The Secret Series Non-Spoiler Review:
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟/5 As you may already know from my reel, bookshelf post, or comments I make a lot on other posts, I absolutely love this series. Not only do I have a soft spot for it because it’s some of the books that got me into reading, but I reread it last year and they are objectively, fricking fantastic. My favorite thing about this series has and always will be the narrator/author (see second picture for example). Just like the sass and the jokes and the occasion defining of words in the footnotes: I cannot get enough. Like there’s another whole plot there (that - mini spoiler - ends up being tied into the main story). The characters are also amazing. Cass the young survivalist who plans for everything and Max-Earnest the puzzle-solver who is terrible at jokes but somehow still funny. The plot is so good in each book I can’t choose a favorite or least favorite of the bunch (unlike every other series I’ve read that usually at least has one book that is worst than the others). These books are like the definition of “it’s about the journey not the destination” as from book 1 we are searching for a secret we’re not sure if we will ever find, and yet it is never slow. You get to watch the characters grow and change, becoming more confident in who they are. And it doesn’t even end when the book is over because my other favorite thing about these books, especially when I was young, is the appendices (learned that word from book 4). I had so much fun testing to see if I was a super-taster, making disguises for the book (mine from a kid in pic 3), and learning the magic tricks. These books also have some really great full page art for each chapter. Not only did I immensely enjoy these books (this review might honestly just be a test to see how many positive words I can use to describe these books), but as a kid I learned a lot from them. I will never stop recommending these books to people no matter how old you are because I think they are something every mystery/adventure book-lover should experience. Please just read them. 🥺 #thesecretseries #bookreviews #bookreview #fivestarreview #fivestarrating🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 #fivestars #favbook #favbooks #favoritebooks #favoritebook #favoriteseries #favoritebookseries #middlegradebooks #middlegradefantasy #middlegradefiction #middlegradereads #thenameofthisbookissecret #ifyourereadingthisitstoolate #thisbookisnotgoodforyou #thisisntwhatitlookslike #youhavetostopthis #maxernst #cass #badmagic #badluck #badnews #thebadseries

The Name of This Book is Secret by Pseudonymous Bosch
Tumblr media
Okay, who DOESN’T want to read a book who's literal title says the title is a secret? And who’s author’s name is clearly a pseudonym - USING the word “pseudonym” itself? Ah yes, clever turns of phrase and satirical humor is truly a way into my heart. Perhaps it’s just me, but read on my friends, and decide for yourselves!
Cass and Max-Ernest are nothing alike.
Max-Ernest is small for his age. He talks non-stop and always tells jokes. He is thoughtful and logical. He likes to study and think things through. He lives in a divided household - quite literally. His parents each live on separate halves and are determined to find out what “condition” he has - or rather what makes him so hyper. He cuts every hair on his head the same length because he “doesn’t like to favor one hair over another.” He is used to being teased and ridiculed and having his lunch stolen, yet he never lets what other people say upset him.
Cass, on the other hand, has a wild imagination. She considers herself a survivalist in training, lugging around a backpack she has filled to the brim with every piece of survival gear imaginable. She does this because, well, supposedly her father was killed by lightning, except he wasn't, so it's not really an excuse. Cass cares very little about her looks or her general appearance except for one thing. She always attempts to cover her small, elfin-like ears, which have a tendency to turn bright red when she is embarrassed or less than truthful.
Honestly, the two friends are a match made in heaven.
So our book begins. An estate agent investigating a dead magician’s house finds a box labelled “a symphony of smells” and gives it to Cass’s grandfathers who investigates strange and mystifying objects, much to Cass’s mother’s dismay. Cass lets her new friend, Max-Ernest, in on the mystery and they begin to work out the mystery of the smells and look around the dead magician’s house. It is whilst they are in the house that they find a secret belonging to the dead magician but have to escape from a young couple who are looking around the house. The story progresses and our young friends find themselves in all sorts of danger. Will they both survive? Will they be able to rescue a missing classmate? Will they be able to discover the mystery of the dead magician?
ALRIGHT, so. Like I already said, how can you not want to read this book? If the title and the name of the book doesn’t make you want to read it, perhaps the inscription on the back page will draw you in:
WARNING: Do not read this book!
That right there is a challenge if I ever heard one. Don’t you just feel like you have to read it now?
This book is quirky, funny, and clever. The plot holds you spellbound as you fly through the pages. Both Cass and Max-Ernest (who was given this rather - how should I say it? - interesting name because his two parents just can’t agree on anything, included what to name their child) fascinate and captivate our affections. Sure, Max-Ernest talks and talks and talks and talks and talks and talks and....you get the picture. And sure, Cass may be a sliiiiight downer with her obsession with survival gear and her affinity to predict doom. However, the two of them truly grow throughout the course of the book, and they learn about the true meaning of loyalty, bravery and friendship.
All in all, this book is a quick and fun read.  But after you finish it, be sure to keep the secret!

It’s funny how Pseudonymous Bosch said “it’s a good idea to forget everything you read as soon as you read it” in The Name of this Books is Secret and I LITERALLY forgot what the story was about after a month
