The Flaming Lips (Rock band)
Tumblr media
The Flaming Lips are an American rock band formed in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1983. The group is best known for its unique brand of psychedelic rock, often featuring complex arrangements and long, drawn-out songs. The band is fronted by Wayne Coyne, who is the only original member still with the group. The Flaming Lips have released 15 studio albums, and have won three Grammy Awards.
The Flaming Lips formed in 1983, when brothers Wayne and Mark Coyne started playing music together. The two were joined by their cousin, bassist Michael Ivins, and drummer Richard English. The group began playing shows around Oklahoma City and soon began to develop a following. The band released their debut album, Hear It Is, in 1986.
Psychedelic rock is often described as the Flaming Lips' musical style. The band is known for its complex arrangements and long, drawn-out songs. The group often makes use of synthesizers, samples, and other electronic effects. Coyne's distinctive vocals are another important element of the band's sound.
The Flaming Lips have released 15 studio albums, the most recent being 2017's Oczy Mlody. The band has also released several live albums, compilations, and EPs. The group has won three Grammy Awards, for Best Engineered Album (Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, 2002), Best Alternative Music Album (At War with the Mystics, 2006), and Best Recording Package (Embryonic, 2010).
The Flaming Lips are one of the most unique and innovative bands in rock music. The group's complex arrangements and long, drawn-out songs are unlike anything else in the genre. The band's use of synthesizers, samples, and other electronic effects gives their music a distinctive sound that is sure to please fans of psychedelic rock.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Nocturama
Klip ke skladbě Bring It On
Že jste se určitě těšili na to, jak vás nové album made by Nick Cave a spol. hodí do pohody a naplní vaší duši klidem a vyrovnaností? :)) A ono zase nic. Ti, kteří vytrvají až do závěrečné Babe, Im On Fire jsou odměněni patnáctiminutovým (!) nervním vokálním běsněním s nekonečným opakováním ústředního motivu. Pokud mne čísla neklamou, objeví se slova „Babe, Im On Fire“ celkem sedmasedmdesátkrát. Do toho všeho si přidejte více či méně harmonické řádění Bad Seeds v čele s pianistou a varhaníkem Cavem a na vnitřní sebezhroucení máte úspěšně zaděláno. A to myslím naprosto vážně. Protože jestli se bude nadále pohybovat v bludném kruhu sebemrskačského hořekování, nezůstane z něj víc než vlastní karikatura.

From Amsterdam To Praha
Vznik výběru From Amsterdam to Praha inspirovala spolupráce Indyho a Wiche s holandskými Ontoppadiz na písni V jazycích propletení a vyústila v internacionální projekt česko-slovensko-holandské hip-hopové komunikace. Holandskou scénu zastupují dále 7th Foul Nation, Royalistic, The Dutch Allstars, The Proov, Shogun a Mod the Black Marvel.

The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
Klip ke skladbě Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
Pokud vám jméno The Flaming Lips až do této chvíle nic neříkalo, vězte, že nejde o žádné nováčky. Historie kapely totiž sahá do roku 1983. Are You a Hypnotist?? je zase příkladem muzakové banality, která by neoslovila ani selektory supermarketových zvukových kulis. Zpěvák lká a kvílí, kapela povětšinou kýčuje : takový je základní dojem z desky. Muzikální škatulkáři hovoří v souvislosti s The Flaming Lips o neo-psychedelii, noise popu či elekto-funk-rocku. To jen tak na okraj. Ale vlastně je to úplně jedno...

Tori Amos - Scarlet‘s Walk
Klip ke skladbě A Sorta Fairytale
Jako výhradní autorka skladeb a interpretka se prosadila hned svým sólovým debutem Little Earthquakes (1992) a pověst potvrdila deskou Under the Pink o dva roky později. Následující léta jí srovnatelné úspěchy nepřinesla a tím více potěší její novinka. Tuto desku doporučuji všem hledačům melancholických atmosfér protknutých citem a upřímností. Aneb čtyřiasedmdesát minut hudby, která vám náladu rozhodně nezkazí.

The Flaming Lips - "Do You Realize??” (2002)
One, two, three, four
Do you realize That you have the most beautiful face? Do you realize We're floating in space? Do you realize That happiness makes you cry? Do you realize That everyone you know someday will die?
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes Let them know you realize that life goes fast It's hard to make the good things last You realize the sun doesn't go down It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round
Do you realize? Ah-ah-ah
Do you realize That everyone you know someday will die?
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes Let them know you realize that life goes fast It's hard to make the good things last You realize the sun doesn't go down It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round
Do you realize That you have the most beautiful face? Do you realize?

It all just seemed so forced and pretentious and goofy that I just couldn't take it any more, and now my feelings for them almost border on out-and-out dislike. Once the Dark Side and "Heady Fwends" and Miley Cyrus and limited skull baby nonsense started, I completely lost interest. That album just blew my mind (I still deem it a near masterpiece) and so began my brief flirtation with Lips-mania.which only lasted three more records. And THEN I heard Soft Bulletin and everything changed. Then I heard "She Don't Use Jelly" when it was a minor hit, and that song didn't really help the cause. I was sort of ambivalent about that release and never had the desire to investigate further. I first heard them in the early 90s when I picked up Telepathic Surgery after someone recommended them. The most frustratingly elitist band ever who dilute their 'core' catalogue with TOO much 'other stuff ' including material exclusive to releases so limited that it's almost impossible to become a Flaming Lips completist?Ĭlick to expand. Now THAT is a fantastic post! And it perfectly sums up my increasing frustration with the band. So my question is: Are The Flaming Lips the most reassuringly imaginative band ever? Released only on 8 track cartridge hidden in a banana hidden in a watermelon hidden in a cannoe which has been hand painted by those mysterious 2 new lips members who wear green wigs which is then dropped at random in the Pacific by a helicopter piloted by Michael Ivins. The very limited vinyl single releases that have fruit flavoured beer mixed in with the vinyl.Ī: USB sticks hidden in edible candy brains in edible candy skulls.ĭ: USB sticks featuring one 24 hour song placed in real human skills limited to 10 copies.Į: A whole new album limited to only ONE commercially released copy. The numerous vinyl Eps, many of which are further collaboration releases. (Don't have four stereos systems or the lightning fast reflexes needed to get four systems to start at precisely the same time) The Dark Side Of The Moon/Sgt Pepper/Stone Roses albums covered in their entirety whilst collaborating with other artists. I would like to class myself as a big fan, however. I now have all their regular albums and the recent 'Scratching The Door 'compilation, some older CD singles and the 'Due to high expectations.' Ep. However I only started to listen to the pre 'Soft Bulletin' and post 'At War With The Mystics' albums 3 years ago. Check out the videos they’ve released below, and see if you can make it through 20 seconds of OK Toilet without getting “Now I’m pooping in the toilet bowl” stuck in your head.Like many Lips fans i became familiar with them via 'The Soft Bulletin' and it's 5/5, 10 out of 10, album of the year etc accolades back in 1999. The album dropped on February 24th and is called StevenSteven: Foreverywhere. The song, ‘OK Toilet Bowl’ teaches kids not to be afraid to poop in the toilet. Their first music video was quietly released on YouTube nearly 8 months ago, but has just been noticed by TMZ. They quickly became friends have have been putting together songs for this album over the last several years. The two Steves first teamed up on an album back in 2001, and Burns has even toured with The Flaming Lips in the past. The group is called SteveNsteven and they are creating some remarkably catchy kids music that parents can play without wanting to shoot themselves in the head. In fact, the former Nickelodeon star has a band with Flaming Lips’ Steven Drozd. Ever wonder what happened to Steve Burns from Blue’s Clues? Despite the internet rumors, he’s not dead.

Alternate Album Cover: The band's album covers under Warner (Bros.) Set list: The Flaming Lips at the Greek Theatre, Aug. Photos by Miguel Vasconcellos, The Orange County Register. It’s almost as if all those balloons and all that confetti was icing, rather than the whole cake. The group has also fully renovated its tired set list, retiring (at least for the night) stupendous-but-expected staples like “She Don’t Use Jelly” and “Waitin’ for a Superman” and replacing them with out-of-thin-air obscurities, like the trancy but explosive “Enthusiasm for Life Defeats Existential Fear” (from a U.K.-only best-of) and the rowdy “Mountain Side,” dusted off from their 1990 album In a Priest Driven Ambulance.Īdd in a few of the band’s slower, more psychedelic numbers ( “Vein of Stars,” “Pompeii am Gotterdammerung”) and you’ve got a show with a bit of awkward pacing, but no matter: by the time the set closed with the life-celebrating “Do You Realize?,” the crowd had been treated to call-and-response ooh-ooh-oohs, audience-led karate chops and Coyne singing an entire song from the shoulders of a scary-faced ape. Other favorites, however, like “Fight Test” and Yoshimi‘s title track, were pared down, stripped of drums to let their melodies shine even more. His voice now reaches notes he once croaked through, and the band (multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd, guitarist Michael Ivins and drummer Kliph Scurlock) has become a tight machine rather than a loosely-hinged engine, thanks in large part to an auxillary player who helped new arrangements (like an extra-percussive “Yeah Yeah Yeah Song”) snap, crackle and pop. But the bold steps forward the Lips took at the Greek are the right ones to make right now, even if they are totally obscured behind celebratory walls of floating paper and clouds of dry ice smoke.Įmerging in the ball once again (pictured, above) and inviting members of the audience on stage (this time in costumes ranging from full-bodied sasquatch to sexy snow-angel to cartoon butterfly), Coyne and his gang have finally put more time and energy into the actual music, and it shows. 13 release of a new double album ( Embryonic) approaches, it was hard not to walk into the Greek Theatre Monday night wanting to experience something bigger and better, even with the addition of dance-rock duo Ghostland Observatory‘s pseudo-Laserium show and the very Lips-ish new band Stardeath and White Dwarfs, led by Uncle Wayne’s nephew Dennis Coyne.ĭespite the overall joy the Flaming Lips have exuded through tours that have elevated them to amphitheater-sized alt-rock stars - behind the rightly exalted albums Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots(2002) and its follow-up At War with the Mystics (2006) - their creative drive must demand that they bring their audience a new gimmick. And fans have been dancing on stage in costume with them for years, adding an anything-can-happen energy to an already chaotic live mess/masterpiece. Frontman Wayne Coyne (above) has developed better self-pointed cameras and more props, including his now-iconic blowup space-ball, which he uses to walk over the audience’s raised hands at the beginning of shows. Those baggies became balloons, then cannons.
#FLAMING LIPS VEIN OF STARS FULL#
For nearly two decades at the end of the last century, Oklahoma City’s Flaming Lips were an obscure psych-rock band known to a hardcore few as one of the best live bands on the planet, their weirdo songs enhanced by low-budget tricks like giving audiences Zip-Loc-ed bags full of confetti, to all be thrown at once.Īs the Lips have gotten bigger this decade, so have their shows.
