My friend and I were watching tonight wondering why My Golden Blood chose the age of 21 for the ✨Golden Blood✨ to wear off. Often, these vampirical tropes are oriented around coming-of-age milestones. But, it’s obvi not the age around the onset of puberty, the age of consent in Thailand is 15, and both the legal drinking age and age of majority/adulthood in Thailand is 20. So why 21?

Well, best guess? The most significant experience that comes at the age of 21 in Thailand is the mandatory military drafting lottery for men in Thailand. @absolutebl did a write-up of the military lottery with some helpful additions in the notes, and there’s also a Thai BL Reddit thread going into more details, as well.

Suddenly, the idea of being protected as a child only to be asked to sacrifice yourself for those in power becomes a bit more prescient. And the divide of wealth between the vampires and Tong and Tonkla also becomes more relevant in this military light since attendance to Ror Dor—which allows boys to skip conscription by participating in training during high school—has financial and geographical barriers. What about the lurking presence of military history (like a Trojan horse) in classes or a vampirical recruitment officer, like Nakan, worming his way onto campuses to encourage voluntary conscription, a strategy increasingly emphasized by the Thai military?

Since this is a BL, even though I don’t see clear commentary on this issue in MGB, it’s also significant to note that Amnesty International has a full report from 2020 about the targeted physical and sexual abuse of conscripts, especially gay conscripts in the Thai military.

Less-than-positive commentary on the military in media is one of the bigger no-no’s in Thailand, right up there with criticism of the monarchy, so it’s always interesting for me to catch a Thai work like MGB gesturing beneath the veil of censorship.

As always, you don’t need to read the political symbolism to enjoy the show, especially when it’s really just a wonderfully cheesy twilight homage, but I think learning about politics and history can be fun, too (and by fun, I mean make you sob about Tonkla again).

Saben cómo y cuándo ordeñar las vacas, y cómo procesar la cuajada para el queso en un departamento que tiene en la producción lechera un importante sustento económico. Debido a que sus sistemas productivos dependen de la naturaleza, han unido esfuerzos para cuidarla. “Recientemente, los campesinos han generado sistemas sostenibles. Recuerdo la experiencia de la Zona de Reserva Campesina de La Perla, en Putumayo, donde tienen un trabajo de apicultura. Creo que el campesinado ha venido haciendo unas apuestas muy importantes por la transición de sus sistemas productivos a sistemas silvopastoriles y agroforestales. Hay, además, una gobernanza ambiental popular en las veredas, entonces tienen tanto acuerdos como sanciones para las personas que los incumplan”, dice Angie Durán, investigadora sénior de la línea de Gobernanza Territorial de Ambiente y Sociedad, una organización no gubernamental que busca “la protección del medio ambiente con un enfoque de derechos humanos”. Para Durán, hay una concepción popular y equivocada de que los campesinos son destructores de la naturaleza, a diferencia de lo que se cree de las comunidades étnicas. En su memoria está grabada la intervención de una persona con la que ha trabajado Ambiente y Sociedad durante sus talleres, quien decía algo así: “Somos 10 millones de campesinos en Colombia y habitamos hace décadas áreas ambientalmente estratégicas. Si nosotros no contribuyéramos al cuidado de la biodiversidad, ya no habría medio país”. Justamente, por esa relación histórica con la naturaleza, los campesinos buscan ser protagonistas de la próxima COP16 que se realizará en Cali, entre el 21 de octubre y 1° de noviembre de este año. ¿Qué retos tiene la participación de esta población en el gran evento y por qué es importante? Los campesinos en la COP16 Hace dos años, en la anterior Conferencia de las Partes (COP15), se adoptó un documento clave llamado “Marco Global de Biodiversidad Kunming-Montreal (MGB)”. En términos simples, el MGB establece una serie de objetivos para detener y revertir la pérdida de biodiversidad a nivel mundial. Entre sus principales puntos se destaca la Meta 3, que busca que los países acuerden la protección del 30 % de las tierras y océanos de todo el planeta para 2030. Para lograrlo, los campesinos podrían ser claves. Según explica la investigadora Durán, hay principalmente dos mecanismos para lograr ese fin. Uno es la delimitación de áreas protegidas, que en nuestro país pueden ser, entre otras, los Parques Nacionales Naturales (PNN). En segundo lugar están las llamadas Otras Medidas Eficaces de Conservación (OMEC). El Convenio sobre la Diversidad Biológica las precisa como “un área geográficamente definida diferente a un área protegida, la cual está gobernada y gestionada efectivamente para que se logren resultados positivos y sostenidos a largo plazo para la conservación in situ de la biodiversidad, las funciones y los servicios ecosistémicos asociados, y los valores cult...

Ajajajaja en lo absoluto eso me engancho mucho más porque me divertí mucho y no le daba miedo ser ella misma junto a mi y algo que me enloquece en alguien es la autenticidad.

[My Golden Blood] Question: How did Mark know about Tong's golden blood?

He clearly knew it before he licked that drop of blood oh so sensually from Tong's finger.

Question is, how did he know about it? How did he become Tong's self-proclaimed protector? Or wasn't it self-proclaimed at all?

Did their paths just cross when Tong was still a kid and got a little injury? Is that how Mark found out? Or was it actually Mark who slaughtered Tong's family in a bout of uncontrollable bloodlust due to the golden blood?

I think Nuan (the woman from the orphanage) knew about the golden blood, too. I'm very excited to find out more about this backstory.

This isn’t a particularly original subject nowadays, but I want to write it from my own perspective. I worked, as the ward manager of 3 inpatient mental health wards, throughout much of the 1990s, at St. Lukes Woodside Hospital in Muswell Hill (’Borders’?).  I revisited the site of the hospital this morning to see what the developers, ‘Handover Hill’ (?), had done with this most patient-friendly of environments. I’m not actually clear what the name of these property developers is, as it’s not emblazoned in their very luxurious property pack, which was given to me by the perfectly nice and friendly estate agent rep, in their office in the grounds of the former mental hospital.  Its former function as an asylum is also not mentioned at all in the pack, as we have become accustomed to expect in these kind of situations. Don’t want the punters to worry that it’s catching, now do we? This suppression of facts  is both a-historic and offensive, and I don’t care how PC this sounds, Hanover Hill does seem a pretty appropriate nomenclature - the handover, at a pretty preposterously low price no doubt, from publicly owned property into private hands, mimicking, in a minor way, nursing shift-to-shift ‘handovers’. It also sounds like Hand Over Fist and even Hand Job, so make of it what you will. St. Lukes was, in many ways, a perfect site in which to deliver mental health care, and almost all of its patients, from what I could gather, loved it. Set up in 1932, as a private sanatorium for ‘neurotic’ patients (which included war veterans, the so-called ‘shell shocked’);  one could easily imagine a film, set in WW2, featuring the burgeoning romance of an injured serviceman and his pretty nurse, with the backdrop of the hospital’s tiled walkways. This new development is a project to exorcise these sort of ghosts, as it always is with former mental health hospitals and their ‘disappearances’. The walkways have gone, for a start, which defined the hospital’s lares and penates for me. Can’t have such bagatelles interrupting prime real estate. Even though it f***s up the fung shui. I only wish that I had Iain Sinclair here, an excoriate of such ‘projects’ and their occluded view of the history of sites, especially of those thathave involved suffering. What we now have is the Heritage Buildings, a part of the site which has “painstakingly restored Victorian and Georgian buildings”, one of which was, in fact, built in a neo-Georgian 1930 style, and the other two in undistinguished high Victoriana. The flat/penthouse in the neo-Georgian gaff, formerly The Boardroom, went for £2,250.000. So, the madmen haven’t left, after all? This is a development aimed at the over -55s, the recently or about-to-be-retired, presumably, with plenty of Baby Boomer geld? In the brochure, we have the usual CGI visions of WASP punters, a headphone-grooving hip dad, a groovy, difficulty-spectacled mum, with lapdog, as per 18th century aristo studies bought up to date for these ‘Woodside Square’ studies. As opposed to Woodside Square Lunatic Asylum. The three original houses on the site - renamed, with predictable pomposity, Avebury (formerly ‘Center Block’), Roseneath ( aka Leawood Day Hospital, for the long term ill) and Norton Lees (formerly the nursing homes and staff canteen), with penthouse to boot. Most sinister, for me, amidst all the estate agent meta-language of bombast and bigging-up, is the rather creepy Stepford Wives scenario of lines like “...the perfect, stylish setting in a neighborhood of like-minded people”. The sort of people who objected to the Friern Reprovision Project (in 1994), which re-sited the former Monster Asylum’s more difficult ‘clients’ slap bang in the middle of solicitor and senior manager land? Are there really so many over -55s who believe this rinsed history and alternative reality? Exclusivity is always a powerful draw, so I doubt whether the particular former layers of this particular cake will mean anything to those who are sold by the underground car park or the (undisclosed) service charge. Most annoyingly of all, for me, they have seen fit to feature the picture of an MGB GT, my car of choice - (with crappy decals, what’s more) - what this says about me, I shudder to think. More ‘dad’ stuff, I expect.

I'm proud of myself because, this week, I was strong enough to withstand most of the spoilers. I didn't even check tumblr, not even once. Only Xitter (I wanted to help the trend).

Oh, why is it so exciting that Mark says he can drink Tong’s blood anytime if he wanted to. Uhh, the control over his urges he displays is so attractive.

I love how the show makes us see how enthralled Mark is by Tong's smell. It feels very intimate, the way Mark stands so close to Tong and drinks him in with his senses. And how affected he is. That gulp! Sexy!

Tong just shoves him out of the room. 🤣

One arm's length of distance between them. Okay, let's see how long Tong can keep this up.

My hurt/comfort loving heart beats so fast. Mark staying with Tong during his nightmare to comfort him. Oh my, I love it. Also, can we appreciate Mark in a white tank top! And this scene shows us how safe Tong is with Mark. He is at his most vulnerable in his sleep, yet Mark does nothing to harm him.

Cracking up here. Mark is amused by the post-it. I seriously love how well the show does comedy. Especially since we just came out of a more serious moment.

Muhaha, I'm dying from laughter here. It was Mark who drew the swooning manga eyes! Hahaha

Ohhhh, Mark, what a man you are. That breakfast looks extraordinary! My goodness!

Lolololol Tong's size is one size smaller than Mark's. That double meaning in “How do you know that applies to ‘all’ my measurements?” – “Isn’t it obvious?” BECAUSE our vamp Mark has already seen all of it in the last episode. 🤣

In the gym scene, Tong is already forgetting his own rule of keeping one arm's length of distance between them.

Oh my god, Mark is fighting for control again. Yeah, a sweaty Tong can have a powerful effect. I understand your thirst, Mark.

That sweaty towel, though. Can't leave such tempting things around your vampire, Tong. 🤣

The way Mark smells Tong’s towel is so beautiful. Like it's the most wholesome smell ever. I wonder what Tong smells like? Like earth and rain and a bit of baby powder?

Oh, no, Mark was discovered. 🤣

That's actually a nice scene with Tong and Thara. She is once again clad all in white. Even her nail polish is white. It's the first time we see her super nice and smiling. I hope she doesn't turn out to play a twisted game. What does she mean with the Golden Blood and the low hanging moon and returning peace? (I noticed there were quite a few shots of the full moon in this episode.) And what does she mean by returning peace? For whom? The vampires? The humans?

I wonder if she can see the developing feelings between Mark and Tong? Surely, such an important detail hasn't escaped her notice?

“A kind heart is prone to shatter.” What kind of foreshadowing is this? Will Tong's heart be broken? I hope not. And Mark is already getting too close. Also, how powerful is Tong's blood, and what effect has it on him? Does it make him stronger? What happens when he turns 21? I have so many questions. Need to read up on theories.

There it is, the BL guitar. But I love it when Gawin plays because he actually can play. Ahhh, so sweet! Mark, you are so whipped!

They are playing basketball! Uh, the white tank top again!

A flashback. So, Mark Jensen couldn't walk. And he was very sick all of his life. That's so sad. He always seems so troubled and brooding. Like he never knew true joy in his entire existence.

Oh noooo, does that mean Miss Nuan didn't really care about Tong? It was all due to the sponsoring money? (I think I speculated that Miss Nuan knows about the golden blood in my review for EP1. Nice to know I was right. ☺️)

Tong is hurting and lashing out at Tonkla, too.

I like Mark’s flashbacks. We're getting to know him better. The show does establish and develop all of the characters so well. That scene between Tong and Mark is beautiful. Mark really feels Tong's pain and loneliness. I can feel how emotional Mark is here. They needed that moment.

I saw their hands touching fleetingly on that guitar. 🤩

Aww, the emotions. Tong's personal guardian vampire. Of course, he can keep the necklace.

I think Mark is already hopelessly in love with Tong.

We need more scenes between Tong and Tonkla!

I absolutely loved EP3! It was a fantastic mix of angst, comedy, and romance.

My god, the preview for EP4 is killing me! That sexual tension! Again the delicious sensuality. The magnetic pull between Mark and Tong. It's incredible!

My Golden Blood Episode 2: This reluctant puppy you must protect (my live reaction)

FINALLY! Almost 12 hours after the episode aired in Thailand, I’m FINALLY able to watch it, too.

As was the case with The Heart Killers before, it was pure hell keeping myself away from the tempting spoilers. 

Of course, weak as I am, I couldn't resist the pull. So this week’s spoilers are:

The funny towel scene! 🤣 (I’m so here for this peak comedy!)

The beautiful hurt/comfort scene where Tong falls unconscious and Mark catches him in his arms. (I have watched this moment countless times already. I don't know the context. Just that it tickles my hurt/comfort sense in all the right ways. Thank you, show, for this sweet tidbit!) 

Mark’s fight against his bloodlust. (Gets me every time. It’s incredibly sexy when he battles the monster in him to protect Tong.) 

The “I’ve watched you for 20 years” scene with a very fiery, defiant, and stubborn Tong. 🫠

That’s it! I’ve waited long enough. Let’s find out how episode 2 is going.

Never skip the intro. It's hauntingly beautiful. 

The strict mother figure in an innocent and pure all-white gown has entered the scene. Love the dramatic music! 🤣

Little defiant, bratty Tong! Your personal vampire stalker with the killer abs and eyes just told you about the existence of vampires and how powerful your golden blood is, and you take an intimidating step closer to your personal bodyguard vamp. I love you, Tong! 

Ohhh, auntie has the cheese dome with the herbal neuralyzer with her. That means I'm getting my wonderful unconscious!Tong scene now. 🫠🫠🫠

Oh man, the chemistry between Tong and Mark is doing its magic again. Look at that lovely smile on Mark’s face! Ah, I love how Mark stands ramrod straight and studies Tong with his brooding eyes. 

Jesus Lord, one of my most favorite scenes so far. The moving OST in the back. The way Tong is so trusting, taking a sniff from that herbal stuff without any questions.  

Then he just falls so very softly against Mark, who catches him effortlessly. So tender and sweet. Look at how Mark's eyes widen a bit. Is he already falling for our precious Tong?

Gyahhhh, I can't. This scene is so sweet. Mark was about to smell Tong and maybe steal a little kiss? Awww! 🫠🫠 Tong is so gorgeous. The way he wakes up is adorable. Aww, come now, Mark, don't be so shy (but it's adorable, too). 

Love them arguing. Tong is so expressive where Mark is calm. 

Watch him, Mark. That puppy is not to be trusted. 🤣

Highly amusing!! I'm laughing my ass off. Tong's rebellious, bratty, and confused expressions are the best! Mark, show him that you can walk in sunlight without setting your sexy ass on fire. 🤣

Sooo, Tong smells nice to Mark? Does he get his human senses back? Or is it just Tong because he's special? Beautiful scene how Mark smells along Tong's arm and how they are both affected by it. 

Uh, Tong has a few powers of deduction. Yes, that guitar was a gift from Mark.

Nooo, guys, Tong cut his finger. Awww, I love how Mark is immediately overcome with bloodlust but fights hard against it. 

Is Thara literally everywhere? 

She seems shady to me. Someone who is walking around all in white is bound to have some stains on them. What are her plans with Mark and Tong. She clearly knows more. 

Gosh, Tong, they will put you into a mental hospital if you keep babbling like that. 

Uhh, so thrilling! I'm clutching my blanket like a lifeline. I love Tong running for his life. Argh, thank God, Mark came to the rescue. (Will Tong eventually get bitten by a vampire? Nakan, perhaps? Or by Mark himself? I want a scene where Mark drinks straight from Tong's neck. Often! I'm here for sexy bloodsucking.)

Nooo, Mark got shot! Wait a sec! He got shot? A 200 year old vampire? Isn't he supposed to be ultra powerful? The fight scene was pretty good, though.  

Tong all worried sick over Mark! Even calling him Mark, not khun. My heart is pounding so fast. He drew his own blood for Mark. Come on, Mark, drop the act and drink his blood! (Why wasn't he tempted like before?) We've all been waiting for round two since EP1. 🤣🫠😁 

Gjdhsrhnk, a golden teardrop (or sweat drop?). He is crying for Mark. Oh my god. And his tears have healing powers! (Does that mean his other …[mind is in the gutter right now 😁 I bet Mark will have the time of his life when they have sex.]). (After rewatching this scene, I think it was sweat.) 

“You smell so nice.” 

Don't mind me. I'm just  melting and swooning over here. 

Oh, please, no, show! You can't leave us hanging here! It was so amazing right now. The episode was too short! And the preview for EP3 looks fabulous! Mark and Tong live together and get closer. We're getting their first kiss! OMG, how to wait seven whole days??? We need a time machine.
