; perhaps if he had known how much worse it would get for his son, he would have stayed, or perhaps she would have done more to drive him away.
The first thing Casey Liem can remember is the blinding fluorescent light of a doctor’s office, the cold feeling of metal underneath his legs as he sits on the exam table. He doesn’t know when this memory took place, possibly at three years or maybe even six, but he remembers vividly, more vividly than the day his father walked out. He can remember the doctor, checking his temperature with some sort of instrument his child brain has assumed comes from a spaceship. He can remember the look on his mother’s face, more... disappointed than worried as the doctor tells her something Casey doesn’t care to listen to. When they leave the doctor’s office, Casey can almost sense that she’s angry about something, and Casey has the feeling that he’s done something wrong, like he didn’t give the right answers to the doctor.
He’s seven by the time he can voice his discontent. His mother’s incessant insistence that’s something wrong confuses him, but there’s nothing he can really do about it; she’s his mother and she must be right, she must know more than him. If she says something’s wrong with him, then something must be wrong, but he doesn’t feel wrong. He feels fine. He’s always felt fine, he’s always felt fine so this fine feeling must be what feeling wrong is like. When the doctor asks him what’s wrong, Casey only shrugs and directs the doctor’s attention to his mother, she knows what’s wrong. By the time he’s seven, undergoing his second exploratory surgery under his mother’s insistence that there’s something wrong with his abdomen, Casey tells the nurse wheeling him towards the operating room that he feels fine, he doesn’t want this, it hurts him; she simply tells him that this is what his mother wants and for the second time, the god of anesthesia blows its kiss.
Casey is poked and prodded like a science experiment; he is the pincushion for the surgeon’s scalpel in search for anything abnormal. It hurts to have his organs explored but his mother’s beaming smile of pride looks more like satisfaction when he awakes, maybe he can withstand the pain if she looks so happy. He knows the recovery room better than he knows his own room at home; it’s a lonely place to be, even more than a home that rarely has the warmth of a child inside it. He’s lonely, he’s barely had time to develop friendships when most of his schoolwork is sent in packets and the words on the page look more like a language he’s never learned since he’s barely had time to learn anything. By the end of sixth grade, the district tells Denise that he’s missed too much school, even the amount he’s legally allowed when so sick. She debates homeschooling him but the idea of being stuck in that house with his mother every moment of his life sounds scarier than any surgery that can be performed; for the first time, she listens to his objections, and Casey officially has to repeat the sixth grade.
Twelve years old is when things begin to change. So many overnight trips to the hospital give Denise a lot of time to become familiar with the staff and there’s one nurse in particular that pours his sympathy onto her like bathwater. Within a few months, Casey is told he’s going to have a little sister, and it’s hard to smile when there’s a breathing tube down his throat. The time between his latest surgery recovery and when Sophia arrives passes in what feels like minutes; when things change around the Liem household, they change quickly, and Casey barely feels like he has time to catch up before it seems that Denise has forgotten him.
The birth of Sophia Isabelle Liem is a blessing. For Casey, it’s a blessing in that his mother’s attention is no longer so focused on him. No longer does the god of anesthesia give its kiss to him, no longer does he wake up with a new scar decorating his chest. The downside to his blessing is that his mother’s focus is turned to Sophia, now she is the pincushion, now she is the frog underneath the scalpel, now the god has pressed its lips to hers. At twelve years old, Casey must brunt the guilt of being happy to no longer be explored in search of something wrong. Maybe, for once, there’s nothing wrong with him. Maybe, for once, he can be a child, like he was supposed to. (His freedom comes at a price, though, and seeing his infant sister be poked and prodded almost taints the taste of it.)
The 911 calls are less frequent with Sophia, though they still do happen, and Casey’s growing mind sometimes wonder if it’s because there’s an audience this time, namely him. Seizures don’t happen under his eye and he wonders if his father saw any of his reported seizing, the slowing of his breathing. Maybe there was nothing ever wrong with him. Something seems to be wrong with Sophia, though, and he sometimes fears that’s what he looked like as an infant, small and sickly, a doll that could break from being picked up too roughly. With the first official admittance of Sophia to the hospital, something about diapers not being wet and a stomach never filling, the sad story of the Liems reaches many ears and they even appear on the local news.
Once the citizens of Grand Island set their sights on the sickly children of a watery-eyed Denise Liem, donations flow in as steady as a river. Casey thinks of the money as another double-edged blessing, their station improves and suddenly they’re in a much better house (that can accommodate his mother’s boyfriend) but now it feels as if Sophia hasn’t been home in months—she’s just one years old, how long could you keep a baby away from its home? Somehow, things seem to be even worse with Sophia, and it doesn’t take many more months before the doctors that treat her (and him) become suspicious; they can’t find anything, every symptom either goes away or points to a different cause, and rumors begin to circulate that Denise is doing this herself. It’s the first time Casey ever hears the term MUNCHAUSEN SYNDROME BY PROXY and from then on, the term rattles in the back of his mind at every moment.
Suddenly the Liems, minus Denise’s boyfriend Jack, leave for Omaha. Denise tells him it’s so Sophia can get the best care in the state at the Children’s Hospital but the judgmental and suspicious stares of Grand Island’s citizens who previously held so much sympathy for them seem to push them farther east. Their arrival to Omaha is in the middle of the night to a motel, no home to move into yet, making Casey feel even more like a fugitive, run out of town because his sister was sick. It takes a bit of time before they find a house to live in and once they’ve arrived, toddler Sophia barely has time to sleep in her nursery before they take a drive to the hospital.
Entering high school in a new city in the middle of the year is hard, harder when taller and a bit older than the rest of his peers. His height and stature (really, you would never assume a boy like him would have spent a childhood in the hospital) catch the eye of the football coaches and the idea of joining football is an idea he thinks his mother will instantly reject—he could get hurt, for God’s sake, but then again, maybe that’s a reason for her to let him do it. When he asks, half expecting her to blow up at him, she simply shrugs and tells him to do what makes him happy before sorting out his sister’s pills for the day.
Football... well, Casey never knew he could feel like this. The childhood spent in hospital gowns didn’t leave much time for sports, but Casey wonders if maybe he would have been happier if he found his love earlier. It’s a perfect fit, it just makes sense to him. That and practices run long into the evening, sometimes he doesn’t get home until thirty minutes before bedtime. His mother never comes to the games, Sophia’s just too sick to spend two hours sitting in the stands, but somehow the idea of her attending makes him feel sick, he’s glad they don’t come. Football is all him. There’s no mom, no sister, no hospital trips, football is the one thing Casey has all to himself.
Football season ends, though, and suddenly Casey doesn’t have much of a reason not to be home. Baseball’s okay for tiding him over and keeping in shape but it doesn’t feel the same as football, he doesn’t love it, and that’s only in the spring. Part time jobs are his only avenue (for a bit of pocket cash, you see, mom) and when there’s no work to be done, Casey doesn’t mind a weekend long sleepover at a friend’s house. Friend’s never come to his house, though, and the parents of his friends begin to suspect something untoward is happening at the Liem household to make this boy beg to stay over for days on end. They don’t realize it’s because he’s embarrassed, he doesn’t want his friends to see his sickly sister and his worrying mother, and he doesn’t allow himself time to feel guilty over being ashamed.
Summers off from school become his own personal hell, there’s only so much work that businesses can legally give to a seventeen year old, and friendships don’t last very long when you don’t allow your friend to know anything about you and your family. Summer parties around town are the only things that keep him occupied and Casey quickly learns which alcohols have adverse effects on his medications (that he rarely takes anyways). Partying is shallow and no one asks him about his scars or his sister so shallow he becomes, a bright, beautiful smile and a hearty laugh that rarely laughs at anything actually worth laughing at. No one likes a sad boy, no one likes a sick boy, and Casey will never let you believe he’s either.
Senior year finally arrives like a dark locust cloud, already one of the older kids in school (thanks to a late birthday and a year left behind), and the only thing he fears more than another stay in the hospital is the idea of being an adult. How will he get away from them, what will he do to get away from them, what will happen to Sophia if he’s not there to supervise? (He’s rarely there anyways but it’s harder to abuse if there’s another person’s stuff stored in the next room—if only Scott Meijer knew that.) Weekend parties attendance becomes more frequent as the year comes to a close, football season is almost over, and Casey Liem wonders how long it’s going to be before something ends up wrong.
AFTER DECEMBER 25th, 2017,
There’s something wrong with Sophia Liem. The second Denise hears of reports about some strange new virus coming for America, an idea forms in her head that her children were in danger; their immune systems were so weak, Sophia was sure to be the first to get it, and Casey right after her! Any sign of a cough from either, any sort of worrying behavior, and Denise first blamed it on the virus ravaging the world before running down the list of the usual viral suspects.
Christmas was never a happy time for Casey, often too sick to enjoy the holiday and usually stuck in the hospital growing up, but the amount of gifts (bought with donations) were enough to satisfy both Liem siblings. He supposes it is nice to spend time with his sister, too; the avoidance of the Liem household is more about their mother than her and he thinks maybe he shouldn’t stay away too much, Sophia needs him. His mother needs him. (Sophia needs him to protect her from their mother.)
The second Sophia begins to cough on Christmas Eve, Denise starts to fuss over her daughter, and Casey can’t stop the blank expression that comes across his face during these situations as he packs up his sister’s to-go bag; he can’t be surprised, really, any holiday includes a trip to the doctor’s office, it’s practically their family tradition. Denise declares that they’ll go to Bergan Mercy when they get in the car as the Children’s Hospital must be so busy with the holiday festivities, and all that virus stuff on the tv must have everyone freaked out, but Casey has the strong suspicion that that term has finally caught up to Denise again.
Things don’t seem to be less hectic at the Bergan Mercy hospital but Casey knows it doesn’t matter and tunes out as soon as they enter the Emergency Reception area. Another Christmas Eve spent in the hospital, he has to wonder if Sophia still believes Santa will know where to find her if she’s not at home during the night like he used to. It takes hours for anyone to see them, Casey doesn’t even believe she’s sick–mother happens to know best, of course, better than the kid herself–but any sign of something being wrong and it’s better to be safe than sorry, even if it takes hours.
Asleep across a waiting room row of chairs, Casey awakes to the sound of screams. It’s a hospital, kids cry when they get stuck with a needle, but the sound is stronger than that, more fearful. It takes a long moment to rub the sleep from his eyes, unsure if he got a good ten hours or a good ten minutes, before he realizes something’s wrong. The halls are scarce of people, like somehow the world disappeared and forget to wake him up for the ride, and a creepy feeling crawls upon his shoulders that he has never felt in a hospital before (as much as he hated living in them growing up, they were comfortable and familiar, a home). Casey comes across the room holding his sister and his mother, only to find his sister eating his mother.
Casey had always wondered if maybe one day Sophia would snap, if she would get sick of getting sick, she wouldn’t have the grace of a younger sibling arriving to take the heat off of her like he did, and Mom would probably never stop then. Finally, on a Christmas morning that was supposed to be spent opening gifts, Sophia Isabelle Liem killed her mother.
The glassy eyes of his little sister turn on him then, showing a ferociousness in that that only held love (and a plea for help) before, and he understands then that Sophia didn’t kill their mother because of... anything. Mom was just dead, and his sister was the one who did it. As his sister lunged for him, his reflexes acted before his mind and close the door with a loud slam. Backing away from the door, he can see his sister slamming against the glass where she can still see him, and he would have stood there forever if the sounds of someone running towards him down the hallway didn’t force him to move.
Parts of the hospital seem to be the same, screams and blood and people fighting for their lives, but it feels like the other half is oddly quiet like before—maybe the... things didn’t reach every part yet, maybe there’s somewhere to be safe. With shaky palms and quick legs, Casey finds himself safe in a janitor’s closet on the ICU floor and sits with his hands placed over his ears to drown out the screams and groans running past the door outside.
Somehow in the darkness of the closet, Casey has fallen asleep among cleaner fluid and mops, and doesn’t know what time it is when he finally rises. It’s quiet again and he’s not sure if the quiet or the screams are scarier, which one suggests something worse than the other. Suddenly the door opens, bringing in a strip of light that blinds his eyes, and hears someone call to another that there’s someone in here, I think they’re alive.
Casey has slept through the action, his rescuer informs him, and he doesn’t know if he should be relieved or ashamed. The reality of the situation slaps him hard across the face–the undead walk–and Casey forces those around him to give him time to adjust, sitting on a bench on the ICU floor and staring into the wall for hours on end. There’s work to be done, though, and Casey feels better when he has a sense of purpose. They must clean out the next hallway and he chooses the emergency fire axe encased in glass to begin the culling of the undead.
Casey takes direction well (it’s why he was so beloved by his football coaches) and taking out once-alive bodies is easier when he’s being told what to do, when he’s told it’s for the better of the group. Alive bodies, however, are much harder and when the issue of leftover ICU patients comes up, Casey defiantly votes against their culling—all he can think about is if it was him or his sister in that bed, the one others want to free up by forced death, and can’t help but feel a sense of betrayal. What would they think, to know they’re dying simply because others find them a burden? No one listens to him, much like his mother never listened to his autonomy, and Casey sulks in the farther corner away from the rooms he can find when the action takes place, trying to flatten into wall paint.
Time tends to roll on, even in an apocalypse, and while the sting of betrayal bites every time he walks past now unoccupied rooms, there’s still work to do. He’s needed, his skills are needed, and this is the only thing that keeps Casey from screaming.

Republican Groups Censure Party Lawmakers Who Voted To Impeach Convict Trump
Kinzinger said 11 family members sent him a handwritten two-page note that started, Oh my, what a disappointment you are to us and to God!The letter accused him of working with the devils army, which it said included Democrats and the fake news media. We thought you were smart enough to see how the left is brainwashing many so called good people including yourself and other Republicans. You have even fallen for their socialism ideals! So, so sad!It is now most embarrassing to us that we are related to you, the family members wrote. You have embarrassed the Kinzinger family name.Kinzinger said the family members suffered from brainwashing at conservative churches.I hold nothing against them, he said, but I have zero desire or feel the need to reach out and repair that. That is 100% on them to reach out and repair, and quite honestly, I dont care if they do or not.Kinzinger said he knows his vote against Trump could imperil his political career but that he couldnt live with myself if the one time I was called to do a really tough duty, I didnt do it.
Rep Liz Cheney Wyoming

The President of the United States summoned this mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack, Cheney wrote. Everything that followed was his doing. None of this would have happened without the President. The President could have immediately and forcefully intervened to stop the violence. He did not.
Cheney is the highest-ranking House member to vote for Trumps impeachment.
Liz Cheney John Katko And Dan Newhouse Among 10 House Republicans Who Voted In Favour Of Motion
The U.S. House of Representatives voted to impeach President Donald Trump a second time on Wednesday. The House voted 232-197 in favour of an unprecedented second impeachment just one week after the violence at the U.S. Capitol.
Those 232 votes were cast in favour of the bill by 222 Democrats along with 10 Republicans, members of Trumps own party.
The Republicansinclude:
Will Trump Be Impeached
As Democrats hold a majority in the House, the vote is likely to pass.
“We have been asked to turn a blind eye to the criminality, corruption and blatant disregard to the rule of law by the tyrant president we have in the White House,” Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar said in the House debate.
“We as a nation can no longer look away.”
Did Trump’s words at rally incite the riot?
At least nine Republicans have voted in favour impeachment, but the majority remain loyal to the president.
“Instead of moving forward as a unifying force, the majority in the House is choosing to divide us further… Let us look forward, not backward. Let us come together, not apart,” Republican Tom Cole told the House.
He was one of 139 Republicans who last week voted against accepting the result of the 2020 election and Mr Trump’s defeat.
Once it has passed in the House of Representatives, the impeachment article will then head for the Senate, where a trial will be held to determine the president’s guilt.
A two-thirds majority would be needed there to convict Mr Trump, meaning at least 17 Republicans would have to vote for conviction. As many as 20 Senate Republicans are open to convicting the president, the New York Times reports.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he had not yet decided whether or not he would vote in favour of impeachment.
The Senate will not reconvene this week and probably not until 19 January, according to Mr McConnell’s spokesman.
The Gop Impeachment 10 Try To Navigate Cheneys Demise And Their Own Futures
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When 10 Republicans voted to impeach President Donald Trump on Jan.13, it marked a historic milestone: It was the most House members from a presidents party to vote to remove him from office.
But since that vote, the 10 lawmakers have cut different paths in grappling with the fallout as they consider their political futures in a party still beholden to Trump.
Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger have made their votes career-defining, arguing that pushing back against Trumps false assertions that the 2020 election was stolen is about protecting democracy and the soul of the Republican Party.
Others, such as Reps. Anthony Gonzalez , Jaime Herrera Beutler and Peter Meijer , have vocally defended their votes and Cheney amid a caucuswide push to oust her from leadership, though they have not sought to make it a marquee issue.
The rest have moved on, even if they stand by their decision, seemingly in line with House GOP leaderships argument that what is important now is opposing President Bidens agenda and regaining the majority in the 2022 midterms, not what happened after the 2020 election.

Trump Impeachment: Several Republicans To Join Democrats In House Vote
US Capitol riots
The US House of Representatives is deciding whether to impeach President Donald Trump over his role in last week’s storming of Congress.
Democrats accuse the president of encouraging his supporters to attack the Capitol building. Five people died.
Some in Mr Trump’s Republican party say they will join Democrats to impeach him on Wednesday, formally charging the president with inciting insurrection.
President Trump has rejected any responsibility for the violence.
The riot last Wednesday happened after Mr Trump told supporters at a rally in Washington DC to “fight like hell” against the result of November’s election.
As the House continued its debate, Mr Trump responded to the latest reports of planned protests, urging calm.
“I urge that there must be NO violence, NO lawbreaking and NO vandalism of any kind,” he said in statement released by the White House.
“That is not what I stand for, and it is not what America stands for.
“I call on ALL Americans to help ease tensions and calm tempers. Thank You.”
Did Any Republicans Vote For Impeachment

Today, on December 18, 2019, President Donald Trump was impeached. After a long debate, the House ultimately voted to impeach Donald Trump. This was expected, since the Democrats had a majority in the House and this was all that was needed to impeach Trump. And as expected, almost all of the Democrats voted for impeachment and all of the Republicans voted against it. But there were some differences. One former Republican voted for impeachment, but everyone who is still officially a Republican voted against impeachment.
Patrick J Toomey Of Pennsylvania
Mr. Toomey, 59, a senator since 2011, is not seeking re-election in 2022. He had denounced Mr. Trumps conduct; in a statement on Saturday, he said had decided during the trial that the former president deserved to be found guilty.
I listened to the arguments on both sides, Mr. Toomey said, and I thought the arguments in favor of conviction were much stronger.
The Gop Senators Likely To Vote For Trump’s Conviction

That would not be enough to secure a conviction of Trump, something that would require at least 17 Republican votes assuming every Democrat in the chamber votes to impeach. But it would be the largest bipartisan Senate majority in history for a presidential impeachment vote.
Heres a look at the six GOP votes seen as being in play.

Romney is viewed as a lock to vote for Trumps conviction after he was the only Republican senator to vote to remove Trump from office after his first impeachment trial last year.
Previously unreleased security footage played on the second day of the trial showed Romney narrowly missed walking into a crowd of angry rioters thanks to the quick thinking of Capitol Police Officer Eugene Goodman, who redirected Romney away from the violent crowd as it marched toward the chamber.
United States V Nixon Ruling
In a much-anticipated landmark ruling on July 24, 1974, the U.S. Supreme Court ordered President Nixon to release all White House tapes, not just selected transcripts, pertinent to the Watergate investigation. The unanimous ruling in United States v. Nixon found that the president of the United States does not possess an absolute, unqualified executive privilege to withhold information. Writing for the court, Chief JusticeWarren Burger stated:
We conclude that when the ground for asserting privilege as to subpoenaed materials sought for use in a criminal trial is based only on the generalized interest in confidentiality, it cannot prevail over the fundamental demands of due process of law in the fair administration of criminal justice. The generalized assertion of privilege must yield to the demonstrated, specific need for evidence in a pending criminal trial.
A short while after the decision was made public, Nixon issued a statement saying that, while “disappointed in the result, I respect and accept the court’s decision, and I have instructed Mr. St. Clair to take whatever measures are necessary to comply with that decision in all respects.” The president was at the Western White House in California at the time, where he remained through July 28.
Here Are All Of The House Republicans Who Voted To Impeach Donald Trump
Ten members of the GOP joined with Democrats in the vote.
President Donald Trump impeached for ‘incitement of insurrection’
The House of Representatives has voted to impeach President Donald Trump — making him the only president in American history to be impeached twice.
Unlike his first impeachment in 2019, 10 Republicans joined Democrats to charge Trump for the “incitement of insurrection” for his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol with a final vote of 232-197.
Some Republicans may have feared for their own safety if they voted for impeachment, Rep. Adam Kinzinger, one of those who voted against Trump, said. Kinzinger told ABC’s “Powerhouse Politics” podcast that some members of his party are likely holding back from voting for impeachment due to fear of highlighting their own participation in supporting the president’s false claims of election fraud.
Democrat Jason Crow, of Colorado, relayed similar thoughts in an interview with MSNBC on Wednesday morning.
“I had a lot of conversations with my Republican colleagues last night, and a couple of them broke down in tears talking to me and saying that they are afraid for their lives if they vote for this impeachment,” he said.
Here is a list of the 10 Republicans who took a stance against Trump:
Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill.“It’s not going to be some ‘Kumbaya moment’ on the floor — it’s going to be an awakening by the American people to hold their leaders accountable to their rhetoric,”
Trump Calls For ‘no Violence’ As Congress Moves To Impeach Him For Role In Riot
This time, there will be more. Some Republican senators have called on Trump to resign, and even Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he is undecided at this point.
Trump’s impeachment won’t lead to his removal even if he is convicted because of the timeline. The Senate is adjourned until Tuesday. The next day, Biden will be sworn in as the 46th president. But there’s another penalty the Constitution allows for as a result of a Senate conviction that could be appealing to some Republican senators banning Trump from holding “office” again.
While there is some debate as to the definition of “office” in the Constitution and whether that would apply to running for president or even Congress, that kind of public rebuke would send a strong message that Republicans are ready to move on from Trumpism.
Representative Jaime Herrera Beutler
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Representative Jaime Herrera Beutler of Washington State said that she would vote to impeach because she believed that the president had acted in violation of his oath of office.
I understand the argument that the best course is not to further inflame the country or alienate Republican voters, she said. But I am a Republican voter. I believe in our Constitution, individual liberty, free markets, charity, life, justice, peace and this exceptional country. I see that my own party will be best served when those among us choose truth.

A request by U.S. President Donald Trump to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate Joe Biden and his son sparked the scandal. Events
The first impeachment of Donald Trump occurred when Donald Trump, the 45th president of the United States, was by the House of Representatives of the 116th United States Congress on December 18, 2019. The House adopted two articles of impeachment against Trump: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The acquitted of these charges on February 5, 2020.
Two days after the acquittal, Trump fired two witnesses who had testified about his conduct in the impeachment inquiry: Ambassador Gordon Sondland and Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman. Vindman’s twin brother Yevgeny Vindman was also fired.
Why Is Trump On Trial
Trumps second impeachment stems from his involvement in whipping up a mob on 6 January that went on to assault the Capitol building while a joint session of Congress was convened to certify Joe Bidens Electoral College win. The invasion of the Capitol led to five deaths and the temporary suspension of the vote certification until the assailants could be removed. The House voted to impeach him for a second time a week after the events and just a little over a week from him leaving office.
GOP Sen. Mitt Romney says his impeachment vote will be based upon the facts and the evidence as is presented.Romney also says he believes that what is being alleged and what we saw, which is incitement to insurrection, is an impeachable offense. If not? what is?
Nearly All Gop Senators Vote Against Impeachment Trial For Trump Signaling Likely Acquittal
All but five Republican senators backed former president Donald Trump on Tuesday in a key test vote ahead of his impeachment trial, signaling that the proceedings are likely to end with Trumps acquittal on the charge that he incited the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
The vote also demonstrated the continued sway Trump holds over GOP officeholders, even after his exit from the White House under a historic cloud caused by his refusal to concede the November election and his unprecedented efforts to challenge the result.
Trumps trial is not scheduled to begin until Feb. 9, but senators were sworn in for the proceedings Tuesday, and they immediately voted on an objection raised by Sen. Rand Paul questioning the constitutional basis for the impeachment and removal of a former president.
Impeachment is for removal from office, and the accused here has already left office, he argued, adding that the trial would drag our great country down into the gutter of rancor and vitriol, the likes of which has never been seen in our nations history.
But Democrats argue that Trump must be held accountable for the riot, which saw the Capitol overrun and resulted in the deaths of one police officer and four rioters. Pauls argument, they said, suggests that presidents can act with impunity late in their terms.
The final vote was 55 to 45 to kill Pauls objection, with GOP Sens. Susan Collins , Lisa Murkowski , Mitt Romney , Ben Sasse and Patrick J. Toomey joining all 50 Democrats.
Us Senate Acquits Trump As Republicans Save Him In Impeachment Again
8 Min Read
WASHINGTON – The U.S. Senate acquitted Donald Trump on Saturday in his second impeachment trial in a year, with fellow Republicans blocking conviction over the former presidents role in the deadly assault by his supporters on the U.S. Capitol.
The Senate vote of 57-43 fell short of the two-thirds majority needed to convict Trump on a charge of incitement of insurrection after a five-day trial in the same building ransacked by his followers on Jan. 6 shortly after they heard him deliver an incendiary speech.
In the vote, seven of the 50 Senate Republicans joined the chambers unified Democrats in favoring conviction.
Acquittal by the numbers
How the Senate voted
Trump left office on Jan. 20, so impeachment could not be used to remove him from power. But Democrats had hoped to secure a conviction to hold him responsible for a siege that left five people including a police officer dead and to set the stage for a vote to bar him from ever serving in public office again. Given the chance to hold office in the future, they argued, Trump would not hesitate to encourage political violence again.
Trumps attorneys argued that his words at the rally were protected by his constitutional right to free speech and said he was not given due process in the proceedings.
Republicans saved Trump in the Feb. 5, 2020, vote in his first impeachment trial, when only one senator from their ranks – Mitt Romney – voted to convict and remove him from office.

The impeachment process against Richard Nixon began in the United States House of Representatives on October 30, 1973, following the series of high-level resignations and firings widely called the “Saturday Night Massacre” during the course of the Watergate scandal.
Following an April 1974 from the Judiciary Committee, edited transcripts of 42 taped White House conversations relevant to the Watergate cover-up were finally made public by Nixon. However, the committee pressed for the audio tapes themselves, and subsequently issued subpoenas for additional tapes, all of which Nixon had refused. That same month, Nixon also refused to comply with a subpoena from special prosecutorLeon Jaworski for 64 Watergate-related tapes. Ultimately, on July 24, 1974, the United States Supreme Court issued a unanimous decision against Nixon, which ordered him to comply.
South Carolina Rep Tom Rice
Rices vote for impeachment stunned those familiar with the South Carolina lawmakers record as a staunch Trump defender, especially during his first impeachment.
I have backed this President through thick and thin for four years. I campaigned for him and voted for him twice, Ricesaid in a statementWednesday evening. But, this utter failure is inexcusable.
Rice voted for motions to object to certifying Bidens Electoral College victories in Arizona and Pennsylvania last week, votes that came after security teams cleared the building of rioters and members returned from a secure location. Rice told local media he waited until the last minute to cast those votes because he was extremely disappointed in the president after the riots and that Trump needed to concede the election. He also said last week that he did not support impeaching the president or invoking the 25th Amendment to remove him from office.
Rice, a member of the Ways and Means Committee, has supported the Trump administrations position 94 percent of the time over the past four years. He represents a solidly Republican district in the Myrtle Beach area that Trump carried by 19 points in November. Rice, who has had little difficulty holding his seat since his first 2012 victory, won his race by 24 points in November.
Who Are The 10
Here they are in order of the most pro-Trump districts:
1. Rep. Liz Cheney, Wyoming’s at-large district: Trump won Wyoming 70% to 27%, and she’s the third-ranking leader in the House. So for her not just to vote in favor of impeachment but also issue a stinging rebuke is quite the step. Cheney was unequivocal in her statement, saying Trump “summoned this mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack.” She called what Trump did the “greatest betrayal” of a U.S. president ever.
2. Rep. Tom Rice, South Carolina’s 7th Congressional District: This is one no one saw coming. The congressman, who has served since 2013, comes from a pretty pro-Trump district , and there was no indication he would do so beforehand. Even during his vote, Twitter was alight with speculation that Rice had cast the wrong vote. Turns out, he cast it exactly as he wanted to. Later Wednesday, Rice : “I have backed this President through thick and thin for four years. I campaigned for him and voted for him twice. But, this utter failure is inexcusable.”

Burr, who has said he will not seek re-election, had previously voted to dismiss the impeachment trial on constitutional grounds. Burr’s term expires in 2022.
“I have listened to the arguments presented by both sides and considered the facts. The facts are clear,” explained Burr in a statement.
“By what he did and by what he did not do, President Trump violated his oath of office to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States,” he explained, adding that he didn’t come to “this decision lightly.”
In Trump’s 2019 Impeachment Trial Romney Was The Only Republican Who Voted To Convict Already Six Times That Many Have Broken With The Ex
A second defendant has stepped into the dock in this firstweek of Donald Trump’s impeachment trial. The brilliant work by the House managers contrasted with the inept showing by the former president’s counsel so far leaves no good excuse for anything other than a conviction. That one-sidedness puts the U.S. Senate itself on trial, threatening serious reputational, career and historical consequences for senators who fail do the right thing vote to convict Trump.
As a trial lawyer who served as co-counsel for the first impeachment of then-President Trump, I had been expecting surprises and there were many. The Housemanagers enlivened what was supposed to be a constitutional debate Tuesday by previewing their main argument: that Trump knowingly incited the insurrectionists. It’s amazing that Trump’s lawyers were caught off guard by this. We did the same thing in the 2019 impeachment trial, using the opening debate over whether to call witnesses to preview the entire case. Nevertheless, Trump’s counsel were thrown into confusion they both showed it and one admitted that they’ll “have to do better.”

HOW WE CAME TO BE - pt 2
Prompts #2  “Don’t mind me. I’ll just be in the corner, having another existential crisis.” & #17  “Will you be quiet?” “I didn’t say anything!” “Well stop thinking so loud!” & #24  “How drunk were you last night?” “Well, I still have my pants on.” “Those aren’t your pants.”
A/N: So, I had some people ask for me to make a part 2 of my last imagine. I had already intended on continuing it at some point, but that cemented my decision it the next installment, this one.
You’ll find that this is split into parts. This installment is, of course, Part 1. It goes back and forth with flashbacks. This is my first time experimenting with this style of writing, do pardon any mistakes.
My imagines all follow a certain storyline, but out of order, so they don’t need to all be read to understand them. You can take them as stand-alone. HOWEVER- this one follows IMMEDIATELY AFTER the SPENCER X READER (all caps) imagine. Again, you don’t need to read that one, but it was asked for, so here it is.
When I post these, it’s usually in a hurry. So, please excuse any errors with indents and line breaks. I’m using LibreOffice, not Microsoft. I have to re-learn everything. Thankfully it’s not too different.
Not all the prompts that were requested in this turn are in this part. I think it’s just one. The others will be in the other parts. I didn’t mean to have this installment get so wordy, but the words just kept coming, and before I knew it, there were sixteen pages! It was insane.
If you ever want to be tagged in any of my works, just let me know, and I’ll add you. Enjoy!

You couldn’t understand what the voices were shouting. You just knew that they were there. The lights behind your eyes were blinding even though your lids were closed. The pain covered your entire body and you just really wished you could remember what was going on.
It was all becoming too much before it started to fade away.
————
Your first friend in the new city had been getting on you lately about stressing out over your first full of week of your new job. You knew it wasn’t going to be easy because your job was not what you went to school for. Not that you actually finished your degree, but you retained what you were taught. For the most part, at least.
You were standing in front of your full-length mirror in your barely furnished apartment, deciding if your outfit was appropriate enough for this particular outing. Secretly, not -so secretly, you were hoping that something would happen and it would get canceled. Maybe someone would call sick, or just wouldn’t want to do it anymore. The beeping from your phone alerting you of Pree’s arrival to your apartment told you that there was no getting out of tonight’s festivities.
Don’t mind me, you thought. I’ll just be in the corner having another existential crisis.
After you had sent a responsive text, you made your way out of your apartment and into her car.    “Ready to have the most fun you've had in like...ever??” Your friend was fluffing her natural hair while you got yourself situated.
“I want to say yes but...” You fixed the cuff of your jacket.
Pree put the car in drive and made her way to the restaurant. “I’ve seen your Facebook. You aren’t a shy person, appropriate and a good girl, but not shy. Is it the new city?”
You sighed and gave a shrug. “I don’t know. It’s a feeling? I don’t know if this job is teaching me to be more intuitive or if I’m just so exhausted that I’m losing my edge.”
The rest of the ride was silent but short. Honestly, you could have walked there if you had known where to go. You’d only been on the east coast for less than a month, so you hadn’t really been able to explore the neighborhood. The only thing you were able to locate by heart were the local grocery store, your job, and the closest place that served chai tea lattes. Sometimes you had to ask where the nearest CVS was. You had already made the mistake of asking where Meijer was and then felt like an idiot immediately following.
You didn’t even realize it Pree put the car in park and turned it off. She nudged Your shoulder when she realized you weren’t going anywhere. You blinked a few times, unhooked the seat belt and made your way out onto the cement of the parking lot.
You took the time to take in your surroundings. It was evening, so all the streetlights were on. There were some fairy lights as decorations on different trees along the walkway and on awnings of bistros and cafes. You always dreamed of being in the city at night with the skylines and the atmosphere that came with it, and you finally got to live it.
“Are we just going to stand around gawking all day? Or are we going to go get some food? Because let me tell you about the hunger I have after chasing my two toddlers around all day.”
You giggled and linked arms before making your way to the eatery.
The two of you walked into the restaurant, and Pree gave a name before you were led to a table full of people talking and laughing. The New-City-Blues came out, and you felt the shyness win over. This isn’t me, you thought, I’ve never been shy before.
A woman with blonde hair and a flower in her headband stood up and embraced your friend.
  “Pree! It’s been so long!”
“Oh, Penelope! I know! It’s been so crazy trying to get together! I can’t believe we finally got the chance to see each other. Oh!” Your friend turned to you and put a hand on your lower arm and faced the group as a whole. “This is y/n. She’s new to the city, actually new to the east coast in general.”
You resisted tucking your hair behind your ear and smiled towards everyone. “Hey! I’m new.”
Everyone gave a laugh besides the man sitting over towards the right of the big round table. He wasn’t even looking up like the rest of his friends. You looked away when someone spoke up.
“Sit! We love fresh meat!” The woman with dark hair and brilliantly long eyelashes said with a warm smile.
You obliged with a chuckled sat in the seat between Penelope and a tan man sipping red wine. You looked in his direction and offered him a pleasant smile which he returned.
You felt a new presence to your left and caught sight of the waiter taking yours and Pree’s drink order. You ordered a simple glass of ice water with lemon and sat back to watch the dynamic of the table. You knew that Pree was adoptive cousins with Penelope but beyond that, you had no clue who anyone else was and their relations to each other. As if sensing your confusion, the woman who joked with you before you sat spoke up.
“I’m Emily, by the way. I work with Penelope. The same with Dave,” she signaled to the man next to you and continued down the table. “Derek, JJ, Aaron-we call him ‘Hotch,' and then Spencer.”
“Oh wow,” you giggled. “You guys must be a tight-knit family, huh? That’s cool. That’s how everyone is at my job too, so far.”
“What do you do?” JJ asked, taking a sip of her drink.
“Stuff I didn’t go to school for.” You gave another chuckle. “I’m a DSS, Direct Support Staff at a group home.”
“You don’t need a degree for that,” Spencer spoke from where he sat, almost analyzing you as you talked.
You blushed, nearly embarrassed. “Uh, no. I received on the job training, and I’ll take courses as I go. I did attend some technical training back home before I was placed in Virginia.”
“What’d you go to college for?” Derek had asked before the waiter stopped at the table to take the food order.
After everyone was situated with their choices and the waiter walked away, you resumed the conversation.
“I went for a degree in ECE, but I realized I couldn’t deal with parents. I love kids but sometimes those parents...” You let the sentence drift as you took a sip of water.
Eventually, the conversation drifted away from you, and the food arrived. You realized during one of the side conversations that you were sitting with a group of federal agents. You tried to hide your surprise, but by some of the not-so-subtle smirks, you weren’t so sure you were successful.    When the conversation turned towards relationships, you again became the center. Since you were still so new to the city, everyone was curious to your stance. You had explained that you were single and hadn’t been in a relationship for quite some time, you noticed Spencer gain a look in his eyes. The thing was, you couldn’t quite tell what he was thinking.
Spencer had been an enigma the entire meal. You couldn’t figure out what he thought because his actions seemed distant but he would look at you a certain way that made you question what he thought. You weren’t sure why it mattered, though. I may never see these people again. Why does it bother me, that this dinner might not mean anything?
Conversations were slowly dying down, and you could feel the scene changing, everyone was getting ready to leave. You’d had fun with your new acquaintances, and you thought they helped you get used to meeting new people in your new city. Maybe you’d get over the New-City-Blues and become comfortable?
When everyone was discussing payment for the meal, you could hear ringing, and everyone watched as Hotch answered his phone. He had said the words “We’re on it,” and there was a collective groan at your table.
“Well there goes the weekend,” Derek said as he began to collect his things along with everyone else.
Dave agreed to pay the check, you were entirely grateful, and the group said their goodbyes to you and your friend.
“Good to see you again, Pree,” Hotch nodded at her. “Y/N, it was nice to meet you. Good luck on the ventures in your new life. New cities can be hard. Don’t let it get to you.”
You nodded your thanks, and the other agents followed suit in addressing you. Everyone had been pleasant and polite until you got to Spencer. He wouldn’t shake your hand, he barely even acknowledged you. You didn’t understand why he was so put off with you.
You scrunched up your eyebrows when you saw him turn around and look at you as the group was walking out of the restaurant.
“So, what did you think?” Pree asked. “Do you like them?”
Your eyes never left Spencer’s as he blushed and turned about face to keep up with his group and disappear into the night. “Yeah. I think.”
———
All you could hear were voices. Voices and a slight buzzing. You thought someone was holding your hand, but you couldn’t tell. You couldn’t really feel your body through the numbing pain. You wanted to speak up, to talk, but you couldn’t get anything to move.
You had a hard time remembering the last thing you were doing. Maybe you were at the grocery store? Maybe you were at work? Was anyone with you?
What’s happening to me? Where am I?
———
“I’ve only talked to him once since the dinner. And that was when I ran into him at the coffee shop, and I bumped into him and nearly made him spill his coffee. All over me. Pardon me if something feels off here.”
You grabbed the shirt in your closet on the orange hanger and held it up to your body while standing in front of the mirror. You should have realized that Virginia weather was the same as Michigan. They had all the seasons, plus eastern seaboard storms. Sometimes the storms could get scary, everyone back home warned you. Too bad you never listened.
Pree was on the other line, also going through her closet. “So? You guys went to dinner. It’s like you’re already beyond your first date. You can go on a second one now.”
“That’s not how that works.” Your lips made a straight line that you wished your friend could see. You were so over the conversation and the topic of one Dr. Spencer Reid. “I went with you, and I left with you. We went on a date, not Spencer and I.”
“Well, there you go! This can be your first date-”
“I am not going on a date with Spencer! Not a first, not a second! Not any number of any dates. Ever. He’s probably a very, pleasant and enjoyable person. But you somehow completely missed how he and I were to each other at dinner that night. I don’t see us becoming anything for a long time.” You tossed the shirt to the side and grabbed another.
“Just think about it, please? You two would be so cute. He could keep you warm during these stormy nights…”
You could almost hear her smirk on the other end. The only thing keeping you warm while the storms pass would be hot coffee, hot tea, or hot cider. Spencer, last time you checked, wasn’t any of those options.
You could hear the wind pick up outside and you began to grow worrisome. You and Pree were supposed to get together before the storm hit full force and ride it out in a safe location. Your boss had already called you and let you know that the day shift would just switch over and get paid overtime. You were left with the opportunity together with someone who wasn’t a rookie to the weather and feel secure.
   Why did I leave Michigan?
“It’s about to escalate outside, I’m going with whatever I have in my bag already. Be ready when I get there?. I’ll text you when I’m outside. Please move as fast as you can.”
After the two of you had ended the call, you threw whatever you could find into your overnight bag and moved on to grab your toiletries. You counted in your head and passed your hand over the box of tampons and went for the drawer with your makeup and such. You threw whatever you could reach into your bag and quickly made your way into your living room.
After going over your mental checklist, you became grateful that your lease didn’t allow pets. You would have cried and stayed just to be with whatever animal you kept. You were too much of a bleeding heart sometimes, you’d heard people say, but you didn’t really care. Cats cut the loneliness from your life.
You phone pinged, and you walked out your door, locking it. As you made your way to the staircase, you looked at your screen to see if Pree had said where she parked. You hoped it would be right out front, but you weren’t so sure.
The screen read a number you didn’t recognize but with the same area code as where you lived. You swiped the screen and unlocked your phone to read the message.
Pree got caught up in the wind and had to make a detour. She asked me to get you on my way in.-Spencer
   Wait, what?
You sent a text back asking him where he parked and mumbled not so nice things about your friend to yourself. You got a reply and ran to his car. The wind and rain made it difficult, but you opened his passenger side door and got inside.
After you had buckled in you raked the hair out of your face and released a breath you didn’t know you were holding. You slightly shivered, and you couldn’t tell if you were chilled by the oncoming storm or just the wind. You watched as Spencer silently turned up the heat in his car and all of a sudden you didn’t think the weather had anything to do with it.
“Are you okay?” He asked from his seat next to you.
You gave a quiet nod and fished your cell out of your pocket, trying to send Pree a text to ask her what was going on and if she got someplace safe. You really wished you had been more familiar with your city because you had no clue where Spencer was taking you. You began to think of your conversation from earlier with Pree.
“How do you know Garcia’s cousin?”
You turned to him. “Huh?” Yeah, that was a brilliant response.
“Sorry, I mean Penelope. We call her ‘Garcia’ at work. How did you meet her cousin?” The man’s tone was easy going and that only made you more concerned.
“I uh...We attended the same CPR course. We sat at the same table.”
“You weren’t CPR/First Aid certified back in Michigan?”
You scrunched your eyebrows. “The credentials don’t transfer over state lines.”
“Oh yeah. I knew that. My bad.” He drummed his thumbs on the steering wheel.
“How did you know I was from Michigan?”
He blinked. “You told us at dinner.”
You shook your head. “No. No, I didn’t. I didn’t say anything about my home state. All I said was that I had training back home. Nothing about where it actually is.”
“Pree must have mentioned something then. I got it confused. Sorry.”    You were going ask him more questions, but he stopped the car and turned it off.
“We’re as close as we’re going to get to the building. I already had you cleared so it shouldn’t be a problem getting you in. You just have the one bag, right?”
   A nod.
“If it’s heavy enough, it’ll help us get inside faster. Everyone else is already inside. I just have my bag so let’s grab our things and make a run for it.”
You felt wary that he knew where you were from. You know for a fact that you didn’t say anything to him. Had Pree told him? Wouldn’t she say if she had? Either way, the storm wasn’t the only thing concerning you. What was the deal with Spencer?
