Here are seven snippets from the short story version of StormWatcher:
1. Long before my time, people would sit around their storm lamps with cards and blankets, tucked away in their closets and bathrooms and underneath their stairs. It was all watches and warnings, all ghost stories and fun. It was all a game.
It was a diluted fear they turned into entertainment.
2. “How far away-”
“At least 5 miles,” I interrupt. “Nothing to worry about. It’ll pass.”
“But what if-”
“It’ll pass,” I repeat.
Merieh’s hand sweats in mine, but I won’t pull away. A scaredy-cat she might be, but my big sister was always there for me. Though I don’t remember the storms before we moved, I can recall her face peering over mine, arms wrapped protectively around me. I’m determined to repay the favor in whatever way possible.
3. Mam always says I have a habit for not biting my tongue. I think she just dislikes that I’ve turned out more like her instead of Merieh and Mom.
4. Her eyes flash towards me, reflecting the lightning. Dark hair collects the raindrops as she pulls out from under it. Even her skin reflects the elements. She has that sun-kissed look that no one in my generation has ever seen up close. However, it’s her movements that tie it all together. She moves the way the wind blows in a front, which is however suits her. A tornado could rip through the school, but this woman would still be standing.
5. “No, Denia!”
Merieh lets out a little sob, her fork dropping. I watch Mam cover her mouth in sadness, then her face goes back to vacant and distant.
“No. No, Kib.”
It’s been so long since I’ve heard that name. Mam never speaks it. Merieh always just calls her Mom. Only a few neighbors ever mention her by name. Neighbors including Lisbet Hark.
Denia was my mom.
Mam thinks I’m going to turn out like my mom.
Dead.
6. Merieh was distraught, tugging on my arm as I emerged. “No. Kib, you can’t go!”
I looked at my big sister and I thought about how much I was going to miss her. But I wasn’t going to miss this. Not counting the seconds for her, not getting pulled out of the rain, not having to face her judgmental eyes at every turn. “I have to.”
7. Years ago, I used to stand out in the rain, face up to the sky, dreaming of a day where I could escape storm shelters and being scared of lightning and of Mam’s talk of the Eye. But I had it all wrong.
Somewhere deep inside of me, I have always known the truth.

No pressure tagging: @eli-writes-sometimes @lesbiandirtycomputer @writingpotato07 @danervinauthor @aestatismors @hrmkingizzy @raiphend @all-my-dreams-and-ambitions @unhinged-corvid @btranscrolls @jaimistoryteller @midnight-and-his-melodiverse @ryns-ramblings @ashirisu & my open tag!
Because I've done this previously, I'm going onto another character. I've tagged some new people to mix it up a little, but feel free to ignore this or message me to not be tagged again. Also, you can do this for yourself or a character, if you'd like. Onto Merieh Gree from StormWatcher. No spoilers, but I've hidden it under the cut for length's sake.
1. Are you named after anyone?
One of my parents' scientific idols: Dr. Inez Merieh.
2. When was the last time you cried?
A few days ago. Had a bad dream.
3. Do you have kids?
No.
4. Do you use sarcasm?
Not really. I'm not good at hearing it either.
5. What's the first thing you notice about people?
Whether I trust them or not. Kib thinks it's ridiculous, but I'm usually right about things like that.
6. What's your eye color?
Blue.
7. Scary movies or happy endings?
Definitely happy endings. The world is scary enough.
8. Any special talents?
Kib likes to tell me I'm extraordinarily talented at handling situations. I think that's sarcasm though.
9. Where were you born?
Aghland, Kentucky.
10. What are your hobbies?
Um. I've gone through several-- all attempts to manage stress. Last few have been checkers, knitting, and obsessive cleaning.
11. Have you any pets?
No. Mom had a cat when I was little, but she got sick when we moved and never got better.
12. What sports do you play/have played?
Um, not really any sports to play.
13. How tall are you?
5'4.
14. Favorite subject in school?
The few years of actual school I got, English was always my favorite.
15. Dream job?
I don't know. When I was little, I wanted to be a reporter, but there's not really any of those left that aren't connected to StormWatcher. And I don't really... want to be connected to them, I guess.

Using StormWatcher (more under the cut):
Lisbet Hark: And I’d love to be sorry for that, but we all know I’ve done much, much worse.
Kib: Oh, so when crows remember people who wronged them and hold grudges, its “intelligent” and “really cool”.
Kib: But when I do it, I’m “petty” and “need to let it go”.
Merieh: I don’t think the therapist is supposed to say ‘wow’ that many times during their first session with a client, but here we are.
Daran: So what do you have planned for the future?
Merieh: Lunch.
Daran: No, like long term.
Mam: When I first met you, I did not like you.
Merieh: Oh...um, dinner?
Lisbet Hark: I'm aware of that.
Mam: But then you and I had some time together.
Lisbet Hark: Uh-huh?
Mam: So I’m the only one around here who can clean up, huh? You can't even lift a finger?
Mam: It did not get better.
Daran: *lying down and crying*
Kib: Do I get to pick the finger?
Daran: And what do I get out of this?
Kib: There, there. Why don’t you take some time off to not be around me while you’re like this?
Kib: I will give you a dollar.
Daran: What do you think I am? A chump? I would never do it for a dollar!
Kib: How bout two dollars?
Merieh: Kib won’t come out of their room!
Daran: You got yourself a deal.
Daran: Just tell them I said something.
Merieh: Like what?
Daran: Anything factually incorrect.
Merieh, shrugging: If you say so.
Kib: I told Daran that their ears turn red when they lie.
Kib, arriving moments later: Did you just say the sun is a PLANET?
Merieh: Do they?
Kib: No.
Merieh: Then why did you tell them that?
Kib: Because I can do this.
Kib: Hey Daran! Do you love us?
Merieh: You are irrationally angry 365 days a year.
Daran, with their hands over their ears: No.
Kib: Well, that’s just your personal opinion, I don’t have anger issues. Do you guys think I have anger issues?
Mam: I haven't slept in seventy-three hours.
Mam: Well, I wouldn’t really call it an issue. An issue is something you can fix.
Merieh: Eighty. Democratically elected leader of insomnia.
Kib: Bitch, it's been ninety for me. I'm going for an even one hundred.
Daran: You guys are fucking terrifying.

Hello and happy blorbo blursday :D
What would your characters do if they received a love confession? (from someone they don't like in return, from someone they DO, or both!)
Hey, Serena! Thanks for the ask, love!
Go for StormWatcher characters:
Kib: Hm? Were you... *turns around to check for another person* *points to herself* Me? Yeah, no. Bu-bye.
Merieh: Oh... *tucks hair behind ear* That's... *awkward high-pitched laugh* Funny, you're funny. And sweet. I think you're sweet... Unless... *absolutely heartbreaking expression* Wait was that a joke? Oh, that-- Wasn't a joke? Wait, you really like me? LOVE me? *soft smile and her actual laugh* Oh.
Daran: *blinks for a solid minute processing* Let me get this straight... YOU like ME? For real? How could you even see me, I mean Merieh is RIGHT THERE? ... Not that I was like, looking at her or anything. *more blinking* I'll be right back.
So in other words: awkward, awkward, & awkward in no particular order.

Right back at ya with STS!
Two polar opposite OCs of yours are at a moderately fancy restraunt. The meal was enjoyed without any major issues. That is until the bill comes. For the sake of narrative both have independently decided they would pay the bill in full, wanting it to be a suprise they have not told the other party. How would these two work out who fronts the bill?
Hey, love! Thanks for the ask!
Decided to mash some characters from different stories together:
Merieh from StormWatcher
&
Charley from Four Kinds of Falling
They shouldn't get on this well.
Merieh's too anxious for most people, her brain running about three leagues ahead of her current position. And it's not that she's UN-social, but her life's pretty much lived between her antisocial sister and her adaptably content boyfriend.
Charley, on the other hand, would definitely describe himself as unsocial. There's a grand total of three people he likes. Everyone else has always let him down. Thus, he had really low standards for the evening.
But they get on well. Not spectacularly, mind you. They talk about what they like and where they live. Mention the important people in their lives. Make nice small talk. It's not uncomfortable. It's nice.
Merieh starts digging through her purse first.
They've just finished their little desserts when Charley notices the rummaging. "Looking for something?"
"Just my wallet."
"Oh." Charley's own hand stills on his pocket. "Why?"
Merieh's face goes pink as she finally pulls out her little wallet. "Well, I didn't want to say anything, but I'm paying for us tonight. My treat."
"Do you think I'm poor or something?"
Maybe someone should've warned her. Money's one of the things Charley is incredibly sensitive about. And she worries easy. "No! My goodness, of course not! I just have some saved up and I thought-"
Charley's already aggressively pressing his credit card down on the table. "You thought wrong! I picked this restaurant and I asked you here and I'm paying."
"I don't think that's quite fair."
"That's how you're supposed to do it."
Merieh flushes deeper, this time with a little annoyance seeping in. "If we were on a date, perhaps. But we're not."
"I already made the decision."
"I want to pay."
"I don't want you to."
For a moment, Merieh considers backing down. She thinks about sinking into her seat and putting her wallet back in her purse and handing Mam the money she was so proud to be able to spend for herself.
Then she hears Kib berating her in her head. She hears Daran asking for her opinions.
"I don't appreciate you brushing me aside."
Charley stiffens. It seems he's made her upset.
"You are allowed to wish to pay, but so am I. I was really excited to go out with a friend tonight and have the money to spend on me and them. It's rude of you to ignore that."
Charley's started shaking a little. "Oh." His voice is softer. "I'm sorry."
Merieh notices and reaches out a hand to take his. "Let's pay half each then. A compromise."
"A compromise?"
"Sometimes you have to make them. They're worth it if you like the person they're for."

Happy Storyteller Saturday! I hope you’re having a good weekend😊
My question this week is a silly one: One of your characters is changed into an animal on the spot.
Who is it?
What animal?
How do the others react?
What would be the most inconvenient moment for it to happen?

Hey, Sam! Thanks for the ask, love!
Oooh, this IS a fun, silly one! I love it!
Okay, so it's super cliche... but:
Kib turns into a cat. Specifically, an angry tabby kitten with vocals for days. It definitely happens when she's bickering with Daran. Just-- BOOM! kitten-- in the middle of an argument.
Daran tries to scoop her up and she violently blazes her way up his arms in a state of panic until they're both staring at each other on the ground. Daran's bleeding and Kib the Kitten looks like a feral streetcat. Also, the extra natural electricity in the air makes it so her hair permanently stands straight up.
Daran makes another grab and Kib runs straight out into the rain. Which, human Kib loves. Kitten Kib not so much.
Kib lets her soggy kitten self be grabbed and carried home where Daran just holds her out to Merieh saying, "Found your sister."
Then Merieh proceeds to wash and dry a VERY disgruntled tabby kitten for the rest of the night. Daran giggles in the background the entire time.
(Kib may or may not wake up snuggled on Daran's chest... back in human form.)
(She may or may not threaten him if he ever speaks a word of it to anyone.)

Happy STS to you too! Would your character (or characters) ever keep a journal? How consistently? What style (formatted single or 5-year journal with a little space for each day, cheap notebook, cheap notebook but with a character on it, fancy themed notebook, leather decorated notebook, etc)? Which parts of their life would they chose to write down?
Hello, love! Thank you for the ask!
I'll break down a few StormWatcher characters:
Kib would definitely keep a journal. Clean. Probably black or grey cover. She'd keep a detailed log-- not of herself-- but of the weather.
Merieh would also probably keep a journal, something with flowers or a landscape on it. She'd write with big looping letters. About anything she wanted.
Daran would keep a journal, too. It'd be some ratty, barely bound thing, pages falling out every time he moved it. It'd be quite a bit of doodling, with silly little poems for Merieh mixed in. He's a dork.

Happy STS! I hope you’ve had a good week :D what would be a “perfect day” for your OC? (answer for as many as you like!)
Hello, lovely! Thank you for the ask! ❤️
As I'm trying to touch on StormWatcher as much as possible, I'll start with those darling characters:
Kib - It's storming. Rain and lightning and thunder. Something she can stand out in and relish. She wakes up to it, spends the day sitting on its edge, studying it, categorizing, analyzing. She convinces her sister to stand out in the rain with her.
Merieh - Mam makes her dad's pancakes for breakfast and so she wakes up to the memory of her parents. Kib and Mam don't argue for once. Later in the day, Daran comes over bringing some archived movies with him that they sit on the floor together to watch. Kib sneaks into her room at night and they lay on their backs side by side. It doesn't thunder once.
Daran - His mom lets him leave the house. Mam greets him with a smile and Merieh lets him hold her hand. Kib calls him stupid but doesn't mean it. It rains but doesn't thunder.
Mam - She's had her good days. Her daughter was alive. Her granddaughters were young and full of life. And StormWatcher hadn't yet taken everything from her.
Lisbet Hark - Her pants are pressed, perfect in their perfect creases. The facility is bright and bustling when she arrives. She takes the head of command and everyone listens to her every order. The world is her well-oiled machine.
Thank you so much for the ask, darling!

Merieh - drop of the sea, bitter, beloved (variant of Mariah, which derived from these several Hebrew meanings)
Daran - great or rip (Gaelic or Muslim)
Henna (Mam) - home-ruler or blessed (Germanic or Muslim)

Happy STS! If your OCs from one WIP were transported into a different WIP, how would they react?
Hey, love! Thanks for the ask!
I'm throwing my StormWatcher characters into The Animatronic Saga. And by throwing, I mean there's some sort of magical universe switching at play meaning they are literally THROWN in:
Kib: "Great Abbigail. Where the hell are we?"
Merieh: "Oh my god, oh my god. I think we're flying. How do we stop flying?"
Kib: "Wait, we're flying? Cool! Oh awesome! Look at all those stars! Rieh, this is freaking phenomenal!"
Merieh: "Oh, we're gonna die, we're gonna die."
Mam: "Both of you get away from there."
Daran: "Whatever we're in, it's just a vehicle."
Kib: "Don't pretend you know how to drive it."
Daran: "I don't. But it's on auto-pilot."
Kib: "Oh, you think you're so-"
Merieh: "Where are we going though?"
Daran: "I'd say we're closing in on that planet."
Mam: "That's not one of our planets."
Kib: "Well, it's closing in fast."

Happy STS!
Hypothetical scenario time: your characters are given a single potion of immortality. 1. Who would want to drink it? 2. Who would you want to drink it?
Hey, Sam! Thanks for the ask!
Pulling from StormWatcher:
1. Kib would most likely want to drink it, even if she hides her fear under a layer of intrigue.
2. I would want Merieh drink it. Being immortal would still some of her anxiety, but she'd fight tooth and nail not to drink a drop.

Happy WBW!
What kind of entertainment do your characters in you WIP have?
Hey, Stray! Thanks for the ask, love!
StormWatcher makes the most sense for this ask, so we're gonna use that world:
Set only ~50 years in the future, in terms of media and technology, their world mimics ours in a lot of ways. However, imagine all the entertainment in the world (+ about 40 more years) put through a rationed filter.
Sure, you can watch any movie ever made-- pretty much all entertainment industries died off when Hurricane Abbigail hit and the world shut down-- but you only get a movie a month and there's only a few copies of each circulating, so who knows when you'll actually get the one you want.
Luckily, Kib just wants to pitter around on StormWatcher programs-- which are endless.
Merieh, on the other hand, has switched between tactile and productive hobbies, always hoping to entertain herself that way.
No wonder all the kids are understimulated.

Happy STS! What are some weird quirks/hobbies a character of yours has? Multiple characters are fine too! :)
Hey, love! Thanks for the ask!
I'll answer with StormWatcher characters:
Kib - girl needs a hobby. She is literally obsessed with the weather (makes sense; the weather is wack in this world) so she spends all her free time taking tests on her identification and memorization skills.
Merieh - bounces around between hobbies. I imagine she's tried cooking and sewing and probably babysitting and she got really into movies for a minute, but there's not a good way to watch them consistently.
Daran - he'd say pissing off Kib is his hobby. (He likes working with kids.)
