Friday, March 31st
Guest blogger: Charlie
Woke up - and I really did not want to get up - but once I did I got up and got dressed really quickly. We ate toast and packed up to go to Peggy's. We got a cab this time because of all the stuff.
There were subways going over the Manhattan bridge which I thought was interesting. I wondered if we could take a subway just to go over the bridge. It might not sound that interesting but since I'm a tourist it's the most amazing thing in the world.
When we got to Peggy's we dropped off stuff and got a couple crackers for the road.
Our first stop was the Michael Aram store, where there was gold everywhere, left-right-front-back. We were looking for something for some about $105 dollars for a prize that Melissa won when she was 15. We picked a silver peacock feather that we think would look good hanging on her wall. We dropped that at Peggy's and headed to SoHo for the Museum of Ice Cream.
When we got there there was a huge line. We finally got our tickets and we got inside. As we walked inside there was a huge whoosh of sweet air and everything was very pink. But they told us not to stop - and we continued walking into the admission room which was a hallway with ice cream cone patterns and a ice cream history timeline. Then we went into a room where we chose our ice cream name. My name was Chocolate Charlie with Whipped Cream. Melissa was Baked Alaska. We continue to a big room with a tiny stage and lots of ice cream. The choices were cherry sorbet and pink vanilla - but it was really vanilla with marachino cherry juice.  Delicious! I recited: “To be or not to be. To be... eaten.”
The whole place was very very pink: the walls are pink, the ice cream is pink and the workers are wearing pink. We went upstairs with vivid pink lightning that led to a yellow room, with doors that would open with scenes of milk being poured, and ice cream being scooped.
Then there was a subway that looked like you were flying and everything was pink. There was a room full of bananas and so many phone calls!  Then I bounced in the tiny bounce house. There was a room where it looked the walls were ice cream that were being scooped by giant scoops. They where serving ice cream in that room (obviously). The options were cotton candy and vegan strawberry. I got vegan strawberry. Then there was the only museum part of the museum: historical ice cream scoops and ice cream facts.
Further on there was a slide. It was such a good slide. It was twirly. You were handed a potato sack. You would twirl until it was black. You would arrive at your destination - a lovely melting cave with dimly lit lanterns. In that room there was more ice cream. The options were soft serve chocolate soft serve and pineapple. There were puzzles and a word search.
The next room was like a playground with jungle gym and arcade serving cotton candy and lots of fun. Then there were wonky mirrors and then you went up a long hallway with red vents on each side of you with gentle light. You went up the ramp getting close until you could peek through. Then you reach lockers. What where you going to do there? It was a pool of sprinkles! It was amazing. It moved and sounded like water. We spent a ton of time there. Then we grabbed our shoes and reached the end. But no! We turn around and did half the museum again in reverse. We got some more cotton candy and played with everything again.
We were walking down the street to go back to Peggy's and I suddenly said "Hello Mother!" because my mother was walking down the street.
Then we to a concert and had dinner. It was overwhelming. Grandma said that's what Italian restaurants are like. It was stressful and noisy.
I wish my flight was cancelled until next week.   But the ice cream museum was definitely the highlight of it all.

AN AMERICAN SATAN - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Omnibus Entertainment
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: In 1966 in California a former organist and lion tamer named Anton Szandor LaVey founded the Church of Satan. Over the years it has often been surrounded by mysteries, scandals and moral panics. In this documentary some of today’s active members of the church and other free-styled Satanists share their views, memories, ritual practices and personal stories about how they got involved with Satanism. They discuss the false myths that still surround the movement. It is an immersive journey into one the most fascinating phenomena of American religious pluralism.
REVIEW: As a New Yorker, a horror fan, and a member of several literary genre organizations you would assume that I most likely would be aware of the Church of Satan, “The Satanic Bible,” and Anton LaVey. In fact I am. However, I first encountered “The Satanic Bible” as part of a world religion class that I was taking my junior year at an all boys Catholic School. Later on I became acquainted with Peter H. Gilmore, who was the head of the New York Chapter for the Church of Satan and was editing a small press horror journal at the time. Through our friendship I came to know other members of the church. In the late 80’s I had the opportunity to interview Anton LaVey, once live on air and the second pre-recorded and edited, for the radio station I was working at. So I was eager to view AN AMERICAN SATAN.
Aram Garriga’s documentary does an excellent job of painting a well developed portrait of LaVey through archival recordings and interviews of people who had direct contact with him and knew him well. The film also lays out the founding of The Church of Satan, the splinter groups that formed, and where the church stands today. It’s interesting to see how it evolved from its Californian roots to now have its foundation on the East Coast in New York.
The film helps put LaVey’s life in context. Still many of the things LeVay claims about his past as shown in the archival footage is not disputed. Many researchers have tried to substantiate his claims of working for a carnival/circus, as a photographer for the San Francisco Police Department, or working as an organist at the Mayan Theater during burlesque shows, but none of it could be substantiated beyond a reasonable doubt.  While the film offers no rebuttal to his claims, it is clear from old footage and the interviews that he was “quite the showman.” Not only did he create flair and theatrics to his rituals. He was a charismatic character that could muster an audience.
The film does a nice job of placing the founding of the church within the historical context of the 60’s and 70’s, and you can understand it as a reaction to the philosophies of free love and American puritanism creating so much noise that LeVay was reacting to. If the following years of hysteria caused by “Rosemary’s Baby,” The Exorcist,” and the rise of so called secret satanic cults and child abuse that plagued the talk shows had never happened he very well might have gathered a larger following. LeVay took to the stage and defended his belief system. The showman was in the right place, but at the wrong time. He became the public’s poster child for what they want to believe. Still, it did not inhibit him.
Garriga does an excellent job of contextualizing the man, the events, and the current state of the church he founded. It’s interesting how the Church of Satan is still out there in the world but is not so much in the public’s zeitgeist. In some ways the film serves as a reminder of its existence. That there are still practicing members and other splinter groups. In examining where things stand now, it seems that the church has almost returned to its founder's roots of his self claimed experiences with the carnies and sideshow performers.
AN AMERICAN SATAN is an entertaining and thought provoking look at a period in time which gave rise to a more self fulfilling belief system born out of a frustration with the Catholic religion and church goers with double standards. It’s interesting that years later the 1987 film “Wall Street” gave us the clean cut Wall Street trader Gordon Gekko who uttered, “Greed is good!” One of many beliefs of the Church of Satan, but it received a different reaction. AN AMERICAN SATAN offers viewers a challenge to understanding what we believe in light of who is delivering the message, its packaging, and branding. It might just be that the Church of Satan isn’t what we ever needed to fear.

A short horror film is a brief-but-effective form of horror media; unlike full length movies, a horror short aims to frighten the viewer with a scary story told within the span of mere minutes. I’ve compiled a list of my favorite short features from several different horror sub-genres, and have also included links to where the entire short can be watched for free. Please be aware that any of the films listed below may contain jump scares, flashing lights, or depictions of subject matter that you find distressing or offensive. Image art is from “Winston”.

Eurovision 2010s: 105 - 101
105. Mariya Yaremchuk - “Tick tock” Ukraine 2014
youtube
Conform with the “GODDESSES ONLY” clause of their Eurovision contract, Ukraine once again have blessed us with an amazing opener (Seriously. First Melovin, then Eduard, now this? WE WERE ROBBED OF MARUV OPENING THE FINALE).
"Tick tock” is a bit too elementary to put into my top 100, HOWEVER that is also why it’s such an easy song to get into. High (production-)quality Ukranian trashpop 😍 Which won Vidbir as an unintentional incest anthem 😍 (if you don’t know, the original version opened with “We belonged to each other, like a sister to a brother” Cersei Lannister is quaking.)
Naturally, the main reason why Mariya ranks this high is, of course, the staging. THE HAMSTER WHEEL IS LEGENDARY:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mariya casually flinging herself on top of that giant spinning contraption and torturing her poor hot dancer. 😍 I’d say the staging makes no sense, but then I realized Ukraine probably went with this act because it’s DIRT CHEAP <3 (which is funny as long as you don’t think about why they went with a lowbudget act 😭). It’s just so... honorarily Moldovan? 😍 Ukraine and Moldova using each other as horcruxes <3 Name a more epic ESC alliance, I will wait. Until then,

104. Sanja Vucic - “Goodbye (Shelter)” Serbia 2016
youtube
... let us celebrate this glorious cross-over between “Molitva”, “Running” and “l’Amore è femmina”. 😍 “Shelter” takes the best aspects from these three entries and combines them into a increasedly shouty mess. As you can imagine, I LOVE this witches’ cabal of hackneyed hand choreos, shredded leather and facial gymnastics. Most ESC performers would keep their miming to the precise amount of what they need, but Sanja is (and has always been) so UNPLUGGED with her irate facial expressions. A reel:
Tumblr media
Which, in a song with such a HEAVY topic as spousal abuse is actually quite appropriate. You show those awful shit husbands, girl!!!
And you’d think that would be *IT*, but nope you’re wrong because :TEEHEE: I also think “Shelter” is a great song even without the messy misandry. The song is catchy, moody and highly relistenable. It’s one of the better mid-tier bops of this ranking. No wonder it got televotes from all over Euro-
Tumblr media
oh. (🤣)
CONGRATZ BOJANA ON BEING THE HIGHEST RANKED SERBIAN ENTRY.
________________________________________________________________
103. Alyona Lanskaya - “Solayoh” Belarus 2013
youtube
Tumblr media
HI 🙂 MY NAME IS ALYONA LANSKAYA 🙂 I AM FROM BELARUS 🙂 MY SONG SOLAYOH.  🙂
2013 is mostly remembered as the year of ‘splicing unnecessary dubstep into your song’, but there is another recurring trend which was even better. The ‘female performer enters the stage with STYLE’ and as far as stylistic entrances go, Alyona’s is one of the best. This emissary  from the planet Solayoh emerged immediately from her discoball-shaped Escape pod upon landing to tell us all the love and joys of her homeworld 😍
What follows is a lametastic banality anthem, riddled with ESL sentences (”We can make it into hot night” 😍.) and of course, a few iconic hand choreographies:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Topping off the hilarity is the idea of a well-off socialite such as Alyona Lanskaya singing about how “she had work hard all day :lip pout:” while wiggling her dress’s cerulean bossom fringes. 😍😂 Bribing juror being such hard work. <3 We stan lazy queens. 😍
________________________________________________________________
102. Sofi Marinova - “Love unlimited” Bulgaria 2012
youtube
DO REN DEM DEM DEI
Speaking of lazy queens, remember when Bulgaria send an act that consisted entirely of a haggard ponytailed garuda wiggling her diddeys around like-a-so:
Tumblr media
I’m only a recent convert to the Church of Marinova, only seeing the light during my last rewatch and I mean, how could I not fall in love eventually? “Love unlimited” is such a lowbudget afair, a basic dance track whose sole gimmick is saying “I love you” in like 46 different languages. 😍
As such, "Love unlimited” totally shouldn’t work... and yet it absolutely does? It’s a similar deal to Jurij, except the person taking the stage here is a lovably dimwitted middle-aged hagress who is completely oblivious to the fact that she has no chance to qualify and is giving still giving it her damn’ all, in doing so ALMOST reaching the final from a lost position. WHAT A TROOPER. I LOVE *YOU* SO MUCH, Sofi-Trophy. 😍
________________________________________________________________
101. Conan Osiris - “Telemóveis” Portugal 2019
youtube
A lot of people blame several artistic decisions behinds Conan’s NQ, but I’ve had my doubts even before the rehearsals began: this is what I wrote a full month before the semi:
Conan’s main problems rise from the fact that he tries to be artistic and humorous at the same time, and the two cancel each other out somewhat.
(...) There’s a very high chance “Telemóveis” highbrow message will  fly over the heads of the audience and there’s an equally high chance it will backfire on Conan when it does.
Portugal faces severe competition from the other acts. They compete with Slovenia for the “This Is High Quality” value-seeking vote, with Iceland and Australia for the novely vote and with Czech Republic and Greece for the “yeah this is actually really fucking clever” highbrow vote. He even competes with Serhat somehwat, both being OTT acts that are on later in the semi.
It could very well mean death by a thousand cuts for Portugal.
SURPRISE, I actually got it right for once!!
Of course, “Telemóveis” was less good in Tel Aviv than it was during FdC (people incorrecly blame the dress. I personally thought it was a combination of nerves, João spraining his knee and technical difficulties, much more than the dress).
Anyway, even if he wasn’t as good in Tel Aviv, a lesser “Telemóveis” is still pretty damn great so idk why everyone was is tripping? The song was still a disarmingly weird acid trip of fado funk, snappy vocals and a bonkers choreography that left the average viewer utterly GOBSMACKED. 😍 It’s one of those entries where, when looking back in a few years, everyone will say was way AHEAD of the curve and that’s never a bad demograph to be a part of.
CONGRATZ SUZY ON WINNING PORTUGAL!!! But moreover,

THE INSTITUTE - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Gravitas Ventures
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS:  Daniel and Marie seem to be out of options to have a baby after Marie’s reproductive organs are left mangled due to a bad surgical procedure. Daniel comes across what may be their last hope, Dr. Arthur Lands and his The Landis Institute. Desperate to have a child, they begin treatment at a renowned doctor's secluded facility. However, the couple becomes suspicious when the medical regimen brings on psychological side effects. As they attempt to learn the truth about The Institute things take a dark turn and they begin to realize they might be the captives of their mistake.
REVIEW: There have been several films recently released that do an excellent job of combining human and women rights issues and abuse with the horror genre that shines a light on the subject and gives the viewer something to think about. You might consider them socially relevant horror films. THE INSTITUTE is not one of them.
Hamza Zaman’s screenplay attempts to put a contemporary veneer on a genre cliched. Instead of a young couple in an old dark horse, the home of a mad scientist, this couple is motivated by their desire to have a child to this clinic set deep in the woods, far from civilization or cell signals. There are some shady lab assistants and misshapen henchmen lurking about. There’s not much meat on the bone here as early on you can see where this is going and there is not much to these characters. They feel superficial and cliched. There a numerous sex scenes and back in the day the film might be considered “soft porn.”
The cinematography, costumes, and location look great and elevate the film a bit. The effects are kind of kitschy and the Dr.’s fertility lab looks like a contemporary “Flash Gordon” set. The editing adds some momentum to the film, but there are some choppy cuts. The fight sequences were a bit humorous, and I’m not sure they were supposed to be.
The cast is okay. I’m not sure if it is simply the script or the direction, or the combination of both, that often have these performances feeling like nails on a chalkboard. When the cast is together there is this static feeling that prevents the viewer from entertaining the drama. There are moments early on when Ignacyo Matynia and Victorya Brandart are likable. Mark Lobene is okay as Dr. Arthur Lands, but when he ups his intensity I felt like I was watching “Plan Nine From Outer Space.” Okay, so the director, Hamza Zaman, plays the Yogi. His big scene leads the group to an orgy scene. Give me a break!
THE INSTITUTE feels like it should have taken place in a mental institution rather than a fertility clinic. Not one to watch with the kids, and not sure it’s much of a “date night” film for genre fans. It seems like a good idea, but there is no gravitas to the story. The film has more of a sitcom tone than a genre film. This is an old school film that may find a small audience, but lacks the vision to be reimagined for a present-day audience. It lacks a clear vision as to what it wants to be and given some of the plot points it goes off the rails and into a confusing ditch.
CAST: Ignacyo Matynia, Victorya Brandart, Mark Lobene, Joy Donze, Claire McClain, Louisa Bradshaw, Jarred Harper and John Easterlin.
