I’m finally starting to make some headway in my ginormous backlog Kbeauty stash (Thanks, Not Spending All My Damn Money on Skincare!), so let’s talk about some toners, shall we?

CosRX Galactomyces Alcohol-Free Toner

As someone who loves a good, strong tingle with my skincare, this utilitarian spray toner feels like it's not doing anything, but trust me: it totally is. I love this as a part of a lightweight rice- and sake-based routine, and it layers beautifully with the Secret Key Starting Treatment Essence and its matching (yet poorly named) CosRX Galactomyces Whitening Power essence, which is a bit of a heavier gel than the Secret Key. It's good stuff, and it's pretty wallet-friendly if you get it from the right reseller (My husband wants to quit Amazon Prime and I almost had a heart attack tbh). I’m already halfway through the next bottle!

Be The Skin White Waterful Toner

As much as I love the luxury of beauty products in glass packaging, it's not a great option for a butterfingers like yours truly. This particular product is a nice, inoffensive toner that sets up other product layers quite nicely for daytime use. It is a tad pricey at $29 from Peach & Lily, however, given the size of the bottle and the overall underwhelming-ness of the product itself, so I will not be repurchasing. I’m also not quite sure it led me to a blessed world everyday.

Dr.Jart+ Dermaclear Micro Water

Technically a cleansing water, I know, but another fave. This stuff is a life-saver for my lazy ass, especially since lately my PM routine has consisted of a makeup remove wipe and a cleansing water before I pass out like the old lady I am. I know I need to get back to my regular routine—I'm already seeing more clogged pores, blackheads, and splotchiness—but the good Doctor J makes it too easy not to. 😅 This is another one where I’m almost all the way through my next package, and so I should probably just suck it up and buy the one with the refill pack too, because I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggone it: I like cleansing waters.

Aromatica Sea Daffodil Aqua Toner

This, along with the Sea Daffodil Cleansing Mousse, was a huge lifesaver this winter when my face decided to essentially shit its pants. It's a little better than the Be the Skin toner at $23 but still not very cost-efficient, however, unless you have a rewards code or it goes on sale (which nothing on Peach & Lily ever does, let's be real here), so I won't be repurchasing unless my face throws a shitfit again this winter, then BEST BELIEVE I will be stocking up something serious. 

I still have the Sea Daffodil Aqua Cream Gel moisturizer left, too, so I'm trying to see where I can incorporate that into a summertime regimen. The thermometer on my car dash display hit 100 degrees yesterday, so Lord knows I’m going to need something light and sweat-friendly.

BEAUTY BOXES: March Birchbox + Sephora PLAY!

As much as I enjoyed the last couple of Birchboxes, I've been feeling a little dubious of them lately. I like the huge selection of products they have, and I'll probably continue to shop there for brands like Dr. Jart+, but the March Birchbox pretty much solidified my decision to put things on hold.

This box did have two of my faves, sure, with the Dermaclear Microwater and Benefit They're Real mascara, but the overall value just isn't there. I blame Reese Witherspoon, and I haven't watched Big Little Lies, either, so deal with it. 

I can probably use this Cargo Swimmables bronzer as an eye shadow, which is what I end up doing with most bronzers because my pale ass just can't hang with them, but I'm not going to get much use from the Beauty Protector Protect & Volume product and the Everything & Nothing fragrance is nice, but I'm getting a little tired of Tokyomilk samples in just about every Birchbox I've gotten. More variety, please!

So yeah—this box was mostly underwhelming, which made it much easier for me to put things on hold for a while. What's more, I have a shit-ton of samples from all these boxes that I need to actually try. Like, as I was cleaning out my stash, I found at least two boxes that I had completely forgotten about. Which also says something about this subscription in that I haven't really gotten a lot of products that have become staples or favorites.

The March Sephora PLAY! box, however, was a little bit more difficult to suck up and put on hold, mainly because of the consistent value that comes in these boxes, even with the occasional product or two that I'm not all that interested in. 

March had a “Glow Getters” "Glow Your Own Way" theme, and to be honest, that is a LOT of glow to contend with in a single box. I get that people want to be glowy and luminous, because who doesn't fucking want that, but I can't help but be concerned that a glow moisturizer coupled with a glow primer (FUCKING PRIMERS, STOP IT) is going to make my mug look like a damn lighthouse. Glamglow is really throwing down on owning the "glow" side of things, so I might give the Glowstarter Mega-Illuminating Moisturizer a try on a weekend, but I don't know if I could really pull off a mega-illuminating moisturizer AND a Shimmering Skin Perfector all at once.

I'm not sure what to make of the Josie Maran Surreal Skin Argan Finishing Balm or the Verb Ghost hair oil, especially now as the weather is finally warming up somewhat and I'm already feeling some grease coming on. These might be good for some nourishing weekend treatments or a minimalist beach accoutrement, but I feel like these might have made more sense in an earlier, more wintry box. And I basically forgot about the Atelier Clementine California Cologne, which tells you about how much I care about that particular sample.

But y’all already know I love this sparkly-ass hot pink Big Bang Urban Decay VICE lipstick. I've thrown down on quite a few of these new shades and enjoyed them immensely, and this is an intensely fun, femme shade. I've pretty much always loved UD's color products since they wandered into my consciousness back in the 90's when I learned Gwen Stefani used Gash and somehow managed to get my mitts on one of those dangerous (and yeah, inappropriate) looking bullet casing tubes. 

I actually don't remember where or how I got those early UD products—remember 501, the bright blue denim eyeshadow with copper sparkles? Or Asphyxia, the light purplish pink shadow? And when the shadows came in little metal tins that looked like manhole covers? I'm showing my age here, but I don't care: I've been a UD fan for more than 15 years now, and I'm continually impressed by how they innovate and expand their product offering while managing to mostly remain true to the grunge-glam aesthetic they started with. Sorry not sorry for the tangent, either.

So while I was still conflicted about canceling after such a good selection for March, overall, I'm not the biggest Sephora shopper in the first place to really justify continuing to collect points for their pretty weak rewards program. I think that's my main point of contention with Sephora in general at the moment —their overall lack of really good loyalty rewards. You have to spend a LOT of money with them, just to get some special deluxe samples? Get the fuck out of my face with that. 

Ulta still has the best rewards program of any beauty retailer by far. I know I'll continue to shop at Sephora for Kbeauty brands I can't get elsewhere (belif, at the moment), but I can't afford to be trying to hoard points and achieve rewards levels when the rewards aren't all that great in the first place.

I'm getting the hang of micellar water as my first cleanse, but Glossier Milky Jelly isn't enough to fully get my skin clean. Since I'm very oily, wear heavy sunscreen and full face makeup, I had to double cleanse with Milky Jelly to feel like I got everything removed. I think foam cleansers are a better choice for me on micellar water nights.
