K-Pop Spotlight: WEi

As they transition from an unfamiliar first love to experiencing new passions, WEi is taking their fans, affectionately dubbed RUi, along for the journey. This week, we’re highlighting WEi to celebrate their latest mini-album [Love Pt.2 : Passion]. We caught up with the six-member boy group to chat about love songs, their first two years making music together, and their ideal locations to visit on holiday. Check out our full interview below!

Tell us about your new mini-album [Love Pt.2: Passion] and what you hope fans take away from it.

YONGHA: We’ve been continuing our album journey with the Love series, and I believe it reflects the passion that we have, just like the album is named after. We hope fans can watch how WEi’s love develops throughout the series.

DONGHAN: We highly recommend that fans would pay attention to our sexy vibes through this album!

Which non-WEi songs would make up the soundtrack of your lives?

SEOKHWA: I believe I have that popping magnetism that would make everybody around me happy. That’s why I feel like “POP” by Nayeon would be the right soundtrack for me.

JUNSEO: For me, it’s anything “4” by LANY. The song tells how the singer could do anything for their loved ones, and I relate to that a lot when I think of my fans.

Your fifth mini-album explores different definitions and ways of experiencing love–what are some of the first love songs you remember loving?

SEOKHWA: I remember singing Pixie Lott’s “Mama Do” back then. I fell in love with the song after watching Lee Hi singing it on K-Pop Star.

DONGHAN: I fell in love with K-pop after being obsessed with “U” by Super Junior.

What’s your favorite genre that WEi has experimented with so far? Are there any genres you want to try in the future?

SEOKHWA: We did try a lot of different genres. Whether it was sexy, or hip-hop, I think we targeted genres that were more popular with the audience. I personally love “BYE BYE BYE” the most. Rather than being an experimental artist, I wish to be an artist that can color any type of genre into WEi’s style.

DONGHAN: I loved working with all WEi songs! If there were a genre I would like to try, that would be…something that can show the sexier side of WEi.

If you could go on a special holiday anywhere in the world, where would you go and who would you bring with you?

YONGHA: I’ve always wanted to go to Iceland. I would love to watch the northern lights and go camping with our members.

YOHAN: My holiday would be staying at home…with my family that I love the most.

Is there a moment that you’d consider the highlight of your career up to now?

SEOKHWA: There were a lot of moments…but two stand out the most. During our showcase for our 3rd mini-album, my parents came to see me, and I cried a lot. Even our staff and members were crying too. The second moment was during our first concert in Korea. It was unforgettable because the members and I shared the same feelings during that concert, starting from the entrance.

DAEHYEON: I remember the last night of our first concert when we were commenting on stage. We all cried for a long time. It was because of thinking back on all we have done to come this far, and the time it took to see our fans in real life finally.

This year marks your second anniversary together—which member would you each say you’re closest with, and has that changed since your debut?

YONGHA: I’ve never thought about this thoroughly because all of us have gotten along with each other since day one. We are always happy together. :)

DONGHAN: I have specific moments where I need peace, so I like to be with members who are quiet and chill (maybe not SEOKHWA, though, haha). All jokes aside, WEi, as a group, we have gotten along really well since our debut.

Build Up Episode 0: Getting to Know the Boys Part 2: Team Soul

Hey friends! Continuing my introductory posts about the guys on MNET's Build Up before I can dive into proper recaps, here's the low down on Team Soul -- their background, basic info, and my opinion on their teaser performance (and other performances). (I did Team Allround last time.) Let's go!

Same disclaimers apply -- 1) these are all excellent vocalists and I am just splitting hairs here 2) this is taking forever and screencaps with my video source are tricky, so please forgive my awkward screencaps and occasional typos. Thank you!!

Ma Jaekyung

Jaekyung is 27 and from a group called Romeo, where he was the main vocalist and performed under the name of Kyle. He also appeared on Mixnine, that blighted show that produced a group that never debuted. It was such a fiasco, ugh, and so many trainees went through hell for nothing. Bitsaeon from M.O.N.T. , Jeong Inseong from KNK, and Donghun from A.C.E. all went on that as well, so they all might have gotten friendly then.

Jaekyung (and the other members of Romeo) also went on Peaktime, a show for idol groups that had already debuted but weren’t super successful, including Vanner (who won!), M.O.N.T, and BDC, so he may have met Taehwan, Bitsaeon (again), and Hong Seongjun. When Romeo was on Peaktime, they performed the SHINee song Juliette, which is a cute choice since that’s the name of their fandom. And then MNET didn’t bother airing that performance. Thanks, MNET! Themnet.

So, as for his group itself. Romeo was a 7 member group that debuted in May of 2015, when he would have been 18 years old. The group did slightly better in Japan than they did in Korea, but none of their Korean singles charted at all and most of their MVs have fewer than 200,000 views. Their biggest hit appears to be Lovesick. When the guys from Romeo went on Peaktime, they revealed that Romeo had disbanded at some point in the past.

In Jaekyung’s k-profiles listing, it says he’s” a 4D” kind of guy, so I guess we should watch out for his personality, if MNET will show it. It’s hard to picture a guy in a tan blazer as wacky, but we’ll see!

His teaser song was V25, Passing by Kim Bum Soo. For me, he has a really nasal tone to his singing that isn’t my favorite, and I am not a huge fan of his kind of wobbly vibrato, but like everyone on this show, he’s essentially a very good vocalist, with what seems like a very good sense of pitch. Again, it’s a ballad and my ears sort of turn off, so I’ll keep an open mind.

Seokhwa

Here is Kang Seokhwa, who is in WEi. He also went on YG Treasure Box, where he would have met CIX’s Seunghwan, and Produce X 101, where he ranked 35th and would have met two of the all rounders on this show, Choi Suhwan and BDC’s Hong Seongjun.

WEi, pronounced something like “we-eye”, is a six member group that debuted in 2020. WEi is almost entirely made up of contestants from Produce 101, Produce X 101, and Under 19, including some who won their seasons. Seokhwa is their main vocal. The WEi song Spray spent some time on my playlists recently, but I don’t know many of their other songs. WEi’s most popular member, Johan, is significantly more popular than the others; he came in first place in Produce X 101. Their videos get around 10-15 million views each, putting them slightly lower in the popularity ranking than CIX and AB6IX, but leagues ahead of IMFACT and Romeo.

I checked out an MR removed video of Spray and Seokhwa was really stable, so I can see why he’d come on the show. He’s V37, and it’s a ballad and you know me by now so it’s hard for me to give this a chance but he has a sweet voice that sounds best when he’s singing more softly, which can’t be said of everyone on this show. We’ve got a lot of belters here! He strains a bit on the higher notes, and I feel like he closes his throat a bit when he belts, but doesn’t get too nasal, which is good. He’s young yet -- he’s only 23, one of the younger people on the show -- and I hope he keeps working on his voice, because he has a lot of potential.

Donghun

Donghun will turning 31 at the end of February of this year (2024), and he’s already done his military service.

He is the main vocal of A.C.E., a five member group under Beat Interactive/Swing Entertainment that debuted in 2017 with the song Cactus. Their songs don’t chart in Korea, but they get into the top twenty on the US World Chart, because USA has taste, yo.

If there’s one song of theirs that I think you’d know it would be Goblin (Favorite Boys). But there’s also Under Cover, which is also a banger. Whoever did the subtitles on their older videos puts the names of the singers in, so you can easily find Donghun in their videos. Some of their older songs have 15-20 million views, but their newest comeback, an English language mid-tempo ballad called Effortless, has less than a million views, maybe because it’s in English? Or because it’s a mid-tempo ballad? I don’t know, if you like Who Do You Love by Monsta X, songs like that, you might like Effortless. Really, their songs are good. I feel like it’s a weird situation where everyone likes A.C.E. but somehow they’re still kind of nugu. I know, that doesn’t make sense.

Donghun went on Mixnine (he won 8th place and should have debuted), so he probably knows the other Mixnine contestants on this show: Bitsaeon from M.O.N.T., Ma Jaekhyung from Romeo, and Jeong Inseong from KNK. He may also know Park Jeup from when they both went on I Can See Your Voice 4.

He set himself up for a tough time by singing an EXO song for his teaser song (V20, Miracles in December). Literally no one can sing it like they can. Still, he does pretty well. He has an appealing warm vocal color and he really goes for that long held note, holding it with good breath support. I just worry because I can almost feel his throat straining on the higher notes. He hits them, but it’s got to hurt. He also relies on some pretty loud background vocals so it’s harder to tell how much of it is live. Despite that, he’s an excellent idol singer and I’ll always support A.C.E. and him.

Lee Minwook

Minwook is 23 and is in a group called Newkidd. I guess he likes vests? What, oh what, what on earth is up with the styling for these guys? Most of them are dressed like they’re going to a college interview. I don’t get it!

As far as I know, Minwook hasn’t been on any other survival type shows, making him one of the 15 members of the cast who haven’t (and 4 of those are musical actors).

Newkidd is a 7 member group under J-FLO Entertainment, an agency that manages only them, and the debuted in 2019. Most of their MVs get a million views or fewer. From what I can tell, their most popular song is Tu Eres, featuring the Spanish refrain “tu eres, tu eres, tu eres bonita” (you are, you are, you are pretty). The comments on the video are mostly in Spanish and show a lot of excitement about hearing Spanish in a Kpop song, and I can’t blame them! Representation! So maybe Newkidd is more popular in Spanish speaking countries and is courting that market. That’s smart -- it’s a huge market!

In his teaser, Minwook was V09, The Manuel by Eddy Kim, an example of a ballad I actually like -- it has some interesting chord progressions and isn’t sappy at all. I also like his performance. He seems to just be singing live while accompanied by just one guitar, which gives me faith in his vocals. I think his voice might be more “unique” than “soul” but these categories are pretty reductive anyway. He puts a lot of warmth into his lower notes and makes you almost feel like you understand what he’s singing. He doesn’t display his higher register or belt as much here, so I’ll be waiting to see more of what he can do.

Lim Sanghyun

Sanghyun is listed as a singer-songwriter, and he’s 27. He’s considered a ballad artist specifically, and is signed to MNH entertainment, where he releases mostly digital singles. I know the ballad market in Korea is really big, even if it’s not my favorite, so go for it, Sanghyun!

His teaser was V14, one of those kinds of ballads I hate so much that it’s hard for me to be fair. He sings in that classic K-ballad style, that kind of gruff whisper-sing, which can go either way for me depending on the song.I don’t think he ever really lets go and belts in his teaser, so I’ll be curious to hear what that would sound like.

Bain

This is Bain, age 22, and I adore his voice. (His name is pronounced “bane”, if you’re wondering, based on the hangul.)

Let me talk about him for a moment.

No, wait. Instead of me talking, you should just listen to this. It’s just a straight forward, earnest cover of Oliva Rodrigo’s Driver’s License, with no winky “ha ha I’m a boy singing this,” no sarcasm. Just a pure performance. His vibrato is so sweet. He exhibits barely a trace of nasality, and when it’s present, it’s for the emotion of the song. The notes he hits in his full chest voice? I can’t believe it. And his mixed register is like, chef’s kiss. I can’t. I just can’t. I’d never heard of him before this show, but I heard this performance and I was good. Even my fella was like, “wow, this guy has technique.” So you’re going to have to accept that I’m a Bain fan and will be cheering for him.

I had to look into Just B. They’re a 6 member group under Bluedot Entertainment, a subdivision of Kakao that manages only them. They debuted into 2021, and their members were contestants on Under 19, I-land, and a few other survival shows. (Side note: I watched a lot of I-land, but never saw any of Under 19. Starting to think I should add it to the list.) JustB has a few title tracks out at this point and they usually get about 10 millions views each. I listened to a few of them over the last few days (it’s taking me a while to write this recap) and I’ve come to like a few of their songs. Their most recent comeback is called Medusa, and though the lyrics make negative amounts of sense, it’s pretty catchy. I also liked Damage quite a bit. The group doesn’t seem to have set positions, but it seems that Bain and Geonu are more or less the main vocals.

Jay

Jay Chang, V02, age 22, famous for almost making it into Zerobase1, landing in 10th place. He’s American, with a white-Filipino-Chinese ethnic background, and on Boys Planet, he was extremely popular among the “Global” voters, but not very popular among the Korean voters. He also went on another show called Under 19 at some point, if you watched that -- I didn’t, but maybe I should. In case you didn’t watch Boys Planet, here is his initial audition to Rush Hour,and here is his performance of Exo’s Love Me Right (he was main vocal).

I know that most of my 3 or 4 readers are Jay fans, and that is cool by me. I’ve always thought he has a really really lovely, clean vocal color, he has good stage presence, and I think he’s basically a nice guy, though he sorta gives me fuckboi vibes sometimes. I also think -- and don’t get mad at me, ok? -- I also think that he needs to work on his pitchiness and nasality. That’s true in both the opening notes of his Rush Hour audition, and at points in his Baby Baby teaser song. He was one of the top 3 or 4 vocalists among the Boys Planet boys, but he’s in a different setting now and might just be outsung by the other vocalists here. I hope that you’re ok with that. I’m not saying that he’s a bad singer. Everyone on this show is a very good singer, and Jay is also a very good singer! I’m just looking for a voice that can compete with D.O.’s voice, and my standards are up in the sky. (Hanuel wilo fly fly!)

Jung Soomin

Jung Soo-min loves slightly goofy, informal outfits that scream “Hi, I’m American!” Which he is -- born in Chicago. That's about all I know about his background.

Check out his performance, V30, a really sweet cover of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You,” in which he accompanies himself on the guitar. I think it speaks for itself, but I’ll say a few words anyway. I really like his voice -- sweet, light, a little textured. Great agility, and good performance of the emotion/feeling of the words. Just delightful. I’ll forgive your hat.

Here he is on tiktok talking bout his experience on the show (in English). He says that his attitude toward competition is to just do the best he can, that the competition is really with himself. He seems like a nice guy.

Kim Seongjeong

Seongjeong is a musical actor, and his performance in V16 shows that. It’s not a style of singing that I tend to respond to, but I respect its natural quality and hard-earned technique. Vocally, he wouldn’t at all be out of place on Broadway. Considering his rich timbre and excellent breath support, I’d be interested to hear him sing something more in the pop or r&b style to see what it would sound like. My sleuthing tells me that he’s 25 (born in 1999) and acted in Hadestown and West Side Story. And look at that smile! Totally transforms his face.

Park Joohee

Joohee is another one of the contestants I just can’t find much info on. His teaser song was V15, Stand by Me by SHINee, and it was perfectly nice. Not mind blowing, but easy to listen to. He has good agility and a nice vocal color, but seems to lack breath support -- either that, or he was just really nervous, which seems likely. Also, the camera hardly ever shows him, so it was really hard to get a screencap of him.

Daehyeon

Spoils you but in a subtle way. He doesn’t like you making a big deal out of it. Helps you out on your shoes like you’re a princess. Let’s you use his jacket if it’s cold. Buys you heat packs to warm your hands. If he’s cooking, he’s cooking for you too. Even if you say you’re not hungry. Lots of small gestures but rarely any big ones. Very low key. But one thing that he’s very obvious with is hand-holding. If anyone looks at you for too long, he’s holding your hand and kissing it to claim his territory.

Donghan

I feel like he’d be a very classic romantic guy. Holding doors open for you, pulling out your chair, flowers, chocolate, teddy bears. He’d be very into showing up and showing out for you. It doesn’t even have to be a special occasion. Every occasion with you is special to him. Not into extravagant gifts because he wants to surprise you often and prefers to take you on nice dates or on fun trips.

Yongha

He’d be a bit clingy as a boyfriend, always wanting to hangout and talk. It would borderline seem toxic how much he wants to know what you’re doing or where you are but it’s out of pure curiosity and wanting to know you’re safe. He’s never controlling and doesn’t tell you what you can or can’t do. He’s just interested in your day and likes getting updates as it’s happening instead of at the end of the day when it’s all over. Of course, he’s also giving you all the details of his day as it’s happening too. It’s only fair.

Yohan

Like Donghan, I think he’s a very classic guy. His gestures might be a bit fancier and spread out though. That expensive outfit you eyed when you were out shopping together? He surprised you with it a week later. The designer shoes you liked on Instagram were waiting on your bed when you got home from your work trip. He wants to spoil his baby. If you like getting your hair and nails done, he’ll pay for it if you let him pick the style of your hair or color of your nails.

“See? I pay attention to the things you like.”

Seokhwa

He gives me vibes of the kind of cheesy boyfriend. And by that I mean he’d like to have matching couple items and outfits. Not 24/7 and certainly not down to the underwear but matching colors or matching patterns would be his favorite. Especially for random occasions. Even if you aren’t going to see each other all day, he’ll still want to match. I get the feeling he’d like the laid back dates. Things like zoos or museums. Nothing fancy like a Michelin star restaurant. If he takes you somewhere that fancy, it has to be for something really special.

“What do you mean you don’t want to wear the safari outfits to the zoo? I thought it was cute.”

Junseo

Junseo would love to be the one getting spoiled. Yes, he gets you nice things and pays attention to details but he’ll love getting notes and tiny gifts from you. I think he’d love exchanging selfies on days you won’t get to see one another so he can still compliment you on what you look like. He likes being detailed with compliments, commenting on your specific outfit, makeup, or hair. And he’d love for you to do the same. Nothing can convince me he doesn’t live for your praise. But more than that, he lives for your smile.

i have actually not rly thought about collaborations mostly cuz everyones so separate in my mind but uh i know exactly who id want: jbj95 members kenta and sanggyun, wei's donghan, and mbitious' taehyun. throw hyunbin in there somewhere too LOL and ofc they’d do jbj’s my flower :)

7. create your ideal guest list for a jackson wang party

HAHA oh we gotta start this list with seungkwan and hoshi of course, i think doing a drinking game would be fun with the exid members. no onf members tho cuz they dont. seem like partiers hahaha. except mk but im not even sure abt that. anyway heres a few others: pentagon's shinwon, wei's donghan & seokhwa, nct's johnny & mark, chuu, and any mix/match of twice members. just so i can see them interact with seungkwan and hoshi.

8. create an idol group with some of your mutuals, including positions and a group name!

oh BOYYYY i have lots of mutuals that come to mind but mainly id like to make a group full of adults (for. obvious reasons) and i also avoided mutuals that i knew would never want the attention lmao anyway. introducing the kpop group that can actually rap and gives homage to the history of rap with no cultural appropriation <3

@awek-s -- main rapper, dancer, and face of the group

@changbeens -- also main rapper, dancer, and lyricist

@hwichanis -- leader, main vocal, and choreographer despite not being a dancer

@pinkhyojin -- main dancer, vocal, and happy virus

@hoshifromkpop -- can do all 3 (sing, rap, dance) and is also in charge of style in the group

@seoluna -- also main vocal, dancer, and producer of the songs

this group is a mix of the nicest people ive ever met with people that arent afraid to speak their mind, which needs to be done in the industry tbh. you all dont take any shit but the kindness/hard honesty is evened out and no one comes across bitchy or anything, which is rly nice!

oh this one is easy, except its a tie between two: one is call your name by jbj mostly cuz every time i hear it i can see the mv and taehyun crying... the second one is starlight by enoi bc that song is so beautiful but it also drives me crazy in a good way

donghan kisses his members so he has no qualms about kissing you in front of them either.

junseo gets a little shy about it, but it’s worth a little bit of blushing to kiss you, especially if you’re leaving and he’s saying goodbye. the alternative of letting you leave without a goodbye kiss is much worse. (he’s also very proud to have you so like even if he gets embarrassed sometimes, he likes to show you off.)

daehyeon acts like it’s cringe when anyone else does it, but he will kiss you in front of his members to “assert dominance.” if anyone has a problem, he’ll pull out the leader card all too happily. it’s much more about flexing on the others, i fear. (unless he’s moody that day then it’s because he’s pouty and the only thing that can make him feel better is a kiss from you, duh.)

yongha will not often initiate a kiss with you in front of his members, but he won’t deny you if you kiss him. he gets SO pink cheeked about it every time, but his tummy is all full of butterflies and it’s all he thinks about for the rest of the day.

yohan usually doesn’t kiss you in front of the members unless he’s just not being mindful at the minute. sometimes he’ll do it on accident because he’s not thinking, but it doesn’t really bother him. he’s just like “oh, oops” and moves on. i don’t think it’s a conscious choice so much as it is just something he doesn’t think to do in front of other people.

seokhwa just would rather not kiss you in front of his members. it’s more about preserving the preciousness between you two than being embarrassed, because he’s not. he will sometimes act like he’s “above” it, but he’s just as easy to pout if you don’t kiss him goodbye because how could you not kiss him goodbye?

how i got into them: waited my whole life for donghan to come back + yongha was one of my wondernine biases + yohan was a guy that i did . like . in x1. n then oui ent was like hey :D we have a group now :D n i was like what. nd i went through the 5 stages of grief re:donghan's solo career. but i was like at least he's gonna do. Something. i guess. n then i saw that an ex-rainz guy was in the lineup too nd like i didn't know rainz' members on a like face-to-name basis but i did Like Rainz as a group (n i didn't even know hyeon was in oui??) . n turns out that i had heard his solo back in the day also. so i basically knew everyone except seokhwa (although? i prob knew he was brina's guy?). so i was vvvvvvvvv excited esp since i saw hui???? was making their title?!?! . nd so i set myself up bc i absolutely hated twilight . nd then a While. a While. after that. i somehow ended up listening to their mini n i was like wait ure telling me that all this time they had literally masterpieces like this hidden on this album?? the only bad song on there is twilight??? so i didnt give up on them after all n look at me now

which member would be my best friend: seokhwa or yohan!!!! or junseo but that's a bad idea

something i associate with them: pet influencers. donghan w labradors/golden retrievers. yohan w heelys, of course... RO!!!!!!! hyeon w rain in the summertime (the scent, the sound but also the overall. comfort. feeling). seokhwa w a few gg songs but they're [redacted] for now to avoid possible spoilers.

Build Up, Ep 2-3: The Tier Ranking

Welcome back to my Build Up Recaps! I'm glad you're here. In the previous post, I talked a bit about my final thoughts for the Pre4 mission. In the one, we'll finally transition from episode 2 to episode 3 and talk about the crazy Tier Ranking ceremony. Let's do it!

Some amount of time has passed since the 10 performances, and the boys have gathered in the stage area. Solar is now leading them, and though they’re still wearing the same clothes, she’s changed into a different outfit. She tells them, “As you can see, the space has been divided into three areas" -- T for Top, M for Mid, and L for Low.

Solar announces that now, the top tier member in each team must choose one person from their team to be the low tier. The guys are like, now it’ll be like a real survival show. Yeo One says, “This will be fun.” Seunghun from CIX is like, “that’s the fun of survival.” Is it, though? Is it?

Jay says, “I have to send someone to the low tier. I have no choice.”

He’s heartbroken about it.

In fact, Jay is first. He was in team If You. Who will he pick from his team?

Jay apologizes and picks Geonu. If I were pushed to pick a low tier in this group, I’d have to pick Geonu too, just because the others did better, and because he was a tiny bit pitchy here and there. But I still think he has a sweet, nice voice and I’ve become a Just B fan!

I think Bain, who is in Just B with Geonu, takes it harder than Geonu does.

Geonu must have been expecting it, but he’s not happy about it. And he’s not about to try to make Jay feel better about it, either. Can’t blame him.

“Is someone touching me? Because I don’t feel anything.” -- Geonu, probably

He’s just like, ok, so I go to Section L?

Jay says, “It gave me a heavy heart, but he exaggerated too much on stage. That’s why I chose him.” Jay is basically just repeating what the judges said, and I think that’s fair, too. If I were put in that position, I’d just try to echo what the judges said and decide based on that.

They move to their respective areas, and Geonu says, well, I’ll just have to prove myself.

Wumuti, off camera, is already feeling sad about having to pick someone from his team. Honestly, I’d rather lose something like this if it meant not having to pick a low tier person.

Next up is team “Don’t Go.”

Top tier was Lee Donghun, but that whole team did great. I think it was actually my favorite team of the night, despite the fact that it was a cheezy ballad. Everyone is like, oh no, how do you pick a low tier from this?

I think you have to give it to Hyukjin for not get any votes from the judges. Eunkwang and Jaehwan voted for Neon, and Wendy voted for Park Jeup, so I think it’s kind of fair to put Hyukjin in the low tier, even though he also did a great job.

The subtitles aren’t working properly, but the best I can gather is that in his interview, Donghun is saying that everyone in his team did well, and it doesn’t make sense to feel sad or sorry after such a good performance. He says “I nominate Hyukjin without much hesitation.” Ouch!

Huykjin is like, I’m sad, but I’ll be ok. No worries!

Oh god, they make them wear a scarlet letter L? Thanks, sadists. Thadists.

Donghun walks Hyukjin over to his spot, saying, “You know my heart, right? You know I love you, right?” And Hyukjin’s like, “Well, but, do I really know that?”

I’m not sure that Hyukjin’s too excited about that thumbs up, Donghun.

Next up, Wumuti has to pick from his Ditto teammates.

For me, I think I would have picked Seokhwa, since I found his performance the weakest in terms of technique (despite how pretty his voice is, and how sweet he seems to be as a human being). But as a reminder, Solar and Jaehwan voted for Seokhwa as top tier, so I don’t think it would be smart to pick him as the low tier.

Wumuti says his choice, and everyone reacts as if shocked, but MNET is MNET-ing and they’re not telling us. That’s for the next episode! But luckily, I’m way behind and episode three is definitely already out.

First, we’re given the interim status of the performers. The current ranking as of the end of episode 2 (top tiers in bold, Boys Planet members starred*)

Notably, all four members of If You and all four members of Don’t Go are all in the top 20. In other words, people who were shown in episode 1 are more likely to be closer to the top of the voting. Also, members of more popular groups and all three Boys Planet members are in the top 20, if you didn’t already notice that!

Ok, continuing in episode 3…

We’re reminded of what we’ve seen so far, including our ten top tier members…

Top row: Jay, Seunghun, Donghun, Kim Sungjung, WumutiBottom row: Park Joohee, Lee Minwook, Choi Haram, Choi Suhwan, Lim Sanghyun

… and then jump in with Seunghun, top tier from his group, choosing the low tier.

LTR: Jang Intae, Hong Sungwon, Bain, Kim Seunghun

Bain is worried about himself as well as his Just B teammate Geonu. “Gwaenchana,” he says to Geonu. “It’s ok.” I think he’s trying to convince himself of that, too.

He interviews, “I struggled to get it together. I thought he’d choose me.” After all, Bain is the only one who got bad feedback, with the judges saying that his singing style wasn’t suitable for the song. I remind you again to check out his cover of Driver’s License!

Seunghun starts off by saying that “suitability for the song was the core of my criteria.” But he’s chosen not Bain but Sungwon, which really shocks everyone.

Intae: “Oh, thank GOD it wasn’t me.” -- probably Sungwon: “Oh my god… how can it be me?” -- probably Bain: “Holy SHIT! It’s not me!” -- probably

Sungwon interviews, “I didn’t know he would pick me. It felt terrible. I felt naked. I felt like I was in my undies in this studio.” Aww! But you’re in a nice cozy sweater, Sungwon!

Seunghun explains that since Sungwon used to sing for musicals, and their song was a popular ballad, Sungwon’s vocals felt distant from the song. Seunghun bows low and apologizes, and Sungwon tries to smile and tries to take it in stride, but it’s hard.

“I’ll turn low into legend,” he says, and I gotta say, I have a soft spot for Sungwon, you guys. Ever since Desperado, I’ve liked his voice a lot. I think he’s cute and sweet and you can’t argue with the fashion.

I’m not sure who I would have picked from this team. You guys know I love Bain, but I don’t think he sounded exceptionally good in this performance, and he got the worst feedback from the judges, so maybe I would have picked him.

Then it’s back to Wumuti, choosing a Ditto teammate. “I had only one criteria,” Wumuti says. “How much did he enjoy the stage and show his charms. I felt like one teammate didn’t fully show what he’s good at.”

Woong interviews “It must be me, I didn’t show much here.” We’re reminded that he got bad feedback, but meanwhile the flashback reminds us how gruffly pretty Woong’s voice is, tempo issues aside.

True to Woong’s prediction, in fact, Wumuti does pick him.

“Wait, did I hear that right?” -- Seokhwa, probably

“My fate has come upon me. There is no escaping doom. MNET, why hast thou forsaken thy most handsome and famous son?” -- Woong, probably

“This is messed up, man, but at least I’m not part of it.” -- Soomin, probably

Wumuti doesn’t try to hug Woong or beg forgiveness -- he just sort of walks away. Honestly, I think that’s best. Apologize later, maybe, when time has passed and you have some way to try to make it up to them. Buy them some chicken, or something.

Woong interviews, “I was really sad. It really was me…. Top tiers go up while low tiers go down. I felt embarrassed. Should I quit?” He laughs nervously.

Next is Park Joohee from team Tomboy, who, without a lot of build up…

… chooses Gwangseok. The same guy who came in first in the Vocal Check is now low tier?!?

Everyone is pretty shocked, including Gwangseok himself, but I think it’s kind of reasonable, given that the other three team members each got at least one vote from the judges. Also, I thought that, as pretty and textured as Gwangseok’s voice is, his lack of training kind of showed in his performance. Joohee says, “He’s really good, but I thought he could have done better this time around.”

Gwangseok takes it in stride, promising to do better next time. God, this show is like choosing your favorite chocolate from a box of delicious chocolates, isn’t it? There’s no bad choices, just some that you like more than others.

As Gwangseok and Joohee walk to their respective tiers, you can clearly see that Kim Sungjung, our leaping lizard musical actor, and Lee Minwook from Newkidd are already in their spots.

What is the point of showing this stuff out of order, MNET? Do you guys just throw the footage on the floor and roll around in it?

So then we actually see Kim Sungjung and Lee Minwook make their choices. The show goes really fast over this.

Seongjeong from “Shall I..?” has to choose among (left to right, top row): Yeo One from Pentagon, Yoon In Hwan, and Kim Seohyung. Minwook from “Something Like That” has to choose among (left to right, bottom row): Taehwan from Vanner, Kwon Euibin, and Ma Jaekyung.

For the Shall I…? team, I think there’s only one choice: Seohyung. That’s not because I necessarily think he did the worst job; it’s just because everyone else got at least one vote from a judge. And that’s exactly who Seongjeong chooses, possibly for that reason.

For the Something Like That team, it’s tough to pick one. I really liked all four vocal performances on this one, as much as I hate the song itself. As I said in my recap, “All four of them are great, and Jaekyung and Minwook are excellent, but Taehwan is superb.” So I guess that means that poor Euibin would have gotten my vote as lowest tier. However, the judges gave at least one vote to everyone but Jaekyung, so I guess Jaekyung is a natural choice for Minwook to make and he does.

Both Jaekyung and Seohyung vow to bounce back.

Ok, this next bit is weird. Choi Haram has to pick a low tier member of team Breath.

LTR: Jeong Inseong from KNK, Lee Hwanhee from Up10tion, Lim Junhyeok (former Day6), Choi Haram

As you might remember, Junhyeok is a keyboardist and a singer-songwriter, and Haram is a classically trained pianist, so between the two of them, they derived all the harmonies for their team’s arrangement. I bet that Junhyeok and Haram spent a lot of time together in the process and got to be friendly. So, it might have been a bit of a surprise that Haram would choose Junhyeok-hyun as the low tier member.

But then we find out that Junyheok told him to pick him -- and is still mad that he did! WTF?

Junhyeok interviews, “From my perspective no one deserved to go low tier and Haram was really perplexed so I told him to send me." We see him saying "Send me, just send me." But apparently, Junyheok didn't think he’d really do it. "I was actually devastated," he interviews.

This is so silly -- I was all ready to give Junyheok all my respect for falling on his sword to help his hoobae. But I guess I have to respect his honesty!

Poor Haram probably would have picked him anyway, noting that the judges didn't give Junyheok the best feedback.

"Thank goodness we're so good looking." -- Hwanhee, probably.

Next, we very briefly see Delcocamie’s Choi Suhwan, in his too-short jacket, choosing RBW trainee Ji Yeonwoo as low tier. That’s extremely fair, since the poor kid forgot the words!

Then from team Beautiful, top tier Lim Sanghyun with his soft gruff voice chooses Kim Minseo as low tier. Again, a fair choice, since everyone else on the team got at least one vote from the judges.

Thus, the various tiers are established.

WEi when you fall asleep on another member

Daehyeon:

He sees no harm in it;

You’re tired and he would never be upset by you falling asleep on junseo’s shoulder;

He will however carry you very gently to his bed;

His priority is your comfort and he for sure doesn’t want you waking up with back pain or a sore neck;

And if you wake up during the process and ask him to nap with you or stay, unless he’s really busy he for sure will;

Of course the request is gonna make him feel so warm and fuzy, the will to kiss you all over your face is getting hard to control;

He wished you could know just how adorable you are.

Donghan:

You were working on the living room floor while they were watching TV;

But your all nighters were definetly catching up to you so you decided to close your laptop and lean your back against the bunkbed;

One second you saw the TV screen the next one you were fast asleep;

Seokhwa noticed your head on his shoulder and he tapped Donghan’s arm;

Donghan couldnt help but smile to himself, he had told you to take the day off to rest but you’re as stubborn as it gets;

He got up placing his cold hand on your face;

You opened your eyes due to the temperature change and he asked;

“do you want to sleep in my bed?”

You of course said yes as long as he stayed with you;

Yongha:

He had been out for the day due to personal schedules so you were left alone with the rest of the guys;

There was no concerns about that he knew you can handle them pretty well and if you need something the others would gladly help;

When he opened the door he saw everyone in the living room having some snacks;

He also saw you half asleep on yohan’s shoulder;

His heart ached a little, not because of jealousy but because he wished he could’ve been there to take care of you;

But now that he’s here will make sure to do just that so he sat himself next to you and carefully moved your head to his shoulder;

He grabbed your hand as well caressing it too.

Yohan:

It was dinner time so yohan was busy in the kitchen preparing dinner along with Donghan;

Daehyeon was setting the plates and junseo and seokhwa were changing clothes;

Everyone was a wreck, packed day enough said;

So much so you and yongha knocked out leaning on each other, mouth open and everything;

When Junseo and Seokhwa came back to the living room they couldn’t help but laugh and tease a little;

All that commotion made yohan turn around and he actually found it very endearing;

Obviously he was gonna tease you both about this but he can’t lie that his heart skipped a few beats he just loves you so much.

Seokhwa:

Seokhwa invited you over since he couldnt sleep and tomorrow they had a day off;

You didn’t want to tell him you were tired because truth be told, you wanted to go and have a little fun with your friends;

All was going well but you fell sleep mid board game which is unusual;

Donghan couldn’t sto giggling he was scared of making a bigger move and waking you up;

Of course seokhwa being seokhwa he just had to take a picture and he did, multiple actually;

After a small photoshoot he slightly shook you to wake you up;

You woke up a little startled and after realising everyone was looking at you, you got a little embarassed;

Seokhwa suggested for you to sleep in his bed while they finised the game and you galdy took his offer.

Junseo:

You were waiting on Junseo with Daehyeon;

Daehyeon was on his computer and you were on your phone, you were all to go out for a late night snack but you were battleling with sleep;

Hunger and tiredness which one will win;

Once Junseo was fully ready sleep had by far won and he felt so bad he didn’t want to wake you up but he also knew if you woke up again you’d be just as hungry;

So there was only one thing to do, leave you sound asleep since you were already on his bed but still get you food;

He knew what you were craving so he made a mental note to get you exactly that;

And by some miracle once they came back home you had just woken up;

You were gonna ask why he didn’t wake you but then he showed you the Mc Donald’s bags;

Junseo didn’t want you eating alone either so they just brough the food home and ate with you;

He also said “next time don’t fall asleep on Daehyeon hyung my pillows are more comfortable” while smilling.

Daehyeon noticed you kept looking at your phone and smiling, your fingers flying across the keyboard to respond to someone. He couldn’t help but be a bit paranoid. Were you talking to someone else? After a few hours of giving you the silent treatment and you not seeming to notice, he’d peer over your shoulder to see you’d actually been posting to a secret fan account you had for him, raving to RUi about the latest comeback. “Is this what you’ve been doing all day?” He laughed in sweet relief, feeling dumb for internalizing his jealousy all day when a quick question would have cleared that up in seconds. “Baby, I thought you were talking to another guy.”

“Why on earth would I do that?” You scrunched your nose.

“Dunno. Maybe you got tired of me.”

“Never.” You turned your head to give him a quick kiss.

“Promise you’ll only post about me?”

Donghan

Donghan didn’t like that you were starting in a drama as a main love interest. Whenever you watched the show together and the romantic scenes came up or if you’re co-star so much as looked at you, his grip on your hand would tighten. When you looked at him, his jaw would be clenched and his eyes filled with hurt. “Baby?” You tilted your head, trying to get his attention. He only squeezed tighter when you kissed your co-star. “Babe.” You laughed, realizing why he was jealous. “Look at me.” As soon as he did, you gave him a kiss, lingering longer than usual to remind him that he was the only one for you.

“Maybe I should start acting and try to get casted as your love-interest. Those lips are mine.”

Yongha

Yongha had been awfully clingy since you started your new job. Whenever you were both in the same place at the same time, he was clinging to your arm, kissing your hand or cheek and placing his hands in your pockets to tug you closer whenever you wandered out of arm’s reach.

“Baby.” You laughed as he tugged you back against his side. “Don’t get me wrong, I like the affection. But why are you being so needy?” You cupped his cheeks and met his gaze.

“Your boss gets all your time lately. At least I can get something he can’t.” He grinned triumphantly. At your quizzical brow, he continued, “Your love.”

Yohan

Yohan was usually pretty confident in your relationship but he’d brought you along to a celebrity party for the first time and something about the dazzled look in your eyes as you scanned the crowd made him insecure. “Yeah, these parties are pretty cool, huh?” He looked you over, biting his tongue to allow a pause for you to answer.

“Yeah. So many idols I’ve only dreamt of meeting.” Your eyes lingered CIX’s Jinyoung, starry with awe.

“Hey.” He grabbed your chin and turned your head to look at him. “I’m better than those other guys. Don’t look at anyone else like that.”

Seokhwa

Seokhwa couldn’t help it. He kept staring at you fluffed Yongha’s hair, your lips dabbing gloss onto his lips. He knew it was your job but he thought you could maybe do it without being so close to his members all the time. He grabbed your wrist suddenly and tugged you out into the hall. “What are you doing?” He hissed. “Why do you keep touching him and smiling like that?”

“Baby, I’m just doing my job.” You rolled your eyes. “

“We’ll, at least stop smiling at him so much.” He frowned. “From now on, only smile at me.”

“Don’t be ridiculous. I’m friends with all the members. I practically live at the dorms lately.” You crossed your arms. “Do you want me to scowl at them all the time?”

“We’ll, it’d make me feel better.”

Junseo

“Why can’t I dance with Y/N?” Junseo pouted. “We have better chemistry.”

“We’re a better height match.” Seokhwa shrugged. “It’s not about chemistry for this kind of dance.”

“Well, then stop touching them so much.” Junseo huffed, rubbing the back of his neck. “It’s unnecessary.”

“It’s a partner dance.” Seokhwa raised a brow. “Are you okay?”

“Fine.” He grumbled, making you realize just how bothered he was getting.

“You’re jealous.” You teased. His cheeks reddened in response and he looked down at his feet. “Oh my god, you are.” You laughed and walked up to him, kissing his cheek. “Do you wanna choreograph our own dance at home? I’ll let you lift me.”

“You don’t let anyone lift you.”

“Just for you, babe.” You smiled gently. “I’ll make an exception just for you.”

“Well, now I feel special.”
