Aaliyah (alongside best friend Kidada Jones) attend the premiere of the animated movie, Anastasia, in New York City on November 14, 1997, at the Metropolitan Opera house. The film was released theatrically in the United States on November 21.

The movie made $140 million at the box office (with a 53-million-dollar budget) and stars the voices of Meg Ryan, John Cusack, Kelsey Grammer, Kirsten Dunst, Angela Lansbury, and more.

The film was nominated for two Academy Awards, for Best Original Musical or Comedy Score and Best Original Song (for "Journey to the Past"). Aaliyah was invited to perform her version of "Journey to the Past" live at the ceremony.

Aaliyah shared that she was feeling nervous during the moments prior to her performance.

"As I was walking down the carpet {at the 1998 Oscars}, all these people kept telling me it was going to be the most-watched Oscars ever which didn’t help. Michael Bolton was singing after me and we were both backstage going, ‘God, are you as nervous as I am?’ It was a hell of an experience"
