Mitch/ Lamar + "Your pillow smells like [smell of your choice]"
OH done and done! (More under cut)
“Your pillow smells like….cigarettes?” Lamar looks up from the empty spot on the bed next to him. He had just awoke from a deep sleep, having been tired from the plane ride to their… secret place.
So tired that he didn't even say hello to his… partner before he passed out.
It wasn't like Lamar was unfamiliar with the smell. It didn't overpower him or anything it was just surprising to smell that from.. anything to do with Mitch Mcdeere.
What was more surprising was seeing Mitch, standing on the balcony, cigarette in hand. He was still looking out at the view, so he must not have heard him.
He had never seen Mitch smoke before, and he knows it shouldn't be alluring… and yet…
Something about the man standing out, watching the morning light over the ocean while smoke exudes from his stick and his mouth.
God. It turned him on far more than he thought it would.
But then… it hits him. Mitch had never smoked before. This was a new habit. That probably meant he was stressed. That's why HE used to smoke after all.
Indeed it had been a few months since he had laid eyes on Mitch's body without layers of clothes over it. And now it was clear to him that Mitchell Mcdeere was losing weight, at an alarming rate.
His heart stops. Smoking and possibly not eating was a dangerous combo.
Lamar had lost a lot of things to the firm… his sense of pride, a lot of privacy, his sense of safety…. Honestly, he was just waiting for the day for it to take his wife and kids…
But he couldn't let them take Mitch.
It was only at this moment Lamar moved to the edge of the bed, calling out loud enough for Mitch to hear him.
“Mitchell. Put that out and join me… please.”
Mitch listened to the command putting out the cigarette in the ashtray on the small table outside before coming inside.
He moves close enough for Lamar to put his hands on his waist. And Mitch moves with no resistance. He is easy to move. It appears as if he is a fog, he isn’t making a single sound.
Today… Lamar doesn't like it. He sighs.
He is in a daze, more so than usual. Maybe it is hunger? Fuck. No, they are doing this on an empty stomach today.
Lamar let go of Mitch and rubbed his temple, groaning as he did so, “Grab my wallet, woulda? Go get us some breakfast and…”
He was going to suggest something different but… maybe Mitch needs something more. A treat.
“And then I can eat you afterward. Deal?”
Mitch's eyes widened removing any sort of trance he was under. He nodded enthusiastically, a very weak smile on his face. He still wasn't speaking, but this was something.
He quickly grabbed a pair of his jeans and slipped on a shirt before grabbing Lamar's wallet from his pants pocket.
Mitch was about to leave before Lamar added, “And don't spend any money on cigarettes, okay?”
There was a pause before Mitch nodded.
When Lamar heard the door close, Lamar's head hit the pillow again. Truth be told he liked the smell of cigarettes…
Lamar just liked the smell of his partner, much more.

What Could Have Been (4/?)
Series Premise: When Ethan breaks his promise, Cassie is forced to accept they’re not inevitable after all.
Book: Open Heart Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Cassie Valentine) Rating/Category: Teen. Angst Words: 1,195
Series Masterlist
Chapter 4: New Normal. Old Habits. Time to accept the reset and explore new possibilities.
Tumblr media
Whenever Cassie Valentine had imagined her life as a doctor, it invariably involved her medical hero, Ethan Ramsey. Back then, she had only known his words and thoughts on diagnostics.
She had come to Edenbrook to learn from him and hopefully impress him enough that he’d agree to mentor her. Falling in love with him hadn’t been part of her plan.
Their relationship hadn’t been the plan, and yet they were inevitable. Or so she had believed once upon a time.
Nothing lasts forever, she reminded herself as she got dressed for work. She would always carry a version of him in her heart, one she didn’t have but couldn’t lose.
Despite the awkwardness of the last few weeks, their relationship had begun to… normalize. They were professionals, after all, and loved the work. When it came to the Diagnostics Team, Cassie was already learning so much.
Their latest case involving Lamar Stevenson was the perfect example. It would have never occurred to her to conduct a home visit to diagnose an illness. But the systematic way Ethan walked her through the process opened her eyes.
For a while, she forgot that they were no longer together as a couple. Once they were away from the hospital, the easy banter returned, and so did the light teasing she could never resist with him. Ethan could be too serious, but never with her.
“If I lived here, I would lose my mind,” she said dramatically, gazing at the placid bay.
The beach house didn’t even have the melodrama of angry waves crashing against the rocks. What exactly did people do with so much quiet?
“What about this would make you go insane?” Ethan asked in surprise, clearly not expecting her answer.
“Are you kidding?” She shook her head and spread her arms to encompass the scene. “It’s way too boring! I need to live in the middle of the action.”
“One would think you already get plenty of action,” Ethan grinned, his expression more relaxed than she’d seen in a while.
When Cassie raised one eyebrow, his face flushed, and he stumbled over his words. “I meant your casework. Get your mind out of the gutter.”
“Too late,” she almost quipped but suddenly remembered who they were, or weren’t rather, and swallowed her words.
When she almost fell off the chair while reaching for the photo album from the top of the armoire, she never doubted Ethan would catch her. But she hadn’t been prepared for the scent of his cologne and that feeling of rightness as he held her in his arms.
They stared at each other, blue eyes clashing with green, both reluctant to let go. Following instinct, she leaned closer, and he did the same, their foreheads almost touching.
This is how it could’ve been, Cassie thought wistfully. But it wasn’t; she was only torturing herself and him by letting the moment linger.
That was yesterday. Today, it was back to being Dr. Valentine and Dr. Ramsey.
Cassie exited the subway station with Sienna, half-listening to her friend talk about her intern Mitch. Her mind was jumbled with her dream of Ethan last night and Lamar’s worsening condition.
As they neared the hospital’s entrance, Sienna nudged her shoulder forcefully. Cassie glanced at her friend and realized someone was standing before them, blocking their way.
Nate Hanson looked just as good as she remembered. They had gone on one date six months ago but had flirted plenty over text. Conflicting schedules kept getting in the way of their second date.
And then things between her and Ethan changed after Miami. There wasn’t room for anyone else in her heart after that.
“Nate? What are you doing here?” she asked, wondering if she missed a message from Max that his friend was coming to Boston.
“Board meeting,” he said, smiling in a sincere way that was part of his charm. “My company concluded the research project with the hospital, so I’m presenting final recommendations to the board.”
Nate looked askance at Sienna, who was watching him with curiosity. Cassie quickly made the introductions.
“It’s good to see you, Cassie,” Nate said, the appreciative look in his hazel eyes boosting her self-confidence. “Is it too much to hope you’re still single?”
“She’s definitely single,” Sienna grinned cheekily.
Nate laughed, and Cassie threw her friend a disgruntled look. Unrepentant, Sienna waved it away and slid a lascivious sideways look at Nate.
His phone pinged, and he checked the screen. “Shoot. I have to head upstairs.”
He moved closer, and Cassie tilted her head back to gaze into his eyes.
“Can I please take you to dinner tonight? Our previous efforts at scheduling didn’t work, so let’s be spontaneous,” he added when Cassie looked doubtful.
“I get off at six,” Cassie relented.
“Great! I’ll pick you up at seven from your apartment. If that works?” Nate said.
“Seven is perfect,” Sienna piped in.
He smiled and winked conspiratorially at Sienna, making Cassie huff in exasperation.
“Don’t you want to know where I live?” Cassie called out as he started to walk away.
“I’m a hotshot CEO. I’ll find out,” Nate shot back cockily over his shoulder.
Suddenly, he turned around as if pulled by a string and slowly walked back toward her, looking abashed.
“Sorry. I was trying to be cool,” Nate said, nervously running one hand through his hair. “I have no idea where you live and, short of asking your brother, no way of finding out in a way that would be considered legal.”
“Give me your phone,” Cassie ordered, rolling her eyes but secretly amused too.
Later that day, Cassie sipped the coffee Alan Ramsey had bought her as thanks and absently reflected on her upcoming date.
But her mind kept drifting to Ethan and his vulnerability, barely there before his mask descended when his mother was mentioned. So much of his life was a closed book and always would be, she thought morosely.
Meeting his father, knowing Ethan had mentioned her to him, had been the highlight of her afternoon. And for another brief moment, back at the coffee shop, they’d forgotten about the reset.
She hated seeing Ethan upset and reached across the table to press her hand to his. He didn’t resist. Instead, he gently stroked hers with his thumb. The gesture was so loving and familiar tears pricked her eyes.
“I’m here for you,” she whispered, feeling his anger and pain.
Cassie wanted to wrap her arms around him, for him to be hers again so that she could comfort him in a way not allowed between colleagues. But the spell broke with his next words.
“I mean it, Cassie. This means nothing,” he said definitively. “I don’t even know why my father came all the way here to tell me.”
It was sobering to realize the man she loved could be so heartless. If he was willing to easily cut his mother off and call her a stranger, what chance did Cassie have that he’d eventually let her back into his life?
Despite his gentle touch, Ethan could be harsh and unforgiving. And she would do well to remember that.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
May 2, 2021
Heather Cox Richardson
On Friday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and 36 Republicans sent a letter to Education Secretary Miguel Cardona accusing him of trying to advance a “politicized and divisive agenda” in the teaching of American history. This is a full embrace of the latest Republican attempt to turn teaching history into a culture war.
On April 19, the Department of Education called for public comments on two priorities for the American History and Civics Education programs. Those programs work to improve the “quality of American history, civics, and government education by educating students about the history and principles of the Constitution of the United States, including the Bill of Rights; and… the quality of the teaching of American history, civics, and government in elementary schools and secondary schools, including the teaching of traditional American history.”
The department is proposing two priorities to reach low-income students and underserved populations. The Republicans object to the one that encourages “projects that incorporate racially, ethnically, culturally, and linguistically diverse perspectives into teaching and learning.”
History teaching that reflects our diverse history and the way our diversity supports democracy can help to improve racial equality in society, the document states. It calls out the 1619 Project of the New York Times, as well as the resources of the Smithsonian’s new National Museum of African American History, to note how our understanding of diversity is changing. It notes that schools across the country are teaching “anti-racist practices,” which it follows scholar Ibram X. Kendi by identifying as “any idea that suggests the racial groups are equals in all their apparent differences—that there is nothing right or wrong with any racial group.”
The Education Department invited comments on these priorities. The department does not have much at all to do with local school curricula.
McConnell’s letter in response to this call for comments is disingenuous, implying connections between the teaching of a diverse past, the sorry state of history education, and the fact that “American pride has plummeted to its lowest level in 20 years.” There is, of course, no apparent connection between them.
He complains that Cardona’s “proposal”—it’s a call for comments—would “distort bipartisan legislation that was led by former Senators Lamar Alexander, Ted Kennedy, and Robert Byrd.” That legislation was indeed landmark for the teaching of American history… but its funding was cut in 2012.
What McConnell’s letter is really designed to do is to throw a bone to Trump Republicans. On Thursday, Trump called for Senate Republicans to replace McConnell with a Trump loyalist, and embracing their conviction that our history is being hijacked by radicals is cheap and easy.
The prime object of Republican anger is the 1619 Project, called out in McConnell’s letter by name. The project launched in the New York Times Magazine in August 2019 to coincide with the 400th anniversary of the first landing of 20 to 30 enslaved Africans at the English colony of Virginia. Led by New York Times reporter Nikole Hannah-Jones, the project placed race and Black Americans “at the very center of the story we tell ourselves about who we are as a country.”
The 1619 Project argued that the landing of the Black slaves marked “the country’s very origin” since it “inaugurated a barbaric system of chattel slavery that would last for the next 250 years.” From slavery “and the anti-black racism it required,” the editors claimed, grew “nearly everything that has truly made America exceptional: its economic might, its industrial power, its electoral system, its diet and popular music, the inequities of its public health and education, its astonishing penchant for violence, its income inequality, the example it sets for the world as a land of freedom and equality, its slang, its legal system and the endemic racial fears and hatreds that continue to plague it to this day.”
Their goal, they said, was “to reframe American history,” replacing 1776 with 1619 as the year of the nation’s birth.
The most explosive claim the project made was that one of the key reasons that the American colonists broke away from Britain was that they wanted to protect slavery. Scholars immediately pushed back. Northwestern University’s Dr. Leslie M. Harris, a scholar of colonial African American history, wrote: “Although slavery was certainly an issue in the American Revolution, the protection of slavery was not one of the main reasons the 13 Colonies went to war.” The project tempered its language over that issue but stood by its larger argument.
Trump Republicans conflated this project with so-called “Critical Race Theory,” a related scholarly concept that argues that racism is not simply the actions of a few bad actors, but rather is baked into our legal system, as well as the other institutions that make up our society. This is not a new concept, and it is not limited to Black Americans: historian Angie Debo’s And Still the Waters Run: The Betrayal of the Five Civilized Tribes launched this argument in 1940 when it showed how Oklahoma’s legislators had written discrimination against Indigenous people into the law. But the idea that white people have an automatic leg up in our country has taken on modern political teeth as Trump Republicans argue that Black and Brown people, among others, are at the bottom of society not because of discriminatory systems but because they are inferior.
The former president railed against recent historical work emphasizing race as “a series of polemics grounded in poor scholarship” that has “vilified our Founders and our founding.” Calling them “one-sided and divisive,” he opposed their view of “America as an irredeemably and systemically racist country.” He claimed, without evidence, that “students are now taught in school to hate their own country, and to believe that the men and women who built it were not heroes, but rather villains.” He said that “this radicalized view of American history” threatens to “fray and ultimately erase the bonds that knit our country and culture together.”
On November 2, 2020, just before the election, former president Trump established a hand-picked commission inside the Department of Education to promote “patriotic education” in the nation’s schools, national parks, and museums.
The commission released its report, written not by historians but by right-wing activists and politicians, on Martin Luther King Day, just two days before Trump left office. “The 1776 Report” highlighted the nation’s founding documents from the Revolutionary Era, especially the Declaration of Independence. It said that the principles written in the declaration “show how the American people have ever pursued freedom and justice.” It said “our history is… one of self-sacrifice, courage, and nobility.” No other nation, it said, had worked harder or done more to bring to life “the universal truths of equality, liberty, justice, and government by consent.”
Then–Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted that multiculturalism [is]... not who America is.” It “distort[s] our glorious founding and what this country is all about.” Hannah-Jones retorted: "When you say that multiculturalism is 'not who America is' and 'distorts our glorious founding' you unwittingly confirm the argument of the 1619 Project: That though we were ... a multiracial nation from our founding, our founders set forth a government of white rule. Cool."
On his first day in office, President Joe Biden dissolved the 1776 Commission and took its report off the official government website.
But the fight goes on. The Pulitzer Center, which supports journalism but is not associated with Columbia University’s Pulitzer Prizes, produced a school curriculum based on the 1619 Project; Republican legislators in five states—Arkansas, Iowa, Mississippi, Missouri, and South Dakota—filed virtually identical bills to cut funding to any school or college that used the material. Other Republican-led states have proposed funding “patriotic education.” In Mississippi, Governor Tate Reeves called for a $3 million fund to promote teaching that “educates the next generation in the incredible accomplishments of the American Way” to counter “far-left socialist teachings that emphasize America’s shortcomings over the exceptional achievements of this country.” South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem proposed a curriculum that explains “why the U.S. is the most special nation in the history of the world.”

The New Mexico Bowl (officially known since 2011 as the Gildan New Mexico Bowl for sponsorship reasons) is an NCAA-sanctioned post-season college football bowl game that has been played annually since 2006 at Dreamstyle Stadium (known before May 2017 as University Stadium) on the campus of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Since its founding, the bowl has been typically scheduled before Christmas as one of the first of the season. In 2011, clothing manufacturer Gildan became the first title sponsor for the game.
Beginning with the 2014 game, the New Mexico Bowl features a team from the Mountain West Conference and a team from Conference USA, provided both conferences have enough bowl eligible teams. If one or both conferences does not, the bowl selection committee chooses an at-large team from another conference. In August 2013, it was announced that Conference USA had signed an agreement to send a regional team to participate in the game for six seasons beginning in 2014 replacing the Pac-12 Conference. From 2006 to 2010, a team from the Mountain West played a team from the Western Athletic Conference.
ESPN, whose ESPN Regional Television division (also known as ESPN Plus) supervises the bowl activities as one of the 11 bowl games they run, is the television home for the game.[2]The game is the only annually nationally televised sporting event in the state of New Mexico. The 2006 contest was the first bowl game played in New Mexico, seeing the San Jose State Spartans defeat the New Mexico Lobos 20–12. The 2012 game was the highest-scoring and closest New Mexico Bowl of all-time and ended with two Arizona touchdowns in the final 42 seconds of play.
The New Mexico Bowl trophy is a 20-inch piece of Zia Pueblo pottery, painted with Pueblo symbols, the New Mexico Bowl logo, football players, and the logos of the competing teams. The Zia symbol, a Zia Pueblo symbol that is used in the state flag, is incorporated into the bowl game logo. The most valuable player trophies are crafted from traditional leather shields.[3]
The New Mexico Bowl stays active in the offseason among the nation and the local community. The bowl co-sponsors the Presbyterian Ear Institutes' Run To Break The Silence, a 5K, 10K and 20K fun run at Sandia Resort and Casino. They also team with NCAA Football to put on a free clinic for area youth coached by both New Mexico and New Mexico State coaches.[4]

AP writers select Kansas City defensive back Tyrann Mathieu as first team All-Pro, multiple Chiefs make second team
NEW YORK — Despite not being named to the Pro Bowl roster, Kansas City Chiefs defensive back Tyrann Mathieu was named to his second Associated Press All-Pro team on Friday. Mathieu made first team for defensive backs, and second team for safety.
Mathieu was previously an All-Pro during the 2015 season with the Arizona Cardinals. Signed as free agent in the offseason, he’s led a defensive resurgence in Kansas City, picking off four passes, getting two sacks and posting 75 combined tackles, 63 of them solo.
The Chiefs placed two more players on the second-team offensive roster: Tight end Travis Kelce and right tackle Mitchell Schwartz.
Kelce posted his fourth-straight 1,000+ receiving yard season, the first time a tight end has done that in NFL history. In addition to catching five touchdown passes, he earned his first career rushing touchdown during the Chiefs 23-16 win against New England.
Schwartz is one of the most consistent tackles playing in the NFL. He’s played since 2012, and missed the first snap of his career against Tennessee earlier this season. He still played 99% of offensive snaps in 2019, and was only called for four holding penalties.
Mecole Hardman  was named to the second-team special teams as a kick returner. The Pro Bowl rookie placed third in kick return yards with 704 and his touchdown return against the Chargers in Week 17 tied him for the league lead with 1. Only six other players returned a kickoff for a touchdown, Hardman’s 104-yard scamper was the longest.
Additionally, Chris Jones, Frank Clark and Harrison Butker all received votes from writers at their respective positions.
