Experience the Charm and Depth of the upcoming Dawnfolk debut
Tumblr media
Dawnfolk release for the minimalist survival city-builder game is revealed for Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. All credit goes to the brilliant mind of developer Darenn Keller. Due to reclaim the light Steam. Indie publisher Astra Logical and solo dev powerhouse Darenn Keller are gearing up to release Dawnfolk on February 13th, 2025. This minimalist survival city-builder, is all about reclaiming the light and standing strong against the darkness. It also has the kind of charm and depth that’ll hook you right from the start. Here’s the deal with the Dawnfolk release: it’s survival meets city-building, but with a turn. You’re not just managing resources and expanding your settlement; you’re fighting back against an oppressive shadow that’s constantly creeping in. Your greatest weapon? Light. In this title, light isn’t just for show—it’s also a resource you’ll need to explore, reclaim tiles, and push back the darkness. Each tile brings its own challenges. Want to expand your realm? You’ll have to take on tile-specific minigames and strategic puzzles. Since this is not just about clicking away; every choice matters as you work to create a city strong enough. Due to stand against whatever the shadow throws your way.
Dawnfolk - Release Date Announcement
youtube
The vibe is both charming and intense. The Dawnfolk release offers a striking visual style that pairs bursts of vibrant light and life with the ominous presence of encroaching darkness. It’s the kind of aesthetic that’s not just pretty—it pulls you into the struggle. You’ll feel the stakes as you gather resources, protect your people, and carve out a safe haven in this shadowed world. And let’s talk strategy. This isn’t a game where you can just wing it. Every decision—from where to place your next tile to how you manage your light—can mean the difference between thriving and being swallowed by the dark. It’s got layers of depth that’ll keep you coming back for more, figuring out new ways to master the balance. You can also get a head start with the Linux Demo on Steam. If you’re into survival games with heart and city-builders that make you think, the Dawnfolk release needs to be on your radar. It’s PC-first and launching on Steam for Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. So go ahead and wishlist it now. Be ready to dive in on February 13th, 2025, and lead your people back into the light, one tile at a time.

Refurbished Tech Wins: Why My Samsung S21 Setup Aligns with Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Refurbished Tech Wins: Why My Samsung S21 Setup Aligns with Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
When it came time for a phone upgrade, I explored all the options. From the Samsung A25 and OnePlus Nord to even considering a low-end Google Pixel, I wanted something that balanced cost and quality. Despite my initial hesitation, I even looked at Motorola devices. In the end, I chose a refurbished Samsung S21 5G. It simply made sense—it does exactly what I need without the excess. To complement…

He used to be a real “fuck the government, rise up against the system” type of guy. Danny Whittaker lived out of a cluttered apartment above a hardware store on the edge of a dying downtown. The place always smelled faintly of solder and secondhand incense, a mixture of burnt copper and spiritual defiance. Every wall was plastered in yellowing anarchist posters, pages from zines, and dog-eared copies of Manufacturing Consent. Danny was proud of his distrust — wore it like a badge. Corporations were poison. Politicians were puppets. His laptop ran an obscure, barely-documented Linux distro. He brewed his own beer. Wrote furious blog posts by candlelight. And if you asked him his five-year plan, he’d grin, light a cigarette, and say, “Collapse the whole fucking system.”
That was then.
The change was slow — so slow he never noticed the shift. Not at first. It began, like most rot, in the unnoticed corners. One morning, Danny woke up to find his browser bookmarks reorganized — every broken activism link replaced by business news. He blamed it on an update, though he couldn’t remember installing one. His cheap off-brand toothpaste had been replaced with something expensive and imported. A soft mint with undertones of basil and neroli. He figured maybe his neighbor had swapped it by accident. Still used it. Tasted nice.
The next week, his boots were gone. Replaced by sleek black derbies that fit like gloves. His jeans — once proudly ripped and grease-stained — had been replaced with pressed navy chinos. The tags were still attached. Italian. Pricey. He cursed out loud, swearing someone had broken in to mess with him. But nothing else was taken. No signs of forced entry. And when he checked his closet the next morning, the jeans were hanging neatly beside five identical tailored button-downs he had never owned.
People started calling him “Daniel.” Not friends — those had drifted off, their names growing fuzzier with time — but strangers, acquaintances, baristas. It was never Danny anymore. Daniel sounded too polished, too put-together. But somehow… it didn’t sound wrong. Not anymore.
His reflection had begun to betray him as well. His once-thick mop of hair grew thin, then vanished entirely over the course of a month. He started shaving it smooth, though he couldn’t recall when he’d bought the razor. His beard — which had always been patchy, half-grown rebellion — now grew thick and full, streaked with a touch of dignified silver. He started shaping it with precision. Sometimes, staring into the mirror, he’d try to summon his old sneer, the cynical squint he used to wear like armor. But it was gone. Replaced with a gaze that was calm. Certain. The eyes of a man who hadn’t just won — but expected to win.
The apartment changed too. Slowly, like it was ashamed of itself. The milk crates he’d used as bookshelves were replaced with smooth walnut cases, filled not with revolutionary screeds but leather-bound investment books. His mattress — once dragged in from a Craigslist curb alert — now sat atop a minimalist steel frame. Egyptian cotton sheets. Glass desk. A lamp that adjusted color temperature depending on the time of day. He didn’t remember buying any of it. But the receipts were always there, in his email, under the name D. Whitmore Sterling.
That name — the first time he saw it, he laughed. Some joke. Some spam filter glitch. But then it appeared again. On invoices. On credit cards. On his driver’s license. He tried to correct it once at the DMV. The woman behind the desk looked at him with blank politeness, as if Daniel Whittaker had never existed.
He started receiving calls. Not from his old friends — those names had all been quietly pruned from his contacts. No, these were financial advisors. Attorneys. Executives from companies with names that sounded like medication. He began taking meetings. Not because he wanted to, but because saying yes felt easier than saying no. A town car would arrive. He would step inside, and thirty minutes later he’d be shaking hands in a high-rise boardroom, speaking with ease about metrics and margins and scale.
He told himself it was temporary. A phase. He was gathering resources, learning the game to one day dismantle it. But the lines kept blurring. His company — NovaSterra Holdings — became successful. Very successful. He couldn’t say what they actually did. Mergers. Acquisitions. Something with green energy, maybe. The logo looked expensive. His signature appeared on contracts, dotted lines he couldn’t remember reading. But the money came. And when it did, so did the power.
He hired an assistant. Sharp suits. Professional smile. She always had what he needed before he even asked. She called him “Mr. Sterling” like it was a sacred title. And when she walked away, he caught himself admiring the polish of her heels against the marble floor — the way they echoed, like he owned every step.
There were nights when he would wake in his penthouse, sheets twisted, sweat beading on his temples. Not fear — something worse. The sense that he had lost something fundamental. But when he rose and looked in the mirror, he saw a man with purpose. A man who had grown into his destiny. And whatever fear had clung to him would slip away like steam on glass.
Sometimes, he’d pass a protest downtown — chanting voices rising in the distance. He’d watch from the backseat of his town car, eyes hidden behind tinted lenses. A flicker of something would stir. Familiarity. Not guilt. Never guilt. But recognition. He used to be one of them. He used to shout at buildings like this. Now those buildings bore his name.
Danny Whittaker was a ghost. D. Whitmore Sterling — bald, bearded, unstoppable — stood in his place.
And he had never felt more real.

Y'know, when I was a teenager getting into IT shit, it always struck me as odd, the way the old guys insisted on getting me into Linux. It just seemed like such a pain in the ass, and I never really picked it up. Its selling points weren't something that were a problem for me. I could get a Windows machine to do anything I wanted. Any reason to fuck around with Linux was like a junior high computer class training you on Excel. In theory that's a good idea but the reality is you are years away from needing this shit and it will be different by the time you do.
And now I'm an old geek who feels, I imagine, like the last guys hanging on to the cars they could maintain themselves. I couldn't rebuild a carburetor but I could swap spark plugs, change the oil and filters, etc. Because the iOS-ification of desktop computers is driving me fucking insane. Not just the petty shit like changing "click" to "tap" and "program" to "app," but the way everything is buried ever further behind an increasingly minimalist, dogshit UI.
My work computer "upgraded" to a version of Windows where you hit what used to be the start button and it brings up a menu of what used to be your desktop shortcuts. You still have desktop shortcuts though. The alphabetized start menu is gone. If you don't see it, you have to type a search term for it. Also it takes double-clicking on icons as a suggestion to run the program rather than a command.
This is the sort of enshittification you can only get away with when you have a monopoly and your boardroom is full of perverts who fantasize about being Steve Jobs while trying to give his portrait a rimjob.

VFS Explorer 1.0 is now available
Tumblr media
VFS Explorer is a new cross-platform explorer/"viewer" app for VFS archives, such as those shipped with Pathologic 1. Alternatively, it's an ultra-minimalistic, extremely niche bootleg of WinRAR.
It intends to be a simple, robust and intuitive way to deal with VFS archives that doesn't require you to extract the whole thing to see what's inside. For now it only allows you to list the contents and extract selected files - however, more features (such as previewing the files themselves and converting file types on the go) are in the works.
VFS Explorer executables are available for Windows and Linux. If your OS is not one of those two, VFS Explorer can also be ran from source code (see the GitHub repository's README for instructions - it only takes a bit of setup).
Download it from on GitHub
Should you encounter any errors or issues, or have an idea on how to improve the user experience, please open an issue on GitHub or message me on Tumblr!

On the 19th of March 2025, I downloaded the latest version of the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP). I downloaded it through the Microsoft Store.
https://www.gimp.org/news/2025/03/16/gimp-3-0-released/
GIMP is an open source image editing application for Linux, Unix, Mac and Windows. The latest version is 3.0, which was released for stable use on the 16th of March.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GIMP
GIMP 3.0 has been in development for 7 years since the previous release version which was 2.10. GIMP 3.0 celebrates a major milestone for the software, here are just a few of the notable changes:
A completed GTK3 port of the application and all of the tool sets
Non destructive editing capability
Better painting and drawing tools
Major HiDPI display scaling improvements
Faster performance boost with muti-threading
Better support for PSD (Photoshop) files
A new revamped light and dark theme set
Native 'Wayland' display server protocol support on Linux systems.
Native Microsoft Store app with auto updates
Lots and lots of bug fixes
See more here:
https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2025/03/gimp-3-0
The update also features the option to merge the title bar and menu bar, which provides a minimalistic header bar style to the user interface on Windows and Linux. (see screenshot below)
The theme and icon set can be easily changed in the settings and feature a brand new set of icons that echo the older style of icons used in older versions of GIMP up to 2.8 (2012).
Read the release notes below:
https://www.gimp.org/release-notes/gimp-3.0.html
3.0 also celebrates 30 years since the original version of GIMP was released back in 1995! Its first public release was 1998.
The application features a refreshed logo as part of its release.
I created a quick mock-up of Roger the Ragdoll using the layers panel for each of the graphics.
-
GIMP got its first point release for 3.0.2, after a week of being available. This version got auto updated on the 25th March.
Underneath is a small project I did involving layers in GIMP. The Beano comic characters included are:
Derek the Sheep by Gary Northfield.
The Numskulls Brainy by Barry Glennard.
Dennis the Menace & Gnasher by Nigel Parkinson.
Colin the Vet by Duncan Scott.
Little Plum by Hunt Emerson.
A gradient effect was added behind the characters.
Each image is shown in the tabs above. I exported the image as a portable network graphic (PNG) afterwards.
This release makes GIMP feel more like a great Photoshop open source alternative. For many users there is still a steep learning curve, however the overall experience feels worth it after 7 years!

is it weird to feel like you're living in the corpse of the world you grew up in? I know nostalgia is a slow and insidious killer if left unchecked, but just, let me try and describe this. I was born in 1998, I grew up through the 2000s and 2010s, particularly in the tech/video game spaces (go figure) and it feels like everything I used to know is just, dead now. My life used to be filled with how wondrous and new technology could be. Things had weight and worked with all sorts of wires and metal parts. Even the cheap things still felt like they were a part of it. It really felt like you were a part of something special when your hobby was computers. But I don't know about now. I don't just want to be sad about it all the time. I know that in the right places those bustling tech avenues from a time when the web was a place and not a monolith, and computers were appliances and not our entire lives, I know those still exist. But theyre so tucked away. So hidden under mountains of consumerist trash full of bad plastic and bad user design and no user fixability and just, I don't know. All the hobby shops had to close, or raise their prices so high they might has well have. All the old video games are owned by youtubers and techies that rip the consoles apart to make ANOTHER backlit LED button gameboy advanced that they dont play. The world I knew so fondly has been hollowed out and is now worn by black suits and minimalistic white and grey squares with rounded edges. I just, get sad sometimes. I feel like I was too young to have truly been a part of it, but I might also be too old to try and get into it now. Or at least too poor. I miss it. I miss those off whites and beiges, compressed audtio 480p video please insert disc 2 "why did the developers spend so much time on the UI and menus". I miss it so much sometimes. Everything feels the same now. Maybe I'm just tired. Maybe I should get into linux or something. I don't know.

NixOS Rice Journey
I've always considered myself something of a minimalist when it comes to function over form and beauty within simplicity, but there comes a time in every Linux user's life when they must rice.
Now, firstly, I want to acknowledge that @kfithen's recent ricing journey is like, 50% of the reason I went through with this (\shrug/ he had a good idea, what can I say?!). To be fair, the other 50% is the control and understanding that a good rice gives a person over their computer and environment. I want to know how everything works, and I want to be the person who makes it all come together really well.
I'm not really the type for flashy things or eye-catching rices / eye-candy (I've been using only I3wm for almost the entirety of my Linux history), so I want my rice to take a more subtle, simple approach. I use NixOS because I want my system to stay with me forever and only do what it needs to. I want to spend years optimizing everything I use until my OS reaches its minimal state. In the same way, I want my rice to display the elegant simplicity of nothing extra. I want some basic utilities and visuals that look nice, but aren't distracting.
Most of all, I want my rice to embody my own spirit, or at least what I strive to be. I want to put work into making something that does everything it needs to without encroaching on others. Ideally, I will be able to look at this every day for the rest of my life and it will help me feel secure in myself.
All that said, here's what I've done so far:
Migrated from X11 to Wayland
Switched to greetd and tuigreet for my displaymanager
Switched from I3wm to Sway
Setup Waybar to tell me what I need to know
Setup a custom desktop wallpaper (as opposed to the default Xfce wallpaper or Sway grey)
Setup vifm to view and manage my filesystem
Setup ivm, foot, mpv, etc. to replace xfce-given programs
Upgraded from NixOS 23.11 to 24.05
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A (16:9) screenshot of my desktop. There are no windows open. The wallpaper prominently features a modified Nix logo in the center, taking up a little over a third of the vertical space. The logo has been modified so that each of the six "arms" corresponds to a stripe in the trans-nonbinary-flag; the top-right corresponds to the blue stripe at the top of the flag and the arms continue down the flag in a clockwise motion (i.e. blue, pink, yellow, white, purple, black). The background of the wallpaper is a dark grey that is light enough for the black arm to be visible. At the bottom of the screenshot is a Waybar status bar. On the left it shows (left to right) the sway workspaces, workspace name, and scratchpad; on the right it shows (left to right) the system volume (with wireplumber), the keyboard layout, the free space on the root partition, the memory and sway information of the system, the local ip address and wifi-connection strength of the system, the core usage of the system, and the current time and date of the system. The bar is styled with the default styles (for now). \End ID]
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Another desktop screenshot. This one shows three windows open with the Sway window manager/compositor. One window, containing my home-manager configuration open in neovim (using the slate colorscheme), is the result of a horizontal split and lies on the left half of the screen. The right half of the screen is vertically split into two windows. The top displays an unstyled vifm, and the bottom displays the output of neofetch. The inner gaps of the windows are set to 10 in sway and there are no other gap configurations. \End ID]
So far, I've been focusing mostly on getting my system working again (leaving xfce completely left a big mark on my system, previously I was using Thunar and a billion other things I took for granted). I'm going through another terminal-based-stuff craze so I'm trying to do more and more stuff through cli and tui applications (flameshot -> shotman, xfce-img-viewer -> imv, xfce-video-player -> mpv, thunar -> vifm).
The only thing I've done cosmetically so far is the background. I wanted to get something that wouldn't clutter my screen if I ever implement transparency, so I didn't want to do anything too complicated. (I'll admit, my first thoughts were Homestuck, Lackadaisy, trains, etc., but those were way to complicated (save for some of the Homestuck stuff, that was good, I just didn't super vibe with anything)). I'm really happy with how it turned out though (the Nix logo is great for customization)! I think the trans-nonbinary-flag colors look great here and fit the vibe sickly. Also, it's Pride Month, so how could I not have something queer on my screen all the time?!?!?! (Well, besides Linux, and NixOS especially, that's queer already, lol).
This post is getting a bit long, so I'll quit my yappin' and end it off with a little summary of what I hope to do next:
Get some sort of transparency (what's the use in having that beautiful wallpaper if you can't see it, plus the background has a low enough complexity that transparency will actually work well)
Set some standards for theming/colors and put them in place (right now my Waybar and vifm especially just don't look right) (this one is going to require a lot of work, but there are also a lot of people who do this amazingly; plus, I've got some colors to work with already :), I really like the the "slate" vim theme and those trans-nonbinary colors are a great start as well, particularly that purple!)
MOAR TERMINAL (maybe try again with steam-tui, risk discord-tui, and re-examine links/lynx) (plus this really helps with fileviewer in vifm)
Try out nix-flakes (I really need to figure out what these things are, they sound right up my alley!)
Setup backups of my system / get all my configs into nix (the few that aren't already there) (I have some suspicion that nix-flakes might help with this)
Learn more (there's always more to learn!)
Welp, that's about it for now! See ya :3

i want to keep tumblr because i like aesthetics
aesthetic aggregation is important because it allows for intimate relationships to develop outside of life-long domesticated-servile contracts
you transfer
love energy,
actually, when you share your aesthetic, and merge, like that
however
i don't think its possible to make organic relationships the same way it was a decade ago, no, entirely too sanitized
i highly doubt, since the algorithm that i'll ever oganically run into; actually its absurd to even finish that sentence
luckily, i became a sysadmin / programmer, in the interem period, and can actually build the tools this time around
i have an idea for an aesthetic aggregator portal place that combines dump.fm & tumblr with cellular automata, like a living pool you gaze into and everything's a ripple on a wave, man, that's like connected, woah
and i'm schemeing on it, i love lisp, when i go looking everything i want to do is available to me like channeling a spell... somebody already wrote scheme to wasm, that really shouldn't be too hard... still looking for alternate ways to chat :D hmu on xmpp it's exactly like AIM
i've tried node/npm, python, package managers... the best most satisfying one if you're going to go and install a big library, blob thing like that, is probably some flavor of emacs... for me, this is a personal preference, the fact that you 'can' do anything that rust/python/go/js can do in LISP... is enough for me, because, it is elegant, it is more pleasant to look at and easier to read, idk. loving my time with it recently and have been knocking it out of the park most days recently... the past 7 years i've been working on a top secret project, which will have a working alpha demo of the basic features by the end of next week :D
the best os rn is a freeBSD jail with guixSD GNU/linux-libre there's also hyperbola/BSD in the works you want to try to phase out the linux kernel because of all the google/microsoft shenanigans creeping in, you don't need unix/linux any more you can do all your daily driver stuff on an embedded, low power risc soc that costs under a hundo you need less overhead for embedded systems, there's microkernels like genome, and platforms like zephyr, its ok to move away idk one thing i learned its good to take a step back and look at the scope of what you're trying to achieve, try to strip away all the unneccessary parts... a mhz is 1,000,000 calculations a microsecond or whatever, when you sit down and write a piece of code how many calculations exactly do you need to do to do your business, honestly.
^these are the 3 am ramblings of a minimalist
i'm trying to find peers here on my site that's connected to the internet that's why i'm sending messages to it about my interests, pardon me, sir please send $1 to this address

Beyond The Board minimalist puzzle adventure game has a Demo coming for both Linux and Windows PC. Thanks to the creativity and skill of Fragile Shapes Studio, gameplay comes to life in an unforgettable way. Which you can try now on Steam.
You’re deep in a tense chess match. Every move counts. Then — CRACK — a bolt of lightning rips through the sky, shattering your perfect strategy and sending the entire stage spiraling into a surreal, alternate dimension. You're no longer playing chess. You're inside it.
Welcome to Beyond The Board, the upcoming minimalist puzzle adventure from Fragile Shapes Studio. This isn't your typical mind game.
Unveiled during the OTK Games Expo, Beyond The Board is like if Monument Valley had a mysterious love child with Limbo. Now all dressed up in checkered patterns and strange, dreamy landscapes. And best of all? The demo is out, and Linux support is on the way.
Yep, we're definitely going to drop a Demo for Linux, since we're developing BTB using Unity.
Fragile Shapes Studio is definitely excited to bring native support, but there's no ETA just yet. It’s on the roadmap — but with just two devs handling both production and marketing, they’re a bit swamped for now. Hang tight — it’s coming.
You play as a lone Rook — separated from your party and also flung into a collapsing realm after a freak lightning strike breaks the rules and reality itself. The mission? Track down the enemy King. The catch? Nothing works the way you'd expect.
A Title That Breaks All the Rules—Literally
Forget everything you know about chess. Here, Beyond The Board bends. The tiles shift under your feet. Enemies don’t play fair, and puzzles twist your mind until it feels like you’re dreaming. One moment you're hopping across familiar patterns, the next you're falling through a gap in the stage into a new dimension. Every move matters, but not in the way you're used to.
This isn't just about thinking ahead—it's also about feeling your way forward through quiet ruins, eerie fog, and kingdoms that feel like they’re holding their breath. There are no tutorials, no long-winded explanations. So just you, your instincts, and a hauntingly beautiful world that speaks through music, motion, and silence.

And it respects your intelligence while letting you figure things out on your own, without hand-holding.
What You’ll Find in Beyond The Board:
A surreal world of ruins and wonder – Each new area feels like a dream falling apart.
Puzzle mechanics that flip the rules – Switches, strange tiles, and logic-bending paths force you to rethink everything.
Enemies with personalities – Every piece has its own rule set. So learn them. Outsmart them.
ecrets everywhere – Return to past levels with new tools and ideas. You’ll see them in a whole new light.
Try It Now—And Wishlist It
The free demo is live on Steam, playable via Proton. Which is also the perfect way to dip your toes into this beautifully broken world. Explore, get lost, share what you find — and for native Linux support, keep your eye out. Support is on the horizon.
So go ahead: step Beyond The Board. The minimalist puzzle adventure game doesn’t just ask you to solve puzzles—it also dares you to question the stage itself.
