I thought yami bakura was more angular/pointed with how his face was drawn, but then I saw your gif set of his duel with yami yugi part 4 and no, his face is just as round as ryou. Now I'm imagining him trying to be Evil with a baby face looking very pretty and I don't know how well that goes.
sdfghjk well tbh it depends on what animator draws him
the one you mentioned is from Michiaki Sugimoto and he animated Bakura in various episodes:
Ep. 65 for example:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He’s not exactly my favourite animator but he gave us some gems:
In Ep. 71:
Tumblr media
(pls get some rest look at those dark circles)
In Ep. 41
Tumblr media
In Ep. 84
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and more in my gifset you mentioned
The animator has a tendency to draw him “softer” (like all other characters as well, Jonouchi has huge eyes in this animation) and with more of a Ryou-semblance than other animators do. Like even in Duelist Kingdom there are moments where it’s literally Ryou’s face with just an evil glare, so he looks more like a mean Ryou than Yami Bakura imo, look at that:
From Ep. 35 :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is what evil Ryou looks like 😈😈
My favourite animators and their takes on Yami Bakura will always be:
Takahiro Kagami :
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And a very close second is
Hidetsugu Hirayama :
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
BEST expressions.
In the manga (and at times even in the sub but they are not that consistent there) they make a clear point that the other characters always realise when Yami Bakura takes over Ryou’s body. Despite Kazuki drawing them differently, also the characters around them go like “he looks different/more confident” with both Ryou and Yugi when they change into Yami-mode. I think the main difference between Ryou and YBakura is in their eyes. They get more slit-like (in Season 0 they even change colour), and he gets his “hair horns” and sometimes even pointy teeth. And he grins differently. But just like with Yami Yugi and Yugi Muto, I think there is an obvious difference. But still, the faces remind them of the original “owner” of the body.
And since they made quite a clear point on how Ryou is canonically a handsome guy, I just love the idea of Yami Bakura being literally that handsome lad going over to strangers, grabbing them by the collar and calling them “teme” like,, the rude attractive boy that he is <3

The Battle of the Animators! Takahiro Kagami vs Michiaki Sugimoto. .
Takahiro Kagami needs no introduction for me. He is one of the best animators that ever worked on Yu-Gi-Oh! He and Kazunori Takahashi are the only ones who use 3 levels of shading. Just a quick fact I guess. .
Michiaki Sugimoto has worked on Duel Monsters from the very start to Battle City (Battle Ship arc). His style isn't the best, but it's rather good to be honest. His animation is rather distinctive since he has done some of the most iconic scenes in DM. .
So, tell me in the comment section down below your thoughts on these two.

I gotta ask, Why Taichi Nakamura? I'm honestly not that clued up on all the directors so I'm genuinely curious. (also I don't like Ando's drawings for the most part but his exaggerated expressions and ridiculous faces are actually legit good and I love them ;w;)
I’m going to borrow this chart that Kotaku via 2chan provided to help illustrate why I dislike Nakamura’s style so much. Knowing the styles of the key animators is really niche Moonie stuff (so not being clued up on the directors is entirely normal), but it is a fascinating topic for me (plug plug). You may have seen another chart similar to this one, but this chart is much more extensive.
Tumblr media
From top to bottom:
1. Kazuko Tadano 2. Kiyoshi Matsumoto 3. Hideyuki Motohashi 4. Masahide Yanagisawa 5. Kazuya Koroda 6. Ikuko Itoh 7. Katsumi Tamegai 8. Hiyashi Kagawa 9. Shinya Hasegawa 10. Mari Tominaga 11. Miho Shimogasa 12. Masahiro Ando 13. Taichi Nakamura 14. Minako Ito 15. Takayuki Gorai 16. Shigetaka Kiyoyama 17. Yoshihiro Kitano 18. Michiaki Sugimoto
Okay, so, in row 13, notice how flat the expressions are and how the faces are overly pointy. Nakamura also misses out on the key to making Sailor Moon look good, and that’s drawing large, expressive eyes with lots of emotion. All of his eye shapes are bland (even the ones for Usagi and Michiru).
Masahiro Ando misses out on drawing the eyes expressively too, but he can at least draw comedic scenes really well. None of Nakamura’s episodes, comedic or dramatic, have anything visually memorable about them. I keep wishing they’d assigned the SuperS special to Ikuko Itoh or Katsumi Tamegai instead of Nakamura, because they could have made the Uranus & Neptune short look incredible.
Oh, and while I’m here, Michiaki Sugimoto’s style is also awful - extremely scratchy and off-model. Thank goodness he only did 4 episodes.

Suuuuuuper nerdy TS comes marching in saying that it's most likely Masahiro Hamamori then, since he didn't do any more episodes after season 1, but it could also be Michiaki Sugimoto, he stopped working on the series after season 2
Ah! You’re right, that’s the animator! Season one had a lot of interesting animators and styles going on, same with season five, but it looked good in the first season, not really in the last...

Who is your favorite and least favorite art director on the original series?
My favorite art director is Ikuko Itoh, but that isn't going to stop me from being brutally honest when I get to episode 5. Runners up are Katsumi Tamegai (Post S. Episode 42 was a nightmare), Miho Shimogasa, and Mari Tominaga (Even though Tominaga's had a few "off" episodes, I do like her style overall.)
Least favorite? Oh man Well, to start with, fuck Michiaki Sugimoto. Fuck him, and fuck whoever decided to give him crayons when he was a toddler.
Tumblr media
Look at those fucking, off-model eyes.
Tumblr media
This style is very ugly, and I don't know why Toei decided to bring someone new onto staff 15 episodes before the series finale. But they did, and I have to cringe when I watch these otherwise good episodes.
Tumblr media
Apparently this guy moved on to do art direction for Yugioh, both the original Toei version, and the more notable Konami version that actually made it to the United States... and well, we all know how beautifully-drawn Yu-gi-oh is
Tumblr media
Runners up for my least favorite Art Directors are (In no Particular Order),
Taichi Nakamura: (Who has been a staple of Sailor Moon animation for 4 seasons)
Tumblr media
Hideyuki Motohashi: (Who thankfully got canned after this episode)
Tumblr media
Shigetaka Kiyoyama: Letting this still speak for itself
Tumblr media
Now you might be wondering why I didn't mention Masahiro Ando? Well, that's because as bad as he is at drawing, his episodes aren't generally eyesores. They're cute in their own unique way.
So that's that

While I do not agree with you about Michiaki's quality, I love the fact that you know your animators x3 *fanboyhug*
Aw thanks. And I guess it's really just about preference. After all, most Sailor Moon fans agree that Masahiro Ando's episodes aren't great animation, but SailorFailures genuinely enjoys his style. So like I said, just a preference choice. I just don't think Michiaki's style suits Sailor Moon well, and I finally figured out why. The man went on to animate a good chunk of Yu-Gi-Oh episodes, and that's probably why I find those 4 episodes of Sailor Moon out of place animation wise.

[EPISODE] 191. Butterflies of Light! A New Chapter on the Horizon.
Series: Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Sailor Stars
Kana: 光の蝶か舞う時! 新しい波の予感 Romaji: Hikari no Chou ga Mau Toki! Atarashii Nami no Yokan
Original Air Date: November 9, 1996
Director: Masahiro Hosoda Writer: Ryota Yamaguchi Animation Director: Michiaki Sugimoto
Plot: When Taiki co-hosts a video game event, Usagi’s friends compete in a contest to win a chance to speak to him.
TRIVIA
In the crowd of female cosplayers, there were two girls dressed as Chun-Li from Street Fighter and Felicia from Darkstalkers (Vampire in Japan) respectively. Kae Araki (Chibiusa/Sailor Chibimoon) voiced Felicia in most of her Japanese game appearances.
Makoto’s game rival was wearing a shirt with “WE LOVE ANZA” written on it. The first actor to play Usagi in the Sailor Moon musicals was Anza Ooyama, or simply Anza. Two female attendees in the game event audience wore outfits like those worn by Anza Ooyama and fellow Sailor Moon musical alumnus, Ayako Morino, on the cover of their 1993 single, Just Combination. The pair had briefly formed a music duo called MOMO.
One of the characters in the game that Minako was playing resembled Ken from the Street Fighter franchise.
Ami’s costume was a reference to Roman god Mercury’s chlamys.
On the plaque that Taiki handed to Ami was an image of an anthropomorphic character that looked and posed like Mario from the Super Mario Bros franchise.

LASTS
Mercury Aqua Rhapsody and Jupiter Oak Evolution were both seen for the last time.
