The ‘illusory truth effect’ refers the tendency to believe any information to be correct/accurate after repeated exposure. It’s the result of a flaw in human cognitive processing that goes like this… 

When we’re repeatedly exposed to the same information (even if it’s meaningless, false or we’re unaware that we’ve seen it before), it gradually becomes easier for our brains to process. Repeated exposure to a stimulus increases our ‘processing fluency,’ meaning our brain can process the stimulus more efficiently. This is referred to ‘familiarity’ & the human brain LOVES familiarity. The less effort we have to consciously expend to process something, the more positively we will feel about that thing. We’re even more likely to accept simple, easy to understand concepts as “more true” than complex, nuanced concepts. 

The ‘mere exposure effect’ describes the human tendency to feel more positively about things we’ve encountered before (even if only briefly or unconsciously). Again: we prefer what is already familiar to us! This effect tends to be strongest concerning statements about subjects in which we fancy ourselves knowledgable. The irony is that studies show participants with the lowest scores & worst performances, in any subject matter, tend to be the most egregious over estimators of their own abilities/comprehension. Not having a skill or understanding means you’re unable to recognize said lack. 

So (follow me here) those of us who know THE LEAST about a subject will think we know THE MOST, because we don’t even know enough to recognize the scope of our ignorance & therefore, because they mistake ourselves as experts on said subject, we’re most vulnerable to both the mere exposure & illusory truth effect, because we’ll swallow repeated statements about said subject (even if we’re falsehoods) as correct/accurate… all because it feels cozy, familiar & self-affirming. Let that soak in for a moment.

Mere exposure effect

The mere-exposure effect is a psychological phenomenon by which people tend to develop a preference for things merely because they are familiar with them.

Which, theoretically speaking, means 3 interesting things when it comes to physical attractiveness:

The invention of the mirror was the tipping point in the history of humankind, being the start of a self-appreciation of physical appearances.

We likely think we look more attractive than other people think we do. 

The more you see a person, the more attractive you think he/she is.

But, 

The mirror was actually heavily demonized across cultures when it was first invented. From the belief that it was a portal to another world, to seeing spirits/ demons in it, to plenty of superstitions revolving around that innocent piece of glass (I'm sure you would've heard of the one where breaking a mirror gives you "bad luck"). So instead of the mirror as a vanity tool to celebrating one's beauty, people were actually afraid or skeptical of seeing themselves. And this means one thing: the mere exposure effect is definitely a modern concept, not a universal, timeless rule. Oh yes but you might want to watch this video about people preferring their mirror image over how they look IRL.

Unfortunately people aplenty suffer from low esteem issues and inferiority complexes etc. due to self-perceived levels of physical attractiveness. Of course this is not sufficient reason to deny #2 completely; adapting from Newton's third law, for every force there is an opposing force (minus the equal part cos nothing in reality is split 50-50. None of the abstract things I'm interested in anyway). Thus with a (hypothetically speaking) rise in self-perceptions of beauty, there will be other reasons for the opposite too. You could blame intrasexual competition for mates, mass media, whatever. Fact is, there are people who find themselves way less attractive than others. 

While I don't believe in "love at first sight", some people clearly do (just watch some Thai rom-coms, or Big Fish). Or perhaps you could argue that these subjects of "love at first sight" actually are attractive because they resemble someone the loverboy/girl knows (maybe his/her parents even. Bring in that oedipus complex and all, woohoo). Anyhow, claim #3 is too contentious; I'd need to explore that thought a bit more.
