A fake encampment was created at Queens College by CBS for the show FBI: Most Wanted on Monday (22 Jul). For clarification, the first two photos (with the fake tents and fake broken windows) are staged; the last two photos (with the person in the paramedic jacket and the placards) are of the real counterprotest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pro-Palestine advocates are criticizing Queens College, a school of the City University of New York (CUNY), for hosting a two-day TV production involving a prop protest encampment following an administrative crackdown on students for their Gaza advocacy efforts earlier this year.  The imitation campsite, consisting of multicolored tents and signs featuring ambiguous environmental protest language and deliberately misspelled words, is part of an ongoing shoot for CBS’s FBI: Most Wanted, a television series by Wolf Entertainment. According to an email sent by Queens College to community members, shared on X by Within Our Lifetime (WOL) organizer Nerdeen Kiswani, the mock encampment would feature “signage and branding for a fictitious university”; a “chase and arrest scene”; and a staged set with tents, firecrackers, and smoke effects. In response to Hyperallergic’s request for comment, a Queens College representative stated that the school “is often the site of television and film shoots by reputable production companies and media outlets.”
“The campus community was advised in advance of the anticipated media shoot parameters, including the fact that the episode would focus on a climate change/environmental issue protest at a fictitious college,” the spokesperson said, adding that filming was completed today before noon.
Yesterday, July 22, the shoot was the focus of at least two actions led by pro-Palestine groups WOL, CUNY for Palestine, and National Students for Justice in Palestine. At Queens College, protesters alleged that their demonstration forced filming to wrap early, and outside the CUNY Graduate Center in Midtown Manhattan, more than 150 pro-Palestine advocates gathered to protest, joined by around 30 pro-Israel counterprotesters.
“We’re here to send a very clear message to the CUNY administration that we will not stop until they drop the charges and until they meet the demands of student organizers,” Kiswani and other protesters at the Manhattan rally said in a call-and-response chant.  “But instead, what does CUNY do? They rent out Queens College for a film shoot for FBI: Most Wanted, where they set up a fake encampment to capitalize [on] the momentum of the Palestinian struggle,” the protesters continued, echoing long-standing calls for the school to divest from Israeli military interests and sever its relations with all Israeli academic institutions.
Carol Lang, an assistant professor at Bronx Community College who was at yesterday’s protest at the Graduate Center, told Hyperallergic that she broke a rib when police raided the City College of New York’s student solidarity encampment at the end of April, arresting 173 people. “[The police] knocked me down, and kept saying, ‘Move! Move!’ but there was no place to move. It was just this really big crowd, so we all fell on top of each other and my knee got all messed up when I slammed it against the ground,” Lang said. Hyperallergic has reached out to the New York Police Department about the allegations. “The criminalization of students who participated in encampments to stop a genocide is comical,” a protester at the Graduate Center who asked to remain anonymous told Hyperallergic. They added that they were suspended from their out-of-state school for participating in a solidarity encampment, which was also targeted by “many arrests and many suspensions.”

THIRTY-THREE years on the planet and ten since Tatiana's been in the modeling industry, but last week was the first time she'd entertained the idea that maybe, this career wasn't for her. What was she doing, anyways, managing nepo-baby talent, whose parents were wealthy enough to buy them a shiny new modeling contract with Flash, but never quite enough social capital to get them on the runways, like they wanted? All they did was complain and squack in her year about how they'd overslept and missed their casting for catalog, because god forbid they appeared on a Forever 21 billboard and not on January's issue of Vogue. " Cassie — Ali Strickoff did Forever 21, and Cora-Lee Ang — or wait, did she do Urban Outfitters— " It didn't matter. To Cassie, it was Chanel Resort or bust, and was she working for them or for her? Tati had to bite her neither, I fucking work for Flash Model Management and I can fire your bulimic little double-zero ass whenever I want, and placated with her usual noncommittal hums of agreement as she shuffled over to the 28th St, dreading the mess that waited for her in the Upper East Side. No doubt Cassie had let the lettuce and midnight Chinese takeout containers rot in her fridge, and it'd be up to Tati to clean it out. All while Cassie ranted, and she'd be left wondering how it was that an 18-year-old brat could live in a two-bedroom loft in the UES while she was left to rot in her little Murray Hill studio, amongst all the midtown trash. It was all a tragedy, really. She used to share a place with her ex, Caio, and together, their measly NYC salaries managed to pay for a sweet little one-bedroom in the Village — it did stink of sewage, and she'd find the occasional rat crawling through her trash, but she loved the place to pieces. There was so much energy and creativity and art, but she knew it was only a matter of time. They'd been on the rocks for ages; Caio had wanted a family, and Tati had, for the fifth time, regained her motivation to work, and make something out of those little seventeen-year-old brats. It took a weekend away in Paris for her to come back to a half-empty apartment and a goodbye note, and then another whole week to realize that he was serious about leaving her. That was three years ago, and she wondered now, if she'd taken up the offer to go back with him to Sao Paolo, she'd have a sweet little child now. She'd have a husband. She'd be a mother. The thought was enough to put a chill down her spine. Tati always considered herself a bohemian, what with her low-rise archival Gucci jeans and outlet Margiela tops. If she became pregnant, god forbid, goodbye everything she'd ever owned. Her secondhand Bellini couch would no doubt be replaced by some Ikea monstrosity, and her teakwood shelves would be strewn with flashy FisherPrice blocks and Made in China plastic crap. She'd seen too many women, even the coolest it-girls succumb to the monstrosity of motherhood, laughing away wet baby burps on their cashmere and milk-stained CDG tops. Dear god, the more Tati thought about it, the more she felt sick. The R shook with the shuffles of locals and tourists alike, the smells of Santal 33 wafting in with the tourists munching on street kebabs. It smelled like diapers and shit, mixed in with morning breath spittle, and she bolted up from her seat, clutching her purse as she pushed past, tumbling out of the train and over the first trash can she sees and vomits her lunch of Sweetgreen and espresso, burnt rubber and piss covering whatever disgusting odor emanated from her. She breathed out, standing up as she wiped her mouth on the sleeve of her coat, trying not to look at the tourists eyeing her like an alien with three heads and plopped down on the bench, pawing through her purse for the TicTacs she knew she kept for emergencies.

The westernization of Poland as exemplified by flagship fast food restaurants
Hi everyone! It's time for a full-on blog post, I'm talking paragraphs and shit. This will be another then and now comparison post, also set in Warsaw, Poland, now with multiple sections.
The First McDonald's
On June 17, 1992, McDonald's opened its doors for the first time on Polish soil. That day, the taste buds of 45,000 Varsovians would discover the hyperstimulative combination of the Big Mac, French fries, and fountain Coca-Cola, the American counterpart of a traditional meal of kotlet mielony (frikadelle), ziemniaczki (potatoes), and kompot (homemade juice). At 8 AM, the ribbon was cut by Jacek Kuroń, the Minister of Labor and Social Policy, who was asked to be present in exchange for a donation from the company to the impoverished children of Poland. Also in attendance were cultural figures such as the coach of the Polish soccer team, Kazimierz Górski, and poet Agnieszka Osiecka. The opening and the fanfare surrounding it was as much a celebration of Polish culture as American culture. The building which housed the restaurant was located on the facade of the Sezam department store, a staple of the communist era, providing a juxtaposition of life in the Soviet Bloc and in the West.
Tumblr media
Above is the restaurant the day of its opening, and below is the modernist building shortly before being demolished and after its shuttering in 2014.
Tumblr media
The location of the fast food joint is at the corner of Świętokrzyska and Marszałkowska streets, two main thoroughfares in midtown Warsaw. Following the closure of the seminal McDonald's, a new restaurant was opened just slightly east of its forebearer. Below is a comparison of the locations, with the emblematic Palace of Culture and Learning in the background of both photos, the latter photo being taken in May 2023.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The department store was replaced by an L-shaped high rise building visible to the right of the present-day McDonald's, with Sezam still occupying the ground floors. The replacement McDonald's is not as grandiose as the original; however, these days one can walk several hundred meters in any direction and come across another one of the company's franchises, which now number 517 in Poland.
The Stillborn Taco Bell
A while back I posted photos from the 90s of an ultra-rare combination Pizza Hut/Taco Bell/KFC restaurant in the center of Poland's capital. These are likely the only images, on the surface web at least, of the lone Taco Bell which operated for merely a few months in the country, according to PortalSpozywczy.pl. Evidently, the chain's offering didn't quite align with the market's tastes. Still, memories of the restaurant's presence live on online, with a dormant Facebook group pleading for its return to Poland. A Reddit post links to an article about Taco Bell's unsuccessful entry into Central Europe, with commenters reasoning that currency exchange rates in a nascent free market economy made fast food a luxury for consumers, and that the Polish customer simply deemed Tex-Mex adjacent food too exotic, especially when compared to the already unfamiliar offerings of hamburgers, pizza, and fried chicken by competitors.
While visiting the city for a few days, I decided to photograph the site to contrast between 30 years ago and now, as I did with the site of the first McDonald's. Below on the left is the restaurant pictured in 1993, while in the center, the site in 2023. I tried to take the photo on the right from the same vantage point as the 90s image, but the frame isn't quite identical since the lens of my iPhone SE camera doesn't have as wide of an angle. Also, it appears that the restaurants’ signs have been moved back, rendering them not visible from where the photographer was standing in 1993.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Below on the left is the second of the two rare photos, showing the northwest corner of the building. On the right is my recreation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For some context, the restaurants only occupy the ground floor of the building. It was built as one of Warsaw's handful of pavilions, which were meant to showcase cultural exhibits and provide a space for various expositions. Built in 1968, the complex bears the name "Zodiak", and remains a venue for architectural exhibitions and events, itself a post-war modernist structure. The astrological theme is currently slightly subdued, as the original pavilion featured a neon map of constellations on the building's facade, and a cosmic-inspired mosaic, which was replicated in the renovated building as pictured below.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Back to the fast food chains. The most obvious difference is the erasure of the Pizza Hut and its replacement with a Starbucks café. The pizzeria was relegated away from the street and toward the interior of the block. Gone are the branded trash cans and tiled enclosures, which were cleared to make way for Starbucks' tables and umbrellas. It's clear that Pizza Hut was running the show here thirty years ago, having prime frontage and dominant branding in the complex. Burger King has also invaded Yum! Brands' former fort, now nestled between the still-strong KFC and the Pizza Hut that let itself go. Today, just like thirty years ago, this site is still an example of an old order public institution, here an exhibition space for architecture and design, coexisting side by side with iconic American foodservice brands.
Communism to Capitalism: the Failed Attempt to Convert a Socialist-Nationalist Symbol into an Outpost of America's Largest Export
A similarly famous pavilion to Zodiak in the capital is the nearby Cepelia, which was constructed in 1966 to house a gift shop with the purpose of "solidify[ing] the rural identity of [Poland as] a socialist nation." That's a tall order for patterned mugs, kitchen towels, and woven baskets, but the store was a staple of Warsaw until May 2019, when it closed as a result of the building being sold. The ownership of the building was privatized following the creation of the Third Republic in 1989, and the company which owned the pavilion had been in a state of bankruptcy ever since, while the company which operated the store became the spiritual successor to the brand Cepelia in a schism of sorts, still profitably in charge. Before the closure even took place, McDonald's proposed the construction of a new restaurant in honor of the original vision of Cepelia's architect, Zygmunt Stępiński, after the land's change of hands to a new developer. The fast food giant went as far as saying that the design would go beyond this dream, because building technology had advanced between 1966 and the modern day in such a way that even more remarkable architectural features could be added. However, in 2022, it was announced that the redevelopment into a McDonald's would not take place at the request of the Masovian voivodeship's historical commission. The future of the pavilion remains unclear; meanwhile, McDonald's has not had a true flagship location in Poland since 2014.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Above, from left to right: Cepelia pictured in 1971 in the evening, Cepelia pictured in 2019 with its architectural elements obscured by advertising, and a rendering of the McDonald's which was to replace the pavilion while replicating its original distinguished design.
Fast Food Ephemera: Taco Bell's Free Drink Coupon
Back to Taco Bell. While researching more about its Polish presence, I found a photo of a coupon for a free medium drink with the purchase of any combo posted by a Reddit user.
Tumblr media
I figured I could exclude it from this deep dive into the world of Polish fast food, as it didn't add much value to the analysis. That is, until I looked at the bottom of the coupon and noticed its expiration was at the end of March 1997. This shattered my view of the world, to put it hyperbolically. It was my understanding that Taco Bell was only around for a few months in 1993! This is the historical consensus at least. The only explanation for this could be that the coupon was simply valid for a few years instead of the standard few months, as the chain saw a bright future ahead for itself in Poland. Also, since we're here already, it's interesting that, at least in this promotional material, the brand emphasized its vegetarian offering, perhaps since all of its competitors served beef or chicken as their core products. This is the only piece of ephemera I could find online for Taco Bell's Polish presence, but the failure of Taco Bell in the 90s reminded me of the double failure of Dunkin' Donuts (now just Dunkin') in Poland. Buckle in for some more franchise lore.
Dunkin' Pączki?
The coffee chain operated in Poland not only from 1996 to 2002, but also from 2015 to 2018, when the company attempted to reenter the market. When searching for traces online of the company's first presence in the country, I could not find a single photo of a Dunkin' Donuts branch, but something arguably more interesting: a dormant Blogspot blog devoted to a similar mission as this post. Its author posted four entries, all in 2006, and one of them was of ephemera from 1999 that advertised DD's offerings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Clockwise, from the top right, we have three pamphlets side by side advertising the chain's seven locations in the city of Warsaw, a brochure featuring photos and detailed descriptions of the product offering, complete with pronunciation tips; a flyer which brags that because the donuts are made with vegetable oil and not butter, they contain 40% fewer calories compared to traditional Polish pączki (quite bold of them); and an ad showcasing frozen coffee through iconic 90s graphic design. 14 years after closing its doors in Poland, Dunkin' Donuts came back, making the same mistakes, so I've included below a photo of a storefront with signage proclaiming its grand opening for August 11, 2016, in the city of Łódź, and below it a tweet from the company's Twitter account, stating, "We're coming back, and for good this time! :)" Foreshadowing at its finest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My take is that Dunkin' Donuts did not have the correct marketing approach when coming to Poland. In other European countries, the chain was able to succeed despite, or likely because of, its emphasis on donuts, since in those cultures, there was room for a novel pastry, and the rest of the shop's offerings - coffee and sandwiches, mainly - could complement the American-style donut. Dunkin' begged Poles to understand that their pastries are unique, but we just saw them as shitty pączki. When the core item, already disliked by the average consumer, is in the place's name, it's no surprise that the rest of the product range didn't catch on and that customers weren't coming in. Perhaps if Dunkin' makes another comeback sans-donuts, it may be more fruitful given the company's shift to a "beverage-led" strategy in recent years. As they say, third time's a charm.
Conclusion
Thank you for reading! I'd like to acknowledge that this shit took me literal hours to conceive of, research, do my own field work for, write, edit, and publish. I was almost late to my great aunt's apartment for dinner because I took those pictures of the old Taco Bell! I know my worth, and what I'll say is that this quality content that you bitches get for free on here should be behind a $500 paywall on ScienceDirect, I'm just so philanthropic I could cry. Now give me my honorary history, marketing, and sociology PhDs. But seriously, I don't know which niche of the internet this sort of thing fits into, but that's the beauty of Tumblr and its randomness. For the most part, I'm just writing this for myself, to put my thoughts into words and try to make sense of capitalism and globalization.

New York City Culture🗽
New York City is frequently the setting for novels, movies, and television programs and has been described as the cultural capital of the world. In describing New York, author Tom Wolfe said, "Culture just seems to be in the air, like part of the weather."
The city is the birthplace of many cultural movements, including the Harlem Renaissance in literature and visual art; abstract expressionism (known as the New York School) in painting; and hip-hop, punk, hardcore, salsa, freestyle, Tin Pan Alley, certain forms of jazz, and (along with Philadelphia) disco in music. New York City has been considered the dance capital of the world.
One of the most common traits attributed to New York City is its fast pace, which spawned the term New York minute. Journalist Walt Whitman characterized New York's streets as being traversed by "hurrying, feverish, electric crowds". New York City's residents are prominently known for their resilience historically, and more recently related to their management of the impacts of the September 11 terrorist attacks and the COVID-19 pandemic. New York was voted the world's most resilient city in 2021 and 2022 per Time Out's global poll of urban residents.
Theater🎭
The central hub of the American theater scene is Manhattan, with its divisions of Broadway, off-Broadway, and off-off-Broadway. Many movie and television stars have gotten their big break working in New York productions.
Broadway theatre is one of the premier forms of English-language theatre in the world, named after Broadway, the major thoroughfare that crosses Times Square, sometimes referred to as "The Great White Way".
Forty-one venues mostly in Midtown Manhattan's Theatre District, each with at least 500 seats, are classified as Broadway theatres. The 2018–19 Broadway theatre season set records with total attendance of 14.8 million and gross revenue of $1.83 billion Recovering from closures forced by the COVID-19 pandemic, 2022-23 revenues rebounded to $1.58 billion with total attendance of 12.3 million.
The Tony Awards recognizes excellence in live Broadway theatre and are presented at an annual ceremony in Manhattan. The awards are given for Broadway productions and performances at the 41 eligible Broadway venues. One is also given for regional theatre. Several discretionary non-competitive awards are given as well, including a Special Tony Award, the Tony Honors for Excellence in Theatre, and the Isabelle Stevenson Award.
Tumblr media
Architecture
New York has architecturally noteworthy buildings in a wide range of styles and from distinct time periods, from the Dutch Colonial Pieter Claesen Wyckoff House in Brooklyn, the oldest section of which dates to 1656, to the modern One World Trade Center, the skyscraper at Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan and the most expensive office tower in the world by construction cost.
Manhattan's skyline, with its many skyscrapers, is universally recognized, and the city has been home to several of the tallest buildings in the world. As of 2019, New York City had 6,455 high-rise buildings, the third most in the world after Hong Kong and Seoul.
The character of New York's large residential districts is often defined by the elegant brownstone rowhouses and townhouses and shabby tenements that were built during a period of rapid expansion from 1870 to 1930. Stone and brick became the city's building materials of choice after the construction of wood-frame houses was limited in the aftermath of the Great Fire of 1835.
In contrast, New York City also has neighborhoods that are less densely populated and feature free-standing dwellings. In neighborhoods such as Riverdale (in the Bronx), Ditmas Park (in Brooklyn), and Douglaston (in Queens), large single-family homes are common in various architectural styles such as Tudor Revival and Victorian.
Arts🩰
Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, anchoring Lincoln Square on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, is home to numerous influential arts organizations, including the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, New York Philharmonic, and New York City Ballet, as well as the Vivian Beaumont Theater, the Juilliard School, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and Alice Tully Hall. The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute is in Union Square, and Tisch School of the Arts is based at New York University, while Central Park SummerStage presents free music concerts in Central Park.
New York City has more than 2,000 arts and cultural organizations and more than 500 art galleries. The city government funds the arts with a larger annual budget than the National Endowment for the Arts. The city is also home to hundreds of cultural institutions and historic sites. Museum Mile is the name for a section of Fifth Avenue running from 82nd to 105th streets on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, in the upper portion of Carnegie Hill.
Nine museums occupy the length of this section of Fifth Avenue, making it one of the densest displays of culture in the world. Its art museums include the Guggenheim, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Neue Galerie New York, and The Africa Center. In addition to other programming, the museums collaborate for the annual Museum Mile Festival, held each year in June, to promote the museums and increase visitation. Many of the world's most lucrative art auctions are held in New York City.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art is the largest art museum in the Americas. In 2022, it welcomed 3.2 million visitors, ranking it the third most visited U.S. museum, and eighth on the list of most-visited art museums in the world. Its permanent collection contains more than two million works, divided among 17 curatorial departments, and includes works of art from classical antiquity and ancient Egypt; paintings and sculptures from nearly all the European masters; and an extensive collection of American and modern art. The Met maintains extensive holdings of African, Asian, Oceanian, Byzantine, and Islamic art.
Fashion🛍️
New York has frequently been ranked the top fashion capital of the world on the annual list compiled by the Global Language Monitor. New York Fashion Week (NYFW) is a high-profile semiannual event featuring models displaying the latest wardrobes created by prominent fashion designers worldwide in advance of these fashions proceeding to the retail marketplace.
NYFW sets the tone for the global fashion industry. New York's fashion district encompasses roughly 30 city blocks in Midtown Manhattan, clustered around a stretch of Seventh Avenue nicknamed Fashion Avenue. New York's fashion calendar also includes Couture Fashion Week to showcase haute couture styles. The Met Gala is often described as "Fashion's biggest night".
Parades
New York City is well known for its street parades, the majority held in Manhattan. The primary orientation of the annual street parades is typically from north to south, marching along major avenues. The annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is the world's largest parade, beginning alongside Central Park and proceeding southward to the flagship Macy's Herald Square store; the parade is viewed on telecasts worldwide and draws millions of spectators in person. Other notable parades including the annual New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade in March, the NYC LGBT Pride March in June, the LGBT-inspired Greenwich Village Halloween Parade in October, and numerous parades commemorating the independence days of many nations. Ticker-tape parades celebrating championships won by sports teams as well as other accomplishments march northward along the Canyon of Heroes on Broadway from Bowling Green to City Hall Park in Lower Manhattan.

Earlier this summer, I showed up uninvited at a midtown Manhattan music venue, where a startup named the Praxis Society was holding an event as part of a weeklong series to promote its flagship product: a free-market Mediterranean city-state the company hopes to build under the leadership of a CEO who, former employees said, is interested in fascist authors and occultism and has touted a book that argues Black people are intellectually inferior to whites.
Praxis, a for-profit corporation, was founded as Bluebook Cities in 2019 by Californian Dryden Brown and former Boston College wide receiver Charlie Callinan. They envisioned an autonomous enclave where the free-market dreams of Chicago and Austrian school economists would become reality, a place libertarians could settle without the tyranny of regulation. While the project draws inspiration from ancient Greece and Rome, Brown, the company’s CEO, said in a 2021 interview that its style would be “hero futurism” with a “neo-Gilded Age kind of aesthetic.”
If this sounds like fantasy, it probably is. But it’s one that’s captured the minds of real—and really rich—people. In 2021, the company’s seed round raised roughly $4 million, including from Pronomos Capital, a libertarian city-building fund started in 2019 with significant financial backing from Thiel. Other participants included Thiel’s close friend Balaji Srinivasan; Joe Lonsdale, who cofounded the analytics and intelligence company Palantir Technologies with Thiel; and Bedrock Capital, a fund launched by a former partner in Thiel’s Founders Fund. Praxis followed up several months later with a Series A round that brought in $15 million, much of it from cryptocurrency investors, including Three Arrows Capital and Sam Bankman-Fried’s Alameda Research, which both later spectacularly imploded. Emergent Ventures, another Thiel-backed fund led by economist Tyler Cowen and housed in George Mason University’s Koch-supported Mercatus Center, has also invested.
Brown and at least one other senior Praxis employee were interested in “this strange Nazi occultism,” one of those three ex-staff members said, citing the pair’s appreciation of Evola, who co-authored another book offering “instructions for developing psychic and magical powers,” according to its contemporary publisher. (Scholars have written about Nazi links to Ariosophy—an esoteric ideology blending mysticism, racism, nationalism, and antisemitism—and documented the SS’s fascination with Norse mythology and Eastern spiritual traditions. If you’ve seen Raiders of the Lost Ark, you know the Hollywood version.) Another of those former employees, also citing Evola, confirmed Brown’s interest in the occultist bent of the SS. An internal slideshow briefing staff on the company’s brand and philosophy presented Evola’s thinking on the four “functional classes” or castes, and suggested the categories should guide the company’s recruitment of new members and prospective residents, according to that former worker.
“When you’re hired,” one former employee said, “you get a welcome packet with 11 book recommendations. One of them is Bronze Age Mindset,” an openly racist and fascist book by the anonymous far-right influencer Bronze Age Pervert that warns of a coming struggle against the “enemies of Western man and the enemies of beauty.”
Part of the company’s strategy involves drawing participants in New York’s downtown scene to its events in the hope of bringing some on board. Succession actress Dasha Nekrasova, a leading light of the so–called Dimes Square set and a co-host of Red Scare—a once-socialist podcast that has taken a turn to the right—attended a June black-tie banquet at the Yale Club for current and prospective members. Thiel money has also directly funded downtown events attended by the arty set Praxis is trying to lure; in 2022, BuzzFeed News revealed the billionaire’s financial backing of the New People’s Cinema Club, which boasted of screening transgressive films without mind to political correctness. Jokes about sloshing “Thielbucks” among the anti-woke downtown set have become a meme.
In Brown’s vision, Thiel’s or his associates’ money wouldn’t just be going to film impresarios or their parties; it would go toward a city where both young neo-reactionaries and their post-left associates might have a hand in forging something tangible, something beyond a podcast or a Substack. Of course, Praxis hasn’t done anything tangible. But even if construction never starts, the company’s inroads with the scene are another vector for reactionary Silicon Valley perspectives to acquire cultural purchase.
The company has scoped a rotating set of possible sites for its city along the Mediterranean shore. Kunapuli told me they were trying to decide between Italy and Morocco. (I later heard Montenegro is in the mix.) “There’s tradeoffs,” Kunapuli acknowledged, as we looked at the renderings. Italy is more trusted by Westerners, a place where Praxis company leaders believe government and industry are more likely to come through on legal contracts, he explained, before conceding the same conditions would make it “harder to influence and change regulations and policies” than in Morocco.
A record-breaking heat wave and forest fires would end up hitting the Mediterranean a month later. As best as I could tell, Praxis didn’t have a plan to shield its new-Gilded Age city from such catastrophes. As it turns out, you can’t exit everything.

dirty boots, meet corporate ladder
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
past 50 floors of offices to streets pleasantly free of cars
midtown's not that busy on a saturday.
i'm introduced to a college sophomore who's already had 3 internships.
i learn she's double majoring in sociology and marketing
as she flashes me a syrupy smile more artificial than the lemonade.
she knows the rules of this game better than i do
tripping and stumbling over my own words.
why am i talking to her?
just for the sake of networking without connection?
i don't remember her name.
all i can think is i don't belong here
in stuffy glass houses with lawyers and marketing directors in pantsuits
who will tell them to give 120% because they need to hustle harder than the white kids with built-in connections and generational wealth
because that is what they need to hear sometimes.
because it's true.
i know it's true because i lived it.
just a slightly different version.
i hold my tongue when my colleague parrots the grindset
because i know the color of my skin will always give me a leg up.
but they also had access to things that i didn't even know existed
like these mentorship programs
and a community that accepts them
knowing they're not alone.
i think of paulo freire and the opposition to having his work read in a corporate environment
because it will encourage us to pay more attention to act with more solidarity, intersectionality, cooperation
when capitalism keeps us divided and pitted against each other in individualistic competition.
"when the deck is stacked against you, you have to make yourself stand out. go above and beyond to get your resume noticed for the content instead of having it put into the reject pile because of your name. that is how you win."
they will have to play this game and learn the rules until they have enough breathing room to afford bending and breaking them.
this is how it has always been.
does that mean that's how it has to be?
have we been tricked, conditioned to forget there are alternatives?
these glass walls are closing in and i don't know the right things to do or wear or say
i try to fake it until i make it
but i am reminded that my definition of "making it" is different because the standard doesn't include or consider people like me. there isn't a section in the store for "person with sensory issues and dysphoria aggravated by most professional clothing who doesn't have a desire to look professional in the first place because professionalism is rooted in classism, ableism, cisnormativity and white supremacy."
when expectations of how to look and behave are enforced through systems of hierarchy and oppression
no, i wasn't raised right, not by this definition.
maybe a different definition
one that values radical authenticity, curiosity, sensitivity
would be a more comfortable fit.
i am reminded that even when i try to fit in
to play by all the rules
there is always something that will cause people to say i "do things differently"
i am so used to taking it as criticism a warning that i do not belong that i will not be safe with the herd.
i learn from nature documentaries this will lead to exclusion and death.
i learn from the few remaining queer elders that silence also equals death
and we must be honest and loud if we want things to change.
trying and failing to do both is a silent killer
whispering that i will never be good enough
preying on my insecurities
until i have isolated myself enough for it to pounce.
i am torn and ripping apart at the seams.
i tune out of the small talk about private schools and luxury car payments.
this is not my world, and i don't want it to be.
but i know i am at the edge
a critical juncture
toeing the line.
i can't lose touch with where i came from
because then the voices of those still there aren't heard at all.
i would rather stare out at the city from this new vantage point
i have never been this high up before and i want to take full advantage of it.
they flock to me after the panels
my computer science ducklings hanging on to my every word.
they are also awkward and nervous and in search of answers
without knowing all the right questions to ask.
i tell them that yes, they can double major in computer science and creative writing or fine art or urban studies
and we want them and we need them in this new future we are building.
because the white and uncaring and unimaginative tech bros have locked the gate behind them once they got theirs
and they are no longer interested in disruption
because you will have better ideas than lazy new apps to shift old money around
because we are trying to break that mold.
i see hope for a better world in their eyes.
i remember all their names.
i did whatever it took to climb up to this point
pulling myself up by broken straps on mud-caked secondhand boots that never fit quite right.
now that i am here,
i am realizing that there is so much i missed out on.
we get used to the reality that surrounds us
and it was difficult to imagine a different way of being before i had access.
i know it's just as difficult for people who have always had this vantage point to imagine a better reality
one that uplifts everyone
one that does not pull up the ladder behind them. this version has kept them comfortable, after all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
when your identity is used as ammunition and ricochets around school board meetings
the personal is made political but somehow you must still remain professional.
when the bullet strikes true
these chambers rupture and spill over into each other.
my brain and heart and soul are not designed to compartmentalize.
i am messy and fluid and cannot be contained or confined
and my insides muddle together and burst out.
of course this was bound to happen.
of course my guts would be strewn across the road
on view for all who drive past.
i can't clock in and out of who i am or empathy and passion.
we don't even clock in and out anyway
and i am reminded when i call my dad after his shift at the chocolate factory
how much of a privilege this is.
sometimes he is working overtime
and the line keeps ringing from within his lunchbox
because he can't carry his phone on the factory floor.
sometimes he's out on a moonlighting job
fixing up someone's barn's electric in exchange for venison
or felling a tree on my brother's property
or volunteering at the women's shelter
or out in the garden digging up root vegetables until after the sun sets and his fingers are freezing.
whether or not he picks up,
i am reminded that there is always more i could, should be doing
especially now that i am here.
how can i best leverage this new position?
what's next?
what can i do more of?
what can be improved?
how can i climb higher?
i have spent so long being asked these questions
that they took the reins of my inner monologue and squashed any opportunity to settle for "good enough."
spurned onwards and upwards in perpetual motion
because i am afraid that if i slow down
maybe it's time to clear out the cobwebs,
make room for matters of living
rather than surviving and striving.
what do i need from you?
what do i want?
what if i can't trust myself to know the answers to your questions?
what if my answers are wrong?
what if what i think i want
is not what i need in the long term?
but if i don't give you an answer
(and even if i do)
how can i trust that you'll know where to go from there
that you'll act with integrity and compassion?
how can i know what your intentions are
when after a few drinks
you brush your shoulder against mine
and you say you will follow my lead
but i don't know where i want to go?
how can i trust that you are not a wolf in sheep's clothing
that you will not be like the others?
i want the chance to be reckless and bold and honest as i work through these things
and learn how to be a human being.
isn't that the point of being young and alive?
these things are new to me
please be patient
but not too patient
because i am trying not to take for granted
that there will always be time for these things later.
because i know by now that there hardly ever is.
i need to devise my own path forward
but i'm stuck in -
mired in the rumination of ambiguities
and it's hard to pull myself out
to the solid ground of clarity.
vision unfocusing
lines blurring
left to bleed out alone.
nobody is coming to save me.
i must learn how to save myself.
that is how i survive.
this is how it has always been.
i knew i couldn't last long within current structures and paradigms
as they are, as expected, maintaining the status quo.
but when we give ourselves and each other permission
to expand definitions and parameters
creating new ways of being, doing, relating
maybe, just maybe
there can be a place for me here.
i want to believe there is room for mistakes and missteps and oversteps
because i know they will happen.
help me correct course when necessary.
you may need to be explicit
because subtlety is not my strong suit.
i don't want to leave
because you're as good as they come
(at least as far as i can tell).

48th St and Fifth Ave, New York (1947)
The intersection of 48th Street and Fifth Avenue is alive with post-war energy, as pedestrians and vehicles navigate one of Midtown Manhattan's busiest corridors. This bustling corner, dominated by the towering skyscrapers and commercial establishments that define the area, reflects the rapid growth and modernization of the city in the aftermath of World War II. Fifth Avenue, known for its luxury shops and cultural landmarks, serves as a symbol of New York's economic resurgence during this period. The scene captures a moment in time when the city was solidifying its reputation as a global capital of commerce, culture, and innovation. The convergence of old and new at this iconic intersection represents the dynamic evolution of Midtown Manhattan.

Navigating the Waves: Unveiling the Latest Trends in Galveston Real Estate News
As summer fades and the crisp air of fall sets in, the real estate market in Galveston, TX, continues to ripple with dynamic changes. For those keeping a close eye on Galveston real estate news, the current landscape offers a blend of opportunities and challenges that are shaping the future of property investments and homeownership in this iconic coastal city.
Current Market Snapshot
The Galveston real estate market is currently experiencing a period of significant transition. Home prices have shown a steady increase over the past year, reflecting both heightened demand and limited inventory. According to recent data, the median home price in Galveston has risen by approximately 8% over the last 12 months. This trend mirrors broader national patterns but is notably accentuated in this picturesque coastal region.
One of the key factors driving this increase is the ongoing influx of buyers seeking a blend of charm, coastal living, and economic opportunity. Galveston's unique appeal—ranging from its historic architecture and vibrant culture to its beautiful beaches and recreational activities—continues to attract individuals and families from across the state and beyond.
Impact of Seasonal Trends
Seasonality plays a crucial role in Galveston real estate dynamics. Traditionally, the spring and summer months witness heightened activity, with families and vacationers keen to capitalize on the warm weather and school holidays. However, the fall and winter seasons also present unique opportunities for both buyers and sellers. The reduced competition during these months can be advantageous for those looking to secure a property at a more favorable price point.
Real estate professionals in Galveston are noting a shift in buyer behavior. There is a growing preference for properties that offer year-round usability, such as homes with enhanced climate control and energy-efficient features. This shift reflects a broader trend toward long-term sustainability and resilience, which is becoming increasingly important to prospective homeowners.
Emerging Neighborhood Hotspots
In recent months, certain neighborhoods in Galveston have emerged as particularly desirable locations. Areas such as East End Historic District and Midtown Galveston are seeing increased interest due to their blend of historic charm and modern amenities. These neighborhoods are known for their distinctive architectural styles, community-oriented atmosphere, and proximity to local attractions.
The East End Historic District, in particular, is gaining traction among buyers who appreciate its well-preserved historical homes and vibrant community life. Meanwhile, Midtown Galveston is attracting younger professionals and families due to its modern conveniences and proximity to downtown and other key areas.
The Role of Vacation Rentals
Vacation rentals continue to be a significant factor in Galveston's real estate market. The city's popularity as a tourist destination means that short-term rental properties are in high demand. This trend has spurred interest from investors looking to capitalize on the lucrative vacation rental market.
The rise in vacation rentals has also prompted local authorities to implement regulations aimed at balancing the interests of property owners with the need to maintain community integrity. These regulations often address issues such as rental frequency, noise control, and property maintenance, ensuring that the benefits of vacation rentals are maximized while minimizing potential disruptions to local residents.
New Developments and Future Prospects
Galveston is not just about historic homes and charming neighborhoods; it's also a city in flux with new developments shaping its future. Several projects are underway, ranging from upscale residential communities to mixed-use developments that blend living spaces with commercial and recreational facilities.
One notable project is the ongoing development of the West End, which promises to introduce a range of new housing options, including luxury condos and family-friendly homes. This area is also expected to feature enhanced amenities such as parks, shopping centers, and entertainment venues, further boosting its appeal to potential buyers.
Additionally, the city is exploring innovative approaches to urban planning and sustainability. Efforts to incorporate green building practices and improve infrastructure are part of a broader initiative to enhance the quality of life for residents while promoting environmental stewardship.
Tips for Buyers and Sellers
For those navigating the Galveston real estate market, whether as buyers or sellers, there are several key considerations to keep in mind:
Market Research: Stay informed about current trends and market conditions. Regularly reviewing Galveston real estate news can provide valuable insights and help you make informed decisions.
Local Expertise: Working with a local real estate agent who is familiar with Galveston's neighborhoods and market dynamics can be a significant advantage. Their expertise can help you find the right property or secure the best price for your home.
Long-Term Perspective: Consider the long-term potential of the property. Whether you're buying a home for personal use or as an investment, evaluate factors such as future development plans, neighborhood growth, and overall market stability.
Regulatory Awareness: Be aware of local regulations and zoning laws, especially if you're interested in purchasing a property for use as a vacation rental. Understanding these rules can help you avoid potential complications and ensure compliance.
Conclusion
As Galveston continues to evolve, the real estate market remains a vibrant and exciting field. From rising home prices and emerging neighborhood trends to the impact of vacation rentals and new developments, there is much to explore and understand in the realm of Galveston real estate news.
Whether you're a prospective buyer, a current homeowner, or an investor, staying informed about the latest trends and developments can help you navigate the Galveston real estate landscape effectively. As the city moves forward, its unique blend of historic charm and modern innovation promises to make its real estate market a compelling space to watch in the coming months and years.
