The sun in your eyes made some of the lies worth believing, I am the eye in the sky, looking at you, I can read your mind, I am the maker of rules, dealing with fools, I can cheat you blind.

I love this scene so much, and this episode is one of my favorites of the entire series. Gordo tells Ed shortly after this singing moment that he is having a good time, and while he probably believes that's true in the moment, he's really only masking his pain. That's so evident in the scene after this, with Gordo and Ed on the side of the road. Gordo hits rock bottom, as he spirals more deeply into his depression, feeling like he's nothing now. He feels like he has no purpose nowadays & no sense of direction. Ed sees this & tries to instill a renewed sense of purpose in him by assigning him to Jamestown 91 at the end of the episode. Of course, Gordo is terrified, but it's exactly what he needs. He needs to get back on the horse. He needs something to do. Something that feels meaningful & can make Gordo feel like he's doing something important again. ♥♥♥

Kahn was Edwin “Ed” Walter Kahn, born on June 3, 1922 in Pittsburg to “Theodore and Helen H. (Meyers),” and a “construction company executive, engineer” (Who’s who in the West: A Biographical Dictionary of Noteworthy Men and Women of the Pacific Coast and the Western States, A.N. Marquis Company, 1989). In 1935, he lived with is family in Portland, Oregon. He was still with his family in Portland in 1940 (per the 1940 U.S. Federal Census). However, he attended Fairfax Senior High School in Los Angeles, CA. Before WWII, he also attended UCLA, where he played soccer and baseball. In WWII, he was a lieutenant pilot in the USA Air Force -  a B-24 bomber pilot in the 89th and as a flight instructor. He was later a civil engineer and, if I understand the abbreviations correctly, he had gotten a B.S. degree in civil engineering from the University of California in 1948 (assuming Berkeley).

According to his obituary, he was a “Registered Professional Engineer and a licensed General Contractor.”

He married Arleen Barbara Rudolph on December 23, 1951, and they had two children - Gregory Michael and Julia Fran. He was the chief structural designer for General Engineering Service Company in Los Angeles in 1948 and then a partner in Pollak-Kahn & Associates, engineers, also in Los Angeles in 1949. and Mogil-Kahn Construction Company (World Who’s who in Commerce and Industry, Volume 10, Marquis-Who’s Who., 1957). He died February 5, 2016 and is buried in the Hollywood Hills Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Pollak-Kahn was located at 1106 S. La Cienega Boulevard, now LB4LB Boxing Gym (Glaziers Journal - Volume 35, pg. 60, 1956). One project they had was the design and engineering of “a fully integrated community for light industry” on a 100-acre “tract of industrial buildings and plant sites” (Industrial Development, Volumes 3-4, Conway Publications, 1956).

According to the realty company, Crisby Doe Associates, “it is clear that Pollack & Kahn fully mastered the now classic post & beam glass house style pioneered by the U.S.C. School of Architecture just after war. Their work seems most closely aligned with that of Richard Dorman’s designs of the period. The living spaces are lifted, and set above the carport to allow maximum light and views from the close-in hillside setting.”

Some more info from his obituary: “He retired after 40 years as a real estate developer and as President of Kahn Construction Co., Contractors and Engineers. He had a commercial pilot's license and served as a docent at the original Museum of Flying in Santa Monica. Ed was a member of the Masons, Scottish Rites, Shriners, Commemorative Air Force, Air Force Association, and the American Society of Civil Engineers. Ed is survived by his wife and best friend, Mariko, sons Greg and Winston, daughter Julie, stepdaughters Pam (Harry) Kraushaar and Andrea (Jeffrey) Lustgarten, stepson Mitchell Barnow (Dale Leininger) and step grandchildren, Shelby Powell (Brian), Kimberley Kraushaar, Brandon and Rachel Lustgarten.” (No mention of Arleen?) They also had two pets named Maya and Corey.  

I have no idea who Mogil is. Really strange how I could find out so easily who Kahn was but not Mogil. Mogil may be Norbert V Mogil, who was located at 6517 W Olympic Blvd according to the Los Angeles Street Address Directory, 1956, May (Los Angeles Public Library).

It is a truly magnificent collection of sci-fi short stories. Completely legal. But also made entirely of poor quality photocopies of pre-marked pages on mediocre paper stock, that has seen 24 years of use.

I dream of being able to buy this collection (I have since purchased the majority of these stories in other publications, so it isn’t all lost when it wears out) in book form. When I’m in full wish on a star mode, I wish I could have this as an Easton Press style leather bound collector’s item, but I realize that, at least, is currently beyond what can be done.

But with all the print on demand infrastructure we now have in place... I feel like a nice self selected short story collection should be possible. Letting everyone have their own favorites which could be swapped out on demand.

For instance I have The Color out of Space in a leather bound H.P. Lovecraft collection. But another favorite story, All The Last Wars at Once by George Alec Effinger, I have only in an ancient textbook that was printed before I was born, so I would probably swap those. Or I’m much fonder of Love is the Plan, the Plan is Death! by James Tiptree Jr. than I am of Houston, Houston, Do You Read? by James Tiptree Jr. so I might swap those. Or, just you know, whatever.

It seems like such a good idea to me and it seems like it should be doable. I remember Tower Records back in maybe 1994 having essentially a recording jukebox mixtape maker where you could buy a blank cassette, pick 12 songs, and pay for your own high quality tape. They had all the rights and creation infrastructure in place. If they could do that with music in the 90′s, and readers are just part of college life, I don’t see why we couldn’t do something the same with short story collection books now.

I just want it.

The Thing:Artbook - Who all is in this thing??

So, who all is involved with “The Thing:Artbook” you ask? Well, I am here to give you an answer. Listed below is the list of all the artists who have a piece that is included in the book. Some of them have more than one, some produced more than one, but we had to make hard decisions about inclusion.

When we started out on this project, an idea conceived last year in May, and once we had secured the approval from Universal Studios to move ahead, we had hoped to make it a book with primarily comic industry folks because that’s who we knew. Once we started to reach out to folks with information about the project the response was so positive, we decided to branch out a little and include some illustrator friends and designer folks. Again, the response was so overwhelmingly positive we decided to invite whoever we thought we could get on board. Then, people started coming to us as word of the project began to spread. We were blown away and humbled by the caliber of talent who have agreed to be a part of this book.

We hope you will be pleasantly surprised and excited as you go through the list below and see the participants listed. You will probably have heard about many of them already, but hopefully there will be some surprises as well.

SINOPSIS :

New from Al and Linda Lerner on Movies and Shakers: The Invisible Man

This re-imagining of The Invisible Man is a frightfully good time. Elisabeth Moss is committed as the woman who refuses to give in to the sociopath who stalks and torments her from the opening scene.  Writer/Director Leigh Whannell makes sure that even though she made the dumbest move by hooking up with this guy, she is not dumb. This film is relentless with a #metoo trope in that the director keeps showing Moss as Cecilia strong physically and mentally. What makes it white-knuckle-worthy is that you can’t see her enemy, nor can she.

Universal has put this modern version of H.G.Wells’ classic monster  into the capable horror-movie making hands of Blumhouse and Leigh Whannell (Upgrade) on a low $7 million budget. Whannell’s Cinematographer, Stefan Duscio, has taken advantage of every angle and sharp camera moves around corners to help you feel terrified for what this woman is up against. 

Many scenes contain a lot of stunt work created using CGI, mechanical techniques including wires to drag actors as if they’re been pulled by the Invisible Man. The combat choreography is impressive.  

Elisabeth Moss as Cecilia Kass, being kept a virtual prisoner in the lush oceanfront home of her obsessive, brilliant-scientist boyfriend, Adrian (Oliver Jackson-Cohen). Cecilia has finally decided to stand up to him.When she makes a desperate dash to freedom in the middle of the night, you’re introduced to the strong sound design that makes the tense elements in this film so effective.

Little, subtle sounds like the waves crashing outside on the beach are contrasted with Kate’s nervous breathing and then punctuated with the shock of a kicked metal dog bowl. The sound transforms these little mundane instances into white knuckle moments. Long, low bellowing sounds come out of silence as she tries to be silent looking for signs of her tormenter coming for her throughout the film. The music by Benjamin Wallfisch (Blade Runner 2049, IT, Dunkirk) enhances the action when there is not silence. 

Cecilia is aided in her escape by sister Emily (Harriet Dyer), then seeks refuge in the home of their childhood friend and cop, James, (Aldis Hodge- Straight Outta Compton)  and his daughter Sydney (Storm Reid). But Adrian is determined to torment the only woman who once spurned him and go after all those trying to help her. The supporting cast is good, especially Aldis Hodge as good friend and defender. Adrian’s brother, Tom, (Michael Dorman – TV’s Patriot, Pirates of the Caribbean), seems as cold and sinister as his sibling. 

But Ceciia is the desperate but strong woman who shows she can take care of herself. Moss definitely has a dark side as evidenced in her many projects (The Handmaid’s Tale, Her Smell). She is strong in this film, too. Her closeups show how she has refined, even more, expression of terror and complete disdain for the man who is bent on trying to completely control her. But You also see that the gears are always moving, plotting what she can do to expose her unseen foe. Whellan does not hold back from showing plenty of blood and gore while Cecilia and her friends are being hunted and haunted by her former lover. You see that Cecilia and James are amazingly resilient. 

There are several flaws in the movie which make some of Cecilia’s brave moves seem unlikely and the film a little contrived. Some of her methods of escape seem to work better than they probably should have, like the attic scene. And how did that cell phone magically appear in her hand to call an Uber? 

The structure, pace, sound design and camera work, along with the dogged performances add to the suspense which more than keep your glued to the screen. And just like the villain, there’s a twist you won’t see coming. The Invisible Man is a sight to see, even if you can’t see him.
