In Washington DC, at a Metro Station, on a cold January morning in 2007, a man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, approximately 2000 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.
After about four minutes, a middle-aged man noticed that there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds, and then he hurried on to meet his schedule.
About four minutes later, the violinist received his first dollar. A woman threw money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk.
At six minutes, a young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.
At ten minutes, a three-year old boy stopped, but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head the whole time. This action was repeated by several other children, but every parent - without exception - forced their children to move on quickly.
At forty-five minutes: The musician played continuously. Only six people stopped and listened for a short while. About twenty gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32.
After one hour: He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed and no one applauded. There was no recognition at all.
No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before, Joshua Bell sold-out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100 each to sit and listen to him play the same music.
This is a true story. Joshua Bell, playing incognito in the D.C. Metro Station, was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people’s priorities.
This experiment raised several questions:
In a common-place environment, at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty?
If so, do we stop to appreciate it?
Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?
One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be this:
If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made…
How many other things are we missing as we rush through life?

back in 2020, student organizations at my university organized a rally for savitribai phule's birthday, i was tasked with writing a pamphlet for it. the issue at hand was the NRC/CAA, and i wrote a long and very involved diatribe on the nexus of laws that supported the NRC/CAA including the forest act, trans bill, and a couple of others. it was in english, with bengali and hindi "translations" which translated nothing at all.
during the rally, as i was handing the pamphlets out, one of the local shopkeepers stopped me and demanded i read it out to him because he couldn't read english, and the english section seemed much, much longer than the other parts (it was). i obliged, and spent a good forty-five minutes reading/translating the contents, and this drew a significant crowd.
two hours in, i'd written out a hindi translation with a lot of very good additions from the people who had gathered and there was a young girl writing out a bengali translation right next to me (my bengali handwriting is as atrocious as my spelling). the two translations were whisked away for further dissemination, and it dawned on me that i'd fallen so far away from the rally that i couldn't see it at all. i made a few phone calls and it turned out that they'd walked three metro stations ahead, and had begun dispersing. but i think impromptu translation sabha accomplished more than the rally could ever hope to.

pov!ran from under one roof. chapter ix. slightly suggestive.
There is a cold breeze in the air. The clouds are scattered but not angry, a little upset perhaps yet still not enough to weep. Maybe it rained somewhere nearby. Y/N is standing in front of me leaning against the frame of the seat. so was I. We were standing opposite each other waiting for our station. We were traveling in the metro on that cold afternoon, running away with our lives. I was wearing jeans, a T-shirt and a long overcoat —the usual one, the only one that I brought with me, which is not much in this weather but I wasn't feeling cold.
“Hey Ran,” Fuck don't tell me she spotted an empty seat. “We could use that. it's still forty-five minutes.” Great. Two seats. Empty. “Yep. and We definitely should,” I said before walking towards the seat but felt a tug behind me. I looked over my shoulders to see her grabbing the belt of my overcoat. cute, right? Of course, it is but my poor heart wasn't able to process all of these.
we have shared the closeness that people generally share when they're married in these past few days, spent almost every moment sitting close to each other, sleeping over each other's shoulder, taking care of each other, and had a fair amount of sex yet I still wasn't used to her emotions, her feelings for me. Maybe it's me who is a cockblock to our relationship.
I liked my lips and said, “Hey, that’s not a thing to hold.” and gave her my hand. She looked at me with that questionable expression she has when she is at the dead end of a case. Yeah, she was confused. I swallowed hard and grabbed her hand steadily walking towards the seat to occupy.
When we sat she adjusted her hand hooking around my arm. Maybe it's the cold weather but I interlaced my fingers with hers feeling her head nuzzle over my shoulders. A few more stations and then we will be there soon. Feeling a squeeze over my palms I looked at her.
And Oh dear god. She had those eyes, the eyes that I had since I was a teenager; from the day I saw her, the eyes that I yearned for so long and so hard. I looked at her squeezing her hand back, for a while, and tore away my gaze; thinking may these days never come to an end. Yeah, maybe we are running with our lives but at least we are together.

This Is Just To Say (1938) and The Red Wheelbarrow (1943) by William Carlos Williams, and In a Station of the Metro (1913) by Ezra Pound
In Episode 75, Rachel brings three short and sweet poems to the table! And of course, Griffin is super normal about it.
[Rachel finishes reading This Is Just To Say]
Griffin: It‘s really nice. Is it supposed to be like deeply sexual?
Rachel: [laughs] I don‘t think so! [...] So, William Carlos Williams grew up in Rutherford, New Jersey, and he was a doctor for more than forty years! The poem, The Red Wheelbarrow, he wrote when he was 60 years old. [...] -he used to write his little poems on little prescription pads in between clients.
Griffin: I like that! So he‘d be like "Here's 10 ccs of 'I ate your plums'". Deal with it.
This particular segment is so freaking enjoyable, and not just because of the jokes and goofs; Rachel's insight on the Imagist movement and Ezra Pound's influence on William are so interesting!
If you’re gonna listen to just one of Rachel's segments, please let it be this one, and please stick around until the end for an unexpected outro, which you can listen to over here: Gonna Need Those Plums Back, Though, from 27:50-37:00.

11 and blupjeans? :3
I think I only know like, 2 songs on here, and this is one of them, and Hadestown blupjeans is so <3 <3 <3 lol
from this prompt list!!
Barry clutches his suitcase close to him and hustles down the escalator much to the chagrin of the other people standing nicely off to the right, holding the handrail, and otherwise following all kinds of escalator protocol. He usually has no qualms with waiting patiently but this escalator is comically long and he’s in a hurry.
He glances at his wrist and shakes his head because of course he isn’t wearing a watch, he hasn’t worn a watch since his prized Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles digital watch that played the theme song every hour on the hour got lost in the community pool when he was fifteen. That watch isn’t there to help him but the all too familiar metallic hissing and clanging of the metro elucidates a rough approximation of the time.
He slides the suitcase under the turnstile while launching himself over it, ignoring the stern shouts from the security guard. It takes him an extra moment pick the suitcase off the slippery tiles but then he’s off again taking another escalator steps two at a time only to find his way blocked by a tourist family taking up both sides of the escalator. He anxiously peers over the railing to see the blue line, his blue line slowly chugging away like a sluggish caterpillar of an unnatural size. He looks up at the board only to confirm what he already knows; the next southbound blue line train won’t be coming for another forty minutes due to construction. By that time, his flight will already be leaving without him. He sets his suitcase down in defeat and slumps down to sit upon its worn leather shell. He knows it’s going to be a whole extra day before he gets to see Lup; their time together is always so fleeting as it is with both of them working and going to school full time. This long weekend was supposed to be three uninterrupted days of takeout and not leaving Lup’s apartment.
Of course he had to put in a little overtime at the library today; he’s just such a good worker and never complains! At least that’s what the older women who supervise him say.
He sits and wallows for a few minutes before standing up and going to the mostly empty bank of payphones. He fishes some change out of his pocket and holds the receiver in his hand. He takes a breath before feeding the coins into the slot and dialing Lup’s number. He holds the silvery cord as a kind of lifeline.
“Hello?”
“Lup, hey.”
“Barry! Hey,” A pause. Certainly she’s checking the clocks that hang over her kitchen sink; the blue one on the end set to Barry’s time zone. “Are you at the airport?”
“Marjorie asked me to work a little longer today.”
“Uh-huh.”
“I’m at the metro station right now.”
“Babe, your flight leaves in an hour.” She knows his metro stop is about thirty minutes from the airport. She knows just how tight a time crunch this would be.
“And the next train doesn’t come for another forty minutes.”
A quiet sigh like she’s blowing out a birthday candle for a pillbug. “So you’re going to miss that  flight.”
“I think so.” It’s non-committal. It’s overly hopeful. But he doesn’t want to just dash her hopes.
An extended pause. The only thing that lets Barry know she’s still on the line is Lup’s obnoxiously loud coffeemaker on what is certainly the second pot of the day; probably second of a few, no thanks to Barry. “I’m gonna see what I can do.”
An involuntary laugh escapes his lips; not one dusted in malice but simply steeped in surprise. “What do you mean?”
“I mean that I know a pilot who owes me a favor,” Lup says, her voice muffled in a way that makes Barry certain that there’s a pencil clenched between her teeth while she flips through her bloated and worn address book. “It might be tight but I think there might be a way that I can have your ass in my apartment before tomorrow afternoon.”
Too quickly Barry’s heart is soaring like a hubris-filled teen with waxen wings. “Really?” he breathes.
“I think so. It might be pretty late tonight.”
“How late?”
She makes a noise of displeasure. “2? Maybe 3?”
“Wait for me?”
“I will,” she says warmly. “We can have a big feast and go to bed with our stomachs hurting.”
“As long as I’m with you, nothing sounds better.”
“Call me back in about thirty minutes with what you want from Taste of Thai and I’ll hopefully have an itinerary for you.”
“Will do. Love you.”
“Love you.”

journal entry for today,
My prose reads like thousands of little ribbons unraveling so very sweetly. Every thought is something smooth; if you dipped your fingers into them, they would ripple iridescent. This morning, on my way to university, I took a look at the grass, which was vibrant green, and I marveled at each little sparkle pearling on each little strand, like beads of blue morning sunlight. This is where the divine sleeps. Holy water. I crack my fingers, I render them supple. I remember my mother saying the most beautiful hands she had seen belonged to one of her children, me; I remember my siblings’ cousin telling me I got my hands from who he believes is my grandmother. I remember, when my mother told me my father was somebody I never knew, asking her about my hands, where they come from, and she told me they came from her. My height comes from my father. My hair comes from my father. My eyes come from my father. My lack of soul comes from winter.
Judith declared that God manifested Himself through her hands, the hands of a woman.
My fingers are always so cold and stiff and trembling. They crave gentleness, warmth. They are repulsed by unwanted touch. My fingers are sacred. When I offer my hands, I offer one of the layers of my intimacy. It is a gift. I want to present my hands, give them up to be caressed and admired. A kiss on the knuckles, easing into trust. I want to hold with this subtle tenderness, this supple caress, because I want to hold much sweeter than I behold. I want someone to take notice, how the moon-kissed sunlight shines so bright on my hands and renders them translucent. How my touch is fleeting, how it carries my calligraphy, my craft, my muscle memory, and how it writes itself on its most longed for surface, a loved one’s skin, like my prose, like thousands of little ribbons unraveling. so very sweetly. How water drops from my nails after washing. This is where the divine sleeps. Holy water. Counterculture—it’s contradictory.
I went to day camp at the museum when I was thirteen, obsessed with Lana Del Rey and Marina and the Diamonds. There was a bitchy little gay boy who hated on everybody; he said of me that all he liked were my hands. An odd but still cherished backhanded compliment. From May of 2022 through June of 2023, I slept next to a lonely and miserable man to whom I offered my hands; he rejected them on account that they were cold. The temperature of his body was always so warm and welcoming, but his spirit and muscles recoiled from my touch. I stuck my hands between my thighs.
All that emits light is holy, and all that takes on a circular shape is mystical. I own forty CD’s. I especially like eating from a bowl. My favourite metro station is Peel, with all of its circular ceramics by Jean-Paul Mousseau embedded into the walls and floating floors. Witches work best in circles because women’s histories operate in cycles. Circular shapes are infinite. Women summon from them. The moon is eternal. Street lights are her daughters. Grapes are the sweetest fruits, blueberries are angels. Ladybugs are feyries, and those who carry exactly seven dots wear the burden of Mary’s sorrows. Eyes own, seize, and possess. They are simultaneously window and mirror, a paradox. A classmate of mine told me my eyes were baroque. My eyes are empty. There is only one path, and it leads to the ferris wheel.
I always watch my step, and I’ve just seen a butterfly resting on the sidewalk; I kneeled right then and there, because catching such an ephemeral creature immobile is the rarest experience. Lace fabric is a pastiche of the wings of a butterfly; it tries to replicate the delicately carved veils and their perpetual apotheosis; what it can’t emulate is the hypostasis, that of weightlessness. This butterfly, she was beautiful, showing off her wings for me and letting me take note of the purple bleeding into orange, which reminded me of myself, and of October by James Tissot, which hangs on a lilac wall at the museum. It reminded me, also, of the leaves turning copper; as she lay there, shining her brightest, iridescent, waiting for someone to step on her, she served as a memento mori. Nature morte.

They never turn the lights off in Grand Central; and they may lock the doors between 1 and 5:30 A.M., but the place never quite becomes still. If you stand outside those brass-and-glass doors on Forty-second Street and peer in, down the ramp leading into the Grand Concourse, you can see the station's quiet nightlife – a couple of transit police officers strolling past, easygoing but alert; someone from the night cleaning crew heading toward the information island in the center of the floor with a bucket and a lot of polishing cloths for all that century-old brass. Faintly, the sound of rumblings under the ground will come to you – the Metro-North trains being moved through the upper- and lower-level loops, repositioned for their starts in the morning, or tucked over by the far-side tracks to be checked by the night maintenance crew. On the hour, the massive deep gong of the giant Accurist clock facing Forty-second strikes, and the echoes chase themselves around under the great blue sky-vault and slowly fade.
