2024 for Movie Health Community
The last few years, I've been posting new endeavors I've been wanting to undertake for the coming year around the time of New Years. Last year, I announced my first original short film, Leech, which premiered on our YouTube channel in May. I also announced that I'd be going through my Vudu/Fandango account and catching up on evaluations from my library of movies there. While I never finished this completely due to my move to Florida and my reduction in free time, I'm still planning on finishing this task.
When it comes to the Flashing Lights Warning Tracks, which I conceived as an idea at the beginning of 2022, I set out to make as many as I could. In 2022, when I lost my voice to mono for two months, it caused a massive delay in what ended up being our most popular FLWT, which was for Everything Everywhere All at Once. When we crossed $50/month in pledges, I attempted to make a new FLWT each month, but this quickly became too much to do. Since my move to Florida, even one every two months has become too much to do. So for 2024, I'll be reducing this to one every 3 months, and I'll have the Oppenheimer FLWT ready by the end of January. The demand for Flashing Lights Warning Tracks has not been as high as I anticipated, so I hope that everyone on Patreon can forgive me for taking a small step back on this effort.
This brings me to my newest endeavor: the Movie Health Community YouTube page, where I've been talking in video form not only about the health hazards at the movies, but also about whether or not I enjoyed them. By joining the chorus of YouTube movie critics, I've been able to expand our reach and attention, and at the same time, do something I love, which is to produce video content.
For 2024, I will be making the YouTube channel a high priority, and it will be taking precedence over the Flashing Lights Warning Tracks. As soon as I am finally settled into a more scheduled and reliable job than Uber, I am hoping to be able to bring more focus to my efforts here on MHC, and bring you more exclusive and early-access content.
I know it probably sounds rehearsed every time I thank you guys in my YouTube videos, but I do mean it when I say that none of what we do would be possible without you. We are the internet's number one source of health warnings at the movies. When you Google the strobe effects of a specific movie, it's almost guaranteed that our evaluation will be on the first page, if not the first result. That's what we as a community have done, and that's why the C in MHC has been a vital part of our goals from day one.

GRAHH OK WHATS MONSTER HUNTERS CLUB IM SO INTERESTED
HYPERFIXATION ACTIVATED—
Ahem I can be So Normal About MHC I swear I swear I'm So Normal—
To answer your question, Monster Hunters Club is a homebrewed campaign based on dnd 5e run by my friend @llcursed-imagell that I've been hyperfixated on for roughly 3(?) Years alfhskfjslfjs!!! It's an urban fantasy meets american gothic storyline following a group of kids in a small West Virginia town as they get pulled into an interdimensional plot that threatens their home.

The original campaign ran for 9 sessions, and I've got roughly 43 ½ hours of audio recorded from them, but due to personal issues the beta campaign was cut short. However, the dm and remaining players still adore the world and characters, so we're planning on reviving it to do an official podcast/multimedia series when everyone is in a safe financial place to do so! In the meantime, I've been doing copious amounts of research into everything from Appalachian folklore to homelessness among queer youth in order to properly flesh out a compelling narrative backstory for my player character, and have been actively working on setting up fully fledged concept art/character designs/comic scripts/etc so when we're ready to start production most of the artistic work is already in progress.

In MHC I play Chorus, a young bard who settled in the small town of New Haven after being homeless for two years. There's honestly So Much I could say about them, but for now I'll leave it at this: Chorus' greatest desire is to reunite with their sister, Artemis, who disappeared from their hometown after a mysterious creature began haunting the woods. They're determined to bring her home safely or die trying.
Monster Hunters Club has been an absolute joy to work on with my friends, and I'm incredibly grateful for the patience of my dm whose been subjected to paragraphs of character thoughts on a nearly daily basis for 3 years akfhskfhsd. I'm really hoping that I'll eventually be able to start producing comics to introduce the characters and world before the campaign gets started, but it'll depend on college/finances/life in general. In the meantime, I'll just keep drawing shitposts, writing music, and making 24 hour long character playlists akfhskfjsk

wait so why is Appalachian folklore important to your character? are they really involved with storytelling are there appalachian monsters you want to involve or something else?
AUTISM ACTIVATION 2: ELECTRIC BOOGALOO
Okay so basically, the entire campaign takes place within the Appalachian region, specifically a small town in West Virginia. This entire region has an incredibly complex history that is often overlooked by outsiders who set stories there. I'm a huge believer in doing research for storytelling, especially when it comes to regions/places/cultures/people that you're not familiar with. Appalachia in particular has often been the victim of what one author referred to as "cultural strip mining," where interesting aspects of the culture are isolated by outsiders who then market them without the cultural context.
When I started crafting Chorus' character, I wasn't even aware that the region they hailed from was considered part of Appalachia. It wasn't until I started doing more research for their backstory that I began to recognize the incredible cultural context they hailed from, and decided that I wanted to make that cultural heritage a more central part of their character. Storytelling and music are already central elements to Appalachian culture, so I started doing research into local folklore, folk magic, and folk music in order to give myself a better understanding of what it would've really been like to be a young queer kid growing up in such an area.
Chorus comes from a long line of Appalachian musicians and rootworkers (one of many terms for those who practice folk magic traditions of the region), and this is something that brings them both pride and shame. Pride because it offers them concrete proof of their own history. Shame because the descendants of their childhood heroes disowned their mother and want nothing to do with them. They grew up learning the oral traditions of their mother's family and the region at large, and were an apprentice to the local midwife in their hometown before they fled. Their whole life has been shaped by the culture that raised them, and it was very important for me to portray that cultural with as much accuracy and respect as I could.
