Worst feeling is being a radical, over the top, chronically online fan in a normal fandom cause where do I find my people who think these obviously straight, cis, neurotypical characters are actually gay, trans, autistic characters.

also found episodes of Tracy Beaker Returns on YouTube! and watched one. i remember it. it was the first one of Jody.
i love Jacqueline Wilson books. and i loved Tracy Beaker. and whenever i watched TV as a kid (not that often), i would watch Tracy Beaker or Tracy Beaker Returns or The Dumping Ground (if it was on).
i probably will do a full rewatch maybe and see how many episodes i recognise or remember...
i used to have a DVD of the Tracy Beaker film i am pretty sure (don't remember the exact title but i remember how the DVD case looked like). so probably still have that somewhere
i am enjoying going back to childhood things i enjoyed then. and still enjoy now. it is nice and makes me feel the same as back then. which age-wise is how i feel anyway, i don't feel like a grown up. i feel like i didn't age at the same rate as other kids ever, i never was at the same level. and just feel like still a kid and stopped getting older at all at some point maybe. i don't know
it is really nice anyway. would love to read all the Jacqueline Wilson books all over again. used to have a bit of a collection but i think they got given away. sad. but i also used to borrow from the library a lot. i loved those books so much!

My Tracy Beaker returns/dumping ground headcanons
(For @chrissamaxwell)
Warning some of these are a bit sad :(
- Johnny considered Tee and Cameron to be his best friends (they just thought of him as brother and Tee’s brother).
- Cameron had a small crush on Johnny when they first met.
- Johnny has autism and ocd.
- Liam thought of the other kids as family and stayed in contact with everyone who left.
- Ryan, Floss, Mo, Joseph, Charlie and Gus all had autism.
- Ryan had a small crush on Tee before she was mean to him.
- Elektra was a lesbian.
- Sasha, Ryan and Alex were all bisexual.
- Kazima grew up to be a care worker/foster mother.
- Gus was accepted into a super fancy music school and later given the opportunity to be a famous pianist and turned it down cause he didn’t like people watching him.
- Liam was dyslexic and never told anyone because he preferred people to think he was trouble and didn’t try than to think he couldn’t.
- Gina and Mike were a lot of the kids emergency contacts even after they left care.
- Mike was Tracy’s emergency contact for years even once she was an adult.
- Candi-rose and Chloe go on monthly girl days to assure they stay in touch.
- Ryan bought a small dog to try and help him get over his fear, it didn’t work so he gifted it to Chloe who jokingly named it ‘Ghost’ to annoy him.
- Tee made a group chat and added all the older tdg kids, it isn’t used very often but they update eachother when one of them gets a new job, gets married, has kids, etc.

The Story of Tracy Beaker (2002-6), Movie of Me (2004), Tracy Beaker Returns (2010-2), The Dumping Ground (2013+), The Beaker Girls (2021-3)
Children in care face life challenges at a young age as they search for their place to fit into the world.
Considering the cast is largely made up of child actors the shows have been very lucky since most of the cast suit the kind of roles they’re chosen for, even when the acting isn’t the best the style of comedy compensates for it and on occasion there’s an effective touching moment of emotion where the performance will hold up particularly well.
Although it’s engaging to see the kids deal with more adult concerns than average children would have to, it’s important to remember that young people are already exposed to adult topics through their parents. This does make it strange when the show in the early stages has to carefully avoid mentioning some topics like sexuality or be especially careful and clinical when discussing issues like racism.
There’s a fair variety of plotlines and they do seem to have developed since the early series, even when dealing with similar subject matter. The cast is varied and neurodivergent characters are dealt with realistically but well. There’s a fairly high turnover rate for characters since the care system only continues until adulthood but the series are good at having occasional returns of past characters.
Sometimes the structure of the story can get somewhat formulaic and that’s especially obvious when some characters behave irrationally aggressive suddenly so that drama can be started or sustained. A few narrative devices are repeated a little too often, like characters threatening to leave when things become difficult, however it at least has the benefit that they have a believable place to go by moving care homes or getting different work.
The Story of Tracy Beaker: 5/10 -Can’t find a better example of average-
The Movie of Me: 5/10 -Can’t find a better example of average-
Tracy Beaker Returns: 6/10 -Just a cut above average-
The Dumping Ground: 6/10 -Just a cut above average-
The Beaker Girls: 5/10 -Can’t find a better example of average-
-The animation in Story, Returns, and Dumping Ground were done by the writer of the books on which these series are all based.
-Some of the books can be seen in the backgrounds of the series.
-Although Elektra is never specifically referenced as LGBT+, a pride flag can be seen on her bedroom wall.
