HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO AL JARDINE: The Wayback Machine lands on Summer 1981: I was flying from San Francisco to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to visit family and friends. While changing planes in Pittsburgh, imagine my surprise to see The Beach Boys entourage (minus Carl Wilson, who wasn’t on that tour) waiting at the gate, headed to Harrisburg for a run-off gig. I conversed with Brian Wilson, Bruce Johnston, Al Jardine, Mike Love, and Dennis Wilson. During the flight, they let me pick their brains about songs, studio craft, songwriting, etc.—my opener was to talk about “Celebrate the News.” Al was very interested in the landscape as we looked out the windows. It occurred to me to compare Appalachia to Big Sur but my mind drifted… 

Years later, back in California, I was demo’ing on the keyboard, thinking I was homesick for my native PA. Out of nowhere the line “I Wanna Be-in Pennsylvania” flew into my head, modeled after tribute songs to American places made by The Beach Boys. The final take was expertly mixed by Rusty Richards (Julie Miller, Brian Wilson) and features guest vocals by Mike Roe (The 77s). Meanwhile, Happy Birthday Al, and thank you for your years of bringing musical joy to the world.

SONG OF THE WEEK: “Meet Me at the Summer Place”—A “vacation of the mind” song, with summer as a peaceful place, a twilight refraction on discreet and gentle moments that remove us, emotionally and spiritually, from the ruckus of life. The title name-checks that schmaltzy but irresistible 1960 instrumental “Theme From a Summer Place” by Percy Faith (that track blissed me out when I was a kid). I was nudged into making this song after hearing Mike Roe’s evocative track, “Come & Gone.” It’s also influenced by Todd Rundgren and Steely Dan. On a cosmic jukebox, this would play next to “Crystal Blue Persuasion” (Tommy James), “Groovin’” (Young Rascals), and a plenitude of Beach Boys tracks.

IT'S INTERNATIONAL WORKERS DAY! STORY + SONG OF THE WEEK! “Workin’ on a Building” https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/workin-on-a-building-live-9-02  …For years this gospel song has been a staple of my live set, and I’ve played it with equal fervor in dive bars, churches, concert halls, and wherever else. It’s believed it came from a 19th  Century calypso work song sung by slaves in the Caribbean, and that crossed into the lexicon of Negro spirituals. In the 1920s it became popular and is now a blues-gospel standard, famously played by BB King, Bill Monroe, Elvis Presley, The 77s, Swan Silvertones, and other notables. I learned it from the Blue Ridge Rangers/John Fogerty version, which he drew from the touchstone 1934 Carter Family record—Oddly, A.P. Carter copyrighted it and added his writing credit even though it was already credited to Lillian Bowles and Winifred O. Hoyle (with slightly different lyrics). HAPPY BIRTHDAY JASON SHUMAN + CONCERT ON THE SOUTH SIDE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KB1hIVZ4Y7o&t=1338s 1/21/11 @ Emmanuel Community Church (ECC), pastored by my close friend David Kanski and located in South Avis, Pennsylvania—the US Postal directory inexplicably lists their address as Jersey Shore PA (across the county line), but I prefer "South Avis" because, decades earlier, my Grandfather Blair worked in the railroad yard close by + I have vivid memories of going to the elementary school (now a factory) across the street from the church. ECC hosted a series of concerts featuring artists such as Bill Mallonee, Pierce Pettis, The 77s, and other notables. I share this raw footage (glitches and all) as a "time capsule" that documents a chain of memorable shows I did with the great drummer-percussionist Jason Shuman between 2009-11. This concert also bookmarks huge changes in my life as, not long after, I went on an international tour with The Monkees and abruptly moved to California, uprooting from the PA nexus I'd been in since the 90s.
