Staying warm and celebrating Jólabókaflóð, an Icelandic tradition involving the gifting of books on Christmas Eve and then spending the evening reading. Drinking hot chocolate is often part of the plan—mine might be spiked 😂 The book … wrapping up #kellybarnhill’s The Ogress and the Orphan, a finalist for the #nationalbookaward in young’s people literature. It’s a wonderful tale very analogous to our recent past. #jólabókaflóð #middlegradebooks #middlegradereads #middlegradefantasy https://www.instagram.com/p/Cmk5d4HMhlz/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Happy Book Birthday to Sir Callie and the Champions of Helston and congratulations to my friend @ez_symes_smith! This book’s message is SO important and I can’t wait to read it. Mine is running a little late in the mail (it will be here tomorrow) and I can’t wait to have it in my hands. Check out the description below, and get out your wallets, my friends. This is a good one.
 🌹🌹🌹

When their ex-hero dad is summoned back to the royal capital of Helston to train a hopeless crown prince, Callie lunges at the opportunity to finally prove themself worthy to the kingdom’s "great and powerful." Except the intolerant great and powerful look at nonbinary Callie and only see girl. But Callie has always known exactly what they want to be, and they’re not about to let anything stand in their way. Trapped in Helston’s rigid hierarchy where girls learn magic and boys train as knights, Callie discovers they aren’t alone—there’s Elowen, the chancellor’s brilliant daughter, whose unparalleled power is being stifled; Edwyn, Elowen’s twin brother desperate to win his father’s approval; and Willow, the crown prince who was never meant to be king. In this start to an epic series packed with action, humor, and heart, Callie and their new friends quickly find themselves embedded in an ancient war—and their only hope to defeat the threats outside the kingdom lies in first defeating the bigotry within. 🌹🌹🌹 . . . . . #pride #nonbinary #representationmatters #lgbtqiapride #middlegradebooks #middlegradefiction #middlegrade #representation #middlegradefantasy #middlegradereads #bookstagramming #igwritersclub❤❤ https://www.instagram.com/p/CktwXtKv6TL/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Here is a book that I will be recommending to all my 5th-6th grade students, especially those who speak both Spanish and English! This graphic novel is a brilliant, Breakfast-Club-style story of five teens who seem to have very little in common with each other except speaking Spanish (though they get lumped together by white staff, who assume they are all "mexicanos"). But when they get roped into community service cleaning up their cafeteria grounds, their initial clashes give way to collaboration as they work to help a temporarily homeless family who is living in a van at the back of their school. As the story unfolds, we also get to know each of the characters and their often-unseen strengths and challenges. Miguel, an athlete, is also an artist, but his father discourages his passion because he doesn't think it will lead to success in a country where the rest of his family has had to work low-wage jobs. Dayara, a girl with a reputation as a delinquent, struggles with reading and possible dyslexia, but teaches her mechanic mom English. Sara, a loner at school, is close with her architect dad, but misses her mom and brothers in Mexico and struggles with social rejection. Nico, who others see as selfish, is rich, but is also living in a tentative situation with his aunt while his parents try to extricate themselves from danger in Venezuela. And Jorge, a quiet kid with an academic focus seems outwardly successful, but struggles with limited Spanish and worries about his family, who is temporarily living in a hotel. Each of them feels a connection to the homeless family, and as they cooperate to help them, they forge friendships with each other. The novel is written in both English and Spanish, with most dialogue translated into both languages. It will be understandable to all who speak either language, and especially relatable to bilingual kids. Themes of being misunderstood, stereotyped, and trying to both fit in and transcend limits suffuse this book, similarly to Jerry Craft's New Kid. An amazing read! #weneeddiversebooks #bilingualbooks #latine #breakfastclub #bookstagram #childrensbooks #graphicnovels #middlegradereads #librariansofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CknsBRCOz0m/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Q: Would you rather have a million views on a YouTube video or have magical powers? Why?
A: We, obviously, would choose magic!
Then use magic to help us get a million youtube views on a video celebrating Black and Indigenous speculative fiction writers, and encourage readers to get the books at libraries, other indie bookstores, Sistah Scifi Book Vending Machines, and Sistah Scifi online.
With the virality of the video, we would pitch book to television adaptation production deals for as many books as possible to @Netflix, @Hulu, @PrimeVideo, and @DisneyPlus.
We think Hasani - master planner, youtuber, and protagonist of Wildseed Witch - would approve of our strategy!!!
Wildseed Witch, Wildseed Witch: Charmed Life, and Wildseed Witch Duology in stock! Link in bio: @sistahscifi | www.sistahscifi.com | https://sistahscifi.com/search?type=product%2Carticle%2Cpage&q=Wildseed+witch. Audiobook on @librofm.
Better yet, check it out from your local #library!
Reposted @froggyreadteach WILDSEED WITCH: CHARMED LIFE🤳
New book in this middle grade fantasy series alert! Hasani, a middle school YouTuber and witch has more story to tell!
After a summer of being the worst witch at a fancy witch school, Hasani can’t wait to get back to the peace and normalcy of Riverbend Middle where she knows all the rules and is destined to be captain of the Mathletes. There are a few little hiccups to work out—like how she’s going to tell her best friend that she’s a witch—but even though the other two members of Hasani’s coven have joined her friend group and her school, there’s no reason to think that eighth grade won’t be smooth sailing . . .
This middle-grade fantasy is a wonderful addition to our middle school classroom library!

The Secret Series Non-Spoiler Review:
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟/5 As you may already know from my reel, bookshelf post, or comments I make a lot on other posts, I absolutely love this series. Not only do I have a soft spot for it because it’s some of the books that got me into reading, but I reread it last year and they are objectively, fricking fantastic. My favorite thing about this series has and always will be the narrator/author (see second picture for example). Just like the sass and the jokes and the occasion defining of words in the footnotes: I cannot get enough. Like there’s another whole plot there (that - mini spoiler - ends up being tied into the main story). The characters are also amazing. Cass the young survivalist who plans for everything and Max-Earnest the puzzle-solver who is terrible at jokes but somehow still funny. The plot is so good in each book I can’t choose a favorite or least favorite of the bunch (unlike every other series I’ve read that usually at least has one book that is worst than the others). These books are like the definition of “it’s about the journey not the destination” as from book 1 we are searching for a secret we’re not sure if we will ever find, and yet it is never slow. You get to watch the characters grow and change, becoming more confident in who they are. And it doesn’t even end when the book is over because my other favorite thing about these books, especially when I was young, is the appendices (learned that word from book 4). I had so much fun testing to see if I was a super-taster, making disguises for the book (mine from a kid in pic 3), and learning the magic tricks. These books also have some really great full page art for each chapter. Not only did I immensely enjoy these books (this review might honestly just be a test to see how many positive words I can use to describe these books), but as a kid I learned a lot from them. I will never stop recommending these books to people no matter how old you are because I think they are something every mystery/adventure book-lover should experience. Please just read them. 🥺 #thesecretseries #bookreviews #bookreview #fivestarreview #fivestarrating🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 #fivestars #favbook #favbooks #favoritebooks #favoritebook #favoriteseries #favoritebookseries #middlegradebooks #middlegradefantasy #middlegradefiction #middlegradereads #thenameofthisbookissecret #ifyourereadingthisitstoolate #thisbookisnotgoodforyou #thisisntwhatitlookslike #youhavetostopthis #maxernst #cass #badmagic #badluck #badnews #thebadseries

@danysbooks has been on a nostialgia kick and reading a book from her teenage years, which really inspired me and I decided to pick up a book by my favourite childhood author, Jacqueline Wilson 😁 The Kiss is one I’ve had for years but haven’t read yet, and I’ll be honest with you, I’m having a lot of fun reading this. It has the middle school drama that I love so much in Wilson’s stories, the realness of the family situations and the slightly annoying but still lovable characters. Also, because I am reading it in Slovak and now I have a but more knowledge of language and translating, it’s fascinating to see the choices the translator made with the book. Have you recently read something that made you nostalgic for the stories you used to read as a kid? 😊 #books #bookstagram #middlegrade #middlegradebooks #jacquelinewilson #thekiss #childrensbooks #childrensliterature #middlegradereads https://www.instagram.com/p/CLe5KKzA0kg/?igshid=u79rndmqbr09

I was today years old when I learned there was no such thing as a vegetable. Broccoli? It's a flower! Asparagus? A stem! Spinach? Leaves! And a tomato, of course, is a fruit. The vegetable/plant part concept, as presented in a conversation between main character Annabelle and her new friend, the creative, friendly, and nonbinary Bailey, makes a beautiful analogy for the arbitrary categories we sometimes assign people to. We assign plants to an either/or binary - fruit or vegetable - neglecting that people can be both/and, more-than, neither, that identity is a mix of aspects - like plants, we have many parts. This book is one of the best realistic fiction works I've read this year, an exploration of identity, family, and the ways we get to know each other more deeply. When warm, funny Annabelle starts her sixth grade year, she just wants to make it through to middle school - but when she meets a new friend, it jump-start an exploration of friendship, crushes, and a new understanding of her family and it's secrets. As expected from Lukoff, queer identities are shown in rich diversity and nuance, in flux, in spectrum, and beauty- and as flawed, fully human characters who make mistakes, grow, change, and redefine themselves and their relationships to others and the world. I am so excited to recommend this book to my sixth graders in particular - one is already reading my second copy and I'm looking forward to talking about it with her! I wholeheartedly recommend this book. #lgbtqbooks #lukoff #middlegradebooks #middlegradereads #queerlit #weneeddiversebooks #childrensbookstagram #diversekidlit #diversechildrensliterature #windowsandmirrors #librariansofinstagram #librariansfollowlibrarians #teacherlibrarian #schoollibrarian #teachersofInstagram #teachersfollowteachers #queer #family #characterdevelopment #identity #inclusivebooks https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci5MVddui4B/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
