The Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson is my favourite fantasy book series! These are the main character Vin and the very important bi-character Elend at the beginning of the series, and again around the end of book 2. Their haircolours are head-canons of mine (canon is black for vin and dark brown for Elend)

A weird pattern I noticed with the Cosmere was how the hero and villain groups keep mirroring each other, and not in the sense it usually means.

Spoilers for Elantris, Mistborn, and Warbreaker.

In Elantris, one of the hero groups is basically Prince Raoden’s buddies. They’re (mostly) young, intellectual nobles who discuss the future of the kingdom. At the climax, they’re instrumental to defending and reforming the kingdom.

In Mistborn, Elend’s book club looks just like them. They’re intellectual nobles who discuss political theory; specifically, why the Final Empire isn’t perfect, what can be done about it, and how to get the Lord Ruler to concede power. They even discuss and swap banned books.

But they’re useless. Other than Elend, they all fall apart, retreat, or even hinder the heroes. 

The people who really change things in Mistborn are the criminals. Kelsier’s thieving crew, the skaa resistance, the criminal underground. They know everyone, who does what and how to break the system. 

In Warbreaker, Vivenna needs the help of mercenaries, crime bosses, and revolutionaries to save her sister. These crooks are familiar, and even if Vivenna disdains them, the audience sympathizes. 

But they’re the villains. They see Vivenna as a mark, another noble to deceive, rather than an ally. And destabilizing the city, inciting the people to rebellion, just makes thing worse for everyone.

sometimes I remember that elend venture “not-like-other-girls”ed his way into marriage and ultimate political and magical power. that bitch was reading in the corner cuz he didn’t like the parties he was forced to go to. then he picked up objectively the hottest girl IN the world and then became emperor AND got the best magic powers. Say what you wanna say about Kelsier but that man knew how to love and he loved with a raw fucking passion.

For years he was led to believe that Mare had mercilessly betrayed him before she died and yet he still insanely loved and missed her — something that he stated as a simple fact and not as a guilty confession.

Kelsier and Mare had 0 page-time together, but they still managed to snatch my fucking heart and push my expectations through the roof precisely because of how Kelsier talked about her! Is there anyone who does it like him? Hell nah!
