The abolishment of Catholic school boards discussions in r/ontario has brought out all of the apologists.
In the last few days, after the revelation—nee confirmation—of the discovery of more than 200 children in a mass, unmarked grave at a residential school in Kamloops, Canada that was run by a Catholic order, the discussion threads in various Canadian subreddits like r/ontario, with regards to abolishing the separate, publicly tax-funded Catholic school board system, seems to have brought out a lot of Catholic apologists.
It appears that their tactic is to distance the Catholic school board from the tragic historical abuses of the Catholic church with statements like:
the education is better
the buildings are better
it's closer to my house so my kid doesn't have to walk far or I don't have far to drive them
the teachers are better
the school board didn't do this so whatever
it's part of our culture so we need to keep it
it's not a duplication of services so there's no efficiencies to be found by subsuming it into the public system
the Catholic church and the Catholic school boards are completely different entities and shouldn't be conflated into 1 big thing
and my favorite [paraphrasing mine:ED]: "I went to a Catholic school and I learned about residential schools, LGBT people, and it was all super cool and progressive, BS etc..."
It pisses me the fuck off.
