"Humans Are Forgetful. Please Make Sure You Don't Forget Anything."
Tetsuwan Atom (Mighty Atom), aka Astro Boy, returning a beret and umbrella to his creator, Osamu Tezuka (would anyone recognize Tezuka-san without his signature beret?).
This was one of a series of vintage Tokyo Subway Manners posters from the period 1974-1980, created by graphic designer Hideya Kawakita.

An art collaboration with @aakipple !! ✨
I thought it would be fun to draw Osamu Tezuka's Gesicht with Naoki Urasawa's Gesicht. (they're besties)

Wow I mean did everyone else in this (Tezuka) fandom just... Ignore the pro colonialism theme of Kimba... or Kei from Blackjack having an incredibly transphobic backstory....
Tumblr media
I mean literally making transition out to be something done of shame or being forced...
(I haven't even touched on Two Shuchi's, another incredibly transphobic Blackjack chapter.)
Even as a Astro Boy fan I always am hesitant when I discover a new Tezuka work I didn't know about because it's either "This is gonna be really interesting and funny or incredibly awful."
If any of you guys see this ask just... Don't come after me and read some more Tezuka stuff it's really obvious. I don't really feel like hiding behind anon.
Appreciate the support. I'm just a weird robot who grew up with 2003 Astro Boy, read Metropolis as a teenager, and then got dragged through a group read of Atom: The Beginning, a few years later tripped over the Whaley hybrids paper while doing preliminary research on what to write my paper about, and went
'Wait, fuck. Wait. Fuck. WAIT. FUCK.'
Like, the realization that Metropolis has the same exact 'hybrids bad racial mixing bad gender mixing bad' themes hit me like a fucking bus.
Edit: A large blog reblogged this and made a response that makes it clear people are misinterpreting this post. Please consider the original context, and my response.

thinking about how you can see the slow progression of the Astro & Tenma relationship through their hugs alone. thinking about how, in the first two instances, Astro is offering absolutely zero reciprocation -- leaning away as far as he possibly can without breaking out of his father's hold, his posture stiff and tense and awkward -- while Tenma clings to his son like a lifeline, wrapping his whole body around Astro's, crushing him to his chest and caging him in with a hand on his back, a hand on his head, and never even noticing the discomfort rolling off Astro in waves.
Tumblr media
thinking about how, in the third scene, the greedy, grasping kind of desperation Tenma exhibits on the previous two occasions is almost entirely absent -- his grip is visibly looser, allowing Astro to pull away whenever he chooses, and leaving plenty of room for Astro to rest his chin comfortably on Tenma's shoulder instead of being shoved into his chest. thinking about how Tenma is, for the first time since Astro's birth, finally and fully here in this moment with his son -- no longer fantasizing over the child he lost, but completely and singularly focused on the child he gained.
thinking about how quickly and readily Astro returns the gesture -- leaning in instead of away, pressing as close as he can without falling off the table, body relaxed and expression contented -- even if he can't properly reciprocate with his bound hands. thinking about how this is the first time Astro has ever received a hug from his father that wasn't soaked in grief and guilt.
Tumblr media
thinking about how Astro initiates the last hug -- eagerly, without hesitation, a smile on his face and his arms open wide. thinking about how Tenma is the first person Astro calls for, and the first person Astro reaches for, when he wakes up after the battle. thinking about how natural and comfortable the two of them look in this moment. thinking about how there isn't even a trace of awkwardness or uncertainty anymore. thinking about how you can see the slow progression of the Astro & Tenma relationship through their hugs alone.

Working on a small Pluto anime vs. manga scene order comparison for the finale, but not quite done… just like Urasawa is never done wrecking my emotional state lol. Felt like drawing though!
