as someone from appalachia, i think about katniss’s father and his death a lot. i grew up in a coal town and i saw firsthand what a difficult and dangerous job that could be. but also how important it was to my people and culture.
i remember hearing the news stories of miners trapped in the mines. i remember when my best friends father got an awful injury after a rock fell on him. i remember that fear that comes with mine accidents, even if you don’t know the people inside personally.
i just think about katniss’s father a lot and how that accident must have shook the whole district. i think about the aftermath and the anxiety of the other miners and their families when they had to go back.
i think about what it must have been like for hazelle hawthorn when her oldest son had to go into the mines after having after lost her husband to them.
and i think about how the mines got shut down after the war. and how that is both good and bad. but that’s another post.

I was 7 when the first Hunger Games movie came out and watched it within those two years of its release. Rue had always stuck out to me. Rue and Cinna. One because they were two out of three black characters, and two because of the amount of screen time they got.
At the time I didn’t realize it, but now that I’m older the HG movie was probably one of the first forms of media I consumed as a child where a black character wasn’t a stereotype of their race and culture.
What I love about Suzanne’s writing is that at face value her black characters are rooted in stereotypes. At least Thresh and Reaper. But what makes Suzanne so much better than loads of writers, game makers, directors, etc is that her black characters have so much more depth. Thresh and Reaper come off as aggressive and blood thirsty. They also have a stereotypical ‘strong black man’ body type. But what makes them full of depth is that that is not all they are. Both Thresh and Reaper were aggressive to deter the other Tributes from attacking them. They were gentle, kind, and full of mercy when it came to Rue and Dill (and as we saw Katniss and the other Tributes as well). Reaper especially with how he cared for the dead in during his Games.
The sense of community in District 11 that is shown through just four characters is telling. In the movies when they rebelled. Or in the books when D11 sent their loaf of bread to Katniss in gratitude. When that old man saluted Katniss.
I just love that her characterization of her black characters actually hold depth. Especially as side characters. She could have played into ignorance and say that they only served a purpose through their death, but she didn’t.
District 11 will always be my favorite District.
All of the characters of color in the HG universe hold a special place in my heart.
And although Cinna and Boggs are only black in the movies, they’re black in my heart when I read the books too.

My wish for 2024 is that the hunger games fandom finally just be nicer to Gale. I don’t need people to ship him with Katniss. It’s just, he’s such an interesting character, he was 17/18 when rebellion starting. He had to work in the same coal mines that killed his father. He witnessed the death of thousands of his people. He managed to rescue hundreds. He became a soldier & helped fight in the war. He was utilized to help build bombs. His desire for vengeance and freedom and revenge lead to him losing his closest and oldest friend. His bomb may have killed a girl who was like a sister to him. & he’ll never know for certain He’s such an interesting and tragic figure & it makes me sad to see him reduce to the punchline of a joke.

a bulleted list of allusions in THG Trilogy or TBOSAS that paint a certain picture.
Tessarae is tile, but the Districts pay Tessarae to acquire extra grain & oil in exchange for putting extra entries in the Reaping bowl.
Mayor Lipp slapped Lucy Gray in public despite her selection as Tribute; Mayor Undersee purchased strawberries in private, & died.
Sejanus Plinth was originally from District 2, considered that his origin (even though his father allied with Panem) & Madge Undersee said, "you only go to the Capitol if you're invited," and wasn't (because she was best friends with Katniss).
Jessup Diggs and Lucy Gray Baird held hands during The Reaping
Coriolanus visited a zoo in his lifetime—Monkey House in particular—& by the 75th Games, monkeys are unheard of let alone a zoo population because animals had been eaten during war crises. Grandma'am told Coryo how Crassius Snow used to say "people only drank water because it didn't rain blood." Blood rain & monkeys were both in the Quarter Quell.
Arachne Crane was a mentor in the 10th Games & Seneca Crane became a Gamemaker. The same happens with Hilarious Heavensbee & Plutarch Heavensbee.
Seneca Crane had "sentimental streak," who let Everlark live, whereas Arachne tormented her tribute. Both of them were killed as a result.
Snow hates that Tigris may have to sell herself to afford things without money, yet Snow forces Finnick into the same prositution after his Games.
Sejanus covering the girl from D10 after her wound often reminds me of Katniss & Rue whereas Coriolanus & Arachne remind me of Peeta & the Female Morphling.
The question of cancelling The Games came up twice in history.
Both snakes & lizards are reptiles; both were used as mutts that hunted by scent.
Coriolanus made the observation that seeing Avoxes as half-animal mutts frightened him, as if Capitol kids were in The Games instead; Alma Coin suggested that a 76th Games be “with Capitol children, like Snow's grandchild."
"History," according to Professor Demigloss, "is about how to make the unwilling comply." (That seems like what Snow did to his prisoners in Mockingjay).
No vistors were permitted in The Zoo after someone was shot, like the Tributes in the 75th Games were no longer allowed goodbyes.
There are more, most likely, but these are ones that jumped out immediately

i’ve been thinking about coal mining in district 12 again and it’s really not surprising how small the population of district 12 is.
between devastating mine accidents and the health affects that come with breathing in coal dust- i think many people die in district 12 from coal related injuries/diseases.
i have to wonder how many people in district 12 were killed from explosions like katniss’s father or how many people were killed by other accidents within the mine. how many people were crushed by falling rocks and either died then or starved when they couldn’t work anymore? how many people died from flooding in the mines? how many families went hungry when their only source of income was killed or badly injured in the mines? how many people suffered due to runoff from the mines tainting their drinking water?
and how many people succumbed to illnesses related to breathing in the coal dust that coats the town? how many people suffered from chronic asthma or coughing that couldn’t be helped because there was no health care? how many people lived long enough to be affected by black lung? how many miners died painful deaths from lung cancer with no real doctors to make it easier?
there’s so much danger that comes with coal mining. the horrors go beyond just having to worry about an explosion. there are so many way that coal mining can cause lifelong health impacts.
of course no one in district 12 ever got to die of old age- the mines killed them before they could fathom the idea of living past middle age.
