Framley Parsonage by Anthony Trollope.
The fourth Barsetshire novel continues to explore the themes of class, politics, and the ties that bind. The pace is leisurely, but the details of Barsetshire society gradually accrue to form a rich and credible world, and the last third of novel stirs with event and emotion. We see the weighty influence of the aristocracy in the person of Lady Lufton (who strongly reminds me of Elizabeth Gaskell’s Lady Ludlow) on her son, Lord Ludovic Lufton and her son’s longtime friend, Mark Robarts, the Vicar of Framley. Her patronage is generous, but it comes with expectations. We are confronted with an unscrupulous character, and once again Mrs. Proudie’s behavior fails to comport with her position as the Bishop’s wife and Christian. In contrast we are shown the nobility of lovers, the selfless devotion of wives and mothers, Miss Dunstable who is known as much for her shrewdness and integrity as for her wealth, and we see the steadfastness of friends. In the balance Anthony Trollope inspires us by showing us Barsetshire’s fidelity and humanity. It’s a lovely book, one of my favorites in the series thus far.

Lady Constance facts because I'm a big supporter of her being weird and/or horny:
-Per Pigs Have Wings, she smokes. This was in an era where smoking was relatively rare for women and some cigarette companies wouldn't even advertise to women for fear of backlash
-In Leave It To Psmith, Psmith assumes she's going to ask him to explain the obscure line, "Across the pale parabola of joy". However, Miss Peavey is the one who asks about that line, leading to the conclusion that Connie actually understood it perfectly.
-All of her official love interests are significantly older than her, but I think it's kind of implied from the way she talks about "McTodd's" "good forehead" (?) that she's definitely taking careful stock of the better-looking young literary guests, and engaging in girl talk with Miss Peavey about their assets.
-She has incredibly violent urges, and has to restrain herself from throwing things or hitting her brothers in basically every book.
-She believes Galahad has had sex, a heavy charge in her eyes.
-She reveres her ancestors, but the only living member of the family of whom she expresses any positive opinion is Lord Bosham's wife, Cecily, who only joined the clan through marriage. She boosts Ronnie a little bit when she's trying to get Millicent to marry him, but then seems to give up. (Her late sister Jane is referred to as "poor Jane", but that's about as far as she goes with any of her siblings)
-She seems to have given up inviting artistic guests after the disaster of Orlo Watkins in "The Go-Getter", but her eclectic choice in Leave It To Psmith was quite shocking considering how buttoned-up the character becomes. Lectures on theosophy, two-hour lectures on vegetarianism, an artist who asked to sunbathe nude in the garden and was immediately granted her permission to do so... Maybe she entered a spiritual depression after the loss of her husband.
-She also has a pet spaniel in Psmith that is demoted to a random spaniel with no mentioned owner in the opening passages of Summer Lightning. The animal is never spoken of again.
-In Service With a Smile, it's made pretty clear that Joe Keeble is her only late husband, so we must conclude that she did not, in fact, marry until her mid-40s. This is absolutely bizarre for an Earl's daughter in that time period, especially one who spends so much time obsessing over who in her family is marrying whom. Wodehouse probably wasn't intending to stay with the characters for so long when he wrote Leave It To Psmith, but it leaves us with the question of what the hell was Connie doing and thinking while every one of her sisters was getting married at a "normal" age? We know she had at least two love affairs or flirtations: the Duke of Dunstable goes from being a vague thing that petered out to a full-on broken engagement by A Pelican At Blandings, where she also mentions her father's secretary. We learn here that she was in her 20s and Dunstable was nearly 40, and I'm going to suggest that maybe it just took her ~15 years to recover from not becoming a Duchess.
-No mention is made of her having formal education until A Pelican At Blandings, the last completed Blandings novel. We then suddenly learn that she attended Roedean, where she was on the debating team. Considering that she's in her mid-40s circa 1921, this means she was one of the first English women to really have the option of formal schooling--in fact, I did the math, and Roedean in her day would have been a tiny affair run by two women and having about 20 students. It wasn't even called Roedean yet! I assume this was a slip-up by Wodehouse, since Roedean is his standard school for clever and intimidating girls, but Connie is at least 15 years older than the other ones he mentions.

Navigating Wedding Dress Alterations: Essential Tips and Insights
Unless you choose a custom-made gown, alterations will be required for your wedding dress. Why are we so certain about this? Because your wedding gown is extremely important—it is the clothes you will be remembered in, immortalized in numerous images long after the event. As a result, on this critical day, you deserve a dress that fits perfectly to your figure. The most reliable method is to make changes that are suited to your exact dimensions.
While it's possible that your off-the-rack dress already fits perfectly, this is very unusual. My goal is to provide you with critical knowledge. So why are wedding dress tailors near me so expensive? What factors should you keep in mind when selecting your wedding gown?
Why You'll Need Groom Suit Alteration Aylesbury
Off-the-rack wedding gowns are available in standardized sizes, which means that while your fundamental body measurements are taken into account, the proportions of the dress are often based on predefined circumferences or the next size up. Essentially, you have acquired a good starting place.
For example, your bust measurement may have a broad back and smaller cups, but the dress measurement for the same circumference may include a smaller back and a bigger bust. In such cases, you'll need the assistance of a custom-made groom suit Dunstable who can expertly resolve the incongruity and ensure a faultless fit.
Typical Wedding Dress Alteration Requests Include:
Shortening: Most wedding dresses need to be shortened, particularly at the front, if not all around.
Bodice Adjustment: Taking in the bodice to achieve a better fit.
Bead Replacement: Replacing missing beads to restore the dress's embellishments.
Bustle Addition: Adding a bustle to allow for easier movement during the reception by securing the train at a higher point on the dress.
Shoulder Adjustment: Take up the dress at the shoulders for an improved fit.
Sleeve Addition: Adding sleeves for a different look or additional coverage.
Neckline Modification: Building up low necklines to enhance modesty.
Zip-to-Lace Conversion: Converting a zip closure to a lace-up back for aesthetic or functional reasons.
Schedule Your Wedding Dress Alterations
Wedding dress alterations in Dunstable should be made close to your wedding day, usually within the last two weeks. This period accommodates for potential weight fluctuations and assures a flawless fit on your wedding day. However, brides who have not prepared ahead of time may experience last-minute stress.
For many custom-made groom suits, Hitchin provides in-house alterations for an extra charge. If this option is available, they may book your modification sessions when you pay your deposit for the garment. However, if such services are not available, we strongly advise you to contact A&Z Tailor and Alterations as soon as your wedding date is set and you have purchased your dress.
Bridal seamstresses are highly sought after, and their calendars fill up quickly. Securing wedding dress alterations at St Albans months in advance not only gives you peace of mind but also allows them to manage their workload ahead of the busy season's demand.
Paying a booking fee guarantees that you have set out time in their schedule for your custom-made groom suit, helping them to manage their task more efficiently.

SCHOOLING : BEAUXBATONS, academy of magic.
HOUSE, IF APPLICABLE : éclatant. the house of brilliance, the members of this house have found excellence in their magical pursuits and boast graduates such as perenelle flamel and marie curie. exceptionally creative, forward thinking, and more ambitious than most knew how to focus it before their arrival to the school, éclatant’s students are at the forefront of innovation. whether reinventing spells and maximizing their use or inventing new ones ( something about modern problems needing modern solutions ). still, éclatant’s house has laid out one thing very well: some of the most creative minds don’t choose the most clear cut paths. independence, so says the plaque beneath perenelle’s statue on beauxbaton’s grounds, is watered by creativity and confidence.
N. E. W. T. S EQUIVALENT : charms · o, transfiguration · o, herbology · o, potions · o.
NOTE : beauxbatons academy of magic offers a different set of examinations which ultimately qualify their students at sixth year and allow seventh year students to specialize in their fields of success after their sixth year. this allows beauxbatons students to typically enter their workforce earlier as some students intern with the french ministry or find masters to learn under for their own future masteries in. with this being the case, miss lestrange’s grades come from her sixth year of studies. her tutelage under richard macintosh began when she first visited ireland and sought mister macintosh out. he only accepted her as a student, so she says, because she impressed him with an undoubtedly strong cheering charm that kept him under her spell for almost two hours. he came to his own faculties while they were in the midst of tea. miss lestrange has carefully stressed this was in no way an imperius curse.
OCCUPATION : MASTER of charms. mistress lestrange is currently crafting spells as part of her research for her own charms textbook. mistress lestrange has also been experimenting with combining transfiguration and charms spells into a single action.
MINISTRY FIELD, IF APPLICABLE : ––
REGISTERED WAND : willow wood, veela hair core, 12 ¾ inches, and surprisingly springy. willow wands are typically considered to be feminine, favoring charms work, non verbal spells, and healing magic. willow wands also favor a wielder who bears some kind of insecurity and equally have an incredible potential. veela cores are notoriously temperamental but they, too, have their own favor towards charms, and the master of charms is as graceful in her magical expertise as she is in everything else that she does.
AMORTENIA : there’s a fondness that comes with the question, a moment of remembrance for a first love and disastrous potions class all in one go. elisabeth said that the cherries from across the room were the first thing she smelled, because of the cherry trees on the lestrange property growing up. it’s the one smell that was truly familiar, like she was going home. the second thing she mentioned was something deeper, that she couldn’t quite place her finger on at the time ( now it’s something she recognizes faintly as someone’s cologne, though she has been in the presence of too many men attempting to win her over to identify specifically which one -- though it did have notes of sandalwood ? or perhaps bergamot ? ) . and then, without a doubt, there was the sweet notes of toffee and butterscotch that have become part of her christmas traditions.
BOGGART : her own gravestone, marking her as the last of her family’s line . her father’s spirit rises up and begins cursing his daughter for failing them, for failing him because she wouldn’t live up to the one thing he asked of her. upon the casting of a successful counter charm shows her surrounded by multiple children, with a partner beaming at her with pride. one might be careful to note that even though the charm is successful, it might lead to a deeper fear that even with all these children and this legacy secured, she is not truly happy.
PATRONUS : corporeal, a raven . mystics tend to find comfort in ravens, but they are insightful creatures who are generally known for their cleverness and understanding . it’s a toss up in the muggle world if ravens are a good omen or agent of sin, but in the magical world it is far more indicative of a person who seeks ( or has attained ) freedom. it is worth noting that the raven is the symbol of the house of lestrange.
KNOWN AFFILIATIONS : BURKE, fidelia. LESTRANGE, taliesin. MACINTOSH, richard. MCKINNON, malachai. WEASLEY, septimus.
CURRENT MAILING ADDRESS : 3 faber road, her mother’s former summer home and built by the faber family in 1667 after the great fire.
LAST SEEN LOCATION : arriving by portkey in the ministry accommodations for international travel from france, after attending a meeting for the académie française des sorciers.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION : member of the académie française des sorciers as their secondary supervising body on charms , first belgian born witch to win the dunstable dueling competition as set forth by the british wizard dueling association, her title as master of charms was awarded after studying with sir richard macintosh who is only known to have produced ten such masters before her ( most thought he was dead prior elisabeth’s mastery ).
SECURITY STATUS : not a known threat, under observation. there is no need for observation, gerald, stop editing miss lestrange’s file.

Martha Dunstable x Doctor Thorne | for @khaleesa
ᴍy ᴅᴇᴀʀ ᴍɪss ᴅᴜɴsᴛᴀʙʟᴇ,
— ...We have known each other now somewhat intimately, though indeed not very long, and I have sometimes fancied that you were almost as well pleased to be with me as I have been to be with you. If I have been wrong in this, tell me so simply, and I will endeavour to let our friendship run on as though this letter had not been written. But if I have been right, and if it be possible that you can think that a union between us will make us both happier than we are single, I will plight you my word and troth with good faith, and will do what an old man may do to make the burden of the world lie light upon your shoulders...
...If you do not believe me to be true and honest already, nothing that I can write will make you believe it.
God bless you. I know you will not keep me long in suspense for an answer.
Affectionately your friend,
ᴛʜᴏᴍᴀs ᴛʜᴏʀɴᴇ.
ᴅᴇᴀʀ ᴅᴏᴄᴛᴏʀ ᴛʜᴏʀɴᴇ,
—I do and will trust you in everything; and it shall be as you would have it...
Yours affectionately and very truly, ᴍᴀʀᴛʜᴀ ᴅᴜɴsᴛᴀʙʟᴇ.
“Then I suppose I am bound to have him,” said Miss Dunstable, dropping the letter on to the floor in mock despair.

Wrote the above of today which took me till 1 3/4 - stayed talking some time to Marian after breakfast about my buying the Hampstead property - immaterial to me, so long as it would pay me the interest of the money - no encouragement to come to particulars, so here the matter dropped - thought my father would not like to sell it to me knowing I had the money to borrow - said I was always so unlucky at understanding him, should then say nothing about it - if he could find another purchaser, it was well - thought in my own mind, I might go as far as £400 - but then 1 1/2 year’s rent for fine would be £42, and the expense of purchase-deeds would be £20 or £30? or less? - Mrs. B- [Barlow] says ‘the comtesse de Mollandé …. is going to be married to the duke de Luxemburg’
.....
From 2 50/60 to 5 50/60 wrote and read over 3 pp. and the ends, and under the seal very small and close to my aunt - telling her all the news (a great deal) I could pick up, and all about giving up building at the Cunnery and how on my father’s account - do not understand - cannot yet make out whether he is really for or against my planting more and therefore cannot determine as yet what to do - the building at Lower brea to be done - none to be done at the Stagg’s head Inn - the paying for the Northgate land the main hinge on which rests my getting off from here - Know not how it will be but hope to be back in Paris before the expiration of October - say, I think, we ought to have another woman servant whether Miss McL- [MacLean] returns with me or not - mention John’s daughter Martha, and Jessy Maclean from Coll - ‘I almost think Martha would do’ …. the sooner my aunt gives her opinion on this, the better - the Hampstead property to be advertised for sale by private contract - valued at £700 would take £600 - mention to Marian I should have no objections to buy it if it would pay the interest of the money - ought to pay nothing for the little garret M. Sèué is to let us have in addition - another servants room always promised, if and when we kept another servant - wheat above the plantation - oats in the Hanging hey - Charles Howarth junior began mowing today - (he was almost frightened with it, so green - but corn should be cut a week or 10 days before ripe)
Wrote the last 14 lines, and dinner at 6 1/4 - sent off my letter to my aunt ‘place neuve de la madeleine, No. 2, Paris,’ by Cordingley at 6 1/2 - went out at 7 20/60 - into harvest field - thinnish field of wheat above the Hanging hey - sauntered about - came in at 8 - sat talking - came to my room at 10 5/60 - Fahrenheit 70 1/2º in the library at 9 1/4 p.m. - very fine day - very hot - damp, heavy, oppressive heat -

Track and Trace find’s Lord Lucan
A Dunstable based Track and Trace operative was surprised when she called a number on her list, and Lord Lucan answered the phone.
This is T&T’S latest success. Recent achievements include finding; Shergar, 20,000 missing nurses and The Ark of the Covenant.
Our real hope is to find The Holy Grail, that would be something. We heard that a man in Newcastle met someone in a ‘spoons, whose brother knows a guy that may be able to help.Sir Lance A'lot
A Government shill claims that the UK’s Track and Trace system is truly world-beating. “The American’s still haven’t found Bigfoot, Elvis or Donald Trump guilty. As for our European partners, we are closer to finding The Count of Monte Cristo than the French, and the Italian’s are never going to find The Godfather. The only downside is the German’s, who with their legendary efficiency claim to have found the missing link. So, yes! things are going well.”
Asked about the Government’s record in locating infected people, the Health Secretary said,
It’s not all about the numbers. This is a very difficult process, I’ve only had 7 months to get testing in place. But look at the things we have found; A left-sided English midfielder, Lord Lucan and the rest of Boris’s children. Focus on the positive!Calamity Hancock, Wealth Secretary
Meanwhile, the government continues.
Hancock. Making a colossal cock-up of something and pretending it was what you meant to do in the first place

Now That’s What I Call Mass, Vol. II (Volume I here)
[Tumblr’s Spotify integration seems to be borked]
1. Vivaldi, ‘Kyrie’ - a strange mix of almost dissonant-sounding vocals and familiar chord progressions
2. Dunstable, ‘Kyrie’ - stripped back to pure Renaissance polyphony
3. Zelenka, ‘Christe Eleison’ (Missa Omnium Sanctorum) - winding, twisty, jazzy, like this composer’s best work
4. ‘Gloria’, Ordinarium Misse - performed by the Coro Madrigale Slovenico: sometimes Gregorian chant can feel somewhat oppressive; other times, like this, it opens out into another sense of time.
5. Mozart, ‘Lacrimosa’ from Requiem in D Minor - Mozart in Eight Sobs
6. Schütz, ‘Nacket bin ich vom Mutterlieb kommen’ (’Naked I come into the world…’) from the Musicalische Exequien. A funeral mass with this epic opening movement constructed of religious quotes that were engraved on a count’s coffin - such a gothic story.
7. Palestrina, ‘Sanctus’ (Missa Aeterna Christi). A filler piece, but it’s Palestrina...
8. Biber, ‘Agnus Dei’ (Missa Salisburgenis). Apparently there is a thing called ‘Colossal Baroque’, of which this is an example. But do also check out his Mystery Sonatas for solo violin.
9. Duruflé, ‘In Paradisum’ from his Requiem, Op. 9. I already used it for this playlist, but it’s just so beautiful.
10. Vedel, ‘Nunc Dimittis’. Led to it by this Soviet-era LP - Orthodox choral music can be so sublime.
