Okay so there's now NixOS on here. Maybe I should have installed it with a graphical environment rather than with the minimal installer. I spent way too much time figuring out how to get networkmanager to connect to WiFi. I also made this stupid mistake of forgetting my keybind for opening anything on xmonad, so I had to go back into the tty to figure that out. Well now I've got an OS and a window manager!

Step 0. Get fed up with Windows 10/11 and all the forced-fed stuff, like ads and LLM, in the Start menu.
Step 1. Install Ubuntu Linux
Step 2. Learn Docker & cool stuff and wonder why I used an abomination called WSL. This is the real deal.
Step 3. Get into VIM. Watch some cool videos, and ditch the last spyware called VSCode.
Step 4: Learn about NixOS and switch to use because all cool kids like it. This is the end of the distro hopping.
Step 5: Minding my business and YouTube recommends FreeBSD. Oh noo. Here we go again…😅

my travel laptop is currently running NixOS and I can really see the appeal but it is reminding me starkly of the experience of learning Linux for the first time.
You just go down rabbithole after rabbit hole of "how do I configure X" "well in order to configure X your system needs to be set up to handle Y" "What's Y?" "Y is set up based on your system's Z"
Fortunately I'm immune to tedious bullshit and also this does somewhat resemble Salt, the automation software I've been using at work.

If debian is the linux distro for lesbians, and arch is the linux distro for trans girls, then the distro for trans lesbians is...
OpenSUSE? Fedora? NixOS?
#is there a distro that kind of combines parts of debian and arch?#or can somehow use both apt and pacman?#debian#arch linux#linux#OpenSUSE#fedora linux#nixos

What shell/shell theme do you use? It looks amazing.
thanks :3 i use the zsh shell on kitty with the hack nerd font.
the colour scheme is my own creation. i do not know if it is too practical, but it works for me :)
here is the link to my nixos config where you can find the colour scheme if you really want to use it
one version is under packages/zsh.nix but that is probably a bit different from my kitty config which i can't find in these nixos configs anymore. it should be in there ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
i will post the kitty colour scheme later, but i can't access it right now. currently busy copying my boot drive onto a larger one :3

I know you're actually @systemdeez but the bit is so good i shall follow you again
tysm but i'm actually not @systemdeez , but someone else
also nano is the only editor that should ever touch /etc/nixos/configuration.nix, installing emacs on nixos requires --impure because you are installing a filthy editor

i wrote a little (ok, maybe it’s like a half-hour read) article about NixOS, how excited i was to try it out, and how unfortunately disappointed i was when i actually installed it. mostly, it seems like an absolute nightmare to get a developer environment set up there, and anything that’s not officially supported is basically impossible. maybe that’s hyperbole, idk, but i wanna hear what other people’s experiences with NixOS are and if I’m insane or not!
you can read my article on my blog behind this link :)
