Baftas It’s a very competitive year.
Oppenheimer beats Barbie as Bafta nominations announced. Christopher Nolan looks set to win his first Bafta with 13 nominations, compared to Barbie’s five.
The film is up for best film, director, adapted screenplay, leading actor for Cillian Murphy, supporting actress for Emily Blunt, supporting actor for Robert Downey Jr, cinematography, editing, costume design, makeup and hair, original score, production design, and sound – but it was overlooked in the visual effects category.
Barbie, along with Margot Robbie’s acting nomination, Barbie is up for original screenplay, supporting actor for Ryan Gosling, costume design and production design.

Persuasion (Carrie Cracknell, 2022)
Cast: Dakota Johnson, Cosmo Jarvis, Richard E. Grant, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Henry Golding, Mia McKenna-Bruce, Nia Towle, Yolanda Kettle, Lydia Rose Bewley, Edward Bluemel, Afolabi Alli. Screenplay: Ron Bass, Alice Victoria Winslow, based on a novel by Jane Austen. Cinematography: Joe Anderson. Production design: John Paul Kelly. Film editing: Pani Scott. Music: Stuart Earl.
Persuasion is not as bad as I'd heard. I knew it had been described as a kind of mashup of Bridgerton (non-traditional casting) and Fleabag (breaking the fourth wall), and that Austenites were appalled. There are two ways to adapt a classic novel to film: follow it as faithfully as you can, reproducing the substance of the story and the milieu in which it takes place, or use the story as a springboard for a modern adaptation -- e.g. the translation of Emma into Clueless or of Pride and Prejudice into Fire Island. Carrie Cracknell's Persuasion falls somewhere in between, taking the bones of the Austen novel and its Regency setting, and viewing them through a contemporary sensibility. It doesn't work here, but it might have. Armando Iannucci came closer with his Dickens adaptation, The Personal History of David Copperfield (2019), which also used non-traditional casting (including Persuasion's Nikki Amuka-Bird) and has a 21st-century sensibility clearly operating throughout. Iannucci may have succeeded in part because he didn't go as far as Persuasion's screenwriters in mixing today's casual speech with the author's period dialogue. Jane Austen's contemporaries would never have referred to former lovers as “exes,” for example. Persuasion is a misfire, but it's often fun to watch.

BAFTA Awards…
PUNCH Online reports that the BAFTA Awards are presented in an annual ceremony by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).
These awards honour outstanding achievements in the film industry, both British and international, and are considered among the most prestigious film awards globally.
The BAFTA Awards were first held in 1947, making them one of the oldest film awards ceremonies. The awards ceremony usually takes place in London, and it attracts a significant amount of attention from the film industry and the public.
On categories, BAFTA Awards are presented in various categories, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and many technical and creative categories like cinematography, editing, and costume design.
BAFTA Awards eligibility and voting…
Meanwhile, films eligible for consideration are not limited to British productions; they include international films released in the United Kingdom during the qualifying period. BAFTA also has specific categories, such as Outstanding British Film, to recognize and celebrate British cinema.
The winners are determined through a voting process involving BAFTA members, who are professionals across various branches of the film industry. The voting process is designed to ensure that the awards represent the consensus of the industry.
While the BAFTA Awards are prestigious in their own right, they are also seen as influential in the larger awards season, including the Oscars. Many films that perform well at BAFTA often go on to receive nominations and accolades at other major film festivals and awards ceremonies.
The BAFTA Awards ceremony typically takes place in February, with nominees and celebrities from the film industry attending the event. The ceremony is popular for its red-carpet arrivals, speeches, and celebrations of outstanding achievements in film.
It contributes significantly to the recognition and celebration of excellence in the film industry, providing a platform for filmmakers and artists to showcase their work and receive acknowledgment for their contributions.

The Witcher Braids: S1 E1
Part 1 of (hopefully 8, IN WHICH I attempt to do all the braided styles seen in Netflix’s The Witcher. (Nothing requiring heat -- I’m not attempting cosplay recreations here, I’m just interested in figuring out the braids and recreating them.
I did two styles from episode 1: Marilka’s hair, and Ciri’s “casual court” hair. Reference pictures, my pictures, and ratings scale below the cut.
First up: Marilka, who I wish we’d seen more of. She’s obnoxious and ~~edgy~~ in a completely believable way and I like her a lot.
REFERENCE PICTURES:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The one shot where we would have had a PERFECT view of her hair put an extra right between her and the camera, so this is what we’re working with.
OBSERVATIONS:
Her hair is parted down the middle and softly pulled back into two braids, which are pinned up in two low, separate buns right at the base of the skull.
This definitely looks like two little anchor buns with braided extensions. BUT, that’s the hair that actress Mia McKenna-Bruce was wearing on set, not the hair that our girl Marilka is wearing in Blaviken.
AN ATTEMPT:
Tumblr media
Ok, before we start: this is my hair. Medium weight, some waves, mid-back length. (I won’t do this every time, just this first time around.)
Now, Marilka’s hair. This really isn’t a hard style, but unless you have extremely long hair that’s thicker than mine or choose to use extensions, you probably won’t get the bulk we see on Marilka’s braided buns. I fluffed out both my braids and pinned them laterally against my head instead of sticking out, like the reference picture, and they’re still rather delicate.
Tumblr media
(Sorry for the weird pose, but I remembered my place of employ was listed on my sweatshirt and didn’t feel like removing it.)
Tumblr media
RATINGS:
Difficulty: 2/10. You just have to make braids, then pin them to your head in a circular fashion. This is probably harder in-universe, unless there’s some bobby-pin manufacturer on the Continent that I’m unaware of.
Practicality/appropriateness: 9/10. Easy! Practical! Knocked a point off because it lets lots of whispies fly around your face and requires lots of pins.
Bobby pins required: 6, plus two clear hair ties.

PRINCESS CIRILA’S ‘CASUAL COURT’ HAIR
REFERENCE PICTURES:
This was a dratted difficult thing to get a picture of. This is the best I’ve got. (There may be promo pics of this hairstyle, but I doubted they’d have the back visible so I didn’t bother looking.)
Tumblr media
OBSERVATIONS:
The first thing that stands out is how this half-back style mirrors Geralt’s.
Huh.
I’m sure that doesn’t mean anything.
As far as I can tell, this is a dutch braid, started right at the hairline and with small bits added at a time.
EDIT: It occurred to me that the new parts of the braid might not be added, they might be swapped out, with the old ones getting dropped. This would make for a smaller braid, but when I tried it it was much harder to keep the tension. Also, it was a hot mess.
AN ATTEMPT:
I’m not sure if this is Freya Allan’s hair or a wig, but either way, I learned quickly that Ciri’s hair is much thinner than mine.
Tumblr media
(The awkward ‘Venus in the Half Shell’ hands are back. I’ll wear something unbranded next time.)
Tumblr media
This braid is much thicker on my hair than in the reference pictures, to the point where I thought I might have misinterpreted the style. But no, I think that Ciri’s hair is baby-fine.
You can see how my braid pulls off  the side a bit at the top -- I prefer adding large chunks at a time when I style my own hair, and adding small bits meant it got a bit wonky.
Difficulty: 6/10. Not terrible, but a dutch braid isn’t exactly beginner stuff, especially such a delicate one and on your own head.
Practicality/appropriateness: 10/10. Listen, it’s not appropriate for *me*, but I think it’s great for Ciri. It’s princess-ly without being showy, it keeps your hair out of your face, it’s quick.
Bobby pins required: none. one clear hair tie.
*
*
*
*
STUFF I LEFT OUT
I skipped the funky looking braids the naked ladies were wearing. Renfri’s hair isn’t braided.
Ciri and Calanthe both have more formal up-dos during this episode, but we don’t get good looks at them, and they both require ornaments I don’t have. Also, since Calanthe’s hair is so dark, it’s hard for me to make out details unless the lighting in the scene is quite bright. Which it rarely is.
