i currently live in a major west coast city over a crowded street. no one honks. i hear the traffic all day and night no one honks. when i first landed in jfk it was beautiful - an unnecessary animal chorus of endless, ceaseless, honking traffic, honks with no purpose, no direction, interested entirely in the escalation of the collective, every melody disharmoniously rising up into the skin as pulses do when someone checks you are alive. it was the only city in the world. back at my bedroom window in my west coast city that i still have a habit of considering major even though after new york i understood that no west coast cities north of california can be considered major. 10:46pm. my bedroom over my city street. someone just honked and it caused one other person to honk and a third in a quick succession. staccato, maybe forte, mezzoforte, mezzoforte. the pulse quickens, loses itself a moment, returns from the unused corpse. sometimes it’s so quiet that from my second floor window i can hear the heat blowing out of the vents inside the cars.

[MARI - 25]
Mari booted up the old PC. The Puppeteer watched, warped face sneering in the reflection of the black screen, long, stringy hair covering thin shoulders; Sunny was busy with Basil today.
Trying to ignore the creature behind her, Mari looked out the window. Perhaps her vision was getting worse, some parts of the backyard looked blank, like raindrops distorting the view outside a windowpane. She could still see the forest and sky, and figure outside. He was always there too, scarf flapping in the wind. She imagined him as her father, waiting peacefully for her to come outside and play…
Come now, Mari. You know that’s not good enough. Take a break, we can do more soon.
Mari’s fingers tapped absent-mindedly along the desk. She played out some notes… right, G4, E5, …left, C4, G4 and E4, once again,... everything played mezzoforte, she hummed quietly to herself…
Yes, this one would sound good enough for Dad. This one would be perfect…
She closed her eyes. It was like it was all really there… left, A3, C#4 and E4; G3, C#4 and E4, repeat,... right, G5, D5, no, wait, E5…
Wait.
Mari froze.
What was she doing?
No, what the fuck was she doing?
No, no, no. Absolutely not. Never again
Her mother's voice echoed in her head.
Don't hurt yourself, Mari. I told you to stop. You're burdening me and everyone else.
No, no, wait, but,
Mari slammed her hands on the edge of the desk, and again. Over and over and over and over and over. She hit them harder and harder. Over and over and over and over and over. She hit them until they turned purple and throbbed, she hit them until they went numb. Then she kept hitting.
She stopped. Her fingers were shaking, bent in odd directions. The bandages must've slipped off.
She knew it was supposed to hurt, but it didn't. She looked blankly at the shattered mechanics of her hands.
Her mother burst into the room, the door flying open. Mari hadn't heard the footsteps. “God, Mari, what did I tell you? That's the third time this month.”
Mari stood up and looked at her mother's shoes, avoiding her eyes. They were navy velvet loafers, with a small rose near the top of the shoe. Perfect mom shoes for a perfect mom.
“No, we're not going to the hospital again. They're fed up with you.” Her mother grabbed Mari's wrists, pulling them harshly. She peered at the fingers.
“Go and clean them up and bandage them. I'm sick of this. I know you miss him, but this isn't appropriate.”
Mari moved to leave, slipping past her mother, avoiding touch. As she walked toward the door, her mother sighed deeply.
“You know you're fine. Don't pretend otherwise. I'm fine and you're fine. If you weren’t fine, you would talk to me.”
Mari nodded distractedly, and busied herself in the bathroom. Puppeteer loomed in the mirror, hissing the words her mother said.
You're a burden. She's sick of you. They’re fed up with you. You're fine. You're fine. You're fine. This isn’t appropriate.
Mari tried to ignore it.

Today's compilation:
World Domination or Death, Vol. 1 1990 Alternative Rock / Indie Rock / Goth Rock / Thrash Metal
So, according to a 1988 Rolling Stone profile that I just read about Björk's old band, The Sugarcubes, and the Icelandic music scene more broadly, the small island nation was pretty musically desolate until about 1981, when UK punk had finally made its way up there. And even after that, Iceland still only had one TV station and one radio station well into the 80s—both of which were state-owned—and the radio station almost exclusively played US top 40 fare.
So, given that landscape, it's then pretty remarkable just how downright weird Icelandic music managed to get so quickly by 1990, which is when this pretty eclectic sampler from The Sugarcubes' own label, Smekkleysa (Bad Taste in English), was released; because it wasn't like Icelanders had a collective easy access to any avantgarde traditions, and they certainly hadn't been organically forging their own either. But if all you and your fellow countrymen have access to for decades is US hits, then I guess the eventual backlash to that can and will turn out to be severe.
So, here's a strange brew of alternative Icelandic tunes that were recorded and released between 1986 and 1990. This label showcase's biggest draw is, naturally, The Sugarcubes, who were one of the first bands to ever receive attention from outside of Iceland (the first was jazz fusion band Mezzoforte; h/t to @dropdead-celebration), when their song, "Birthday," managed to peak at #2 on the UK's Indie chart in 1987, which then caused industry types and journalists to flock to the country itself in order to investigate just what the hell the conditions were like in this small, isolated nation that could lead a band to make something that sounds like that.
But while their exclusive, "My March," received its own sticker on the front of the CD's jewel case—so you'd know that this album had The Sugarcubes on it without having to pick it up and then turn it around in order to view its tracklist—there's actually another band on here that plays the nutty, hall-of-mirrors Sugarcubes style on here too, and with a very similar type of touched little girl vocalizations as Björk as well, but their pair of contributions are, dare I say it, actually better?
Reptile is a band that comes with the following assortment of instruments: your standard drums, guitar, bass, and keyboards, but also a saxophone, a violin, a banjo, and a marimba too. And while that combination sounds like something a bunch of smirking college stoners would probably torture their fellow classmates with, this group actually seems to squeeze out the best sound that anyone possibly ever could with what they have. "Gun Fun," which also appears on their only album, 1990's Fame and Fossils, and their exclusive, "Ó," really do sound a whole lot better than you'd think; a pair of quirky tunes that are unpredictably fun as hell.
But this album's not just made up of a Sugarcubes-type sound; there's also goth rock, thrash metal, industrial, even rockabilly, and also a band called Daisy Hill Puppy Farm (named after Snoopy's home), who deliver a song that totally flies in the face of the vibe that you'd think a band with that name would have; "Young Blood," which also ended up leading their final release, a 1989 12-inch called Spraycan, is a great, ploddingly heavy, downtempo indie rocker that sounds like it came from the States.
So, truth be told, I did not really end up enjoying most of this album, but it's still definitely interesting and worth it to hear some of the varied sounds that this little country that seemed to be pretty culturally isolated from the rest of the world for a really long time for was able to muster in such short order. Other places with far more ease in their many avenues of cultural access seem to have taken a whole lot longer to get to a similar point of weirdness when compared to this small island nation. And while weird stuff tends to stay underground and indie most everywhere else, it seems to not only just rise to Iceland's mainstream, but it becomes their most popular music attraction, overall.
Highlights:
Reptile - "Gun Fun" Reptile - "Ó" Daisy Hill Puppy Farm - "Youngblood"

The body augmentation technique Battle Song is interesting, and the brief explanation from Crow about it was even more so. I haven't tapped into its full potential, but what I've already got going already puts me on a more supernatural level of strength and speed - so long as I don't tear my body apart up using it.
I guess the best way to partly describe Battle Song is utilizing perfect form in a punch - where the muscles simultaneously tense in the last moment to maximize power. Except one could cycle that tension and synchronicity of motion into other parts of the body and amplifying it before releasing it elsewhere. The art's creator Crow can summon the force of their entire body into a single strike instantly - and can amplify a blow several times over give a couple of seconds of time.
I can't say I'm particularly stronger or faster than any other seventeen year old. But Battle Song allowed me to kick a steel table flying into a guy wielding a submachine-gun. Pretty sure if the System didn't allow me to change all damage I deal into non-lethal (it's not as convenient as it sounds), that guy would've died by being pancaked into a brick wall.
The problem is that Battle Song requires a certain sturdiness of body to avoid getting shredded by the forces one is using. Pretty sure I sprained several somethings when I wielded it, but since the System allows me to treat my body as if it were in a Game, I took damage to my health instead - 1/20th to be exact for that one use.
There's a whole multitude of physical status effects in my System like burns and broken bones, but it seems sprains and torn muscles aren't one of them. Good to know.
Battle Song's techniques are named after musical notations. The one I used was Mezzoforte. The other one I know is Allegretto, which augments speed. They and Mezzopiano (dampening the body's sounds) are the starting points of Battle Song.
The starting points of Battle Song allow one to eventually direct their full body's force into an action - so if I master mezzoforte, I should be able to throw my full body's strength into a single kick or punch. The higher levels of Battle Song such as Fortissimo can allow one to cycle that force back into their body and allow one to add to it before releasing it, potentially doubling and tripling the force of a blow.
