US M79 Grenade Launcher 'Thumper' Gunner in Vietnam

Devido à sua facilidade de uso, confiabilidade e poder de fogo, o M79 tornou-se popular entre os soldados americanos, que o apelidaram de "artilharia do líder de pelotão".  O M79 viu o combate na Guerra do Vietnã começando nos primeiros dias, quando os granadeiros designados para as principais divisões do Exército chegaram pela primeira vez para assistir ao combate no Vietnã em 1965, incluindo a 1ª Divisão de Cavalaria, a 1ª Divisão de Infantaria, a 101ª Divisão. Recarregar após cada tiro significava uma baixa taxa de tiro e uma incapacidade de manter um volume constante de tiro durante um tiroteio. Isso levou a Marinha a desenvolver o “China Lake Grenade Launcher”, que foi produzido para as equipes SEAL implantadas. Para situações próximas, o alcance mínimo de armamento ficava no raio de explosão, isso significava que um granadeiro tinha que usar seu calibre .45. pistola ou fogo e esperar que a granada tivesse agido como uma bala gigante e lenta. Granadas especiais para combate próximo foram criadas para compensar, embora um soldado nem sempre fosse capaz de carregá-lo no calor da batalha. Além disso, seu tamanho significava que um granadeiro armado com o M79 não podia carregar um rifle, tendo apenas uma arma para usar em um tiroteio depois de gastar suas granadas, embora alguns granadeiros tenham optado por carregar um rifle M16. Os lançadores de granadas underbarrel, como o XM148 e o M203, ambos projetados como acessórios para o rifle M16, foram desenvolvidos durante a Guerra do Vietnã, permitindo que o granadeiro também funcionasse como atirador. O XM148 foi atormentado por problemas e o projeto foi abandonado. No entanto, o M203 foi um sucesso e foi padronizado em 1969; havia substituído o M79 no final da guerra, embora os M79s ainda fossem úteis.

Alguns SEALs da Marinha dos EUA e Forças Especiais do Exército no Iraque foram vistos usando o M79 nos últimos anos, devido à sua maior precisão e alcance em comparação com o M203 (350m efetivo versus 150 m efetivo no M203). O M79 teve notável uso limitado durante a Operação Iraqi Freedom, como na liberação de IEDs. Embora não sejam fabricantes do M79, a Milcor e Denel Mechem da África do Sul refabricam os lançadores de granadas M-79 com padrões mais modernos. Operação O M79 é fácil de operar. Para carregar, o granadeiro empurra a trava de bloqueio do barril no grupo receptor para a direita. A gravidade puxará o cano para baixo, abrindo a ação e expondo a culatra. O martelo é engatilhado quando a culatra é aberta. Uma rodada então pode ser carregada. A ação de interrupção deve ser fechada manualmente. Fechar a culatra fará com que a arma estará preparada para o diparo. Munição Muitos tipos diferentes de munição foram produzidos para o M79 ( posteriormente para o M203). Fora as de fumaça e iluminação, três outros tipos principais apareceram: rxplosivo de controle de multidões, de curta distância e não letal. Explosivo As granadas M406 de 40 mm HE (altamente explosivas) disparadas do M79 viajam a uma velocidade de focinho de 75 metros por segundo. O M406 continha explosivo suficiente para produzir mais de 300 fragmentos que viajam a 1.524 metros por segundo em um raio letal de 5 metros. Esta rodada incorporou um recurso de segurança de ativação de giro que impede a granada de armar enquanto ainda está ao alcance do atirador; ele se arma depois de percorrer uma distância de cerca de 14 a 27 metros. A rodada não armaria à queima-roupa e normalmente não tinha energia cinética suficiente para matar, embora às vezes penetrasse no abdômen. O M576E2, apesar do maior número de tiros, foi menos eficaz no alcance do que o M576E1, porque seu tiro se espalhava muito mais rapidamente e poderia errar.
