the subtle changes in jess’ hair and clothes over the course of the show is so fascinating imo

OH? an excuse to discuss the fashion sense of my meowest meow?

fr tho it’s absolutely fascinating and it parallels his development. i’ve talked about it a bit before and @stellaluna33 has done a lot of analysis on the choices made by the costuming department, but like. the fact that he started out looking like this:

with the dark clothes and the shorter hair and just an edgier, older appearance overall, only to transition to this:

aka his best era imo. i love his hair here and the clothes that he wears—everything is either blue (the color of rory’s eyes) or at least very earthy (which i think is meant to reflect that he’s grounding for her, esp since all of their conversations are super significant and tend to have some kind of impact on rory). then we get to this:

on the left side we have like, his softest look ever. he’s wearing a sweater and he just looks v boyish and young and kinda… happy? for once? bc pretty much everything in his life is good (or so he thinks). then it all goes to shit, which is reflected in the right image—the dark clothes again, the leather jacket which is meant to signify him adopting the “bad boy” look bc that’s how everyone seems to perceive him and he’s given up trying to convince them that they’re wrong. he lost his fight and he’s tired, so he’s embracing it. THEN we have his sad wet cat era:

his hair is all grown out, he’s meant to look skinny and kind of gaunt, and he’s still wearing the leather jacket but under that it is a white shirt—meaning the bad boy thing is just a facade and the goodness (since the color white is often associated with good) is what’s underneath. lastly we have his indie beatnik scuffed puppy look:

my second fav tbh. he’s settled into himself here and he’s wearing clothes that are a lot less rough in appearance (and as I pointed out in a previous analysis, he’s wearing a plaid under the denim jacket which could mean he’s metaphorically keeping luke close, kinda like he’s always being hugged by him idk idk). he’s got the business-like blazer on the right, but the graphic tee underneath, which is meant to show that he’s not trying to be someone else or put on airs. he’s still jess, he doesn’t do suits and ties, but he does have important events that he needs to look semi-together for and he’s willing to put in that effort. also if we look at the hair, on the left it’s kinda up which could reflect that he’s hopeful, and on the right it’s flatter which might signify the defeat he feels (if we’re really putting him under the microscope, that is). anyway i love him he is my little blorbo.

you know that whole conversation at the bar was jess just going “don’t say anything mean” to himself. he could have obliterated logan anytime throughout that whole conversation. i say that’s my baby and i’m proud🥺

heya!! I just discovered your blog and love it, especially since I’m currently watching GG for the first time personally :)

Currently about to start s4 but also kinda avoiding it bc I have a pretty good idea of what happens in one particular storyline but anyways-

My question is, what’s one of your favorite parallels in the show?

One of mine has to be the tux parallel between Dean and Jess but I’m curious on yours!

alright i have thought long and hard for months (literally) and i have finally come to the conclusion: windows.

in my opinion, windows are used as a tool in the show, and they are never unintentionally placed. jess gazing at rory at the end of ayitl, luke and lorelai catching waving through the diner windows post-breakup, watching rory hesitate over and over talking to jess from inside the diner while jess does the same. all of these instances, and more, show a scene where the characters could talk, but there is something bigger preventing them from doing so. it materializes itself in the form of glass. you can see the other person, you could almost reach out and touch them, but there's something invisible in the way.

i've ranted about this before but god. it could just be me always falling in love with the delinquent awkward handsome characters with a rad growth arc, but jess is really one of a kind isn't he??

ahhhh hi!!! favourite character is probably lorelai or jess 🥰 i watched the show over the course of like a year so i can’t really remember what episodes were where but i think i remember enjoying season 2 & 3 the most!! i liked the episode where rory and lorelai go on the road trip and visit harvard, LOVED the episode of paris and rory going on spring break to florida, and also loved the whole of lanes wedding it was so sweet!!

I KNOW. I fell completely and immediately in love with it. It's just so good and pure and it's a really compelling story, fun to watch, simple and beautiful. I remember I recommended it to some friends and they didn't like it haha, how can you watch that movie and not love it?! And the point of view changes are everything! 💜🥰

I THINK ABOUT THIS ALL THE TIME!!! it’s why i try to rectify it with like every lit fic i write 😤 you just know they were fucking adorable when they were dating but we never got to see the cute shit. them bickering while watching movies? rory initially trying to convince jess to go to prom w her and him secretly being down the second she brings it up but drawing out his ‘yes’ to tease her? them sitting on opposite ends of the couch and reading in silence (and sharing a blanket) while lorelai watches in horror like they’re an alien species? them sitting on the hood of jess’s car eating fast food while he plays alt music on the radio and rolls the windows down so they can hear? rory first telling jess she’s going to yale and being insecure about her decision still but he reassures her that she’s doing the right thing? jess calling her after he gets off work and filling her in on all the shitty things customers did and said to him that day? him bringing her back those dorky smiley face stickers wal-mart used to give out and her putting one right on the center of his forehead? them cuddling? playing w each other’s hands/fingers while talking w/out realizing it? jess being a total simp and lowkey waiting on rory hand and foot when they’re hanging out? GOD i love them so much it makes my chest ache

okay lorelai & max for sure i’m so curious

ack okay, I don't like them together. they rushed into things and took things wayyy too quickly and imo Max really pressured Lorelai into a relationship. she wasn't comfortable dating a teacher at Chilton and then Max asked her over and over until she finally said yes, and then when Lorelai tries to end things he kisses her in his classroom during the school day. And Lorelai I think really wanted to be ready for marriage and a husband and cared about Max, but she wasn't actually ready. They never would have worked in the long run and Max being so pushy just felt skeevy.

Send me a ship and I'll give you my (brutally) honest opinion on it

Not really a question but I just wanted to hop on here and gush about your oneshot: Gave Me The Blues.

I’ve already re-read it twice (and most likely will again) but both times, it was just so incredible! The colors matched to each of her lovers and metaphors were *chef’s kiss* as well as just the whole idea in general of her finding & losing her blue was wonderful.

Like quotes such as: “She can find her blue in the purple, and she can say “this is me, Rory Gilmore”.” / “Blue are the lines in the notebook, begging to be written in, and blue is the girl who vows she will” / “Rory Gilmore is blue through and through, but in her eyes, love is purple.”

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. <3333

BEEN WATCHING GG WITH MY GRANDMA RECENTLY AND SHE BROUGHT UP SUCH AN INTERESTING POINT ABT DEAN AND RORY

so basically we were watching and she told me abt how much she doesn’t like Dean and this is where it got so interesting, she said: he’s so protective and controlling in such a way, it’s like he’s treating her more as a sibling. Long term, just picture if they got married, he’s angry right now, he’ll only get worse.

let's go grandma! I've never heard of the sibling thing but honestly those two have about as much chemistry as two sack of potatoes, so. anyways, I definetly agree with the marriage thing. I've actually read a few fics where they DID get married and that's exactly how it played out. the way he is protective and controlling is almost like he sees Rory as an extension of himself, rather than her own being. and of course he acknowledges their differences, but you can't exactly say he likes them or accepts them as a part of their relationship (ex: making a big deal of being "dragged" to the book fair in s2). I think a long term relationship just would never have worked out, and we see that in the beginning of season 5 when they try again.
