Illustration

When thinking of ideas I could do for this illustration project I thought about the other pieces I had created and when looking at the piece I done for the text brief I decided to use the same kind of idea except putting a more fun and simplistic twist onto it. I wanted to create a character that could represent the theme of retail therapy and some of the stuff I bought during lockdown.

I drew this piece completely digital using procreate and below showed the initial sketch along with the final piece. Overall, I really like this piece as its so completely different to what I usually like to do and as this was a mini brief and only a week long I feel like this was a good piece to just have fun with it.

Illustration

Lin Chen is an illustrator based in Shanghai, China. Her style is really interesting to me because of how graphic and bold it is and she manages to achieve this through using digital programs like photoshop. The way she draws is so heavily stylised which I really like as its something i havent really tried myself before and would like to explore through this mini brief.

I also really like her use of a limited colour palette in the pieces below and I think this really fits well with how simplistic her style is. Taking inspiration from her work id like to experiment with using a similar style in my own illustration as itd be so out of my comfort zone and I think itd be something fun to play around with.

Collage

taking inspiration from my researched collage artist, I liked that although photography is what she primarily works in, she incorporates elements of that through into her collages and so with that in mind I looked out photos I had from years prior that I never looked at anymore and decided to use these for my collage to make something new and more interesting out of them.

I started by bleaching these photos as it lifts the colour from the image and creates a cool blown out effect that I really like. Above, the image on the left shows the ones I bleached however, with these ones I went over with nail polish to protect the areas I didnt want colour lifted from. The photos in the right image I didnt use any nail polish on as I just wanted to completely bleach these and see what kind of effects I can get and take geometric from these ones. I had never tried this technique before, so every image was an experiment and I achieved such different outcomes each time. i’m really happy with how these all turned out especially with not having done it before I think I managed to get way more interesting photos than before.

I took other regular photos that I hadnt touched with anything and created the background with these as I thought these images would contrast when I collage over top with all the bleached images. I cut out pieces from the bleached photos that I thought were really interesting looking in random shapes as I wanted to aim for a more abstract kind of look with this collage.

I initially went over top with the other images I had to see if there was any way I could include these but they looked too bulky and I didnt want to cut these ones as I liked how the images looked on their own with the sections that I put nail polish on.

I then went over with the shapes I had cut out trying out different compositions and seeing what I liked more.

these images above are the final composition I settled on. I didnt overthink the placement too much however I like the look of how the angular shapes are mixed in with the more organic random shapes. I love the contrast of natural colours from the normal photos underneath paired with the bright, warm colour palette of the bleached photos.

the image on the left shows the physical collage which I then took into procreate to draw over. I wanted to show inspiration from the collage artist I chose to research so I raised the saturation and drew over top of the shapes to make them completely stand out. Originally I went over in the same colour scheme to outline and draw more attention to those areas however I experimented with duplicating the lineart and changing the colours so it matched and I absolutely love the outcome of this piece.
