Juneteenth and the Legacy of Memory: A Reflection from Canada
Reflecting on Freedom, Resilience, and the Work of Henry Louis Gates Jr.
The power of history, media, and public knowledge helps shape our futures, and Juneteenth is a reminder of that across borders. I find myself reflecting each year on its significance, not just in the U.S., but here in Canada too, especially during these trying times. With a hope that we never revisit the injustices of eras like Jim Crow, we must stay grounded in memory. As we mark Juneteenth from across the border, I want to honour the powerful legacy of Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., whose work continues to shape how we understand the weight of history and freedom.

Echoes of Jim Crow: When Progress Stalls and Segregation Whispers
It’s a chilling reality to witness the subtle, yet unmistakable, resurgence of policies that evoke the dark era of Jim Crow. Never did I imagine we’d find ourselves teetering on the edge of re-establishing a system of segregation.
As a Black Canadian, observing the United States, in particular, inch backward into a past that should remain buried is deeply unsettling. It forces me to confront difficult conversations with my family, conversations about the fragility of progress and the persistent specter of racial inequality. Click here to read more.

Why I Still Roll With Retro: My Love for Atari, Sega, and Nintendo
My journey into retro gaming began with the Atari 7800, a console I saved up for as a kid, until I had enough cash to call it my own. Not totally true, but lets talk about the Nintendo Entertainment System another time. Glitchy graphics, limited colours, and games that sometimes felt more like abstract art than actual game-play. But those imperfections were part of the charm. Atari wasn’t just a…

What is DeepSeek and the $6 Million Side Project - Causing a Stir in the AI Industry
DeepSeek AI and the $6 Million Side Project That’s Causing a Stir in the Industry
So lets talk about DeepSeek. I couldn’t believe it was developed on just $6 million. In a world where AI projects routinely burn through hundreds of millions, here was this “side project” that was outperforming tech giants like ChatGPT and Gemini. A David and Goliath story? For movie fun it kind of reminds for of this scene from Tron Legacy, when Flynn dumped the ENCOM OS online for…

Match Day is a soccer video game developed by Jon Ritman and Chris Clarke, originally published by Ocean Software in 1984 for the ZX Spectrum. Widely regarded as one of the earliest and most influential attempts at creating a soccer simulation on home computers, it remains a fond memory for retro gaming enthusiasts.
The game featured a side-on perspective with visuals that mimicked a pseudo-3D or isometric style, a notable innovation for its time. Players controlled large, cartoonish footballers capable of dribbling, tackling, and executing actions like throw-ins and corners. Despite its simplicity, the ball physics introduced a level of realism that set a benchmark for future soccer games.
Match Day included eight teams with quirky names like Ritman Rovers and Ocean United, though players could customize team names and colors. The straightforward controls, optimized for keyboards or joysticks, made the game accessible to a wide audience while still offering a challenge.
While the game hasn’t aged particularly well, its impact on the sports gaming genre is undeniable. With its combination of accessible gameplay, innovative visuals, and customizable features, Match Day laid the groundwork for the football simulation games that followed, securing its legacy in video game history.

As a Canadian of Black descent, I never learned about the Tuskegee Airmen in school, but their story is a remarkable chapter in Black history that deserves recognition and remembrance. These brave African American pilots and support personnel played a crucial role in World War II, breaking racial barriers and proving their exceptional skills in the face of discrimination. The Tuskegee Airmen were…

Still Stuck in Markham Traffic
Still Stuck in Markham Traffic
I thought we already talked about this, but here we are—still watching paint dry on Highway 7 during rush hour (both morning and evening)! Remember when we thought the pandemic would magically fix traffic because everyone would work from home? Yeah, that aged well. The stretch between Warden and McCowan has somehow gotten even worse, turning what should be a simple drive into an impromptu…

When Science Centre Lights Go Dark: A Community’s Loss Beyond the Building
Fighting for the Heart of a Community In recent months, I’ve found myself writing two heartfelt letters to our provincial government representatives. The first was a plea to reconsider their decision about relocating the Science Centre. The second came after receiving their response—a politely worded but firm confirmation that the relocation plans would proceed as announced. As someone who grew…

Refurbished Tech Wins: Why My Samsung S21 Setup Aligns with Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
When it came time for a phone upgrade, I explored all the options. From the Samsung A25 and OnePlus Nord to even considering a low-end Google Pixel, I wanted something that balanced cost and quality. Despite my initial hesitation, I even looked at Motorola devices. In the end, I chose a refurbished Samsung S21 5G. It simply made sense—it does exactly what I need without the excess. To complement…
