Trailblazing Aeolus mission winding down On 30 April 2023, all nominal operations of Aeolus, the first mission to observe Earth's wind profiles on a global scale, will conclude in preparation for a series of end of life activities. Although a recent upgrade to Aeolus' original laser meant that in its last months it has been performing as well as ever, diminishing fuel combined with increasing solar activity means the mission must come to an end. That ESA's wind mission has made it this far is a great achievement, having outlived its predicted lifetime of three years by over 18 months. But it's not over just yet. Over the past year, scientists and industry specialists have been designing a thorough roadmap to bring the Aeolus mission to a close. After much consideration and careful planning it was decided that the best course of action is to carefully re-enter the satellite back to Earth. The finishing touches to the end-of-life schedule will be made over the coming weeks and a timeline will be announced in due course. In the meantime, Aeolus will provide data as usual up to the end of operations on 30 April 2023. While no new operational data will be gathered after 30 April, the mission's existing data will still be available to users. "My gratitude goes to all our ESA and industry colleagues who have developed and operated this unique mission," said Aeolus Mission Manager, Tommaso Parrinello. "A special thanks goes to the scientific community, whose support has been outstanding and has contributed to one of the most successful missions ever flown by ESA." A trailblazing wind mission Aeolus, ESA's fifth Earth Explorer, was tasked with an extraordinarily challenging and pioneering feat: to measure global winds from space using a laser. Its launch in 2018 was an achievement some thought might not be possible, especially after many years of grit and determination to make its experimental technology work. Plenty of headscratchers and setbacks were encountered along the way. Once in orbit Aeolus met further trials, being forced into switching to its back up laser less than a year after launch. The struggles were worth it, as Europe's wind mission triumphed. Aeolus data are now used by major weather forecasting services worldwide, including the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), Météo-France, the UK Met Office, Germany's Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD), and India's National Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF). Its many successes, including economic benefits valued at over €3.5 billion, mean that an operational follow-on mission called Aeolus-2 will be launched within a decade. Remarkable improvements in weather forecasts Aeolus carries an instrument known as ALADIN, which is Europe's most sophisticated Doppler wind lidar flown in space. A laser fires pulses of ultraviolet light towards Earth's atmosphere, and a receiver detects the light that is scattered back from air molecules, water molecules, and aerosols such as dust. Thanks to subtle changes in the properties of the light that is received, we can measure how quickly these particles travel away from Aeolus—the speed of the wind. Over its four and a half year lifetime, orbiting Earth 16 times a day and covering the entire globe once a week, ALADIN has beamed down over seven billion laser pulses. Supported by the ground segment team, well over 99.5% of the data collected reach users such as weather forecasters within three hours. The impacts have been remarkable. Since ECMWF started assimilating Aeolus data in 2020 the satellite has become one of the highest impact-per-observation instruments in existence. A lot is down to Aeolus' capacity to measure winds where data are scarce. When planes were grounded during the lockdowns imposed due to the COVID pandemic, Aeolus was able to contribute missing data to plug the gap in weather forecasts. Researchers recently concluded that Aeolus data could also help to improve forecasting of hurricanes in regions of the planet where reconnaissance flights are sparse, particularly over the tropics. A universal collaboration The Aeolus mission has been underpinned by a tightly-knit, Europe-wide collaboration of over forty experts that make up the Aeolus Data, Innovation, and Science Cluster (DISC). Years of calibration and validation activities by the DISC, including tens of thousands of kilometers flown in field campaigns from Greenland to Cape Verde, have honed and improved the instrument and the quality of its data. In recent years, an international collaboration known as the Joint Aeolus Tropical Airborne Campaign (JATAC) has expanded the remit of Aeolus, honing in on the use of Aeolus data to measure the role of aerosols in tropical weather systems. Where aerosols are concerned, Aeolus has managed to provide unique insight into volcanic plumes. The satellite was able to track the huge Hunga Tonga eruption of January 2022, and observed a completely new atmospheric phenomenon following the eruption of Raikoke in 2019. Aeolus wind data also improve modeling of plumes as they spread through Earth's atmosphere, which benefits air traffic safety. Other innovative projects have used Aeolus data to understand a range of phenomena from Saharan dust to ocean biochemistry and sea surface winds. The results will inform future Earth Explorer missions such as EarthCARE, a collaborative mission between ESA and JAXA that will carry a similar lidar instrument to measure atmospheric aerosols and clouds. "The Aeolus mission has been a triumph of European innovation, collaboration and technical excellence," says ESA's Director of Earth Observation Programs, Simonetta Cheli. "Aeolus is another example of how ESA's Earth Explorers perform beyond expectations, and a shining light for our Future EO program. Its impacts will live long beyond its lifetime in space, paving the way for future operational missions such as Aeolus-2." It was inspired by a DJ-wifi fanart, and is loosely following the plot of weathering with you by Makoto Shinkai. It's an Alya centric fic, which I'm not used to, but I'm having fun writing it so far !

The gist of it is that it's constantly raining in Paris and Alya decides to take the matter into her own hands and investigate. She meets Marinette, who's currently running a fashion blog, and they end up meeting Nino, who seem closely related to the rain mystery. Adrien is around somewhere too, but I haven't quite decided when Alya would meet him. Nino already knows him because I'm incapable of breaking Adrinino apart and Marinette has had, in true Adrinette fashion, a bad first experience with him, but Nino's working to fix it.

CNN: ‘Murderers’ and ‘criminals’: Meteorologists face unprecedented harassment from conspiracy theorists

“Murderers.” “Criminals.” “We are watching you.”

These are just a handful of the threats and abuse sent to meteorologists at AEMET, Spain’s national weather agency, in recent months. They come via social media, its website, letters, phone calls – even in the form of graffiti sprayed across one of its buildings.

Abuse and harassment“have always happened” against the agency’s scientists, Estrella Gutiérrez-Marco, spokesperson for AEMET, told CNN.

But there has been a rapid rise recently, coinciding with extreme weather in Spain. A severe drought has shrunk water levels to alarming lows, exacerbated by record-breaking April temperatures.

The abuse got so bad that in April, AEMET posted a video on Twitter calling for an end to the harassment, and asking for respect. Even the government intervened. Teresa Ribera, Spain’s minister for the ecological transition, posted on Twitter in support of the agency: “Lying, giving wings to conspiracy and fear, insulting … It is time to say enough.”

The harassment of meteorologists by conspiracy theorists and climate deniers is not a phenomenon confined to Spain.

National weather services, meteorologists and climate communicators in countries from the US to Australia say they’re experiencing an increase in threats and abuse, often around accusations they are overstating, lying about or even controlling the weather.

In Spain’s case, much of the trolling revolves around the rehashing of an old conspiracy theory: so-called “chemtrails.”

Under many of the agency’s Twitter posts, especially those that refer to more extreme weather, users have posted images of blue skies, crisscrossed with wispy, white trails. They falsely claim the trails contain a cocktail of chemicals to artificially manipulate the weather – keeping rain away and causing climate change.

It’s a theory roundly rejected by scientists.

Airplanes do release vapor trails called contrails, short for condensation trails,which form when water vapor condenses into ice crystals around the small particles emitted by jet engines.

But scientists have been clear: There is no evidence “chemtrails” exist.

In April, meteorologist Isabel Moreno wrote a tweet saying “rain skips Spain,” with an image of a band of rain stretching across Europe but missing Spain almost entirely. She was completely unprepared for the response.

“It was one of the hardest experiences in social media in my life,” said Moreno, who appears on the Spanish TV channel RTVE. “I received HUNDREDS of responses to an (apparently) inoffensive tweet,” she told CNN in an email.

Many accused her of covering up weather manipulation.

“Do not take us for idiots,” said one. “They dry us up, and you are the spokesperson for those who do it,” said another. And on, and on.

While there were plenty of supportive messages, too, it was scary, Moreno said. “I have never seen either that amount of responses nor that level of aggression.” It took days for her to be able to go onto Twitter again without feeling anxious or stressed.

This phenomenon may be particularly pronounced in Spain, but it spreads much wider.

In France, meteorologists have been accused of exaggerating the country’s drought and heat.

Météo France, the French national meteorological service, said the agency’s communications are “the object of more and more repeated attacks,” a Météo France spokesman told CNN.

Climate misinformation on social media is particularly widespread, he said. It “seems to be on the rise, both in terms of the number of attacks directed against scientific publications but also the increasingly aggressive tone of the insults.”

In Australia, the Bureau of Meteorology has been bombarded with criticism of its reporting of temperature records, with claims they have been inflated to make climate change seem worse. A spokeswoman for BOM called these claims inaccurate. “The Bureau transparently reports on and provides access to its very large climate data records,” she said.

And in the UK, meteorologists reported unprecedented levels of online harassment during last year’s record-breaking heat wave, which led to the first-ever “red warning” for heat.

“As scientists communicated this information, they were accused of instigating a nanny state hysteria,” Liz Bentley, the chief executive of the Royal Meteorological Society, told CNN.

The Met Office was even accused of changing the color palette of its maps to make them look more dramatic. “We hadn’t, it was just really hot,” Oliver Claydon, a communications officer at the Met Office, told CNN.

US meteorologists and climate communicators have not escaped the barrage of abuse and conspiracies.

“Whenever I posted about global topics, like the yearly temperature report, the comments section would be filled with political jabs and conspiracy theories,” said Elisa Raffa, a broadcast meteorologist with Queen City News, based in Charlotte, North Carolina.

As a woman in the media, she more often receives comments about her appearance than the science she’s communicating, she told CNN.

Jennifer Francis, a senior scientist at Woodwell Climate Research Center, said she’s seen a ramp up of abuse lately.

“I receive almost daily verbal declarations of my ignorance and climate alarmism,” she told CNN.

Some disinformation experts draw a straight line from the conspiracies that flourished during the Covid pandemic – when experts faced a slew of abuse – to the uptick in climate conspiracies.

People need “trending” topics on which to hang these theories, said Alexandre López-Borrull, a lecturer in the Information and Communication Sciences Department at Universitat Oberta de Catalunya in Spain.

As Covid-19 fades from the headlines, climate change has become a strong rallying point. There’s been a big increase in “insults directed at all organizations related to the weather,” he told CNN.

“It’s a logical evolution of the broader trend around pushback on institutions, and the erosion of trust,” said Jennie King, the head of Climate Research and Policy at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, a think tank focused on disinformation and extremism.

These kinds of conspiracies are usually grounded in the idea that a set of institutions is “using the pretext of climate change, or the pretext of solving public policy issues, to enact some insidious agenda,” she told CNN.

And the weather is an easy way in. Many aspects of climate science can feel very technical or abstract, but the weather is something people interact with frequently, said King.

“It’s a much more immediate way to bring a wider audience into that skepticism … planting seeds of doubt against the climate agenda writ large,” she said.

The role meteorologists have in explaining how climate change affects the weather, especially extreme weather, is a particular flashpoint.

Extreme weather can be alarming, especially when there are consequences and sacrifices, such as Spain’s water restrictions.

Conspiracy theories feed on this fear by offering a simple, enticing explanation, said López-Borrull. It’s easier to believe climate change is fake, or a manipulation by powerful people, than get your head around the complex problem and what it means for society.

“Change is hard and scary,” Francis said

It’s difficult to combat conspiracy theories when they bubble up. Some experts say they offer simple charts and rebuttals when they can, but try to ignore those who come in bad faith.

Doug McNeall, a climate scientist and statistician at the Met Office Hadley Centre, a UK research center, said that, as a scientist, he welcomes being challenged. “If people come with better evidence, and you change your mind, that’s good,” he told CNN.

But that’s not been his recent experience. “These people were not coming with better evidence,” he said. “They were coming to stop us talking about climate science.” He now relies much more on the block button.

Moreno echoed this. “I find it very difficult to change the minds of people that really have strong beliefs in these conspiracies,” she said. It’s easier to prevent the ideas from taking hold in people in the first place by tackling the myths and explaining how the atmosphere works, she added.

This kind of communication can really help, said King. Some of the best initiatives are “when media outlets or scientific institutions really try to demystify the process of how they produce public interest data,” she said.

King worries about the impact of these conspiracies on climate politics. “If we want to implement any policies, ambitious or not, around the environmental agenda, and the acute crisis of climate change, it does now seem that this is going to rear its head,” she said.

López-Borrull hopes meteorologists and climate communicators will persevere and not be pushed away from online spaces.

“The answer is not disappearing or closing social media profiles … they have to remain on social media because they are really useful,” López-Borrull said.

But as the climate crisis causes more extreme weather, harassment could increase even further.

And it takes a toll, said Raffa.

“I think it’s easy for people to forget I’m human, some of those comments can be hurtful. I’m just trying to do my job.”

Bonjour et bienvenue from a cloudy Bar-sur-Aube. The temperature is currently 3c and I am hoping for clearer skies and an increase in the temperature…….. where would we be without hope!

It has been rather cold this week, thank goodness I wasn’t gallivanting. Of course, I still had my daily walks to do and to be honest I didn’t venture far, usually to the bar for a hot drink, some company and then back home as quickly as possible. Goodness knows why, but I have also been snoozing in the chair on an afternoon 🙄.

We have left February behind and March has stormed into our lives. My poem this week is by William Wordsworth, here is the excerpt from “Lines Written in Early Spring”

“Through primrose tufts, in that green bower,

The periwinkle trailed its wreaths;

And ’tis my faith that every flower

Enjoys the air it breathes.”

My primroses have been flowering for a few weeks and the periwinkles are indeed wreathing across the ground.

My “little lady” comes to clean once a week and we enjoy our chats in “franglais”. She loves Inspector Barnaby or as it is known in the UK, Midsomer Murders. She tells me she prefers John Nettles to Neil Dudgeon (I hope it’s not because Dudgeon is a Yorkshire lad!) and gives me lots of info about Nettles (which I may have known in a previous life).

The knitting group met and my new found friend, Claudine, was there this time. It was an enjoyable time and The President of the association (whose wife attends the group) came in about 4.15 to prepare “Le gouter”. Now under the old regime it wasn’t “tidy up time” until 4.30 then we scoffed our gateau and drank our juice and left. I must admit it was a much more relaxed atmosphere starting earlier and during our chat I found out more about the President and his wife, than I have in the previous five years.

The new plumber emailed to ask if he could start the work this coming week, of course, I said yes, if only to get the new siphon fitted and get rid of the stench! He is coming at 8am in the morning 😳, my goodness I will need three or more alarms going off to get me out of bed, washed and dressed before then! I have also been notified by the Town Hall that there will be cuts to water on Monday for work in the system, now I was notified a few weeks ago about this but it didn’t affect me at all, so fingers crossed the same is true now.

Anie is away, staying in a gîte near to Toulouse. It was her nephews wedding yesterday, I hope it was a lovely day for them all.

I am going to the cinema this evening, to see “Emmett Till”, I read the blurb about it and thought it would make a change. I do so enjoy having the cinema in town, it’s so easy to go into alone (a lot of people do) all I hope is I don’t fall asleep (as I usually do 😂).

I finished knitting another two infants hats and two pairs of bootees, I put them together with the other three hats and pair of bootees and took them to the collection point for Turkish and Syrian earthquake victims. The men in the collection point were so appreciative of my small donation. I had missed the first consignment which is currently being delivered but there were other items which had been donated so it looks as if another delivery will take place.

Someone told me that snow is forecast from Tuesday onwards, I am keeping my fingers crossed that that is not the case. Météo is showing rain, now that I can cope with.

My fixed rate for gas ends on 31 March and looking at the new options for fixing 😳, I will wait to see if April brings any lower figures. I also remember an email arriving which said how much it would cost for three months April to July, I need to check the amount for that so that it is a fair comparison. Golly I hate all of this checking, fixing etc why can’t gas be charged to every household at one fair price?

I am preparing a lot of “stuff” to be taken to the decheterie. I won’t get there tomorrow as apart from the plumber arriving, I have an appointment with the dietician. I am hoping against hope that I am very close to my target weight.

I was a little late rising this morning, and surprised myself with what I achieved in an hour. I have meat cooking in the slow-cooker so will have my Sunday Lunch around 2pm, then when I return from the cinema I can make a sandwich and eat my days supply of fruit.

I watched an interesting programme last evening on plastic sandals. Now I remember having plastic sandals as a young girl, they were perfect on sand, you could go in the sea in them, just wonderful. One of the reasons they fell out of favour was because they were classed as “poor peoples footwear” this was true not only in “wealthier European countries” but also in African and Asian countries where they had been particularly popular for dealing with monsoon rains. Although this programme was in French I found it very informative. Plastic sandals are still made, some branded “Medusa” sandals, produced here in France.

Oh yes, spotted in the newspaper this week, the Venise-Simplon-Orient-Express made a stop at Troyes station and rail enthusiasts were quick to admire this bygone luxury. I wish I had known it was going to make an appearance, I could have been one of those admirers.

Now, I really must have a coffee and see to another few jobs.
